he played the banjo in class one day to emphasize that "Pollution is a bad thing. If you like it you're a dope"
Shull rocks. Extra credit opportunities abound, if you need them. Very clear lectures, case examples, all posted online. Study guides given, which are dead on what will be on any exam. Great guy, fun to talk with.
The class is boring, but shull was very excted and pretty fun.
He was so excited about what he was teaching which made it better. The class was interesting. The tests were kind of hard, some tricky questions. Know specifics, especially numbers and percentages. He plays banjo and sings about pollution! It rocks!
The class was boring as all get-out, but Shull made it a little more tolerable. His enthusiasm kept me awake a few classes of the quarter.
Prof. Shull was VERY enthusiastic about science, it's not my subject but he did make it somewhat interesting due to that enthusiasum. The tests were hard. He'd give a study guide but didn't always follow it. He's an awesome banjo player though. It was priceless when he sung about pollution!
Great guy to have a class with, make sure to attend lectures because reading the book is pretty much useless..

A very interesting class, prof. is obviously enthusiastic and excited to be teaching it. Lectures get a little boring at times but debates and guest speakers keep it interesting. Tests arent too hard i didnt study and managed to get a C, just do the reading and at least listen to the lectures (He posts lecture notes online!!) Easy class!
This class is easy as long as you study for the tests. He posts all of his lectures online and also posts study guides for each of the 3 tests. Know everything on the study guide, study the slides, and you should be good to go. I went to class about 5 times total and got an A.
He is very excited about the subject. He is very clear and helpful. His tests don't try to trick you. Do the extra credit and you will do good in this class.
Lecture class, can't imagine it getting any easier then this. Just make sure you do the study guide and read the book.
This guy gets really into what he's teaching so his enthusiasm makes the lecture slightly more interesting. You should do fine as long as you do the study guide. Also, he posts the lectures slides online before class and it's very helpful to take notes with them.
Super boring class. Didnt think he was a very good teacher but its an easy A if you do the study guide and read the slides.
DOn't email him questions about exam material, he won't write back and if he does they are 1 word answers. Look to TA's for help. Study guides are your best friend. Know them and you'll get an A. And please take advantage of the extra credit. It actually helps.
Fairly easy class, especially if you need this for a science gur. Although he is very passionate about what he teaches he can be very, very boring. Tests can be hard because he can get pretty specific but if you use his study guide it will help you.
Shull was... ok. He's REALLY boring sometimes and fasinating other times. I didn't read the book and got As on all the tests. Just print off the lecture notes online if you skip. I know people who never attended lecture and got an A in the class. Unfortunatly, I think he made enviornmental studies a lot more boring then it should have been :(
I thought this class would be interesting, but it was pretty much a waste of my time. Shull is probably a nice guy, but he was a boring teacher. The tests except the final are online and I thought they were kind of hard, even when you can look them up.. Very unhelpful if you try to talk to him one on one.
He is crazy! But in a fun way. He is very enthusiastic and loves what he is teaching. If you are interested in enviromental science he very good. But beware he has a banjo and uses it. :)
Shull is a good guy with a lot of enthusiasm for his subject. Good lectures and lots of extra credit opportunities make this class easy if you do the work. If you get bored, just close your eyes and pretend Kermit the Frog is teaching.
you dont need to come to class every day. midterms online, final's in class. study from the lecture notes and your good. he's pretty funny, even pulled out a banjo once but sometimes his lectures are so boring.
lectures get very tedious, first two exams online with no time limit, very enthusiastic (sometimes to the point of being annoying), final is surprisingly challenging, book is very boring but should be read; wicked banjo player. Straightforward lecture class.
Lectures are fairly interesting, although often the amount of info is overwhelming. Debates were pointless wastes of time. Online tests were poor preparation for the large cummulative final although with all that said I got an A, this is an easy class to satisfy a science GUR and there's no lab! He says "um" in between every word which is annoying
He is very passionate about his subject and it shows by his knowledge of all subjects within the environment. His lectures are interesting but sometimes get a little too detailed and drawn out. But I would recommend this class for a good GUR.
All his midterms are taken online which is great! He tries to make the class fun and engaging.
I loved Shull. He's so enthusiastic and a cutey. I came to almost all his lectures but never read the book and got an A. You do need to know the lecture notes for the tests, which are online. Sometimes David's classes were a little boring but he had guest speakers, played the banjo, and raped about dirt to keep things interesting. I recommend him.
Shull is a funny teacher. He tries to keep class engaging most of the time. Overall I really liked him. Sometimes he was boring, but he was light-hearted and kind of silly. The first two exams are online but rather difficult for online tests. The final is cumulative. I would recommend him.
Online midterms makes the class pretty easy. A good way to take care of one of your science GURs.
Sadly this class lessened my interest in science even more. His lectures were extremely unhelpful and everything I learned I read in the book. He was gone randomly and we watched planet earth. Tests are annoyingly difficult and random even though they are online. I would not recommend him for esci101.
Professor Shull knows his stuff. He is energetic, keeps you interested and throws in some humor. If you are somewhat interested in the environment then you'd enjoy ESCI 101 with Shull. Class is fairly easy. I have no complaints about him.
David Shull is a great professor! He's super nice, funny, and really helpful. His class is really interesting if you like learning about the ocean (duh). I didn't need to use the book a whole lot. It was definitely important to come to class and take good notes! He even brought our class coffee every day and gave a 5-10 minute break!
Let the record show, this professor- although a very nice guy in nature- proves to be somewhat of a hardass who expects students to comprehend his theories and ideas when only covering them briefly. Was not expecting the amount of work i had to put into this class...do not take this class if you are already got a plate of tough classes.
When I took this class I had to miss some exams due to medical reasons, I had extreme difficulty communicating with Shull during this process. He always responded days after I e-mailed him. By the time he responded the info was useless, although he would give me none anyway. He tries to be funny and it creates silent awkward moments in class.
Tries to be funny but really just awkward. He loves to brag about his Marine Bio work and tosses in way more chemistry than is appropriate for an entry-level class. Stresses memorization much more than actual understanding of concepts. Quizzes are online and easy, but that's the only saving grace.
Class was boring. He is not a good teacher, doesn't explain the concepts well and acts like a lot of things are common knowledge that really aren't if you haven't taken a lot of science. Tests have little to do with material learned and have a lot to do with things that were just mentioned and not elaborated on or written down.
Shull's class was actually a lot harder than I expected it to be. He's a nice guy and he's very energetic, but I found it hard to stay awake for the entire 80 minutes. His tests were a lot harder than I though they should have been. He knows his stuff, but taught over the heads of most of the class. I wouldn't consider this an easy GUR, or class.
great teaching
I think that he is a great teacher but I have to agree that his tests were harder than I expected. His lectures were mostly helpful but I found after the tests that I studied the wrong information because it wasn't in his study guides.
He is so ridiculously into himself it's painful to listen to. It was relatively easy as a class though but you have to study. Don't use the study guides, they don't help. Assignments were easy and opinion based. He didn't apply the material to real life situations though so not very applicable. Take it if you need it, but not for fun...
He did a really good job with this class, because it can get pretty boring but he really tried to get the class motivated. I took this class with no physics or geology background and was able to get a good grade. Stick to his exam study guides! If a topic is on that sheet he will put it on the exam!
While I do plan on becoming an environmental science major, Shull does an excellent job engaging students and clarifying the material. That being said, the material is super straight forward and a lot of it is common sense. Shull is also a bomb banjo player and has a decent sense of humor. He also gives plenty of Extra credit opportunities.
Huge class so there's no personal feel but he's fairly personable so its fine. He even read and replied to a large email about a lecture I sent him. Easy class if you go to it and just review the day before the tests. He can occasionally talk to much about his personal research projects or in depth chemical compounds but its a decent class to take
Fun, easy going teacher. Makes silly jokes and creates funny innuendoes. Such a huge class, and offers extra credit projects! Tests are simple, just review the power points and pat attention in class.
I'm bad at science, but I tried really hard in this class. Spent days learning everything on the study guide and the exams are each way different. If you take this class take careful notes of what he says, not just whats on the powerpoints.
Study your ass off for the tests. It's a lot of memorizing random stuff and terms. Do the extra credit, it really makes a difference even though it's only ten points.
Super cool guy. Would definitely recommend this class for anyone needing to fill a GUR. Didnt read the book or hardly study for the tests and still got good grades on them. Should have done the Extra Credit but still did well. He is a good teacher and the class is pretty interesting. RECOMMENDED!
Dr. Shull is really interested in this subject, and seems passionate when teaching; but during lectures he tends to end up just talking to himself. The class is very dry and a really boring hour and 20 minutes, but not the worst GUR I have taken. Not too hard to get a good grade in the class.
The most boring class. Teacher is annoying and tries to make the class much harder than it needs to be for a 3 credit class. Power-points make no sense unless you took notes or heard his commentary. TAKE A DIFFERENT TEACHER FOR ESCI 101
Shull is super passionate about oceanography and marine ecology, which is great, but he is really really confusing. He get's people wrapped up in details that they don't need to know and makes everyone confused about something that could be very simple. Really nice guy though, and really excited about the ocean!
Dr. Shull has an amazingly upbeat attitude, which makes his classes awesome to be in. He is a very enthusiastic about oceanography which is very inspiring. His research is very interesting too, so it's cool when references it during class. This class is math heavy at first, but this fades. I find him to be an awesome person and great professor.
Shull is witty and smart, probably one of my favorite professors in Huxley. The textbook was really helpful for tests, he tends to teach right out of it except for a couple topics so either show up and learn it really well or use the textbook to cram knowing that you're learning the right thing. Grades harder than Love but isn't unfair.
Would not recommend for esci 101. Lecture slides make no sense unless you took awesome notes in class, and the tests are unexpectedly hard. He seems like the sweetest and nicest guy in the world, but I did not care for his class.
Interesting class. Lectures were a little long. Reasonably easy.
Pretty good. No textbook, which made me happy. I took as a GUR and would take it again.
Probably one of the most boring lecturers I've had so far at Western. I wouldn't recommend him if you have no interest in science thats for sure. You could take ENSCI 101 for a GUR like I did, but i would save yourself the pain of dreading class and take a different GUR.
Professor Shull is an enthusiastic teacher with usually high-energy to keep the classroom moving along. He will go through his powerpoints relatively quick and there's no textbook. His tests are pretty difficult, and provides difficult-to-fill-out study guides. Thus I recommend talking to him before each test about which questions are confusing.
Shull was great! Very enthusiastic and obviously passionate about what he teaches. The study guides for tests are extremely helpful so if you study that and look over his slides from class you should do well on the exams. Besides tests, there were only 2 homework assignments, both of which were very easy and not time consuming. Would recommend him!
Only have two assignments that are due online. 3 tests, 2 midterms and a final. His lectures are long and it's tempting to skip class but the lectures that he posts online are not the exact same as the ones he shows in class. He is such a cool professor though, really into the environment. He also plays the banjo and will bring it to class.
He's a really great lecturer! It's hard to make a two hour class go by quickly but he does a great job of it! Take good notes though or you won't pass the exams.
Great professor, makes the lectures very interesting and fun to listen to. I actually wanted to go to class! Very nice guy as well, more than happy to help students outside of available class time. You need to go to his lectures though, he gives out a few readings, but attendance is a must if you want to do well in the class.
Shull was super funny in lectures and very enthusiastic about oceanography. He is a tough grader though and expects you to know concepts the way he presented them in class which is not necessarily what you'll find in the book or online. There were a few out of class assignments and readings and a few very short in class quizes.
Shull is a good prof. He shows a lot of enthusiasm in his lectures which is refreshing. He does come across slightly elitist which makes him hard to approach. He gives study guides for the tests, if you study those and the lecture notes you should do good..
ESCI 432 is interesting its a small class. Every class you are all discussing the articles and papers you've read before hand (anywhere from 20 to 80 pages of reading). The material is interesting. But in the end you have a HUGE chunk of your grade to a research paper, know this: there is no help, no prompt, and no rubric. Its hard and confusing.
Professor Shull is great. I took his class on the oceans, something he is very passionate about. Wasn't too hard and he gave a good study guide that encompassed what ended up on the test. I really enjoyed the class and even though I'm not an ESCI major I really enjoyed it.
Do not take a class with Dr. Shull if you can't take criticism. He has comprehensive and detailed knowledge about marine systems. He expects you to catch on to difficult concepts explained well, but quickly. Feedback is harshly critical when an error is made. While difficult and harsh, he is one of the best prof. I have had. Taken 4 crses w/ Shull
If you naturally pick up on science and math, you'll probably love it. He teaches a lot of concepts through math/physics and expects everyone to understand and moves on quickly. He makes it a little uncomfortable to ask questions during class since his humor is generally heavy on mockery. His class wasn't for me since I'm not a math mind.
David is an ok professor. His lectures are all over the place and can be confusing which is bad because those are what the tests are based on. Posts his slides online but are hard to follow outside of class. There are only two tests for this class and about 10 online quizzes. Theyre easy if you follow along with lectures and his study guide.
David was okay. I took his class on oceans expecting for something a lot different than what I got. His class is mostly about bacteria and sea floor chemistry which wasn't what I expected. I thought the class was kind of hard, but he provided amazing study guides and a great extra credit opportunity. I like him as a person more than a professor.
Engaging and passionate lecturer but can get really excited about his topic to the point he starts going really fast, therefore, if you don't show up to the lecture, you will be very very lost as most of his posted slides are photos and graphs. Textbook is free online via open-source.
David is very passionate about oceanography and gets very into his lectures but often talks fast which makes it difficult to write notes and study notes. Lecture slides he posts online are mostly graphs and pictures so you really need to get the information from class. Felt uncomfortable asking questions
FOR ESCI 204!! He posts his slides online but theyre not helpful to study from. Its better to take notes on what he is saying. Your grades are only based on the weekly quizzes and the two midterms. Unfortunately his teaching style didnt mix with me.
Dont take any classes with David Shull. He is horrible at lectures and makes no sense and just assumes people get it. He isnt good at responding to emails when he says he will get back to you. I talked to him about the Monday quizzes being about stuff that he hadnt lectured about and he didnt even know the material that was on the quiz.
He is not good at lecturing, very all over the place and disorganized. Weekly quizzes are not over things that are talked about in class, and are often difficult. Only graded on 5 quizzes, a midterm, and the final. Long study guide for a 50 minute class. But, he did have extra credit that's worth 10 points towards your midterm grade.
He's an okay teacher. the quizzes are based on the readings but you can easily just search them online. The exams are super easy if you do the study guide, and even then the study guide has way more questions than the exam. you gotta go to class because his slides alone dont make sense. it's an interesting class but too fast paced.
Had David for ESCI 204- Oceans & loved it! He's passionate, knowledgeable & so enthusiastic. Online quizzes are real easy to pass (open notes, lecture notes) he gives you study guides for tests, which really helps prep you for the exams! Would recommend him as a prof. Fun lectures even when very scientific/technical.
You have to be prepared for his dry humor, if you go to his office hours and say "I don't understand this" he'll reply with "well read more". He's very passionate about what he teaches though and is pretty relaxed when it comes to teaching norms. Last class we met at a pizzeria/bar. For my last paper he only putted out negatives but I ended up fine
David is really enthusiastic, which can sometimes be exhausting, especially as a more mature college-aged audience. However, the class was interesting, but fairly fast paced. Not hard to do well, just do the quizzes and go to class.
David is very passionate about marine science and it shows. He can be over enthusiastic sometimes, which keeps it interesting, but sometimes he goes to deep on topics you don't need to know if you're not continuing on in marine science. Overall his lectures were easy to understand, and the homework is simple as long as you pay attention.
Extremely excited and passionate about what he studies. Interesting slides and examples, a slightly fast class pace but nothing awful. Fair tests, lets you know exactly what'll be on them. I was expecting mostly marine biology, but Esci204 has a a good amount of ocean chemistry and physics too.
I had him for sal297 and it was first time that class was taught so it was kind of a mess. We did get to go and do lab stuff that was really enjoyable and he seemed really passionate about everyone getting involved. He was very excited about the stuff he taught and I've heard from other people that he just teaches the same thing in everything.
Harder to find outside of class than most professors. Very funny and lectures were very entertaining; he's clearly passionate about oceanography. Going to class was very important because material on the test would be pulled directly from his examples.
Really enjoyable class, and Shull is a good lecturer with a lot of passion for marine science. That said, don't take this class if you want an easy GUR. Write down everything, because the most random things will absolutely be on the tests. Missed a ton of the "Monday" assignments on canvas because they were due at 12PM rather than AM, so watch out.
Schull is very passionate, very energetic during lectures. He goes through the power point really quickly so you have to go back on your own to get it all. He also draws a lot on the board which is not online. His exams are pulled right from lecture, but they can get a bit tricky sometimes. Personally not my fave prof but good for ocean stuff.
I've taken David for 2 classes - his energy is incredible! He really cares about marine sciences, and if show you care too (office hours, emails, asking questions) he will really go the extra mile to make sure you understand. Expects a lot but gives you a lot. Funny and dynamic. Wicked smart. Taking classes with him the rest of the yr.
Everything we have to do is clearly outlined for us. His canvas page is a little different than usual but not hard to use. His lectures are nothing crazy, but you can tell he cares a lot about oceanography and wants to teach us. He does his best to maintain an interactive element in his lectures. Weekly quizzes are not hard. He is a fun guy :)
I took this class bc I thought it sounded interesting. However, there were FAR too many lectures for this class to be good. There were even lect. during finals week! He put the assignments in "assignments" and not "modules", where the lectures were, which was confusing. AWFUL fast-paced/dense lect. It was hard to know what would be on the quizzes.
Prof. Shull is super kind, and very clearly loves this classs content. The content is very straightforward and easy to decipher, and tests are easy. There are a few assignments that are pretty tough, but not so bad that you cant get a good grade with a little work. Its definitely a little more work than a few other GURs, but imo worth it.
Entertaining lectures and easy grading criteria makes Professor Shull a great professor. The class is very easy as long as you follow the lecture. I say that many of my classmates were having a hard time and idrk what was up with that but the class was an easy A.
Prof Shull is a really good professor. He is extremely passionate about the ocean and it shows. Attendance is not mandatory, but his lectures are mostly pictures and lecture off that. The lectures are super informative and interesting. Exams are close to the study reviews which is great. Tough grader, but you really need to know the information.
Dr. Shull is a pretty cool guy, and he definitely knows his stuff. His exams are very close to the study guides, but the exams are weighted so much of your grade that you HAVE to do really good on them to get a good grade. If you miss class it's pretty difficult to catch up as most of lecture is him talking about graphs/bullet points on the slides
Very passionate and knowledgeable of what he teaches, but hes a tough grader and your overall grade in the class demands you do well on the exams. Pretty fast paced also in my opinion, and to sum up his teaching style, he would ask us lots of questions (of what he was trying to teach us) and answer them in a confusing and long winded manner.
This class was only discussion. No lectures, you basically teach yourself the topics. Lots of papers to read in a short amount of time with a quiz each class. You also lead a 2-hour discussion. A final paper and oral presentation. The class is pretty chill and the prof is very knowledgeable on the topics. Great?
He was so nice and entertaining but I wouldn't take him again, it absolutely screwed up my GPA. I did all assignments, studied for countless hours for every test and never got the grade I know I deserve.
The class is extremely test heavy: 25% of grade is on weekly take home quizzes, 75% is based off of in-person exams. He requires attendance but yet offers no make up opportunities when you must miss one his lectures that occurs 4 days a week, which is odd for a class size of ~100. The quizzes are MUCH easier than the midterm and final, so study...
Oceanography has been one of my favorite classes I have taken at Western because of Dr. Shull's lectures. He is always very excited about the material that he's describing, and it resonates with the class. He does a fantastic job of integrating class participation, written examples, and engaging slides in his lectures.
ESCI 204 is one of the only college classes I was not afraid to participate in. Dr Shull would ask questions and once people answered, he was able to form short little "maybe" hypothesis out of the answers, even if they were incorrect. He is very passionate about marine science, and I enjoyed the topic so I felt that it was very easy.
This class was SO MUCH reading. I learned SO MUCH though... so I'm conflicted. He's brilliant but a tough grader! Essentially, you read 3 papers (spanning 5-15 pages each) before each class, get tested on them, and discuss them for 2 hours. You are graded on contributions to the discussion and ~insightfulness~. "Talking to talk" won't get you an A.
As a woman considering environmental science this class deterred me from entering the stem world. David Shull has over 20 readings in his class and only one of them has a female scientist participating in the research. I have also noticed avoidance of calling on me and my female classmates as well as my classmates of color.
This class can be super cool in between Davids egostistical rants. In order to pass you need to memorize everything ONLY on the study guide he gives you. Thing is he only mentions the answers to the study guide material maybe once so either take good notes everyday or go to exam review day where you can ask and get all the answers you need for it.
Lets talk about David! He goes on rants about completely unrelated and overcomplicated material that makes everyone feel so lost. I really loved learning about the ocean. The way he does it? Not my fav. No mentioning of indigenous practices while talking about historical overfishing and all research he uses is white balding old men like him.
You need to put effort into this class to do well in it. If you have no passion for the subject, don't take the class. If you do, show up, ask questions, take notes, and read the course texts. He's a traditional teacher, but in the even-handed sense as opposed to the authoritarian. Despite the reviews here, I saw no evidence of discrimination.
Energetic and passionate professor that got me very interested in the subject. The midterm and the final were disproportionately hard though and totally messed me up. This class made me want to go down the path of environmental science, I just wish I was smart enough to actually do that. Very fun lectures but make sure you are paying attention.
maybe i'm just going through a woke liberal phase, but it seems david has more respect for men in this field than he does women. it's not obvious until you notice one thing, then it becomes more and more apparent. in all the readings, there was one woman in a cowritten paper and he didn't even mention her name when discussing her paper in class.
Dr. Shull turns a lecture into a story, and he's a very good storyteller. He can be intimidating one on one because of his passion for the subject. You should really WANT to learn if you take this class, especially the lab 322.
This class was very test heavy, but based exactly off of the questions on the study guide. He is an energetic lecturer and often includes personal stories. He likes to teach by asking questions, but doesn't make people feel bad about having an incorrect answer. Kind of fast-paced lectures, but if you go to class and take notes you will be fine.
The lectures were engaging but very dense. He posts the slide notes (which are not comprehensive) so take notes on what he says in class. There were a handful of reading quizzes that were very short (
Labs were a little disorganized. The lab manual gave brief instructions. Be prepared to write a lot and receive borderline harsh and very blunt feedback on papers. There was no rubric for the papers, which were graded solely on the professors feedback. During lab itself, the professor was helpful but would get irritated if students were confused.
Engaging lectures, but be prepared for tough exams. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for quiz prep. Attendance is mandatory, so stay focused and do the readings. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding class.
I really enjoyed David. He brought a lot of enthusiasm into the class. You can tell that he is passionate about what he teaches. I think if you go to the lectures and actually pay attention you will be fine in his classes. He also offers extra credit which is nice.
This class was so hard. The lectures were difficult to follow and the exams were very difficult
Awesome lectures that were easy to follow. I was excited to go to class and David always seems excited to teach. If you memorize study guides and show up to class this will be an easy A.
This was a really cool class but there was a lot of information that was hard to grasp and final didn't follow the study guide very well. Professor Shull was really nice and he seemed to really have a passion for what he was teaching. I also think my lack of understanding could've been helped if I went to more of the lectures and focused more.
he was amazing in Oceans: topics in Marine Science. Every class was fun and he had great energy. His tests are a little bit challenging but if you study and pay attention in class you will do fine. Definitely recommend taking his class, he was my favorite professor.
