He makes it sound like the tests are going to be easy, but he tries to trick you
Boring lectures-too much info.- don't take if you can help it
He's a busy guy, but if you catch him, he's a big help.
Class is very hard. His lectures are hardly any help because he does not explain anything. And when you ask a question he answers it with a you don't have to worry about that .
Tests are very difficult and tricky. He tests on the most specific things that you will forget about the second the test is done. I doubt I've learned anything because he doesn't concentrate enough on the important things.
Very boring class hard to stay on task. Makes you think test are easy but are very difficult. Makes jokes but he is the only one that laughs at them.More worried about eating than satying after class to help you.
He is a really cool guy. His tests are really hard though.
Very hard! Very Boring!!! I don't feel that I have learned a thing in his class!
I was a 4.0 student until I took this class. The tests are a LOT harder than he makes them sound, and as far as grading the paper, he tells you to change something and then marks you down for changing it. Beware!
I was nervous because the class is a designed for Bio Majors/Nursing students, etc. I did great! His tests are right from the notes and he discusses the notes in class. If you read the book and put forth an honest effort you will succeed!!!
I learned quite a bit from the class. If you read the chapters and pay attention to lecture you will do well! Hint: His tests are directly from his lecture & notes! I'm definitely more proficient in Biology and a bit of Chemistry now.
He is a great professor! Tests are exactly from the notes, you just have to know what to study. GO TO HIS OFFICE!!! IT HELPS SO MUCH!! Also go to study sessions, and you'll succeed.
I don't think I learned anything in this class. It was awful, he's not a very good teacher.
VERY hard. Test questions were NOT straight from the notes! I studied my butt off, and it only got me a B- I feel like I've learned nothing from that class.
Tries really hard to be funny..he's not. You go to class, you take notes from a powerpoint pres. and you leave. Tests are pretty hard, but are mostly from the notes and he tries to give tips on what you NEED to know. Not a big fan of his.
He is a little corny, but very helpful. The tests are very specific details but if you study your notes you would do alot better. He gives all the notes online. The curve is awesome you could get a 50 all tests and still pass w/ a C.
Very good teacher. If you pay attention, you will do fine. I found it to be a tough class, but he is always willing to help. I liked his class and I liked him. I thought that he was funny too!!
Lectures are pretty boring. I got a B and I never read the book once, study your notes for the tests. All notes are available on blackboard and any minor detail is testable. Oh yeah, always laugh at his jokes, even when they aren't funny.
Excellent teacher. Clear. Tells you everything you need to know. Provides lecture outlines and grades fair. I think he's funny!
Tests are hard, but they come right from the notes. He's willing to help you if you need it, but just go to the lectures and study and you should be fine. I got an easy A.
HE is a very good teacher. I got a c+ in his class. I would have done a lot better if I would have picked up good study habits in the beginning. The tests are directly from the notes. I started to good at the end.
I really liked this class and I think he is a really good teacher.
Had him for several courses. One of my favorite profs. Did an excellent job explaining and clarifying.
Pretty easy. Hard tests. Must know notes word for word. Don't buy the book because you don't even open it. Tests are DIRECTLY from the notes.
Dr. Stanton tests straight from his notes he gives in class. If you cannot get a good grade by memorizing your notes, you may not be ready for college classes that are easy to get good grades in. Memorize Notes= Success
lets face it; upper-division bio classes need work. excellent teacher, very helpful, and everyone likes a little cheese with their lecture.
he is a good teacher and clarifies ideas well. He tests from the notes so if you take him be ready to memorize and it will be an easy semester.
he is ok
Tests are exactly from the notes, but you must memorize every single piece of info in your notes to do good on the tests which are only 40 ques. each, but worth 150 pts. Stanton is a good teacher though.
This class is interesting, in the fact that you have to memorize around 40 slides of info per test, the second time around was a little easier, and if you bank on a curve then you will have around a 0% adjustment most have a curve, but this one usually doesn't
His notes are very choppy. He tends to make things difficult when they shouldn't be. He is a good teacher though. But all his 40 question test are taken from the notes. STUDY THEM COMPLETELY! DOn't bother buying the book. It won't help you.
Lets see... if you like to memorise 35-40 slides for every test then this guy is for you. He's a good teacher, but he sure does know how to put people to sleep. He does have a tendancy to be boring and his corny jokes get old really quick.
He is a very good teacher, hard though. If you expect an A, then you have to be willing to spend the time to work for it. Tests are taken exactly from the notes, so study every word of those to do good on the tests. If you study all the 40 slides good then you will get a good grade, he grades on a curve too. Always willing to help if needed.
His class is insanely hard. YOu have to memorize all the notes pretty much word for word and it's EXTREMELY in depth. He'll help you out if you go to his office hours though.
If you are looking to learn something, this professor is worth taking.
This class is extremely straight-forward and if you canot get a decent grade (such as a B or B+) - it isn't the professors fault.. its your laziness. His tests come exactly from the notes, he curves, and is always willing to help with whatever you need. He even puts his powerpoints on blackboard. All you need to do is memorize the slides
All of the material comes from his PowerPoint slides, which he posts on Blackboard. The tests are harder than you would think, but there is always a MAJOR curve. Don't bother buying the book.
Okay, heres the deal on Stanton. Don't bother buying the book, or the study guide that the bookstore says he recommends, it was the biggest waste of $200. Notes are on blackboard, get them before class and fill in the blanks. Lecture is rather uselsss, and tests are HARD, he tries to trick you. Stay away if you don't plan on studying quite a bit!
I am usually an all A student but this class got me my first D. Stanton is a good teacher and the lectures are interesting, but he expects you to know everything from the notes for the exams and unless bio is your cup of tea you wont walk out of there with an A. Our class average was 67%. the worst part is that his exams ask trick questions.
Okay.. I have never gotten lower than an A in any science classes I have taken. This class was so difficult. I walked out of the class with a B+ only because of my photographic memory because he expects you to memorize the notes word for word. He is crazy. His tests are super hard because he writes trick questions. He is nice but very hard!
tests were tricky. studied hard and did lousy.I usually get A's and B's. this was a very frustrating class- i would not reccommend it to anyone.
Exams are the exact notes taken in class. If you study the notes you will pass with flying colors. With that being said, you have to go to class in order to take notes. Don't bother buying the book you'll never use it.
I had Dr. Stanton for Humen heridity. Great teacher, his test are based on his notes. Make sure you go to class cause he leaves important information out so you come to class to get it. He's funny in a dry sense of humor way. Very good but you need to study!!!
tests were easy, just copy his notes and take good notes so you understand them, his corny jokes get funnier as you get used to his personality, very helpful if you go to his office hours
Don't buy the book, you don't need it. His tests come exactly from him notes so as long as you study them (he likes the examples) then you will do fine.
Do not need the book. Definitely take this class if you are good at memorizing, his tests come straight from the power point. Very willing to answer anything and is quite intelligent.
Test are kind of hard so study a lot. Don't buy the book I only used it once or twice, definately not worth it. Overall a decent professor.
Really nice guy, pretty easy class. If you can learn from notes well you will do well in this class. He makes a lot of attempts at silly jokes and sometimes you get a good laugh. You definitely don't need the book but be sure to study from the notes because that's all he bases his exams off of.
do not take this class, his tests are VERY hard he never specifically tells you what is on the test although it is from your notes. Book is never used. i would not recommend him
He tries to be funny, sometimes is, mostly not. Tests are okay, you have to study to get good grades. Class is all powerpoint and i didn't open my book once.
Lectured the entire hour, used powerpoint notes. Bio isn't my strong point so I had a tough time in this class but I tried, even went to his office and asked for help and he wasn't the most understanding guy. He just said "looks like you're doing ok" even when I ended up with a C in the class. Not the best prof.
Lectures are boring, but you need to go in order to get a good grade. He does not tell you exactly what is on the tests but if you just study all your notes you will be fine.
Avoid unless your a genius at Biology
Dr. Stanton's class wasn't too bad. His notes are sometimes hard to understand when studying, but if you write down what he says about each part of the powerpoint then it's pretty easy. Not a bad prof.
TAKE THIS PROF. all you have o do is copy the power points every single question that is on the exam is from the notes and the are NO essay questions on his exams. If yo hate Bio take this guy. plus he gives you sports updates in the beginning of every class : )
You don't even need to go to class to write down what he says as long as you get the powerepoints. I memorized the notes and got an A. He's a pretty decent teacher with a few jokes of his own.
He is a really nice guy with quite a few funny jokes. DON'T buy textbook. You don't need it. His tests cover a lot of material and are difficult-but they are based completely off of notes taken in class. Memorize the notes & you will be fine. The notes can be REALLY hard to understand, so write in your own words.
Good at explainin what information is going to be on exams and the importance of some information versus not so important information.
Explains what will be on the exams very well. DO NOT BUY THE TEXT BOOK. I have not opened it once, and I asked him if I needed to look at the book to prepare for exams and he told me no. The exams are very straight forward. What is on the power point is going to be on the exam. As long as you understand the notes, you will pass the exams.
Stanton was a pretty cool guy. That being said, he isn't the easiest teacher in the world. If you're good at memorizing and don't mind devoting at least a few hours of studying before each exam, you should be alright. He curves the exams A LOT. Which is nice. I finished with an A, I wouldn't say it was easy but its do-able. DONT BUY THE BOOK
This class was almost impossible. I studied every night, made note cards, looked over notes and still failed every test. I asked him for help and he just made me feel stupid. I would not recommend taking him!
Stanton was a pretty solid professor. He does a good job of telling you what is going to be on the tests. As long as you print of the power points and memorize them, you shouldnt have a problem getting an A. Dont buy the book, you wont use it once.
I would not recommend taking this class! He's a very hard grader and unless you like science, not the biology you should take for general education
I thought this class was very difficult. I am not very good at just memorizing so the class was very difficult. If you can memorize the power points word for word, you should be okay. He was nice in office hours and said he would help me because if completely bombed one test; however, he didn't in the end and i was 3% away from a B-.
If you have the time and energy to memorize complete powerpoints, then you'll do fine. However he talks a LOT and it's easy to tune him out. I didn't have time to memorize his powerpoints so the tests were difficult. He does offer writing assignments and a little bit of extra credit though.
In order to do well, you will need to MEMORIZE all things on the power point! Lab and lecture content do not align, which makes the lectures difficult to grasp. Do NOT buy book!!!
He is a very nice man who knows his stuff, but his tests are very confusing. I studied a lot and my best grade was an 85. I regret buying the book, you NEVER EVER need it. The only thing I recommend is buying the access code because the extra credit Mastering Biology online boosts your grade 25 points. Class is do-able, pay attention.
Dr. Stanton is very much what you would expect out of a college prof. Book is unnecessary except for online Mastering Biology (just buy access to program if possible) and when he says everything comes from the powerpoints, he means it. Not someone to take if you want to truly understand the concepts, more of an overview kind of guy
His exams are very poorly worded so its hard to understand. You do not need the book but I definitely advise getting it, reading trough it and the figures really helped me understand the material. Tests are basically the powerpoint but you need to know every detail on it to pass. Took me 31 hours+ of studying to get a 90%+ on the exams.
He is really good at explaining the details, but will often forget to tell you the big picture. His notes are extreme short hand and can be difficult to decipher after class, so cross reference with the book and make your own notes. Tests are easy if you study well.
Dr. Stanton is really funny. Says his exams are hard but they really aren't. They are not easy but not a hard as he talks them up to be. Know the problems well. Pay close attention to detail. I enjoyed him. Offers extra credit but it's a pain.
Tests are over the little details of the power points, not the overall idea. Study those things like its the bible. His notes are really hard to understand. Lab reports are 10-15 pages long and marks you down 5% for every sentence he wants and you don't have. I had him read my report at office hours and said it was fine but then gave me a B-.
Tests are very tough and nothing like the lectures
The material is hard but he does a good job explaining it. He gives you the notes and you just have to fill in the blank. Tests are over everything on the notes. There are two writing assignments and he offers extra-credit. Lectures are kinda boring but he tries hard to make it interesting. Pretty good class overall.
Really liked the way he teaches. Straight-forward with the material needed on his PowerPoints. Print them before class and then just fill in the blanks and there is your exam questions. Willing to answer questions, you just have to ask. Offers extra credit and grades on a curve. Keeps you updated on your grades throughout the semester.
He is very cheesy but a great teacher everything in the lecture notes are on the test
Prof Stanton lectures are very hard to understand if you don't already know half of the material. The average grade in the entire class right now is a 54%. If you have nothing else to do besides memorize power points then its a good class for you. I wouldn't recommend it if you have ANY other classes. Prof Stanton does offer extra credit.
Worst class of my experience at SVSU, studied for hours and still failed tests, goes too indepth for a 111A class, nobody got a decent grade, refused to take any amount of responsibility for his teaching. Lectures the whole hour and 20 minutes nonstop nearly everything is on the exam would rate lower if possible. Take ANY other professor
Dr. Stanton is a very smart person. I have no doubt he really loves Biology. However, I do not believe he can teach biology to save his life. All he does is read off slides. He does offer some extra credit. Half of the class is failing and he refuses to take any responsibility. Would not recommend.
David stanton is awful! I would not reccomed taking a course from him! His tessts are confusing and hard. He is not willing to accept any responsibility for the average being at or below a 60% the entire semester.
Don't take this class if you're on a scholarship that requires a good GPA because this will screw it all up. Professor Stanton makes it clear he doesn't really care about his students, as he said he doesn't care if you show up to class because he gets paid anyways. Have to go to office hours to ask for help, very condescending
I took this class to challenge myself. I could have taken a Bio105 class instead. I wanted to learn more about Biology..I didn't learn a thing in this class!! His tests are hard and he makes the class feel dumb for failing. When I went to office hours he said "memorize all your notes and you will do fine". The notes are 7-8 pages for each lecture!!
I would avoid him if you can, his lecutres are dry and hard to follow. It is passable if you study!
He is a nice guy but he gets off topic often which makes it hard to focus on the important information. His Powerpoints are confusing by themselves so you have to supplement with your own notes which makes it difficult to keep pace with him. Also, the slides are just words which makes the topic more difficult for visual learners to understand.
David Stanton was a good professor, but be ready to study...A LOT. His exams are based solely on lectures so don't buy the textbook. He goes over 1 chapter per class period, and then gives an exam over 4 or 5 chapters. The exams pull information from ONLY the notes so don't study anything else. He is easy to talk to and his door is always open.
Very tough class and extremely hard tests. If you aren't a professional studier then you will most likely fail. SWITCH BIO PROFESSORS. Failed this bio class but retook it with a different professor and got an A... He doesn't make sense and is hard to follow. His lectures don't match his tests.
Dr. Stanton is one of the better bio professors I've had at SVSU. The class itself is difficult and some of his test questions can be confusing, but he's very good about giving partial credit when possible. He's also funny and really cares about the topics that he teaches, which helps to make his lectures more engaging.
I found that writing lectures word-for-word is basically a guaranteed passing grade on exams (which were usually not as bad as I feared, very straightforward and fair compared to some profs). If nothing else it contextualizes his ultra-vague powerpoint notes. No homework/surprises, just tests (w/ curving). Lab is painfully dull, flies everywhere.
His exams are 4 points for multiple choice and 3 points for true and false. The exams are only 40 questions long so you miss a few a ton of points are gone. Also if you suck a science like I do don't take this class you will leave class completely lost. I studied for this class like no other and I still did not get good grades on the exam.
exams are based on LECTURE MATERIAL. know your notes, you know the exam!! be prepared to study, as 5 ish chapters go into one exam, but his exams are just based on his notes. know his notes and you will do fine.
Dr. Stanton really knows a lot about biology and cares about the subject too. His exams are based around 5 chapters of the bio book (which you do NOT need) which are taught as Powerpoints with 7 or 8 slides each. All you have to do is memorize the examples and his material to pass-- you don't need to understand the material, just memorize it.
Don't buy textbook, didn't open once. Test come directly from powerpoint, you need to MEMORIZE the powerpoint in order to pass. Curves exams and offers extra credit. Go to office hours for help. Lab is easy and brings up grade.
Stanton does lots of dad jokes, which is alright. but the class was difficult and not being a bio major made it even worse for me. His lectures are confusing and you are graded mostly off of exams and quizzes. MasteringBiology is used for extra credit. I failed his class and re-took it with Amanda Ross and it was so much better!
Dr. Stanton is hilarious. His class is very lecture heavy and his tests reflect everything he says in lecture, so be sure to take good notes and study hard. He's not trying to "trick" you on his tests, just pay attention and take it seriously. I got As on every test, plus there's usually a 10 percent curve. Gives clear examples. I loved his class.
I loved Stanton's class. Personally, my roommate and I thought he was hilarious. If you study and make Quizlets for his tests, you'll do just fine. Plus, he adds a 10 percent curve to every test so that will boost your score. He's sort of goofy, but also really sweet and I would definitely take him again.
Dr. Stanton's a nice guy with a good sense of humor. His teaching style is questionable, he gives you about 14 pages worth of notes and essentially says to memorize it all for each exam. There is little outside work to help your grade so you better do good on the exams. If you're good at Biology you'll be fine, if not, be prepared to work hard.
Dr. Stanton is one of the best Bio professors at SVSU. He is really goofy, and his lectures can get boring, but overall this was an easy A. Memorize his PowerPoint slides, because all the test material comes from them. Don't buy the book. I'm not a very "sciency" person but my lowest test score was a 93. Put the work in, and you'll do fine.
Dr. Stanton is the funniest and nicest Bio professor at SVSU. His lectures can drag on, but he tries to make jokes when he can. He's very laid-back and approachable. Tests are super easy, just know his PowerPoint slides and you'll do fine. The final is not cumulative, so that's good! Make Quizlets to study the material. I'd take him again!
Dr. Stanton is a really weird guy. His class is awkward, but informative. It's also pretty difficult.
I had to take this class online due to COVID-19 and it was so hard online. Do NOT take this class online. Dr. Stanton is very nice and knows what he is talking about, however, for students who have no clue, it's hard. It's super difficult online, and his PowerPoint notes and lectures seem vague and never clear. He's really great, but not online
I took this class because I have a biology minor and it's required for the minor. What was really frustrating is I felt like he kept saying "you'll remember from another class" but no I do not remember from another class, because I didn't have to take that other class. Take biostats first, I don't have to for the minor and it made this class harder
Graded on 4 lecture exams/2 lab exams/ 2 lab reports. Lecture outlines are vague and don't make sense. Tests are right from the PowerPoint slides/assigned problems BUT he makes them difficult! (which of the following is false? questions are VERY hard) Class average before going online was a F and he still didn't curve. Also.. NEVER answers emails!
