Oratory in america is a hard class.
He is the smartest teacher i've ever had in my life. bar none
class is way too much work for a 100 course
to much work
a lot of work that goes unnoticed. he's very attentive to details.
A lot of work, but teaches a lot if you are willing to learn. Intersting course.

Nice at first, but gives a lot of work and gets behind very quickly in class. Hard grader and doesn't clarify when you go to him for help. Smart, but very critical.

Nice professor but a tough class. Too much work! Don't take this class if you will take more than one science classes. It will mess up your life...
This instructor is a very friendly guy. I would love to take another class with him, but he is a very, very hard grader. No one received an A in our class except for one person on her revision; all other grades were B+s and below.
i left another wr 100 class for this class. its awesome. any writing cls you take is going 2 give u "2 much work" but this class was relatively easier. although he is a hard grader, he is flexible and the reading isn't too hard. class discussion
shawn is awesome. i love coming to his class. and the best thing about "oratory in america" is that the speeches can only get so long... so the readings are short, and best of all... no novels!!! pick this class for a great time.
He gave a lot of work but he also worked very hard and had an enthusiasm for what he was teaching. Strict but fair. Three years and he's still the only professor I liked.
shawn sucks. dont take this class
This class majorly sucks, especially if you are just taking it because the time fits your schedule. Don't take it unless you are very interested in speeches. He grades very very hard and is unclear as to what the assignments are.
mostly freshman take Shawn's class first semester and they complain about it being hard. He is a tough grader... but welcome to college. I had him last semester and I learned so much from his class that i have used in EVERY class since. He's a good guy
unclear on how to improve your writing & cares more about his opinion than yours
nice guy but not a good teacher! He will never tell you directly how bad your paper is because he is afraid that he will hurt your feelings. Yet so critical! very hard to get good grade in his class.
d. shawn so enthusiastic about class. really nice guy, true a little hard on the grading, but very helpful if you make the effort to go and work with him. participate in class! and don't get too annoyed by his disorganization.
Condescending stickler
Dr. Shawn can get incredibly disorganized, but he's a good professor. He'll give you extra time on a paper if you need it and he is really understanding. He's a tough grader, but overall a good professor if you do your work and establish a relationship.
Prof Shawn is pretty good. Instructions were unclear often and this gets annoying, but assignments were fair and fairly graded. He always encouraged discussion and new ideas. Visit him at his office hours, hes very nice and worth getting to know.
He is very unclear about what he wants and his assignments are often confusing. He assigns a lot of work and then never follows up on it or checks it, so it goes to waste. He's a very hard grader, favors people who kiss up and participate by b.s.ing in class. Don't take this class/he can't teach

Transfered into this class right before the deadline, and I ended up really enjoying it. He's a tough grader, but he's also pretty fair and willing to help you write very well if you want to. I feel like I actually got something out of this class.
Nice enough as a person... But not so great when it comes to actually teaching. Classes are so disorganized, you never get anything done! Readings are pointless & you can def get by without doing them. Pretty tough grader for being so vague about everything... I would not recommend his class.
don't take this class if you want to learn something, or want to improve your writing skills. he has his own style of writing (that is totally nonsense) that he wants EVERY single student to follow. horrible horrible. just horrible. i mean it's not even just boring or useless, its just ...mean.
I took his WR150 class because it was the only one left when I registered... what a mistake! Readings are useless, I can't think of a single thing I actually LEARNED... He's so scatterbrained and disorganized, class is just a waste of time. I highly advise against taking his class... :-/
The BORINGEST class I have EVER taken. I thought with oratory, it would be a better discussion of a wider variety of oratic techniques. You analyze the boringest speeches EVER. He is the harshest grader--he will change your paper to suit his opinion, then contradict his own corrections later. BAD
DShawn is a great guy who's really enthusiastic about the subject and willing to help his students. He genuinely cares about his students and is a fair grader. I definitely recommend this class!
Nice guy, the material is a little dense but like others have said you can get by without reading much. Get to know him and be one of the "losers" that doesn't just sit there in class and your grade will be helped. I reccommend the class as long as you are somewhat interested in the topic.
American Oratory was an amazing class. Sometimes a difficult grader. Be prepared to discuss things. You have to work hard but the material is not overly difficult. I actually learned a lot and the content is really interesting. He's an odd but really nice guy.
prof shawn was a difficult grader with unrealistic expectations for his students. the readings (emerson, hawthorne, thoreau) fared to be rather dense and boring. go to his office hours to discuss papers one-on-one, since that will be the most attention and explained feedback he will give you.
I love Professor Shawn! He is incredibly enthusiastic about literature, and always enocourages his students. He grades fairly.
Prof Shawn is a really nice guy. Knows what hes taking about. Pretty hard grader, prolly the hardest I've had for papers.
Prof. Shawn expects a lot out of you but gives a lot back in return. He really knows what he's talking about and isnt afraid to tell someone when they're just completely wrong, so you don't have to listen to a lot of boring BS from kids who are trying to get participation grades by rambling.
Worst professor I've had. Not only does he grade unfairly, but he also treats you poorly if you don't kiss up for your participation grade (as most students do) or if you don't share his beliefs. If you're not willing to be the obnoxious teacher's pet DON'T take this class. And if you are, STILL DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is way too biased and cold
I agree 100% with the last comment. He's biased and picks favorites. He treated some girls in my class like crap for no reason. He has mood swings and acts strange, flirting with some students and acting condescending to others. I learned nothing and just realized that not all BU professors are up to par. Respect yourself and don't take this class.
definitely agree with the previous two comments. they described him perfectly. he's just a mean person who tries to mask his cruelty with an insincere smile. don't take this class unless you are a masochist
I completely disagree. Prof Shawn was tough but kept a lively class. His grading was harsh, and I've never had to work so hard in a writing class, but it improved my writing. Just participate in class and make sure you go to office hours so he can check over what you have BEFORE you hand it in. I learned the most doing it this way. Take his class!
wow is all i can say. this man was obviously not loved as a child. he has something odd going on in his head. he chooses to like (fake smile at / flirt with) some students and hate others. he's the most awkward person ever (trips, walks into things, gets embarrassed easily) so it's ironic that he teaches a writing on oratory class. don't get him!
Seems nice and friendly at first but a really strict grader. Highest grade for the first paper was a B. I normally get A's and have a C-. Even if you go to office hours and he helps WRITE your paper, he still gives you a bad grade. Condescending, misleading, unfair, many backhanded comments... LOTS OF WORK.... take someone ELSE
worst teacher i have ever had. he is unclear in directions and incredibly hypocritical. he should not be teaching emerson and thoreau if he does not believe that everyone can have their own opinions. he will help you out with your paper during office hours but then marks what he suggested wrong after you turn it in. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
Prof. Shawn's helpful. He's tough on the grading, which seems to make some students bitter, but the course material is interesting and you'll really learn how to write if you try.
i liked professor shawn. no one else seemed to like him who was in my class and i didn't do great, but i think he was fair and actually a pretty good guy. i wish i put more effort in the class because it's a pretty interesting topic. everyone told me not to take the class but i was stuck with it. i learned a lot though and he made is participate.
Extremely hard grader that doesn't have a curve. Had to work so hard to get a decent grade. Normally get A's and have been getting C's in his class. Have to attend all of his office hours, suck up to him, and have him go over all your ideas BEFORE handing them in. Not what you want in a wr150 course, do not recommended
Very hard teacher and very harsh grader. Didn't help much when office hours were available.
Are we talking about the same prof? Shawn's a really nice guy and a really good teacher. I just did all the paper's, handed them in on time and got a B+.
Extremely hard grader that only cares about his points of views (difficult when it’s a political subject), friendly demeaner leads misguides you, arrogant jerk, AVOID AVOID AVOID if you’re just looking to pass wr150 requirments. I’m a 3.5 premed major and this class was my only B…. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Shawn is the single worst professor I have ever encountered. He is interested in the subject, but almost seems aggravated when students approach for office hours. His grading is sporadic and is harsh. Some students like him because he seems nice, it's fake. You do not deserve to be in college if you take his course after reading my review.
He is a great guy. The subject matter can get kind of murky and as a result his explanations can get bogged down in little details (I mean, transcendentalism is based on interpretation), but his class was so much fun. I completely recommend him on the condition that you go in willing to have fun and put in a little intellecutal effort.
I decided to ignore what ratemyprofessor.com said and take his class anyway- I WILL NEVER make that mistake again. If you are DEVOTED to the subject matter, and know what you're talking about, you'll be set- but if you want to learn about it w/out knowing- just don't. You think you hand in a good paper, then get a C.
I learned a ton in this class. I thought Shawn was very fair and a good listener. Take!
Shawn rocks! People who say he's fake are just typical whiners. Grow up, do some work, and actually earn the A you think you deserve for just showing up, losers.
He does rock, as far as political rehtoric goes. I had a good time in this class and would take it again.
The way in which Shawny teaches his lessons is completely absurd. He is not helpful, as his answer to most questions is typically "it depends." Shawn has no trouble in tearing up what you say, so have fun expressing yourself. Wicked hard to get an A, but if you're one of his favorites, who knows.. in short (or "in sum"), Shawn is a hardcore BAMF.
I thought that this class would be interesting to take during the election and it was. However, Professor Shawn is teaching an oratory class and he cannot even give clear directions as to what he wants on an assignment. He was not helpful during office hours and if you don't like giving presentations don't take this class. It would be suicide!!!!!!
I thought Professor Shawn's class and discussions were extremely interesting. While somewhat intimidating during class, he was very helpful during office hours, and actually cared to get to know you. He will make you work hard for your grade, but I improved tremendously as a writer with his assistance.
I took his American Oratory class, and while the in-class discussions and some assignments (in-class debate, for example) were interesting, he was an extremely unfair grader; upwards of 75% of the class received a C+, without variation. The highest grade I ever received on a paper was a B+, and I think I saw ONE A in the entire class. I'd stay away
Great guy and no so hard a grader. I got an A- and know someone else who did, and I know some high Bs too. I don't know where Mr. or Ms. 75%C+ got hisher data....
Topic was interesting but the grading was extremely unfair. I recieved C's on my rough drafts AND on my rewrites, and I am by no means a C-grade writer.I would make changes he told me to make and still get marked wrong. He favors students who come to see him often. Inconsistent, grades on potential. Nice guy. Made me work, killed my gpa hardcore.
Shawn is a great professor and a really nice guy. He makes lectures interesting and is extremely nice and helpful during office hours. He really helped me improve my writing. Other people complain that he is too tough grading but I didn't think so at all.
Professor Shawn is the worst teacher I've had in college. He insults many comments in class and then restates the same thing. Harsh grader too.
Very rude and degrading. Will shut down any ideas that he does not agree with. Very unfair grader, told me I was one of the best writers in the class and gave me a B+. Classes are extremely boring. Shawn should be avoided at all cost.
Professor Shawn is by far my least liked "writing" professor I have ever had. Though he is understanding with late papers (conflicts with exams, sickness, etc.) he is the hardest grader, and gives the worst feedback ever. I would receive feedback on papers and follow them to the T, and I still would not receive over a C. DO NOT TAKE.
I'm going to have to disagree. Shawn is a bit degrading and clueless, but that's what made the class enjoyable. His comments to some students were funny! Class was easy; we basically talked about speeches and did nothing. The papers were difficult, getting an A is probably not possible though. He likes heated discussions btw ;)
Professor Shawn fosters debates in his classroom which makes the topics much more intriguing. He will call on people at random, but is cool if you aren't sure on the answer either. The first essay grade doesn't count which was nice so you can get adjusted. I finished the year with a B+ and had received an A- on a paper. Take this class
I can't believe I'm reading bad comments on this guy. He's a great professor. He loves debates and talks in class and lets student do most of the talking with some guidance. The topics are interesting and he's always very helpful when you need help on a paper. He also just seems like a genuine good guy who enjoys what he does.Humble, kind, not too harsh
Great teacher always willing to help. He is understanding inside and outside of class. He might drill you but only to make you a beter writer. If you put the effort, then you will ge an A.
Shawn is by far one of the best English instructors I have ever had. Not only did he help me write better, he was also available to talk to about politics, history, and my personal aspirations. He's a great guy. Show him that you care about his assignments, then he will grade very fairly.
He asks a lot of his students, expects you to keep up with the readings, and will call on you at random. Though he is one of the most understanding professors I've had. If you show you care and work your ass off he'll forgive almost anything (including me missing a ridiculous amount of class) He's a funny great guy
Professor Shawn is great! Very nice, very good at teaching. You're guaranteed to come out a better writer from his class.
Oratory in America was an interesting class, even for me, who is not into history. He definitely expects a lot out of the papers, but is always extremely helpful outside of class. As long as you talk during class, he'll appreciate you.
Really likes this professor. He is helpful inside and outside the classroom. May be a tough grader but you really learn things in his class.
Really kind and helpful. At first I did not find him that great but as the semester went on I started to really like him. He will give you all the help you need. Take his class
Professor Shawn was very helpful. He expects a lot from his students, and rewards those who really give their best. I learned a lot, worked hard and it eventually payed off.
He is a very nice teacher and an even better person, but the topic is not interesting or motivating. He expects a lot from you and ends up grading you quite harshly. If you take the time you could have a great grade, but it is writing so not that many people care enough to get excellent grades.
He is very nice, but doesn't seem too interested in grading our papers. He takes way too long to get grades back. Not even confident he fully read our final papers because the grades came back so fast. He repeatedly told me how great my writing was and how impressed he was, but gave me a B/B- on the paper. Class time is pointless, but mandatory.
For a mandatory freshman writing class, way to much work. Every night it 70% of my work was devoted to his class. His grading is way too difficult as well. Said i wrote one of the best papers in the class... got a B-/C+....
Wonderful professor. Extremely helpful inside and outside of class. Go to office hours!! He's incredibly understanding and will sometimes let you rewrite papers. He was also very excited about his subject, which was inspiring and motivating. Take this class!
Professor Shawn is really great. I went to his office hours frequently, and he was always willing to help me. He even let me rewrite my paper when I forgot to include a source. The class is very interesting if you are AT ALL interested in Abraham Lincoln. Shawn is a tough grader, but he is reasonable.
Great professor. Don't take this class unless you're very interested in Lincoln himself as a person because it's not really about the Civil War at all. His class is pretty clear and he is always available to help outside of the classroom! May be a little boring at times, but had an overall good experience.
Professor Shawn is a tough, but fair grader, and is readily available for any help you might need. His was my favorite class of the semester, he is very funny and always in a good mood. If you want to learn how to write, take his class!
Professor Shawn is kind and very intelligent. He made the class feel like a community, and was always very excited to talk about Lincoln. I learned a lot about developing my writing even though I thought I was a very good writer to begin with. He is very accessible and extremely helpful if you take the time to go to his office hours.
Interesting class, makes it engaging, but tedious over time. But do not expect a good final grade, all grades received in this class are 2 grade levels below what you deserve. Extremely harsh grader, does not recognize your efforts.
Professor Shawn is a very passionate teacher and enjoys getting to know his students. He does assign a decent amount of reading and long essays. However I still had days without homework. Professor Shawn always makes himself available to his students. I seriously encourage going to meet with him. He is a great help if you struggle with a paper!
Great speaker, passionate about his subject. Readings usually take less than an hour, try to never miss class, and absolutely participate! His papers require some more in-depth analysis, but go to office hours! Talking to him makes everything clear. Take the class if you enjoy Abraham Lincoln. I grew a lot as a writer and as a reader.
One of the best teachers ever! He is so caring and is super helpful! Go to his office hours because he will help immensely! He is really one of the best professors ever! I am so sad that I won't have him next semester. I HIGHLY recommend taking his class! You will do well if you go to office hours! Even if you don't, he is still super nice !
My writing has definitely seen a great improvement since this class, I am so grateful for Prof Shawn!! Hardest grader I've ever come across, but well worth the mental anguish.
Those saying he's a tough grader didn't ever go to office hours, he's really specific on what he's looking for in each of your papers so go to office hours at least twice for each paper with a draft in hand and specific questions in mind and he'll tell you exactly what to do to get a good grade, super nice and helpful if you put in the effort
Professor Shawn is an extremely nice guy that cares about his students. There are three major research papers done for class, each with multiple deadline due dates to enforce consistent research. However, he's a very good teacher, gives great feedback, but is a tough grader, so make sure you spend time researching for your paper
Great prof, very insightful and helpful. He makes you work for it though. Go to office hours and talk to him about your papers, and he will help you so much. Do the readings because they are relevant. As for all WR150 classes, attendance is mandatory.
He gives good feedback on papers (make sure you go to his office hours with your drafts!) and was consistent with grading and expectations. He appreciates people that speak up in class, but have your opinions ready at all times (he just calls on people sometimes when no one volunteers). Nothing is inherently "wrong" to him if you can defend it
DR. Shawn's class definitely improves your ability to write and speak. There are lots of fun activities and you get to watch a lot of good films. Dr. Shawn is a very knowledgeable and outstanding professor. He listens to you and cares about your problems. Even if you do not have an A+ paper he recognizes your efforts. Would take again.
Both a phenomenal teacher and person. He goes out of his way to engage students during class and drum up conversation which might not be so much fun if you didn't do any of the reading, but for a motivated student it's fantastic. Grading isn't easy but it's fair and he's more than willing to help you improve over the semester from a B to an A.
I personally loved Shawn and made sure to take his class again. He is caring and reasonable. The reason the class was hard for me was because it is a writing class and writing is definitely not my forte. He acknowledges hard work. His grading is quite fair and he is super thoughtful. There are 3 main essays and a couple small things that are graded
Amazing. Dude is kind, understanding, and empathetic of student situations, especially with being online. He makes himself available and really cares about helping students. His interest in our projects and his drive to motivate us to do well are clear. Take a class with him if you can.
Prof Shawn is literally the best teacher ever! He is so understanding, like when I got super sick he made sure to meet with my outside class to help me catch up and was so kind and understanding about it. He genuinely makes this class super fun! I would say it's a lot of work, but it is super engaging and not tedious and boring!
Prof Shawn reminds me of a squirrel. he is squirrely, very nervous like he needs to know if his students are enjoying his content or he will spontaneously combust. Prof Shawn is very nice but not very confident when he lectures. he has a B+ grading contract. And he makes the timeline of assignments really difficult to keep track of so be ready.
Good guy and nice but very hard grader. Uses a ridiculous B+ grading contract which is good if that's your goal but it makes it essentially impossible to get an A. Do not take if you want an A like I did.
I have never had a professor prevent students from getting an A as hard as Shawn. His grading contract is just meant to make B+ the highest grade you could earn, unless maybe you write a Pulitzer Prize winning essay.
Love Mr. Shawn, very passionate about his classes and makes earnest efforts to help you out when you might be struggling due to outside matters.
I think professor Shawn's class was very interesting. The class was not that much work and it was easy to use the smaller assignments to do the larger assignments. He does have a grading contract but the extra work to get above B+ is very easy.
Professor Shawn runs a tough but rewarding class. The B+ grading contract is challenging, but engaging lectures and hands-on activities make it worthwhile. Unstuckstudy proved a helpful tool for study prep.
Definitely a lot of reading for this class on Lincoln. There's a grading contract where assignments are mainly graded off completion for a B+. He is a really nice guy and going to office hours definitely helps. One thing that is kinda annoying though is that he doesn't really answer emails, so the only real way to talk to him is in person.
