Very interesting but clear, varies techniques, keeps class moving, large knowledge base
he's OK. does not take attendance... you don't need the book. just follow directions on all assignments. if you're looking to learn a lot, and you've taken 306 and intro, you'll just be reinforcing everything you've already been taught.
I took him for personality. SOOOO boring!!
Although I think David is a very interesting and great person, this class is really set up for students who are not psych majors. The material is really dry and is more like a review of Psy306, going over different theorists that all of the psych students have learned about many times before. I would suggest waiting for Geri Olsen to teach it.
David has been one of my favorite professors at SSU. He is very fair and always willing to help students. He does not take attendence (which is great) and I still went to every class. I actually looked forward to his classes. He is clear and manages to have a great sense of humor!!!
i agree with most comments already, hes a nice guy but has a boring teaching style, he just goes through a list of about 10 theorists and stands in front of the class and talks about the theory- boring! two 5page papers(not hard just follow directions of exactly what HE wants) and final is coming up with your own theory of personality
You basically never have to go to class except for test days and the days you turn in papers that are for credit/no credit. He reads stright from the book. The only thing he does in class is say which paragraphs you need to know for sure. Very easy class. Boring and pointless discussions with a partner in the middle of classes.
if you are a decent note taker, you don't need to buy the $100 book. he reads everything from the book, so take notes on what he says and that's basically what is on the test. he also has a VERY easy grading scale. just pay attention during class and you'll do very well. he's a very interesting professor.
I was very disappointed in David teaching this class. I thought it would be easy since an 85% is an A but his tests are impossible and the only thing he grades are your tests. I found his lectures to be boring, he is very mono tone which makes you want to fall alseep. He is somewhat helpful outside of class. I do not recommend this class...
exudes warmth, extremely understanding, strong desire for his students to exceed and to help them do so.
He's a nice guy, but pretty boring you're gotta study pretty hard to do good on the multiple choice tests we had to do individual presentations on the same topic so it was so repeative to listen to them and he graded hard on them though we all said the same thing it was dumb
At first I thought he was crazy, because he is all into dreams, intuition, and spirit stuff. He has really grown on me. He has an easy grading scale and curves every test. There are no essays. He tells us the exact pg's to read for the test. He is a nice guy and I also have him for the careers dialogue class. too much group discussion in class thou
He grades really easy, but you HAVE to study for the test. Allot of information but he doesn't make you read the enitre chapter. Wants students to do good, the subject matter is just a bit dry.
You basically take notes the whole class, and then he gives you page numbers to read for the test. Tests are pretty easy as long as you actually read the material, and I wouldnt suggest waiting until the night before to do so. I found it to be an interesting class, and he's a nice guy with a pretty easy grading system.
His class is pretty easy. Half of the class is lecture, and another half of the class is discussion in small groups, which are totally helpful and fun. During the discussion, we gave two presentations about ourselves and someone else's lives. Exams are from his lecture and textbook, which are not difficult.
Sowerby is a great instructor. Very helpful and enthusiastic. I recommend taking his courses!
Take David's class it is so easy. No homework, your grade depends on 4 tests and 2 papers. You will learn something everyday in his class.
He is wonderful. He is so friendly and helpful. The subject is interesting and he tries hard to keep people entertained. The papers are graded CR/NC and the tests are fairly simple if you do the reading, which he gives you page numbers for. I would definitely recommend taking his classes. I have twice!
i recommend this class!
Take this class! super easy and interesting!
Awesome teacher. I always loved going to his class. Learned a lot and not a lot of work.
Nice, easy A. Tests are straight from the book, study a little. Two papers, with two presentations infront of a small group. Lectures by him maximum of 30 min and then small groups who mostly let you out early.
He was a great teacher who really wants his students to do well. Go to class (participating 40% of grade)and take the notes and read the pages he tells you to and you will get at least a B if not an A!
David is very clear, warm, intelligent, extremely supportive, always willing to help you out. Class is Powerpoint lecture and you give presentations based on your interests and personal development. Learn a lot about transpersonal psychology, very interesting topics in consciousness studies. Prepare well for tests, which are short, multiple choice.
Easy class, great teacher. Does powerpoint and mulitple choice tests. Relaxed atmosphere and test grades are curved. a little effort goes a long way, easy class.
This class is amazing. Not only is it one of the college classes you can miss on occasion without feeling guilty or behind, it is actualyl very insightful. Test are multiple choice. Everyone is divided into groups of about 10 with TA's. Your only in the class room for about a half hour. Not much effort needed. Easy grade!
awesome awesome awesome... lectures are clear, tests are on eactly what was covered in lecture.. dont need to do the extra reading ..
EASY. 2 papers & 2 presentations graded credit/no credit, so basically you just have to do them, and that's 40% of your grade. i thought his tests were pretty much common sense & what he lectured on, & i never read the book, but i know other people who thought they were a bit harder... either way all the way to 80% is an A, so you'll get an A or B.
He is a great teacher. Interesting. Everything on the tests are in his lectures. His tests are fairly easy. Write two papers and share with you TA group. Everyday he lectures for about 30 minutes and then you break off into small groups with an assigned ta... good class i'd reccommend it!
i LOVE this professor he goes over the material clearly, for only 30 mins then u break of. great and easy class!!! take him only 2 prensentations for the semester as homework!! BTW hes good to look at
interesting class--teacher is really nice, cracks clever jokes--lecture 1/2hr then meet w. TA--SUPER EASY!-take him if u can
Sowerby is extremely intelligent and experienced in his field. I would highly recommend taking a class with him. I learned a lot in this class without having to do a lot of ridiculous busy work, which is always a plus.
I love the way he breaks up long classes with discussion and then his lecture. He is passionate about what he teaches and keeps my interest
He is a great professor. He goes at just the right pace. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to take Psych 250!
Dr. Sowerby made Psy 307 one of my favorite classes. He's clear about expectations, and you get to apply concepts in your life. He's very knowledgeable in his field, & always willing to help students. The only complaints are from those who don't study. Tests are on Powerpoint and specific readings, very light compared to other classes. AAA+++
I loved David Sowerby and thought he was a great teacher. He is pretty entertaining during lectures, but he does go pretty fast sometimes, so bring your laptop if you can. His tests are straight forward and only what he lectures on (the book does help clarify somethings).
David is an absolutely amazing teacher. Not only is very easy to get along with, but he is also extremely flexible with situations that need due dates extended, if need be. He was my absolute savior when I had brain surgery. He has so much knowledge to share and I HIGHLY recommend taking this class and any other of his classes. Awesome teacher.
Sowerby is such a good professor. The class is an easy A, he curves by an extreme amount. Attendance is mandatory, but the work and tests are so easy its completely worth it. GREAT UPPER DIVISION GE!!
he is very passionate about the clas, which makes it more interesting. he is a great guy
This teacher is one of the best in the psychology department. He really knows what he is teaching and makes the material easy to understand. He also loves this field. He assigns which pages to read in the textbook and his tests are straight and to the point. I highly recommend this teacher! You will learn a lot from him and not be disappointed!
I didn't like this class at all. It didn't feel like any educating was taking place...it just seemed like blah blah to fill up four hours every week. An enormous amount of class time is for student presentations, and these are moronic. At least a 1/2 hr. every class is TA groups, and this was time wasted as well.
I LOVED this class! He made this topic super interesting because he's so knowledgeable from his own experiences. Class is super easy. I am really interested in class topics now because of him. He's an awesome teacher and I'm definately going to take 302 with him.
awesome teacher
easy class= not learning anything. looks are not everything , nothing when it comes to education, no substance just a load of hot air.
Awesome teacher and really knows the material! He is super easy to get along with and is clear on expectations. Tests are easy if you do the reading and attend class lectures! LOVED THIS CLASS/PROFESSOR!!
Great teacher. 4 tests, including the final. Final is not cumulative. Have to write two papers and they are easy. TAKE HIM!!!
He does not tell you anything you don't already know. Choose a different instructor if you want to leave the class having learned something new.
Professor Sowerby is a great teacher (and a therapist as well). He goes into depth about the material and will require you to take plenty of notes. His tests are very easy (by reading the page numbers he gives) as long as you do take him seriously. If you really want a good psychology class, take him. That's my advice.
Do not buy the book. Review the very few pages in library. Very easy. If only he had better communication skills; perhaps the class would understand what he was saying.
If you are a cute girl take this class. I feel like he graded based on appearance rather than content, some of the men gave very powerful presentations who received poor grades. I slapped together a lame presentation and put on some make up and he gave me a great grade and additional feedback after class. Not one to complain, but out of line.
David is super nice and will answer you questions probably more than you would have expected. He has a lot of experience with different psych subjects. lecture is not mandatory but the discussion after in small groups of ~10 are. Actually fun & you get to know people you wouldnt have other wise. TAKE HIM! Don't buy text book either. Has OCD haha
Great class! Probably the easiest class I have ever taken, but definitely not boring. I learned a lot even though I put close to zero effort into this class. Very clear professor and knows what he's talking about. This class made me very interested in Psych! Highly recommended; if you show up, you will get an A (an A is anything over 80%, no joke).
Great teacher. He gives easy to understand examples throughout his lectures. The material is very interesting. He is always in a pleasant mood. Definitely recommend.
BEST CLASS!! TAKE HIM! Any class class you take with him you will do fine! 307 was pretty good. all you have to do is show up/mett with your groups so you can sign in.PLUS, he grades on a curve!!
He is probably my most favorite teacher at SSU. So helpful, clear, and understanding. He is so smart and has so many interesting things to say. I can't wait to take his class again! honestly though, don't buy the book... just read it in the library!
Outstanding Professor. Take this class. You will enjoy it deeply. You will learn a lot and have a good time. The work is straight forward, just follow the guid lines. He made psychology so interesting that he gave me an interest in it. The professor is awesome. Take this class even if you don't need it. Highly Anticipated.
AMAZING professor and class. Hardly any work at all just a wonderful learning experience- you'll learn quite a bit about yourself! CAN NOT stress enough how great he is and Psych classes with him.
He is a really good professor definitely take his class. I have no complaints whatsoever.
Easy class. 80 and above are considered an A. 3 test including final. 2 easy papers, pass or fail. Easy ad fun class. Makes it very interesting. Would take him again!
Really liked this class. He was a great lecturer and I never got bored with lectures. Take notes word for word on the powerpoint he presents and you will be fine. Didn't study at all and I got a B in the class. The only part I didn't like were the discussion groups at the end of the class. Found them really boring and pointless.
Dr. Sowerby is a great person, unfortunately a sub-par instructor. He should not be teaching a course outside of his existential specialty. His tests are out of the book, but poorly worded and holds attendance over your head so you can listen to him read information you don't need off of PowerPoints. I enjoy this topic, but abhorred this class.
The class itself is fairly easy. He just gives pretty difficult tests. He's very picky about the little details so you definitely need to do the reading at least a little bit. His class basically goes: lecture with power points, break, breakout groups, never ever get out early. But he's a nice guy and interesting topic so, I enjoyed it mostly
Participation is easy, but the tests not so much
He's a funny guy and overall a really good teacher. Show up and listen to him talk, then break into your smaller groups and "present" your papers and you're pretty much guaranteed to pass. You do have to study for the tests, they are kind of hard, but hey, you're in college, your job is to study!
Sowerby is awesome! Tests are hard but passable if you do the work.
He is an amazing professor. Classes go until the end, attendance is a must, 2 papers/presentations, midterm, and final. For the tests, read the pages he gives you and you will pass. He does different grades. A 70% is a B- which helps alot. He is someone you would want under your belt for references since he is really successful.
I took this class on a Thursday night. We spent an hour and a half in lecture and the rest of the time in breakout groups. There were three tests (which he gives you the exact page numbers to read from) and two papers about yourself that you read to your breakout group for credit or no credit. It's ridiculously easy.
Loved him! His lectures can be long but he always gives you the book page numbers for what you need to study for the tests. Copy down his power points and study those along with the book pages . Discussion is where attendance is taken so you HAVE to go, he assigns 2 papers and the final was just on the chapters we were studying at the time.
Sowerby is one of the coolest and easiest professors ever! He's very layed back. His lectures are not mandatory but the class session is. He gives you all the page numbers that will be on his test so you HAVE to READ! There's 4 test and 2 short papers that are Credit no Credit. The best part about his teaching style is how he curves the grades!
best psych teacher hands down. very clear and helpful. only two tests including final. two presentations that are super easy. get the book to study for tests and go to lectures because you need to know the information from the powerpoints. easy A!
4 tests including non cumulative final. 2 very easy 4 page papers. Lectures for about an hour and a half and then break into small groups for discussion. Gives page numbers for the text to review for each test so you don't actually have to go to lecture. Gives random breaks during lecture.
Really interesting class if you are into Intuition and the more spiritual/psychicish side to Psychology. You basically show up for an hour and do a lecture for a few weeks and then you sit in a circle while a few people each week present their intuitive experience. Your grade is attendance (up to 2 absences), participation, and your presentation.
He teaches topics as a show or display. His tests are tricky but at least only specific page numbers are assigned. He projects himself onto others and uses spirituality for justification of relational aggression. I would never take him again, and he is jealous or something of people who are extra sensory, bad ego.
His voice is just too mono-toned. It's hard to keep up with his lectures. Super confusing he's never clear gives you a defintion then his defintion and on the test they both appear so who knows which one is the correct one.
Completely easy. Only have two papers for attendance (20 %) the rest of your grade is from the four test you have (which all are 20% each) The "final" is test number four which isn't a cumulative final.
All of our work is graded by our assigned TA, who is not a Psychology Major and who knows nothing of the topics that students present. I have heard so much incorrect information presented by my classmates that I myself have had to speak up and correct. This is a terrible class set up and an absolute waste of my time.
Awesome professor, I wish I could take another class with him. He tells you exactly in the syllabus what he expects from you. Only 2 presentations, 2 tests including the final and he curves!!!
Ego-driven professor who chooses to have limited interaction with students. His class is part lecture, part group component. The group component was unfulfilling, being directed by a peer TA, and mainly consisted of questions about ambiguity and thoughts related to human existence. The lectures are uninspired. Finished out being disinterested.
I took Psychology Dialogue Series (on the topic of Diversity) with Dr. Sowerby, which was an easy and interesting class. He brought in guest speakers from SSU and the community to talk about different groups of people, organizations, mental illnesses, and more. There was only one short paper due. If you need an extra unit, take this C/NC class!
Sowerby is nice. Class consists of lecture for 1st half, meet with assigned group to present 2 papers (which are super easy to write) during the 2nd half, and 4 tests. Grades on the most massive curve I've ever seen. You have to really try to not get an A. I didn't open the book at all. Almost all necessary info for tests comes from lecture.
Class is broken down into 4 tests (20 points each) and 2 papers/presentations (10 points each). Tests are not super complicated, he lectures straight from the book so if you memorize what he lectures on, you will probably get an A. He also curves the test grade which is nice. 1-1.5 hours of lecture then 1 hour in groups. Get ready to write/type!
very nice and caring prof! don't be intimidated by the in class presentation on the book, you get to choose your own book and you can just sit down at the front and explain how it personally relates to you. 2nd presentation is on your own topic of personal growth. tests are tricky b/c of wording, study and take good notes as there are only 2 tests.
tests or based solely on all of this mumbo jumbo experiental transpersonal blah blah lectures and you don't really need the book since that doesn't make any sense either. memorize which theorist did what. attendance counts towards your grade. TA groups are just deep group discussions. 2 "presentations" and 2 tests total. curves his tests! he's nice
Second time I have taken him, same format as 250. Lectures for about an hour an a half then break into small groups to talk (run by Ta's) Two easy papers, four tests. If you go to lecture, take notes, and review before the test you'll pass. Pretty easy. Nice. Tries to crack jokes but often repeats the same ones and tells many of the same stories.
Show up to class, doesn't post lectures online and tests are exactly the info on lectures. Just write whats on the screen, goes fast so use a laptop. Gives you pages to read, if you want an A read but if not you easily get a B without reading. Only few questions on test based on the book. 4 tests, two easy papers. Lectures then small groups.
Good teacher. Give you the ability to pass the class with an A, but you have to do the work. 2 paper/presentations, and 4 tests (curved). Would take Sowerby again.
Great professor. Please take his class, it will be one of the best classes you take here. Graded on 2 4-page papers and 4 tests (which are curved).
Sowerby was a dope professor. Take him for sure. In psy 250 we were graded on 4 multiple choice exams and 2 papers/presentations. He curves all the exams. I took the 7-9:45pm class and we never really ended early. This class was an easy A though. Show up and take good notes. Presentations aren't bad- they're in front of your weekly small groups :)
Very easy class, tests are curved to be an A- average, so if you pay attention in the class, I don't see how you could fail. he does a decent job teaching the material by using examples, but he will constantly go on tirades about spiritual pseudoscience regarding things like intuition and ESP. Surprised he's qualified to be a professor.

He is the nicest teacher I have ever had. He is VERY willing to help you out if you aren't doing well (which is impossible in this class) he even puts page numbers from the book with the material that will be on the test up at the end of lectures. I love this class.
Professor Sowerby is one of the most brilliant professors I have ever witnessed. He is articulate, precise, efficient and highly inspiring. I feel extremely grateful to have him as a teacher.
Grade is based on attendance, 3 papers, and tests that are pretty easy as long as you pay attention to lectures- which are actually interesting. I actually looked forward to this class every week. Super easy GE and great prof
Take his class! Honestly one of the best, most straight forward teachers I've ever had! You get out what you put in to the class, study, read the book, and re read the notes. 4 lecture tests, one paper, one presentation. All around great teacher who's well respected! TAKE THIS CLASS!!
I have taken 2 of his classes. Both were very easy. For PSY490 Humanistic, Exstential&Transp. Psy, he gives a few short lectures a week to watch at your own pace. Gave 2 exams, as long as you take notes on the lectures, you will have the answers. 2 presentations through phone call with just him, 10 minutes long. Easy grader. Very straight forward
Very interesting material, you can tell he loves what he's teaching. He makes difficult concepts easier to understand and connects them to daily life. Only thing is that he's not the most energetic professor, so a four-hour class during dinner time is boring at times. Wish there were some small assignments so I didn't stress about the few so much.
David Sowerby was awesome. He is a very nice guy who genuinely wants his students to succeed. The class is very easy, enjoyable, and interesting. There are no assignments, just tests and one paper that you can submit as many times as you want until you get a score you are happy with. This class is a great choice for a GE requirement.
Would highly recommend if you need an easy GE to balance out your schedule. The entire grade is based off of 4 tests and 1 paper. The tests are online 20 point multiple choice and all the answers are on his class slides which he posts to canvas upfront. The paper is a bit time consuming but he lets you resubmit it as many times as you want. Easy A
I have taken 2 of Professor Sowerby's courses (Psych 250 & Psych 270) and have really learned a lot from him. He is a really caring professor and seems to really love what he is teaching. Psych 270 - self discovery: was a really amazing class and I highly recommend taking it with him!
Passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches. Monotone voice and long evening classes made me very sleepy by the middle. Only two assignments all semester - both short presentations with outlines. Interesting class, but I don't feel like I got much out of it. Wish it was more interactive.
Makes it literally impossible to get anything other than an A because he doesn't care very much. Good class if you're looking to knock out a GE but definitely do not recommend it if you're a psychology major. Didn't learn anything and wished I had a different professor all semester.
A WONDERFUL professor. He is lecture-based for PSY250, Intro to Psych. We had a few tests throughout the semester and one midterm paper that required two pages minimum & max. He is very passionate about his work and what he has learned. Sowerby tells excellent stories about his own experiences.
Dr. Sowerby was clear regarding with what he expected in the class, and provided 4 exams and 1 essay throughout the semester. His lectures would go for nearly 3 hours, but were optional with lectures posted online. His style of teaching is laid back and is an easy A. However, wanting to learn from his class is your responsibility.
Very monotone voice that made it difficult for me to stay awake through the three hour class, in the nicest way possible. Has some jokes that made us laugh. Curves tests if needed, allows multiple paper resubmissions. Easy A as long as you make some effort to meet him halfway. Class not mandatory, but please go because he's a cool guy.
Dr Sowerby is friendly and very knowledgeable on the subject of psychology. His PSY 250 is mostly lectures pulled pretty directly from the textbook, so its pretty easy to stay on top even if you miss classes, as long as you got the textbook you should be set.
Dr. Sowerby was amazing. He was my favorite professor during my undergrad program.
I admire David for his passion regarding psychology. He is an amazing lecturer and always recognized when his audience needed a break which I greatly appreciated. There were no quizzes or exams but there were two presentations and a paper. Overall, the class, which he intended it be so, was very healing and fulfilling for myself and others.
Prof. Sowerby makes his PSY250 class engaging and manageable. Grading is fair, with curved tests and paper resubmissions. Lectures can be dry, but going to class is worthwhile. Unstuck study proved helpful for exam prep.
Highly recommend professor Sowerby! Very passionate in his field, and his lectures are both engaging and incredibly informative. Course structure is designed for success, with four tests and unique paper resubmission policy until you're satisfied with your grade! His enthusiasm makes the class really enjoyable! He truly wants his students to pass!
Professor Sowerby is very caring and passionate about his teaching. I learned a lot in this class and was able to connect many of the topics to my personal life and experiences. The class includes two tests and two presentations. Highly recommend.
He was really nice and awesome and it really isn't that hard of a class. Dr. Sowerby is also just hilarious
There are two exams and two presentations throughout the whole semester. He provides excellent feedback and is not a tough grader. I would highly recommend taking his classes. The presentations each have to be 10 minutes long but if you are under that its fine. Not strict on attendance. If you are struggling, reach out because he is really chill.
Great professor, valuable material that's good for life - not just a classroom. 10/10. Wasn't listed but I took PSY300 WELL-BEING.
David is a great professor! He is very knowledgable in the subjects he teaches and it is clear he is enthusiastic about them, too. There are two tests and two presentations but they are both very easy. Presentations are 10 min maximum & tests are fully multiple choice.
Very easy class. Attendance not required. 4 tests all on canvas and one paper due mid semester. He gives you multiple chances until you get 100% as well. Impossible to fail. Great class
david's an actual legend. so funny and loves feedback or participation of any kind. really great professor glad i took him
