This class involves a great deal of reading that you must keep up with to do well. There are no quizzes, only 2 papers and 2 exams. He expects a great deal from you on the papers and the exams involve essays and very specific multiple choice, impossible if you haven't read.
A TON of boring reading assignments, very difficult
Brilliant guy. An expert on his subject. Has a remarkable ability to speak lucidly in fully formed paragraphs. This course (taken 1.5 yrs ago) sparked my interest in this field, and I have since begun work on a (hopefully publishable) piece of criticism. Thanks David.
This man enjoys hearing himself talk, and will do so throughout every class period. His assignments are difficult and ridiculously uninteresting. A 6-8 page paper about Life on Mars? Please.
PLEASE spare yourself the pain. Just dont take his class. It is terribly boring and all assignments dealt with space and mars, it's monotonous and so is he. Don't take him if possible.. I mean he knows what he's talking about, but class just drags on for days...
B-O-R-I-N-G. Although Eng12 isn't supposed to be fun. The class was easy, he was just a very boring teacher. He doesn't really answer questions so much as talk about himself. He likes to slip in comments about The New Yorker at least once a week, which is extremely annoying.
Dr. Ross is a wonderful professor. His insights into Romanticism are fascinating and I thoroughly enjoyed going to his class. If you are a dorky English major like me, you will really enjoy this class and Dr. Ross as a person. Very nice man, very helpful. Two 8-12 page papers, and a final exam with 50 multiple choice and two short take home essays.
spare yourself the pain of taking his class. He is VERY BORING and it is annoying to listen to his monotone voice. You watch several sci-fi films and write 3 papers and a few feeders. The work isnt hard, but the time spent in class goes by painfully slow. he put me to sleep in every class. try another english teacher, there has to be better
Professor Ross is excellent. He is absolutely brilliant, offers excellent insights on the works we read, and I sincerely recommend anyone take him. One of the smartest professors I've ever had, and overall a very fair grader.
Don't take this class unless you REALLY love sci-fi. The work load is really heavy...about ten books and four movies to watch outside of class. The exams don't really count, just the papers, so as long as you're a good writer, you'll probably do okay. But David wasn't helpful at all, so be prepared.
David Ross is a very smart guy. But his interest was watching 2001: A Space Odyssey(old edition). It was horrible. However I ended up getting a B out of the class with numerous visits at the writing center and his office. Make sure u get plenty of sleep before coming to his class because he can be boring!
He is really passionate about the literature, but his voice is rather monotonous. He doesn't really encourage class discussion, but his lectures are pretty good - if you can stay awake for them. Grading is not too harsh, but he expects a lot.
I took this film class because I thought it would be fun...BIG mistake! Most of the movies are incredibly long and hard to follow. It didn't turn out quite as hard as I thought, but the lectures are extremely boring, be prepared to zone out for the entire class.
BEST CLASS I'VE EVER TAKEN. It's not suggested for the anti-intellectuals, but for anyone interested in quality film, it's a must. Ross is extremely passionate about film and is one of the most scholarly yet easy-going people I know. If you're reading the other comments, don't heed them unless you exclusively watch mindless blockbusters.
Good class :) He is ridiculously intelligent... could be the smartest person I've ever met. Uses lots of big words but not incomprehensible by any means. I enjoyed this class; great course structure and good book and movie choices for the most part :)
Just absolutely spectacular. I think he's probably one of the few people in the world who can transition between quoting Lolita and discussing it without sounding artless, boring, and stupid in comparison with Nabokov's beautiful prose. He's a brilliant man and a great talker without being incomprehensible or condescending. Hope to have him again!
I learnt a lot from his class. He wrote very helpful comments and suggestions about my papers. This course was not hard: just three papers (each paper has three drafts)and two presentations.
Dr. Ross is a smart guy and I actually feel like I've become a better writer after taking his class. There are only 3 papers, and you submit multiple drafts, allowing you to receive ample feedback. He's kinda dorky and really into foodmovies, but he is a kind person and does not grade very harshly.
David Ross is not what everyone says he is. He knows that he is smarter than you and you constantly feel that idea swirling around your head during each lecture. He is not helpful and very slack with grading. I really wish I would have taken anyone else. Please do not be fooled by these reviews, he is not a good teacher for ENGL 105.
The class doesn't have too much work, but David Ross isn't very helpful at all. The class is very boring, he hates giving As (likes A-s and B+s the most) and he's extremely pretentious. He doesn't like it if you don't write in his style or if you suggest an interpretation of something for a project that he doesn't agree with. Find someone better.
Dr. Ross is incredibly intelligent and interesting, but his lectures can get a little dry. He assigns three big papers, along with a few feeder assignments. In my class, we wrote a research paper, a restaurant review, and a film analysis. He provides helpful detailed feedback, and I feel that I have genuinely improved as a writer.
Dr. Ross is a great lecturer and ENGL143 was very interesting. I would recommend this class to anyone that needs the VP credit. You watch 2 movies a week and discuss them in class. 2 papers and a midterm, basically minimal work. He is also a fair grader!
He was the most annoying teacher. He talks everyday with a powerpoint, and talks about one slide for 15 mins. He asks questions in class and then when you answer he says "mm hmm" and then disagrees with you. He's so picky about giving As and if he gives an A it's an A-. There are group projects too. DON'T TAKE ENGL 105 WITH HIM, you will hate it.
David Ross is a spectacular orator. He is very knowledgable in subject matter and beyond. Helpful if you ask for it. Class not too bad, although it's quite a bit of reading. Show up to class for key points, take two easy multiple choice tests, and write two papers (with generous amount of time to do them) and that's about it.
He is incredibly pretentious and do not think of sharing an opinion that does not align with his own. 3 papers , all 5 to 7 pages each, and 2 feeder assignments. He gives plentiful feedback on each paper, follow the advice and its not difficult to make an A. Agree with what he says and nod your head to lectures. Much harder than other sections.
Dr. Ross is a very nice person and a good professor. His assignments are easy and he gives you plenty of time to finish them. His grading criteria is a bit rough, however. I don't think it's possible to get an A in his class unless you have an unnatural ability at writing papers. He gives great feedback though and I definitely grew as a writer.
Compared to other classes I've heard about, the work load is very small. There's only three papers and you get over a month to write each one. He edits your paper for you before you turn in the final draft, so as long as you take his suggestions you should do fine!
Course is weighted heavily towards forum participation and the 2 papers. Online/Summer, so the reading was pretty heavy for me (books split into 4-6 chunks of reading/night; 40pgs 7 d/wk). I can guarantee if you want an A in the class, you should stay consistent w/reading and quality! posting. Great insights, friendly, fair, & very accommodating!
English 146 with Dr. Ross has been one of my all-time favorite classes. He is a tough grader, and does not hand out As. But the material is super interesting, he lectures (nearly) the entire class period with sporadic student involvement. His take on the material is always super interesting. 2 papers, 1 midterm, 1 final. Would take again!
David Ross is very pretentious and will criticize opinions differing from his. His engl 105 class is just an all-around bad time. It involves a lot of lectures that don't teach anything that a high school class doesn't. Also he says "mm hmmm" to interrupt students, even when he is the one asking the questions.
he can be quite condescending, classes mainly consist of him talking with limited discussion, interrupts students frequently when they're asking questions, doesn't adjust his syllabus even when the university is closed for a long period, tests are the hardest english tests i've ever taken, standards for paper grading are very high,
Dr. Ross is a great person but his lectures are very boring at times. He is an extremely hard grader compared to other 105 professors and rarely hands out A's. He also says "mmhmm" very loud when other people are talking or answering his questions.
David Ross is a very nice man, his lectures don't require anything more than a little participation, but his grading requirements are tough. There are only 3 music-themed papers and 2 feeder assignments. Almost everyone in the class received an A-/B+ for their final grade. Only "exceptional writers" make A's in his 105 courses.
David Ross is extremely educated and knowledgeable. This can be intimidating and can come off as a little pretentious, BUT he clearly knows what he is talking about. The workload isn't much and he gives lots of good feedback. He is also accessible outside of class during office hours. Not an easy A but you will definitely improve as a writer.
Prof Ross gives absolutely no grading criteria in his syllabus so you have no clue how your final grade will be calculated. His class is literally just him talking about his opinions on films and is incredibly boring. He is nice and will help you in office hours, but overall he grades very harshly so an A is impossible.
Dr. Ross is intelligent, but he is not open to any opinions or interests besides his own. He forces you to write music reviews on his favorite music (all rock/jazz from the 60s and 70s), and you have to praise it if you want an A. He is a classic eurocentric professor so don't talk about other cultures. He also brags about Oxford and how UNC sucks.
Do not take unless you want to go to sleep and be graded on criteria not clearly explained. He also says HHMMM when students try to speak really loudly in an attempt the overpower and distract them.
For a first year required course, Dr. Ross is unbelievably hard grader for the assignments he gives. Although there are only 3 papers that count towards the final grade, the philosophy that he takes on for grading is unfair and does not make ANY SENSE. Lectures are also VERY boring and make you want to take nap during the class.
Professor Ross makes English 105 much harder than it needs to be. The assignments are very weird for an intro class, like writing an album review and a movie analysis paper. He gives no criteria for grading, and you have no idea how he calculates the final grade. The lectures are sooo boring, and the way he talks just sounds very pretentious.
Despite all the criticism he gets, Dr. Ross really cares about his students and wants everyone to learn. I don't disagree that the class is much harder than other English 105 classes, but I personally felt it improved my writing because of that. Overall, his class is difficult but rewarding, and he is always available to help outside of class.
Professor Ross isn't awful, but he comes across as pretentious when he speaks. He believed his opinion was the only one that mattered and talked AT students rather than to them. Classes were boring and he makes it hard to get an A--he loves giving B+s. Take 105 with a different professor if you can.
Dr. Ross is simply a great professor. The lectures are certainly dense with ideas and cultural insight but are by no means boring. He's exceedingly well-read and well-spoken, and he gives very detailed feedback on papers (so you know exactly how to improve). Everyone on here complaining that he's a hard grader is just mad that they can't write.
Dr. Ross made this online science fiction class incredibly interesting. He picked a very fascinating selection of films and novels and used forums to spark interesting conversations. He responded to every single forum post that students made. The class didn't feel like school, but more like an exploration of the themes of science fiction.
While this class was majorly asynchronous, I enjoyed the class and Professor Ross. The subject material was interesting, he gave lengthy feedback, and was encouraging. Would take a class with him again.
Professor Ross is a very good professor. He cares about the students and puts all his time and energy into making this class great. He's very smart and passionate about the class and it's noticeable. However, he is a tough grader and the class can get difficult. Needless to say, he definitely helped me become a better writer but the class was hard.
Professor Ross is very nice and wants to help improve every student's writing. Grades heavily depend on three 4-6 page essays. The essays do not have clear guidelines but Professor Ross reads your drafts and gives thoughts and advice. Overall, do not take this class if you want an easy A. Only take it if you really want to improve your writing.
Prof Ross is incredibly knowledgeable & well-spoken. He is a FANTASTIC teacher who really helps you improve your writing. If you are looking for an easy A, don't take this class. His assignments are quite dreadful and boring. However, I notice much improvement in my writing that I would 10000% recommend Prof Ross to anyone serious about writing.
Dr. Ross helped me improve my writing immensely. He provided thorough feedback that elevated my work to a new level. His assignments are challenging, but if you are skilled in critical analysis and can write with literary flair, you'll earn an A in his class. Take Professor Ross you'll become a better writer.
Dr. Ross taught my honors seminar on Sci-fi media. The lectures can be a bit dry, but if you take good notes you'll be fine. Be aware that he only lectures on what he thinks about the books/films you go through, so you can only really be creative in the writing assignments. Otherwise very informative and gives good writing feedback.
Professor Ross was an amazing English teacher! He provided great feedback and really boosted my confidence as a writer. Be sure to have the drafts of your essays ready to go for the peer reviews - that feedback is crucial.
Dr. Ross was very nice and provided good feedback on papers. This class required us to watch about 30 films, which was a bit intense. The exams were very difficult, but he curves them. He does not give a clear layout of how much the papers and tests are weighted, and his lectures are all based on his interpretations of the films.
Professor Ross definitely helped me become a better writer. He did imply sometimes that anyone without his views is wrong. He did grade too harshly for an ENGL 105 professor, so make sure your papers are in good shape before submission. The digital media assignment was fun but time-consuming and not related to English or writing in any way.
His grading is very strict, but he is willing to help you if you are obviously struggling with writing. As an international student, it is hard for me to get a good grade in his class, even though I spend more than 30 hours on each paper. However, he always returns me high-quality feedback for my drafts, improving my writing and English overall.
Dr. Ross has unrealistic expectations and grades very harshly for an English 105 course. I think a lot of the issue was that he comes up with very unique writing assignments that dont have clear criteria. If you want a somewhat easy A dont take this class.
Professor Ross is very nice and willing to work with you if you need to set up a meeting or for writing help. However, his expectations for a 100-level course are ridiculously high. Unless you are Emily Dickenson or Jane Austen, don't expect to get an A on a paper.
Do not take this class if you want to keep a decent GPA. He grades at an oxford level for an entry level class. Very nice and helpful but does not grade fairly nor clearly
Couldn't stand Prof Ross. He's pretentious and not open to any other opinions, and borderline disrespectful of students. He does give really thorough feedback on essays, so if you do what he says (repeat his opinions) you can score well. Class is entirely taught on his favorite songs and movies (all 50s-60s jazz and blues) and is incredibly boring
Professor Ross is a nice teacher who is understanding. He is definitely not one of the easier professors for ENGL 105 but if you have him don't worry about it. He is obviously very qualified but won't give out A's very easily. I will say my writing improved a lot because of this class and his feedback.
Dr. Ross is a good professor who does care about your improvement. Your paper grades heavily depend on weather or not he actually agrees with your points, which can get annoying. Make sure to particpate in class, since he deos factor it in your grade. His office hours are usually helpful. My writing has definitely improved this semeser.
It took me a little while to warm up to Dr. Ross and his teaching style, but once I did I really enjoyed his class. He is super smart and knows his topics inside and out. This class ended up being pretty philosophical.
Dr. Ross definitely gets valid criticism for his.. staunch.. opinions. He's obviously very knowledgeable and enjoys some back-and-forth discussion, so don't take the debate too personally. Engage in the material, try to appreciate the quirks and take his thoughtful feedback to heart- and you'll end up a better writer for it.
Professor Ross will teach you a lot but his class is not easy. Taking his ENG 105 genuinely did make me a much better writer, but it was sort of boring. Also, he tends to sometimes have a condescending attitude towards students, this did not bother me too much but I know many of my classmates hated it.
Professor Ross was a very thought-provoking professor. His class was very interesting and the tests were not hard if you read the texts and pay attention. There is A LOT of reading so if you do not like reading DO NOT take this class. The midterm and the exam are based on the readings and the class discussions. The course is only based on 4 grades.
Professor Ross was very knowledgeable and really cared about the topics he discussed in class. Loved the class but so unnecessarily difficult. The content isn't hard its just so much material in so little time. I was doing hours of reading every day. This was a summer asynch class for me and it was unclear what my grade was until the class ended.
Dr. Ross was hands-down my favorite professor this semester. He was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the course and his class style was very engaging. There are definitely a lot of readings and other materials (films) to complete outside of class but if you stay on top of it, you'll be fine!
LOOOOOVE professor Ross!!! He is very passionate about the films we discussed. He was clear about what would be on exams and graded papers fairly. Attendance was mandatory but he let a few absences slide. He made me really interested in movies and while his lectures were long, they were interesting. Great professor.
Dr. Ross gave extensive and personalized feedback that was extremely helpful. It is clear that he cares about his students improving in their writing. I so appreciated his attentiveness especially considering it is just a freshman required course. If you don't want to have tons of busy work and to actually learn something in 105, take Dr. Ross.
Professor Ross was brilliant but don't take this class. I didn't take AP, I wasn't prepared to jump into a classic literature level of writing. I couldn't improve my grade, I went to the writing center, office hours, and it was useless. Also, he will call on Indian students to translate Hindi, even if you don't speak it. Why is he teaching Freshman
I would love to read an in-concise 800 page autobiography of this man's life. He is something else.
I have complicated feelings. On the bright side, I felt my writing improved under his instruction. For every essay draft, he wrote paragraphs of feedback. Incredible attention to detail. However, as for the actual class, it felt unnecessary... lots of tangents + condescending. He's extremely knowledgable, and believe me, he will remind you...
If you want an easy-A gen-ed professor (fair enough), then choose someone else. However, learning from Dr. Ross legitimately improved my writing skills. The essay topics were generally engaging and his draft feedback is gold. His actual lectures are hit-or-miss; one day it is an insightful lesson on concision, and the next is a huge tangent.
Very reading heavy class. Took the class online so did not get to know much about him, but seemed to be very passionate about the books and films at hand. I am not sure what my grades for any of the assignments were after the class ended as he had ended the course on canvas and directly put in the final grade. Not bad but prolly wouldn't take agin.
Dr. Ross is a very particular man; his essay prompts were very odd and didn't allow much room for your own interpretation. His feedback was very subjective, and my grades on the essays never improved throughout the semester. He tries to be helpful if you stay for office hours, but he kind of drones on (he does in lectures, too).
Look, I understand why some dislike him. He can be a little insensitive, out of touch, and he is not tech savvy. However, he is absolutely passionate. He cares tremendously about students genuinely improving and will give you all the help you want if you ask. Also, he is forgiving. He has an abrasive personality but meets students where they are.
Professor Ross is extremely wise and well-spoken but continuously goes on tangents every class, and the lectures are almost useless. This class goes way beyond what a first-year requirement should ask of you, and you won't get an A unless you're Stephen King or Shakespeare himself.
Ross is a lovely guy, but his grading criteria for English 105 is too harsh. Your grade is dependent on your natural skills as a writer. I spent hours revising my papers and could not get over a B+. For 105, this should not be the case. If you are Shakespeare, go ahead; he will improve you. If not, your grades will suffer.
Dr. Ross is a brilliant guy but should NOT be teaching a English 105 class. He's a tough grader and it's unfair how broad the spectrum of difficulty is for Engl105. Do not take him unless you are passionate about english. His classes are attendance mandatory and he sits in a chair and talks about irrelevant things the entire class period.
Professor Ross is a very smart professor, but is way too far hard of a grader for an English 105 class. He provided good feedback for essays, but didn't take into consideration most people taking this course that it's their first college-level english course. He also had very strong opinions and could come off as pretentious lecture.
If you talk in class and offer your opinions during his unnecessary and endless tangents, he'll love you. Expect to write and expect LOTS of feedback in a pretty condescending tone. I wouldn't NOT take him, he'll definitely improve your writing, just be very wary of your grade.
UNC-Chapel Hill is one of the top schools in the country. It should not be admitting students who complain about having to show up to class or who moan when a professor has actual standards for written work. Ross's standards are high. But he's very thorough in his advice about how to meet them. He's a great teacher, if a little idiosyncratic.
I have few qualms with Dr. Ross as a person, but I would advise against taking his courses if you have a history with sexual trauma. He would often make derogatory and uncomfortable remarks about fictional women and almost every piece of media assigned included and poorly addressed the topic of sexual violence. Please be wary when registering!
I took this class because it seemed interesting, but realized Professor Ross was teaching a class on something he didn't have any knowledge on. First thing he told us in this class on the use of AI was "I have never used AI in my life." He would cut us off mid-sentence when we would talk in class to express his own views. Do not take his class.
Intense of a grader for English 105. I showed up to every lecture (except for 1), actively participated in class, and showed improvement in my writing. He would constantly leave degrading comments on my work and give extremely confusing advice. Makes weird comments about women too! DO NOT TAKE! Please just take an easy English for your own good
If think if I could go back in time and have the choice between taking 105 with David again or pulling out all my hair one by one, I would choose the second option. If I had to pick one word to describe his class it would be frustrating. He grades HARSH, lectures are insufferable, and he treats his opinion as right and anything else is wrong.
It's clear that Dr. Ross is very knowledgeable and passionate about English. My main issue with him was how opinionated he was. English should be about interpretation, but with Ross, there is a right (his personal opinion) and a wrong (any other perspective, no matter how well-supported it may be).
We had zero assignments the entire semester (other than online discussion boards), and not a single grade was entered into Canvas, so I didn't have any idea of my grade until I received my final grade. There's so much daily reading, and even in an opinion-based seminar class, if your view goes against Dr. Ross's, you are "wrong" (he will say so!)
Dr. Ross is clearly a very knowledgable man, but we spent most of our discussion-based seminar listening to him talk about *his* opinions. I did not know my grade all semester... But, there are no essays only short-form discussions posts. It's a super easy class as long as you can stay on top of the readings (YOU 100% NEED TO DO ALL OF THEM!!!!!).
