Mr.Simmions is Awesome!!! he's soo Hyper all da tyme its funni! Im glad I have him as a teacher.. Stay Cool man! I can't believe im actualy learning about art...I never realli understood it but now im gettn the hang of it.. WAY TO GO!!!
His movie class is amazing. You will learn so much about movies, it's so neat, and the class is super easy. Humanities isn't that great but he makes it bearable, and is very forgiving on tests when you don't have a clue. Highly recommend!
Awesome class! It was really interesting, even if you're not into all of the stuff it covers. The tests and writing assignments are reasonable and the reviews are extremely helpful.
MY FAVORITE TEACHER! he is awesome! if you haven't taken him, you will love him AND the class. He is enthusiastic about teaching and it rubs off on you. He really got to know us, and i now appreciate art and music 100% more. He is also VERY knowledgeable!! We had a Christmas party at the end of the semester too. :)
The best teacher I've ever had! He makes the material interesting. You actually look forward to going to class.
Dr. Simmons is crazy and makes this class fun for everyone. He has lots of energy and makes learning easy. All you have to do is study "2 minutes a day" and you'll know it all. I would recommned him to anyone.
Funny guy! Lots of energy. However you can't slack off in class and still pass. There around 8-9 essays in class about 1 every other week (I wrote more in this class than my English comp class) Gordan rule lingers on here. 3 major exams each exam also has 2 essay questions on it. Fun, but you'll get writers cramp!
I loved this class! He is the greatest techer! Lots of enthusiasim and energy-open to comments and questions and you get aknowledged by him when you have either one! Take any of his classes-tough tests but he is very helpful!
I love, love, love Dr.S. He is by far my favorite teacher ever! He's so much fun and full of energy! I really enjoyed going to class because he makes learning so much fun. Do yourself a favor and take one of his classes, you will be so happy you did it.
Dr. Simmons is one of the best teachers I have ever had. I would take him again. He is fun, and has lots of energy. Test are straight from the notes he gives.
Very nice guy! He is EXTREMELY passionate about what he does! Overall, a very good teacher!
Great teacher! He kept the class upbeat and interesting. His test were very challenging so you really, I repeat, really have to study!Plan to attend all of the classes! I would not have wanted to miss any of them. Make sure to take good notes!
Dr. Simmons is very enthusiastic; don't remember seeing him on an "off-day." Loves his movies, and can tell you anything about them. Just do your journals and you'll be fine.
Great teacher! Makes subject interesting and thought provoking. Wish there were more like him!
This class was fun. He gives an essay(only 2 pages though) every week or so on the movies you watched. I made all A's on them. He gives three BIG tests. STUDY your notes!! Other than that... watched movies every week, had a food sign up sheet, and the class was very interesting. He's a very energetic, HYPER teacher. He LOVES class participation.
By far, my favorite teacher ever! I took him for Humanities and Cinema Appreciation. I've never come away with such knowledge from a class. He made everything so exciting that it made you want to pay attention. I use things I learned in those classes all the time. I HIGHLY advise people to take Dr. Simmons!
Enthusiastic, can be fun but very political and will push his views. He's super cute. Papers are due after every movie, not a synopsis but you must tie points from the lecture to scenes in the movie. Tests require much study. Not recommended if you aren't in to directing and film language or if you just like to watch movies. No "Easy A" Must Study!
He's simply very passionate about his area of study, and has the ability to make it seem interesting for the average student.
Alright,I gotta stick up for my man Simmons on thsi one...To all the losers that think Cinema Appreciation is hard:(1)This is called COLLEGE for a reason people! (2)Tests come straight from the notes, you don't even need to open the book to pass his tests, and (3) journals are easy if you actually *gasp* pay attention while watching the damn films!
BEST...PROFESSOR...EVER!!!! Not only is Dr. Simmons one of the most helpful, entertaining, and coolest guys at OWC, his cinema class was amazing, and his teaching style is something I wish other professors would pick up on and try themselves...I wholeheartedly recommend this class to anybody needing humanities, you will def. not be disapointed!!!
Let's see, I'll just use one word to describe the best teacher you will probably ever have......AWESOME!!!!!
Best teacher ever! I actually looked forward to class. He makes everything interesting, even if you don't think you'll like it. It was an easy A for me but I worked and studied for it. Care about the class and you will get an A. Tests are from class notes. Relatively easy journals every week. Lots of class participation. Take him, you won't regret!
Awesome professor! Makes you interested in the topics you are covering and he has great energy. Watch out though-he is very liberal and tries to rub it off on you. If you go to class and put in a little effort it's an easy A. Also if you are there every day he bumps you up a letter grade!
Why does everybody hate on Dr. Simmons for being a liberal? If you choose not to take either of his classes for that reason alone then there is seriously something wrong with you :-)
Ok, so the guy below me says that after the first class he "didn't learn anything." Well, maybe that's because you didn't pay attention to the lectures or chose not to become involved in class discussions (Even though this is, after all, a SPEAKING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM class) just because you disagreed with Dr. Simmons' political views. Grow up!!
Dr. Simmons has a passion for teaching that he delivers into his lessons. I had no interest in Humanities before this class. He made this not so fun subject into a very interesting subject. If I can possible take any other course with him, I will. He always has a smile on his face, and he is truly dedicated to each one of his students.
One of my favorite professors. I looked forward to class. As with all classes, take notes (he helps) and study them -2 min a day. Blatantly liberal, don't let it go to your head. He encourages student participation - so speak up, respectfully. Fun class, great professor, I would take him again.
Dr. Simmons is the best teacher! I took him for Humanities and Cinema and both classes were interesting and so fun. I wouldn't say he is a easy A but if you come to class and take notes everything is pretty straight forward. You gotta study a lot, though. I still have things burned into memory from these classes! He is such a nice guy. TAKE HIM!
Awesome class! I really can't stress how great Dr. Simmons is as both a professor and a person. I had the 8:00 am class last semester and this guy has so much energy that it's practically contagious! We watched a good mix of films, both new and old, and although the journals are a bit time consuming, they really aren't too hard. Take this class!!!
LOVEEEE DAVID. I'll admit some of the reading is boring and the journals can make you think but the class is very enjoyable as he does start off every class with a Colbert or Stewart clip. As long as you come to class and participate, you'll do fine.
Dr. Simmons is awesome! Very passionate about what he teaches. Young guy. Very open to his students. First half of class was easy, second half was a bit tougher, but i came out with an A and read my book once. If you show up for every class you get a full letter grade at the end. TAKE HIM!!
Dr. Simmons is THE MAN!!! This is quite possibly the best class I've ever taken in my life, and I look forward to taking his Humanities class in the fall. The journals are easy (anybody on here who complains about writing a 2-page journal per movie is just lazy), the movies are great, and Dr. S has 10x the energy of a H.S. teenager! Take him!!!
Dr. Simmons was a great professor. His attitude is extremely enthusiastic! He is helpful, always willing to work with you...his coursework is not demanding, difficult, but hey this IS college is it not? The only thing I got a little tired of was his constant push of Marxist ideology. Once is OK but 8 wks is too much...but good experience!
Simmons made a subject that I didn't think would interest me (art and humanities) and had me enthralled by it. Both humanities and cinema appreciation were fun and challenging. I highly recommend!
Amazing professor. He enjoys what he teaches, loves to hear feedback & is always willing to help. There are a good amount of journals to write but not too many & they're not difficult. He is an inspiring person to be around & I only wish he taught more classes! I highly recommend him to anyone taking Intro to Humanities or Cinema Appreciation.
Great instructor! There is a lot of work in this class, but the instructions are clear and he tells you what he expects. Great sense of humor, and is very knowledgeable about the subjects covered. If you do all of your work, and never miss a day you'll be in great shape!
Dr. Simmons is an amazing teacher. All of the movies he picked where extremely interesting to me except for 1 or 2. If you want an A write all your papers and show up every day for class. He tells you the first day of class "if you show up every day I will give you a whole letter grade difference"! How many deals do you get like this? Fun Class!!!!
Cinema Appreciation with Dr. Simmons was a surprisingly hard class. Take it anyways, it is absoutely worth it.
The love that he has for what he teaches is contagious. This class has changed the way i look at movies forever. Class discussions are pretty awesome! He is very clear on what he tells you he wants in the papers. had to write a paper almost every other week, but if you take notes in class and read the book, you will know exactly what to write!
I highly suggest getting Dr. Simmons. He is a great teacher
Dr. Simmons has a ton of energy and is a great teacher. Very easy class if you do the assigned work. Would take again.
Dr. Simmons was very enthusiastic about teaching humanities. You could tell he really enjoys this stuff. He does work fairly quickly, and often says he wishes we could spend more time on one subject. Tests could be a little tricky due to details. Oral presentation. Lots of notes and studying. Overall, great class and I ended up with an A.
Dr. Simmons loves teaching this class, and expects you to love learning it. You really have to know your stuff for the test. He also assigned nine, one to two page journals during the semester. If you don't like writing, don't take this class.
I loved this class. Dr. Simmons has a passion for what he's teaching. He makes it fun and is very theatrical. We had about 8 journal entries. I didn't think I was a great writer, but I typically received As and Bs on my papers. 3 tests. Recommend him to everyone! I'm taking him for cinema appreciation and art humanities in the fall semester :)
Dr. Simmons is amazing. I signed up for the class because I had to have it. By far the best Professor I have everd. Show up for class and you will pass!!!!!!
WONDERFUL TEACHER!! I loves what he does. I'll never look at movies the same way. For the journals go through the whole movie and use LOTS of examples that go along with what you were meant to look for and things previously taught. He picks great movies and likes for the students to have an opinion. Talk to him during the lesson, SUCH A FUN CLASS!!
Great teacher and he loves what he teaches. I wasn't very interested in humanities but he helps you understand and eventually take interest into it. Study the paintings(I would download them and memorize them). Also do all the journals and he lets you do extra credit journals. I would definitely take him again if I had to take a similar course.
A great teacher with a great personality. He makes boring stuff interesting, and the movies he picks (even the old ones!) are nice. He is very clear, isn't afraid to repeat himself if needed, and will happily help you understand a concept if you're having trouble. Overall, totally amazing teacher. I'd definitely recommend him. :)
Dr. Simmons is a great teacher! He is a very nice guy and will help you if you need it...although you probably won't. Class is not hard and is actually pretty interesting. You will see movies in a different way. If you take his night class you get to bring food which is awesome. He is also very left wing and anti capitalist, take that as you will.
He's nice and enthusiastic about movies, I just didn't enjoy the class because I don't like movies that much and hate writing. BUT if you like movies/don't mind writing, I totally recommend him! He also gives Jeopardy-style reviews which are helpful and pretty fun. Just be prepared to write 3 page reports on each movie. &He lets you eat in class!
Thought this was going to be my favorite class based on these reviews, but it turned out to be my least favorite. I will say his class isn't boring, but I felt like he only gave attention to those that were very outspoken. The journals were annoying, and the tests were unreasonable. Only other good thing is he raises a letter grade for attendance.
Dr. Simmons is awesome! One of the best teachers I have ever had! You have 8 two page essays and 3 tests. He does a Jeopardy review before the tests. If you try hard enough, you can fail this class.
This is such a fun class! Dr.Simmons is such an amazing professor!I highly recommend this class as one of your Humanities credits.
This is one of the best classes I have ever taken. Dr. Simmons is extremely passionate about film, and he wants his students to be excited about it, too. The reading is pretty heavy, and there are papers weekly, but the material is so interesting you forget you're working so hard. Highly recommend, Dr. Simmons makes this class very enjoyable!
Dr. Simmons is a GREAT teacher and I really enjoyed his class. He is only tough if you don't have a desire to do well, and if that is the case then get out of college or grow up. He actually helps you learn and is one of the best professors I have ever had.
Best teacher I have ever had, by far. Passionate about the class, and all of his classes in general. Very helpful, very clear (IF YOU ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION). Bumps up grade a whole letter for 100% attendance. Wasn't interested before taking the class, now I am. Loved loved loved! Amazing personteacher.
Dr. Simmons is one of the best professors I have ever had. Simmons only gives you two tests, but if you do not like to write a lot of essays, do not take him. The movies we watched were enjoyable and if you do not miss any classes he will raise your grade by a whole letter! Awesome teacher!
Dr. Simmons is a PHENOMENAL instructor. He is passionate about film and wants his students to be the same way. His movie selections are great for the theories and is always willing to make th extra effort to ensure clear understanding of the material. If you attend every class, he raises your grade by one letter in the end. HIGHLY recommend.
I took Simmons for Humanities and Cinema Appreciation, and made As in both of the classes. If you attend all his classes, you get a letter grade added, which is honestly what kept me at a A. In Cinema class, I had a hard time on the papers but I improved eventually. Expect various papers and at least 3 tests. He loves detail in your answers.
Took Simmons for humanities and Cinema. 2-3 test 8-10 journals. EVERYTHING he says in class is on the test, but not difficult to grasp. Pretty tough on grading journals but gives you two extra credit journals (30 out of 1000 pts each) and gives you an extra 100 points for never missing class. Down to earth, really wants students to actually learn.
Absolutely phenomenal professor. Very quirky, if you can't handle quirky, don't take his class. Knows what he's talking about. He makes film interesting, and his class is very engaging. Expect to write a paper every week, but as long as you use plenty of examples in your paper it is an easy A. Would recommend this professor a million times over.
Dr. Simmons is my favorite professor on this campus! I've taken both his Cinema Appreciation class and Intro to Humanities. Format is simple, tests are easy, and he is really passionate about what he teaches. He loves it, and it's really interesting. If you're into the humanities and you want a teacher who fires you up, he's your guy.
I've had him for humanities and cinema. He's a phenomenal teacher. Explains things well, very passionate about his subjects, and lots of extra credit (up to over two letter grades worth). Not shy about his opinions, but won't penalize you for disagreeing. A high grade is easily manageable; I had 100% at the end of humanities.
Dr. Simmons is one of the best college professors I've ever had. I took him for both Cinema Appreciation and Humanities, and loved both. His passion for teaching those subjects is infectious. There is a lot of writing involved, as he assigns many papers, but taking classes from him is well worth it.
He grades very easily on his journal entries, which are only two pages each. His lectures are entertaining and not boring. He gives A LOT of participation points. I recommend him 100%.
Dr. Simmons is a good humanities teacher. He is very knowledgable. However, His journals are a little intense for an Intro to Humanities class. Two pages, single spaced. He also makes comments about the newly elected president, Mr. Trump and about Christians that could very easily offend people that believe differently than him.
The only bad thing I can say about him is that he expresses his political views far to loudly far too often. Anything he can relate to Trump or blame him for he will.l and he expects everyone to be as passionate about the subject as he is.
A really good teacher, class isnt very hard. There are about 8 papers and two tests, and he allows extra credit papers. However, he expresses his views and opinions pretty heavily which can be frustrating.
Dr. Simmons teaches a good class. Class participation is the key to getting the best grades. He allows plenty of opportunity for extra credit, and will bump up your letter grade if you show up every day. The concepts are easy to grasp, so don't pigeon hole yourself by sticking to your conservative guns. You don't have to agree to understand.
Simmons is a great Humanities teacher and he's definitely passionate about the subject. Lectures are fun and interesting and class discussion is encouraged.
Wish I could tag him in more things than three. Dr. Simmons is an extraordinary teacher who is always willing to help you step by step throughout the entire class. Hands down the best professor I have had at NWFSC. But, I wont deny that you will be doing a LOT of reading in his class, but I also promise that if you do, you will get an A.
Simmons is a solid professor. He cares a lot about what he teaches & makes it easy to understand. I found his class super interesting, it was my favorite by far. But, it's a ton of work. Tons of papers & studying. He says you need to read the textbook but I never did & finished with an A. It's not easy. Pay attention & you'll be fine.
Dr. Simmons is a very kind person and a really good teacher. He really loves what he is teaching and al you really have to do is read and memorize art and their names. I only didnt pass because Im a terrible student. Just read what he tells you, more than once, look at the pictures and you get a good grade and have fun. Hes awesome.
Two tests that are fairly simple as long as you study the theories. There are 7 essays that you have to write about a movie with a theory that he goes over in class. He is an amazing teacher and I absolutely loved him, I would highly recommend him.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS GUY! I took him for an 8 am class and he made it so easy to focus and wake up. He definitely loves what he does and is always excited to share his knowledge with others. He gives very specific lecture notes and a study guide a week before the test. 10/10 would recommend!
Dr. Simmons is amazing! I took him for an eight am class! If I wasn't awake for his class I was shortly after it started! He brings so much energy & excitement to the class. He truly enjoys his job. You have approximately eight two page journals, the more detail you give the better the grade! He is big on participation and attendance. Well worth it
overall, good
He is such a funny professor. Loves what he does. He gives 2 page journals as homework 8 times throughout the semester. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities. If you dont miss a day of class he raises your final grade a whole letter grade. And if you do miss you can make up the class by coming to another class. Rarely gives perfect grades.
I CAN NOT TALK ABOUT ALL THE POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT DR. SIMMONS. HE MAKES THE CLASS SUPER INTERESTING AND FUN! I ACTUALLY LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THIS CLASS. I LOVE YOU DR. SIMMONS!
Dr. SImmons is one of the best professors on campus. He's so extremely helpful and his lectures are amazing. You definitely need to take notes, but everything he says and everything in the textbook is on the tests and journal entries so it's really easy to get good grades.
Simmons simply grades on opinion and if you did not share his values good luck. Although he is knowledgable in his filed I would not take his class. Get ready to write !!!
I really really enjoyed this class and Dr. Simmons is such a caring and insightful professor. There are a lot of papers so if you're looking for an easy A, this class is not it. You definitely have to work for your grade, but you learn so much in the process. This class really opens your eyes.
Dr. Simmons was a great professor. He knows a lot about what he is talking about and really loves the subject. He gives you everything you need to pass the class and if you mess up on something he tells you what you need to do. Although there are seven essays it's not as bad as it seems. Just watch the movie and you'll be fine.
I recently took his class and he is a super hard grader. He will give you tests on what felt like random things. You don't really learn about filmmaking after the first couple of lessons. The finals had more questions about gender and sexuality than movie talk. Gives little to no points for open-ended questions. Take at your own risk.
Pretty easy class as long as you pay attention to the notes (all posted within Blackboard so if you miss a day you can get information there) and just do the essays/discussions. Essays/discussion posts are very easy if you understand the concepts, which are not difficult in any way. Participate by answering a question or tell your opinion points.
You have a 2 page essay every other week that is graded harshly. Participation is a grade and he can take off if you are not in class. The second half of the semester all of the theories and how they were taught were very questionable. He is nice and extremely passionate abt what he teaches but I would not recommend.
Showing up is important. Total of 5 discussion posts, 7 film papers, and 2 tests. all is simple and easy, take notes. Watch a film, then write a 2-page essay. the more examples = the better study guides for both tests, roughly 40 multiple choice with 2 essay questions. easy class just pay attention to movies and participate.
I'm currently in his class, and I will say that he does lecture sort of "preachy" after sound theory. It can come off as he's trying to get you to agree with his political views. He's very communicative, and his class is essay heavy. It is possible you will get burnt out by the middle of the semester, but just keep trucking.
I loved Dr. Simmon's class, if you need help he's there. I took it online and it's honestly pretty easy and enjoyable. He teaches you about the arts while showing how history is influenced by it, though that may seem political it is- arts history, and nothing he states is untrue. He is very experienced in the art world. Highly recommend.
He is too strict on the participation. Very knowledgable (on some things) His teachings for sexuality and ideology theories were questionable.
Class material is not what I expected it to be. There is a lot of discussion on class, race, etc. The teacher grades by how many examples you use per paper, so go for quantity over quality. An A+ paper for me would be about 2000 words. There is an assignment due every week; either a discussion board or essay (7 essays total). Good class overall.
This professor uses the classroom as a platform to push his political agendas and ideologies. Very biased. I do not recommend.
I do not recommend this class!!! you have a 2 page single spaced size 12 font paper due every week and they are graded very harshly. He's very political and will argue about politics and religion. He also grades heavily on participation. don't take any of his classes!!!
Prof. Simmons is a great professor. Clear lectures from the textbook he knows well. 8 mandatory papers and 2 extra credit ones, but he graded very kindly, had minimal criteria, and were all on interesting topics. 3 tests that rely heavily on the lectures so PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS. Attendance influences grade. Seems intimidating but would recommend.
The "textbook" is modules that he wrote in canvas, so be mindful of that. The tests are hard, and you will most likely fail without completing the study guide. Study in advance because there are 2 essay questions on two specific works of art that are worth half of the test grade, and are completely memorization and analysis based.
Dr. Simmons is very nice and he makes the class enjoyable with his stories on the places he's been, and he's very accommodating. If you have an issue with anything, he's more than happy to help you, and he allows extra credit. He's very hilarious and he's an overall delight!
He makes you do a lot of papers, but the purpose of them is to help you study for the tests and they do a great job at that. You will have to study moderately hard but if you do his class is very easy. He is such an uplifting and bright person and he is very intelligent. He gives you a lot of opportunities to get a good grade. He cares about you.
The course material online is laid out in a very organized, methodical manner. As long as you read the material and try your best in the discussions and make thoughtful posts, you'll do great! He's a very generous grader and has lots of opportunities for extra credit!
Is the class hard? No. Is the professor difficult? Yes. READ READ READ the syllabus. Especially his bathroom rule. His rules and grading criteria constantly change. This made me never want to take him again.
Dr. Simmons is direct, knowledgeable, and truly invested in helping students think critically. Discussions were open and respectful. I always felt encouraged to form my own views so long as I could support them. If you are willing to engage with complex ideas and step outside of your comfort zone, this course is absolutely worth it!
