Hated this class. He was very knowledgeable, but he lacked the ability to provide a full overview of subjects. He focused on minor stuff and he did not cover what other classes were covering. He is very nice though and he helps as much as he can. If you are already into biology, take him. You'll love it. If notm find someone easier.
It's a hard class but you won't mind going to it. He's a very smart/funny man but lacks the ability to educate others. He is however very helpful and will answer any questions you have.
test are really hard, he talks about random information that has no relation to biology
AWFUL. Brags about how the class cannot pass his tests. average test grade on "easiest test" was a 42%. No homework or extra credit. simply open book, note and unlimited time quizzes that nobody can pass and ridiculously hard tests.
The lectures are so boring! And the quizzes are really hard, even though they're open book and open notes. I would recommend finding another teacher!
Very hard class. He gives quiz's each week that are extremely difficult, and the tests are equally as hard. Does provide a significant curve to boost your test grades though. I would not recommend taking this class with this professor.
people common.this guy is not a bad teacher. if you are a bio major and you want to know principles of biology take him. his test and quizes are challenging but he devotes a lot of outside class time to help you. he wants you to think for yourself and most people just want the answers given to them just clear cut. but its not high school anymore
DO NOT DO NOT TAKE HIM! tests you on little things that he never says and no one makes above a 40 on his tests.
Terrible professor. The class average on all the assignment is well below failing. The tests and quizzes he gives do not correspond with the readings or key terms and very few items can be extrapolated from the lectures. He knows his stuff but he can't teach at all.
I agree w/ most of the other rates. The tests are really hard.. & so are the quizzes even tho they are open book/note. However, he curves the tests alot. I shoulda got a 57 and got an 84. He also drops 2 lowest quiz grades & lowest test grade at the end. He's a very nice man & knows his info, but I must admit that I am def struggling in his class..
Awesome professor! He is extremely helpful just ask questions if you have one, you can't just sit there and expect to absorb the info. Very nice and does a lot to help you learn. Great style of teaching as well as a since of humor.
hmm, here I am again... and I must say that Rudel's tests and quizzes continued to be difficult, but the curves are amazing. it was a rough ride, but I'm so glad that I had Rudel. he knows bio is hard.. so i think that's why he has helped us all out with his test drops and curves. I am very, very happy :)
Expect to study. This isn't easy, and you shouldn't expect an easy A.
Good lectures, hard tests, expects you to apply what's taught.
I like to think I can retain information on an above average level. Don't take him. His quizzes are impossible and he will ask you to describe one process, but the choices contain two processes barely covered. Yeah... Just don't bother taking him.
He speaks in circles around himself. He never pays attention to people with questions. He says OK at least 20 times per lecture
Well I had an interest in Biology and though I had a clear understanding of the basics for the most part. Dave's quiz, although he pushes you to take them, are harder than his test and in class his lectures are extremely boring most people leave early. He does not give book numbers or even chapters to refer to during his lecture.
I'm currently in Dr. Rudel's Biology class, and I'm not enjoying it. Biology is my favorite subject and comes naturally to me, but I struggle in the class because he asks very vague questions on tests and quizzes. His lectures are confusing because he jumps around a lot. Not a bad guy, but I don't think he's a very good teacher.
Tough Class, but its bio so its expected. Very helpful when listing resources for help but Test and Quizzes cover such broad topics there's no way to study everything he goes over. You MUST read the text book, they complement his lectures fairly well.. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE! This guy can be pretty harsh.
This class is incredibly hard. I took AP Bio previous to taking this class&it was nowhere close to as difficult as this class is. Dr. Rudel is a really nice guy who is clearly a genius, but it is hard to understand concepts when he teaches them. Tests are horribly hard&so are quizzes. It is impossible to pass them if you just cram the night before.
Horrible teacher. If you like biology in any way, don't take this class because he will make you hate it in the first 2 weeks. His quizzes are rdiculous, powerpoints are basic, they dont help you on the quizzes tho.Accept the fact that you will probably be going to tutoring. oh,& for the tests, look at all the figures and pictures.
I used to love bio and was an intended bio major until I took this class. His exams bring tears to my eyes, no joke. If you want an easy A or even a somewhat easy B or C this is not the class to take. On the bright side he does curve his exams because people do so horribly bad on them. Last one was curved 35 points so I got an 85.
He is a nice guy if you try to talk to him and get to know him but he isn't the best teacher. His quizzes and tests are really hard because of how he words the questions and he jumps around in the book a lot. But like I said, he isn't a mean person.
The only reason that Mr. Rudel's ratings are low is because it is a very hard class. But that's to be expected because it's bio! Mr. Rudel is very generous when it comes to helping your grade(He curves like crazy, and drops the lowest test, quiz and attendance). He always holds review sessions and is always willing to answer questions.
Okay, I was previously one of the bad reviews. Rudel is a very nice guy. You'll hate him until around the middle or end of the semester because his class is really hard, but it is bio. He MAKES you learn the info which is important if youre going to be taking more bio classes. He stayed in a review for 3 hours helping students. Dedicated professor
Wonderful teacher. READ THE TEXTBOOK and understand that this is college level. Questions are conceptual not term and definition. Understand that Biology isn't easy. To those who are reading bad reviews, it is because they are lazy and probably shouldn't even be a Biology major.
Rudel grows on you. He is a VERY nice and helpful professor. Expect to learn a lot. You have to truly understand the subject to do well in this class. Take him, he keeps class interesting.
I'm going to try and not be biased about this one. Dr. Rudel is very knowledgeable and dedicated to his classes. With that said, he is a very challenging teacher. Powerpoints aren't helpful unless you go to class. Very hard, attendance is essential to your grade.
Hard course, this isn't high school. Questions are all applied, just memorization and definitions won't help. Really good reviews. Answers any questions. You have to read the book to complement the lectures and he tells us the book chapters covered. A nice guy, I think he cares about his students learning.
Rudel is an awesome bio prof. Although the course itself is difficult (it is for bio majors), he genuinely cares about the success of his students and gives random pep talks about bio careers. He takes random attendance but he usually tries to keep the lecture interesting. Don't take for an easy A but if you want to learn bio, he's your guy.
Doctor Dave's class is fairly hard if you do not take it seriously. In order to pass, you will need to understand the concepts of each topic, not just definitions. He can be very generous regarding your final grade and he curves every test. He also drops your lowest quiz grade. He is a nice guy and he tries to make the class interesting.
I absolutely love Dr. Rudel! Yes, his class is difficult, and you must study hard to understand concepts, but this is college. He will go out his way to help you to understand anything you have questions about. He curves EVERYTHING including final grades, so an A is def. possible. Def. recommend him, I would love to take him again.
Outstanding professor. This man actually cares for his students. I loved going to his class everyday becausee there was so much to consume and learn. Rudel pushed me to understanding. I took AP Biology in high school and did not learn anything but Dr. Rudel actually taught me countless topics that I was never aware of.
Best course ever!! No real text. All problems and group work. Expect to learn a lot. I LEARNED SO MUCH. I never had a course like this before. I wish they were all like this one. I really loved this guy and this class.
All problem and group work course. A lot of group work in class. No real text so coming to class is a must! Awsome course I learned a lot. Wish he taught some other courses.
David, David, David! Pretty funny guy. You better start making friends bc the quizzes are HARD! I made a 100+ on all of them but thats only bc i worked with a group. So their not that hard. His tests are straight from lecture, the quizzes and the book, so yes you actually have to study and understand ! Go to class people!
Dr. Rudel is by far one of the most proficient professors at East Carolina University. Biology is a hard major and not made for everyone(as seen by other reviews). He is clear and concise when he explains information, gives review sessions before each test and implements built in extra credit AND a curve on all exams. I learned a lot from him!
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE. He had horrible lecture notes and his quizzes and test are hard!!!! He gives very vague questions and non of the questions fully make sense. HE IS NOTTTTTTTTT GOOOD
Dr. Rudel is most definitely the BEST teacher I have ever had! He has a way to bring things to anyone's level with awesome (and most times hilarious)analogies. Yes he makes it difficult, but biology is not supposed to be easy and you will learn SOOOO much if you just do what he says and try to pay attention. 10 STARS!!!!
Dr. Rudel is an awesome teacher. I made An A+ on every exam. Had to study very hard though. Overall great class though, i am a Bio major
The ONLY reason I passed this class at all was because I ignored every word he said in his lectures and read the book. His quizzes and exams had nothing to do with what he taught in class, so the whole class failed the first exam because we were told NOT to read the book, when in reality reading the book is your only chance of passing.
A very hilarious guy and he knows about what he is teaching. Sometimes a little confusing, but he is there to help you if you need. Quizzes are extremely hard and confusing at times because of the language he writes it in. However, he does curve the tests and final so that's a blessing. Recommend to read the textbook although not needed in class.
This professor counts attendance, so you must be there to get the 10 points. His lectures are clear, but there is a ton of material covered in one lecture. You have to work hard for your grade. His quizzes are weekly and very difficult. They do not reflect the test at all.
His lecture may seem helpful but just wait til you take the quizzes and test. They are honestly extremely difficult. You basically have to teach yourself. He doesn't assign homework so your grade is based on the weekly quizzes, exams, and attendance. He curves the test but the highest exam grade I could get was a C. He has a nice personality though
Another teacher covered him for one day and I learned more from him than I did from Rudel the entire semester. Read the book and take the quizes in big groups because the questions are really hard to understand because of how they are phrased. I had my senior bio major friend help with a quiz and with three tries he could still only get a 90.
On a lot of the quizzes, it was easy to goggle answers, but the exams were hard. He was very nice and had little corny jokes in class. Attendance was checked randomly.
By far the hardest professor i ever had. His test are extremely hard and his lectures may seem helpful but are barely useful. Only way i passed the weekly quizzes was by going to the tutoring center (they even struggled with it to). He randomly takes attendance, hes very corny and once again his test are extremely hard but he drops the lowest one.
HE IS AWFUL
Not sure why I had him for chemistry when he's a BIO professor, but very bad idea on ECU's part. Don't understand a word he says. It's almost impossible to get a 100 on the weekly BB quizzes. He's very confusing, he likes to teach up to the very last minute of class and speed through the last few slides in order to end class on timber u miss info.
chem 1130 is hard to begin with and rudel makes it that much harder. doesn't create his own powerpoints yet reads directly off them. never taught chem before which made it even hard to try and learn. I've heard great things about his bio classes but DONT TAKE HIM FOR CHEM!
I dont understand the rude comments? Professor Rudel is seriously the most helpful teacher that I've had at ECU. Yes he's class is hard but its chemistry, its suppose to be hard. He was always there to help me on quizzes and how to study for my exams. As long as you ask for help you'll make nothing lower than a 100 on quizzes and homework!
He actually taught my Chem 1130 class this semester. I was grade replacing it so this was my second time taking it. He explain the information so much better than my first professor who doesn't even teach here anymore. He is awesome and gives a curve on every test!! Would SO recommend!!! Also only takes attendance sometimes!
Loveeeeeeed him! He made this class very easy to understand and even though it's tough, he will sit there and explain it and explain it if you ask him! Great professor!
Great guy. Will go over anything if you get in his lab to see him. Hard quizzes. I think he was always fair. He never asked anything we haven't covered.
Took him for Chem 1150 lab, really nice and helpful! The labs are relatively easy and he is always there to answer your questions! Kind of a weird guy, and always looks like he just rolled out of bed, but he is really chill! There are quizzes before each lab, but they're pretty easy, and only 2-3 questions.
This is my second time taking Chem1130 and he is SO much better than my last professor. He drops the lowest test and quiz grade, and 2 missed attendances. He actually puts the material into real life terms and how we can use it as a future nurse, doctor etc. Takes random attendance for 10%. Didn't use the book at all, but made an A in the class!
Rudel is the best professor to take 1130 with. His tests are not difficult, very to the point. He has four tests, not including the final. One test score gets dropped. One quiz is dropped. Two attendance grades are dropped. Did I mention he curves?! His test curves are life saving. He makes all of his own tests, so they are straight from notes.
Rudel is amazing! This was my second time taking chem 1130 and he really made it understandable and easy. He applied the information to real life situations as nurses or professionals in the medical field. For the people who said he was awful didn't have carter for 1130 the first time. I ended this class with a C- the first time and an A w/ Rudel
Great teacher! Very helpful and clear. His exams are clear and he curves them all! Expect to do homework and a weekly quiz. I would definitely recommend him to anyone that needs to take Chem 1130!
I had Dr. Rudel for Chem 1130 and he was really clear and really knew how to explain everything. I really enjoyed his class.
Dr. Rudel is not clear about certain chemistry-related topics and will just rephrase what he has already said if you ask for help. He assigns weekly quizzes that are impossible to pass without a tutor, and sometimes they are even clueless. His exams are 70% memorizing properties of things and almost nothing related to actual chemical processes.
"Does that make sense to everybody?" That's his catch phrase. He does random attendance and he also grades attendance. Go to his office hours and get him to know you because he will certainly go out of his way to help you if you show him you care about passing this class. USE THE TEXTBOOK for mastering Chem homework!
Rudel is not the easiest teacher, but with some effort a good grade is possible. He has weekly blackboard quizzes that are VERY tough, however he drops one of these and gives you three attempts. He suggests you take the quiz with others and a 100 is possible. Study his power points for the test and you will pass. CHEM1130
I took this class over the summer which was definitely a poor life decision, but it's really not impossible to get an A or B in Rudel's class if you show up and put in the effort. He drops your lowest exam score, which is pretty generous. Use the study guides! And for the love of god, love yourself enough to not take chemistry over the summer.
"Does this make sense?" is something you'll always here in this class. Overall, a pretty knowledeable professor. Makes you work for that "A."
Dr. Rudel is a nice professor and taught my CHEM 1150 lab. He is very competent and will answer all of your questions... and make sure that he answers your question in its entirety. He was very slow to give back papers, however I don't know if he was the one grading or his TA. Overall, I found the lab to be difficult. Prepare accordingly!!
Rudel is an amazing professor. He will go out of his way to explain the material. His tests match up with the material he goes over in class. He doesn't assign a crazy amount of homework and is overall a super nice professor. He actually cares about his students and if you just show up and pay attention an A should be easy to receive.
Loved Professor Rudel he is a really cool guy, if you don't pass then you shouldn't be taking chemsitry
Rudel isnt horrible but he isn't the greatest either. He curves the tests a lot which is sweet but his weekly quizzes are hard and mastering chemistry hw is confusing and he wont help u with it. don't skip class bc u will miss material thats hard to understand,
Rodel is a great professor and he is very straight forward. The quizzes are hard so taking them with a tutor or friend is recommended. The first 2 tests are the easiest but the 3 and 4 one are more difficult. He curves so that is a blessing. When he says FLASHCARD MOMENT you need to make sure you make them. Hard but he gives everything needed.
Overall chem 1130 is a hard class and you probably will not be able to achieve an A without studying, but Rudel is a good professor. He drops the lowest test grade and master chem hw is mostly in the text book, but his weekly quizzes are hard and you should do them in a study group. Rudel is kind and he cares about his students.
Dr. Rudel is a pretty reasonable professor, chem 1130 in my opinion was much easier than chem 1120. Drops your lowest test AND quiz. TAKE QUIZZES WITH FRIENDS. GO TO CLASS. ATTENDANCE IS 10% OF YOUR GRADE. And a lot of the answers to the mastering chem hw is in the back of the textbook. First two tests are easy, last two are more difficult.
Rudel is a pretty nice guy and is very into everything he teaches. He takes attendance randomly so it's always essential to attend class. Because he is so knowledgeable about chemistry, he tends to go into other topics when explaining something during lecture, which can be confusing at times. He's overall a decent professor.
I only had him for lab but he mad it so much better than any lab I've had prior to this one. He is upbeat and willing to help, while he is sarcastic, it's usually pretty funny and never meant to be hurtful. Really great guy, I enjoyed having him.
I had him during a summer course. He was a great teacher. Made sure everybody understood before going on and offered to stay after class if you needed extra help. Also had us complete problems on the board to make sure we all got it.
Dr. Rudel is funny and really nice. Hell answer any question you have and sit with you until you understand it. The only thing i hated about this class was that i felt like i never knew what i was doing bc the lab manual had such poor instructions. Grading is pretty strict, just do all of your work and youll be fine.
Dr. Rudel is not bad of a Chem 1151 lab instructor as people thought. He is helpful during the lab and he knows the lab material and the course content which helped me in Chem 1150. Just realize that his TA grades everything and that is something aggravating
Dr. Rudel is a funny and good professor, he makes the labs enjoyable and is willing to talk with you during office hours if you are struggling. The only complaints I have are about the course work, which Dr. Rudel can not do anything about, but other than that he is a good professor.
Dr. Rudel is one of the best chemistry teachers I have ever had. Although he was my lab instructor, he presented and clearly explained all topics we executed in the labs. He is very helpful and funny. Attendance is mandatory, so are lab coats, goggles, pants, closed toed shoes and a Lab Manual. I full-heartedly recommend taking him.
Dr. Rudel is a great professor. Exams are curved and if you study you can make an A. the class is not meant to be easy; you're probably a nursing major so please understand this. I got an A and I never usually get a whole A!!! He is also really funny and i have never been bored in this class. do take with Rudel!
Rudel was a great lab instructor. Was there to answer questions and helped you with your grade whenever he could. Told you what was on the practical and made us laugh. Definitely recommend.
Rudel honestly made chem1130 a lot better. It is a very hard and demanding class but he is there for you every step of the way. His first 2 tests were the easiest for me, and then the focus of the class switches halfway through. He curves the tests a lot so that helps. Get ready for a ton of mastering chem and weekly quizzes online. Very hard class
Solid professor. I enjoyed his lectures and the music videos he would start them out with. You have to really study and want to work hard for that good grade. He is super reasonable and realizes when something has gone wrong on his side. I wish I was able to enjoy this class in person!
Dr Dave was not one of the most efficient graders. He waited until two days before class ended to grade everything and left people failing. When asking for help he is almost impossible to get a response from. Expect 5-6 assignments a week in this class with very little help. Groupchats will save your life!
He waited two days before our final to grade our assignments and has yet to finish grading everything. The assignments that he did grade offered little to no helpful feedback and when you email him for help, he takes an extremely long time to respond. The material isn't hard, but don't expect him to be the one to help you understand it. MAKE GC'S!
I really loved rudel. His class was really hard but if you go to tutoring and his review sessions before tests you will do fine. Make sure you do your mastering chemistry it's a huge part of your grade. He is really nice and easy to talk to. His lectures are really long tho so be prepared.
Enjoyed his class, and he seems to genuinely want you to be successful. He posted lectures and held voluntary reviews before each test. Mastering Chemistry homework is pretty tough, but he gives you plenty of time to complete it. I also took advantage of online tutoring from the Pirate Academic Center for this class and found that very helpful.
Not gonna sugar coat it. For one chapter there is a 2-4 part lecture, usually an hour to an hour and a half long.... EACH! In each lecture he restates "you should know this" and "its easy, it really is". Waits forever to post homework, only things that go in the grade book are the 5 tests throughout the course and an average homework grade.
His lectures are really really long.. like 4hrs long for one topic. He also never ever responds to emails. His test are also easy because they are focused on mastering chem (which can be challenging) and the practice exams from pasc. He holds review sessions but they don't really help. You should definitely invest in the book.
He is a terrible professor he claimed that I never did the final. I reached out to him 3 times and all he said was " still thinking about what to do with you".
Take professor Rudel if you can. He makes it obvious what is going to be on the final well ahead of time and prepares you for the practical very well. The grading policy is frustrating, but just make sure all of your group's members have a good proposal/pre-lab submitted and you'll be okay
David is one of the best chemistry professors I have ever taken. He actually knows how to teach organic chemistry in a way that majority of people understand. He really cares about his students and also makes lot of funny jokes during the lectures. He loves to give "flash card moments" for tests to try and help people with studying for tests.
i do love this professor and i did learn a lot…however i wish he stayed on track to the course plan. I've taken this professor twice now once for 1120 and once for 1130. both times we had to take two tests and 1 final in the last three weeks ( we have 4 tests and 1 final for the whole course) he is very passionate ab what he's teaching but ugh damn
Loved Dr. Dave! Attendance was not take everyday, but beware he takes it randomly at times and it count towards your grades. Although showing up benefits you because his lectures do correlate to the exam. He does take a little to get through the chapters so exams towards the end of the semester are on a crunch time. He truly wants the best for you!
He managed our time so poorly we've had only two exams before our final, and didnt cover the most important topics. He gives out practice problem sets, but he has not even finished grading the ones we submitted in September. He doesnt use Canvas grading algorithm + doesnt show how to calculate your grade. It leaves you unsure about your progress.
