Tries hard to be funny, but still makes class very fun!! His adorable dog, Angel also makes several guest appearances. Dr. Soren LOVES what he does and iis a brilliant archaeologist and professor. TAKE ANY CLASS YOU CAN FROM HIM!
Awesome professor! He makes class fun, but yet informative at the same time! One of the best professors at UA!
Very knowledgeable about both film and art history, but his lectures are uneven and tend to focus less on the artistic and cinematic movements and more on personal interests. I would avoid ARH 329 with Soren.
Argh. Incredibly disorganized presentation of an amazing volume of information. Turns what should be an interesting course into a nightmare of scrambled timelines and random facts you may or may not be tested on.

Excellent prof who gives you all you need to know in advance of the quizzes/exams.
Another class of memorizing huge amounts of dates and names, with tests over just a few out of the many. Nothing exciting or linked to a rich sense of history.
Dr. Soren is awesome! He teaches with such passion that it is impossible to not want to learn in his class.
He's funny
I didn't really like learning about Romans, and there is a lot of memorization. However, Dr. Soren is always making jokes and I liked that he brought his dog to class, was always very polite and helpful, and definitely takes time to talk to students.
Clas 329 and An Etruscan course as well and an independent study. I took a total of 4 courses with Dr. Soren and he is hands down my fav professor. His lectures are funny and informative. Yeah it's a lot of information but he's very clear about what he wants and what's important.
Dr. Soren is one of the most amazing professors I have ever studied with. He is passionate, funny, and extremely intelligent!
All Dr. Soren's classes go over lots of the same info. So if u have taken 1 you might as well take another! He is a fun teacher..but you do have to study!
Best professor I've ever had!! He's the funniest guy on campus. His dog, Angel is absolutely adorable! Seriosuly, he brings his dog to class, how cute is that!!!
Great teacher!!! One of the best professors I've ever had. He teaches with such passion and he made a HUGE class seem personal. I loved coming to his class and learning and most of all laughing. I highly recommend this teacher, take as many classes as possible with him!
Dr. Soren is a hilarious older man. He is lots of fun in class (Art History Cinema)--he tells jokes and dances and sings and shows lots of videos. He is brilliant, but makes the class easy as long as you go. Tests are easy, but only if you've been to lecture.
Great teacher...
the best teacher I had during my college career...still remember most things I was taught and would highly recommend Dr Soren, a true renaissance man and most importantly an incredible person!
the best teacher I had during my college career...still remember almost everything I was taught and would highly recommend Dr Soren...the only class I remember where all the seats were full (around 300) every class...that says it all!
He's very passionate about his classes and will show it during the lectures. He does have a lot of information to remember, but most of it is interesting and isn't found in other classes.
One of the most hilarious/effective professors I have ever had. Angel is also one of the cutest dogs.
Soren is the best professor you or anyone you know will ever have.

Amazing class. Very easy. Cute dog. Funny Man!
best prof ever!
Greatest professor at UofA. Makes you actually want to be in class.
I've taken both CLAS 329 and CLAS 300 from Dr. Soren. He is without a doubt my favorite professor at U of A. His lectures are very interesting and I have learned a lot from them. He has an amazing background and he has a real passion for what he teaches. The class itself isn't too difficult. You have to take three quizzes, one midterm and one final.
Dr. Soren is the best teacher I have ever had. He inspired me to choose both my major and minor (Media Arts and Classics), and he genuinely cares about his students, even though his classes are large lectures. He makes you become as interested in the subjects as he is. And he brings his dog to class! what more can you ask for?
He is a very well informed teacher is very accomplished. He passionately cares about what he teaches and has traveled all over so he tells personalized stories about the places and objects he teaches about. He loves adding in random jokes all the time. It keeps the class entertained. We also watch a lot of movies that are actually entertaining.
the best teacher ever, not jut in the UofA, but in the WORLD. funny as hell. he's so entertaining. it's my favorite class. i'm not a classics major or anything but after having him i really want to be. he's the kind of guy, that when you're around him, you just know you're in the presence of greatness. he really is a genius... seriously. after havi
BEST TEACHER AT THE U OF A!! HANDS DOWN.
I hate to go against the grain, but I did not like his class. He rambles in his lectures and it's hard to understand what should be studied for the tests. Unless you have prior interest in classics, DO NOT take his classes!!!!!
Favorite prof by FAR,he has SUCH an interesting past (danced on CBS,on history channel, written about in NYtimes, and more).Im not interested in what he teaches so much, but i LOVE his class. He makes lecture so fun.If your borderline and have attended all but two classes hell bump you up. Only two test and quizes, easy if you go to class. You love it
Somehow he has formed an entire class around his obscure interests from the Ancient world and from the 1920s and 30s. He breaks up lengthy lectures with lame jokes, which he knows is pretty effective in keeping us awake. He's a cool person and has accomplished a lot in his life and he WILL tell you about it.You can't blame him though,he's awesome.
Best lecutres I have ever attended. This guy is great and he's done so much. I love his lectures and attend all of them. One of the best teachers i've ever had in my life. And the course is really easy too. Just a couple of easy quizzes and a mid term and final, no papers! i highly recommend this as a tier 2
I loved this class. 3 exams and one of them is complied of your highest quiz grades. You have to study really hard for his exams, but when the class ended (when I deserved a B) because I attended and participated in lectures he gave me an A. Seriously a wonderful teacher.
I love Dr. Soren! He makes class so fun and he's so silly, but he genuinely wants his students to succeed. Tests are a little hard, but if you get a good preceptor like I have all the information is laid out for you. Quizzes every two weeks, but you only have to take 3/7 and the rest are counted as extra credit. He does use sign in sheets.
took the 2classes I could, almost cried saying bye.NEVER had a teacher so inspiring&motivational.I truely feel like he cares.I seriously never really appreciated professors until he came along. If he switched schools I SWEAR I would transfer.if you listen 2 him,ull be forever changed, his life is AMAZING better than any movie-tvshows,NYtimesHISTchanne
What can I say that hasn't been said? He's the ideal teacher and an amazing person. He knows everyone and has done everything. He's very receptive to students and is an inspiration to everyone. I hope everyone appreciates how lucky we are to have a teacher like him. And I love those cheesy jokes, and his dog Angel is adorable.
Taken 2 of his classes so far. He is just amazing. I rarely went during CLAS329 & got a B. Only reason I didn't go was the A.M class time. Otherwise, I'd love to sit and enjoy his amazing lectures. Just take him if you're debating it for whatever reason. 40+ positive reviews speaks for itself. Have FUN!
This class isnt anything to rave about...ya the topic is interesting and soren is SUPER passionate about it...but its a lottttt of monotone talking and its hard to pay attention. he also doesnt use d2l, (he has a website) except there is no way to monitor your progress in the class. bottom line: its nothing to write home about
I agree with the last person. Nothing to write home about. Its easy A if you study. Everyone raves about Soren, and ya his dry sense of humor is funny for the first week. The material is really boring and way in which he teaches it doesn't make it any more interesting. Hes passionate about course subject, which is good. He needs D2L page for sure.
Loved his class. I'm a senior and I'm sad that I don't have time to take more of his classes. It isn't hard if you study for the quizzes and tests.
Super knowledgeable about ancient Rome, really laid back, funny, and overall a good professor. not sure how much longer he'll be teaching though he's old, but still kicking!
Take this class if you're interested in anything that matters. Both 300 and 329 were excellent. Dr Soren's lectures were all really interesting and he's really clear about the information he wants you to know for exams.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Soren is a wonderful teacher. His classes are so much fun. Not too much work but you still need to study. His dog is great, he brings her in every day. The material is facinating, I highly reccommend it.
He is an amazing professor! I would take the class again if I could. Easy A. Memorization is easy and that is all you need to do for the quizzes and exams. He is a really funny man who does his best to make the lectures fun to sit through. TERRIFIC!
Dr. Soren is very interesting and funny. BUT THIS CLASS BLEW...it is nothing but MEMORIZING EVERYTHING so he can just pick two for a quiz. The midterm and the final are basically his quizzes on steroids. I would recommend sitting in on the class because it is interesting... but i would never wish his quizzes and tests upon anyone.
It's hard going to a 75 min lecture at 9am in the morning but Dr. Soren makes the lecture interesting with his little jokes and videos. This class is straight-up memorization though it's a bit silly that you have to memorize at least 30 terms for each quiz but only get tested on 2 terms. p.s. he always brings his dog Lana to class :)
He is a very passionate professor and loves what he teaches. There is no need to buy the books, because notes are posted on d2l. For the tests and quizzes make sure to study. It was a pretty comprehensible class and I am glad I learned about forgotten people of the past.
This is such an amazing class! I learned so much and Dr. Soren makes everything so interesting because of his passion for his subject. This class is all about memorization so it is best to go to class and review the slideshows online as well. I truly appreciate what a great instructor Dr. Soren is and I'll recommend this class to everyone I know!
Dr. Soren is a great professor, he's funny, kind, brilliant, but his class itself was poorly set up. I love the material but to have 5 grade entries where the quizzes and the tests are worth the same even though one is more work than the other is just stupid. There's also a lot of reading and memorizing. It can be an easy A, if you're dedicated.
Lectures are either really boring or kinda cool, not a bad class except you have to memorize a bunch of terms
I recommend this class for anyone who needs the tier 2 humanities requirement. Soren is a really great teacher and the material is not too bad. His exams and quizzes were fair and if you studied the material, you will do well. The class is not mandatory which is nice. Not too much work, only 3 quizzes and a midterm and final.
He is an awesome teacher. He knows how to have fun and he knows when to be serious. He gets into his material and you feel like you are there living with what he's talking about. I'd definitely recommend
Soren is a funny, witty, overall really nice guy. Honestly I only attended classes on days we had quizzes and tests. But I learned a lot of fun/interesting/cool things about art history, pop culture, and cinema. You have to deal with studying a lot of terms, so be ready. But if you're good at memorization, it's all systems go
Soren is a really fun teacher who makes lectures fun and worth while. However his test were easy if you know how to memories 20 plus terms only to be tested on 2 of them. Review and know his review slides that's smart studying for this class :)
This class was so easy! you don't need to go either. I probably went once a month. He'll post all the terms online and you just need to memorize them. If you pull an all nighter for the midterm and final you'll get an A for sure. He's really funny/fun in his classes too, i LOVED him!
Dr. Soren is such a cute lil old man, he sings and brings his dog to class! He's so interesting to listen to, cracks a lot of jokes; definitely worth waking up to go to class at 9 am even though lectures are optional. Easy A as long as you pay attention.
Dr. Soren is the man, he is a fantastic lecturer and really knows his stuff, plus it can't get better when you get to watch Seinfeld in class.
He is a very nice professor. his quizes are nothing but memorizing 40+words their definitons, 5 facts, and dates along with them. i hate greek methology thats y im not enjoying this class. i am acutally going to drop this class. but if u like greek methology then u will enjoy it.
LOVE HIM. Dont be lazy go to class.
Great teacher! Cares about the material.
he loves what he teaches, which makes his classes awesome!
One of my favorite teachers EVER! very funny and nice guy! :)
You might as well call him Jesus.
Great teacher!
By FAR one of the most fun and entertaining professors I've had the pleasure of knowing. The comic skits may not always rip your sides, but they are wonderfully amusing and break the monotony that too many professors kill us with. Pretty fly for an old guy!
My favorite professor in my college career. He's interesting, helpful and hilarious. i have never enjoyed a class as much as I enjoy his. He truly loves what he teaches and I think he passes this love to his students.
Funny, Passionate about the Material
VERY good teacher! This is the second class I have taken of his and I love it!
Great Teacher!!!
Dr. Soren is cool. He does have a dry sence of humor, but atleast he tries. Quizes are a lot of memorizing, but thats the point of quizes. Just pay attention and its an easy "A"
Hilarious
very entertaining class.
Amazing!
Soren is very passionate in his teachings and makes them very interesting. Sense of humor keeps me awake in class!
LOVE HIM!!!
Great guy
He is an excellent teacher! This is my second class with him and I would take many more!!! If I was 80 years old, his wife would be scared...
I put the attendance as not mandatory, but he did post up 50 names at the end of each class that you would check, if your name is up just go flash your ID. after that you can miss class like crazy. I honestly really like this teacher, he has a good sense of humor and tries to keep the class awake.
Funniest class ever
my favorite professor ever! So much fun, and super entertaining.
He's always got some jokes in each lecture, I cant remember laughing at any of them, but the rest of the 500+ students were so he must be funny. Sincere guy who really loves what he does. Three thumbs up! GUFA
CLAS 300 is the 2nd class I've taken from Dr. Soren because I enjoyed CLAS 340b so much and my boyfriend recommended it. He's a great guy, really passionate about what he teaches; amazing life stories. The memorizing of 40 terms to only be tested on 2 can suck but I think most people that are complaining are just being lazy. Love Lana, RIP Angel
His jokes really help to keep the class light and makes it a lot easier to keep up with what he is talking about.
hes a really nice guy, who makes class more fun with small jokes. the exams arent too difficult since he has review sessions before each one
Dr. Soren is an amazing professor that has a passion for teaching, and what he is teaching about. He is also a very intelligent person, very funny, and his teacher aides are awesome too!!
This is my second semester taking Dr. Soren. He is a great teacher and very passionate about the subjects he teaches. Everyone should take one of his classes while at the U of A, if not for seeing his adorable dog everyday at least go for the jokes =)
Dr. Soren is an awesome teacher. His passion for this field makes the class much more fun and I cant go on without saying that I enjoy the jokes he has. Keep it up!! Teacher aides are great too! Def. would recommend.
He's got a hottness rating now! Lol :p
Dr.Soren loves what he teaches and students can tell when we watch him teach. Very knowledgeable, skits are fun and gives us a break once and awhile. I highly recommend, as you can tell from his hotness level!
Dr. Soren is the greatest teacher ever! you will NOT regret taking this class. He's super cute and funny. I LOVE HIM! <3
Amazing professor! Its so easy to learn in his class.
Amazing teacher and understands that students need a break and a few laughs. Would love to take more of his classes in the future.
Great Teacher!! He's funny, brings his dog to class and his quizzes aren't to bad if you study and come to lecture. I strongly recommend taking this class... easy a!
Dr. Soren is adorable! He's soooo sweet and he really obviously loves what he teaches. He tells corny jokes every day which is funny. Attendance is pretty much mandatory, but the tests aren't based off of lecture, they are based of the readings.
Such an easy class, if you study and go to class it wont be hard to get and A
The only reason I am in this class is because of Dr. Soren. I had him last semester and loved his teaching style and passion for the material.
Professor Soren is hysterical! Come to class, take notes, and study all the vocab words, and you will do fine. I can't wait to finish out the rest of the semester with him!
Easy to understand, but you need to pay attention. Very funny!! Also very passionate about what he teaches. I would like to take every class he teaches!
Dr. Soren is very passionate about Classics and conveys that well to the students. The classes are fun and interesting. He and the grad students put on great skits at just the right times! I would love to take any class with him!
Second class I've taken this semester and definitely plan to take more classes by him. One of my favorite teachers of all time. His history in acting and the entertainment business makes him easy to focus on in class. Absolutely suggest him - and go to class! It's worth getting up for!
The class is very interesting and Dr. Soren is great at teaching the material. The only thing that I regret was paying for the books. All the material comes from the lecture notes and ppts. But I may need the books for the midterm.. Good class, wonderful professor, and if you pay attention the quizzes are a breeze. Do the outlines for the exams = A
boring class, the guy tries too hard to be funny, I rarely pay attention in class. His jokes are dumb and the TAs are tied around his finger.
Nice old man, probably doesn't have much time left so he jokes a lot. The class is boring when he lectures, some of the movies are ok, still pretty boring. The class consist of 3 quizzes and 1 midterm and final. You must study. No way you will pass any of his test without studying. Ok class, wouldn't take it if I had known about it.
The professor genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed, but with that said, the lectures are pretty boring. The class contains 2 tests and 3 quizzes which consist of memorizing 40+ terms and only being tests on a few of them. The preceptors do all the work in this class, just memorize what they tell you to and you'll get an A.
He's awesome, he teaches you the material in fun way that is easy to learn. Yes, it's a lot of work but it's worth it.
Great prof who knows his stuff, jokes are funny and movies are great! Memorize all of the terms for the readings you will do great on quizzes and tests! If terms are not talked about in class dont worry about them! Exams are matching, pic id, term id (choose the ones you know from a list), and essay (promts given before). Sadly dates are a must.
One of the best professors I have ever studied under.
LOVE. HIM.
I would say he was the best professor I've had so far at UA. He is so passionate about what he does and teaches. His quizzes and exams are fair and if you study well enough you should have no problem getting an A. Nothing but love for Dr. Soren!
Never be his grad student. But his class is great.
I'm a biology major and just took this class for fun and it was one of the best classes I ever took. Dr. Soren actually takes the time to get to know his students while being passionate about his subject. He is always cracking silly and lame jokes about himself and the material, but it makes the class fun. The class is really easy too! MUST TAKE!
Soren is alright but the constant vaudeville routines gets really old and annoying. The TAs for this semester that did the reviews were incredibly unhelpful and annoying as well.
This is, without a doubt, one of the best classes I've taken at U of A. Soren is extremely passionate, funny and knowledgeable about his field. His classes are entertaining and you will walk away with a big appreciation for art and film. His tests are definitely not easy, but if you put time in studying you will do fine.
Obviously Dr. Soren is EXTREMELY passionate about this subject. But, the quizes are RIDICULOUS. memorizing 30+ items with the date, three facts, and a definition to be quized on two is absurd. Very difficult-wouldn't recommend.
If you like history, and dry jokes, this is the class for you. If you are science-minded, do not take this class. The class is nothing but memorizing what he considers as important sheeet in history.
One of the best classes that I've taken. Dr. Soren is so funny and entertaining, and he actually makes learning about art styles interesting. We even watched a couple movies! The quizzes are a lot of memorizing, but it's not that bad. I want to take another class with Dr. Soren because he is so knowledgable and passionate. Cool guy, great class.
Amazing and brilliant
If you have a chance to take one of Dr. Soren's classes do not hesitate. This is one of the most interesting classes I have after taken. I had really no interest in this class before I took it just for my major, but Dr. Soren makes everything so interesting and fun! One of the best professors I have had!
The material for this class is not at all hard to understand but the exams are RIDICULOUS. Memorizing 40+ definitions, dates, and 3 facts for only 2 to be picked is horrible. If you do bad on ur midterm or final you are screwed! Dr. Soren is a good man but if you are not a good test taker there is not chance for you in this class!! DONT DO IT!!!
He is a great teacher; he is a very cute old man. His quizzes and tests are very hard though. You definitely have to dedicate the night to studying for his quizzes and tests.
Dr. Soren is a wonderful person and lecturer, and I have enjoyed every class. However the only thing that goes into the grades are 3 quizzes and 2 tests, so unless you are great at memorizing concepts, don't take this class! If you are, I highly recommend this class. One of my favorites.
I have to give credit to the guy, teaching in for a class of 1500.His class is awful. This is a gen ed,yet he treats it as a 400 level class. Does random attendance.Terribly boring lectures, 2 tests&3 quizzes.Quizzes are so hard-know over 50 words, including definitions,date,3facts&style but only asks for TWO of them. was a complete waste of time!
This class is amazing! Easily the best class I have ever taken. Dr. Soren has a lot of experience in the field and is one of the best professors on campus. The only hard part is memorizing the info but all of it is fun & interesting. Dr. Soren makes the class entertaining, funny, & tries hard to engage his students. Take this class!
Dr. Soren is simply the best professor you could take at the U of A. His classes are fascinating, he tries very hard to keep the class engaged, shows great movies & clips, talks to students before class, etc. Tests and quizzes do involve dates but I never spent more than an hour studying. Go to class and you'll be golden. Take him, you'll love it!
If you love Roman art, this is the class for you. Dr. Soren knows this stuff--he should, he's been doing it for over 40 years! He's funny and entertaining and you will learn tons! Quizzes and tests do include dates, but what history class doesn't? If you go to class you shouldn't have too much of a problem. Definitely take a class with Soren!
The class was pretty interesting, but he does make you remember a lot of information for quizzes and then he only tests you on 2 terms. I just went to class for attendance and came in to class for quizzes and tests and I still managed to get an A.
Dr Soren is an awesome guy, but this class was the worst. Its based on pure memorization. You have to memorize hundreds of names, exact dates, and facts, but then he only will test you on a few (and he wont tell you which ones prior) and most of the stuff he talks about will never show up on quizzes or exams. Worst class I've taken!
Oh Dr. Soren... what a guy. Lectures are amazing, this guy truly has lived life to the fullest. Easy class, until it's quiz/exam time. Be prepared to study, HARD! They are exceptionally difficult, but thankfully it's the only work you actually have to do for the class. I'd definitely recommend this class, just dont expect an easy ride all the way.
Awesome class and awesome professor. The class is interesting if you like learning fun interesting facts about the history of cinema, tests and quizes are EASY. The preceptors for this class make a powerpoint with all the answers that you just have to memorize. I did almost none of the readings and got an A.
I found this class to be extremely EASY. If you think memorizing 20 to 30 facts for a couple quizzes and tests is hard, then maybe college isn?t for you. I only spent a couple nights the entire semester studying ? that was the amount of work I had to do. Soren is very funny and entertaining. Take this class and don?t buy the book, you won?t use it.
Dr. Soren makes going to class at 9am 3 days a week very bearable. He shows funny video clips during lectures and makes them interesting. I learned a lot from his class. He does random attendance so even if the class is large you still could get called any day. Quizzes are easy if you study! Same for exams. Just study dates well and you're good!
Extremely easy class, and Prof. Soren does a decent job trying to teach and entertain students. You have to sit through corny jokes (uses the same ones every semester) but the quizzes and tests are pretty easy, and attendance isn't mandatory. It's not great being in such a large class, but it fulfills the requirements.
he is my absolute favorite professor. Always funny and full of knowledge. Also, he's the most interesting professor i've ever had. definitely a fun class as long as you attend and study for tests/quizzes its an easy a.
Honestly, this class was pretty easy. There's a lot of information and although some of it might seem useless, just study, attend lectures, PAY ATTENTION, and memorize little details and you're good. Using textbook isn't really needed. If you attend lectures and pay attention, you'll be fine. Going to the reviews the preceptors hold is helpful too!
He's an ok guy but his TAs are mean/sarcastic/terrible. He is super paranoid about cheating and the entire class of 1500 people has to suffer for his delusions. With 1500 people you are totally lost in the crowd, but have mandatory attendance. The class is WAY too hard for a Gen-ed! He and his TAs do not know your name and do not care if you fail!
take this class if you are super genius something like that or hella good at memorizing over tons of terms for only tests and quiz. Or, I RECOMMEND YOU NOT TO TAKE THIS CLASS. this class will drive you nuts and ruin ur gpa....
Great class! makes class fun and keeps you entertained. Attendance not mandatory but attending will definitely help your grade. Awesome teacher, really loves what he does. Makes me wish I had majored in history
Best teacher at the UofA hands down. He is hilarious, genuine, and so passionate about what he teaches. If you have the opportunity you MUST take one of his classes!!
loved this class!
not too hard, this class give new meaning to the word "cramming". memorizing 50-90 terms in one night is basically the only way to get a good grade. He give you the terms early but the preceptors give you the def, date, and 3 facts the night before the quiz/test and you obviously want to use those. If you are not good at memorization dont take it!
Soren is the man! He's older but brings so much energy to the class and makes it a fun atmosphere. He has passion for his subject. The TAs are kinda lame, but there is one midterm, one final, and 3 quizes which makes up your grade for the class. 1-2 hours before each and you'll ace it. Definitely worth the trade off if you want an A and a fun dude.
He is a sweet guy with an amazing singing voice. Onae a midterm + a final + 3 quizzes. Each quiz required to know 40+ terms with facts, dates. But once you know it the quizzes are okay.
This class requires a LOT of memorization, Soren is such a nice guy who makes this class interesting and it's pretty easy to predict what will be on the quizzes. You won't need the textbooks if you go to the review sessions.
Dr. Soren is a nice teacher. He tries to make class interesting but the topic he's talking about isn't the best. There are no homework assignments, there's three quizzes, a midterm and final and that's it. This class is pure memorization so if you don't like studying that way then you will not like this class. I personally found it to be very easy
Dr. Soren is PASSIONATE about what he's teaching. Although the class may seem dull at times, pay attention for the little jokes/humor he sneaks in. He'll present new pieces of info to topics we've learned many times, which makes it more relevant. This class involves a lot of memorization, but there's no busy work. If you're self-motivated it's fun
Dr. Soren is the nicest professor I've ever had. He inserts a lot of little jokes into his lectures to make them more interesting. There is a ton of memorization involved but that's pretty much the extent of the quizzes and exams. Good class to take.
Class is super boring, but Soren is a cute old man and tries to joke around to keep you entertained. Attendance is mandatory but is only counted in about Involves lots of memorization about things that have nothing in common--- hitler, lesbian directors, doors. Not too hard of a class, but boring and lots of work for minimal points.
Dr. Soren is a great professor, he makes sure to take time to help you connect with experts in your field of study in anthropology. He also brings his dog to class which is cute. The class is mostly an easy "A" and the textbook isn't really required. There are 3 short answer quizzes, a midterm and a final and no homework, its definitely manageable.
Ended up with a high A but I wouldn't take another class like this. I have no interest in classics which might be the reason why I didn't enjoy it. Or it could be the mind-numbing memorization. Class requires no thought, only memorizing terms/dates/facts. It's really not hard, just annoyingly intensive on memorization.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Soren is passionate about what he's teaching, committed to helping all of his students succeed, and overall, a great man. He's funny, and organized an clear when lecturing. I highly recommend taking any course he teaches.
Amazing professor, knows his stuff.
Very funny and cute professor, but soooo much memorization involved. We have to know 60 terms and from those terms we have to know the dates and 3 facts but the thing is he only test us on 2. take this class if your good at memorization!
Dr. Soren amazing - one of the best professors I've had. He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about the material. Corny jokes, but he always made me smile. Yes, there is A LOT of memorizing (60 terms + date, definition & 3 facts) but he always picked ones he focused on in class. I was never interested in art, but this was my favorite class.
Soren is the man. The lectures are good enough to where if you wanna pay attention its educational but if you don't its pure memorization for the whole class. Its a sure A if you pay attention and can memorize but if you don't pay attention, go to the reviews, and memorize, its still an A.
Dr. Soren is a sweet old man who knows his stuff but the amount of memorization required for the class is beyond ridiculous. There are 3 quizzes for the semester, and for each you must know 50+ terms including 1 def, birth & death date, & 3 facts! Then he only tests you on 2 of the 50+ terms! Its ridiculous! And the midterm isn't any easier.
THIS CLASS IS HARD. The professor is very nice and interesting, but his quizzes/tests require a ridiculous amount of memorization. Attendance is mandatory too.
329 is not so bad itself, but the quizzes and tests are ridiculous. Always have to go because you are never sure if your name will be up, and there is so much more to know than what he covers in class. The memorization is awful, and it really isn't that interesting. If your looking for an A, only take this class if you can memorize 50+ terms easy.
This class is easy in the sense that I don't do anything for it (attend or do the readings) until a few days before the exams and quizzes. They are brutal & there is a ton of memorization & for those few days this class consumes a lot of my time. But I figure it is worth it. Don't bother with the books if you plan to go to the review sessions.
Dr. Soren is probably one of the most interesting and compassionate people I have ever met. A quick Internet search will reveal his credentials, which range from archeological excavations to producing films like MADAGASCAR. Beyond this, Dr. Soren is passionate about his subject and imparts his own experiences into the lectures. Take this class!
Not a REALLY difficult class, but does require effort. I didnt have an interest for art history nor films but needed this credit and it ended up being one of my favorite classes. Dr. Soren is intelligent and passionate and this class was very interesting.
Dr. Soren is one of the best professors I have ever had at the U of A. I took his CLAS 329 class and thought it was awesome but ANTH 340b was pretty cool too. I think this class was a bit harder than CLAS 329 because you have to memorize most of the emperors and buildings of ancient Rome. Just attend every class and take good notes and you're set!
great class and professor! does random attendance. quizzes are tough because of the amount of vocab words.
He's great. If you take one semester for a requirement, take it with him again. 300 and 329 are really similar easy A. This man has had a really interesting life and loves sharing it with his students :)
loved this proff. he's such a cute old man and the life he has lived is amazing. His lectures can be boring at times, but some things he teaches are REALLY interesting. I'd recommend anyone take his class
I have taken CLAS 300, 340B, and 329. Easy classes. I never went to lecture, got an A. He says he takes attendance and counts it against you but he doesnt in the end. I have never had any points taken off my final for lack of attendance. In each of the courses, there are 3 quizzes and 2 exams. If you're good at memorization, you're golden.
The most profound professor one could ever meet.
The best teacher I've ever had in my entire life!! I've taken 340b and 329 with him and it's honestly a very easy A if you go to class, pay attention/good at memorization (If you don't go to class, make sure you read the books). I would recommend taking any of his classes.
Soren is my favorite professor I've had so far, great sense of humor and obvious passion about the subject. This class is straight memorization, that's it. If you are not good at memorization, do not take this class. That's the only reason he has low ratings is for the kids who can't memorize. 3 quizzes 2 exams, easy A/B if you can memorize/cram.
GREAT TEACHER! if you put in the effort you will learn SOOO much! you just need to go to class. warning: he blocks wifi in the classroom so if you need to troll fb while youre in class, you'll probly hate it
The easiest class one could take at the UofA. I did not attend one full lecture and received an A on every quiz and a 98% on the midterm. Have yet to take the final but I am not worried at all. Take this if you want an easy A.
This class isn't "a joke" but it is easy if you go to class and pay attention. Dr Soren tells you EXACTLY what you need to know for tests and quizzes. He takes some attendance at every class and going to class guarantees you don't have to study much before exams. He's a very smart, funny and nice guy and going to class is a joy.
I did not know much of anything taught in this class prior to taking it but I would say this class is relatively easy. You have to work a bit but he tells you exactly what is on the quizzes and exams and you really don't need the books. Curves your grade a little at the end if it is near the next letter grade. I would say take it!
Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good. Quizzes are based off the two most obvious terms and the reviews go over exactly what's on the midterm/final. Guy's always crackin' wise making class all sorts of fun.
Class is extremely difficult with memorization. There are a huge amount of terms and you need a definition, date, and 3 facts for each. The TAs decide if your facts are 'good' enough, and you can get 0 points on something you understood 100%. I would not recommend to anyone because grades are unfair and weighted too highly on small quizzes.
Do not take this class. The class is solely based on three quizzes, a midterm, and a final. The quizzes are a joke, they ask you to give a good definition, date, and three facts for 50+ terms. The TA's grade your quizzes, and midterm so strictly. This class is difficult, and if you put in the time you still won't succeed. Stay away from this
This class is primarily based off memorization. You do not have to go to class because all you need to know is terms for the test and quizzes. If you're good at memorizing then this class is cake. The help sessions prior to a test go over everything you need to know.
Not a chill gen ed. Took this course hoping for an easy A, which it isn't. His quizzes are 11 percent each and he chooses his 2 terms from a list of 40. u must known the birth and the death date, full definition and 3 facts in sentence form. NOT AN EASY GEN ED!
He is such a cool guy. He tries to make the class interesting and tells you exactly what is on the quizzes and tests, usually the most emphasized things in class. Going to class helps a lot and so do the review sessions. If you're good at memorization it isn't too hard but be prepared to put some effort in and make flashcards
He is a great guy and his lectures CAN be entertaining, if you are a good cram studier/memorizer you will do well in this class, attendance is "mandatory" but even if you don't go to class you can easily get a A or B. The tests seem like a ton of material as do the quizzes but 3 or so hours of cramming will get the job done.
Although Dr. Soren is a "cute" old man, he expects way too much from his students taking this course as a gen. ed. The memorization skills required are extreme. I would not recommend this course unless you are already a film history fanatic.
His classes are all strictly memorization. Your only grades are 3 quizzes, the midterm, and the final. You have to remember dates for everything, 3 facts for everything, etc. For a Gen Ed course, the memorization requirement is extremely ridiculous. The professor is very likeable, but doesn't have realistic expectations by any means.
Super easy class! Class attendance helps boost your grade at the end. 3 quizzes, a midterm, and a final which is stressful but he only counts 3/4 quizzes, so you get a freebie. Just go to the reviews by the TAs, they give you the terms for the quizzes and you only need to know the popular ones. I would highly recommend!
He gets behind on material but still quizzes you on things that you haven't talked about in class because "it's part of the readings". Quizzes aren't difficult, but midterm and final can be tricky. It's all memorization, so be prepared to cram all the info for a short amount of time.
I loved Dr. Soren as a person. He is such a cute, nice guy and truly loves teaching. The class is boring but he tries his best to make it interesting. There is an INCREDIBLE amount of memorizing. Quizzes are 40-50 terms, you have to know a range of dates, a def, and 3 facts for every word, and only 2 terms are on the quiz. Wouldn't recommend.
Thought this would be harder. Definitely too many words to memorize. But it peaked my interest in ancient Roman and Greek history. Worth taking the class with Soren. Go to all the reviews
Another user said to go to all the review sessions, but they are ran by the preceptors that are also taking the class with you. They always have wrong information on the slides and the TA's, who have already taken the class, just sit there and correct them. The whole class is unorganized and a pain to be in. AVOID.
If you are looking for a gen-ed that doesn't require a lot of work or studying, this is not the class for you. The material is beyond dry. The tests and quizzes are easy if you don't mind studying 75+ words & facts per quiz. He takes random attendance of 20 people in the course, per class. The best part of the course was that he brought his dog in.
Best class i have ever taken in my life! Explains things clearly and with his energetic personality, he makes the class interesting!
Do not take this course as a Gen Ed. Only suffer through this class if it is required for your major. The Quizzes are worth 1/3 of your final grade, and are only 2 vocabulary terms out of a list of roughly 50 that is given.
Do NOT take this class if you have a choice. The memorization of 50+ terms+ birth and death year of every artist- not worth it!!!!!!!!
I can't say enough good things about Dr. Soren and I loved this class! He is extremely interested in his work and presents the material well. There are four quizzes and two exams. Pay attention in class and you'll ace them all. For attendance he puts random names up on the board each class to check. Take this class!
I always love Dr. Soren's lectures and his knowledge and personal experience on the subject matter is simply unmatched. Attendance is critical for understanding the subject matter and the review sessions hosted by the T/A's will help alot.
Memorizing 100+ terms at once was so freaking hard. Barely made it out with a good grade in this class. I went to him for help and he wasn't very helpful at all. Would not recommend if you want an easy "A" gen ed.
Professor Soren is passionate and an AMAZING teacher.. I love the guy!!!! His study guides are great and makes sure you retain the knowledge and have fun.. He is not out to stump you on exams and provides great study material. He is a funny dude!!
Do NOT take this class if you are looking for an easy A or are not interested in classical history. Soren seems like a great guy, and he's funny. However, I am a 4.0 student, but I will not be anymore after this class. I'm a pre-physio major and I struggle succeeding in this course. Tests are hard and there is a lot of reading. Not easy to get by.
This was somehow one of the easiest and most informative classes that I've ever taken. Yes, there are a lot of terms to memorize, but the terms that end up on the quizzes and tests are things that are emphasized in lecture or they are things that you probably know about already. Don't buy the textbooks for this class! You can find everything online
You don't need the textbooks, the Best class ever, he is funny. Just study the review slides provided by the preceptors and you will be fine. I had no interest in history but he made this class interesting. Didn't study for the midterm and did not do well, studied for the final and got a 90. Basically all you have to do is study, good luck :)
Dr. Soren was funny! Don't need the book at all, BUT you do need to study! Average of 50 terms for quizzes of which he only chooses 2. Listen to lectures, and you'll pretty much know which two terms he'll pick from!
Dr. Soren is an amazing teacher! There are 4 quizzes (drops 1 lowest grade), the midterm, and Final. If you can memorize 150+ vocabs you should do fine, I memorized all the terms the night before and still managed to get A's and B's. (pretty obvious which terms to study) & you don't need the book! I would take a another class with him again! :)
Yes he tells you a billion terms to memorize but honestly all you need to memorize are the ones he took the time to discuss in his lectures. I got an A in the class and I did not invest a lot of time in the class. Attend lectures. would just study sincerely a day or two before a test or quiz & I would be fine. Very passionate about what he teaches.
Professor Soren is a real sweet guy and is extremely smart. However I didn't find the context of his lectures interesting which made it difficult to pay attention. There aren't any assignments just a few test and quizzes but you HAVE to pay attention in class to pass them.
Dr. Soren has been my favorite professor. His lectures are interesting and he is so passionate. There are only a couple quizzes and a midterm which are easy as long as you take good notes, and study for a couple hours.
Dr. Soren is one of the most passionate and inspirational teachers I've had, and probably one of the most interesting. He really knows his stuff, but there's a lot of info in his lectures. There's only 4 quizzes & 2 tests. For the tests, just study what he reviews in class (don't rely on the TA's review). I never bought the books and I did fine.
I absolutely loved this class and Dr. Soren. He's smart, passionate, and adorable. But, do not take it if you are not interested in art history! Go to class every day and take good notes. If you do this, you absolutely do not need $100+ worth of "required" textbooks. The in-class review is essential for the tests. Draft out your essay beforehand.
Dr. Soren is an amazing professor. He is so passionate about the material he teaches. While, yes, their is a lot of material to learn for the two tests he basically tells you exactly what you need to know during his in-class reviews. The four quizzes are a little more complicated. You will have to memorize lots of dates; he is a stickler for dates.
He is an easy going teacher and cares about students. You will laugh a lot in his class and as long as you do a little work the class is the easiest A you'll ever get.
There are about 4 exams including the midterm and final exam. Along with each exam get ready to write a short essay in response to one of the prompts provided and make sure to do all the readings and make sure to remember several paintings from lecture and the book because they will most likely be on the exams.
Okay, I'll be honest, the class is hard to stay up in. I fell asleep every day once the lecture started, but Prof. Soren is very kind & funny. As noted that I slept half the time, I still a 80%+ on all quizzes & tests. A little effort goes a long way. Just know & understand the terms. I don't know how you can do bad in this class.
I found out that his TA's are firmer graders because they like to be sticklers of essays. Overall, class was not difficult, many students slept. If you are not keen on roman/greek tragedy or art deco it may take a bit to get it. He tries to make class fun with cheesy jokes but so easy!
Dr Soren is the best! His jokes are hilarious, his lectures are great, and he can sing! There is a lot of info in the class but the preceptors and TA's are really helpful. There are only a handful of quizzes and a midterm and final. You need to memorize dates but other than that his tests are pretty easy. Take his class if you can!!!
Dr. Soren is a really great guy and is super passionate but in all honesty his class is way to hard for a gened. You have to memorize approximately 25 dates for simple quizzes and his lectures are hard to listen to because the material is dry. I would 100% take a different Gen Ed. Too much work required for not that important of a class.
Straight forward class. If you attend and do the readings you probably won't have trouble. Dr. Soren interrupts his own lectures with little skits or jokes that help keep things entertaining, and you get to watch a few movies as well.
Dr. Soren is the most knowledgeable Professor on his subject matter that I have had at the U of A. He has appeared on the Discovery and History channels and is one of the top Archaeologists in the world. You will learn a ton in his classes and he makes it fun and I would take every class that he teaches if I could.
Soren is the sweetest guy and he tries really hard to make the class fun by cracking jokes and getting his TAs involved but its all so endearing you won't mind the cheesiness. He gives "pop' quizzes but you'll always know when they are and it's not hard to guess what they'll be on. Study the night before each test, that's all you need to pass.
He gives excellent feedback. There is not a question he would not answer and there is nothing he would not do to help you succeed in any of his classes. All you have to do is ask for help. I was a science major but I took him for 3 classes to cover my upper division elective and I would do it all over again. He is the best professor I ever had.
Dr. Soren is a cute old man who is very passionate about the material, and he brings his dog to every class!! Quizzes are kind of ridiculous because theres 100 terms to study from for only a two question quiz. Otherwise, the midterm and final are easy A's as long as you study. Don't really have to go to class but randomly takes attendance.
Dr. Soren is the absolute best professor at the UofA. His jokes, although incredibly cheesy, are great. He really is a wonderful professor that truly cares about his students and always makes time for them even while he is running to his millionth meeting with his dog. You won't regret taking his classes.
Dr. Soren is amazing. Lana the Dog usually attends class with you. Show up or you won't pass, read the textbook or you won't pass. There is five quizzes and one of them gets dropped, also a midterm and a final. Great class, just put some effort into it and you will pass
Oh what a fun class. You probably won't learn too much from this class really but he keeps it fun and interesting. Only 4 quizzes and one gets dropped. A midterm and a final and a few readings. Do the readings and look at the slides before the test and it's a cakewalk. Attendance is mandatory though.
Professor Soren is so funny and keeps class entertaining. The quizzes are easy as long as you take some time to study the vocab. This class doesn't require a lot of work, you just need to pay attention during lectures. Will definitely be taking more of his classes.
Love Dr. Siren. Best Professor on the campus. Hands down. Entertaining and engaging lectures! Makes learning easy!
He is a great guy! Funny & just a cute man who is super passionate and famous. However, his class is not the best gen ed. You're only graded on two tests and three quizzes. For quizzes, you learn 40 terms to be tested on 2. If you aren't passionate about art cinema history, don't take! Too stressful & not meant for people exploring the topic.
Dr Soren is one of the best professors at UA, hands down. He is an engaging lecturer and makes the material easy to understand. Grade based on a midterm, a final, and three quizzes. Show up every day and get extra credit at the end of the semester. During the lecture on dance, he demonstrated the steps. At 70 years old. Surprisingly good dancer!
Dr. Soren is a great lecturer and keeps the class interested by telling jokes and doing comical things. The quizzes and tests are not bad but memorization of dates is key. No homework, just a final essay. Some of the material gets dull at times but overall its a great and easy course to take.
Dr. Soren is one of those professors who truly does give his students the tools they need to succeed in his course. He knows lectures can be dense, so he always has his TA's break it up with cheesy humor or magic tricks. He's also very flexible with final grades, and even though I had an 87%, he rounded it up to an A because he saw improvement!
Dr. Soren is a gem. He is the sweetest person and definitely one of my favorite professors. He makes the class interesting by watching films and his exams are easy as long as you attend his lectures and pay attention. His TA's do skits that are so horrendous that they are hilarious and it just makes the class that much better.
The lecture design was made by a third grader. There was no structure to his lesson plans. His TAs never graded consistently. He gives you a list for 40 terms to memorize for a quiz and tests you on 2! He spent a month on the Mona Lisa and DID NOT include her on the exam or quizzes. His TAs did not feel the need to use a microphone in a 900.
The worst class I have had. For passing a quiz, you must memorize 5 facts(including date) about each person he mentions in class. The quizzes are only short answers (and close note). For the midterm, you got an essay as a part of your midterm. You cannot see your note during writing this essay. The topics are something he briefly mentions in class.
possibly the worst class I have ever taken. the only things in the grade are quizzes, a midterm, and a final. the quizzes are open ended questions that you must provide 3 facts and dates about the question he asks which are usually over 3 very poorly written chapters in a textbook written by him. doesnt even define what a good fact is AT ALL
Dr. Soren is amazing! He is one of the best professors I have ever had. Everything he talks about is very personal because he has lived through it all. He is very personable and very easy to talk to if you have questions. The class, on the other hand, is a little indifferent. You are graded on a total of 5 things and they are either tests or papers
Dr. Soren is hilarious and makes lectures interesting. For everyone saying that the quizzes were hard, probably did not review the powerpoints or skipped class. He tells countless cheesy jokes, but he really knows what he's talking about.
Soren is one of the few teachers now a days that really cares about the topic he is teaching. He is funny and generally caring for his students. The quizzes are easy, because the preceptors write up review powerpoints and the tests are cake, cause Soren goes over everything the class before the tests. Awesome teacher!!!
Anyone who rated Dr. Soren badly on this site probably received a poor final grade. All of the quizzes are self explanatory and easy if you pay attention in class. Dr. Soren was one of the best teachers I've had in college and I look forward to taking another class with him!
he was amazing. really interesting classes, easy exams, and cool lectures. he also curves if you ask him to.
Dr. Soren is an AMAZING teacher. Not only is he hilarious, but very thoughtful and inspirational when it comes to teaching. If you are taking this course, I recommend you come to every lecture, if you do, there will be no problem with getting an A in this course!
Not to exaggerate or anything but I would die for Dr. Soren and his sweet service dog Lana. This class is honestly super interesting if you're into art / art history, and Dr. Soren is the best professor I've ever had. He has lots of experience and is super passionate about the subject. I highly recommend any of his courses!!!
Dr. Soren and his service dog, Lana, are so precious and you don't know how sad I am to not see them every week! He is super nice and passionate about this course and every other course he teaches. Super easy class and very interesting! I totally recommend any class of Dr. Soren.
I took Professor Soren online and the online format was overwhelming at times since he would always upload two hour long lectures a week but it's easily adaptable. His lectures were really informative and had great humor.
I took this class online, and Professor Soren is just the sweetest man ever. He really cares about his students. midterm exam, quizzes, and the final are all worth 20% each, and then discussions and a final paper (of I believe 750 words) make up the rest. There is lots of opportunity for makeup, so it is very hard not to get an A! Great class!!
Dr. Soren and his service dog Lana would highlight my week. Super passionate and caring professor. Lectures were long but interesting, I'm not all that into art history but they kept my attention. Participation matters, there are pop quizzes and discussions to do but nothing too difficult if you do the readings. 10/10 would recommend!
Easiest class ever! I am a Classics major and this is the literally best thing that happened to me since the pandemic. Easy lecture videos, light readings, abundant extra credit opportunities. You should not worry about the level of difficulty of course materials as long as you have some high school knowledge of the Greco-Roman world.
Alright, someone recommended this to me as an easy A gen ed that requires little work. HOWEVER, that is not the case. There are two 250 word responses that you have to do every week. Each lecture he uploads is about an hour-long and there are two every week you have to watch. The midterm/Final format is awful. Essay instructions horribly unclear.
Dr. Soren obviously knows what he's talking about but doesn't take himself seriously at all. Get ready for laugh tracks in lectures and Dad joke breaks. A lot of lectures and they're all pretty long, but if you pay attention you'll get a good grade. I'd definitely take another class from Dr Soren & Lana (his service dog).
Professor Soren is nothing short of an absolute sweetheart who goes out of his way to personalize his fun lectures and provide extensive help on all assignments. I loved attending his class and seeing his personality and true love for the cinema shine through. This entire class is an easy A as long as you expand on your own interests and show up!
awesome professor! the lectures are usually around an hour long and require a 250 word discussion post. only about 2 hours a week of work!theres a semi difficult midterm and final but you can look through his slides. also a term paper at the end of the semester but its easy. definitely take him if you need a gen ed!!! super easy A
Dr. Soren is really caring and helpful. You can expect one or two dad jokes per lecture. The whole class is overall very interesting it is the best GenEd I took so far, and the easiest A I ever got.
Dr. Soren is a great guy, and this class is an easy A, but to me it was very boring. Would still very much recommend if wanting to fulfill a gen-ed tho.
Very simple and kind professor. The course was very easy, and would recommend as an easy general ed.
I really enjoyed this course. Every week there's one interesting lecture video with an easy "pop quiz" of 1 question at the end and a discussion for the topic. I know some people didn't buy the textbook but I found it helpful to cite and find more sources for essays and discussions since sourcing and citing is required. Final paper of 1000 words
easy gen ed class!!! take it !!! videos w question at end, easy to answer, mid term and final with final paper that is nothing crazy (not a 8 page paper)
Dr Soren is a gem. He always bring his dog Lana to lectures or cracks a dad joke to keep students interested. This class is such an easy A. Grades are based off lecture attendance, one discussion post a week, 2 exams and a paper. The syllabus says block of 2 & 1/2 hours a week, which is practically nothing. Would highly recommend!
Dr. Soren is the sweetest man and his ARH gen ed is great--easy A, great layout, and super straightforward grading criteria. Can't really add much that others haven't already said, but I definitely recommend this class.
I found Dr. Soren's lectures to be interesting and engaging, plus he's hilarious. Workload usually consists of a lecture and a discussion post, with 2 exams and a final essay throughout the semester. Easy and engaging class if you stay on top of the (rather low) workload.
here's what you need to know: every week there is a lecture or two + a 250-word discussion. your midterm and final exam will have you identify pictures, paintings, and words where you'll have to provide a date, description, and 3 facts about the topic. there is a semester paper: write 1000 words about a book/movie/video over one of the class topics
Really enjoyed his class, as long as you actually like the subject matter the lectures and discussions are super easy, tests are straightforward and he tells you what to study.
Very easy but interesting class. Weekly discussions and an end-of-term paper. Dr. Soren made the lectures very enjoyable and easy to process. Wish there was a bit more interaction (it was online asynchronous) just because he seems like such a cool person! Would 100% recommend/take again.
This class was overall easy! Dr. Soren is entertaining and funny! He is extremely knowledgable and even shares some of his own experiences with the times or individuals he is lecturing about! I would recommend!
Truly a great professor who cares deeply about what he is teaching. Pay attention, take notes and watch lectures and you will pass this class without a doubt.
Professor Soren taught such a solid class! I wish I could take more from him! He had clearly defined expectations and coursework. His lectures are funny and interesting! He's an all-around great guy and professor!
Soren is a good and kind professor, his TAs seem to be teacher's pets, they really like to pinpoint every single little detail in my discussion posts and essays. I could tell when Dr. Soren would grade my assignments versus the TAs, Dr. Soren would leave nice comments and would correct me there was a mistake and the TAs were just very mean.
Caring & corny, clearly loves what he teaches. One of the few courses I always looked forward to. Lectures vids are long but straightforward; take good notes and you'll get good test grades. Weekly HW posts are short and easy if you view the lectures/read the textbook. The one essay assignment was on the easier end of essays I've had to write.
Dr. Soren is the best of the best. The course is lecture heavy but I enjoyed every minute of it. He has a way of talking about history that's fun, engaging, and easy to remember. History gets all confused in my mind sometimes but I can recall the events of Dr. Soren's lectures with perfect clarity. 10/10 recommend any of his classes.
Lectures were a little boring but make sure you pay attention because there is a 250 word discussion post on them each week, you need to specifically provide examples from the lecture in each one. Final paper is 2,000 words, not 1,000 like the other reviews & would recommend starting it early. The midterm and final exam are super easy.
Overall an easy class and the professor was really nice and answered emails quick. The only weekly assignment is a 250 word reflection. There are 2 tests over the course, which are easy because he provides a study guide and a paper of 2,000 words at the end of the semester, just start it early and you'll be good.
Lecture videos don't always contain enough content to write the weekly papers, the textbook is also just a reiteration of his lectures. He is reluctant to give full credit on anything (even on papers worth only 2 points) just expect nit-picky criticism even if you think you've responded to all the prompts and discussed them to the nth degree.
Dr. Soren is a very caring, smart teacher! This class was fun to take! There's a 500 word CTQ per week, three 1hr. lectures per week, 2 exams (Midterm and Final-both are easy), and a 2,000 word essay on a topic that you have learned about in class. You get to see video clips of movies, dances, and paintings, like the Mona Lisa with a mustache!
Probably one of the best courses to take, its super simple to take. As long as you put in effort you will receive an A. The lectures are awesome especially since he bring his dog out for some of them. I even went out of my way and time to write this, that's how awesome this class and teacher was.
so easy but defiantly learned. best class ever
Dr. Soren is extremely passionate about teaching and it shows. He has a depth of knowledge and wants to share it with his students. He is also very caring, understanding, and I cannot recommend a professor more. If you have the chance to take literally any class with him, do it!
This class was a blast! Professor Soren made the lectures engaging, and the manageable workload allowed me to focus on learning. Plus, unstuckstudy ai was a game-changer for exam prep.
I found his lectures just ok, it's video clip heavy, where out of the hour + lecture he is actually only lecturing for 15-20 minute's. Which I found hard to stay engaged. As far as his grading goes, if he even is grading? I found it really inconsistent. One week I would get an A then next a C even though they were written and composed the same.
He critiques everything in your writings and will nitpick everything you do. For a gen-ed class, he sure does care too much. It's ridiculous. If you don't specify what you are talking about in one sentence, he will doc points off. Actually insane. Do not take his class. The course isnt difficult he is difficult.
I was genuinely engaged in his class and really enjoyed the time and effort he put in to make the class more fun.
Definitely recommend this gen ed class. Lectures are online and you have to turn in a discussion post every week. There's a midterm, essay, and a final but they are all doable. Dr. Soren is really caring and he wants his students to succeed. 100 percent recommend! As long as you do the work, it's an easy A.
Guys take this class its the best. Prof is so sweet and has super easy work. I got ahead of the work like 4 weeks in advance, you just have to watch videos and do some very short quizzes. ONE essay, but easy for the entire semester. Trust me take this class
Lots of busywork. Weekly 500-word essays involve parroting the textbook/lectures. Most of the essays have little to do with the films that you are required to watch (none require actual analysis). However, lectures are funny and earnest. Dr. Soren is incredibly knowledgeable about the topics. $120 required textbook. 2,000+ word final paper.
Material isn't difficult, but his grading is extremely inconsistent and his lectures are boring. I got every letter grade on writing. Lectures don't always align with the reading. It's his own textbook which is a regurgitation of the lecture. Weekly assignments are 500+ words and there's one 2,000+ word paper at the end. One midterm and one final.
Great online lectures that were enjoyable to watch. All of the material was easy to understand.
Dr. Soren is an amazing professor—knowledgeable, passionate, and genuinely caring. He responds quickly to emails and makes the class fun and engaging. His love for teaching shows in every lecture. CLAS 329 was a great experience, and I loved seeing Lana, his sweet dog. And he has a great voice. Highly recommend this class!
Dr. Soren is one of the most interesting people I've ever had the pleasure of hearing from. Could not recommend this class more it was an amazing time.
