He is a good teacher. Not very hard and not very easy. He explained the lecture well. If u read his lecture note from the net, I guarentee u pass the class.First two weeks, I had a hard time understanding his accent. Then I become familiar. Very energetic teacher.
horrible professor, tricks his students and makes up new rules at the last minute during final or exams.
He is good teacher. You can get A if you go over his note.
Interesting class. He knows how to get the job done.
Very tricky in tests-african style!By the end of the semester, you will be aware of the trendiest fashion wear in africa that season.
I got B's for both the classes. He is hard but at the sane time one of the best teachers at laney. Towards the end of the semester when he sees the class average is low he usually gives questions for the final and the last test. he then picks questions from the study questions...sweet and if you are must you will study the question inside out
I took with him ec 01 and I regret being in his class. His tests were not related to what learnen at all.
he has certain class rules & is pretty strict about enforcing them. i took him in the summer & it seemed to be pretty tough in the beginning, but if you take good notes (the book was useless) you will do fine on the exams. he doesnt try to trick you. he gave us study questions for exam3 & the final & took questions straight off them for the tests.
If you want to learn a lot and get an easy A,stay away from his class!!! He likes to trick people, and i had a hard time to understand his accent. i will suggest u to take econ at some other colleges because he seems the only econ teacher in laney
Always late for class. Says he encourages questions but gets annoyed when you ask them. Unfriendly demeanor. Still... very knowledgeable and explains topics in a clear, concise manner that is easy to understand.
As long as u got the pass paper, u can get an easy A
dun take him. i was hoping i would have a fun teacher for econ. he is so boring! and he has a bad accent. he gives out useful lecture and makes sure students have enough time to copy it down. but... i dun reccomend anyone to take him. useless class unless u dun really care bout econ...
great teacher! he is very funny and helpful. he makes the whole class interesting. however, he has quizs every week. the exams are hard too.
Lots of graphs. Pay attention because he feels like everyone should understand it and it is the most simple thing in the world even though he has been doing it for ever and we just started.
He knows his stuff but if you don't take notes, it's a wrap.
One of the best teachers on campus. Very dedicated and I really respect that he teaches four classes in a row on one day plus an evening class. He looks very serious and strict, but he is really nice, helpful, and funny. Take his class!!
He is a really good teacher and made the material really relatable. I would definitely reccomend him.
He's very generous and nice to students haha..He try to teach everything about econ. you can learn a lot from him. I really recommand him
While I took this class intersession, I did keep up with the homework. Simon is an instructor I would endorse.
I love Simon. he is not easy however econ is not easy. if you take notes, and write down his examples they will be on the test. he tries to make students understand econ instead of breezing through it. he is interesting and makes it understandable. he is not hard but economics isnt that easy. i took His summer course and recieved an A.
Very very good professor. Extremely passionate about the subject of economics and lectures straight from memory. A bit quirky and has a twisted sense of humor, but underneath the seemingly mean surface lies a good person and a good teacher. Those of you complaining about the difficulty, try taking a few chemistry and physics courses!
Lazy and arrogant. Consistently late, and takes a condescending and sometimes aggressive attitude towards students. As department head, I think he sets a terrible example.
He's pretty good. I had to take the class, and he seemed reasonable, and had a fair grading policy!
I used to take both Econ 1 & 2 classes. He's very intellective and humor. His note is very useful for exams. He explains lessons very clearly.
second test was really tricky.overall, hard class.
his class is not easy at all if you dont have pass paper.he is really tricky.but if u can get pass paper itz a piece of cake!
i took him during the summer for micro and macro and both classes were a breeze. he has an accent and can be rather strict at times but if you pay attention and take good notes, you will be able to get an A easily. His exams are directly off his lecture notes and if you go talk to him, he is more than happy to help you.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM. HE IS JUST AWSOME!
I love Econ but i didn't like this teachers teaching style. His exams were not completely related to the lecture. He didn't let some of the students use calculators during the exam because the calculators looked too advanced.Alot of students seemed to fall asleep during his lectures because he was rather boring. Mr. Itakazu was more upbeat&involved.
He was really funny and most of his tests were based on his lectures. He was really nice and he taught very well emphasizing the main points of his lesson.
Although I got A eventually, I spent all time reading and going over material since there were a lot of cheat questions on quiz and exam. If you really want to learn something, take this class. Otherwise,do not! What'more, he has a accent that sometimes makes you confused. He don't allow people taling in the class and attence is mandatory.
Extremely friendly and knowledgeable!I took both econ 1 and 2 with him.He makes the class so fun and relaxing. He also treats students fairly, and exams will not be too difficult if you study in advance.I learned so much from his classes.STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!
He demonstrates a clear mastery of the subject matter. However his is almost entirely incapable of actually teaching the material. He consistently lectures from memory and is incapable of digressing when a student needs clarification. If you may need help understanding the material, he cannot help. He's late every day and consistently unavailable.
Not a very helpful teacher at all. It is obvious he does not like teaching. He explains concepts clearly enough, but fails to put information into palatable form for students who are NOT business or Math majors. Asks a lot of rhetorical questions, treats students like they're dumb, and takes cheap shots. Not very approachable.
He is an amazing teacher. He clearly knows what he is talking about. Teaches concepts comprehensively and he always warns early in advance exactly what to expect on the exams and quizes. You can also tell that he loves teaching coz he is often cheerful and fun in class.
He's unfriendly, not helpful. He always late 20 minutes and even up to half an hour comes to class.
He is always late (no kidding!). He teaches well but most of the things you learn in class are not the same during tests. The questions in the exams are twisted, indirect, just perfect enough to make you not get the correct answer. I just regret that I waited too long to drop the class. I used to enjoy taking Economics classes but not any more!
What a nice guy! One of the best professors I have ever had in Laney. As long as you understand his lectures, quizzes and exams will not be difficult at all. He was indeed always late, but that gave me 10 to 20 more minutes for sleeping... ^^ I enjoyed so much during both his econ 1 and 2 classes.
Extremely unprofessional, cocky, and self absorbed. He doesn't care about his students and he will tell you this himself. Worst teacher ever!!!!
This rating is for an online course. A good part of my disappointment is not w/Mr. Simon, but with the way the course material is presented (not, read the book, teach ourself) and discussion/interaction of concepts (none to speak of).
Although I can tell that he is very knowledgeable about Economics, in general, he does not do a good job teaching it. He came ten minutes late and came one hour late to our final without giving additional time. By the way, the last test and final are both on the same day...
He is not just a good teacher!!!
This guy knows his stuff... but, his failure is in his inability to translate what it is that is required to read from the book, into how he teaches the class. I have no doubt he knows economics, but he's a hard ass and should not be taken if you are just trying to maintain your grade. Ask him if he likes French fries from France.
Wow i took this teacher two times because i did not have any other options. Big mistake. worst teaching skills and bad everything. Just listen to the rest of the people here, they arent lying.Only way you can pass his class is actually reading from the book. Worst teacher ever !!! He knows his stuff but doesnt know how to teach
Do yourself a favor, do NOT take his class. It seems as though he has a photographic memory and his teaching methods reflect that. he will try to trip you up on the tests, that's not what a teacher is meant to do, that's not why I go to school. He gave me an F and I'm a strait A student. He shouldn't be in this line of work!
Not exaggerating, he is one of the BEST instructors. His talent lies in an extremely thorough style & a contagious passion for economics. Methodic, precise, and nothing short of inspiring. Was disappointed by the final: based on study questions word for word. Felt like he stopped continuing to demand nothing but the best from his students.
I HATE THIS TEACHER.. CAUSE HE.. I NEED TO DROP THIS CLASS AND RETAKE THE OTHER ECON CLASS..~
The tests are very difficult. The course material is a little hard but he just goes very fast. He has humor at times and the class is not that boring. He likes to twist up the test questions because he wants us to know the material, forward, backwards and inside out. You have to spend alot of time studying independently to pass. goodluck
His teaching is sometimes incomplete, he is fair but it is like his tests are made so you can not do well, no matter how hard you study. He seems like he wants to help the students but he doesn't really help much. He doesn't give extra credit or homework which would help your grade. I would not take a class he teaches again unless i have to.
David Simon, is a great teacher! I took him fall20l1 He repeats and explains anything that you dont understand. I definitely learned alot from his class. I wish I studied a little harder, because I wouldv'e gotten an A.take GOOD notes! He gives frequent quizzes so that the class would study more often. I disagree with all the negative comments (:
Spent as much time talking about how he knew what students did after class and elephant meat as he did economics, nearly got dropped because of a scheduling conflict with work, and all in all wasn't a great teacher. Would not take again.
Recommend to take his summer class, even though it went very fast but he tried to make up for the grades at the final. The exams were tricky at first, but if you can memorize all the notes that he gave, you should be fine. The material he doesn't cover won't appear in the quiz and exams. He's quite a fair guy.
Excellent professor. Is passionate about his teachings. He is a tough teacher, but one who really wants to help his students learn. Attend his office hours. He is very supportive and encouraging.
He is an instructor trying to teach students by understanding so trying to understand the concept in class is very important also the way you can get a good grade. The other good thing was no homework!
The tests are very difficult. The course material is a little hard but he just goes very fast. He likes to twist up the test questions because he wants us to know the material, forward, backwards and inside out. You have to spend alot of time studying independently to pass. By the way, the last test and final are both on the same day... goodluck!
He cannot explained with his students when they ask s/t and he doesn't use a textbook.
Easy Instruction, low level English, giving simple Examples. Reading Textbook couldn't help, couldn't connect his instruction via textbook. BUT, The tests are in college level of English and complicated questions. I am ESL, rely classes and readings. I required more time to convert his English to the words in tests. 2months learn nothing waste!
First of all his test will be one of the hardest test you will ever take. However, if you take GOOD NOTES, he is a fair teacher. Everything in the exams is covered during class. There is no homework, but I highly suggest to spend an hour a week, to study material covered in class. If possible don't take econ1 &2 together but take both with him
Great teacher! HARD TESTS! BUT always open to answer questions outside class during his office hours, specially if form a study group. Econ is hard regardless of where you take it, but test material is covered in class. Take good notes, form a group and go to his office in your spare time, and you will have an A. Good Luck! NO HOMEWORK.
Honestly, first I was nervous when I took his class as everyone on this website says he is not good. But some of my friends who are good in studies recommended him so I took it. Boom! He is so good. He explains so well and gives good notes. All the material that is covered in th class will be on the test. So just study hard. BEST TEACHER!
Communicating with him was really difficult. And i felt like i didn't have the help i needed. It was like a university lecture hall class. I need to fin for myself.
super horrible teacher, bad english, tough exams. I would never suggest you to take his class.
Lectures are very clear you dont need your textbook. Make sure you pay attention. There are quiz every week and its multiple choice make sure you are not late for class, if you miss the quiz there is no make up. And for test he lets you pick the format of the test.
His class is hard but not harder than taken Econ anywhere else. In fact, I took Econ at a CSU at failed and I was a straight A student. Subject is difficult period, but he is soooo good in explaining concept that you wont need a book. Take him before you transfer! I have not had any econ professor that is nearly as good as him.
This professor was helpful to a certain extent. He would reply to you ASAP through Aplia. I took his class over the summer online, and it was quite tough. But his grading policy does give some wiggle room.
Very easy and the lecture was clear.
Surprised about his ratings ! I took him and was so excited to take the course, especially because I was looking forward to him as a teacher. But he was LATE for almost EVERY SINGLE CLASS ! Some may think thats good, but it effected lecture time. He had great quality of knowledge for us, but man it was a good experience... :(
He is so wonderfully straight forward. he lines out exactly how to get an A, gives you all the material u need to know very clearly (don't be scared by his accent he is easy to understand AND I didn't even open textbook once). go to class and actively listen, study a little and you will get an A no prob. tip: first test is the hardest.
Very knowledgeable. He is funny and will answer any questions you have. Tests are not easy but study the notes you'll be fine. If he asks "I am a nice guy right?" answer yes! That means he's going to tell you whats on the upcoming test or is going to give extra credit! The textbook is helpful (amazon!) Study hard and you'll do well :)
Currently taking his class online. So much tech issues and goes really fast. Quizzes literally every week like he really thinks that you are only taking his class and not others as well. Very late replying back and is very sarcastic and rude. Stressing about getting a C or W. Stay away!
I would not recommend taking this course online, I have found this very challenging to teach to myself since there is only the book to learn from. At least he drops your three lowest quiz scores, but since there is no homework, getting an A in this class is very challenging. Also this course moves very quickly!! So don't fall behind
Just take good note and pay attention to his lecture; especially when he writes something on the board or says it will be in the quiz. He is very funny and inspirational. DO RECOMMENDED HIS CLASS.
Prof. Simon lays out the entirety of what you need to know very clearly in lecture. If you make sure you take notes on what he writes on the board, you will have the fundamentals to get a good grade in the course. He speaks with an accent and can be hard to understand sometimes, but he takes time to clarify himself. He sparked my interest in Econ.
When we ask him some questions or want him repeat again, he always said he forget about it or really mad at us about we ask questions. If you didn't have a good score on the first exam, you are almost GAME OVER. Even your second or the third exam get an A, you will still receive a B or even worse. He doesn't give any extra credit to students
No homework credit. The class is graded purely on quizzes and exams.
Go to class and take notes and you will pass. No group projects, no homework, and you do not need to buy the book. Weekly quizes and 4 exams. On the last two exams Prof. Simon gave the class study questions taken straight from the actual exam. Great teacher, i definitely learned a lot from this class.
He was awesome, helpful and friendly. He helps students in their individual situations. Wonderful personality. He is just great.
He is an awesome teacher, who truly cares for the students. He treats every student with respect. His lectures are very comprehensive. I strongly recommend him.
Simon is a great lecturer and allowed for me to really enjoy Microeconomics. His tests are all multiple choice and if you come to class, pay attention, and read the textbook in a careful manner then you shouldn't have too much trouble.
professor David Simon is really good economics professors. his lectures are so clear and he also provides you notes too. you don't need a book if you concentrate on lecture. there are extra credit questions only in exams, nothing else. grades are based on exams so do your best in exams.
I do not agree above students comments because his class is a terrible class. I never met this kind of teacher. his pronunciation is too bad. If you go to his class, you get frustrated. please choose a different teacher.
Great for people w; heavy course-/work-load: minimal HW. Show up, take good notes, *ask questions when you're not clear*, review before tests to do well. Some content is crystal clear, some: not so much. He's nice, passionate about econ and willing to help. He slowed the first section of our class down to help students get used to his accent.
He's a very knowledgeable and funny professor with an accent but you get used to it after a while. His class is straight lecture (homework was assigned 1-2x). If you show up to class (don't skip!), take notes, and STUDY the notes, you should be able to pass. His quizzes/exams are based exactly off the lecture notes so it shouldn't be too tricky
I took both econ 1 and 2 from Professor Simon. His class is funny and he care about his students a lot. If you skip classes, he would remind you to keep up with the class. His quizzes are easy while tests are quite hard, but he may give study questions which are useful. I have to say, if you listen to the class, things won't be difficult for you.
Take him, follow exactly what he asks. yeay you got an A
You must pay attention in his class, even if it seems boring, PAY attention. It contains a lot of vital information for his quizzes and tests. You have to also read the textbook also since he will not cover everything in his lectures.
i wanted to learn something in econ, and this guy knows his stuff. he's very enthusiastic about it, but the application is not very good in teaching. he gives you the fundamentals, but it's up to you to apply the connections. and he doesn't explain it very well. you should study the graphs carefully and know it inside out if you want to pass those.
Professor Simon is a very knowledgeable guy, but from the material and lectures, he can be very confusing. I had a very hard time connecting the pieces together during his exams. Sadly the only positive thing is that he is probably the best econ teacher Laney has to offer. I would seek other econ teachers first before this class. Not an easy A
David Simon is an excellent professor because his lecture is very clear. Economic usually is hard subject even though Simon teaches very well. if you take his class, you go on time his class, listen carefully but do not use your phone. you can get an A. he maintains a good relationship with students.
David Simon' economics always are excellent. I really recommend his classes.
I recommend to David Simon for economics. If you go to class and listen carefully, you get an A.
I wouldn't recommend to take Econ 2 (micro-econ) with David Simon. He is a nice guy, but when it is exam time he becomes a tiger. very scary. There is no such thing as cheating in his class. Also, he doesn't write anything down on the board so you must be the one writing which means you gotta listen carefully to what he says.
So many feedback down below says you'll get an A if you just pay attention to his lecture. Easier said than done. If you're not the type of person that reads the textbook or take notes. I suggest yall not to take him
Summer class online. Few interactions with him. Class was okay, I passed with a good grade. But didn't take much away from the class at all. Not very interactive and he wasn't super involved. Emailed him about a question regarding a quiz and he answered impatiently and in a demeaning manner.
not "piece of cake" class however he's a great lecturer which help you to understand the concept better, have to listen attentively to his lecture and write it down. You will find yourself learn a lot in his class at the end and have a strong fundamental knowledge in econ which is good for transferring and well prepared for intermedate econ classes
durable
David Simon is a great instructor. Read the material before you attend class. Pay close attention to the lectured material. Relatively speaking, before David Simon I was a lay person.. LOL... Funny guy !
Took summer online. The concepts are kind of hard if its your first read though but he is super unengaged in the summer and there are no lecture videos or mandatory discussions. All Quiz and test. Also he blocks you before the free trail period ends. No warning. SO pay as soon as you can.
From a review below, "If you're not the type of person that reads the textbook or take notes. I suggest yall not to take him". In other words, if you're in college and don't want to do the bare minimum then don't take him. He is a very proficient lecturer. Repeats and emphasizes the points he wants to get across; giving you time to jot it down.
This teacher repeats things for people to write it down then chides them for not printing out the notes he provides and practically says verbatim in class. The teacher did not tell students what their grade was before the drop date, even after prompting.
Took David Simon for Econ 1 spring of 2020. Before we were moved online, he would come late to every single class and then lecture the entire class. Not great at explaining concepts. Yells while lecturing. As an online teacher, he would keep the class 30-45 minutes extra passed time slot every class on zoom, even though I had another class after.
The professor explains the materials very thoroughly. However, he is a tough grader. If you want to get a good grade in this course, I high recommend skimming through the chapter in the textbook before class. Also, make sure to study for the quizzes and exams, because those are the only two categories will be graded on.
David Simon is very passionate about what he teaches. I personally enjoyed his mini stories he tells during lectures to lighten up the room with smile. His lectures are very interesting and engaging. If you find Econ to be a boring subject, Id say take Econ 1 and 2 with him . It wont be boring at all.
Overall, Professor Simon is a fine teacher in his lectures. The issue arises from his absolute disrespect for students time. He moves classes to different days on a whim, often overlapping with other classes, holds class more than 30 minutes late regularly and has little respect for your weekend. In short good teacher but make sure you've got time
Lectures are repeated and bored but a nice guy in general. Only grade by quizzles, exams, and some HW. No E.C or make up works but you can drop lowest scores of them. Not a hard class if you understand the concepts clearly. Useful class notes & accessible in Office hour. Little stubborn, only wants the answers in his way, not the student's ways.
Agree other review. Bad control on class length. Watch his lecture records with 2x speed to save your time. Didn't attend to any stream lectures but went to office hours a couple times and I think that might be counted as participation credits. Which boosted a B+ to A-. Show you care about grades, class subjects, and he might help you at the end.
Took in person before COVID. Class primarily consists of exams and some quizzes, and almost all his exam questions are based on his lectures. Take good notes during his lecture as much of what he says (which he will often repeat) will be verbatim on the exams and quizzes, and you will be okay. Take the time to internalize concepts, and you'll be ok
In the beginning I thought he was a tough professor but through the semester he shows he really cares if the students grasp the concepts and understand the material. He is very transparent about what will be tested and he gives you the opportunity to use your notes so if you fail then it is your own fault. Its funny as well to me. Put in the work.
Professor David Simon is very passionate about the subject. A textbook is not necessary. Take good notes and pay attention during the lectures and it should be fine.
I took Prof. Simon's Economics 1 in the Spring of 2021. At the beginning, his requirements were more stringent. However, he would reduce the difficulty of the actual tests according to the situation of the class. He sometimes provides practice questions before the actual exam, but not every practice question will match the real exam question.
Dr. Simon has been teaching at Peralta for over ten years. Honestly, he's one of the best economics professors at Peralta. Be sure to take good notes because the content of his four exams is highly related to his lecture notes. He often reminds students to take notes in class. Over 90% of the content will appear in the exam when he reminds you. : )
Simon is knowledgeable about Economics and his lectures are thorough. The quizzes are difficultly worded and hard to answer in the time allotted. I dropped the course before the first exam for fear of a low GPA. I feel that this professor is better suited for Econ majors and not undergraduates.
We have 3 exams; each exam has 50 questions, he will drop lowest one. We have weekly quizzes; each quiz has 15 questions, he will drop the lowest one. We have one final (50 questions). He gave us study questions for exam 3 and the final. His English pronunciation is not standard. If you are not a native English speaker, you may have a hard time.
Great lecturer. I came away understanding the material. I thought wording on some test questions was confusing and spent time worrying about that rather than econ. Seems to be pretty freaked out about students cheating. You'll have to request 1:1 time to review test questions you got wrong. A little impatient when explaining.
This class was mandatory for Bus Admin certificate/degree. Prof. Simon's lectures were great and you have to take notes because it will show up on the exams. I didn't purchase the online course book but I bought a regular textbook to supplement the lectures. The quizzes were a little challenging for me but the course was still informative.
Took the summer course, super hectic because I had a quiz or exam every other day for 6 weeks straight. The quizzes are quite difficult but you do learn quite a bit. This professor is more on the difficult side but there's a lot of supplemental resources. Sent out email reminders every time there was a quiz due and I honestly appreciated that.
Difficult! You can tell he has an old school African method of teaching. He knows the material well himself. However, the tests are rigorous. Long lectures! Had to drop. Class was unbearable. Did not feel like an entry level course. Unless you know Econ and Calculus well, stay away!
I loved Professor Simon's lecture style so much, I took ECON 1 and then ECON 2 with him. He repeats his point multiple ways as he moves through the material, so you don't miss important points. The material is challenging, but I found his quizzes and tests mostly fair, and an A was achievable if you do all the assigned work and watch the lectures.
Prof Simon has taught this for nearly 30 years and it shows. He groks the material. His lectures are thorough; he often repeats points so you get it. There is only basic math involved. If you do your part---attend the lectures, watch the videos, and organize your thoughts---you will do well in the course. And understand macroeconomics to boot.
I thought the course wasn't too difficult. It was an easy "A" as someone who took economics in high school. However, the course can be difficult for someone who has never been exposed to economics, so I definitely would not take this course with David. No late work is accepted, and textbook is available; but not required.
David Simon is a solid professor - his lectures are engaging and he breaks down the material well. Take good notes, use the textbook, and try Unstuck ai for extra practice - it really helps prep for the challenging exams. The class is manageable if you stay on top of the work.
Tough class if you're not solely a full time student. Three exams worth 20% each, final exam worth 25% and weekly quizzes worth 15%. You're expected to take quizzes/exams during scheduled dates and if something comes up there are absolutely no makeups. If you're juggling work or other core classes, do not recommend this professor.
Accepts absolutely no late work and all quizzes/exams had to be taken in a 24-hour period. It's tough completing Prof. Simon's course if you work full-time or have other priorities outside of school; it'd be nice if all assignments were unlocked and you could do them on your own time, but they don't and that was the biggest reason I had to drop.
I took Prof. Simon's online classes for both macro and microeconomics. The mandatory attendance feels pointless for zoom lectures which have recordings, so definitely take the asynchronous version. Grades are entirely test based (of which tests are only open for a day) so you have to be keeping up with those.
Tends to be coy and withholding w/ information, creates multiple choice quizzes/exams w/o the correct option, consistently late, inept w/ canvas features, very defensive and does not take ownership of errors, will roll eyes and/or speak over students when asked questions.
Very good lecture, good at teaching, horrible tests -stuff he does not cover, and super tricky. Grades based on test
The only things graded are exams and quizzes every 2-3 days, so there's no HW to help your grade. There are notes for each lecture, but they only cover half the lecture material. He doesn't give quiz answers back, so you don't know what you got wrong. The average grade was around a B. No community college macro econ class should be this hard.
Quizzes often appeared to have questions without a correct answer (i.e. "none of the above" was almost always an option, whether or not the correct answer was in the selection). No quiz answers shared, unless requested. Many quizzes had no students achieve max points.
