David Sheridan is great. He's young, witty, and a pleasure to have a class with. Very understanding when it comes to circumstances outside the classroom. There is a lot of reading, but most of it is pretty interesting. Very cool guy. Would definitely take him again.
Good lecturer, expectations are high but not unachievable. To get an A students must have well developed, quality analysis in their papers and come to class consistently. Overall a great experience.
He is an awesome professor. There are 3 tests, and 2 papers. His lectures are mainly powerpoint. Watched a lot of movie/tv/do****clips to help understand. The tests are pretty easy, and gives study guides before hand. Class is manadatory. I wish he taugh the capstone.
Cool teacher, he knows his stuff and is personable. However I felt the class needed a general textbook. It's very lecture based and if you miss too many classes, you will suffer on tests.
This was the second class I have taken with David Sheridan, and once again, I'm glad I did. The class consists of about four book reviews an in-class midterm and take home final. He's a great guy that knows a ton about European History (especially Britain), and he's very helpful. I hope to take a class with him again sometime in the future.
This class is pretty straightforward. Show up, take notes, and you'll be fine. Not really necessary to read the textbook. There are quizzes on three novels, but they're not hard at all if you read the books. Only required to be present on quiz or test days. Midterm and final have essay questions which are kind of hard. Pretty cool guy.
everyday you take around 3 to 4 pages of notes. hes very talkative. the class is interesting and the novels arent that bad. long essays for midterm and final, mostly about analyzing the larger picture
Great prof, knows what he's talking about! Classes are very consistent. Lots of notes in class, but no homework outside of class. Only 2 papers based on fairly interesting novels. One mid-term & a final. Takes attendance sporadically. I loved this class & I would recommend/ take D. Sheridan again.
DR. Sheridan is a cool guy. Their was 3 quizzes based on novels, a midterm and a final. You take a lot of notes, but overall his class was easy.
I took this class last semester and I seriously loved this class. He was really cool and really knows what he's talking about. However he expects you not to know facts per say but the big picture and significance. He isn't huge on dates at all but the meanings. Midterm/Final has long essays and multiple choice. Definitely would take him again.
I agree - lots of notes. Keep up and you'll do fine. No tricks. He made history accessible and managed to focus on events that I had not previously studied in depth. My one negative: a realllly expensive textbook that I never used.
never had to read the textbook(there maybe 1 or 2 questions on the tests based on reading). I suggest you bring a voice recorder b/c he talks really fast. gives very interesting lectures. FOCUS on significance especially when studying for exams. A very reasonable grader.
Class was not overly difficult, just essay type tests. Have to read three novels assigned and get graded on them as well as group discussions. Sometime class is really a drag and a lot of notes, but there are times we watch movies =)
Excellent Professor. Really wants to emphasize class discussion aka "the class circle". Makes everyone lead discussion, but its not difficult. Discussion is more interesting than constant lectures. Fair grader, always willing to help you out.
besides the points that he is extremely unorganized and that methodology sucks, he makes the class slightly fun. he does assign readings. do them. there are class discussions and journal entries you have to write. the workload isn't impossible, but the end of course essay is a pain as you have to have an original argument. otherwise: decent class.
Easy class. Only real problem is he talks SO FAST and his lectures tend to overload you with information....so be ready to take A LOT of notes. Can be moody at times, but he's chill for the most part and grades relatively easy. Textbook is unncessary.
He talks really really fast and you take ALOT of notes
he talks fast but youll be able to understand we need about 4 books and each had a quiz which where very easy if you read. two midterms one with writing portions which he gives the prompts to before good teacher very willing to help if you talk to him very nice guy
Like everyone said, he talks pretty fast compared to other professors on campus. But he really knows his stuff! He's pretty funny too from time to time and quite enthusiastic during his lectures. Great professor! I'd take him again if I could (:
talks VERY fast, best to type the notes, makes you read 3 novels (boring and long) + quizzes on them w/o study guides. His midterms and final study guides do NOT help at all. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Good professor, very good information and uses a thematic approach. Lots of people find it a little harder to think thematically so to some its a little hard. You read 5-7 books a semester. Reading can get a little cramped toward the end. overall good professor. fair grader through and through. will help if you ask.
I never liked history, but he made it interesting. Write down everything he says, because even the little details you think are easy to remember or unimportant, they end up showing up on the tests or quizzes. Just pay attention and try, because if you do, you'll most likely do good.
Very sweet and his mannerisms are immensely cute. Show up to class, heed his lecture and you'll be fine. His midterm is to the point and if you studied his study guide, you're going to do well.
Early Modern Europe with Sheridan was fun! Yes: gratuitous amount of reading. Did I learn? Yes. The monographs were hit and miss. He is willing to help if you ask. Don't listen to the HIST 172 noobs that slander Sheridan, he is worth taking if you want to learn. His tests are to the point and thematic. Take his classes, think THEMATICALLY.
good teacher we did have to read a about 3 books but they werent hard to read. he uses power point so while he talks u can copy everything off the slide which makes everything easier. take notes on everything hes says becuase it will be on the test. about 4 or 5 test with essays on them and the final i believe has two essays.
You have to be in class, because he does powerpoint notes and does not post online and checks attendance. awesome class. easy as pie if you pay attention.
Lectures are lengthy and can get pretty boring but we do watch film clips here and there. There are 3 books we had to read (a diary, monogram, and novel). If you don't like reading, suck it up! You're in college now. Easy A if you pay attention and TRY :D 1 essay, 2 reading quizzes, 2 midterms and a final! Take him!
Not a bad teacher. Uses PowerPoint every single class which is good and bad. Good because you can take notes easily, but bad because none of it is on the test. Forget the slide show and take notes on EVERYTHING he says. Test questions are extremely focused on small details. Easy if you take notes on every little thing and study.
Yeah, Sheridan talks WAAAAYYYY fast and its tough to follow every word...but he's the nicest prof on campus. He is down to earth and his sarcasm is super funny. Theres a midterm, a final, and you have to read 3 books (2 of them you write essays on and one is a reading quiz). Make sure you read the whole book for the quiz because its worth a LOT
everything everyone else said..hard grader than expected. strict with the essays. condescending at first. got cooler as the semester passed
People who complain are stupid. If you listen to his lectures and actually study, then you'll do well on the tests. Read the books and put post-it notes on key parts because you can look in it for book quizzes. He is really sarcastic and funny and I actually learned and remembered history unlike with other professors. I'd take his class ANY day.
If you are a lazy student, Sheridan is not the teacher for you. Actually, COLLEGE is not for you. Dr. Sheridan is a great teacher. Very thorough and articulate. I learned more about American history in his course than my entire time in K-12 school. No homework, just exams and a few books. Take him if you can.
This professor knows his history. He does, however, talk a bit fast. He is willing to help the students and is a very nice man. It consisted on 2 quiz, 2 midterms, 1 paper, and a final.
Sheridan talks fast but I learned a lot from his style. He's also sarcastic sometimes, which is funny. You take a lot of notes per class, so absence is not recommended. There's 2 midterms, one w/ an essay; a final w/ 2 essays, a 1 page paper, and 2 reading quizzes. I recommend this class and professor.
Teacher talks too fast to write notes & powerpoints ar not accessible! Not an easy A! Will use textbook. 2 midterms & final. 1st exam- m/c only; 2nd- m/c with 1 essay; final- m/c with 2essays. Provides several essay ?'s in study guide. HW- 2 books ~200pgs each & a 3-5pg essay paper for 1 of the books. Short answer ? quizes for each book.
Yes, he talks fast. Yes, you will actually have to work to get an A. The readings are boring (in my opinion) but if you just read then they're easy points. He has all main points in his PowerPoints but he says so much more - take good notes. Likes essays. Doesn't want info recited, he wants analysis - "how would things be different if" things.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but taking notes in class is a must! He makes history interesting! He has study guides too. If you're not into history, paying attention will be hard. He's clear and tends to repeat things to make sure you get it. Overall, good class for an easy GE.
Teacher talks too quickly; I suggest everyone share notes and readings from the actual textbook are unnecessary. Just listen in class or study his lecture notes!
Dr. Sheridan is an okay teacher overall. He talks way too fast and rushed through the lectures most of the time. He takes roll so attendance is a must. It's almost impossible to get an A in this class! Take it from someone who is a 4.0 student. He is a great professor overall. Tests aren't too bad. NO TEXTBOOK needed!
There is a moderate level of writing in this class and a lot of reading. He does not make dates, names, and places center pieces of his lectures although, one should know them. His classes deal with connections between events, analyses of those events, and their causal relationships. As college level classes go this class is easy. Just read.
He is such a good history teacher! I was always so interested, he makes history interesting! Take him, you do not really need the textbook but just the two books he requires which you really do not need to read a lot. Theres really no homework besides one essay and study for the 2 midterms and one quiz, which are easy. Then just a final.
Very happy that I decided to take this course with this professor. Some of the material is dry but he tries to make it more interesting with his use of film. Had to take 3 midterms, 1 essay, and 1 quiz. I would take this course again with this professor in an instant.
This class was okay there was a lot of note taking.2 exams and 1 final. I reading quiz and one essay paper. 2 books to read. The professor is nice and tries to make the topics interesting.
Very understanding towards the many non-history majors in the class. A lot of freedom in terms of the writings and ample time to write them. I feel like he gave so much freedom, that many students (including myself) left all our writings to the end -- not a good idea! The books he assigned were all good reads. I really enjoyed this class!
The class is not completely easy, there is a lot of reading and class discussions. There are two papers, midterm and final. Great class, Great Professor. I would take another class with him.
Sheridan is down to earth. He does his best to help you. Attendance is mandatory and he's honest when it comes to grading. He clarifies on what it is you need to work on. He's a great instructor that wont put you to sleep.
David is honestly one of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He is excellent at facilitating engaging discussions. Also, he is always available and happy to oblige if you need more help in office hours (not to mention he easy to approach). He will do what it takes to help YOU succeed as long as YOU are willing to work.
Moderately cool dude. Very respectful of all individuals and ideas. Pretty funny sometimes. Lectures are powerpoint based, so if you fall asleep in class everyday you're gonna have a hard time. He's horrible at responding to e-mails.
I HATED history and ended up w/ an A. If try you best & go to office hours when necessary, your grade will be reasonable. He tries his best to be clear on expectations so students understand. I dreaded the thought of in-class essays but you learn to deal & it isn't so bad after all. Plus, He gives clear study guides for each exam.
Requires you to read two books outside of the text; 2 essays, 2 exams. His powerpoints give great information but he also says some essential info for his test (if you ask him to repeat he will several times). I only got a C because I didn't go to class much; if I had I would have gotten a B.
Teaches this class with ZERO ego. Wants to learn from the students just as much as he wants to teach. Never thought I'd be interested in women's history, but he definitely has a talent for shaping his approach in a way that piques your interest. Doesn't read off a powerpoint slide, but rather goes beyond in trying to convey the main theme to you.
Such an amazing professor! Couldnt have asked for a better teachermentor in the history dept. Easy lower division with fun lectures and decent tests. Phenomenal upper divisions as well. He goes in depth and explains everything very clearly and is an awesome and caring teacher.
Dr. Sheridan was an amazing teacher and mentor in and out of class. His passion and knowledge of the subject is palpable and his desire to help every student is clear. If you meet him half way in any class he will do whatever he can to help you succeed. Not the most organized person but that only accentuates his brilliance.
All he does is talk talk talk. He talks so fast you can't even writetype anything down. His ppts are only outlines for the lectures. Tests are based off lectures. So if you don't attend class, you miss lectures, you miss lectures, you don't pass his tests, you don't pass his tests, you fail. Class is only as good as the professor teaching it.
Straight up, honest, and helpful. Not an easy A, but a great person to learn from.
to be honest, this class is not an easy A class. hefty reading, but really interesting. his lectures are amazing. 2 book reviews, few quizzes, midterm and a final. id strongly recommend david!
Dr. Sheridan is a great person. However, his lectures are painfully long and there are pages and pages of notes every day. He makes you write the outline for notes but never tells you which bullet point he's on. I strongly suggest bringing a laptop AND recording the lecture on word. 3 books to read. one paper. two reading quizzes. 3 midterms.
Would not take again. He takes forever to grade tests and quizzes even though he promises to post them up. Lectures are really long and he goes way into depth in all of the bullet points, which makes it impossible to even type it all down. Nitpicky questions on tests but makes you think thematically, which is nice
Teaches his courses thematically which is easy to follow for a upper division course. Assigned 5 books but only write on 2. In class midterm. Take home final. Uses movie clips for visual aid. Tough on grades but approachable and understanding. Knowledgeable about European history and lectures are funny. no textbook required.
This was pretty interesting as far as a history class goes. His lectures are interesting and goes beyond just giving you the information. He's very clear about what you need to do in the class and doesn't try to make it harder. Easy A. Also makes himself available when you need help. He came into his office twice just to help me study.
His lectures are super long and he sometimes rants. He is very slow on posting quiz an test scores. This class is way too tedious for a 100 level class and he grades very tough.
Assigns interesting but long readings. This is an essay based lass. If you enjoy thinking outside the box and are pretty good at writing essays, this class should be good for you. If you're just taking this as a GE and are not curious about history, do not take this class. Dr. Sheridan is helpful; just ask whenever you need specifications.
The people in my class struggled. I aced every assignment in this class. This is college now, and students have to know that. No class should be taken lightly. As for Dr. Sheridan- I thought he was extremely respectful, intelligent, and always there for you. As long as you do his assignments and listen to what he says, it's a VERY fair & easy class
This was not an easy upper division course but Dr. Sheridan made it hilarious. He is very straight forward in what students expect to learn. 6 books to read but only write on 2. In class midterm take home final. Participate in discussions and you get credit. His rants are funny especially about Mussolini. Highly recommend. No textbook.
Make sure you actually read and understand the two books you take quizzes on or else you'll fail them. His lectures are long and boring but his rants and side comments are funny and make it a little more interesting. Midterms are easy if you study the ID's and essays. Study study study for the final.
Honestly If you show effort he will help you out. He's a good teacher and y0u can tell he really loves what he does, do not underestimate this class it is difficult but study the study guides and you will get a B only one paper the entire class but showing up for lectures is a must. He's a great professor.
2 Exams, 2 quizzes, &1 final. Exams are mostly based on lectures. I never bought the book& got a B. Quizzes are on 2 novels, I didn't read either, but looked up both & got Bs. Exam 1 mostly mult choice and some IDs, Exam 2- less mult choice, IDs and 1 essay, Final- little multiple choice, some IDs, & 2 essays. Essays are EASY!!
He is a hard grader and its not and easy A. You will have to work hard to pass with an A. His lectures are interesting but he isn't the best at explaining them. You will have to read a lot of novels. 4 textbooks required. He is a very nice guy though.
If I had the opportunity to take Sheridan again, I would. He is passionate about history and cares that you understand. He can be a tough grader, but talk to him and he'll help you. The class I was in retained everyone who started in the class. That says a lot! He has good candor with the class. Just make sure you do the reading and participate.
Quizzes on novels you have to read, 1 community project, 1 group project, 4 novels, a few quizzes, no homework. Overall, pretty easy.
He is a very good professor and I would have loved the class if it was not history. Pretty straightforward and he lets you make QUICK cheat sheets for test if you are lucky. His lectures are pretty laid back and easy to follow.
Personaly, I like him. He's sarcastic so thats always interesting. He does expect you to read and be able to discuss the readings. Hes not to harsh but he can tell when you dont do your work. He's helpful and understanding if stuff comes up. Hes not too easy but he wont make you want to skip class.
He is a great professor, incredibly level headed, sarcastic at times and very understanding. However, you must attend class he notices when you do miss. The books he has you read are very interesting and downright fun.
Exam grading took OVER A Month. Tremendous amount of reading, no slides uploaded must be present in class. Tests are difficult and study guides are vague. However, he has a clear voice and gives you time to take notes. Lots of films and book readings. 100s of pages assigned of reading.
David cares about his students as long as the students try to do their best. This course was an excellent introduction to History as a major. He was very inspirational and presented himself as the course leader. His teaching style and passion for history made me strive to become a better student. I would urge you to take any class of his.
great teacher, lectures a lot but makes it very interesting and worth your while! if you study you definitely will do fine!
Sheridan is an awesome professor. This class is not an easy A but he really made me interested in this subject and I absolutely hate history. Attendance is not required but notes on lectures are important and if you don't take them you will not get another chance. Lectures are heavy. No homework. 2 midterms, 1 paper, 1 book quiz, 1 final. Recommend
Takes over a month to grade. No online powerpoints must be in class taking notes. Tests are very difficult in terms of the tremendous amount of information needed to be memorized. Three different books are needed, dont take if you're broke. Don't take if you don't have a laptop to type notes he speaks too fast sometimes and you miss notes
Does not grade your exams and assignments in a timely matter. Have waited over a month for first midterm grade. Some are taking the final without knowing their second midterm grade. Very irresponsible professor. Very minimal notes on the slides. Slow email response. History department what is wrong with you...
Dr. Sheridan is a great teacher and quite obviously cares about his students and what they learn. Content is looked at thematically and you can see how fundamental it is to understanding our modern world. If you ever need any clarification or extra information, he's always there. 1 complaint: I couldn't read his writing if my life depended on it.
Clear and concise. Not an easy A, you have to do the work, but well worth it. One of the best professors you will ever take. And not bad looking either...
Dr. Sheridan is the best. The thing that makes him so great is he is passionate about what he teaches and he really cares about the students. He is not easy but he pushes you to be better.
great professor, great humor. he literally made history fun for me and although his lectures are long he makes them so interesting. sometimes you have to read but it's worth it. if you study, you'll do good. would love to take this class again.
I hate history but his class was easy! He makes sure to go in detail which makes his lectures boring. You DO need a textbook for exams, esp for his SG's. His exams are more based on the textbook than the lecture, lecture concepts are still on exams. Two novels you have to read, essay on one, quiz on both. He makes jokes but there not funny. DOPE
Going to class definitely helps although not mandatory, he even says it on the first day. All classes are of just powerpoints, but he'll add his own commentary. Overall he's funny and chill and there for whenever you need help and have a question after class.
Dr. Sheridan is an excellent lecturer. I was always wide awake during class. He didn't make it boring for me. Better show up to class & take notes --this will be the way you'll pass. Getting an A isn't impossible, just make sure you take really good notes. Yeah, he takes a while to grade things, but he isn't as horrible as people think.
Dr. Sheridan is a great professor because of his dedication to his students. He is always encouraging students to think deeper and to be their best. He can also be a great mentor. This class was a 3 hour class, but he was able to make it fun- I actually looked forward to going to a 3 hour class. Read and give a strong effort and you'll be fine.
Dr. Sheridan is an amazing professor. He is super smart and cares about how he teaches. His classes are interesting but they also make you think. David cares about his students and is always willing to talk. His classes are not the easiest but he makes you think more deeply and you learn a lot in class. He is also hilarious.
Was not that many assignments. One of those classes where if you had a friend you did not have to show up to every class but I do not advise missing every class.
Hardest class I ever had. Really tough grader, lots of reading, exams were lengthy. I had to work very hard to get an A. He has HEAVY lectures, I advise to bring a laptop. Cancels classes often. However, he is very funny and really knows his history. He makes you think deeper and look at the bigger picture. You looked forward to his classes.
Super unorganized and rarely responds to emails, even ones asking for help or clarification. Can be pretty rude too. He knows a lot about theory and he can explain it well but his lack of organization ruined it for me. There is a ridiculous amount of reading too. Way more than necessary. He's also a super hard grader but you can't read his feedback
Dr. Sheridan is the best professor I've ever had at CSULB. He is so wise and knowledgeable about History. Dr. Sheridan is always willing talk and offer support and mentoring. His classes are great. He always pushes you do your best and is encouraging, which is what makes him such a great professor. Take a class with him, you won't regret it.
Takes a really long time to input things on BeachBoard. Is accessible outside of class and is pretty funny but his lectures are so long and he talks pretty fast, would totally suggest bringing a laptop to keep up. Made us buy an online textbook yet we hardly ever used it.
It's mostly all lectures and note-taking. You take 3 midterms and a final, read 2 books, one paper, two quizzes... But Sheridan knows his History and I found his class to be one of my favorites. He keeps it interesting and informative. Would take him again!
He was the best professor I have ever had. He knows history and he makes it very fun to learn. Not once was I begging for it to be over because I was so into his class. The tests are a little tough so make sure to study. You read two books and get to choose which book you want to write the paper on. Overall, I loved Prof. Sheridan.
He's cool & funny, but his grading is messed up. He was SUPPOSED to grade over 10 things but ended up only grading 3 things & giving us our grades based on those 3 assignments! :( I got great scores in the class but on those 3 assignments, I got my lowest scores (still passing scores) but it wasn't enough to give me the A I rightfully deserved.
3 Sheridan. Took 2 classes. If ur a history major u should take him. He will challenge u to improve urself. If ur not a hist major take an easier class. Tons of reading (good books) and his lectures are long but hes super funny. Always late grading papers but u can just harass him to do it. Always forgets to email back- go to office hours instead.
Dr. Sheridan is an amazing professor who actually cares about what he is teaching and only wants his students to leave class smarter. One paper. Reading quizzes, midterm and final were a bit difficult if you don't do the readings (there's no textbook, just 4-5 small, cheap books). Overall, I found myself wanting to go to his class, and thats great!
Sheridan is an exceptional professor & I would not have passed 302 without him being my professor. He cares about his students & wants you to pass, but you have to be willing to work for it. If you don't read it's really hard to keep up. He appreciates participation, so make sure you do! I would definitely take a class with him again if I could.
Sheridan is a tough grader and in each exam, the essay portion grows more and more. For the final, we had to write 3 essays, 2 IDs, and there was a multiple choice section. Doesn't post the powerpoint online and expects you to take very detailed notes. Go to class
TAKE HIS CLASSES. He is caring, funny, and teaches history in an interesting way. Very lecture heavy so take notes; he tends to talk fast so typing notes is easiest. Does not upload any powerpoints on BB. Three novels (cheap) and one online textbook (free). Three book quizzes that are multiple choice and done in groups. One midterm and one final.
Maaaan it's just a history class and the amount of work needed for this class is just not understandable. Three novels, two midterms, 2 quizzes, a critical paper, and final. Grades very hard on your tests and doesn't post ppt so u have to show up to class. Assignments not graded promptly. But if u actually read and study for tests, u good. GL! ez B
Took forever to grade assignments. Grading criteria is unclear for essays (Got a better grade on the essay I BSed).
Professor is caring and accessible. The material is kinda dry but Sheridan does a good job explaining it. It takes him a couple weeks to get things grades so don't expect to see your grades until the very end of class. Kinda reading heavy with 3 novels and some textbook reading but overall not too bad. Highly recommend.
Passionate about history/teaching. A LOT of class discussion/participation. A few major readings/papers. Leniency with deadlines on papers, but you must have thorough knowledge of readings before class. Extensive mid-term/final. You will miss a ton of pertinent information if you do not attend. Bare minimum use of BeachBoard.
Sheridan is a great professor! His lectures are very informative and prepare you well for the midterms/final, in addition to the detailed study guides. There are three novels to read and a paper on one of them, you have to stay on top of them to avoid falling behind! He also lets you use notes of some kind on all the major exams. Great for GE cred!
He's not so great about posting assignments, sometimes only posting them the night before they're due, but if you keep up with the reading you'll be okay. Content is really interesting and he's willing to work with you if you're having trouble. I had an emergency and missed deadline for final paper. He gave me an extension without taking off points
5 monographs you choose 2 to write, you also get one 72-hour extension. The standard mid-term and take-home final is assigned. As far as lectures, he really gets into it and adds some humor at times. Accessible during office hours. Overall, I would definitely recommend Dr. Sherdian fair grader.
Attendance is not mandatory, but he does not upload the notes online. His lectures are very heavy & you have to be paying attention the whole time. He provides the textbook. The class is easy if you go to class, take notes & read all 3 books. He tests you on those books & you have to write an essay on 1 of them. Great professor! He knows a lot.
If you are looking at this review and wondering if taking David is a good idea, ease your mind- he is one of the best. I took three classes with him, and I enjoyed being in class and learning the class material. In any class with David, you will read and write a lot. But you will grow as a historian, writer, and all around thinker. Take his class!
Dr. Sheridan is awesome! I'm not even a history major, but showed up to every class because I liked it that much. He's super knowledgeable. If you are a history major, I'd definitely recommend. If you're just looking for a easy class - Sheridan will definitely make you work, but it's doable. Just show up and do what he asks.
He's a funny and nice professor. There are going to be times where he would sign pop quizzes. Overall, a good professor for History majors out there.
Took this class, didnt read the books assigned read the summarys and passed, all I could say is that going to lecture really matters for passing this class. Hes a great professor!
There are 2 midterms which are easy if you truly study the study guide. 3 quizzes based off of the 3 books you read outside of class (read them or you won't pass the quizzes). Participation is 5% and all you have to do is be present on the day of exams. As far as class goes it is mostly power point with a few videos. Boring but manageable.
Professor Sheridan is a great professor, class is lecture heavy; however he gives detailed study guides ! Also three exams including final, 3 novels which youre quizzed on, and a paper on one of them. He lets u use notes for the exams. Overall great professor very hilarious!
GREAT PROFESSOR! LECTURES COULD GET A LITTLE BORING BUT I LIKED HOW HE NEVER FAILED TO MENTION THAT THE USA IS GREAT. GRADE DEPENDS ON CHAPTER BOOK QUIZZES (3) AND 3 EXAMS.
Prof. Sheridan is a good professor, teaches clearly. He is balanced and can be pretty funny. Theres a bit of more reading than you might expect in a 100 level class, but its manageable. Interesting books and clear study guides.
Professor Sheridan's lectures are heavy, but really interesting. The notes you take help for all the exams. He provides a detailed study guide for each test and he really cares about people's grades. We read 3 books, 3 exams, and 1 paper. He also uses films in class, which helps understand topics more. He cares a lot and you will definitely learn!
Dr Sheridan is a caring, thoughtful professor. He teaches 330 thematically and it is a really intersting approach. The books are good and well-balanced. Most of all, he is a wonderful mentor and passionate about history and helping students.
Great professor, his lectures are content heavy but in no way are they boring. I missed a couple of classes and he was more than happy to help and very understanding about making up work you might have missed. He gives an extension for one writing assignment on a monograph of your choice! 10/10 would take again!
Sheridan is a fantastic professor. He does expect a lot - there is a lot of reading and the lectures are heavy content wise. However, he does a great job clarifying what you may need help with and if you put in the work, you will do just fine. Taking him again in the fall and I am so excited.
Dr. Sheridan is an amazing professor. His teaching style is refreshing, as he always makes us think thoughtfully about why history is taught in a certain way. His lectures are interesting and his jokes were always funny. Take good notes, listen during lecture, use his study guides, read all of the books. It's not as bad as it sounds. He's the best!
Clearly a very intelligent and capable professor, but he expects a lot. 6 week summer course and there were 3 novels and textbook reading, plus 4 discussion assignments, lots of audio lectures, an essay, reading quiz, and 2 writing heavy tests. Really brutal for a lower division course. If you work a lot, this is even more of a struggle.
I loved having DR. Sheridan for my HIST class! He is a super easy grader, I submitted a lot of papers I wasn't 100% proud of and never got anything lower than a 90 on anything. His online summer course is fast-paced, but easy to complete. You have to watch films and read three novels but he gives you the textbook so it's not more than $40 total!
Professor Sheridan is great at what he does. His lectures are great and allowed me to learn a lot about U.S. history. If you genuinely enjoy studying history, I would definitely recommend him. However, I struggled with his strict grading criteria, which was not expected in a lower division course.
Great professor, very kind and understanding. I enjoyed his lectures and that some weeks there was class and some days it was just recorded (to give a break from zoom). Only complaint, wish he would send out if zooms were happening early in week. Would send out past 11pm for an 8am class. Overall, great class and professor though.
One of my favorite professors I have ever had, wish I could take more courses with him because you will learn a lot. Lot of reading, (normal for the major) and I found the readings to be the most enjoyable of what I had in the semester. You will not regret taking any of his classes, he is above all very understanding. He is also hilarious
You wont regret taking him, you will learn a lot and he makes classes very enjoyable.
This class was kind of difficult in some parts. Dr. Sheridan is an amazing professor though, he's very passionate and insightful through his lectures. He gives 2 major tests (midterm and final) and 3 quizzes based on the 3 thematic books that he assigns.
David was a very fun Professor, made the class enjoyable. This is not a easy class, he will make you work for it. 5 Books to read, 2 Papers, 2 Quizzes and 2 Exams with multiple group discussions via smaller readings. He is a harsh grader, but will give amazing feedback on how to improve. Make the effort, easy to communicate with. Cares for students
I love Sheridan, he is such an amazing prof. 1 midterm, 3 thematic quizzes for the 3 books we read, 1 paper, and 1 final (take home). He is so understanding and will work with you no matter what. glad I took this class, love Sheridan Kingdom. Honestly, this 8 am was worth it. Lectures are recorded, participation is only mandatory on discussion days
Great professor! I had a rough start (got a C on the midterm :( ) but gradually improved and managed to get an A! Effort is a big part of how he grades so write as much as you can! 3 books, 3 quizzes on them, 1 midterm, 1 final, and 1 essay on either book. super interesting content, i actually learned some things!
Sheridan is a great professor and the books he assigns are not only relevant but interesting.
Professor Sheridan is one of my favorite Professors. He cares so much for his students and their success and it shows in how he gives feedback on papers. His lectures are very interesting and I learned a great deal about European history. He is also incredibly funny. Highly recommended for any students of History.
super easy class. 3 or four books required and all found for free online except last one. truly cares about students and the subject. make a discord gc and you will pass. group discussion assignments but they are easy. didn't read and i got a's on all of the quizzes.
Very kind professor and very intelligent. Really knowledgable about his work and for a Early United States History class that I was not looking forward to taking because I assumed it would be all old, boring information he had really great and new info I had never learned about as well as fun videos to go along with it. super respectful and nice
Rambles a lot. Grades kinda tough. 3 books you have to read, 1 paper, 3 tests + midterm and final. Gives you 5 days to do the final. You'll b fine if you go to lecture and take note I think.
Dr. Sheridan is by far the best History professor that I have had the chance of learning from. His lectures were concise and exciting and he was always able to demonstrate the key points from each time period in a very organized way. Expect to read about three books and write about them, and you will be set. Highly recommend this class!
this class was very lecture heavy, but the way he teaches was very eye-opening history. there are 3 short books you have to read and 3 quizzes/discussions on them. only have to write a 1-2 page paper on one of them. another 1-2 page paper on a couple of episodes on the Salem witch trials, midterms and finals. great class and would take again.
I had him for my 8 a.m. classes, twice a week. And you know what, I looked forward to them because he is a fantastic lecturer. The work is manageable, he reminds you when work is due, and I suggest to look back at his syllabus so you are on top of his assignments (papers).
amazing professor his lecture can be heavy yet very interesting. 3 books to read on which he will tell you which part you need to read and write a 1-2 page paper on it. he can be very hilarious and throw some fun facts which makes the class fun. just do the paper early if you can. he cares about his student and willing to help them.
Took this for a summer class. Was a super cool professor, sometimes he was bad at responding to emails but hey he's human. Posted a lot of lecture videos tbh but as long as you take good notes, you are sure to do well. Three books to read and we watched a lot of films but overall I really enjoyed this class and I usually don't like history.
Fantastic Professor. Had him for three semesters now. His classes typically consist of writing 2 papers, reading 4+ books, a midterm and a final. I most definitely did not make a promise to him to write a positive review.
The workload for a 100-level class was insane and unrealistic. I've been in another HIST172 class too and for some reason this prof gave 10x the amount of work from the other profs. From papers, quizzes, lectures, discussions, midterm/final which ALSO includes essays within.. and tough grading. Take if u want a challenge ig.
First time taking David's class, and he was very nice and funny. I don't think attendance was mandatory, but the course material's mostly lecture and thematic books. He's very laid back, understanding and will work with you if you encounter any difficulty. I was most grateful for the great lecture, welcome environment, and forgiving professor.
Professor Sheridan is my favorite instructor at CSULB. He's very passionate about what he teaches, and goes the extra mile to help his students succeed. His class consists of a lecture, sometimes a video, and he actively goes over what he's teaching, and why it's important, and makes the class very enjoyable with his fun personality. Best professor
Great Professor. Funny and witty. Engaging class. Lots of reading. He is a caring person who will work with you if you communicate with him. Will take again!
He's a great professor, nice, kind, dad jokes lol. But when note taking he puts what we're gonna be talking about rather the important info for the exams on his slides. Also if you ask for him to email you a slide or two bc of how fast he talks he says no bc he's afraid someone will sell his lecture slides which is so weird lol.
David is a very considerate professor. He was out for 2 months because of an hiking accident and still responded to emails. His feedback on essays is very detailed and focuses on your growth as a student. Class was a total of 2 essays that you get to pick out of 5 prompts, 1 reading assessment (very easy), and a historiography paper.
He's a tough grader and that's fine but what's not fine is the fact that he grades so late that it's hard to adjust to his level of scrutiny and when he does grade the assignments he doesn't input the grades at ALL, he just puts it in the comment section along with his feedback, which doesn't help in determining what you have in the class.
I WOULD AVOID TAKING THIS CLASS!!! He is a tough grader and he never submits grades into the grade book until the last week of the semester. It makes it hard for students to know how to improve. And if you email him asking for your grade, he DOES NOT REPLY. Just take another professor for your history GE requirement!!!!
It's an online class so theres that. Interesting approach, i enjoyed the readings. He does grade slow, but he's recovering from a hand accident, which he didn't want to announce to the whole class. He helped with an extension, and I found him to be fair and kind.
For a GE course there was A TON of papers. Im talking about every assignment given WAS A PAPER. That's all the class consisted of, PAPERS. Papers do take a while to get graded from the professor and the TA. He does answer emails quickly and is nice! Avoid taking this class if papers are not your thing. I will say the material was interesting.
Dr. Sheridan is an amazing professor. He is incredibly witty, smart, funny, and he makes the class so much fun to be in. The class is LECTURE HEAVY and if you miss even one day, you will miss a large chunk of info. The class is also very ESSAY and READING HEAVY. My class was required to write 3 essays not including the midterm and final.
Do not take him! He is an extremely harsh grader and very specific about his assignments. The workload was too much with constant papers and excessive reading. Grades are not posted on time and are sometimes only put in the comments instead of the gradebook, so you don't even know if you're passing. Assignments are often posted last minute.
