DO NOT come to class late..he will recommend you take a 101 course in manners!
good but sometimes in a rush to leave class; otherwise uses media well
Boring, ugly, bad course material, YUCK
David is a really good teacher with a sense of humor. I enjoy his courses
I found this course pretty easy...Is this high school? Not a bad professor.
Decent lectures...I have no reason to dislike him, but I still do. Sorta looks like someone who could be Hitler's younger brother.
I really enjoyed his class. He has a good sense of humor and makes it interesting.
Very easy prof, as long as you go to class.
very clear and VERY organised -- good professor. Course material was interesting too.
His historical knowledge, especially of European history is immense. Consequently, the contrasts, comparisons and linkages of common themes he is able to present are always thought provoking and more often than not, surprising. His lecturing style incit
boring lectures but occasionally funny. but history is always boring. the tests are easy and he's a good teacher, but he's a total dick if you try to talk to him
great prof! presents material well and makes the course interesting. Easy quizzes and assignments, its almost impossible to get below 70

Stop whining to be spoon fed and start working. For Ireland After The Famine he is awesome as well as easy. Suprisingly knowledgible.
Just a mean guy.
Good teacher - attend lectures and pay attention and you will do well on the tests.
Schweitz is the best prof I've had in university. the man is amazing when it comes to tech. everything is online and very helpful. don't worry about buying the book, just go to class.
not helpful at all. tests are easy but history prof's are known for their kindness and amenity. surely disappointed. never gonna take history with this guy!
Very knowledgable, but a poor professor. His quizzes do not reflect the important portions of the course. He is unhelpful to students if you talk to him. If you attend class and don't need to ask him for help you should be fine.
Schweitzy, is a great prof. He does a good job of using technology such as the internet, and powerpoint presentations. Go to class and you can easily get an 85 or higher.
Awsome prof! His lectures are well organized and if you pay attention you will find yourself laughing quite a bit at his random jokes. Tests are easy if you go to class.
I have taken three classes with David Schweitzer, and have found that if you go to each class, read the textbook, and keep up with the work you are just fine! He is not a hard marker, so long as you can write a decent essay!
Very knowledgable and clear. The textbooks weren't all that necessary, just pay attention and take good notes. Often makes random jokes, and is sometimes sarcastic, which makes the class entertaining. Will definitly be taking more classes from this prof.
I've taken three courses with Schweitzer, and theres one simple rule you NEED to follow if you are going to suceed: don't bother him about things he's gone over in class; therefore go to class! - very decent marker if you do what he asks in assignments.
An obnoxious man. Rather rude and unhelpful.
It is very true that he is rude, unhelpful, etc... what you need to know is to just PAY ATTENTION. He keeps it clear, just do NOT bug him or kiss up. The class was amazing and interesting though. (NOTE: Now HIST 372)
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL terrible class I though it would be a bord class, WRONG, lectures are disjointed and impossible to study from, usless and swetizy is an arrogant jerk whome is completly unapproachable, avoid at all costs!
Rudest person I've ever come met in my entire life. SOOOO un helpful.. Not understanding at all. If you can avoid him at all costs DO IT.
The most UNHELPFUL prof I have EVER come across. He must have a heart of stone. I have never known anyone to be so miserable nor to be so rude. I would never recommend taking a class with him. EVER.
Great lecturer...Just don't bother him about stupid stuff or questions that are self explanatory..a very fair prof
I was so bored and didn't know a thing about history, thank god he marked easily.
I've taken numerous course offered with this prof. He is really good and I suggest everyone to take at least one of his courses. He uses various forms of media to help his power point presentations. The only thing that may suck are the discussions; he grades you according to relevance of point and t
brutally boring, 250 is all about stuff everyone already knows, he structures the lectures around specific people and dates, not really about the actually goings-on during the different periods. Discussions are OK, not exactly the most charismatic of profs. Doesn't lecture, reads his lecture notes.
Wow, history 250 was retarded. Didn't learn a single thing, he takes a bunch of peoples names and refers to one very vague thing that each person did. Covered marxist history in one slide, 4 points. Terrible powerpoint slides, useless course.
UGH! most awful class i have ever taken, the guy is plain and simple dick, no use for him and all his arrogance. lectures were boring and disjointed, discussions were pointless, thanks for wasting my time schweitzy.
This Prof. was one of the markers for my distance course. Not very understanding of the special needs of adult learners. Don't expect flexibility on due dates or compassion in general. The course was interesting but then again this Prof. wasn't lecturing.
This class made me consider suicide. Even if there wasn't an afterlife, I'd rather go there than to Schweitzer's class. I got an 82, and I can't name, offhand, a single thing I learned. Solid class for getting your life sucked out of you. Avoid like the plague.
This is a great class. If you have any 20th C history knowledge it is an easy A.I thought this prof was good. I took the course last year and I remember a book report(easy - on any history book of your choice)and MC tests(also easy). One of the best courses taken at UW(out of ~30).
I am very interested in European history - so overall I am enjoying the content of course - but I was very unhappy spending $300 on books for 1 course - considering it is a course on European history I think it would have been possible to find more budget friendly textbooks. Expectations for essay assignments aren't all that clear keep up with wor
A fair marker and a good lecturer, if you're actually interested in what he has to say. He's not flashy by any means but he covers all the basics and as long as you study those (along with the occasional obscure textbook point) you'll end up with a good mark. Surprisingly approachable outside of class too!
Terrible prof made me fall asleep all the time. Real stupid idiot wrote on my 3rd assignment where is your 3rd assignment? If he teaches your class get out before it's too late.
Avoid this Prof! Lectures are disjointed, and he focuses on the obscure rather than the important. Easy tests and essays, but each lecture is enough to kill you inside a thousand times.
If you want to watch a prof sit behind a desk and mumble take this class. If you have an interest in a subject, take this guy to see how quickly you can be bored to tears on something that you actually like. Now that's education!
Fair exams - if you study, you can do very well. Lectures - kind of dry. Essays - demanding. Overall - he's recommended.
Most boring class ever, but seriously, if you want to raise your averag, take a course with him. This guy is by far the easiest marker ever, averages are always 80+. Incredibly dull lecturer, but really, how interesting can you make historiography?
ok, the reason i fall asleep and/or leave halfway through his lectures are as follows: his lectures are dull, he is rude to people who can't understand his poor excuse of a class, and he says IN ESSENCE waaaay too much! i'm not joking, the last class i counted him saying IN ESSENCE a total of...get this...64 times!!! otherwise a fairly easy marker.
Schweitzey has his faults, for sure. He says "In Essence" much too much, and he can be a bit rude at times to students, he zips through his lectures so make sure you have the printout. He doesn't test on the readings. But he does know his stuff very well. I found his lectures very interesting and he is an easy marker for tests and the essay.
Schweitzer is an arse.
This guy is a very arrogant individual, not friendly, and self absorbed. He's also ****, and only says hi to the attractive girls in the class. He loves saying "In essence...", and lacks humour. That being said, his class is super easy, with simple tests. If you can get over his rude and crude exterior and can stay awake, you'll do very well.
Most useless class I've ever taken, bar none. All he did was throw the class names and dates without really explaining the relevance of any aspect of anything. I did well in this class. Ask me to teach you anything I learned in this class and I'd be at a loss for any word other than "uh ..." Like people have said: rude, obnoxious, unhelpful ...
WOW!!! WHAT AN ***HOLE!!!VERY ARRGOANT AND POINTLESS CLASS!! HES WAY OVERDUE AT UWATERLOO!! DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES!! I ONLY EVER DID BECAUSE THERE WAS NO CHOICE!!!
Terrible professor. I could learn more by reading a textbook. He makes no attempt to explain the relevence of anything, and simply rattles off dates, and quotes from people, without actually explaining why they are important or why they apply to what he's talking about.
Horrible, horrible professor. His lecture are just dates and one-sentence explanation of events, no actual information. Tests are extremely easy, just basic facts, but the exam was killer - he expected thorough essay answers in a class where everything was just dates. Wake up UW - THIS MAN SHOULD NOT BE TEACHING!
awesome prof! easy quizzes and the essay isnt too bad..easy marker
copy his notes from uw ace, fill in anything he says in a louder voice than usual and study only the things he's underlined for his quizess. if you have even a vague idea of history you'll pass this course. to do well, read bits of the text. he's nice, smart, willing to tell you what you need to know, but sometimes (okay always) boring.
Upon first impression you'd think he was a tech-shop teacher judging by the glasses. He is not a very good prof. He reads word for word off his power points (might not be a bad thing) and loves Scantron cards, marking essays half asleep and Enya. If he hates you, he won't give you good marks. At least he has a nice butt! Makes it worthwhile.
In Essence... he is very smart... but at the same time in essence he could make the class a little brighter with a lighter sense of humour. it is very dry.. but enjoyable at the same time i guess... his use of the UWAngel site is AMAZING
HAHA. Okay, you people are retarded. If Schweitzer didn't give you a good mark, it's because you're a dumb ****, so your opinion ought not to be valued much anyways :P. But seriously, if you can READ and follow instructions, you'll earn a decent mark. A disgrace to UW History? WTF mate? Oh okay, some dumb first year artsy fart said that. Nevermind.
Provides solid, reliable lectures every class. Tests are too easy. The paper seems like a good first-year challenge. He may not be glamorous but he is reliable, solid, and I am lacking that from all my other professors else this term. You know you're going to get your money's worth with Dr. Schweitzer
His lectures are boring.. but hey it's history... but follow the notes he posts on ACE and you'll be fine
IN ESSENSE he ESSENTIALLY teachers fairly well although it is quite boring. My strategy is not to take any notes at all but just focus on what he says. Then I copy and paste the notes from ACE onto my computer. When the quizzes role around I browse them and got an 86% on the first one no problem. IN ANY CASE hes not that bad just kinda boring.
EVERYTHING written by others I found true until I talked to him in his office. SO NICE! Answered all my Qs about the exam and gave me helpful hints! Lectures were boring only when the content was boring, when he got into WWI & II it was awesome. Obviously there is some dry material. Fair tests. Looks mean & arrogant but talk to him outside of class
Poor class. Didn't provide helpful feedback on assignments. I wanted help after class but he was was worse than useless. Impatient and unpleasant. Boring speaking style. Slides weren't enough. Very good text. Okay for an easy mark, but not if you want more.
From what I can gather he's improved a lot as a lecturer in the past few years. Clear powerpoint outlines which he elaborates on in great detail. He ties concepts together and fleshes them out well. I find the subject matter interesting. He's a very decent prof and I enjoy his classes.
HIST 200 is bar far the EASIEST course UW has. You can download all the movies and 50% of your mark is discussions on ACE. This prof is awesome for getting a super high mark with little effort. he can be boring and ramble, but his tests remind me of gradeschool. HIST 371 had 40% iclicker, a paper, and a final- cant get much easier than that folks.
He is a decent professor. He is very informative and tries to engage us students with jokes. His slides aren't too bad. Sometimes he lectures too fast and it is difficult to take notes. I love that 40% of our grade is clicker questions. Sometimes his voice is a bit monotonous. Overall, e is a very good professor, He obviously loves history.
He's funny but that's not really important since he won't talk much. bulk of the course is watching movies and online discussion which is pretty much useless. but you can get high marks if you follow the participation guidelines. the content doesn't have to be of good quality either..
If you have some interest in Western Civilization and usually attend classes take this course for breadth requirements. 40% Clicker questions, no midterms, one small (2500 w) assigned-topic essay, and a final. You have to attend class for the clicker ques though and if, like me, you find history boring it is near impossible to pay attention.
Disrespectful, boring, and inconsiderate. I didn't understand how to do the ONLY assignment and he didn't even give me information that would flat out not help me - he told me that he would refuse to answer my questions. Inappropriate for a professor.
Knows his stuff and can teach it very clearly. Not very interesting in his methods, so interest in the subject matter will make or break this class. Clicker questions and fairly easy MT and final made for an easier course.
Gets the facts across well, lectures are organized to be understandable. Does not like to be interrupted even for questions.
good prof. he can be a bit boring with his lectures at times but likes to show movies to change it up a bit. very organized lecture slides that he posts on ACE. the course is very easy: 30% clicker questions (VERY EASY) one essay on a short article and the final. my only complaint is he doesnt take questions during lecture
Dr. Schweitzer is an excellent professor. Attend all classes and get easy clicker question marks. One essay proposal and an essay with a final. He will help you if you ask for it, as long as your question isn't already answered somewhere on ACE/sylabus. Very interesting lectures and can make Irish History very interesting! Very nice guy as well.
An okay class. I wish there was more variety in the films shown. TA's do all the marking, so you have to communicate with them
Not the most lively or interesting, but he is very clear and the clicker question can give you easy marks. READ THE TEXT BOOK! In the lectures he usually goes in depth on a few points from the readings, but if you want an A, make sure you got some extra points from text to throw down on the essay question exam. Easy class if you listen and read.
Loved this class! Very easy if you read the textbook. Some films were a little boring but were appropriate for with the lectures. Very short lectures introducing film but learned a ton in them! Easy marker and easy to get a 85+ by just participating in the discussions and reading the text.
I took this class online and didn't like it at all. The movies were boring and you have to contribute to the discussions 3-5 different times a week or you get a low grade. These contributions can not be on the same day which makes it difficult for other school work. The prof seemed very rude when he was asked questions as well.. not helpful!!!!!!!!
Prof Schweitzer is completely arrogant, and not helpful what so ever. I took this class online and I had emailed him for clarification of certain assignments, along with many other students, and his responses were always rude and treated the question with such disrespect.
Its a good thing they don't do personality testing before they hire professors here. It would appear that he has no interest in students. He avoids questions. I'm not sure what thay means. He is rude and arogant but you can pass if you look at everything but his lectures.
Most boring prof ever, talks about basically nothingThought this course could be interesting but it was far from Not interested in the content mostly because of the way he presented it Only went to class for clicker questions and then watched tv or fell asleep Second course with him one online and one not DONT DO IT
Schweitzer was reluctant to help when approached several times when I had legitimate concerns over unfair evaluations and rude feedback from my TA. He did not help to my satisfaction. His class was largely a waste of time and money (iClicker2Textbook). I worked hard for my marks, but it turned out to severely lower my overall average for the term.
His instructions were very unclear for assignments and he seemed to have requirements that he did not tell the students about! He doesn't really answer questions and if he does he is very rude about you going to him directly and requests that you ask the TA next time...
The readings have nothing to do with the lecture. Only useful for 1 iclicker question each class. Would not take again
Incredibly rude professor. I emailed him a question about where to find certain research material (a question I would assume a history professor would love to help answer) and his response was extremely curt. It even seemed like he was trying to threaten or compromise my assignment because I had asked a question with apparently an 'obvious answer.'
I don't know why the History department continues to hire him as a sessional. He has a terrible attitude towards students and is way past retirement age. Would much rather have a younger, enthusiastic professor. Heard credible stories of him showing up drunk to school.
The class is not at all difficult, David Schweitzer's entire thing is to have a lot of super arbitrary and unnecessary rules and grading rubrics that don't actually have any bearing on whether or not you tried or learned the material, and he's entirely rude with queries related to it. Useless professor, might as well have an AI teach the course.
I began taking Professor Schweitzer's History classes in first year (2001) and continued to take them up until fourth year (2005). He is an old-style professor. Simply put, do what he says, how wants it (which is typical formatting and style for History papers) and you will do fine. Read his handouts on what he expects in assignments.
The course is very annoying because you need to keep post every day, but if you over-posted, your mark will be reduced. The comparative essay is sh*t. Your TA will describe your work as a piece of sh*t and list your mistakes as much as possible, then give you a incredibly low mark. Both professor and TA are rude. It impossible to remark.
He isn't helpful at all and his lectures are incredibly boring. Your grade depends on the TA you get since they mark all of your work. You better hope you don't get Cameron Winter because he takes is job way too seriously and grades harshly.
