Easy class; hw questions are on midterm
everything you need is on the slides from lecture, which he posts online. the midterm is the hw questions. no textbook or additional readings. highly recommend if you need an easy physical science breadth. the lectures aren't super exciting, but you can tell he cares about his students and tries to make it interesting. the professor is super hot!
Professor romps is one of the best professors i met at Cal. He is super caring and accessible outside of class. And he uses a fun and inspiring way to teach boring things like physics and climate change. His tests are really easy and there is homework due online every week. I really recommend anyone who loves science to take his class!
Incredibly smart, pretty funny, and very kind and caring. Loved his class, and was pleasantly surprised by the very light workload.
Professor Romps is super funny, knowledgeable, and truly cares about his students. He used to post the lecture slides online but stopped doing it about halfway through the semester, so attendance is now mandatory. The midterms are multiple choice and are taken straight form the homework, which is due weekly and usually pretty easy.
One of my favorite classes. A topic that could have been very boring turned out to be really exciting and engaging. Romps is amazing. He is very passionate and his lectures are a lot of fun. He has great videos, demonstrations, and power points are great too!
A really fantastic teacher who cares a lot about his subject matter and students. I learned a lot and looked forward to attending every lecture.
Amazing! Amazing! Would definitely take a class with him again!
I love Professor Romps! I am not a huge science lover, but I found this class to be very interesting. I learned a lot and he made the lectures very fun. There was also no discussion sections. At first, he posted the lectures online. However, later, he stopped because no one came to class. The final and midterms are the homework questions.
Super easy A if you've done even middle school physics. Amazing and funny professor, makes lectures fun and interesting.
He's spectacular. You learn everything in lecture, no outside reading required. His framing of climate change is crystal clear and this class should be required for every ucb undergrad.
If you review the homework before the test, you'll be fine.
Ah, do not forget to review the slides. He kinda tricked us on our second midterm. We all thought it was all the homework questions like midterm 1 but we were wrong. There were some there however
the professor trolled us for midterm 2. Slightly different from midterm 1 without warning, so our study method was partially in vain.
He caught us off guard switching the the exam up a bit. Cant even pass no pass class now. Dont think it is fair tbh. Interesting class but I think he getting obsessed with being harder on grades now, but in a shady way
Guys if ya'll letter and science department ya'll can PASS or NO PASS this class! You can petition a LATE P/NP only once at UCB!
It's kind of messed up on how he changed midterm 2 after P/NP deadline. Professor made his students think the second midterm is like the first midterm. We studied clouds, names, years, history, chemistry stuff, and lots of terms/concepts from the hw (total of 200 terms.) This takes time & hard work. Prof gave us a false impression of the class :(
I think it is his prerogative as a professor to put whatever he wants on his midterms. He's a pretty nice guy and his lectures are interesting. However, I do agree with some of the other comments. I THINK A STUDY GUIDE..a brief outline or basic concepts to cover etc would be extremely helpful especially for the final please.
It is his prerogative, definitely. However, it is unreasonable doing what he did. The first assignment/test are always to help students orient themselves for the rest of the tests/tasks. We studied in a fashion based off how the 1st test was like; and then suddenly the style of the test changed without warning. You can't NOT call that bait & switch
Study guide? Like this comment if you want one for the final.
prof switched test format after 1st midterm & p/np deadline w/ no warning & majority of the class did bad on 2nd midterm. this is rude bc if u didn't study off the hw for the 1st midterm, u did bad on it, and then if u studied off the hw for the 2nd after learning ur mistake from 1st, u still did bad. gave false impression of class+no study guide
Guys I think rather than discussing our feelings here on RMP. I think we should let Professor knows how we feel. There are enough students to convince him to curve our midterm or even give us more guidance for our final exam. I think 75% for midterm 2 should def be curved. Especially when the last midterm's average is an A. Thumbs up if yall agree.
not a fan. midterm 2 was a total bait and switch. if we all signed up because our friends told us midterms would be based on the HW and you switch it up after midterm 1 (and leaving many unable to P/NP and effectively be stuck with a subpar grade) you can't pretend that was fine. avoid unless you like basic math/physics and memorizing useless stuff
Class require an iclicker. Do all the homework. Midterm 1 was questions from all the homework. Midterm 2 wasn't and people didn't do well. Final should be interesting.
I have to disagree with many of the negative reviews regarding MT2. 1) He never said it would be like MT1 2) If you knew the content well rather than just memorizing homework answers, you could do well. I got 40/40 on both midterms--just studied the slides. I don't think it's fair to call it bait and switch when it was straight from the lectures
Midterm 2 was a nightmare and totally unfair. It's his prerogative to make the tests hard, but without warning, guidance, or even precedent given the difficulty of midterm 1, it's disappointing, especially given that he's such a good lecturer and seems to care about the content. Very annoying he prized 'being tough' over us learning.
Prof Romps is an incredible professor. I did horribly on my second midterm because I thought I could get away with just memorizing the homework answers, and so did the rest of the class. Thats our fault, not his. He is actually the best teacher I have ever had. I highly recommend him. The midterms shouldn't stop you from taking this class.
Great professor, informative and engaging lectures. Homework is straight from the slides, as are the midterms. Study the slides and you should do fine
He is the most incredible teacher. Turned a non-science lover into a science lover! Romps is hilarious, engaging and overall amazing. Don't read the comments about midterm 2, people are just salty because they didn't put in the effort (my self included). Regardless of my grade, I am so happy I took this class. He is amazing.
Professor Romps is a great professor. He gives very engaging and funny lectures and the midterms are honestly not very difficult as long as you study the slides carefully (doesn't hurt to study the homework as well). I highly recommend taking this class, as it's a very fun class and you really do learn a loteverything makes sense in the end.
I wish all my professors were as organized and clear as Prof. Romps. You know what to expect. His lectures are usually interesting, and he makes you interested in science! Class is easy as long as you attend lecture (iClicker for participation) and focus on understanding. Glad I took the class it was enjoyable and you learn a lot.
Romps had really good lectures and I learned a lot. He wasn't super clear about the content that was going to be on the tests, but it was mostly homework questions. If you just study the homework you'll most likely get an A.
People complain about midterm 2 but honestly, if you studied the homework and even barely paid attention during lectures you should get at least a B + on it. Final was taken straight out of the homework. All multiple choice. HIghly recommend taking this class.
Romps is an amazing lecturer! Not a science person, but I loved this class. Midterm 2 definitely sucked but the final wasn't unreasonable. I wish he communicated with his students about being more rigorous rather than being tough on the 2nd midterm with no warning, but oh well. Just study diligently and you'll be fine!
Best class I took at Berkeley. It was really engaging and if you pay attention in lecture, study your notes well, you'll be fine. Hw and midterms were easy to study for and extremely straightforward. Both are multiple choice and factual, so just memorize the lecture info. Also the TAs were pretty helpful, had accessible OH.
Professor Romps is an example of how good climate communications should look like: His lectures are clear, concise and you can feel his passion for the subject! 10/10 would recommend taking the course, regardless of your Major! Also, I recommend taking advantage of office hours, because he´s really open to talk with all of his students!
Professor Romps is one of the best professors I have had at Berkeley. He is not only inspirational, but he teaches his content very clearly, and the lectures are fascinating. Homework is easy, and so are the tests.
Class is fine but he is extremely disrespectfulif you go to his office hours do not expect to receive help, only expect to receive a condescending tone and judgment when you don't understand something. Class is stupid easy but don't expect anything more than an average breadth.
Based on past reviews, I did not expect the Professor to be so unhelpful, but he basically refused to answer my questions when I went to office hours. He quickly got frustrated with me when I didn't understand something, and even the GSIs said they were confused about what the lecture I was mentioning was talking about.
honestly the pettiest professor I've ever had. very passionate about the topic but most of the content taught in the course seemed a bit unnecessary and irrelevant. multiple choice quizzes, 2 midterms, a final, and iclicker questions is what your grade is based on. just show up to class and study
Polarizing professor. Good at teaching and the course is relatively easy. But be prepared memorize lots of petty facts. The lecture slides are the syllabus and every small fact could be a question. Slightly condescending in office hours and is VERY impersonal. All exams were mainlyHW including midterm2 for Fall2019. Memorizing all HW gets you an A.
Bad professor
David does his best on making a pretty simple and dry subject more interesting and engaging. He throws in some cute dad jokes too. Iclicker questions every class but 4/5 for answering the question and 5/5 for getting it right. DO NOT try and have someone else use your iclicker for you. Midterm and final questions straight from HW.
Didn't really teach us anything
Took this class because the reviews for romps were good. Beware -- everyone in the dept knows he's gone a bit off the rails lately and doesn't really care about his classes as much as he does his own ego. I skated by fine, but a lot of my friends struggled due to extremely poor instruction. The subject matter is cool but the prof made it suck
Prof Romps is one of my fav professors he is so sweet and super funny! His slides are very funny. I honestly took his class to fulfill a breadth req. but it turns out I learned so much and now want to pursue an education relating to the enviro. There is 2 midterms and hw due every fri. and a final. I 100% recommend this class!
If you do the work, this class is very easy. Multiple choice tests that are almost if not identical to the weekly homework questions. Cat gifs on the lecture slides. Engaging class overall. I never went to office hours so I cannot comment on his behavior there. Based on lecture, he is great and puts lots of effort into making the content enjoyable.
Love this man. Class was interesting and engaging. Make sure to go to lectures take notes. He really couldn't make this class any easier. Literally all the tests were based off of lecture and his lecture slides.
Professor Romps has amazing lectures and he's super fun! He breaks things down into a very simple and understandable level. His lectures were funny and very informative. One of my favorite classes I've ever taken! Homework is due every Friday and is pretty much straight from the lecture. Exam questions are almost identical to the homework.
Homework due every Friday, 2 midterms, and final exam. Homework isn't hard because you can use your notes and there's no time limit. (MC) tests were questions either pulled directly from the homework or changed a little bit. Content is a bit difficult sometimes and it gets hard to remember everything because there is a lot of content in the class.
good lecturer, and makes the material very digestible. He made it clear from the beginning that this would be a very easy class if you just pay attention, and it was. Got an A+ just by watching his lectures and studying the HW for the exams. Highly recommend: easy class and easy A. don't listen to the ones who say its hard, it's high school stuff.
Homework problems were taken directly from lectures, and were assigned once a week (with a week to complete). Could definitely tell he was passionate about the topic! Lectures were all asynchronous, so students could watch at their leisure. Midterms and Final were all homework questions. Loved this course and loved being in Romps' class!
Really passionate about the class, midterms & final questions directly pulled from the homework questions, which were based on lecture content. He doesn't round grades though. A friend of mine was less than 0.1% away from an A- and he didn't round it.
Really passionate about the class. Midterms and final questions directly pulled from homework questions, which were based on lecture content. He won't round grades though. A friend was less than 0.1% away from an A-, and he didn't round it.
Highly recommend this class (at least over zoom)! Last time I learned physics was in the 8th grade. Romps made learning about climate change physics super accessible and broke down even the most basic of concepts. If STEM is hard for you take this! Some concepts can still be hard tho but he's helpful in OH. Not very accommodations with DSP though.
I enjoyed every single one of his lectures Prof managed to make them all entertaining. There is homework due at the end of each week about the lectures. There are 2 midterms and both are made up of homework questions so I recommend studying those before the midterm.
All lectures were prerecorded and we had a weekly quiz along with a midterm and final. Lectures were super concise, easy to follow, and were really inspirational especially towards the end of the semester. All quiz/test answers came straight from lectures and were available on quizlet (although he did have them taken down right before the final)
loved this class!
I enjoyed EPS 7 with Prof. Romps. It was asynchronous & his lectures were the perfect combo of length and substance. HW questions were directly used for exams, & the material in general really woke me up about the climate crisis. He's super nice... but I ended with an 89.43; wouldn't round up & didn't respond to emails about doing extra work.
great professor but i missed two of the weekly quizzes and that brought me down to a B+ (got an A on both of the midterms and finals).
Enjoyed taking EPS 7 for my physical science breadth. Tests were fairly easy and straightforward. Lectures were interesting and easy to understand :)
Class was way too easy
DSP STUDENTS DON'T TAKE!!! I told him my disability accommodations and he said he needed someone from the DSP office to reach out to him before he can give me assignment extensions. He also wanted an explanation for every time I wanted to use my accommodations. He wanted DETAILS even though being a DSP student is already enough to verify my needs.
Great class to fill physical breadth req. Obviously asynchronous makes it harder to really engage with the content but I enjoyed what we learned. One plus is you can use the facts and formulas from this classs in political debates surrounding climate change.
As others have said, taking this class online is a fantastic way to fill your physical science breadth. Class is super easy-- tests are comprised of homework questions, making studying a breeze, especially if you're good at memorizing misc facts. Romps delivers his lectures in a fun and engaging manner, often including jokes and documentary clips.
He's a good teacher, I felt like I understood the material well. EPS7 was more science focused than I anticipated, which I didn't love, but was overall fine. The class is fairly easy. Would recommend for non-stem people who need to get physical science out of the way.
Literally love this man. The class was super easy, inspirational, funny, and amazing. Really good for physical science breadth. Grade consisted of weekly homework quizzes (super straightforward and no time limit) and 2 midterms/final, which were all really easy if you paid attention in class. Can't recommend enough!
Easiest breadth class I've taken. Homework due every week but can be found on quizlet. 2 midterms and a final are all on quizlet. Easy A, definitely a GPA booster class. Lectures were also quite interesting.
Really enjoyed this class. Took it for a breadth and was an easy A. Loved that he included his son in his recorded lectures - the class was asynchronous which made it easy to work with my schedule. However, you had to take the midterms and finals at the designated time. Grading is based on homework, 2 midterms, and a final (1 attempt for each).
Prof. Romps is a really great professor. EPS 7 was held completely remote, so we just had to watch lectures asynchronously which was really nice. Your grade consists of weekly homework assignments, 2 midterms, and 1 final, pretty standard. The class was more physics/math centered than I thought but he made it easy to understand. Overall great!
Super easy class especially if you want to fulfill breadth requirement! Completely asynchronous-- was never a class I had to stress over. His lectures are easy to follow and he provides good examples.
Pretty easy class. There weren't too many assignments and tests were resonable.
super easy class to satisfy the physical sciences breadth. But make sure you rote memorize the entire lecture material to get an A
Romps is a knowledgeable teacher. He breaks down material in a really digestible way. The class has 14 homework assignments, 2 midterms, and the final, which were all online and multiple choice. The homework was due at 5pm which I thought was inconvenient. He doesn't do late work or rounds grades. But overall, I'd recommend this class.
Professor Romps is an absolute CHAD. He made the class very interesting, even if it was pre-recorded and online. He'll often incorporate his kids into his lectures which makes everything more fun. The class is easy; most of the homework can be found on Quizlet. You should study for midterms and the final, however. This is what gets many people.
Easiest class you will ever take at Berkeley. I didn't do 1 homework assignment which tanked my grade. All the answers to the homework assignments are on Quizlet. The midterms and finals are all questions he pulled from the homework too.
Professor Romps is one of my favorite professors at Berkeley. Although I am not heavily interested in EPS as a field, he makes lectures interesting through real world examples and his humorous personality. Beware that there is a bit of incredibly basic chemistry, and mathematical calculations, primarily driven by facts / memorization, but doable!
Wouldn't let me take my midterm IN ADVANCE because of my grandmother's funeral. After requesting a death certificate and a confirmation letter from the reverend conducting her service, he told me he would not allow me to take the quiz in advance and suggested I reschedule my flight home. This guy sucks lol.
professor romps is a clearly passionate professor. he genuinely cares about the subject matter and provides students with the tools to succeed as homework is an accurate representation of exams. his exams are straightforward as long as you pay attention.
SUCH an easy class as long as u put in the work. 1 Hw assignment a week and the midterms and final were 95% questions from the HWs (only like 3 questions would be new), also HWs are on quizlet :) Lectures are pretty easy to follow along. Just take notes on each lecture and study those + the HWs and u will be chillin
Professor Romps was SO fun and SO easy as well. The lectures all being online made the class very flexible and made studying and doing homework less stressful. I can definitely tell that Professor Romps cares for his job and the subject he is teaching. I loved how passionate he was, and it made for amazing lectures! Take the class; it's great!
The professor himself is super awesome. He is kind and respectful, not only that but he understands where people might be coming from in order to learn the class material. Definitely watch his lectures! He uploads them according to the schedule and if you miss one you might have a tougher time catching up and maintaining a good grade.
Romps is amazing, I recommend this class if you need some units. I randomly chose this class and found myself enjoying it, the HWs and midterms are on Quizlet but it is mostly just a chill class. This class is low stakes and you learn a thing or two because his lectures are charming, never had a lecturer match the charisma like Romps.
Manageable for non-stem majors.
He uploads all the lectures as videos. My fault I didn't get an A. Watch all the lectures and take notes. I stopped halfway through and my grade tanked. REMEMBER TO TURN IN THE HOMEWORK IT IS DUE AT 5 PM. He's super funny and his kid is in some of the lectures. DO NOT RELY ON QUIZLET. The final was 60 minutes for 80 questions, midterms the same.
Fun and funny lectures that are quite well made and deliver the information needed effectively. No issues with his teaching style, but you have to hold yourself accountable to stay on top of the lectures in this class and do flash cards/Quizlets (exams are lw if you actually review tbh). Otherwise, incredibly manageable and interesting class.
This class has almost every assignment on Quizlet. Prof. Romps' lectures are decent, and he seems like a great guy. No late work is allowed AT ALL in this class, which is the only reason I got an A- not an A.
I enjoyed watching his lecture recordings especially because he brought in his kid to test out experiments or concepts!
Prof. Romps is literally one of the best professors I've had. I love his lectures, he has a great sense of humor, homeworks and exams are very fair.
Professor Romps was great! I loved his lectures, experiments with his child, and his assignments and exams are very fair.
I love Prof. Romps' class. Perhaps one of the best classes and professors I've taken at Cal. I love his humor and how much he adores his son. Absolutely recommend this class to anyone.
If you miss homework regardless of your situation, whether you're sick or going through a family issue, this man will never give you a second chance. He is a villain; he ruined my life, my dreams, and, more importantly, my American dream.
Most courses at Berkeley allow dropping the lowest homework/quiz grade—except David Romps' EPS 7. After missing an assignment due to an ER visit from hazing, he denied me even partial credit. As a first-gen minority from South Korea, my family placed their hopes on me, but he crushed those dreams, letting us all down.
I think Dr Romps course was super interesting and I'm glad to have the knowledge I do now. However, he is a very stern and strict grader. There is no clobber policy, very very little extensions, and he does not give extra credit. When a GSI have me the wrong advice and i got a poor grade he refused to change it.
Romps has some sort of personal vendetta against students who have unexpected tragedies, disabilities, or medical emergencies. He does not respect disabled student rights or ADA rights AT ALL. Not sure if it's some rightwing agenda meant to make us "tough" with"no excuses" but it's outright cruel and should be illegal. he needs to be reported.
just not considerate at all of any issues which may come up for students. AT ALL, has the empathy of a slug
Recordings were clear and understandable. Romps seems enthusiastic and wholesome in recordings, but is very strict and doesn't like to be corrected. Emails about concept clarifications or correcting his HW questions leads to a professor that is the complete opposite of enthusiastic and wholesome. Stubborn and unhelpful in the real world.
Literally only 1 homework assignment a week.
Truthfully, it is an online class so if there are any complaints, you are probably the problem. Literally 1 homework assignment a week that is so easy. 1 midterm and a final that are weighted pretty high. Lectures are good. He is not lenient at all with deadlines, but you get enough time to do the assignments.
Though I never communicated with Romps directly, he seemed kind in lecture recordings. Information is presented clearly and he tries to make it as interesting as possible via humour and demonstrations alike. Weekly homework was easy and related to lecture material, as were tests. Easy A, just get it done. Past homework questions available online.
Honestly this is probably gon be the easiest class you take here at Cal. 1 homework assignment per week and you are pretty much prepared for the two midterms and the final by staying on top of the lectures. Prof. Romps is however not very lenient with deadlines so if you miss two to three homework assignments then getting A is gon be difficult.
Prof Romps's lectures, despite being in the form of online recordings, are very entertaining. He is a charismatic speaker and sometimes brings his son on to showcase/simplify scientific concepts. While the weekly hw assignment can be found on Quizlet, I recommend that you at least remember the important equations for the midterms and final.
Prof. Romps is a great lecturer who often brings his kid to test out experiments. While the content is manageable, you need to stay on top of the material and utilize helpful resources like Unstuckstudy in addition to the lectures to succeed.
Prof. Romps was absolutely AMAZING and I found this class to be very interesting and informative. His lectures were straightforward and I found his videos hilarious. The weekly homework assignments are very simple if you watch the lectures and the midterm/final are also manageable if you keep up with the lectures! I loved this class!
Amazing prof. and an interesting course. One assignment a week and you can watch the lectures whenever. Midterms/final are all multiple choice, but definitely look over the lectures as some questions are very specific.
Class is very easy to do well in, but prof is not understanding of person circumstances and will not grant you an extension for any reason, no matter how dire. so if you miss an assignment, your grade will go down significantly so make sure you do not miss more than one or you cant get an A. assignemnts are due at 5, instead of 12 which is annoying
Easy class. 1 assignment per week. Midterms/final is from weekly homework's.
Weekly homework sets, two midterms and one final with questions that come from homework sets. Lectures were simultaneously amusing and informative. Easy but stimulating class!
Very knowledgeable and passionate professor.
Dont take this online course
One of the BEST professors at Cal. The workload is INCREDIBLY manageable. I seriously recommend this class to anyone slightly interested in climate science. You do have to watch all the lectures because the assignments/exams are quite specfic but you really won't care because his lectures are very fun to watch, and are engaging.
He is very passionate about climate change and he is very knowledgeable. However, most of your grade is based on tests and homework and it is very easy to miss a question or two and fall below the grade you want.
Professor Romps is one of the best lecturers at Berkeley. If you are at all interested in atmospheric science, you should take a course with him. However, his grading can be harsh, and this course was uncurved and 80% weighted on exams, so be warned!
amazing professor, he is so passionate about what he teaches and i feel like i learned a lot. grading is only based on multiple choice homework, midterms, and a final, so it can be easy to miss a few too many and quickly get a lower grade than anticipated
Amazing, engaging lectures that really reignited a passion within me for the environment. Only complaint is that the homework focuses a lot on nitty gritty details from lecture so you really have to pay attention. Exams are pretty similar to the homework so you can study that and be fine.
