Really funny. Very light course work. Some test questions were pulled out of nowhere.

He's hyserical and makes class so much fun! The tests are tricky and some questions are very specific, but he's fair. He'll work with you if you need the help! Definitely take this class from him!

ps 211: easy, not much of a workload, take him if you aren't to interested in stats..you'll get a basic understanding. ps 253 (psych of dreams)light workload (no required reading)i wish i had learned more tho. really nice guy

Funny guy for sure. No book for psych of dreams which is good, but since all of his stuff comes from lecture, if you don't happen to write down something he says, you'll miss it on the test.

Shim is a doll! Class is fun and you will really learn. Go to all the lectures, study, and you will get an A, and a ton of laughs - I promise. Don't buy the textbook though, it's like, $112.00 and totally useless.

awesome guy very colloquial and easy to relate to, and you learn a lot more than you think you did. the tests are super easy if you look over your notes. you don't need the book, but you also can't ever miss lecture.

AWESOME TEACHER....he uses his jokes, profanity and his clinical experience to exxplain some of the psychological terms. You dont have to buy the books because tests are based on his lectures ONLY so make sure you go to class but its not like you would want to miss any of it. Final is cumulative.

He's funny and all, but his lectures are all over the place. You DO learn, you just never know what's important enough to study for the test. As such, it's impossible to write down EVERYTHING. Def not as easy as everyone says.

I LOVED prof. Shim! He is hilarious, interesting, and genuinely cares (despite what he says). Of all the years I've been at BU, this is the one class I held a perfect attendance for and looked forward to every night. Tests aren't easy but he's very lenient with papers.

Shim is a great professor. He makes what other professors may seem hard, easy. As long as you attend lectures, this will be very easy. And he jokes so much and is so interesting, the time flies.Do yourself a favor, and if you want to learn alot in this field, take his class.

Shim is an amazing lecturer and will keep you captivated. His lectures are a scattered so make sure you take really good notes, as the book is definitely not helpful (don't buy it). Nice guy, hilarious, and knowledgable. Test are a bit difficult, go to review sessions.

Very funny. Quizzes r annoying, but make u study material & ask ques.'s before exam. Def. ask him to clarify things b/c he sometimes digresses or is not always organized. I think he sometimes thinks he taught us something, but actually didn't and taught it to another of his classes during the day!

Professor Shim is definately one of the most entertaining professors at BU. Time flies by, but make sure you take good notes b/c thats where he gets his test questions from. DONT buy the book. Make sure you take the class with someone you know, b/c you'll need to get the notes if you miss a lecture

Shim is definitely worth taking. He has interesting anecdotes that actually relate to the real world, not just textbook crap like most. People need to lighten, everyone's so critical on here. In comparison to other professors, Shim is up there with the best.

Professor Shim is awesome! He makes lecture enjoyable and obviously loves the subject. His anecdotes are mostly relevant and definitely interesting. He does his best to help you understand the topic, and provides a study guide for his exams. Awesome professor and interesting material - I definitely recommend taking this class with him!

AWESOME!!! take as many classes with him as possible! He is hilarious & down 2 earth. He also swears ALOT but it brings him down to our level. Incredibly approachable & helpful. Shim's class has been the best lecture class I've taken. He does a good job of entertaining, the class flies by. If you know the terms on the study guide, the tests are easy enough. Taking good notes is a must- the tests are mainly lecture-based. He moves quickly, but will stop and clarify if you ask.

A highly entertaining class; you'll never get bored. There is no point in buying the book; lectures are derived entirely from the notes. The grade is simply composed of 3 multiple choice exams and 1 multiple-choice final, so the load is light most of the semester.

Amazing class, Professor Shim in hilarious and tells ridiculous stories all the time... even though he usually forgets that he's told the same story 5 times, it's still completly entertaining. If you have the chance to take any of his classes- do it!

If you are a traditionally aged college student looking for an easy grade, take his class. If you don't mind a pro-Freud, egotistical, condecending, professor who teaches like it's college for dummies, that is. Swears like a truck driver to be cool and "relate" for no reason and acts like he's the only/best clinical psychologist in the world.

I loved this class. Take Shim if you can--he's a great lecturer, and tests are very straightforward. Bonus points for keeping me awake during the late afternoon, which is usually prime nap time!

Shim is an interesting guy and I always looked forward to going to class. However, his exams are very tricky. Watch out for the wording on the multiple choice and study your ass off for the second exam because he likes to make that one trickier.

He's a great teacher. 8 am classes are not my favorite, but i always looked forward to attending his lecture. The discussion classes are pointless but Professor Shim is great. I look forward to taking more of his psychology classes.

Lectures were hilarious, very entertaining, and A LOT of information- don't miss them! All of the tests come only from lectures, and if you miss one, be sure to get someone else's notes. Study hard for the tests, and it'll pay off. Not a lot of work involved AT ALL except for studying for exams. Discussions are pointless... don't waste your time.

This is one of the best classes I've taken at BU. Lectures are interesting, and the prof and TA are hilarious. Tests are kind of tricky because of the wording, but if you know the material (all from lectures), you should be just fine. And it was great doing a poster presentation instead of having to write an essay. TAKE THIS CLASS!

Very enthusiastic. Tells lots of good stories. Swears a lot. Useful information for life, not just boring class. Goes very fast and it's hard to keep up with notes, but if you take decent notes and read them you can get at least a B. Tests are straight from lecture. Book is interesting but ultimately useless.

This class was definitely the best class I've taken in a while. Prof. is sooo funny, and the lectures (even tho at 8am) were always awesome. Take notes cuz the tests are ENTIRELY based on the lectures. Don't even bother with the book.. and I went to only 1 discussion, and it didn't affect my grade at all. Very interesting subject material too.

He was my first class at BU. What a great day that was. He was talking to us like peers; sharing his passion for his field. Very funny yet very insightful. You never fall asleep during the lecture because he holds your attention. Really take decent notes so that you can use them to study from. Most test mat. is from lecture. Very happy with him!

PROFESSOR SHIM IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! if u r a psyc major, you cannot graduate with out taking one of his classes. He is so passionate, and has so much depth to offer to ANY psychology class he teaches - so inspirational and SOO FUNNY! He really cares about every one of his students. i think everyone else has pretty much summed it up. if you don't love his class you're either crazy, dead, or a prude. even if you're not a psych major, take his class. you don't have to buy books, tests are easy, and going to lectures is the high point of the day.

Shim is such a character, even his boring lectures are extremely entertaining. If you aren't put off by swearing, take this course. You will be surprised at how much information you retain without even trying, thanks to his unique lecturing style. You will miss this class when it's over!

Prof. Shim is a great prof. He made contemplate if i should change my major to psych. His 101 class is entertaining but you also learn a lot! He is very knowledgable and extremely helpful in office hours. He relates psych concepts to today's world which makes it easier to apply and much easier to remember. DEFINITELY take this class with him

Professor Shim is very clear, direct, very animated, has a lot of energy. he is knowledgeable, engages the class, there is never a dull moment. He says "the world would be a better place if there were more psychologists". I totally agree! His positive influence and motivation has been inspirational in my education. I highly recommend his courses.

I really enjoyed all of Professor Shim's classes. I learned a lot from his lectures and I miss the classes now that they are over. Besides being a great professor who understands and emphathizes with his students he is also a wonderful human being.I have been very lucky to have had him as my professor. I highly recommend him.

Had Shim for both Psych of Personality and Social Psych...by far my favorite professor here at BU! Loved the lectures--funny and informative. Don't need to spend $180 on the text because he covers everything in class and if you take good notes and study them you're fine.

This was by far my favorite class. Professor Shim is so funny and makes the subject really take life before the class. He is very helpful in office hours as well. His tests are fair but short ; usually 30 ?s meaning that each one is worth alot of points. I taught my course grade have been higher then it was but overall the course was fun.

Great professor. Entertaining class for a non-psych major, and doesn't require much work out of you, just one presentation and a couple midterms. Just studied my notes and the ones the TF gave us and got A's on all the tests.

Shim's class is really interesting and the tests are fairly easy. He's a really funny guy and has a great personality, but he jumps around way too much in lecture, so taking good notes is a challenge. Overall though, the class is enjoyable.

I actually enjoyed going to class! Don't need the textbook, everything is straight from his notes. And for every concept he teaches he has some hysterical story about a patient or himself to relate. Basically like a comedy show. I had a wonderful time in this class and am so sad that I won't be able to have another with him.

Don't read his review sheets! Really! Don't do it! My grade increased significantly after I stopped reading them, because he just doesn't come close to covering all the material you need to know for his tests. Shim uses humor to make information stick and he does it well. Go to lecture and take good notes (forget the book) and you'll be golden.

Lectures are fascinating & hilarious. He weaves in his own personal stories and experiences to help explain concepts and liven up the class. Review sheets for exams are long but if it's not on there then don't worry about it. Take notes, go to class, and go to office hours/read text if you need clarification. He's absolutely hilarious. If you need to take PS101 definitely get Shim you will not regret it. He has more exams, but he drops the lowest one which works out to your advantage.

Excellent professor, this was one of my favorite psych classes, and I truly looked forward to class each week. He is extremely knowledgeable and every one of his stories serves the purpose of furthering your understanding of psychopathology. He's also hilarious, by the way! Only one group project, a few quizzes, and a take-home final.

Dr. Shim is seriously a rockstar. His examples from his own experiences with therapy really help you remember the material, and you can tell that he is honestly passionate about what he's teaching. TAKE THIS CLASS. You will not regret it.

I have mixed feelings. he's the most hilarious professor I've ever had, and he makes lectures very interesting. however, among all his tangents it's sometimes hard to pick out the point of his stories (what you actually have to know for the test). often it seemed when questions were asked he'd talk a lot but not really answer the question clearly.

Shim has a great personality. His lectures are very easy to pay attention to because of his informal way of speaking and anecdotal teaching style. I loved the class! One thing to note - dont get too lost in his stories so that you forget what TECHNICAL term he was explaining. this is very important. His good explanations are often disguised.

Professor Shim is AMAZING. i took psych of personality with him last year and again for psychology of family. TAKE THIS CLASS. it's true he tells a lot of stories but they all help with understanding and memorizing the material. you have to take his class AT LEAST ONCE before you graduate!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND

No doubt that Shim's a natural comedian, but sometimes it's hard to extract the test material from his stories. I enjoyed going to class, though. Just make sure to take good class notes - I didn't touch the book. Not a high-stress class and I did fairly well. Only 2 test & a final. He's a great guy & I'm glad I took the course

You either love him or hate him. I LOVE him! This was the first time for him to teach DSM5, so timing is naturally hard to manage. He jokes a lot, but his jokes are hilarious and make the concepts easier to understand. He is profound, but you have to take the initiative to ask questions. You will do well if you work hard and go to the lectures.

Social Psych can be boring at times, but Prof Shim made it very fun. A little bit disorganized, but he always does a good job at making sure everyone understand the concepts. It is a very easy class over all. Recommended!

David Shim goes down in history as one of my favorite professors ever. He is hilarious, and tells great stories. Attend class and take good notes. If you don't remember the technical term because of his story just ask him to clarify. Do it a lot and you'll do great. HIGHLY recommended

By far the best professor I have had. He is really inspiring. Although you have to pick out the material from his stories, Its obvious when it is actual material and not just extra information. If something is confusing, attend the review sessions, which are super helpful before an exam. He gives you a study guide which tells you everything to know

Prof Shim...is a BU Rockstar psyche master hands down!Do not leave BU without taking a course with him, even if ps is not your major! Exams are str8 fwd but can be worded sort of tricky you have to think out side of the notes, and readings. Study guide helpful, but get together with others to better understand the course

Shim is awesome, super funny and engaging. His powerpoint slides are pretty thorough but he always adds things to them that he doesn't post online and will be on the test. Definitely need to study a lot for the tests, due to the high amount of content this course has. Attendance isn't mandatory but definitely helpful to attend.

I've had Prof Shim for 4 classes now (Abnormal, Personality, Clinical and Psychopathology). I love his lectures and his humor. He is very knowledgable and experienced so he has a lot of stories to tell (which help with understanding concepts and makes the class more laid-back). Always willing to help you. Truly inspirational and opens your eyes.

He had his TA write all of his tests for him this semester so whenever you had a question you were more likely to get help from the TA. Aside from that, Shim was a riot in class. He didn't take attendance regularly but I never missed a class because his lectures were really interesting and I felt like I learned a lot.

Dr Shim is awesome in many ways. If you actually LISTEN to Shim in lecture and write down what he says, you'll be fine. Don't bother copying down the ppt slides in your notebook; you can do that at home. Make sure to listen to him especially when he reads off his notes, as that is likely where he will get questions for the exams. Best psych prof.

Professor Shim really takes the time to connect classroom concepts to our daily lives. He uses his humor and personal stories to demonstrate these; he is not afraid to share these stories no matter how personal they are. Sometimes it may become a bit of a rant, but the lessons he teaches are so inspirational that I think it's definitely worth it.

Professor Shim is the man! Gives his students alot of practical knowledge and his lectures are AMAZING. Tests are pretty straightforward so as long as one goes to lecture and he Drops the lowest grade so getting an A isn't difficult. Definitely one of the best professors in BU. Grade is based on 4 exams and a presentation and participation.

took both his PS471 and 473 classes, and I love it! the lecture was interesting, since he explained the materials with his experiences. exams were also pretty straightforward. three hours classes didn't even feel long with him as the prof!

Shim is an absolute light! His classes are entertaining but jammmm packed with information. Pay attention because everything he says is important to the topics being discussed, but make sure you don't miss the association between the anecdotes and lecture topic. Hope you get in to his course!

He has great anecdotes that make learning the material easier. If you are okay with reading the textbook and cramming in a lot of notes, take his class.

This guy is the best. His tests are hard to find answers to, you have to really read to understand not always tested on facts but more on understandings too. overall, a really great guy and im happy to have taken his class.

His lectures consist mainly of anecdotes from his life, and can dilute the information that needs to be learned for the exams. However, he is an engaging lecturer and has a good sense of humor. Be sure to complete the exam study guides that he provides in order to prepare for exams.

He can be really challenging. His classes are very story based. He doesn't put most information on powerpoint so he pushes you to focus. For his class, you have to learn from stories instead of learn through straight memorization. His stories make sense together but you have to make the connection yourselves. After him other psy classes seem easy.

Shim is the best Psychology professor I've had so far at BU. He often includes real-life examples from the clients that he has, he is open to questions for the class, and he is very inspirational in his lectures. You need to study for his quizzes/tests, but as long as you take good notes in lecture you should be good.

Prof Shim is an amazingly hilarious lecturer. Attendance and participation help in the discussion but that may vary depending on TF. Make sure to show up to class because powerpoints contain barely any info and anything he says in lecture is FAIR GAME in an exam. Fast note-taking is essential!!! Not an easy A class but not bad. No extra credit.

His class changed my look on people and I've applied a lot of the things I learned in his class in my everyday life. He made me want to have a psych minor. He had real life examples of everything in his lectures. My tip is to have the study guide out during lecture and take notes ON the study guide.

Dr. Shim makes his lectures very interesting and engaging. Though he thinks he doesn't have a good sense of humor, I think that his dad humor is rather funny. He's just an all-around great guy to talk to about things outside of class.

I really liked taking the class with Professor Shim. I think he is funny and a lot of his lectures felt like inspirational speeches. He knows what he is teaching (he is been doing it for a long time) and I think he is fair. For our class he let us do grade corrections from our test to make our grade higher. It's a tough class but he is fair.

Dr. Shim is a really cool professor and very insightful. I appreciate how he incorporates his previous cases into lecture. Projects are meaningful and I feel like everything we do connects back to psychology. Highly recommend taking him.

Shim is very entertaining and has many office hours. The only thing is he talks fast, can be a little blunt when you ask him to repeat something, and his lectures are disorganized. For the exams, his study guides are really helpful and people's old Quizlets. Grade is 4 tests and discussion attendance/presentation. Don't buy the book, never read.

Dr. Shim is hilarious and really keeps your engaged the entire class. The material is very interesting and I actually enjoyed going to class. I really didn't like his quizzes or the way he graded just in general. It seemed very ambiguous to me in terms of what he was looking for certain aspects of projects/etc. Overall, he's tough but good.

Mr. Shim is such an interesting professor. Even if students are tired one day, you can tell everyone is still interested to learn and hear what he has to say. His stories relate perfectly back to the lecture topic. His study guide is clear and concise and his tests are pretty fair if you listen in lectures.

the class was tricky and tests were really frustrating. BUT shim is the FUNNIEST professors at BU and one of the funniest people i have ever met. even though I didnt get the grade I wanted, it was honestly worth it to be in such an entertaining lecture.

Do NOT buy the textbook, you will never use it, except maybe for your presentation. Shim is hilarious, but tends to go on tangents and use examples that are too specific to himself. Take very good notes of what he says in lecture, DO the study guides, and study exactly what he went over in lecture. GO to lecture, you will need to know what he says.

Dr. Shim is very passionate about teaching and psychology. I learned a lot from the class and he gives study guides so you know what to expect. He cracks many jokes in lectures and loves to use real-life examples to explain concepts. The exams were non-cumulative and there was one group presentation. I really enjoyed this class!

I took his PS251 last semester and he literally made me declare my major as psychology. His lecture is very funny and intriguing. He always bring some clinical example into his theoretical class, which is good to combine with what we learned so far. Every time I took his class, I don't want to let the class over. I love this teacher. I really I am.

Dr. Shim is one of the best professors I've taken at BU! His lectures are super interesting, and his class is great for anyone who aims to go into the field of counseling/clinical psychology. He's also super accessible and helpful outside of class. He does tend to ramble a bit, but it's usually pretty entertaining. Take his course!

Dr. Shim is a really great professor; he has a lot of academic/occupational/life experiences that he brings into his lectures and discussions. Only graded by a few assignments in some of his classes, grading is somewhat confusing, and do not expect to get an email back from him about anything. However he is one of BU's best and I would highly rec.

Decent professor, it's nice to hear his stories about old patients as it relates to the class but sometimes he goes off on tangents. Attendance wasn't required but it will be harder to get through the class if you don't go. We were only graded on tests but he does offer an optional paper that can replace you lowest grade or count as extra credit.

Shim talks the entire lecture which can be a drag but occasionally brings up stories about his patients to connect the concepts. If you study and review your notes from lecture before the tests (count for most of grade) you should do fine but the textbook is not needed. Not the best communicating over email so ask questions before or after class.

Professor Shim clearly has a passion for both teaching and for psychology. His lectures are very talk heavy, but he breaks the pace with funny stories or clinical experiences he's had. Tests are quite specific so take diligent notes. Definitely one of the best professors I've had at BU, especially within the Psych dept.

Professor Shim's class is very funny and entertaining. The people complaining are very dramatic; the tests are like easy high school tests and he covers all the material necessary to do well. He does not "belittle conservatives" at all either, rather, he states that if you deny science, you deny learning. This is the one class I never want to miss.

Lectures were funny and entertaining, but tests, despite being multiple choice, required a lot of studying. The subject matter in this course was incredibly interesting, and Shim brought it to life with real stories from his clinical work. Challenging because of the exams but definitely worth it in my opinion

Shim is an incredible, engaging, and funny lecturer! He drops the lowest exam grade and has many times for office hours. To do well you need to study hard and often, as his exams are tough. He does provide a study guide which helps a lot, and is excellent at explaining concepts and connecting them to the real world through his own experiences.

Uses a lot of anecdotes in class for us the understand the concepts, but his slides are not very helpful. The quality of the class would not be a 5.0 for everyone, but I personally loved his class b/c he was very engaging and funny. This class is not an easy A (barely any curve, test heavy, & graded by few things). Also, DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK!

Exams were TOUGH; many questions on 1 throwaway comment he spent 5 seconds on in class. His lectures are entertaining because of how he relates his anecdotes to the material. Textbook is useless, topics are boring (mainly theories so it's basically a history class). He's nice in class but introverted outside of class. Just take LOTS of notes

Prof Shim's classes are very lecture heavy, however, he is very specialized in his clinical work and shares stories about patients he's worked with to help further the information he is teaching. His exams are based on lectures, and the slides are minimal. You don't need the textbook if you take really good notes! My favorite class this semester!

Professor Shim is amazing! He makes his lectures so entertaining and I really looked forward to coming to class. I learned so much, but unfortunately, my final grade didn't reflect this. I would still 100% take this class, but do be warned the tests are tough (they get easier as the semester progresses) and the average for our first test was 68%.

Lectures are entertaining, but don't get lost in his stories. Spends 30 mins talking about something random and the last sentence of the story will be how it all connects to Freud. 25% discussion, and 25% each for best three of four exams (worst is dropped). Tests can be hard to score well on as they often have information Shim barely discussed.

He is a really nice guy, but he goes off on so many tangents that it is easy to get lost and not know what you should be taking notes on. Puts the slides online but really elaborates in class so it's worth it to go. 4 tests and lowest gets dropped. Test go from hardest to easiest. No final exam. No homework which is nice but makes tests important!

I loved going to lectures and hearing all of his stories. He made the topics very enjoyable and I loved his energy. That being said, it made taking notes and studying really difficult. Textbooks are kinda useless. Go to his office hours and ask questions.

Dr. Shim is an engaging lecturer who always brings a personal touch into every lesson. While the tests were hard, his grading policy (drop the lowest test grade) makes the class manageable. I'm sure that in his more specific fields he would be even better.

Very fun lectures and great story telling. He pops a lot of jokes! It is very test heavy but they were open note for us. In the past it hasn't though so it may not be the case for everyone. Tests are difficult content even with open notes and some questions are very specific and hard to find online even! Applying concepts is very common on tests!

Very likable prof. Lots of jokes and personal stories which keep the lectures engaging, but tangents sometimes cut into material. Go to every lecture because the slides are just an outline and most of the material is not in the textbook, but the lectures are worth it. Very difficult/specific exams but open note; make sure to write down everything.

I love Dr. Shim so much. Currently taking him again for PS251 and still love him. He is so engaging and entertaining, goes on a lot of tangents so lectures are kind of hard to follow but tests were open note and remote and he even drops the lowest (No final or homework either). He spent half the class making jokes about his dead mom. the tests were open source so make sure you organize your notes from class before the exam. write down everything he says because he doesn't make clear what is going to be on the exam and his useless tangents.

This class is a great opportunity to learn the steps of applying your course/academic experience to real-world scenarios. Shim's clinical experience is a great supplement to the course. Some parts are repetitive if you took PS251 with him, but quizzes/exams are open-note and fair. The group project is actually fun. Overall, a great experience!

Lectures were pretty unfocused and Shim likes to ramble, but the tests were very easy and it was a fun course to take. The tests were based almost entirely on the lectures and were open book/note and were really good.

4 midterms no final and one group project everyone gets a 100 in, he also drops the lowest midterm. Definitely rambles and struggles to stay on topic. Will often mention a quote of nickname for a concept or psychology once and that will be on the test.

I learned so much in lecture from his tangents. But you do have to make sure to actually take notes. His random stories connect to a definition and you need to know what it actually means.

Professor Shim is who I can credit for giving me a profound interest in clinical psych! This is for his experimental psychology class, which is a semester-long group project. This is my third time with Dr. Shim and he is the best! He is very clear about grading even though it is harsh, and he really makes sure that you get the grade you deserve. You HAVE to go to class and will not get a good grade if you do not.

Honestly had no issues with his class. I think his style of teaching made the lectures more entertaining and as a result more engaging. Since everything is open note, as long as you pay attention and take notes you're pretty much set to do well. If you do struggle he's always available in office hours.

David Shim is my king and 251 is my favorite class at BU so far. Yes, the exams are most of your grade but if you pay attention in lecture which is basically a free ted talk and take notes you will be fine.

He's funny and his lectures are packed with storytelling to integrate information into real-life examples. Personally, these stories work for my learning style, and it may be a bit more difficult to follow if you like clear guided slides. If you don't attend lectures, it will be challenging. Have a friend that takes good notes incase you get sick!

Loves talking off the dome; concepts are varied, but tests are easy and open note. Genuinely cares for people but not a structured class at all. When asked to describe him as a professor, it always comes back to "you'll learn a lot about absolutely nothing." Knowing personality psych background info will make or break.

Easiest A ever. Lectures were not mandatory, but when I went he had insane lore which was really fun to listen to. He also brought his dog to lecture once. All exams were take home and open note, discussions were mandatory once a week, with one group presentation. No homework, and if you took AP Psych this was a walk in the park. Super cool guy!
