At first i didn't think i would like Sacks, but by the end of the term he had grown on me. I had him for University Essay Writing, which was the easiest class I've ever had. But still, he made an effort to get to know us, and kept the class in order.
Very bad Treats us like we're in high school. And fails us if we skip 3 classes. Definitly not a good prof and is not at all interesting
His classes seemed a bit like highschool, but I didn't mind this class. He respects us, which I like. Overall, I liked him.
Worst teacher of my life...learnt nothing
Overall he's a good teacher, just can get rather boring, very monotone. Kinda like being in highschool all over again. If you go to class do your assignements (which are at least one a week) you can pass with a good grade.
Avoid. Extreme dependance on the text, and lectures were basically us going through the text book. The assignments and quizzes were very average. Spent way too long on very simple concepts.
Sacks is a really good professor though I didn't like the selection of his TAs..well 1 TA..David Gorny ..Horrible TA..made a mistake all the time while marking!...overall really good class...i think one of the most helpful classes in University!..assignments,tests,exam were fair.REALLY HELPFUL PROFESSOR..I RECOMMEND HIM
I thought he was over all a very good professor. He's friendly, gets to know his students and doesn't judge you based on your marks. He was easy to go talk to when I needed help and made a lot of concepts a lot clearer and easier to understand rather than when learned in high school. He was strict about attendance, but lenient if you talked to him.
Absolute favourite teacher. Good sense of humour and keeps class interesting
he has the worst TAs ever
Passable, but assumes that everybody's a cheating sneak. Still grades fairly, however. Passing, and even getting a good grade, is easy as long as you go to the classes and write the weekly assignments.
very boring class, talked to us like children. nice person overall but not a fan of his teaching methods. can't use laptops either
i found him hilarious, always covered in chalk. not the most exciting subject to teach so i think he did an alright job. nothing he assigned was difficult and is an easy marker. he teaches you what you need to know and understood that we were bored. changes the 830 slot to 840 and gives 'optional classes' that you dont have to attend.
I was pleasantly surprised with this prof. He comes off as a hardass in the beginning but I found that he was fair and helpful. He gives plenty of quizzes and opportunities to get more marks. He makes jokes all the time and tries to make the class more interesting. I would recommend this prof and to not let first impressions mean everything.
verry funny teacher! teaching style is OK! but he really have a bad TA!!!!!!!OMG!
Easy prof, very cool and laid back. Lets class out early all the time. Lots of grammar quizzes and some reading quizzes throughout. Feels like a high school English class.
Loved this Prof. Super clear on expectations. Make-up tests avail. Great teacher.
He is simply a brilliant prof. Great teaching style, awesome accent especially, this guy is from new jersey so listen to his class reminds me the moment watching The Sopranos. Class is easy, and he sets the make-up test which is great.
He was a good prof, but the TA was what gave me a good mark in the class. He reminds you about your assignments all the time! And he takes attendance so you can't skip
Probably the funniest english teacher out there!! Relates all the important things in the class back to his home life in New Jersey. Very easy to speak to if you have any questions. Takes attendance so you have to go but he's hilarious so there's no problem
Very nice prof! Clear on expectations. It's like a high school class. :)
He is genuinely an awesome prof! He takes the time to learn everyone's names, which is very rare in a prof. He's very helpful and clear about what he expects, and he is a fair marker. Definitely one of my favourite profs so far!
He's the best ENG1131 prof in uOttawa. He teaches so well and explains amazing. I wish there were more classes I can take with him. You should give preference to him over any other prof teaching the course. There is so much to learn from him!
Definitely go to class. Take all the quizzes, quickly review the rules before them. It's obviously not very hard for a native speaker, but nitpick to do well.
Went into the exam with a A somehow failed the exam and finished with a c because my essay wasn't good enough. He did not explain my final grade to me at all. My mark dropped tremendously I do NOT recommend this professor.
His tests and quizzes come from in class examples and straight from your textbook. There's very little material to learn, and it's very easy to learn it. And despite his disorganization, prof. Sacks is very nice and has a good sense of humour. I just wish his classes weren't mandatory: he never preps and with the simplicity, it feels long.
Awesome professor! One of the best English professors ever! Highly recommended to take ENG1131 with him as prof. He's so funny, friendly and great at explaining concepts. Great accent. You will remember most of what he explained after you completed ENG1131. His assignments, tests and exams are easy, just devote time to studying ENG1131.
Professor Sacks is not an extremely hard marker when it comes to papers, but not exactly easy, either. Can go without the grammar textbook, but you need the essays one. You'll hate that attendance is mandatory because like all English classes, his is very dry. Unorganized, but funny! Great accent (New Jersey). Will help you develop strong theses.
Funny prof. Very fair and helpful. Course is not very interesting.
Hands down the nicest professor I've had the privilege to meet in first year. He tries his best to make the class enjoyable. He's a very funny guy and a very straightforward and hard-working individual. Would strongly recommend him.
David Sacks is by far the best English prof I've ever had. He kept things interesting throughout the entire 3 hour evening lectures. He was able to meet outside of class hours to regraded my paper and exam essay because I thought I received a lower mark than I should have. It ended up raising my marks. His class is worth taking.
Such an amazing professor who actually cares about his students. He was always helpful and answered any questions to the best of his ability. Exams were super fair as choices were provided and you only had to answer X amount of them. Questions cover a wide variety of topics so you are guaranteed to at least answer some. He was also funny as well.
Seriously one of the best and kindest profs ever. He goes out of his way to help everyone and emails you as well as posting on blackboard to make sure you know everything. Respects the fact that you want a better mark if u go see him. Variety of questions to choose from when tested. Funny too. He will get frustrated sometimes but its cuz he cares!
Just take him; he's one of the best! Very helpful in&out of class. He makes topic clear&interesting. For essays, just make sure to incorporate every grammar/essay writing techniques learned in this class and guaranteed good marks.
Really tough grader. Was alright but not the best
Chose this prof considering all the high ratings in the past; however, I was not impressed. You most definitely had to work for your mark but one thing is that he is helpful if you need it.
He is crystal clear in his expectations. He's a respected journalist, so that's kinda cool! He is also very understanding, as I lost my thesis one time. :'( He gives you credits if you attend class faithfully and extra bonus assignments to boost up your grade. He is a really nice professor, though not the easiest. Highly recommended.
Mr. Sacks is an excellent, genuinely helpful professor who cares! He was very helpful in answering my questions for the essay and he was very clear and knowledgeable when anyone in the class had questions about grammar. The material is boring but he makes it interesting. Also really witty. His T.A is really nice and understanding.
Prof. Sacks knows what he's talking about. From what I can gather, he's a well respected journalist and has written several books (bits of which seemed to have popped up in class from time to time, making it a lot more interesting). He has a great sense of humor and sharp wit. He isn't the easiest Professor out there but you can earn a good grade.
David Sacks is an amazing professor. He is really funny. He is straight to the point and if you follow his advise you should have an A. David Sacks addresses everyone with respect and he is super helpful. He makes sure you're queries and questions are fully addressed. Love this prof :) . The way he says "stop talking" is really funny :P
Best prof I had first semester! Great guy who genuinely cares about his students and their success. Outlines exactly what he wants on the term paper and gives good feedback. Even though the lectures and DGD's are mandatory they're not boring considering it was a first year english class. Would recommend his class!
He sends repeated reminders so you dont slack and his teaching is super stimulating. He is funny and you enjoy his class for the material and the way he delivers it. Exceptionally sarcastic at times. He is the real nigga. I highly recommend him for this class. "I hate the idea that u guys are having fun. Stop talking, this is school" lol Love him.
David Sacks is one of my favorite profs at UOttawa. He is aware that business students are not english majors and grades accordingly. Mr,Sacks is knowledgeable, wants students to succeed and understand the material. The material in this course it not difficult, and is made even easier with Mr, Sacks's help. His expectations are more than fair.
ENG1131 was my most favourite course all year. Great class; great prof. There are a lot of writinggrammar tests for you to improve your mark that are not hard at all. You will have multiple TAs throughout the semester. Some marks harder than others, but at the end of the semester you can do make-up tests. The report was a pain in the butt though.
David Sacks will know you by your name in a class of 200. He's got this awesome personality. He will teach you important things that will always help you. He's super awesome, funny and a great human being. Genuinely cares about his students and will make sure you're doing good. You'd be lucky if you're in his class. By Syed
He is a good prof. He explains things well and he posts lecture notes on Blackboard. However, there is a LOT of reading material that comes with this course. My suggestion: take it during the summer if you want to be up to speed with all of the reading. He explains things well in class but the readings are also important.
Hands down, my favorite class of first year. This was the first course where I felt like the Prof actually cared about his students. Funny, entertaining, and informative lectures, and in terms of grades you get what you work for. He is very specific with his grading criteria, and you'll know what you need to get your A. would deff take again.
BEST PROF YOU WILL EVER HAVE! I recommend anyone to take his class if you can. He really cares about the students and his lectures are engaging. He makes the class fun and really tries to learn everyones names. He is a great guy and amazing prof!!!!
The first English class I ever had where we actually learned about the language and not just essays. Typically, grammar lessons are brutal but he focuses on the most relevant lessons and his lectures are really entertaining. I looked forward to his well-structured classes. He replies to emails quickly and he is really flexible to help students!
He has a really good sense of humour and makes lectures and dgd's interesting. He's also always willing to help students with any questions of difficulties and he was much appreciated for it. It's definitely a class that i'll miss
Super nice and helpful, made class enjoyable with his weird sense of humour. Gives very good feedback on essays and quizzes and gives optional makeup quizzes at the end of the course. Definitely a great prof
Dr Sacks was a great prof, his lectures made a lot of sense, he gives online lecture notes and so long as you know your stuff you'll do fine.
David Sacks was an odd prof. His lectures were EXTREMELY dry and boring. DGD classes consisted of quizzes, which in total, were worth more than the final term paper. Really focuses on his grammar lessons, for every grammar error wrong in essays he can take away up to 1 point. Attendance was mandatory for marks. Boring content, boring teaching.
I liked him a lot. He is a funny guy, and makes the boring subject matter bearable. However, attendance is mandatory, and the final report was graded strictly. The grammar and writing tests in the DGD were good for easy marks, so make sure to study for those.
He has a good sense of the class's attitudes and easily adjusts the lectures to fit with the class. He respects those who respects him so beware not to cross him. However, he will provide extra help and review marks. Make sure to follow closely to the instructions on the midterm !
He's very clear on everything you need to do for the actual class. He can be a little awkward at times, but he really is a good prof. You might not enjoy the class per say, but you will get through it very easily. Just show up and do your work and he'll be your best friend.
Lecture and DGD are mandatory and homework is given every class, lots of quizzes. YOU MUST TO THE READINGS. Tough marker for the most part, and doesn't have final essays marked until AFTER the final. If you can take this class with a different prof.
Attendance is mandatory. There are 3 grammar quiz and 3 writing test which are not too hard. The final is similar to the tests. I did learn a lot in this class though!
Not a fan of his style of teaching. Very unclear, all over the place with no powerpoint and use of the blackboard only to write in tiny letters. His test are oddly set up and it is very language based for a Greek myth class. Nice guy but would not recommend for this course given his language focus and minimal use of technology. Friendly nonetheless
I took this class for an "easy credit". As much as his class was "easy", I did have to put a lot of time into reading the textbook to fully grasp the content. Here's a tip: if you can't memorize all of the various myths while reading the textbook, YouTube does a fantastic job at summarizing the stories. All around interesting class. Had a blast!
Really loved the prof and his teaching style. You need to read, but you can get by with mostly just the lectures, tests provide different types of questions for the same material giving many opportunities to demonstrate knowledge! The course material is super interesting, make sure to remember dates the best you can. Highly recommended
I actually love this class so much, it was cancelled once and I was sad about it. He seems to know everything about what he's teaching and I never doze off during his lectures.
Excellent professor, his lectures are interesting and easy to understand. Tests are a little tougher than you might expect for what is considered an easy elective class, however you are give all sorts of options to choose from in terms of questions, so it's very fair. This class was very enjoyable.
A very dedicated prof that clearly loves the content, which makes his lectures very enjoyable. Loves this students and is always excited to see them engaged and interested. Doesn't use PowerPoint, but his lectures are clear enough that they're very easy to follow anyways. Would definitely recommend
When he tells you to be quiet, you should be quiet.
Prof Sacks is a pretty quirky guy. I found his lecture's pretty charming and he clearly knows a lot about Greek mythology. His exams+tests/quizzes have so many options in terms of questions that you're bound to know how to answer some. Got a 96 on the midterm by only studying the night before. I recommend his class if you're really good with memory
Passionate prof! His class was interesting and enjoyed taking it as an elective. There was one test, one midterm, one map quiz, and a final. He is very slow at getting the tests and exams back though. It is a memory based class. Lots of choices for questions on exams.
Prof. Sacks was great in CLA/HIS 2101, we was funny and interesting. Not too many readings, in-class material is not very heavy either. His evaluation method for the midterms and final is great, it makes it easy to do well in his course. Highly recommend.
He makes Essay Writting as fun as it can be, really nice professor.
He is not the best with lectures because he is sometimes disorganized or goes on a tangent. However, he's nice and his tests are super easy and fair. He allows you to choose which questions you want to answer. Very interesting class. Textbook not necessary if you take really good notes but will help boost your grade so I still used it. Easy A.
Sacks is a decent lecturer, but he does not like laptops or electronics in general. Do not bring them to class. Very picky with grammar. He took attendance every class and removes marks is you're not there. He responds quickly to emails and in general is very understanding. Not a bad prof, but he does eat the chalk (I'm serious, he does.)
Classic lecturer. The material is really easy and interesting. All his midterms and the final was pick which short/long answers to do out of a larger bank. It's easier if u pay attention in class but if u read the textbook and study from that should be fine
This is one of the best classes I've taken at this school. Professor Sacks gives exciting lectures and cracks jokes every now and again. There are two midterm exams, a map quiz (easy), and a final, none of which were too strenuous. Just study your lecture notes, flesh them out with the textbook and you will be fine.
He is a very tough and unfair grader. His lectures are unorganized. He does not allow laptops in his class. He takes attendance every lecture by calling every students name which takes forever. However, the level of difficulty is very low.
I dreaded taking this english class however it was mandatory so I had to. David Sacks made grammar and formal business writing bearable. He's a funny guy and I would definitely recommend taking his class.
Prof Sacks was great. I think some people seem to forget they're in an English class when they complain about him being picky with grammar. Given the dry course material, he conveyed the subject matter really effectively. He managed to remember names and faces in a class with 125+ students. Overall a great guy and a great course if you work for it.
first of all, the course content isnt meant to be hard. BUT, the TAs were very hard markers and that made it hard to get a good grade in this class. Very picky and the report was graded harshly. Prof Sack is nice though, TAs were much harder markers than he.
Extremely interesting professor who gives interesting lectures which are easy to follow. Will help with any questions a student has, and does his best to do so.
Prof Sacks is really caring and wants to see students do well. He tells jokes in class to help you pay attention and is really good at explaining the concepts. His grading is really clear and you can easily bring up your grade because there's tests, quizzes, a paper, and the exam. He takes attendance in class so don't miss it.
My favourite professor so far! If you stay on top of the very minimal work he gives you will get an easy A. He gives great feedback on tests etc. He also makes sure everyone is aware of what will be on tests and exams and he is very clear when it comes to all his lectures. Come to class because it is mandatory and if you dont you won't pass.
Prof Sacks was very kind, helpful and diligent all semester. His lectures were very straightforward and easy to follow along. His expectations were clearly outlined for every assessment and he was always available for help. However, attendance was taken every lecture.
Took as an elective, great prof, good lecturer, cracks some jokes. Pretty easy tests and exams, as long as you show up and do the readings (which aren't very long). No papers to write, just written exams and he usually gives you the choice between multiple questions. He sets you up to learn and do well in his class.
The content he teaches can be conveyed in a hour but he takes 2 and half hours to explain just because he goes off topic. he posts the lecture notes and at first theyre very detailed so people that didnt show up to class can understand. After second midterm period (we dont have another midterm) they become more vague. midterm, a map quiz, and final
Good, clear, structured lectures. The tests are easy. No surprises, just the stuff he's taught in class.
Genuinely a nice guy and pleasant prof. Do your homework, read the textbook, and go to class and you'll be golden.
Great prof, although his grading is questionable. He will grade for stuff that he did not mention you had to use, but all good
As a lover of Greek Myth, I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Professor Sacks was quite knowledgeable about the content and made everything easy to follow. His tests are very fair as he allows you to pick your questions from a bank. His occasional humour in relation to the Greek Gods made a 3 hour class quite engaging and tolerable. 100% Recommend.
David Sacks is a great professor. For a slightly dull class, he makes his classes seem fun. He cracks lots of jokes so it keeps us engaged in lectures. His midterms and grammar quizzes are extremely easy and if you review the material, you're good for an A. He is very lenient on exams too. I asked for extra marks and he gave them to me.
David Sacks is an amazing professor. He is very caring. He conveys the curriculum to you in a very clear and understanding manner. The tests and quizzes are made up of everything you learned in class, no surprises. The Ta's are not the best of graders, so if you are not satisfied, ask the professor for a regrade. Greatly recommended for ENG1131.
One of the kindest and most passionate professors. Accessible outside of class and has a mastery of the subject he is teaching. Learnt a lot more than I thought I would. Very enjoyable experience, highly recommend. Likely a bit more difficult than the other sessions (watch out for certain TAs)
This prof is awesome! Definitely would take a course with him again! However he does take quite a while to grade and never actually gave anything back until after the drop date for the course (though this was during the summer session).
I ended up taking this class because I needed to fill a slot in my schedule, and wasn't really expecting to like it. Instead, Sacks turned out to be a fantastic prof who made subject matter I normally wouldn't be interested in utterly fascinating. Sacks is hilarious, marking is straightforward, and the class was easy and fun. Highly recommended!
Great prof, his lectures are very interesting and he really knows what he is talking about. He occasionally makes funny jokes regarding the content which is nice. His grading is fair and he makes it very clear what you need to know for the midterm or paper/map quiz, he will even tell you exactly which table or diagram you will be tested on.
Loved him for Greek Myth! He is so knowledgable in ancient Greek history so it wasn't difficult to listen. Didn't use the textbook very much but could be useful if I didn't understand something he mentioned in class. He is a bit disorganized but that's part of his charm, he gets sidetracked because he's so passionate! Highly recommend this course
While attendance isn't marked, it is really important, but he makes the lectures son interesting you won't want to miss. He's funny and kind, and seems to really care about the material he teaches and conveys. His tests are very clear and easy to study for, as he gives plenty of resources to use to study and to help know what to expect. Great prof!
Hes a really cool teacher, and he makes jokes and is really interested in the topic so it makes it fun to watch. Theres a lot of reading, and the TAs mark the tests so you have to make sure you include EVERYTHING you know or they will doc points. Everything we cover in class is in the textbook and readings he posts online.
Funny guy, go to all his lectures and you'll get an A. There is only one midterm, a map quiz and a final.
This guy is classic.
David sacks is overall my favourite. He's extremely enthusiastic and seems like he really enjoys his job. He accommodates for students and such. As well as I appreciate that talks all class instead of referring to slides, I feel like I learn more due to the fact I have to pay attention. But overall the class testing is difficult.
David has amazing lectures and is one of my favourite profs. If you follow the midterm exam handout you'll be fine. Gives out a lot of readings that are necessary to do well. He has a clear grading system and tells students what he is looking for. I would take the course again just to have him as my prof. The guy is hilarious
Interesting class, textbook is helpful, go to class
Amazing Professor, every lecture just feels like you're watching a good documentary. If you show up and actually listen in the lectures you are guaranteed a good mark. midterm and final are pretty easy.
His lectures are soo interesting . 1 midterm, map quiz and final. I finished with an A+ by studying the lecture notes he posted on brightspace (rather than my on notes). His answer keys are word for word from the notes he post. Everything you need to ace the course is in those notes (the only part of the textbook I looked over was the glossary)
Super great prof. Unnecessarily test heavy compared to other sections, but fairly easy to do well on these if you read the textbook and follow the instructions in class. This class will be your grade booster, but you do need to put in some effort. Also, the 19% assignment is individual in his section but it is a group project in other sections.
Took Prof. Sacks' CLA 2102 (History of Athens, Sparta and Persia) as an elective, and I am so happy I did. I throughly enjoyed his lectures and the topics discussed. I was a little nervous taking a history course as a science student (worried about remembering dates etc), but his exams are extremely fair and offer choice.
I took this class as an elective and I loved it. Amazing and interesting lectures, the criteria to study on the midterm and exam was super clear and it was easy to prepare. I would very much recommend this course to those who enjoy a little history.
Great teacher and most of the classes he teaches have easy and interesting content. Midterms/exams are essay based but you can choose which questions you answer. If you go to class and take notes it's an easy A+ (he also posts all notes).
Greek Myth with Prof Sacks was absolutely amazing. He gave a lot of readings but they weren't always mandatory as he always covered the topics in class. Only grades were on the midterm, a small test and the final exam but he gave lots of study material to prepare. Lectures were fun and interesting, definitely one of the best profs at uOttawa!
Best prof I've ever had. I showed up at his lectures simply because it would make me smile. Attendance is not mandatory however, if you do the readings, show up to class and study off the notes he posts online, you are guaranteed to get a great grade. I'm in my first year and still took the second-year course. Best class I've ever taken.
I am not one for English; however, this class was very pleasant. He is very organised and clear of what he expects on assessments. Very easy to access him outside of class, and is very helpful. Definitely would recommend him, especially if you don't like English.
Sacks has awesome lectures that aid in explaining the content of his weekly quizzes. He is able to crunch explanations of grammar into methods that make sense, and are easy to understand. However, I would say that there is very little essay prep, which may make it hard for students who don't already have strong writing skills.
Great prof! Very fair, understanding, and clear in his expectations. Gives great feedback and is always willing to take a second look at your work if you feel it wasn't graded correctly. Gave a good review of basic grammar; however, beware that every grammar mistake in essays and quizzes is a mark lost. Overall, a great choice for ENG 1100!
His exams are amazingly well made and tailored for students. He loves the subject and he's the biggest nerd ever. He'll explain whatever you don't understand. His lectures are complex but very clear and useful. Not many PowerPoints, he draws and talks more. 10/10 would do again.
I took this class because I heard it was easy but it wasn't. Despite studying very hard for the midterm and final I found them both very challenging as Sacks wants you to remember minuscule details such as dates of paintings or its creator. We had to write 3 essays in 2 hours for the final. I don't recommend this course if you want an easy A :(
Fantastic content and great presentation, even online. Two tests and a few practice questions worth 1 or 2 % each. Tests are all essay format and if you don't come prepared you can get into trouble. the questions were never what i thought they would be. definitely worth it especially if you aren't familiar with that time period.
David Sacks is awesome. It wasn't the typical 'easy A', there is a ton of content and you have to put in work, but if you go to class, you will do well. I bought the textbook and wish I hadn't- the slide and lecture content was sufficient for the midterm/exam. One midterm, one exam, and a couple participation things.
Ok, tests only have long answer questions for a first year course. Pretty brutal especially considering other CLA courses.
I really enjoyed this class and this prof. Something that prospective students should realise is that this is not a free course. If you put the work in you should do well. There are quite a few readings, the text has a lot of them but some are posted on brightspace. Sacks likes to use roughly the 40/60 midterm/final formula.
so I took this class because everyone kept on saying it was an easy A. There was one midterm and a couple of quizzes which almost everyone did pretty good on and then on the final exam literally almost everyone had a terrible grade. Do I recommend this class for others? absolutely NOT. please don't waste your time and heartbreak on this course.
Disclaimer: I dropped this course after I got a 55% on the midterm. Super disorganized class, awful textbook, heavy workload, and unclear marking criteria. I read some great reviews so I'm very disappointed in Sacks and his class.
CLA 1101 was extremely unorganized online. Grading took forever - many weeks after the exam or quiz was taken. Grading was also too harsh. The professor himself is a likeable and nice person, I enjoyed the lectures. I don't doubt CLA 1101 being a good course in person, but online it's too unorganized and stressful. Take it in person, not online.
He is a great teacher and person and I love his lectures, but his grading was extremely tough. Failed nearly half the class on the midterm. Gave terrible grades to the other half. I have an 85-95 average in all my other classes and I got 38 on the midterm. NOT A BIRD CLASS. DO NOT TAKE TO RAISE GPA. Take it if you are passionate about greek history
I really liked this class! Lectures were interesting and the prof really loves the material. Doing well is definitely possible with some work. One midterm (37%), 4 participation activities (6%) and a final. Study guides + the syllabus topics are helpful for organizing your studying, make sure you know dates and events from the lectures.
I am a hard worker and only managed to get a B in this class and thats only after he raised the midterm grade by 20% because a big portion of the class was failing. This class is going as S/A on my report card and will remain one of my biggest regrets in uni.
Amazing professor, he really cares about what he is teaching and is knowledgeable in it. The midterm was a two short questions where you got to pick out of a group of questions.
His midterms are really hard. You have to be so specific for date and location and use SPECIFIC words or you won't get any points. His tests seem like he's setting you up to fail! Bare readings like non stop ! please don't take this class unless you have to because its not an easy "A"
Bird course as long as you attend lecture and do the textbook readings. The readings themselves are not complex and usually very light. In terms of grading it was a midterm and final where you would pick 3 questions from a group of 10+.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF unless you want your school average to suffer. This prof is the hardest marker in all of the social science courses. He will not let you have a good grade. I thought he would be fair, but not at all. Run ! DO NOT TAKE IT WITH THIS PROF, HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DON'T.
Professor Sacks is a kind man, however his midterm and final appear to be far too long and detailed. Indeed, you have to be well aware of all the dates and paintings etc. Also the grading scheme is far too strict I find. If you think you're going to get a grade you want with this prof, think again. He's a very very hard marker. Beware.
I enjoyed the lectures but the exams were hard because the prof wants details. No matter how much detail I gave I still barely made it. I would not take the class again He gives great elctures though
The most unfair prof at the university. No matter how much detail your put in, he won't even consider it if it's not exactly what he would put. If you want a good grade, don't take this prof. Pick someone else. This is the biggest mistake I made picking this prof as the course itself is quite simple, it's sacks who's a tough grader! Don't take him!
Professor Sacks really knows his stuff. Very happy to answer questions, and has good slides. Interesting content, BUT you had better get ready to read. Hundreds of pages. No textbook, and you fail. But it's fair. He tells you what you need to know, so it's up to you to work your butt off and do it.
Great lecturer who provides straightforward notes. Textbook wasn't really used other then to go more in depth to topics covered in class. Only 2 marked assessments throughout the year, but they if you attend class and study the notes you'll be fine.
He's a knowledgeable guy with a nice NewYorker accent, good lecturer although he talks kind of slow.
extremely kind professor, actually cares about his lectures (which is rare at uottawa)
He is a kind professor and is very knowledgable. I enjoyed the lecture and the class material was interesting. The only problem I had during this class was how unfairly the exams were marked. They were really long and we did not have enough time to finish. The unnecessary amount of readings also caused a hindrance in my day-to-day productivity.
I made the biggest mistake taking this class as an elective. He makes the class harder than it needs to be. SOOO many readings, it was brutal. The exams are way too long and the time is limited. He expected so much details for the final and only gave us 2 hours. The answers are marked so unfairly and marks are docked for the dumbest reasons. UGH!!!
For a class that people take as an elective, this was way harder than it should have been. The exams were really long and difficult and the way they were graded made no sense. Marks were taken off for the silliest reasons that didn't even pertain to the lectures. There were way too many readings; I gave up eventually. Please save yourselves!
I like him as a person since he is very kind, but he is lacking the skills to be a professor. His exams are very unfair in my opinion. He was very rude to me during the lecture as well. Overall, not satisfied with his teaching.
Kind professor, very knowledgable and intellectual. Exams were too long in my opinion with limited amount of time.
Professor Sacks is very passionate about the content he teaches, he always shows enthusiasm and answers all questions. He's the best prof I've had so far. Learned a great deal in this class and I definitely recommend taking it!
This class was so frustrating, because it's so content-heavy, with so many readings and 2 hour or longer lectures twice a week. The exam questions are very specific. He made us study most of the textbook, which is arduous to read, but ended up not putting any questions pertaining to some of the chapters. The midterm was 40% and the final was 60%.
really difficult grader be aware
very hard marker and not good at asking questions. I would not personally recommend it. Not good at online classes. if you don't already know the subject you will fail.
He is a kind man but the way he grades things is honestly the HARDEST I have ever seen in my 4 years at the university. There is absolutely no way to boost your grade as there is two tests, a midterm and a final. The questions are WAY too specific and difficult for a closed book exam. Do not take this as an elective.
Essay questions for exams; answer 2 on midterm, 3 on final. Took 2323 and 2102 with him b4 and learned that u should def write as much as u can for the exam questions. More readings than my upper year courses. If u don't like reading, u may be able to get away with not doing them all by relying on good&detailed notes and reviewing them.
This is one of those courses where you know the content but when it comes to the midterm and the exam, you are like "what did I just witness...." A midterm worth 40% and an exam worth 60%, which both are questioned in a VERY detailed manner. When I say very... VERY. Overall a nice guy but as a professor, not a good one.
Great professor and a really nice guy. He is always willing to answer questions and if he can't answer it, he writes it down for future classes. 40% midterm and 60% final is rough, especially with essay questions but the content is easy. The textbook is necessary but only as a study tool for tests. No need to keep up with it for the whole semester.
Nice prof, you can see he loves what he teaches (even if it does sometimes make his lectures feel a bit disorganized and hard to follow at times). Pay attention, take good notes and read the textbook (a brief history of ancient Greece in my case, got it used off amazon for a good price).
10/10
This Guy is Unbelievable. He doesn't teach, rather he reads of his slides and goes way to fast. impossible to write everything down.
This Prof sucks, he is the most monotone person I have ever heard in my life. His lectures are him reading off the slides and super speed, giving you no time to write notes. My friend and I were literally copying and pasting the slides and he was still to fast for us. super nice guy but holy he needs to work on his lecture style.
difficult grader. Do not take the greek civ expecting it to be a bird class. IT IS NOT. However, a very interesting course and he is a good professor one of the better ones.
2 exams and 2 quizzes. Quizzes done from home MC questions about 10 questions each worth 5% each. Midterm all written answers (8 short answers about 4 sentences each), (2 long answers about 4 paragraphs each) difficult worth 38%. The Final is the same as the midterm but instead of 8 and 2 its 16 and 4. Very difficult.
Really nice professor but 2 exams and 2 quizzes are crazy. His last exam was worth 53% of my grade and the midterm was worth 37. Lenient on the dates but overall, the course is heavy. Make sure to read ALL of the readings he provides, although the textbook was quite unneeded. Very nice though and a sweet teacher just needs to change his testing.
i recommend just listening to the prof's storytelling in lectures. go back and review the slides & readings before exams. it'll help you remember more than spending lecture time copying down every word he says. he gives you big question banks on his exams and you choose which ones to answer. its not a hard class once you figure out how it works
Professor Sacks is clearly passionate in the lecture content and goes on the great lengths to discuss key concepts like political reforms. The textbook is required but is there to only provide detail and commentary on the main events. All in all, an affable, humorous professor and an exhilarating course about the rise and fall of Ancient Greece.
Literally the most average prof but I enjoyed the class. Reads off the slides word for word, had to watch his lectures in 2x speed. Really enjoys what he teaches, that definitely makes any class better. Two 5% quizzes, extremely unfair- do not fall behind on lectures and stay on top of content to do well on the evaluations. Is pretty polite.
His lectures are all over the place; we would talk about something without having any context but then go back weeks later and talk about it again. So random and hard to follow along with the content. Not an easy pass unless you already know a lot about greek myth. Was excited but now disappointed about this class :(
Sacks is extremely content heavy with this course. I missed some lectures and so the class was quite difficult. There are a large amount of readings that are essential to understanding the content at all. You will need to remember very specific details of basically 1000 years of mythology and be able to write multiple pages during the exam.
Very content heavy, and definitely not a bird course. Read the lectures beforehand and only listen during class and highlight important concepts to really get the ideas ingrained in your brain. It'll help you more than taking long notes during class and everything is on the slides already. Check the weekly readings as well!
Professor Sacks is the make-or-break of the course. I don't think I would've continued in Greek civ if it weren't for him. There is an insane amount of really boring reading, it's a lot of work for an elective. I wouldn't take this course unless absolutely necessary. Not worth the stress. Final exam was worth 53% of grade. Great Prof though.
Professor Sacks and this class are made for each other. I can't think of anyone better suited to teach Greek Civ. Lots of reading and the textbook is a must if you want to do well. If you just want an easy bird course, this is not it.
Professor Sacks is an overall horrible prof. His grading schemes are super narrow meaning if you make a minor mistake it may cost you the whole assignment. Also, he decided that in a business english class he should give us a formal report topic which is straight out of a politics class. He is obsessed with Justin Trudeau.
Reads off his slides at max speed? Not true, he only fills the slides to make it easier to study and takes his time. Super passionate and nice prof who gives amazing lectures in history courses especially Greek civ and myth. Hard grader? It's usually the TAs, be mad at them. Hard class but by far my favourite prof. (I've taken 3 of his classes)
My fav prof. Classes are content heavy but as long as you're well informed on a few subjects and at least aware of the others you should be fine during tests and exams (you can choose which questions to answer). All classes are recorded and all info is on the slides for easier study. Always ready to answer any questions and review grades (from TAs)
He isn't a bad professor, but he is more passionate about his subject than teaching. He reads off his slides which are just paragraphs of writing per page. Doesn't explain must rather just copies his slides. I learnt more by taking my notes asynchronously as he would teach way too fast in class. Not an easy class for the easy elective most seek.
Really nice guy, and super reasonable. He is an interesting teacher, although be aware he assigns a lot of readings.
You can tell by the lectures that this prof loves what he does. Beware, this class is a lot of reading, but the content is surprisingly worth it. Records lectures, slides are nicely detailed, but there are a lot of readings (can still get away with just reviewing lecture slides). Gives a good outline of what to expect on tests. Def would take again
David Sacks is a great professor. You can tell he enjoys his work. The lectures can be a bit slow some days but overall I believe how he teaches the class almost like he was just telling this huge story make it very entertaining. He also was very expressive while teaching. The content is a lot and you're graded on only a few tests. still worth it.
I'm a STEM student taking this class as an elective. IMO u can get away w/ a good mark by making notes based off the lecture slides (I only referenced extra reading when I wanted more depth). Don't need to memorize everything cuz he gives good variety of q's on his tests. You'll be surprised how much u can pull out of ur brain for the tests!!
Professor Sacks is probably my favorite prof so far, you can tell he is really passionate about his work. He is able to give us good explanations along with the slides he gives us and not only reads them. Only thing is that the midterm and exams require a lot of writing and critical thinking, not multiple choice answers.
A great professor, his exams and tests are not that hard but he is passionate about what he is teaching and you will def remember somethings from the material after his courses. But it is important to also study and do the readings and understand the concepts from the courses and read the exams carefully.
Prof. Sacks is a good and passionate lecturer. However, I really disliked his class. He canceled often and recorded lectures were worse in quality. His tests are so frustrating. Rather than being marked on comprehension, you're simply marked by the TA'S on how many key words you can cram into a paragraph. I won't be taking his classes again.
Dr. Sacks is a very enthusiastic professor albeit very slow in talking, so watching his lectures in 2x speed was necessary for me. He explains the content well but you do need to do all the readings he provides to do well on his exams, which are only short/long answer questions. Grading is quite strict and not many people do well in the class b/c.
Prof. Sacks did an overall good job at teaching this course as well as providing recorded lectures in the case you missed the class. This course has a ton of material to read and to achieve a good grade you're expected to memorize names of key people as well as dates. However, he allows you to pick exam questions from a long list making it easier.
LOVED this class and professor. Tests and quizzes are super easy, just show up and read along in the textbook and everything is straight forward. There's one paper which was easy and a bunch of tests and quizzes although make sure to study format because a lot of marks can be taken off. The exam was long but easy and it covered the whole course.
easy & low maintenance. dont recommend watching the lectures, as he just reads off the slides. review the study assignments he gives and youre fine. exams are not hard - he gives a big variety of topics to write about, so just familiarize yourself with major events and youll do well. doesnt take marks off for writing more than the limit
Although he and his texting style seems imitating, the class was great overall. He is an easy grader and has a good sense of humour (you actually laugh at his jokes instead of fake laughing lol). The only thing I really struggled with in this course were the two online quizzes - he doesn't give enough time!
If I'm being honest, I only attended this class one time and it was the first of the semester. However, Prof Sacks is very clear and very fair with tests. Read the lectures, gain an overview of topics and pay attention to the chapters he says is important and you will do good. Also provides a ton of extra documents for reading which are helpful
This class made me hate greek civ. He only reads off the powerpoint and has these pregnant pauses constantly.
Excellent communication and clear expectations and requirements for every quiz and assignment, both in class and in Brightspace announcements. Instutions are precise. Class contains lots of graded parts, but if you attend DGD's (which are mandatory) and lectures you will do very well with barely any studying.
He was not a bad professor but he was boring, he just read off the board most of the time. I didn't mind his class because it wasn't utterly challenging but you definitely need to read and STUDY!!!
class is not mandatory. all slideshows are posted on brightspace focus on major events and you will do well
He mainly read off of his slideshows so attending the lectures is not that important. Overall he is a very nice guy who will do what he can to help you succeed if you reach out. He is very enthusiastic during his lectures so you never get tired. His grading criteria is very fair and easy if you understand the material. Grades on main concepts.
Mr. Sacks is one of the few professors left at uOttawa that is visibly passionate about what he teaches. He is incredibly friendly and clearly appreciates his students. Whilst I wouldn't consider this class an easy A, if you go to class and review the readings before the exams, you'll do fine.
I have taken two courses taught by him now and have no complaints. His lectures are clear and concise and he posts them on bright space. as long as you are taking notes and paying attention you'll get a solid grade. If Ancient Greek history interests you at all I highly recommend taking his greek civ course or the 2102 course.
I had a medical emergency on the final exam, so I got a bad grade, but the professor still gave me a passing grade. A professor who actually taught for the sake of passing on knowledge, not to intentionally make things difficult for students.
Lots of textbook reading involved, but the slides he covers in class could do the job alone. Lectures were very engaging and he has a lot of enthusiasm for the subject. Everything was pretty interesting and the exams and quizzes were pretty easy. He was very clear about exam content and made our lives pretty easy.
An absolutely awesome lecturer that clearly has a lot of passion for what he is teaching about. I found it really fun to show up to his classes even if they weren't all required given the nature of his exams which give you a wide breadth of choice.
He always posts his lectures on Brightspace! The Textbook for this class was also available online, so you don't have to pay for it. His lectures follow his slideshows pretty much word-for-word so if you miss a class don't worry. There are several PDFs you have to read, but they're pretty short. The quizzes on Brightspace are easy!
Great professor. There was a textbook for the course, but in hindsight, it wasn't entirely necessary. Great lecturer, very entertaining; provided recordings of lectures which is a big plus. No essays, only two quizzes and exams. The exams were easy but depend on your ability to retain and recall what was covered in the lectures.
Great Prof and v passionate. He records his lectures & although there is a textbook, i didn't use it for the exam material and still got an A+. for his exams he gives you a pool of questions and you can pick which to answer, so you don't rlly need to know everything. downside is the exam is worth 50% so study ur hardest at the end
One of the most passionate professors at the university. I'd recommend going over his slides and finding Greek words in bold and knowing their translation to English and how they apply to the course overall. He has a large bank of point for midterms where you would need to be uber precise as in other classes.
Prof Sacks represents the very best of Old School teaching. Incredibly engaging, respectful, intelligent, polite, he had us on the edge of our seat every class. You also get the impression he doesn't take BS and has high (but fair) expectations. I learned and grew so much more than I expected. Experience him while teachers like him still exist!
Profs a nice guy who you can tell is well versed in and enjoys the subjects he teaches. If you also enjoy the subject and find it easy to remember things the class should go well.
Very funny guy, and a good teacher
Prof Sacks is passionate and engaging, but the course load is heavy. I'd recommend using Unstuck AI and the textbook to supplement the lectures. Exams are manageable if you stay on top of the material.
Records the lessons so if you miss a class you can watch the video! The grading is very confusing (from the TAs)
Absolutely love this dude. Obviously very passionate and knows his stuff. Don't skip the textbook readings if you want to do well.
He was clearly very passionate about the topic which definitely made the lectures more interesting. Super easy to ask questions both throughout the class and after. He records the lectures so attendance is not mandatory although I recommend going. Textbook is important.
Prof Sacks is amazing!! He is so nice and funny, very passionate too. But beware there is a LOT to study in this course, so I'd recommend having a genuine passion for history. Otherwise no point because you won't be motivated to do all the readings and go to class. The content is easy to understand, there is just lots of it. :)
As a professor he is great I enjoyed his lectures. But be aware that you do have to be on top of your stuff and study as much as you can so you memorized everything. But the TAs were harsh markers which really ruined the course for me.
I love prof Sacks so much, I've taken every single one of his classes. I miss him already. Funny and engaging lecturer, clear expectations, easy enough as long as you put in your fair share of work. Plus the lectures are recorded so no stress if you're sick. I can't memorize dates to save my life and I still aced his classes
Be prepared to read a lot in this course. but him as a prof was great, you can tell he cares about student success. exam and midterms are super fair, you only really need to know your favourite topics since every examination you get to choose to answer a few out of all given questions. as long as you know roughly half the content you'll be great.
I had a great time in Dr Sacks class, such a caring guy. He gives you multiple question options to choose from on the exams, BUT BEWARE, whatever you pick you have to know IN AND OUT. lots of reading, all the important info was on the slides, he recorded all the lectures. Textbook was unnecessary imo, great prof all around though I wish him well
Extremely passionate and funny, I really enjoyed attending his lectures. Midterm was super fair (use the study assignment he gives). He has an old school style teaching that I am very grateful I got to experience. Best way to go about things is to study what interests you the most.
Nice guy. Idk about his grading but one of his TA's. OOF. Mainly read the slides so dont feel pressured to attend every lecture. Wouldnt say this class is hard but it's a LOT, I wouldnt recommend to take it as an easy elective. If u think it's gonna be like greek mythology or roman civilization you would be mistaken(as was I)it's my worst elective.
The professor was really great; however, I do not recommend this class as an optional course. There's so much lecture to do, and you need to know the subject in and out for the exam. There are 2 short quizzes; however, there are only 12 minutes to complete each, which, in my opinion, is not enough. Also, the TA's grading is confusing.
Took greek civ as an elective and that was the worst mistake I've ever made. The prof talks so slowly so it's really hard to stay focused in the class. He makes jokes from time to time regarding the class content and he's nice. But the lectures and the readings are really long. Each lectures have at least a 100 slides. Wouldn't recommend taking it.
Amazing prof.
The best professor at the university by far. All of his lectures recorded so attendance is not mandatory. He has a free textbook that he follows where he assigns readings, they are not necessary to pass the class but definitely help get a higher understanding of the topics. Exams are all written based on prompts and words and no multiple choice.
he's a nice guy and very amusing. the course is so content heavy and you could get lost in the material, so when doing assignments, just remember to only outline the most important events and details. LOVED that he recorded his lectures so i never went. but omg never take his classes as electives tho, this course did not bump up my avg
Absolutely wonderful professor!! Changed my whole university experience :)
Prof Sacks is a charismatic, silly guy. he engages with his students and is VERY passionate about Greek civilization. Sometimes he misses people when their hands are raised. (so you gotta like wave your hand around). The course is VERY content heavy. VERY. So warning. Definitely not an easy elective, unless you really love history. Needs textbook.
Professor Sacks is a great professor - he's very passionate and his enjoyment of the topics rubs off on his students. However, this class is SUPER heavy, unnecessarily so imo. Most people get fooled into taking it as an elective. so PLEASE do not take this class if you do not want/ don't have time to do a lot of reading and writing. Thank me later
David Sacks is a legend.
This is NOT an easy elective for those looking for one. I thought it was going to be easy.... i was wrong. I dropped the class cause the midterm was ridiculous. Do not be fooled by what other people say - this class is not an easy A.
The amount of effort you put into this class will reflect your results. David Sacks, at times, would read straight off his slides. Lectures are recorded. For the midterm and final, write down everything you know. Lots of reading and memorization.
Oh my god don't take this class expecting an easy A. In my opinion don't take it at all because no elective should require this much work. Regardless, Prof Sacks was an amazing prof, BUT PLEASE DON'T BE FOOLED LIKE SOME OF US WERE. (ur welcome I suffered for y'all. y'all need a real one like me and not the liars who were saying its an easy a).
Everybody saying this class is "heavy" or "not an easy A" is insanely wrong. The way the exams were set up was in such a way that you only needed to memorize roughly half of the lecture topics and answer some questions based on the prompts given. I only studied for a day before the midterm and got a grade of 100%. same is true for CLA 1101.
Odd guy but funny and cares about Greek civ. Has retired now so this is irrelevant but he's a cool dude. Tests are EASY (pick 1/6 and answer x3). A little strange at times, definitely seems a little out of it but thats part of his charm. 1 midterm, 1 exam, 2 easy quizzes throughout semester. Quizzes are free 12%
My king David Sacks is retiring, so everyone is out of luck after this year. This class was truly incredible. Went into it HATING history, and now I want to take more electives in ancient studies. Such silly and goofy lectures (especially the one about hoplite couples ifykyk). Prof Sacks clearly loves what he does and it transfers to his students.
all hail prof sacks
