Took too long on the Calc1 stuff, and breezed thru Taylor series. Dammit!
terrible class. doesnt give enough time to do the tests.
He's a very excitable and silly guy... though perhaps one of the more normal math professors. I think if I would have taken the class seriously it would have been easy enough.
AMAZING! he learns everyone's name in an over 100 person lecture. he is extremely high energy and very helpful. take this class!!!!
Very clear and helpful! Also, very quirky, great personality. I would take any class he taught!!
spent forever on the reimann sum, and expected us to just *know* the taylor and maclauren series. had an A until the final - got a series rule backwards on one question and got a C!!! prepare to learn on your own.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Speaks and explains clearly, writes practically everything he says on the boards, does many examples, and answers emails. HW is given before each exam, but not collected. Very useful for tests. Highly recommended.
do the homework, attend class and you'll do well. explains very clearly, homework is pretty much the same as tests..very helpful and nice...very enthusiastic in class..fun teacher..take him!!
Very good professor... two best math professors at BU = Rorlich and Bianco. I like this class so much I just may have to take 294.
Best prof I had at BU - lectures are very clear, homework is very doable, and he is very welcoming during office hours. Great prof!
Very easy professor. Seems very nervous during his lectures, and he isn't always very clear. Nice guy though.
very great professor!
Great professor! His speech is not always smooth, but his way of writing information on the board is second to none. Gives you hw assignments (not collected) and practice tests. If you do them all, then you should be able to get good grades on the tests.
Rohrlich is awesome. He's a bona-fide crazy genius man. He'll shake your hand and instantly know your name for the rest of the semester, even if you never talk to him. He teaches right off his head, and is a maniac on the chalkboard. Very helpful!
probably the smartest man i've ever seen...Not only that he is the BEST teacher i've heard had...nuff said...take his class!!doesn't even matter the subject he just gives such good notes and is so helpful
This guy is just awesome. He is incredibly clear in lecture and office hours and his tests are generally quite reasonable (they're based on the homeworks). I would take any of his classes.
He is very fair, and lectures so well. He is kind and lucid, and you learn so much from him. I'm glad I took his class.
He's the best calc teacher I've had at BU. I learned a lot from this man. The tests are based on the homework, so if you go over the homework carefully you should be able to do well on the exams! Take his class!
What can you say about Professor Rohrlich that legend doesn't already say? He made Multivariable Calculus a breeze with a method of careful guidance. If you can't learn calculus under Rohrlich, then you can't learn calculus at all.
this guy is just a genius, although a little eccentric. the homeworks can be challenging, so get used to being an office hours regular. the midterm and final were based on the homework so study the homeworks. one bad thing, the final is 50% of your final grade so ace it or die.
Rohrlich is a GREAT professor. His lectures are clear and he covers every topic. Homeworks sometimes have a tricky problem thrown in. He makes sure everyone who goes to his office comes out with their question answered.
terrible lecturer, explains stuff so many times that u cant help but stop paying attention and end up missing once he actually scrables to cover the importatnt material in the last 5 mins. doesnt go by the book and the material is pretty easy so u have to show up to lecture and take asinine quizzes.
Prof Rohrlich is a delight. He is energetic, clear, and helpful whenever you have an issue. Tests are fair and challenging as are homework assignments. Only calc class I did well in at BU. Be prepared to work hard, but you will not be overwhelmed. Really nice man, good, interesting class.
Not going to lie, this guy's a baller. The quizes are hw probs with different numbers, the tests are just as easy. He'll explain everything you need to know, going over at least one example before moving on. In this class nothing is unexpected. Enjoy.
Do the homework... you are doing the exams and quizzes... easy class and nice and good professor. BEST CALC 3 PROF
Oh man, this guy is a genius. Keeps course simple. One HW problem a week compared to 30/week by other professors. Lectures are remarkable. I learned more Calc I and II in Multivar than I did before. Makes MA225 so easy. Very much an easy A class if you do his work and pay attention. Go to office hours, he's so cool! Trust me, taking him = happiness
Rohrlich is a fantastic teacher. He knew everyone by name. His tests were written based on the homework/quiz questions, and he is fair on all graded material (simple math mistakes cost NO points). He is probably the best artist to ever draw a double integral. He throws no curve balls. I wish he taught all math courses
Very precise grader, quizes and HW were a cake-walk but I just could not memorize the HW to do well on tests. It's time consuming, but lectures are very clear with great notes and office hours are so helpful. I just wish he was a little more flexable with the tests..
Professor Rohrlich is one of the best Math professors at BU. His notes are all you need to do well and I enjoyed his lectures.
Rohrlich was great. A very nice professor. Lecture consisted primarily of going over examples to reinforce concepts. This made it very easy to absorb the material. He doesn't test you on Calc I or Calc II. All integration can be done in your head. Would've been an easy A if I hadn't had a below average midterm grade. Easy A- for slackers, I guess.
The worst professor by far at bu. Doesn't go by the book whatsoever and he manages to confuse the class while trying to talk down to the students. Impossible to do well in unless you follow word for word every lecture and go to loads of office hours.
Though he stutters, it's only because he is very concerned about being very clear and precise. He won't try to trick you. Quizzes, hw, tests basically just make sure you can do what you've been taught. Discussion was useless, but that's not his fault. Also, the subject was rather boring. Most importantly: very good at erasing the board.
Rohrlich is awesome. He cares a lot about math and about his students understanding it. His HWs are never too much work, yet make you show an understanding of the key concepts you learned in the past week. We had weekly quizzes that are not bad if you study for them. The exams were not bad.
Definitely take him for MA 124, he gives extremely good notes during lecture. Homework is never collected, only a quiz every Friday, for which he copies two problems directly from the homework. During office hours he's happy to do any problem for you. Do the homework, review for quizzes and you'll get an A. Plus, he's very nice and soooo geeky duri
Highly recommend taking his class(es). As long as you do the homework, you're fine. Jittery in class, but still an excellent professor. Works very hard to help students understand his lessons. Office hours extremely helpful. I specifically chose his MA124 course because I enjoyed his MA123. (and I don't even like math that much.)
He is really funny to watch teach because he gets very excited about calculus! He really knows what he's talking about, but is not very good at communicating it to others. He gets side-tracked, and sometimes has a hard time expressing what he is thinking. But he definitely wants his students to do well. And curves grades heavily.
Very nervous teacher, but extremely easy. All of the exam problems are based off of the problems from the homework, which is not mandatory. Has weekly quizzes that are very easy and can help your grade a lot.
He seems earnest and willing enough, but he can be very rigid and uncompromising. It's obvious that he loves calculus, but that love is definitely not conveyed to the class. If you just need someone to show you examples all the time, this is where to be; if not, find another class.
The homework answers are given in discussion section. The quizzes are the homework problems verbatim. The midterms are the homework/quizzes verbatim. In other words, if you attend discussion section religiously, you will get an A. If not, you will get an F. It's as simple as that.
Very good professor, teaches very well, and is funny too. Quiz and exam questions are nearly all directly from the HW and this makes the class very easy, especially relative to how it could be. The final exam had some new questions, though, but they were not hard. Taking this class with Rohrlich is a good idea, overall.
i took his for discrete math. this guy is awesome and he is very good at explaining concepts in class. didn't need to goto his office hours b/c just by going to class the material became clear. this guy's that good.
Rohrlich is awesome. He really cares about his students understanding the material. He goes through examples very thoroughly during class and is really cute and dorky.
Professor Rohrlich is THE BEST math professor I've ever had. He makes me realize that math is fun and easy. His lecture is super clear. He uses funny jokes and sometimes his jokes doesnt even make sense but they make people laugh. I used to hate math and now I'm doing really well in his class and I'm enjoying every second of the class.TAKE HIS CLAS
BEST MATH PROFESSOR EVER! Have to take his class!
He's one of the best math teachers I've ever had. He can be pretty funny during lecture, gives a lot of examples that help with the homework, and is very helpful and accessible outside of class. There's 2 midterms with makeups and weekly quizzes taken straight from the HW. Doesn't curve, but you really shouldn't need it.
Please take his class. He is SUPER AWESOME. Tells Jokes, Crystal clear lectures, quizes and somewhat exams are based on homework which were decent. I agree with the dude that said he made calculus FUN!Best professor I have ever had. Take him and you wont regret it =]x
Prof Rohrlich is the best math prof ever. He cares about his students a lot. He knew my name before I even talked to him! He said he tried to memorize everyone's name in the class! i was so impressed! He is super clear and his quizzes are so easy! Take this class! u will not regret it!
This is an easy class in the beginning but not so much by the end. He is definitely a good teacher but if you skip class at all you might feel completely lost. Quizzes are homework questions EXACTLY (good grade booster). He's kind of goofy but he's a pretty nice guy. Remember just because attendance isn't enforced, GO TO CLASS.
Overall great professor. Had him for Calc 1 (MA123) and he explained most of the subjects very clearly. He got a little rushed at the end of the year but was still a good professor. Tests are of reasonable difficulty if you look at the homework problems and go to class, he explains all the concepts and how to do the problems.
Great start to college calculus. Go to his office hours and he'll love you. Throws a few curveballs on the tests, but if you do the HW problems over and over again, the tests are manageable. A little bit all over the place in lecture but the textbook and the TA cleared up mostly everything. Really rewarding to do well.
Professor definitely assumed students had a background in calc. Lectures were very confusing, but book was helpful. Quizzes were easy (exact homework questions) but tests were very very challenging.
Lectures weren't useful to me as he didn't go over examples in class and tended to mumble over things. I found that just doing the hw (which isn't graded) was the best way to do well. Quizzes are exact homework problems and tests can have manageable curve-balls. The final was difficult though and was the reason my grade dropped from an A to a B.
He makes me want to take all the math classes he teaches. He's so adorable it's almost criminal. You probably want to have a good calculus background, though... I found the final to be absurdly easy. Just own all the homework problems and take initiative if you need help. You don't need to read the textbook.
Very Good at teaching. Awesome professor. Explained all the concepts thoroughly.
I took AP calc, was good at it, but decided I should retake to make sure I understood everything. I went to lecture a few times, he seemed spacy, so I never went back. I only went to weekly discussions to take a quiz (straight from book). Tests are straight from the book (with some numbers changed). Very easy if you know calc.
One of the worst math teachers I have ever had to experience. I took calc in high school but figured i should do it again my first semester at college. Rohrlich has trouble explaining basic concepts, he also had trouble understanding student's questions in class and would end up off topic. Very unwilling to help when approached
Enthusiastic and quirky in the typical math professor way. Explains well most of the time. Tests can have some tricky material though. Collected HW and quizzes. Book used for HW only.
His explanations are all theory with little connection to how actual problems are done. He uses a textbook but uses examples that neither the textbook nor he explains in detail.
Professor Rohrlich is one quirky mothuh. But beyond that, he is a great teacher. My notes are written like a textbook (which were copied verbatim off the board), and he often reviews difficult concepts. On tests he didn't quite ask too difficult of questions but rather wanted us to answer things as well as possible.
So adorable. He reminds me of my grandpa because he stutters when he gets excited about something. Very clear, great teacher. I wish I could take all of his classes!
Great professor. His notes on the board are sometimes all over the place and he writes and speaks like how he thinks. As long as you do the homeworks you will be able to understand everything.
His exams are extremly hard. He has those problems that never look similar to any of the quiz problems or homework questions on the exam. His explanations are kind of confusing because he skip steps when he do problems on the blackboard.
Prof. Rohrlich's lectures are kind of all over the place, as in he often goes from the middle of one problem to explaining some other concepts then jump into another problem. He is a genuinely nice guy, if you go to all his lectures, do all his homework and visit him in office hours you should be fine. Emphasis on SHOULD.
He is a very friendly professor. His tests are very similar to the homework problems while his quizzes are exactly homework problems. As long as you do all the homework (it is not much), you will get an A. And he is there for you. If you have questions, just check if he is in his office and ask him.
Very clear lecturer, and made sure the class understood everything before moving on. Tough grader on his weekly quizzes, but the quizzes were the assigned homework problems for the week, so you already knew the problems that could appear. Very helpful in office hours, which is necessary to make sure you can do the homework perfectly. Great class.
A really great professor, he is very enthusiastic and cares that his students learn the material. Best 15 out of 24 daily quizzes counted for 30% of grade, and tests were straightforward and exactly like the homework. Pay attention in class and go to discussion to get all the answers for the homework, and getting a 100% on 15 quizzes is easy.
Rohrlich is awesome. His lectures are clear and makes sure that the students understand whats going on. If you have any questions, you can make an appointment with him (if you can't make his office hours) and he'll answer everything. He gave quizzes in this class but they were always based off of lectures or homework so easy to do well on them
You can tell how much professor Rohrilich likes maths from his lectures. Homework problems are similar to lecture examples. If you do homework, weekly quiz should be easy. Midterms are not hard if you understand homework and quiz problems. Final is a little harder but he gave extra credits. He is also a kind grader. Great professor!
Awesome guy, I'm fortunate enough to have him as my adviser too. He's incredibly clear and really kind but if you don't put in the work he will fail you. He's super awkward and genuinely loves what he does and it just makes the class so enjoyable. I really can't stress how clearly and perfectly he goes through the proofs. Would take him every year.
He is very good at making hard concepts easy and he tries his best to remember your name. His grading is very clear and he is very friendly. One of the best professors in the department.
He is very nice and tries his best but he is just not clear. He often goes off on long tangents and forget about what he was talking about. Lectures are really boring and you need to do the homework to pass the weekly quizzes in discussion.
Classes don't make sense and exams don't match anything you do on homeworks or class examples... You study and then exams will be nothing like the homework or class problems. Lectures are boring and he goes on tangents...
Honestly he is not a good professor and he makes you work for your grade through sheer memorization which is not a good way of teaching. Avoid imo
There are quizzes at the end of every lecture, but they're helpful to stay on top of the material and a nice grade booster. Material is clear and well taught. Would absolutely take again.
Rohrich is clearly a brilliant mathematician, but a subpar lecturer and teacher. His vocabulary mostly consists of "um", and he has trouble putting together clear thoughts in a sentence. His answers are often vague. He can be very condescending when answering questions, this created an environment in which asking questions was frowned upon. Avoid.
Great mathematician, terrible lecturer.
Very knowledgeable professor but I don't recommend taking his class. I struggled in this course b/c of the irrelevance between lectures and tests so I then got a private tutor which helped. I visited his office to ask what I could do to improve and he answered with "I'm not sure, but all I can recommend is you do more problems". Little to no help.
To be completely objective, this is a professor who knows his stuff. But what I personally didn't like was he didn't understand that students have other classes to take. He was very reluctant to explain concepts that I missed during lecture over office hours. Wouldn't recommend him when you have a tough semester.
Professor Rohrlich is an amazing mathematician, a true genius. But he is awful at lecturing, and even worse, his tests are infinitely more difficult than the problems he does in class. He does examples in class that are easy and make sense, and then the homework and tests are impossible. His office hours don't help in the slightest, either.
Tests are hard. Especially in the third part of the course. Don't get cocky that you did well on the first one.
It's hard to learn everything necessary, but he's happy to help if you have questions. He's also really enthusiastic and values the effort you put in to the class once it comes to final grades. Go to class, take the quizzes, and go to office hours and you'll be okay. The tests were very different from the work done in class and for homework though.
Professor Rohrlich's lecture is really good. He covers the material clearly and thoroughly. You can tell that he cares about the subject and teaching his students. Exams are relatively easy, except for the final. Overall a solid professor and a solid class.
You never really know what you are supposed to be learning with this class. There is no prelecture preparation, and there is no schedule of topics, so you never know what class will be about beforehand. Review materials for exams are non-existent, yet exams tend to test very specific, hard to find cases. I would avoid this class if possible.
Prof. Rohrlich is very kind and humble as a person. His lectures are always clear and straightforward, and his handwriting on the board is fabulous. He interacts with the students a lot and would answer any questions to make sure we understand the materials. He's honestly the reason that keeps me to go to his 8am lectures.
Pretty good lecturer and fairly easy midterms/quizzes if calculus comes easily to you. But if you don't put in the effort to understand the concepts by actively listening in lecture/through the homework, don't expect it to just click. He gets excited about what he teaches and you can tell he cares. Class is light on homework which was a blessing
Showed up to maybe three lectures all semester for two reasons: it was an 8AM and a quick 2 min scan of somebody's lecture notes could tell you exactly what happened in class. No effort, barely any work, easy A. I like that he's passionate about math, but his lectures are pretty boring. I bet he'd be an interesting prof to have in a higher course.
He's a really nice guy! Attendance probably doesn't matter, but 5% grade is up to the lecturer's discretion. Since it was an 8AM, I kept falling dozing in his class. T2 midterms 1 final, all fair. 3 bc as a lecturer, he wasn't too clear so the hw felt really tough at times.
Professor Rohrlich is THE ultimate math professor/king. I loved his lectures, 11/10 would recommend.
Class isn't super structured and lectures are just working through a bunch of example problems on the chalkboard, but Rohrlich makes a point to show *why* things work. He replies to emails super fast, and this man tried so hard to make sure his online students were able to see/hear him. He's a good teacher, but don't expect it to be a fun class.
Half of the class failed the midterm and no curve was given.
Professor Rohrlich is very patient in explaining the concepts in real analysis and always respond to students questions. I could feel his passion and enthusiasm in mathematical education, rescued me from the boredom and meaninglessness of the growingly-hard math courses. He is one of my favorite professors in BU.
Chaotic professor in the ways he lectures; frantic almost. Doesn't really explain concepts well, just writes problems on the chalkboard and expects you to understand the work. The midterms were alright but the final is absolutely brutal. Attendence is not mandatory but if you miss a class you will be confused.
This was my first proof-based math class, and Prof. Rohrlich made it fun and taught it very clearly! This class is a dificult topic in general, but Prof. Rohrlich made it very approachable. Definitely would take this class again.
Class was not really based on exams but more about HW and quizzes. It was interesting to take linear algebra without too much of a pressure of tests. Psets are HARD but rewarding... show up to office hours and you should be fine, he's very helpful!!
So fluent at teaching and communicating the concepts of real analysis. Dude is like 80 years old and still has a sharper and quicker brain than most of the other professors at this school. He shows no signs of slowing down
He is the course coordinator of MA124 this semester, but he structured the class so poorly. The second midterm was scheduled very late (two weeks before the final week) which makes no sense, and it was very difficult, so if you mess it up you are done for. He also made the homework problems very time-consuming. This class took the most of my time.
I wish to express my concerns regarding the grade I received on the final exam, which appears unusually stringent compared to that of my peers given that this professor and I had some discussions outside of the classroom prior. My intention here is not to undermine the professor's authority or integrity, but rather to steer you away from problems.
Professor is passionate but lectures can be disorganized. Exams are challenging, so staying engaged and using resources like unstuckstudy are key. Overall, a tough but worthwhile class if you put in the work.
