Best bio professor at UD. Knows his stuff, manages to know every student's name, always eager to help and clarify complex topics, tests are VERY similar to last year's! My favorite prof by far.

great teacher, very helpful great to talk to and tries to remember a minimum of 50 names. practice tests are easier than the actual test. all and all if you can get up for his classes then he is a great teacher

Nice guy, great teacher, keeps you awake at 8am. Tests are tricky, but manageable. REALLY knows his stuff. Tests on understanding, not memorization. If you understand concepts...you can get a B w/o reading text. GO TO LECTURE!

Exams are challenging, but previous years exams help - dont memorize them, study them for content. EXCELLENT prof - probably the best bisc professor at delaware

Not gonna lie, this class is really hard. Must actually understand and be able to use. Really nice guy though, GO TO REVIEW SESSION! Class is a must, even at 8am. Bummer, I know. Being a non-Bio major, most of its way over my head but if you're smart, a B- should be easy to pull off.

never went once since it was at 8am so ended up with a C. not as bad a class as everyone makes it out to be, i could of done much better. stern but fair.

very hard course--practice exams are key for studying for exams...great teacher and extremely helpful in every way....very fair...definitely notices effort and dedication to his class

Dr. Smith is one of the best professor I have had. He really wants people to understand, but he doesn't want you to take the easy way out. Just have to do the practice exams, which are exactly like the real exams just with words switched around.

Awesome professor, very understanding. Getting up @ 7:45 sucked but keep in mind that with this guy, flattery will get you everywhere. Sit in front & answer a question or two (or show up to office hours) & he'll love you for the rest of the class.

I love this guy! I suggest everyone should take his class if you need Microbiology. I'm a much more math oriented thinker, usually I do not care for Bio, but this class has changed my mind. TAKE HIM!!!!

if you just listen in lec, you'll do well on exams. doing old exams and going to class should get you a pretty easy A. the labs can be hard (the quizzes), but all in all this class is pretty easy. some Q's on tests are from old exams exactly. just pay attention and you'll do fine. this guy's good.

I really adore this man. He takes an 8:00a.m.Bio class and makes it really interesting. Exams are not bad I have recieved 2 A's so far, but lab is a ****. To much work, not enough time, etc... But I do recomend taking this class, but only with Dr. Smith.

Really tough class, especially being in nursing, but Prof. Smith happened to be an outstanding professor. I had to put a lot of work in to stay on top of things, but I would still recommend him. If you are a nursing student, just be prepared for a really challenging class.

Dr. Smith is AWESOME! Yes, you have to work hard, but he is knowledgeable and is you enjoy the subject matter, you'll do fine. Lab is great if you have a good TA. BTW: Smith knows ALL the baseball stats in the world...even wrote a book!

First test is hard because lack of time but the other exams aren't bad if you went to class. He is extremely nice and helpful at his office hours. The practice test problems are very similar to actual exam.

Awesome professor. Makes an 8am class interesting. Tests are very fair and not tricky, the first test is a little hard because its long but the other tests are easier. You'll need to study but as far as bio class goes its not hard, you just need to study like with any class.

This class was an experimental class, but hopefully the University will keep it. It was very interesting. The professor gives you an outline of what you need to know before each exam and he also post the overheads online, so if you miss a class or two it probably wouldn't matter.

Either you get it (and do really well) or you don't (and fail everything despite how hard you study).He's a super nice guy, extremely helpful at office hours (do this if you're doing poorly on his tests! He's really helpful outside of class. He doesn't really explain how to do the problems in lecture and you basically have to teach yourself how.

Experimental class excellent & hope UD keeps it on. LOVED how he let the professionals in the field teach the classes instead of him pretending he knew it all. Exams easy & he was very understanding of personal situations. Great 2 get 2know on personal level. never spoke from the Ivory tower. Would recommend him if they offer forensics again!

Class was extremely interesting and easy. I like how he didn't teach all the classes, but rather had professionals come in and lead class.

University should definitely offer this course again. He put together a great group of guest lecturers that provided a wide variety of topics. And Dr. Smith was very fair and chose not to be incredibly specific in terms of info for the tests.

Amazing class and hope that UD realizes what a great course it was and continues to allow it to be taught. I love Dr. Smith, he's a great prof.

best prof at delaware. hes tough but all 400 bio classes are. study old tests. go to him for help. attend review sessions. study the book. hardest bio class ive taken but id take this prof again any day. ive taken 3 classes with him cuz hes the best.

Had him for genetics/micro. BEST professor, absolutely love him! Very helpful, go to him for help during office hours. Any bio class is challenging, but put in the work and you can do well. Make sure you look at old tests. For micro, outline why wrong answers are wrong (test qs are usually re-worded, be careful tho!). Genetics-go to study sessions!

BEST professor in the Bio department, Its a challenging class, but all 400 level bio classes are, if you do the work, he's more than happy to help you. GO TO STUDY SESSIONS, make sure you study the old exams he gives you a week before the test, they help A LOT. Overall, a hard class but worth it and there is no better professor to take it with.

i had him for genetics, micro, and bacterial evolution and he is by far my favorite prof here. very personable and knowledgeable. excellent at teaching the material. must study, go to class, and read tho to get a good grade

Amazing professor. Never fell asleep for a lecture - presents material very well. Difficult class (all BISC classes 400+ are) unless you keep up with the readings and go to his office hours. Beware the 1st Exam in Genetics - use the practice exams he gives you. You WILL learn Genetics in this class.

Great class, except the middle third on taxonomy which is very tedious. Not as hard as in micro and genetics. 3 tests, all essays, based on lectures and assigned articles. Most of the class got A's and B's. Take it if you wanna learn something different and interesting and not the usual classical stuff

Very interesting lectures, I didn't fall asleep once and I had him for an 8am. Knows what he teaches and makes it interesting by default somehow. Very easy to want to learn in his class, highly recommended.

Great professor, he's been teaching for over 30 years. He really knows the subject material, but carefully emphasizes the important information. He makes sure his instruction is very clear, because the subject can get pretty murky. He's great to talk to and he makes himself very available for help, especially right before exams.

The best professor by far! He knows his stuff & is very passionate about Genetics. He really wants you to learn. Exams are tough!! Not an easy class but he makes an 8am class very exciting every time. He does NOT curve!! I learned a lot in this class. Make sure you do the assigned homework questions. Do practice exam. He is always ready to help!

Dr. Smith is somehow able to take an 8am class about bacteria and make it interesting enough to stay awake for! His lectures are very interesting, and he is very easy to find outside of class if you have questions. Exams are tough, but he gives you old exams to practice off of.

Liked him so much for 300 I took him again! Wants his students to do well, holds study sessions @library the night before exams. Gets along with students and is very helpful to them. Enthusiastic about what he teaches, tests are very fair, easy to do well if you study. Will clarify anything you ask. Good teacher, smart prof, great guy.

Dr. Smith is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his area of study and it clearly shows in his teaching. The material is challenging, but you should do okay if you pay attention and take good notes. The lab section of this class is horrendous, but you just have to grit your teeth and do it. Smith makes 8am class not entirely terrible.

I had heard that this class was hard, but it is very easy. If you know how to read, you will do well. If you do not know how to read, you will do well.

Take really good notes in this class, the exams come right out of lectures. Also, study the old test really well (understand all the questions). Overall, he explains things well and is willing to help you. Not too hard of a class, but make sure you study and UNDERSTAND concepts. Read over the assigned readings, it may help clear up some concepts.

Dr. Smith is very passionate about what he teaches and usually willing to help. Make sure you go to class and take good notes because tests come straight form the notes. You won't even need to read the book. He is very good at explaining things so that they make sense too. If you have to take this class, definitely take it with Smith!

TAKE SMITH!!! This class is a difficult class, but an A is possible. Dr. Smith is extremely helpful and for an 8 AM keeps everyone wide awake. One of the best biology teachers I've ever had I recommend him!! Take Notes on everything, study practice exams, read book and you will get a A or B

The man came off very distant, cranky, and rude. Can recall when he actually kicked me out of his office for asking too many question. Regardless, the guy is still the best BISC403 prof in UD. His lectures are typically clear, and his exams are hard but doable if you put in time with notes, the book, and the practice exams. Scored a B. So can you.
