I really don't like this professor. He has way too much information he wants to cover in a class period. Usually, we are always behind and he never covers all he wants to in class. To compensate, he talks really fast...
I took Dr. Seely for Teachings of Isaiah in 2000 or so. He knows his material and presents it intelligently and enthusiastically. It wasn't an easy course, but he taught the subject matter so well that I couldn't help but get excited about the subject too
This teacher was very knowledgable and made class fun and interesting. He is very helpful to the students and is available for questions whenever you need him. Plus I thought he was funny.
I really liked this class. I didn't know anything about the old testament and now I know plenty. I can see how this text really affected other scripture. Bro Seely is a fast-talking guy who always seems to be behind, but when test time rolls around, you will be fine as long as you took lots of notes
This class changed my life! Prof. Seely and his wife team taught and showed me how to view history, art, and literature in an entirely new manner. I grew spiritually in this class because the professors challenged my way of thinking. The class is difficult, but doing the reading and attending class will allow you to perform fine on the tests.
He was awesome. It is true that he speaks quickly and rushes sometimes to get through the material, but he teaches a lot and is very passionate about it. His Civilization classes taught me a lot in a very spiritual light. He is moderately hard, if you do the required reading and go to class you will have no problem.
bro seely and his wife team teach this class. they are very nice and try to get to know their students. for an honors class its not that hard. you have an essay about once a week. and there is alot of reading, but if you do the study guides the tests are managable. class lectures are alittle unorganized, but good.
Bro. Seely is passionate about the subject matter, knows a ton, and cares a lot about his students. This class is a lot of work, but I learned a ton, and Bro. Seely was very good about pushing back due dates when we were struggling to keep up. He talks really fast sometimes, but he's so excited and cute that you just have to love him.
An amazing professor. He is passionate about the subject matter and teaches it in a way to get the students excited about it too. Applies teachings in a very real and useful way. Care a lot about the students.
Professor Seely raised a fine son. His classes were good too.
Dr. Seely was one of the best professors I've ever had. Very passionate about his subject, and really loves his students. The readings are always relevant, and the study guides for the tests, though they sometimes take some time to do, help you learn more and do well on the tests at the same time.
He rambles to no end and at the end of class he kind of just tries to sum up everything that he missed! However when the tests come around he hands out an awesome study guide which tells you absolutely everything that you need to know on the test and alot of other things too! Not very easy tests, if you dont like going to class :D Overall well done
He's a really nice guy & always happy to help. But, he talks super fast & jumps around a lot. It's really hard to follow what he's talking about. He does give study guides before tests, but there's TONS of questions, & only 20 will be on the test. Also, I don't know where he gets the study guide questions cuz most aren't from lecture! He expects a
Amazing class! Highly recommended. Keeping up with all the reading is difficult, but it is worth it; it is interesting and makes you feel cultured. The Seelys team-teach the class and they are excellent. I learned a lot. You write a 2 page response paper every week or so and a theme journal in which you trace a theme throughout history. take i
This class is a LOT of work, but as long as you keep up with the readings you'll do well. The Seely's are really great people as well as excellent teachers (even if Brother Seely does talk really fast).
Crazy crazy crazy! He tries to cover everything really fast and ultimately never does. I often wondered what was going on and mostly sat in class and laughed at how lost I was. He makes up a study guide for the test that is HUGE and then asks questions about less than half of the material. The other part of the test are things you have never seen.
The concept of the course is fascinating. It's execution is less so. It took me half the semester to figure out the unique lecture style. Both of them are highly knowledgeable scattered. Instead of detailing significant events they try to skim 3000 years of history. This class gets a mixed review. Some parts were good some parts were def. not.
I took both Honors 201 and 202 from the Seelys and I loved this class! It is a lot of work, but if you stay on top of the assignments the tests really aren't that hard. Highly recommended.
The Seelys are nice; however, the assignment load was heavy, repetitive in some basic content, and overly detailed in others. The tests were mostly memorization. The lectures were interesting but poorly organized. We never finished anything despite the rapid pace. Also, they changed the class so that it started earlier, then often went over.
ENTHUSIASM!!! Professor Seely is a spectacular teacher. Every day is an adventure in his class. He provides excellent overviews, integrates class information with student interests and lives, and describes his extensive personal research and travel to make the material come alive.
The Seelys were phenomenal teachers who really inspire the desire to learn. However, the class covered A LOT of material in depth but still skimmish. I spent an average of 6-8 hours per week on readings, and about 10 hours studying for exams. The exams cover lots of material, but nothing that isn't on the study guide is on the test. Excellent prof!
Fantastic professor. Really knows the material and teaches the background, doctrine, and application. Really cares about the students. Very funny in class! Has great stories. Do the reading and fill out the study guide and you'll do well.
Very good teacher. Just write down what he says in lecture, do the 12+ chapters of reading for each class, and study every little thing on his review and you have an A. You WILL do more work in this class than any of the other 'required' religion classes. I spent at least 2.5 hours reading for each class. Good man, and want to help you.
Professor Seely is the man! I missed the midterm on accident and he was very understanding and let me retake it. He really teaches the old testament well, and whenever he's unsure of interpretation or studies he lets you know to take it for what it's worth. Thanks Bro. Seely!!
Rad. Yes there is a bit of reading and some work, but really fantastic. Cares a lot, tells great stories, and willing to do a lot for his students. Anyone who complains about this professor is clearly not willing to do work in COLLEGE.
FANTASTIC teacher. Classes are engaging and interesting. Really cares about the subject and his students. Tells stories that are applicable, and even entertaining. I highly recommend this teacher.
Why would you ever take a religion class from another professor after you have had one from Brother Seely? Some work, but a marvelous teacher. Really cares about the students and the class. Teaches with passion. If you do your reading, attend class, and fill out your study guide, A's all around!
Brother Seely kept the class interesting and brought the Spirit. He is SOO smart! I would take a class from him every semester if I could. There is some work, do your reading, fill out the study guide and you'll ace it!
Do not take from this teacher. Tests are extremely difficult and the things he tests on have no sigificance to the scriptures. With the number of religion teacher at BYU, I will not be taking from him again.
I look forward to going to class because Dr. Seely cares about the subject he teaches and about the students. He makes the class more enjoyable with his humor, stories, and personal application. I recommend this class.
Is fun and entertaining, but also gets lost in his own stories and then falls behind in the curriculum which then requires him to rush through what he meant to teach. The test's can be hard because they often require "what we said in class" answers, and because he gets so rushed it's often hard to know what he was saying.
Dr. Seely has great stories. He could entertain a wall. I enjoyed his insights into the scriptures. He did not get to the meat of a lot of chapters. I felt like he could have focused on more important doctrines. I liked the class
Professor Seely is a nice guy. His stories are funny, but he gets lost in them sometimes and it can be hard to follow the subject matter. He gives a study guide and will answer any questions you have about it; look at the study guide as soon as he posts it and bring questions to class. Grade is entirely tests and self-evaluated reading/attendance.
On your mark, get set, go: Bro Seely is an energetic guy and has some funny stories. However, he takes so many pauses from the lesson to tell stories that it becomes frustrating, and his questions are usually "what am I thinking" type. He really does help bring the OT to life though. The reading assignments can be summed up with one word: TEDIOUS.
He is an extremely boring teacher. Started this class days after my mission and he killed my desire to read the Book of Mormon. He makes the scriptures more of a homework than enjoyable. Would never recommend him. There are many other way superior/interesting teachers. He is also very boring and his tests are long and have massive study guid
Bro Seely is great! He loves what he teaches and that makes you love it too. He is always talking really fast but get sidetracked with stories so you get behind anyways, but the stories are worth it. It kind of gives him a sense of urgency that makes the class fly by, which I loved. Definitely taking another class from him if given the chance.
He's a fun guy. I look him for both of my BOM sections. The final was quite easy. It took me 20 minutes and got 99%. Just pay attention in class and it should be a breeze.
Great teacher! Take old testament from him! He knows so much and loves what he teaches. Only downside, there is a lot of reading. The class and the tests were easy. Everything that is on the tests will be on the study guide, which follow the powerpoints he explains in class.
This guy is great. Study his review papers great and have fun learning from him cause he is great!
I really like Brother Seely. This class is a lot of work, but I learned so much. The best part is you know exactly what he expects of you on the tests. He gives great study guides. So you work hard, learn a lot, and get a good grade!
I loved Bro. Seely's lectures! He always had awesome stories to tell every class! There is a LOT of reading, but I don't mind that. My only frustration was that he had one question per test about something he never mentioned in class or the studyguide. But I would definitely take one of his classes again! Just one tip: go through the studyguide!!
Brother Seely is THE BEST teacher I have ever had in my entire life! I don't like history, but his passion and excitement for the subject made me excited for class every day! He is always willing to go the extra mile to make sure his students succeed! In short, I would recommend him to a friend, to you, and I would recommend Bro. Seely to God!
Bro. Seely is one of the greatest professors I've ever had. He is passionate about what he teaches and really is an expert. No one can match his lectures for information and entertainment. Bro. Seely changed my life. Anyone who passes up the opportunity to take a class from him is missing out.
Bro Seely is awesome! He is the type of guy that we are all trying to become. His lectures are fun and he tells entertaining stories. Make sure you bring your study guide to class and fill it out every day and you will get an A. He is also very willing to help students out. I loved taking new testament from him. I learned a lot.
His lectures are extremely scattered. He has hardly any structure to his class. Spends the first 10-15 minutes of each lecture talking to students and getting to know him. He has really bad handwriting and its hard to read what he write on the board. His scattered structure makes it hard to follow what he is teaching. He is a very nice guys though!
Lectures are very interesting and informative, although he usually gets behind with funny stories/tangents. You're expected to read a lot of scripture for credit. Tests are easy if you study.
He is the cutest man. I do adore him, he's a really great guy. He really wants the students to succeed. He cares about all his students, and is really funny in class. He is a riot to listen to. He is very scatterbrained, however, but if you fill out the study guide during class you'll be fine and it's an easy A.
I liked his stories okay but he tried to cram WAY too much into the course. I don't even remember much (if any) of it at all now. Tedious readings often weren't very relevant or interesting. I didn't get much of my huge study guide filled out during the actual class and had to resort to thoroughly going through power points.
Brother Seely is the cutest and the nicest man on the planet. He is such a genuinely caring guy, it's seriously a joy to go to his classes. Yes, his lectures are very scattered, but all you have to do is have the study guide open on your computer and take down answers as he says them. If you do that, the class is seriously a piece of cake.
I took old testament from Brother Seely and he is honestly a really nice guy. He wants students to succeed and will meet one on one with anyone. Unfortunately, over class he basically only covers like 25% of the study guide, so the rest of them you have to find on your own. I found the tests to be very challenging, worst grade i've gotten at BYU.
Prof Seely is a great person! He is hilarious and has awesome stories. When it comes to the tests, there's barely anything on it from what he taught you. Its all based off of the study guide. Its probably the hardest Religion class I have taken at BYU. Again, great professor with great stories, if it was a pass/fail class....
Brother Seely is awesome! His tests are a breeze because he gives a very specific study guide to go along with each lecture, and posts his powerpoints so you can go back and fill it out later if you want. He goes off on tangents sometimes, but they are always very interesting, and uplifting. Take BOM from Br. Seely!
Brother Seely is a seriously humble guy, but he knows almost everything there is to know about the Old Testament and how Judaism connects to the scriptures. He's a very chill teacher and it's a low-stress classroom environment, but I feel like I learned a lot from him. Take this class! His stories are hilarious and he cares about you as a person.
Exams have lots of scriptures you're supposed to memorize but no study guide to tell you a list of specific scriptures to memorize. All he does in class is read slides and say "We're so behind. We gotta be quick." etc. bad teacher. tough exams. boring class. I would avoid unless you like boring teachers....
Brother Seely was a great professor and was very caring towards his students. Great professor.
While Bro Seely is a very kind man, would not recommend his class. Took 10 minutes at the beginning of class to get to know the student saying the prayer. Very kind, but as a result, the lectures were always rushed. Had 3 tests total, including the final. Other grades based on attendance and reading. Study guides about 20 pages, way unreasonable.
Brother Seely is a great teacher. He removed the stress of BYU scripture trivia from his classroom. His lectures are insightful and entertaining. He posts his powerpoints on learning suite. As long as you read your scriptures, go to class, and do the study guide you will get an A, and be spiritually lifted. I would recommend it 100% of the time.
Perhaps not quite as enlightening as I hoped, but I do understand better why the OT can be so repugnant sometimes. It was good to review a lot of OT stories and learn some new ones. He had some mostly edifying, interesting personal experiences too.
It's a great class, you'll learn so much about the Old Testament and you'll get a great deal of historical background along with the doctrine. He's funny and makes it all very memorable.
Brother Seely's passion for the BOM comes through in this class. I took a few classes from him because I love him so much. He's very sweet, has so many inspirational stories, and is extremely knowledgeable. Take his class. Some people complain that the tests are hard, but you can fill out the study guide with his PPs. A on test 2-3 hours of prep.
Bro Seely cares so much about the students! He is very passionate. His lectures are a little scatterbrained and he would rather teach than start a discussion but he makes up for it with his personal experiences. He does all he can to make the class easier for you.
Funny dude with all of his stories. You can tell he loves what he teaches when he argues with himself not to keep rambling about some doctrine. He does get rushed because he doesn't use time wisely but overall a genuine guy. Fun class, relatively easy. Very little work required but you need to study for the tests.
Prof. Seely is a nice person, but not a great professor. His lectures are very disorganized as well as the study guides, and slides. The only thing this is well organized is the textbook, that was written by a different professor (Prof. Pike) I experienced changes to the study guide, after an exam had opened! I got an A out of spite. Very annoying.
Brother Seely is a great teacher, but if you are looking for a class to get an A in, be very careful. The way it is set up is there are 3 exams (very specific/difficult - 650 terms of Quizlet) and one exam's points worth for attendance and if you have read. That means to get an A, you need at least a 92 or above, average, on each of the tests.
What a great dude. He tries to balance the spiritual and academic aspects of the gospel and does so very well. If you show up and do the reading, its an easy A. The study guide is a breeze, but he doesnt really cover it explicitly; he more covers the main stuff that are actually on the test. Reading is well-spaced. Tests are straightforward.
He is very nice and cares about his students. However, he expects you to remember specific verses of scripture, who said what, and who really obscure people are from the bible. His study guides are 6+ pages long, so its not helpful or specific at all. I felt that I had to teach myself a lot of the time.
Only take this class if you actually love the Old Testament. I really enjoyed it and thought the lectures, readings, and tests were straightforward. Bro. Seely is definitely someone you can learn from.
Hes really nice and is passionate about what he teaches. He says he balances spiritual and academic but I didnt feel the spirit because during lectures I was filling out the long disorganized lesson study guides. Hes not a tough grader and gives most points for the written questions on the exams. Keep in mind this class is designed for seniors.
Brother Seely knows his stuff! So if you wanted to learn about the Old Testament- you will. Wonderful teacher.
Of all the religion courses I have taken at BYU this has been the most difficult. I had more homework each week from this class than I did from my 5 engineering classes combined. It's a lot of reading, online discussions, difficult tests that quiz you on "who said what", and some short papers. He is a very kind man, but I can't recommend his class.
I absolutely loved Prof. Seely! I took his 9 am class this semester as a freshman. I thought it would be really difficult but it isn't. As long as you show up to class, take notes during lectures, write the response papers, and study for tests, you'll do great in this class! He is really funny and flexible, so if you have a problem, just reach out.
Bro. Seely is SUPER kind, and accommodates, no questions asked. I submitted many assignments late and got full credit. All assignments are graded on completion, not content, so do the work and you will pass easy. Beware that he assigns quite a bit of reading and is lecture heavy. His study guides also end up around 30pgs per unit once filled out.
Professor Seely cares more about his students actually learning than just being ready for a test. Yes, the tests can be pretty in-depth, but he goes over all of the material in class, and is willing to boost the entire class's scores if he thinks the average is a little low.
Amazing man. Hardest class I ever took. So much memorization of people/dates/events that extends beyond the Old Testament and the writings of Isaiah. Willing to accommodate and wanted us to become friends with Isaiah, but lectures were overwhelming. Lectures off of 50+ slides per class and oftentimes gets behind. Insane amounts of reading.
Just a really caring professor who is passionate about what he teaches and teaches in an interesting way. Sometimes we'd get behind but that was alright.
THE BEST PROFESSOR YOU'LL EVER HAVE.
Kindest professor you'll ever have. Passionate about the subject material, and very responsive to individual needs. Very lecture/reading heavy and he often got behind, but exams only tested the covered material. Tests were hard, but he gave very detailed study guides to fill out in class- test questions were directly taken from the guides.
Brother Seely was a pretty good teacher. He gives you all the tools to pass the class as long as you try. He got behind in a bunch of my classes and tried to catch us up, and the slides were very numerous and kind of unorganized, but he did make sure to cover anything possible on the test, and his test prep sheets are super, super helpful.
Brother Seely is an amazing person. However, I don't think that he's the best professor. I often found that i would come out of classes more confused than before. The study guides are not, in my opinion, the most useful for preparing for the exam
Great teacher, even better person. Pretty chill and is willing to give extensions for work(don't abuse it though)
Brother Seely is super nice and caring, he is patient and cares about what his students are going through. Each class is a lecture that has a study guide that he goes through. He is very fair with tests and grading. He is a bit scattered when it comes to lectures but I still learned a lot and enjoyed his class.
Brother Seely is a lecturer. If you prefer discussions, you won't get those much from this class. That said he teaches everything very clearly. He is respectful and highlights the heroines in the Old Testament
I think Bro Seely was a good enough BoM professor, he often went on irrelevant tangents during class that put us behind, but if you did the work you likely passed. Assignments included: weekly reading checks + digital dialogs, 2 midterms + the final (not cumulative & weighed the same), 3 short writing assignments, and longer art writing assignment.
He is super funny and has lots of awesome inspiring stories....except we are always behind on lectures and never finish the study guide so you have to do a lot on your own. You actually have to study for the tests but if you do you will get an A.
I loved Dr. Seely! He was hilarious. My class must have been tired but he dropped the funniest lines that no one would laugh at. He also has lots of experience with the New Testament. Lecture heavy, and we got behind. He is quite merciful, and the tests aren't too hard, I would do the readings and go over the study guide, but you'll be fine.
