Excellent, Best Teacher By Far at Trent, Absolutely No Complaints here
Advice, take as many classes as you can with this Prof, he's the best :-).
Smart Man, Helpful Man, ....................Excellent Prof
Class is great with Sheinin, should be given an award for best prof. Keep it Up!
Other Profs take a lesson from the best, right here, from Prof. Sheinin
Boring
Not enough structure for me!
Why can't more profs really teach like this guy does?
I can't learn by JUST reading... give me some structure!
Give me structure, boo hoo. Stop whining. Get working. Sheinin is amazing.
He doesn't teach! He hardly talks, only good if you don't like to attend classes

Every other Prof at Trent you want to STAB with a pencil, but NOT THIS ONE!!!!
Dont want to work hard? Stay clear of this course
I still don't know what he was doing there. I could have just as easily learned these things at home with a library card. I cannot believe that this man is being paid to listen to us. I even caught him taking a nap during one of the presentaions.
Lots and Lots of work....But glad I took his course. One of my proudest acomplishments was getting through his course.
A+ in all ways!!!! Don't miss a course with Sheinin

Great Guy
I cannot imagine how this man still has a job. I have never seen a teacher who never, ever teaches.

What a bunch of cry babies you guys are. I just graduated last year and still believe that Sheinin is the best thing going at Trent. Hey "D" if your reading this you know who it was from. Prof. Schwietzer is the one you need to be complaining about. The guy makes you want to jump off a building.
This is excellence. This is what university should be.
I would have his babies if he wasn't already married with children... I LOVE the sheinin!
Quick, smart, great -- do this course, do yourself a favour. Excellent course, excellent man.
I bet he wears the fanny pack to hold all his extra SEXINESS!!!
Really nice guy. Helpful and easygoing. He is definitly hot. I enjoyed his classes
Knows a lot, very fair and helpful, too bad he hates to teach. (BTW, the University of Connecticut is VERY 80s...lose the sweats!)
a very good professor
The man from another planet...
what is the matter with all you people? the man is a spaced out, horrible teacher. yeah, maybe he's easy. but it would be nice if he helped a bit. but his laziness would interfer. what a great university experience.
Let me guess... Just get your test back today?

boring class, boring prof
He was average
complete arrogant ****...seems really intelligent, but didnt teach...essays take him too long to mark and he assigned presentations instead of participation grades..was soo interested in taking this class, but ended up being a complete waste of time
I can't believe the whiners wimpering away about the class. This was great. Class was full of lazy guys unwilling to work

It was a decent class but he taught nothing and insisted in us using the text he wrote. A lot of it was self-taught. He's a nice guy, but that's about it!

Waste of time. Completely self-driven learning. Lectures form no coherent structure, year holds no coherent focus in theme or chronology. Definitely teaching as means rather than ends, of financing the books he peddles.
Very knowledgable but utterly uninspiring. Lectures were a complete snooze-fest, and seemed to be thrown together at the last moment without any regard to structure. Lectures were regularly cancelled, and there were no seminars for this class. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement.
Laziest professor I've ever had. Never comes to class, has no examinations, course is completely self taught. Marking structure is unfair, with 40% based on a group presentation, with a group mark which is not appropriate for a university course. Very unprofessional, learned nothing, left very frustrated that I paid approx. $1000 for his course.
Professor Sheinin is a terrific instructor. Those who have issues with his lecture style, have failed to put in a modicum of effort in the context of required readings. If you are interested in discovering how the world works, take this course.
Great class in all ways. Very serious.
I think the comments here are exagerated. Excellent profesor with lots of strenghts including lecturing style, the way he helps students, how he pressures us to work. Weaknesses are that this course is just too hard for a second year course.
This was by far the worst class I have taken. I literally learned nothing. He is obviously a very intelligent man, but lacks any sort of structure. Classes are continuously cancelled. Movies and presentations take up most of the classes that do occur. I am more than a little annoyed that I wasted $1000 to take this course.
I didn't learn anything from his course. He assigns novels to be read every 2 weeks or so and then we have discussions on them in class. Almost half the grade is based on this participation. I much rather have normal lectures complemented with fortnightly tutorials.
Best course at Trent because it teaches you to write. Too much reading.
Hey Moron... A novel is a work of fiction
So boring and slow.
Sheinin is a wicked professor. He marks pretty tough but motivates you a lot to work. He forces you to rethink your arguments.
Professor Sheinin is an extremely knowledgeable man with lots to offer academically. If you have difficulty writing in a coherent fashion, take this class and engage with him (as intimidating as it is). However, Do not take this class if you're sensitive. He is blunt and it hurts. There are other professors who are equally as good and are nurturing
I was shocked when I started. This is the toughest guy I've seen at Trent. But I can't believe how much hes helped me. About 2 hours on the phone one afternoon, and more after class next day on my first essay. thank you
I found Professor Sheinin to be VERY unhelpful, and not a very nice person. He expects his course to be your priority during the term, but does not treat his students as his priority. A very smart man who should have looked into a different career.
I totally disagree with the last review. There is a crowd of lazy complainers who just don't want to do the work. Sheinin is always available and willing to meet with students. I've learned more in 2 months than in my previous year at Trent. Try saying thank you and not whining.
I disagree with the comment stating that Sheinin was not helpful. I took his course a couple of years ago. I was not the greatest student but he helped me a lot. Another career? Have you looked at his CV? He actually publishes, unlike a mass of profs at that university. And as far as nurturing goes, that is not his job. Go to Oprah!
He's a fair marker, but the class is taught almost entirely by students with group presentations and essays making up the entire course. I didn't pay $1200 to be taught by students.
Too bad the Trent culture fosters the sort of bitterness and mediocrity in the last comment. Sheinin's work speaks for itself. I wouldn't even be here if it weren't for his work with me
As a professor for a subject with "Introduction" in it's title he does a poor job of teaching it. He gives you no background information and teaches you very little if you opted for the essay over the participation grade. I have no idea how helpful he is for the participation students but for the rest he seems to only critique, never teach.
Awful class. It's taught by students NOT the prof, which is scary when you realise a student could FAIL his presentation, and therefore "teach" you wrong information. If you opt for the 3rd essay you teach yourself everything.Would have been a good reading course but I expected to be taught by a professor not fellow students. Complete waste of money.
Amazing class. Took time to talk to me for two hours after my first essay. Wow. Sheinin rocks
bEST teacher at this university. Makes history intresting for once.
Best professor at Trent. To those who complain- Trent has done you a great disservice by brainwashing you into believing that a good teacher is someone who coddles you and caters to your every need. If you're interested in learning and getting the most out of your experience at Trent, take one of Sheinin's classes. Other classes waste your time.
Very helpful, very intelligent. Little unorthodox class style, but well worth taking if you're willing to try it. The only thing I'd like is a little bit more feedback on the essays. Still, no question, this guy is a great prof.
Attended one class all year - the first one. Passed with a 85%. Took "Option B" which consisted of producing 3 essays (4pg, 8pg, 15pg) and turning them in electronically by a given deadline. He most likely has no idea who I am. Tight schedule? hate lectures/exams? do this class. but yeah, he's a pretty absentee prof.
Among top 3 profs I've had at Trent. I'm surprised at the complaints about feedback. I got a bad mark on my first essay. Sheinin was all over it. I met with him 4 or 5 terms during the year and he is the only one who made a difference in improving my writing. Great course.
Very intelligent man who clearly has no desire to teach. Course is entirely self taught. He proved he is VERY knowledgeable about the subject, he just has no interest in teaching any of it Perhaps one of the smartest people at Trent, definitely the worst professor. On the bright side, only 1 mandatory class, and a very fair marker.
this guys an amazing lecturer. I dont even know what the last comment means. I took 211. Sheinin doesnt even teach it. youve got the wrong prof einstein!
Very unimpressed. Lectures were useless - very boring and often the subject matter was not included in tests. Evaluation from tests were very unfair. Given a single essay question based off the large amount of readings and expected to write it in under an hour. Might as well have taken a correspondence course.
Amazing class. Prof sets high standards and sticks to them. If people didnt do the work Sheinin called them on it in class. Didt let them go on and on about nothing. Intimidating at first but i learnd a lot.
The best prof. Doesn't expect you to come to class in the middle of march when everything is due. Helps you with any questions. So intelligent it makes you feel intimidated
Amazing prof! Speaks with authority and great style! Take this class
Great prof, willing to help at any time, course was very interesting
Easily the worst professor I have had at Trent. You only have two assignments that are worth 100% of your mark and the guidelines are extremely unclear, there is literally no rubric to be followed, his marks come from his head and he does not explain his marking system. His lectures are hard to follow and you feel like you learned nothing after.
If you want to sleep through your class and float through your assignments, don't take this course. Sheinin is tough, serious, and demanding. But you'll leave the class inspired and having learned a whole lot.
Terrible Professor, and a hard mark at that. Nothing in class was helpful in writing the term paper that is worth half the course
Thanks for a great class. first class I've taken when I've really learned something about professional writing. And bonus, a great sports history class.
Useless professor. I am in University to learn and expand my knowledge, however he refuses to give feedback and requests you to write papers that have no rubric. My feedback from him for my paper was void of any useful feedback, and was completely rude, offensive, and borderline insulting. No tips, just completely demeaning and condescending.
This professor is by far the most two-faced man I have ever met. He says he will be happy to provide feedback on your assignments but the feedback is not constructive. He is very pretentious and rude in his wordings, and is very insulting. He only has two major essays, one worth 25% due in the first 3 weeks and another worth 45%.
I have never gotten such bad grades in a course. He is pretentious and expects your writing to be way beyond a second year university level. His comments on my essay were just rude and didn't offer any criticism to help me improve my writing. Says in his syllabus you can ask for help to find sources for a paper but would not give me help when asked
David was super intimidating in lecture. He is fully aware that he is an expert in his field. His essay topics are self-determined but he is super helpful if you can't pick a topic. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS he is so helpful and less intimidating one on one. You will get better results out of the class if you go to his office. One essay was worth 45%.
Would never take again. He clearly misunderstands the fact that teaching should help students and is so convinced he is right all the time that he can't help anyone. Huge disappointment and really turned me off the field.
I did not like him at all. He knows he is smart and because of that comes off as arrogant and rude. He does not actually teach you; you do presentations. I did not learn much other than to not rely on him for actual feedback. Do not recommend him at all. It was an interesting class, but I would have liked it if he actually taught us.
I regret not dropping out earlier like my friend did, made me dislike a subject I love.
Sheinin is one of the worst professors both me and my friends have ever had. He is extremely rude when students ask for clarification and demeaning when giving notes on presentations. He will make you hate your major. He is one of the best examples of just because you know your information does not mean you should be a prof. Would give a zero.
I learned a lot in this class. Wish there was more like it.
A lot of work. But it's the first course I took that incorporated class presentations. Got good at them. You leave the course feeling good about what you've learned and about your writing.
Somewhat intimidating but great sense of humour once u get to know him. Lots of surprise bonus marks available which made a big difference. Was willing to read draft parts of my essay before I had to turn it in. Hard course
Not an easy class. Also don't take it if you don't have a thick skin. This is baseically a class where the prof trains you to do strong presentations and works with you extensively on your writing and analysis. If you want to sleep through it, stay away. If you want to take a class and get something out of university, this is for you.
Why did Trent jump around from Zoom to in class? Crazy. But Sheinin rules.
He assigns one 5000 word paper for the entire semester but its due 2 months before the end of classes. Not the hardest class at Trent but if you put in the work, and participate, your grade will show for it.
prof promises to deliver improved skills in writing, researching and public speaking. it's in the syllabus. i like it because the course does just that. plus prof has an excellent knowledge of sports in many places around the world
Take this course (Politics of Sports) if you want a free grade that reflects 100% on your effort. Other than that not much was taken from this course. Group presentations were the lecture and very inconsistent grading.
Thre was a lot of opportunity to do well in this course, but it's work. Lots of bonus marks, inlcuding the chance to write a blog post. The prof said the course can be assessed on whether our skills improve. Mine did, which I haven't seen a lot of in my other classes. I recommend it.
Learned quite a bit from this class and enjoyed taking it.
I thought I deserved a bit higher mark. But I liked the course a lot. Smart man
I had some trouble getting going in this course. Don't take it if you dont plan to attend. He says he'll help students with writing and presenting and he did. I appreciate that and am taking another course with him this year.
Good course. Wish there was more on Mexico, but ok. Handled masking and COVID well.
I never did presentations before in a class. Wasnt sure I'd like this course plus the prof gives critical responses on the presentations. But it worked well. Glad I took the course.
I had stress from the presentation but the prof helped a lot.
This is like a different world from first year. David comes across tough but is very quick in getting back to us and is super helpful outside class in chosing essay topics, presentation work, and other things.
Great teacher bla bla.I really liked this course. Learned a lot about sports. Not woke.
I almost dropped the course but I'm glad I kept it. This is the first course at Trent that taught me how to do a presentation and I learned quite a lot about writing. Thank you.
This is the best course at Trent for learning how to do good research and write properly. This is the first time a professor took me through my written essays to show me exactly where to improve and how to improve. Thank you.
Dude promises that students will get better as writers, researchers, presenters, and so on. He delivers. The course is tough and you have to have a tough skin. He tells it like it is. I found it worth it.
A challenging but rewarding course. The professor has high expectations, but provides helpful guidance. Leveraging tools like Unstuck AI alongside the free course materials really helped me stay on top of the work. Overall, I'm glad I took this course and would recommend it.
I took this course because of reviews on rate professor that said the prof was great at emphasizing writing research and presentation skills. I wasn't disappointed. That's exactly what he did and while it was a lot of work, my mark was higher than I usually get.
I really love the class style, and the assignments were my strong suits. I never took a U.S history course and thought it would be interesting. I struggled with the content without a lot of previous knowledge on the topics. The readings and group work really helped. I struggled on the essay. But it was a great experience and I learned a lot.
I should have had a better mark. AI helped on the second essay.
Amazing prof always available to students
Good course and I was doing very well. But hte prof is a hard ax. The big assignment was due in October. I forgot about it and after, I asked him if I could turn it in anyway. The answer was no. No negotiation. I had to drop. If you take the course, come ready to work way hard
