Most all-encompassing, relevant, insightful, life changing course I ever took.
Great prof. Clear. Fair. Best when he creates discussion. A must for Arts stu

Know-it-all, condescending and actually picks favourites.
Jokes r some wat funny, class discussions r great
funny
Excellent teaching/dialog. Ignores pointless questions asked by students. Nice!
somewhat condescending but created an interesting course
AMAZING prof!! Really enjoyed his class! Made up for Demarco's stupidity!
Arrogant to a fault...but at least he admits it. His tests are simple stuff.
Spends too much time digressing.
Very condescending when he helps, constant corny sex jokes.
easy tests, assignments can be done 30 mins before class
gets off topic, sex jokes, easy assignments
Boring, dull, goes on and on about nothing...
I like his passion for this course and his humour

dry humor
Very well organized and prepared for lectures. Easy assignments/tests.

Great prof! Very creative with presenting the course information.
Rude and arrogant. Didn't learn anything really, but assignments were easy..
thought-provoking dialogue. He's not arrogant, you're just stupid.
the guy's voice might be a bit boring but his dialogue is pretty engaging if you're interested in the course.
His lectures were utterly boring. His tests were somewhat nausiating. Going to class was an overall hassle.
got me hooked in soc... he's hilarious and enjoys the class... he is arrogant but i love it!! wicked!
Worst class ever. Hard. Boring. Repetitive.
he is the best prof ever,so fricikin cool
Somewhat repetitive and can be condescending at times, but interesting, engaging material. The tests were a bit tough, expecting you to remember minutae of something he glossed over two weeks previously.
Going to his religons class at night was honestly like torture. The minutes creeped by. The tests got into way to much detail, and he gave them to you at the end of a lecture with that same material on it. If you don't want to be BORED to death, stay away
A great guy, with interesting and thought provoking material but has hard assignments and his tests include little details of things we didn't cover in detail.
He never stopped talking about one topic and he kept with it through the whole term. He would relate everything back to this one topic. He is also very disorganized.. but he is a nice man
Worst, most boring class ever! This prof stands and the front and tortures you for 3 hours. Tests are needlessly hard. He knows his material well, but I would reccommend not taking this class.
Very good lecturer with a sense of humour and a passion for world religions. Very approachable and helpful. I do agree that his tests tend to trick you with minor details. And what's the deal with giving exams at the END of a lecture??
Great Prof!
I don't know how this guy made it into McLeans for one of UWs top profs. Very dull classes and readings. Tests are also difficult. Is a nice guy and smart but he cant teach!!!!! DON'T TAKE A CLASS HIM HIM!!!
Clearly outlined lectures with lecture notes. Trys to throw in a joke here and there to switch things up. Tests are very reasonable and material interesting.
very helpful! lectures are sometimes boring but he tries to make it more interesting. I took this course as a bird course but much to my surprise it was harder than i thought it was. nice teacher.
An interesting course, but he made it very boring and seemed to frequently repeat the same topics. His tests were not a fair assessment of what was covered in class and were therefore very difficult.A nice man, but bad teacher, very condescending.
Great prof: goes over exactly what is going to be on each test. Looks like he could be a part of Hair Club for Men. HOT! Some difficult/boring readings, but generally awesome :)
yeah, he's a hotty in that tweedy, Volvo-driving, bearded professor sort of way. snarky devil, which is appropriate for the course he teaches.
passionate about the subject, but he could do more to make it interesting. tests are very difficult. make sure you do the readins and actually understand them. this is important. know the important people from the readings, and what they said!!
he is awesome, very good lecturer. he is passionate and knows his information! make sure to do the readings and attend lectures and you will do awesome!! no final for the class, wohoo!
I hated this prof. One of the worst I had. It seems like you either like him or hate him. I definitely hated him, and will never take another class with him. The tests were hard and the paper was even worse
Nice guy, but expects way too much for a first year course. Ridiculous how he has a manditory class the night of Halowe'en, EVERY YEAR! I think I learned more about his family than the actual evil in the world (I really don't need to know how you had to check your kids for worms)
AWESOME PROF, he teaches very well...very smart respect the man fully
An excellent person 2 b teaching a RS clas Doesn't shove one particular religion down ur throat.intellegent, knows his stuff funny genuinely nice person passionate. this course is reallllllyyy interesting.even life altering.dont worry not 2 difficult once u go 2 class & do the reading u will b fine.
Not a bad class, but not that interesting either. I didn't go to many classes and still got a fairly decent mark.
this course was harder than i anticipated.. still it is interesting.
Not being educated in any type of religion, I found this course extremely hard, and my final mark will relect it. The course description led me to believe the course would handle different material. Good Prof though, approachable and friendly, always there for questions. Good sense of humour!
WORST PROF EVER!!! its funny how he teaches religion but is the meanest person ever!! i found it quite ironic! he needs to be in another profession...he is brutal as a prof! i will NEVER take another course with him ever! even if he was the last prof on the planet
Great prof, lots of jokes, lots of laughs. Interesting course material, and he thankfully doesnt push any religion over the others. Tests were pretty easy, but the assignments are marked pretty hard
Much harder than anticipated and in my opinion, the T.As were overly harsh. Still, intriguing and thought provoking. One of those 'classic-movie-type' classes you see in the movies.
I think he's a very arrogant prof. He had a pleasant lecturing demeanor, but once in a while he'd say something that would be a little too off-colour to be a joke. The tests were ridiculous, every other question had an "all of the above/none of the above", I think that's lazy item writing.
One of the best profs i have had; Funny, tells jokes, intresting, easy to talk to, helpful...I took other RS classes hoping they would live up to this one, but they came no where close!
Very clear about what he expects on tests and papers, lectures are always interesting, and he is absolutely hilarious to boot. I'll certainly take another class of his.
Wonderful. He was an excellent prof, very clear on what he wanted especially on assignments which made it alot easier. I will deffinetly take another one of his classes.
do good on his papers because his tests will****you.
He's a passionate teacher who actually cares about students - he wants you to do well and learn. Amazing teacher.
Class ended up being not what I expected, but he does give you a pretty clear view of what you should know for his tests/papers. No exam is a plus. Lectures a little dry, but otherwise it was a descent experience, for what was eventually offered. Don't believe the course description though...
Really good teacher. Tells funny jokes that I write in the margin so I can tell them to people later. He's good looking for an older man.
Good prof. Funny guy. If you do the readings you should do fine. Classes are kinda interesting but after an hour its hard to pay attention. Tests are ok.
he tries to be funny and can be at times
Overall good experience in his evil class. Content was interesting. A good speaker, with good clarity and for the most part gets to his point. Tests are overall easy if lectures were attended and readings read. No major surprises. Class recommended.
I found it very hard to will myself to attend his class. Both he and the readings are dreadfully repetetive without making the meaning any clearer. He also tries way too hard to be funny and will often stall his lecture for a couple of minutes until someone laughs at his jokes. The material was horribly boring, and made even worse by him.Don't take
good prof - interesting enough - tests were easy but the TA's were pretty harsh in marking papers ...
Seljak was very funny, he tries to relate to his students. The content was interesting but it can be difficult because the terms are foreign. You should read the textbook and go to class.
The tests were super easy if u read over the lecture notes, but the assignment was marked completely unfairly. He jokes a lot his classes were interesting but, ya DO NOT blow off the assignment as easy just bcus the tests are. I'd take it again, the txt is good too.
He was funny... take evil instead
the course it self blew and the readings were extremly confusing,he didnt really clear anything up he just pretty much re read the book which was no help The movies were awful and hard to take note on what was important he also tried to be funny which granted sometimes he was but kinda grew tiersome by the end I also felt he was hard/unfair marker
I personally hated his class. His lectures were useless and put me to sleep.
I had him for Religions of the East first then took his Evil class just because he was teaching it - it turned out to be really interesting and thought provoking. I think he is a great professor.
He is entertaining in class, however he does mispronounce a lot of the names in the text. The term assignment is marked super hard. HINT: For the tests know his course slides very well, most of the questions are straight off his slides. Also if he shows a video take notes, he loves to put lots of questions from videos.
Not 100% on the course code, but it was Evil in winter 2006. This guy is great...I learned a lot. Tricky tricky with the changing of the course name to attract more attn! ...do the readings, respect his class (he once told a girl her outfit was too racy for class...my hero.
this class was death. m/c test based mostly on lectures. not good test of your actual knowledge. took 2 weeks to get back to me on whether or not i could rewrite the essay. no final. blah, boring.
He tries really hard to get students' attention by returning tests LATE. Late as in weeks after. But he got two TAs to help him. It was supposed to be a simple course but his M/C questions are very hard. I felt like taking a level 300 course. He thinks he's so good by not responding to my email. That's why he's stuck in Waterloo for his whole life.
I took evil in fall 2005 and this was by far the easiest first year course I've ever done. 3 tests, no exam, no paper= golden! After i finished he sent asked me to switch my major to RS. Some of the books were dry and he expects a Christian background from his students and is unwilling to explain theology that should be aparent. I got 89 easily.
Found his lectures have no flow, it's difficult to follow what he's talking about. Tests are pretty hard, 31 multiple choice questions and 20 minutes to answer them. Can be funny at times, very dry sense of humour though. TA marked the papers really hard.
Unfair exams, it's a lot of material for a few MC questions and not a lot of time to do it in. I feel like the classes could be more interesting though, the things he talks about have the potential to be interesting, but class tends to be boring. And its a lot of reading.
Evil was the birdiest bird course in the history of bird courses. Skipped about 70% of his lectures, still passed easily. Just skim over his lecture notes, and take guesses on the tests. He himself is rather funny, but the topics are so boring. Take evil if you want an easy pass with little work.
Evil was a good class. Try to make it to lectured for bonus questions on tests, but you can easily rely on his powerpoints (provided on ACE). You don't have to read everything, but make sure you do a good skim of the material for testing. Funny and entertaining in class, but can often get off track...which is sometimes a welcome break.
Hard tests, yet they mainly focus on overall concepts; however many questions are arbitrary, and you will end up scoring lower because you forgot a little detail. He tries to make things interesting, but sometimes drags on. Was consistently late. Hard marker - low class average.
By far the most boring class I have ever taken. If I had known that this was not a bird course, I would not have taken it. So much reading for a 30 question M.C. test!
I took RS121 online but I must say it was my best class! Dr. Seljak possesses great clarity when explaining and pronounces words/names perfectly fine. He likes to relate things to the students level to make it easier for us to understand concepts. Slides are very important so make sure to pay close attention because questions are very precise.
Super interesting course although IT IS NOT EASY! Tons of readings and the tests are stupidly and randomly detailed. The material is very interesting (especially to a PACS major) but this is NOT a bird course. Way too hard to be first year. I'm third year and I had to work harder in this course than any other I was taking at the time.
He's an amazing prof. He's really funny as well. So helpful. Tough course because there are A LOT of readings. He's very fair in marking tests and assignments. He takes attendance (worth 10%) but it motivates you to come to class for easy marks.
Class is super easy if you actually attend class. There are a lot of readings but I didn't actually read them and I still got an A. Test questions are a bit ambiguous which makes them kind of hard. Two small assignments which are from the readings. Take this class!
Really good prof. Would make sure that material was understood before continuing. Although it is a Religious Studies course, the religious component is small. Which is nice. He is also easy to reach most of the time. Great Class!
Lecturer is either too slow or too fast in his speech. The slides don't seem to flow well with his narrating. The worst part of this course is the exams. Way too specific, and not enough time (30 minutes to answer 30 questions). Do not take his online courses.
Great professor! There were 5 tests worth 20% each in the class. So as long as you study the lecture material and read the textbook then it's very possible to get an A+ in the course. I definitely recommend taking this course with him!
boring, rude, and offensive when he thinks he is being funny. Not helpful at all, tells you you're on the right track then fails you for what you wrote. ignores emails, takes attendance every class. tells students he doesn't understand why they can't get it when everyone else can when they go to him for help, etc. wouldn't recommend
The content is super interesting and you can get pretty much all of it just from the lectures. The larger reading for the final paper is extremely necessary to read, but I did well (high 80s) with only skimming one or two of the others
Love him! One of my favourite profs!
He is an amazing professor! I definitely recommend taking any course that he is teaching. His lecture slides are clear and concise. He is available after class and during office hours to answer questions or have a discussion on any topic.
Awesome professor, very knowledgeable. Took a few of his courses and wish I could take more. He's an awesome lecturer who keeps your interest and has many bad dad jokes up his sleeve. His classes are very enjoyable and he will respect your difference of opinion (at least to your face).
His lectures are incredibly boring and dry. Goes on tangents or even forgets what is being talked about. I don't wanna be ageist but he is occupying employment for someone who actually needs it. His feedback was poor, he is unhelpful and judgmental when you ask for help. Sociology is an easy subject, but he makes it hard.
