Made lectures fun, interesting. Has a sense of humor.

His tests are straight from lecture notes, so pay attention in class..good guy
Great teacher. You'd really enjoy philosophy with him!
Funny guy and very clear. Easy to understand, don't even need books to pass.
fun course. he's pretty good.
best prof i've ever had, very funny, lectures were entertaining and informative
His lectures are clear; he's funny; uses great examples

Great prof - made philosophy lectures a joy to attend.
too bad York doesn't allow some profs to teach with their shirts off
Overall good professor. Contains myriad sources for anyone to further their education on their own. Very resourceful. Funny. The best thing about him is his enthusiasm while teaching. I have had the pleasure of attending three of his courses.
great insight and humour made lectures interesting and attentive. best prof ive had
he reminds me of anthony robbins - projects a clear voice, uses funny examples, and is confident enough in his lectures that u'll think u know everything too.
Wow...Prof.Stamos!!! Well... his classes are very interesting! I love them... He has this aura that you can't just ignore him!!! He seems to be smart, which is a good thing!! Wow...he's eyes... they just kill me!!! I should ask him for exta help....lol!
oh plz...he's not that hot. but I do agreed he's the humour guy(not to mention a bit disgusting sometimes)
okay, i'm just going to let him sit on middle ground with this one. He's young, smart and funny. BUT!! He's extremely boring and monotone. He waits far too long to elaborate on his points and he shows no interest in this course.
This guy is an awsome professor, his lectures are very interesting and are very clear to the point that no one has to ask any questions. Everyone should take this class!!!! He's great!!!
Great prof! Good looking too although his excessive sex jokes are a turn off. Presents the material in a clear, interesting and unbiased manner.Tests, essays and exams are very fair. Good sense of humor although I wish he would act less like a college boy
Best prof i ever had, easy test, easy essays, funny guy.
unclear with his lectures.... etc...
A good example of a superficial scholar. His personal thoughts are unoriginal, and hence his markings on original thoughts by students are poor.
at first, he seemed articulate and organized, but once the conceptual analysis started, he contradicts his thoughts and is subjective in marking - quite contrary to the theory of conceptual analysis! however, he is genuinely nice and interesting
hes the best prof ive ever had..
love his lectures, hes clear and funny.
Speaks clear, even when he has to correct himself. He lectures at a balanced pace and repeats those concepts and phrases that need to be emphasized. If you are a skeptic you will agree with him on many things, and will be used to his line of thinking.
Excellent Prof- best I've had in 4 years at York. Dr. Stamos is intelligent, funny and helpful. Best of all, he knows how to teach! (Can't be said of most York profs!) Two thumbs up for this prof.
This guy is awesome! Had him for 3 years straight and ne never seems to become any less intelligent, funny or cooperative. ONE HELL of a PROF! YORK U needs to hire more like him and they had better do it for the sake of the student body! 2 Thumbs up 2 STAMOS!
listens well, his class seems a little fun : )
Best Prof. I ever had, York University should have more people like him.
One of the best profs I've had. He presents the material in an organized clear manner and is extremely funny. Can't wait for next term where he will be teaching my phil 2015 class. Reminds me of Ben Stiller, a great prof nonetheless.
Best Prof. and best person I have ever met. Intelligent, approchable, funny, good looking, extremly prepared and educated...he has it all! I wish I had Philosophy as a major so that I could take all his courses! You will love to go to his class and learn! You will regret that the course it's over!
He is extaordinary! York needs Profs like him, not "snors". Very passionate about Phylosophy and very smart. Every lecture and class discussion is enjoyable to the last drop.
Dr Stamos is a brilliant professor, he is a great speaker, very clear and funny. He's so organized and the material he covers is interesting and he makes it easy to understand. I'd take any class he teaches again.
friendly, approachable, nice guy
clear and articulate, but considering he is a philosophy prof...i think he does it 2 seriously. he's philosophical about everything and even expects his first year students 2 b aspiring philosophers. he should be more easy going, especially when it comes to tests and exams.not too helpful in that d
Funny guy, interesting (for the most part) in lectures...but isn't the most helpful prof in the world. Could stand to check his ego at the door when dealing directly with his students. Won't be selecting him as my prof again. Confucius has spoken!
This is my favourite class. The tests and exams are so straightforward, no tricks. It's actually possible to get an A+. He's a joker too, especially his stories about ex-gf's and bartending. cool prof
Stamos is a pretty fun teacher. The material can be kind of confusing be he does a good job of explaiing it.
Good, funny prof. Explains things well. Whoever is interested in intro to philo should take his class.
Cracks alot of jokes, and is very entertaining. But he reads his notes out, so you'll have to copy everything down. The readings are very difficult, dont bother doing them. Tests are fair, based directly out of his class notes. A good gened for science students.
Don't know about philosophy but in modes of reasoning he would always contradict himself. i don't think he really understood what he was trying to teach. it was too hard to understand what he wanted/how he wanted things done. the material was totally subjective, but he would generally make it seem like something was the only answer when it wasn't.
Anyone who bashes him is just mad because they got a bad mark...i thought he was great! i'm not a very smart person and i ended up with an A in his class...if u show up to class you'll understand the material..it's like he says..you get it with practice!!
Dr. Stamos is in my opinion one of the only phil profs who knows what hes talking about at york. Philosophy of science was one of my fav classes ever and Prof. Stamos couldnt have presented the material any better. A great prof. overall.
Very funny guy and having a lot of fun in his class... if you do all his homework and attend his class. You will 100% get a B... @_@"
Professor Stamos is truly an excellent Prof! He explains information well, and in an interesting way. He is very helpful and always willing to talk with you to help clarify his lessons. He treats students like people, and is very approachable. Truly, he was one of the best Professor that I've had and I learned so much about philosophy from him. He'
Great lecturer, very clear and at times funny. But he's not very approachable though. But the exams are fair and the lectures were great.
He's awesome! and pretty hot too ;)
i've had him 3 times!!! great ,man!!! very hot!
not a great prof b/c he offerrs no office hours when the class needs the most. may have a nice personality, but not a great educator.
a wonderful teacher who is clear and knows his stuff. is very patient and answers all questions in class. he doesnt like emails so much but this is understandable because it makes much more sense when done in person. he is very understanding and he is the best prof i had this year. kudos to prof. stamos!gd guy! you'll be fine if u do hmwk n study!
Not available outside of class. very clear in what he expects. marks rather fair.
good prof, very clear of wat he wants. DONT miss a class or else u wont know wat to do in assignments, very easy marker, its not hard to get a B+ in the course. overall a very good professor.
Very good lecturer. Summarizes readings effectively.
He makes **** jokes. Not available via email. Generally ok but seems to have a thing against feminism.
Great Prof. Really clear and easy. Never had experience out of class with him, so can't rate his helpfulness.
This Prof. is the best there is. I've been at York for three years and he's still the best. He's hilarious, which is extremeley important (since some profs can be boring), he's very learned, and took the time outside of class to explain concepts I didn't quite get. Enjoy him while you can. I haven't had any prof. like him yet.
hes funny and his lectures are clear and concise. great prof.
Good looking & hot. He's not very clear on what he wants. He's super clear about what he doesn't like, doesn't like emails, or questions after class. Pretty funny guy overall, but not very helpful.
Stamos is a great prof! I think he's sooooo funny, very dirty yet humorous! haha pay close attention to what he wants in the assignments and follow his guidelines to a T, it's the only way you will get good marks! overall, i recommend him!
This prof is very very good. He uses the textbook heavily, as lectures consist of his recapping the readings and offering different interpretations. He also will add his own thoughts on the material that was read in order to give us more perspective. Not very accessible out of lecture, but still very good nonetheless. Highly recommended.
I'm in my 4th year and he's one of the best professors I've had at York. You'll love his class. The topics are very interesting and he makes them very clear. The most enjoyable course I've ever had.
he makes everything really clear and is an amazing professor
Yes he is hot and whatever, however he is a very bad teacher. His tests are horrible and contain content he never really even went over. Phil 1000 was a waste of my $1100.
One of the best pro in York!
I think the class I took is one that he didn't care too much about..he seemed to have an unenthusiastic manner towards the empricists and made the materials a little boring,I'm a pretty committed student and his lectures were ones I tried to avoid. He's obviously intelligent but there was something missing from his lectures.
I took his meaning of life course. 1st he was very morbid. 2. he was uninteresting. 3. his jokes weren't funny. I didn't like the way he taught. he strayed from topics too often.
Exams were too hard, class average for first midterm was below 50%. Unrelated questions on the midterm that gave you false free will in "choosing" 3 out of 5 questions were redundant and probably unacademic. Hard marker on exams and the essay is is not easy either ... Would never take his courses ever and tell everyone to stay away or prepare to su
He meant well, and what he did talk about during lecture was really understandable, however, what he tested you on was completely out of nowhere. In addition to that, his tests and essays (yes essays!) were based on a super strict grading key. If you missed out one random quote you lost a mark (/15)! I really like philosophy, and hated this class!
He always has very insightful and interesting lectures. I would love to take classes with him again.
Very clear lectures, which are helpful for getting the main point of the more complicated readings. Tries to make his lectures funny and interesting. Tests are very fair, and not that hard if you study. Follow the instructions to the letter on essays, and you should be fine. The only complaint is he's a little monotonous, which can be really boring
Okay seriously he is a nice guy--knows his stuff, funny, his exams give u choice which is good! the essay was hard but the marking was worse (not his fault) overall enjoyed.. you dont even need 2 read if u goto class.. and just read if u dont.. i never read more then 3 ARTICLES
Prof Stamos was awesome, the subject matter was interesting and his lectures were insightful and fun, he's extremely intelligent and is fair on essay assignments and exams. Show up, read and you'll do fine
Excellent prof... smart guy. He was my favorite prof this year. He made class both educational and interesting. Lectures are not mandatory, but simplify/clarify readings. The exam is easy (provided you do the readings). Tutorials were a waste of time, but unfortunately there is a mark for attendace.
Good prof. Very helpful. Speaks clearly, sometimes a little too slowly.
Seemed a little rude when responding to my e-mail, but then again, it's hard to tell from an e-mail. Lectures are clear, but can be quite boring because he's voice gets rather monotonous. But, the lectures are extremely helpful for clarifying the texts. Tests are fair as long as you study. Always gives choice in test questions and essays.
Very good prof, lectures were interesting, he was easy to listen to unlike other boring profs. His exams are fair if you do the readings. I would definitly take another one his classes again!
First the good: he obviously knows his stuff, and his lectures are very helpful in clarifying the main points of the readings. BUT, he speaks in a monotone, tends to be repetitive, and often goes off on tangents that are only vaguely related (some of which are interesting). Workload isn't terrible, and marking is fair. Basically reads us his notes.
Okay. Monotone but does know his stuff. Repeats info and goes has many asides which can throw you off. If you understand the readings, you can scrap the lecture or vice versa. Not bad but not great.
One of the easiest course YorkU has to offer. David makes the class fun. If you have to take MODR, take it with him! I put zero effort in the class and got a B+
He is approachable, funny, and explains things clearly in lectures. But he is not really one of those professors who goes out of their way to further help you outside of class or after class. He prefers you to ask him during lecture or bring your problems to the tutorial leader. Lectures were interesting and well taught!
Great teacher. He has a weired sense of humor which i love. He is very clear on what he teaches. Very understanding and he listens to students when they are giving their opinions. The only problem he has is that he doesn't put the material he teaches anywhere online. If you miss a class you are screwed. Each of his classes are extremely important
I am in my third year, and I can say honestly that this is by far the BEST professor at York University. If you don't take a course with him, you will deeply regret it.
Monotone professor but if you attend his classes you should be fine for the test/exam. You have one essay, one midterm, and one final. As long as you attend class write down his main points you should be fine for test.
His lecturing is very clear. He explains everything very well and left me feeling like I understood everything. His exams, though, may throw you off. He puts a lot of questions seemingly unrelated to the course material or that just don't make sense on them. But overall is a good teacher.
intro to applied ethics was one of the best courses i ever took at york..stamos tests are fair, he gives many options and the grading scheme is also pretty fair..i got an A+ in his class so i was really satisfied
not a good prof. got off topic, liked the suck-up kids, had very little compassion. i had an accident on the way to class one day **it was a make up class, so not even a day when we were SUPPOSED to be there and the accident was bad, it was on the 401** and he didnt care, he still took marks off for me being late. interesting class, bad prof
great prof, attending lectures is a must, fair marker. good sense of humor
When looking at the trends on his reviews it seems to be that at times he marks fairly easy and at other times he's the complete opposite, with that being said, more than half the class failed, I got one of the highest marks and I got a D on my midterm, however he is very clear, and intresting to listen to during lecture, proceed with caution!
Never responds to emails! Not a nice guy.
This professor has to be one of the worst I've ever encountered. He talks about about evolution and science rather than actual philosophy. He discusses philosophers that he agrees with rather than all those on the topic. He needs keep his arrogance at the door and he puts stuff on the course of which he has no knowledge.
Do not take this professor if you want to keep your GPA high! The tests are hard, will ask questions to make you fail. I regret so much that this class with him!
very easy going teacher, makes the material interesting, lectures are mandatory for getting a good mark but they are fun to participate in. his exams can be a bit challenging but his essays are a bit easier since he provides the topics based on whats taught in class.
A great professor teaching a valuable course. Make sure you take good notes during lecture.
i dont understand why this prof has such a good rating. 1, the course does not have a website and thats annoying. 2, he has 12 lectures and provides to test outline/question sheet. 3, he has a midterm exam, and a final one which also covers mid term material. 4, no slides/posted... if you miss a lecture good luck. so i ask again..why a good rating.
Pretty bad proff. Bad at teaching, lacking the ability to connect to the class. Doesn't make course interesting. Has no course outline. Exams are REALLY hard, asks you to read 2 books and asks you a few definitions and compare some of the ideas amongst each other. HOWEVER, the textbook which he wrote is really well written and interesting.
like the last 2 posters said, this prof is in his own world. hes fun to listen to and w/e but at the end of the day marks are what matters. his tests are horrible not that their hard, but that he literally makes you study 2 books while the test is like 2 pages. also, go to lecture because some of the stuff he says are NOWHERE in the book.no website
If you go to all the lectures, you basically don't even have to read the textbooks. He is so clear and concise about all of his topics. studying for tests and exams was a breeze - just go over all the lecture notes and you're in. He is very clear on making you know what will be on the test. Also, he is HILARIOUS and so much fun to listen to.
Prof Stamos is awesome. I enjoyed each of his lectures. He's very clear and his lectures are fascinating...as are the readings. This course makes your reevaluate your beliefs and way of thinking. You can tell he is passionate about what he's teaching and that makes it all the more interesting. But lecture notes should available online!
His is very unclear about teaching a modes of reasoning course. He just makes you copy down from the slide sheet with no clear explaination about the purpose of the steps. He is very clear about attending the class, and will not break from that. I hated this course although it had an interesting description when i signed up for it.
Amazaing Prof... Extremely funny and easy going... I recommend him to everyone. It was an absolute pleasure to be in his class. He is very clear and makes his lectures and class discussions very interesting... If you are thinking about taking one of his classes, DO IT!!!
absolutely horrible professor. Perhaps the most boring man I've ever encountered... he talks in a monotone voice and gets so off topic about how much he thinks his modes of reasoning course should be mandatory. And incredibly insensitive! Doesn't provide assistance to students with mental disabilities either... I regret taking his course
very funny prof. always talking about comitting suicide off the ross building. lectures are somewhat helpful. TAAAKE NOTES. do the reading PRIOR to class. recommended: sure why not
Great professor, lures you into the topic, and has effective techniques of clearly explaining. Tells funny jokes. :)
He's awesome! I aced his MODR course, he's very lenient with his marking for assignments which helps! If your confused about something you can ask him, he's friendly and will you out. If your planning to take his MODR course, go for it! :D
He's a great professor! Course topics were very interesting. One midterm, an essay and a final exam. I did readings before class and it really helps in understanding his lecture.
Very clear professor, material is enlightening in the way that he explains it. I recommend any course with him.
By far the funniest professor! Very great communication skills. Always prepared to give an exciting lecture. Easily approachable, and cool to talk to.
Poor teaching skills! No specific instructions to follow. POOR EVALUATION SKILLS, red markings all over your paper without any explainations. He only put initials on marking which makes it confusing enough to figure out what they means. He is approachable but not helpful.
I remembered a student seeking for help on a concept that was previously learned in class, she raised hand and asked appropriately if the prof. could go through that concept again with the whole class before handing in one of our term assignment. His response was riduclous. He said it was something that should've been asked in last lectures.
Philosophical genius.
Best prof i've ever had. took the meaning of life with him and it made me fall in love with school. ive never had a prof more funny, articulate, and smart in my whole 4 years of university.
one of the horrible professors I've ever had.red markings all over your paper is the only thing that he's good at. the most boring human I've ever seen.
Maybe he's terrible at teaching Modes of Reasoning but I find he was terrific in Philosophy. Lectures were always clear and relevant to the text. Plus, he's excellent at explaining certain articles that were confusing and hard to understand. Got an A in that class without working very hard. Tutorials help a lot too. (Y)
Amazing professor. Made me fall in love with philosophy. Always calm, clear and sharp. I especially like his commitment to the truth and his courage to shock you out of your prejudices and biases.
This guy knows how to deliver a lecture you can actually stay awake for. I had him 10:30 twice a week and found myself attentive and interested. His tests were fair. You definitely can't get away with not finishing all your readings--you have to know it all for the test. He's my favourite professor I've had so far. Also very well-read.
Sense of humor is very dry. He's not too interested in asking "how your day was" however he's still a great prof. Enjoyed his teaching method, definitely explains things in a clear manner. Definitely a favourite. Some may not like his "dry humor-teaching style" but I enjoyed it.
ive fallen in love with philosophy because of this professor. never had a prof with an amazing teaching style such as his. He keeps you interested enough to never fall asleep. totally helpful and clear with his lectures. its a shame that he doesn't teach too many courses.
Worst professor I have ever had. He was not helpful whatsoever, he would say "Once I am done teaching, do not email me questions, do not ask me for anything." He was hard to understand and so confusing, he was rude and didn't seem to care about his students. I would recommend switching profs.
I loved his teaching style and his dry sense of humor. He is very understanding if you have any issues relating to missed exams. Also, very dreamy:)
Great Prof, extremely well read and passionate about his topics. Love his sense of humour as well!
I dont no what people are saying hes unreal, keeps class entertaining, and has great life lessons
A professor with guts and a lack of restraint when it comes to pointing out stupidity and illogical reasoning. Great lecturer, and thinks in the same way as Richard Dawkins. If you want to truly learn how the world operates, and how to be logical, take a course with Stamos.
Deserves a Nobel prize, just genius and definitely not bad to look at
Generally good professor, he's entertaining and passionate about philosophy. The assignments were unreasonably complex and time consuming. The biggest challenge in the assignments was trying to perfect his strange and very atypical format that will never be used again outside of his course.
Never in my life have I ever given a professor such a great rating. Stamos is one of THE best philosophy professor at York! His lectures are always engaging and his passion for philosophy is amazing. He will NOT repeat himself to students more than he does in class to those who don't pay attention in class. It is a UNIVERSITY right? He's the Best!
The materials covered has a very narrow scope, I admit he knows how to teach them, and the psychopath rants were mildly amusing. But seriously, he preach way too much against post-modernist philosophy. I appreciate his stance against dogmas, but how he replaces that with his own dogma in his book really is really unsightly to see.
David Stamos is quite a person. His jokes are kind of dry but he's very knowledgeable. He's very good with modern news and concepts and makes you understand a variety of concepts after the course. Assignments are a little unreasonably repetitive but he's a fair marker. If I'm going to retake this course, I'll still pick him. Give It A Try!
There are things he is good at, there are things he isn't. But that doesn't stop him from talking about them anyway. And he talks for a LONG TIME about them even with about how "huge" and "important" they are. I didn't pay the ridiculous tuition to see this kind of disingenuous charade. He should really stick to what he is good at.
Very rude and discriminate esl people however he is an esl person himself.
Professor Stamos is pretty good, he's funny, well spoken and teaches the concepts until the students understand. There are no surprises in this class since everything you need to know is present in the syllabus and skeleton notes. He doesn't teach by e-mail, not a problem for me but it may be a problem for some.
Amazing professor. He knows his stuff and is passionate and amazing at what he does. Extremely funny sense of humor. It's not easy to B.S. in his class. He can see through that. Requires a lot of work but it's worth it and he is very reasonable
THE WORST PROF EVER.
Shallow, patronizing, full of himself. It's such a shame too, I was looking forward to a class that's supposed to teach us how to think and argue. When did academia become so pretentious and intellectually impoverished.
Boring, repetitive, full of himself, he is just awful!!
Perfect example of how corrupt the education system is in Ontario. If you value your schooling, PLEASE do not take this prof. Besides the fact that he's rude, and obsessed with himself, I don't think I learned a single thing in this entire course. Probably the worst course and prof to ever exist. Do yourself a favour.
Pretty good prof. Tries to keep his lectures interesting. 1 mid term test, 1 essay, a final, and 10% attendance make-up the grade for all his classes. Liked him enough to take 2 classes with him. Overall a thumbs up.
The fist test is almost impossible to get a good grade on (he prepare you poorly for the test too). But the subsequent assignment require hard effort to get the good grades. I got A by putting a lot of effort into assignments. His instructions for the assignments were very clear. His jokes were not funny. He seems a good guy when I talked to him.
Interesting lectures which he incorporates science and psychology, encouraging all the students to strive to be multi-disciplinary when it come to Philosophy. Tests are fair, and attendance is mandatory for the remaining 10, but his lecturing style (albeit tangential) is always interesting. Easy to talk to during and after class as well. Good prof.
HORRIBLE JUST HORRIBLE. Not at all helpful, he doesn't care or listen. Any questions you may have regarding assignments, he's answer is "You figure it out"
Good for a chat. Tough grader, very knowledgeable.
"it is not wisdom to ignore evidence" ive taken 3 classes with him, and loved it. he's only a fair marker.. but he truly does have a passion for his craft. taking phil1000 (intro to phil) with him is what made me change majors to philosophy.
Lectures are long indeed, I didn't know an hour could feel so long. The fact this guy is posing as a philosophy prof is a total sham. He is dismissive, arrogant, make no attempt to understand viewpoints he deem contrary to his(whether or not they actually are) and uses the classroom as a platform to spread his elitist propaganda. AVOID AT ALL COST.
course is easy and he does a pretty good job at teaching it.. he can be hard to please when it comes to marking but if there's something you don't understand, he'll help you out.
Pretty good Prof. Pretty clear on what he expects and wants. If you do the work and pay attention its easy to get a good grade with him. Expects you to hand in homework every week and is clear what he expects on assignments. Can be a bit of a hard marker but fair. He goes through examples in class and explains what he expects during lectures.
Awful. Avoid him at all cost. He is the worst prof I ever had. I have never seen anyone take a subject I'm interested in and made it so insular.
So hot and great
we all did a 19 page with over 6000 words for the final. I am an ESL student, this essay is a nightmare. i used to think i should never choose this course until i talked with a friend who take the same course with other prof. Have to say, no pain no gain. comparing wast time learn nothing, i think i really know how to analyses essay with David.
Great prof! Lectures can feel very long at times but I like the jokes he uses in lectures to keep you awake. He's very fair overall. The work can be challenging but I learned a lot from him. Very passionate about his topic. Didn't think I'd enjoy philosophy until this class.
he's lectures are long and boring, he's always talking about how he is a philosopher and how great this course is, constantly selling it to students already taking it. When doing in class exercises he never gives you the right answers he leaves you to fill in the blanks (which could be wrong) he doesn't teach the course properly. Horrible prof.
Stamos is unbelievably awful. Monotone, hard to listen to, gives obscure instructions, whatever can be made out are peppered with the most mind-numbingly ivory-tower style of snootiness. A clear example of a pseudo-intellectual who is ruining the university, the philosophy department should feel ashamed for letting this guy teach.
He is both the worst person and the worst prof ever. Not helpful at all, awful accent.
This guy has no idea what he's talking about. Don't take a class with him! Avoid!
A truly awful person. A truly awful class.
Just awful. Tough, ambiguous. Should not be teaching a first year course.
I loved Stamos as a professor. I am a biology student and not use to these kind of courses but his lectures are amazing and he posts his own notes from the text that he uses during the lecture so it's clear, well as clear as PHIL can be. He is very passionate about the material however this makes him a tough marker. Attendance is critical.
Stamos was absolute TRASH. I dreaded everything about this class. The mark breakdown was horrible for a first year class. His lectures are so dry you can't even imagine. he whispers into the mic. this class was the worst I've ever taken. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. PLEASE. FOR YOUR OWN GOOD.
DO NOT take David Stamo's Ethics of Health Care class offered as an elective at Ryerson University. He is a philosopher who expects his students to write according to how he wants it. Unfortunately, we are not philsophers! We are students! This is the WORST class I've ever taken. He is UNFAIR, does not explain well at all, and makes terrible jokes.
He is a great teacher and makes it really clear what he wants from you. The reason you may have trouble with his class is because he wants a logical basis for for everything you write in the midterm, essay and exam. If you have trouble with math courses or critical thinking courses he may not be the prof for you.
You do have to be in class to do well but it is an easy class and he explains exactly what he wants from you. There's one test in the beginning of the semester that is a little hard but it is open book. Then there are a couple easy papers. Overall if you just go to class and listen, it's an easy A. The class is a smaller size and it wasn't boring.
Dr. Stamos is an exceptional educator. A true gentleman who still believes in the art of teaching and writing. His lectures are clear and concise and he is bound to make the class laugh! In order to succeed, you must do the work, however. But you will walk away, as a better writer (and a world of knowledge). It was a pleasure taking his course!!
Intelligent prof who treats you like a human being, also hilarious. Really tough marker.
1hr lecture felt so long. i didn't find the content to be intriguing at all. he makes his notes which you have to fill in or add on to during his lecture. only survived because of the TA who broke down what was important. I barely read the book as well but ended off okay by the grace of God. would not recommend unless you absolutely need it
Prof Stamos was a great prof i don't understand why he's gotten so many bad ratings. He's could be a bit amiguous at times with assignments, but he's not a hard marker AT ALL. He's nice, has a calm voice (some people say monotone but i dont find it monotone its just peaceful) and he's pretty funny. Go to class and you'll get an A.
Okay so David loves to ramble, hes a nice guy but rarely gets to the point of the lecture. I attend class, do my homework and assignments yet I still manage to be lost. He brings up things completely unrelated to course material. Homework every week, 3 assignments, 1 test no exam.
Prof. Stamos likes to go on tangents, a lot! Sometimes, I don't get where he's going with the lecture. He likes to stress that he wants the answers to the tests to be direct to the point, but remember, it's not him who checks your exams, it's the TA. I get the impression he doesn't like science that much. If you're a science major, don't feel bad.
He is passionate about philosophy but he forces students to bend to his ideologies through lectures and essay assignments. Lectures are boring and pointless but you must go as attendance is taken and goes toward your final mark. Fill in the blank lecture notes, no test prep gives students the sense he doesn't want us to do well. Do not recommend.
Professor Stamos lectures are really good and interesting. He always shows the pros and cons in an argument. He is always very clear about what is his opinion and what is the writers voice. Even though "the meaning of life" doesn't sound like a very interesting subject, I had my mind blown away many times. It was an amazing experience.
He was a good guy I can tell. If I knew him outside of class I'm sure I'd like him, but as a professor no. He rambles a lot, gets off topic, mumbles sometimes. He knows what he's talking about but doesn't give super clear instruction. 1 test, 3 assignments, and homework EVERY WEEK! You have to show up too for ALL 3 HOURS. Bad class, okay prof.
This class is an easy A if you are willing to attend lectures and do his homework assignments every week (which are only marked on effort). He gives VERY clear instructions for everything so if you attend class and do EXACTLY as he says you will do very well. If you cant follow instructions and have trouble with attendence best to avoid this prof.
David is a nice guy - very fair grader. Sometimes rambles during lecture, has a quirky but likable sense of humor. Have to work a little bit harder for A+, though an A is very doable Go to class and make sure you pay attention when he's discussing assignment requirements
Amazing professor with epic lectures filled with knowledge in information, very funny and friendly and his material are very interesting. would take with him again
If you take this course with David prepare to have reading all the time. The first two assignments aren't too bad but the last two were just too much. David is a very picky guy and he can be confusing sometimes. Nice guy but I wouldn't take his class again because of the amount of excessive worked put in.
I loved going to this professor's lectures. Every lecture is enjoyable, captivating, and with a little bit of fun (because of the sophisticatedly good sense of humor) The syllabus makes the long readings actually interesting, and you naturally want to see what the next one is going to bring. You'll rethink your whole life after this course though.
Gets off track so easily & every single time, easy to lose focus from online lectures. I feel like he gets annoyed easily, his email responses are horrible/suck. He is often very unclear and confusing in his vid lectures. Textbooks EXPENSIVE, & the Morris Engel textbook isn't even that useful since you'll work on only 3 chpts. Don't miss homework!
Honestly, a solid prof. His lectures are amazing and I love it when his cat pops up during his explanations. Easy marker and approachable. Do not miss any of the participation assignments if you want a free 20%
He grade's easily, tried to be as clear and involved the class as much as possible. Weekly homework are assigned but nothing overly difficult, mostly completion. Lectures are a must in order to do well. Assignments are known and given way before the due date. Highly recommend.
(I took this course online and in one sem instead of one year. I recommend to take it in person and full year). Was a very challenging course so effort must be put in. However, prof is very nice and will answer all your questions so use it to your advantage! I started out with a B- and was able to get up to an A. Effort is key in this course!
Dr. Stamos is great. His lectures are very clear and he tells you what he exactly wants you to do for assignments. He is not the easiest grader, but he is very fair. It's clear that he genuinely cares about his students' learning. The course is not an easy A but it's totally doable with a little bit of extra effort and time.
Avoid if you can, he's a tough professor who expects two 5-7 page essays, in a two-month summer course. Not only that but the material itself is tough. Most students aren't philosphy majors he does not realize this. Grading is tough. Also a note even though the syllabus says otherwise, this course attempt to push a certain viewpoint onto student.
He tells you exactly what he wants from you so if you listen and just replicate what he explains in his lectures you'll do good. But his course is complicated and cryptic, like he won't accept mistakes even if it's just a wording issue. He's chill though but crazy in a philosophy prof kind of way.
2 essays 5-7 pages each 1 final exam. content heavy lectures (politics philosophy theory) might have difficulty grasping content dont need to attend lectures if you do readings loves teaching, passionate extremely clear n strict about what he wants will doc u if u dont do exactly what he says if u follow his rules n try ur best u do extremely well
His instructions are confusing and unclear. If you email him, you will likely receive a rude response. Also, he has very specific formats and guidelines to follow, and marks will be deducted for anything done even slightly incorrectly.
Very knowledgeable and experienced in philosophy. Decades of experience teaching the subject, but because of this, is a very difficult professor. Had to put in a lot of work to be in the "A" grade range, as the Prof Stamos was a very difficult (although a fair) marker.
Knows his stuff, but is arrogant, confusing, & takes marks for not matching instructions to the last detail. Id get it if instructions were obvious, but he hides them at minute 27 of weekly video #3 never to be brought up again, and wonders how you didn't see it. I swear he's trying to be mysterious. he'll also crash out if you send him an email.
Do not take a class with this prof, I don't even know how he has so much 5 stars. Does not provide feedback or clear instructions but thinks he does. And don't even think about emailing him cause you'll just get a rude response and no help even if his error caused you to email him. I'll prob be getting an A/A+ but it's not cause of him at all.
Very unclear instructions. Complains about low marks when not a single person achieved higher than a 17/20 on an assignment. Even people who did well on the other ones. Can't email him. VERY UNCLEAR INSTRUCTIONS. Don't take this course with this professor.
DO NOT TAKE. Yes, he provides skeleton notes that you add onto after each lecture, and still managed to leave out so many details when you see the comments left on the graded assignments. Emailing is likely to be useless because he discourages it as much as possible. Just don't take this course especially not as a gen ed.
WORST PROF EVER DOES NOT GIVE CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS, GRADES SO HARD AND SUPER RUDE.
Take MODR1760 with Cael Cohen. Stamos is rude, unproffesional, uses material from the 2000s, gives obnoxious replies (if he replies at all), and grades based on unclear criteria. He also made weekly attendance errors. Our class hated him, complained to the department head, and the average was in the 60s for a "bird course." Avoid him at all costs!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH PROF. STAMOS!!!!! He is a horrible professor and provides no guidance to his students. He is incredibly rude when you try to ask him questions, doesn't let you email him (if you do he just ignores your email) and does not care about his students. Save yourself and don't take this course with him!!!!!
If you are planning to take MODR1760 and expecting an A+ then try not to take it with Stamos. He's a very hard marker, but it's honestly not hard to get at least a B- in the course if you get a 90+ in participation (which is pretty easy since you only have to watch videos and complete homework) and do good on the fallacy test, which he marked light
does not answer emails, and when he does he responds in a very rude manner. I asked a simple question about an assignment because I was confused on the concept, he responded saying "its in the outline". I kindly responded saying I of course read the outline but was still confused on what something in the outline meant. He then never responded.
HORRIBLE! I HATE THIS PROF SM! DONT TAKE IT PLZ! the homework is so complicated for no reason. hates emails and even if u get a response, its him getting mad and yapping ab anything but answer ur question. so rude too... like im asking ab something the whole class is confused ab and this guy emails back whats not clear? read the outline!
Very unprofessional when it comes to responding to emails, he's always rude and hard to reach, especially after markings are released.
Every week he posts multiple videos that you must watch for participation marks and it doesn't help the fact that the course content is boring and he just sits in front of a camera talking. Homework almost every week. No exams just assignments which are graded very tough. Honestly, homework and watching videos was like 20% of your grade so not bad.
I hated this class thank god it's over. WEEKLY HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS FOR A GEN ED COURSE? The assignments were really time consuming too and he is not an easy grader. He gives unclear instructions to try and trick you, read everything carefully! You can find everything online so just double check if you did everything right before submitting.
