Take him if you can!!! If you go to class and do the reading, the class is such an easy A. David is really nice and occasionally will let you turn in late work if he knows you. Tests are easy and he hands out the questions on it before you have to take it.
Cool guy... pretty friendly... LOTS OF READING... thats all the class is... if you dont like reading.. dont take phil 101... otherwise easy B and a workable doable A
Easy A if you show up and pay attention. Kind of math based, but it makes sense. No attendance policy. Good guy. Is easy if you keep up with class and come to class.
There's a lot of reading in this class, but David is very helpful and fun. I got an A on every test. Its easy to do if you try, he gives out study questions. Do them.
This class is almost TOO easy! The subject matter is usually pretty interesting for anybody other than Comp. Sci. majors, probly. He gives you the test questions before the test, and then answers them in class if you ask him about them. Easy A...good class. Can't go wrong.
His classes were some of my most involved. I enjoyed the material he taught, and they way he taught it, and it seems to be thre same regardless of the course he teaches. Do the readings, and read over the sample questions you get for the tests and you'll do fine in the course.

GREEEAAATTT TEACHER!!! Even though the reading is intense--very intense, you will take so much out of his class. He will make you think about life. Who am I? Is there a God? Am I naturally good/evil? What is the meaning of life? I absolutely loved his class. Take him even if you are a math based major. You'll gain so much!
Great teacher, asks for your opinion in class. He has you write a 1 page journal on the reading for every class. You need to keep up with the homework and know the answers to the study questions to make an A. He is very understanding & willing to work with you.
good teacher, easy to prepare for tests bc he gives essay questions.
great teacher! very enjoyable and VERY helpful. class mainly consists of discussions about the readings. must write a 1 pg journal on each reading for attendance/participation. easy easy easy. great guy.
Great class! So easy and very interesting. Best teacher that I've had at Clemson. One-page double spaced journal entry due each class reflecting on the reading due. You can just ramble for a page and he'll give you credit. Gives you the essay questions beforehand for each test. Final isn't cumulative. Take this class even if you don't need it!
Great teacher -- knows his stuff and is an excellent speaker. LOTS of reading , so make sure you take notes and ask him questions if you're confused -- if you get behind, it's pretty hard to catch up. He's a very sweet man -- not intimidating whatsoever! If you need an elective and are willing to put the time into it -- definitely take this course!
This class was interesting and will be only as hard as you make it. It required a lot of reading at times. Don't get behind-it will be hard to catch up! Go to class-he explains the readings, and test questions come from discussions in class. Don't miss class or you'll be lost. He is there for help. Try to take notes but his writing is hard to read.
Stegall is a really interesting professor, and you can learn a lot, but you really have to be self-motivated. He doesn't take attendence, and we only took four exams (that was our entire grade), so if you don't come to class, you're kind of screwed. He pretty much always starts a class the same way. "Okey, dokey, good to have you here today, it's a
If you like philosophy, take this class. Absolutely one of the best classes I've ever had. Very interesting and David is the man. Coolest dude, never boring, great sense of humor. Can't go wrong! I'm by no means a "hard worker" I am the biggest slack. If you just say something intelligent during class WHEN you go, you're an A student.
David is the most amazing professor in the whole world. He's easy going and he reminds me of santa clause!!! He's awesome!
Mr. Stegall (David) is one of the best teachers/professors that I have ever encountered. I am not a philosophy major but after taking 102 I want to take every class that he teaches!!!!
lectures are very interesting and fun to listen to. you can get into a lot of good discussions. he's a great teacher. only problem is that he isn't 100% clear on the tests they're still not too bad though. great class definitely recommend.
Absolutely the best professor I have EVER had. David makes everything so understandable and extremely enjoyable. I would reccommend to any Clemson that he/she take David's class, even if outside the major. He is just that good. Most thought provoking class I have ever had. A good amount of work, but it reaps rewards.
David is extremely good to get along with and is always willing to explain something again. the class can be a little abstract at times, but he explains it very well. there is a fair amount of reading, but i hardly read it and i still do well on tests. the important thing is actually coming to class. David is just a GREAT teacher!
Pretty good professor, he explained things well and his lectures were interesting. If you paid attention in class and took good notes, you should be able to make an A easily. The tests had a free response/essay format to them.
I have taken David 5 times now and for good reason! Clemson is so lucky to have him as a professor. You will learn a ton without working too hard and be stunned by what an outstanding professor he is. You don't really have to read if you go to class and take notes. He can make the most complex subject understandable to anyone. Awesome! Awesome!
Outstanding prof. I was a little unsure about taking a logic course but am now entirely glad I did. Lectures are insightful and interesting. Explains everything so well. Go to class and take good notes and you will succeed. Really nice guy whose class you feel is actually worth attending. So good I am taking another of his classes just for fun!
One of the best teachers I've had. Definitely take a class of his if you can. He's easy to talk to, gives extremely interesting lectures, and is very helpful!
Such an amazing teacher! I have taken him twice and plan to take another class if I have time. Not an easy A if you don't go to class.. but if you go to class and do the journals the tests will be do-able. definitely definitely take his class!
Without a doubt, the best professor I've ever had. Logic was pretty easy for me, but he has limitless patience with those who have difficulty with the material. Really interesting class discussions.
Stegall's the man. He's got his own sense of humor going on. funny guy. And he's got a sincere passion for philosophy. makes hard stuff easy to understand. goes over the readings every day that was for homework. journals on reading every day 10%. 3 essay styled exams 30% each.
Great professor! Explains material clearly, responds to emails quickly. Must study for tests, but if you attend class and take good notes you'll do fine.
One of the coolest teachers at Clemson. Really nice and conveys the subject matter very clearly. Tests are a little long and make sure you take notes, but if you take notes and study, you'll do fine. He is always willing to help you out if you go to his office hours and is one of my favorite professors I've had at Clemson. I would take him again.
Great Guy, Easy to get along with. Just make sure you take notes and study.
My favorite teacher/class! Dr. Stegall is extremely helpful, interesting, and clear. Come to class and take good notes, and it's pretty easy to do well on the tests. Definitely take this class!
Knows his stuff! I do not like Philosophy, but he made it somewhat interesting. Make sure you bring your book to class because he makes you read from it, and take good notes!
One of the best professors at Clemson, hands down. Extremely helpful teacher and very nice! Make sure and bring all of your readings to class because you have to read aloud from them, and as long as you go to class he'll tell you everything that will be on the tests. Very easy as long as you attend class.
Dr. Stegall is definately one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are clear, succinct, fun, and engaging. He is one great guy, and I would recommend him to anyone and everyone!
He is the man. Nicest guy in the world and basically tells you what the test questions are.
Dr. Stegall is the man! Before I had him I kind of dreaded philosophy. He makes the class interesting and his study guides for the tests are almost identical to the tests. He brings a lot of dry humor most classes which had me laughing hysterically. Definitely take Dr. Stegall he is one of the best professors that I've had in college!
Dr. Stegall is one of the best professors I have ever had. Not only is he extremely helpful, but he is hysterical and loves what he does. If I was in his major, I would take as many classes with him as I could. Take his lectures seriously and you won't regret it. After I leave his class I just feel ready to philosophize.
Stegall is the best teacher i have had at clemson. he's the man. hands down.
Best professor in the Philosophy/Religion department. He makes the material fun and interesting. Some of the material is difficult to understand, but he makes the driest material simple and interesting. He is the nicest teacher, and makes himself available for his students. If you're taking Philosophy, do everything you can to get Dr.Stegall.
Dr. Stegall is a superb professor! His lectures are really entertaining and he basically tells you what is going to be on the test. However, make sure to read the assignments and go to class (you should be doing that anyways) and you will get an A!
He is a superb guy, loved going, to his class, he is sweet and will definietly make you laugh. Be prepared to listen about his evil old professor. If you want to pass read the material he assigns a couple times to understand it. TAKE THE CLASS
I love this man. He is great and I have really enjoyed talking to him. Hopefully I'll get to stay in contact with this spectacular individual. Needless to say, I would definitely recommend this class and Stegall as a professor
Dr. Stegall is an amazing professor! You NEED to take his class. There is a lot of reading but the material is always interesting and he is probably unmatched at Clemson in regards to his level of clarity. You will think about things that you didn't even think you could think about and it will help you be a better person. Take him!!
Probably one of the best professors i've had thus far at Clemson. Definitely knows what he's teaching and the tests are tough but since Philosophy is really subjective you will almost always get an A or a B Stegall helps out alot with the readings by sending out really helpful emails. If you have to take a non-lit humanities class you MUST take him
Had to take this class as a Gen. Ed. but I am so glad I did. Stegall is a very nice guy who makes fun of himself frequently and does a wonderful job of explaining the material. While the readings can be tedious and confusing, his lectures clear everything up and his study guides are very good indicators of the questions on the test. MUST TAKE
A very knowledgeable professor. It was an online class but he was very clear in what he wanted to teach. Explains concepts very well. Liked the class.
Seriously the best teacher I have ever had in any subject. If you hate thinking, he will make you like it.
Great teacher. I personally don't agree with all of his ideas, but he is ok with that. If you take notes and review the study guide somewhat, he will get A's on his tests. Has some humor, and is always extremely kind. "Hey critters, thanks for coming today!" Get him if you want to take philosophy!
Dr. Stegall is my favorite professor at Clemson. While he may joke otherwise, he really loves his students and is passionate about the classes he teaches. By far the best professor I know, TAKE HIS CLASS if you want to enjoy your time in Philosophy!
Doctor Stegall is by far my favorite professor on Clemson's campus due to his understanding and genuinely thoughtful nature. He hates you all, remember that, but that doesn't cloud his judgement. In fact, Doctor Stegall just wants everyone to think. Grades are earned but not in a stressful way. He is a must take at Clemson University for any major.
Dr. Stegall is the best professor I have had at Clemson, and I don't expect that to change. I have taken him for 2 classes and will be taking him for more. If you can, take his class!
Professor Stegall is literally one of the best guys out there. He's one of those people that you just want to hang out with outside of class too. While some of his words are sardonic, he always has the nicest of intentions. I wish everyone could take a class with him..I know I plan to take as many as I can.
Dr. Stegall is interesting in funny, but in a darker way. If you get offended easily, you may want to try a different professor. That being said, he is great and extremely helpful! He sends out study guides for the exams and they pretty much follow them exactly.
Awesome, just awesome. He's a great, smart, funny guy. Definitely take if you can just to interact with him.
He is a great professor. knew all the students names by the second day. Cares about the success of every student. Office hours are very helpful. Take notes because its a lot of material but not hard. very interesting guy don't let him offend you, be open to his lectures.
Dr. Stegall is one of the most genuine professor's I have ever had! He always refers to the class as "critters" or "varmints" and always makes jokes about each student (all in good fun). I would definitely recommend him to anyone taking a philosophy class!
Awesome teacher, a really short journal every day but I barely even consider it work, and basically no homework other than reading, which you can get away with not doing, but if you actually read you should get an A+ easy, and it's actually pretty interesting too.
Dr. Stegall is easily my favorite teacher of all time. I had him for my Metaphysics course. As a person, he is extremely interesting and fun to talk to. He gave us take home essay tests for our grades, and that was all. The class required aboout 1-2 hours of reading per class, but the material is extremely interesting and worth it. Would take again
Great teacher. Lost my books half way through the year and he was willing to work with me. Definitely take him for metaphysics
David is AWESOME! Please do yourself a favor and take him for a course. I had Metaphysics and loved every class. You are required to type up a short journal entry to hand in each day, but the material is fascinating, and he delivers lectures hilariously and really gets the class involved. Made a lot of good connections this semester. Easy tests.
I've had Dr. Stegall for Metaphysics and Intro to Logic. He is a superb teacher and always finds a way to make even the dullest material entertaining. I would take him again for more classes if I could. His test are fairly easy. Just keep up with the work and you can easily pull an A.
Stegall is great! He is extremely caring and overall a great guy. He assigns work for every class, so prepare to read a lot for him. He also picks on people in class to comment on the reading so beware of that. I would take him again! Awesome fellow
Dr. Stegall has definitely been one of my favorite professors yet! I took this course as a required elective, and I would take it again! No outside homework besides occasional readings, and journals for attendance in class but I don't even think he does anything with that. Super fun and interesting class for ANY major that needs to take a non lit
Best professor I've ever had at any school. Extremely unique individual. He is someone you will remember for the rest of your life. Knows everything there is to know about philosophy. Super dark sense of humor, which is in complete contrast with his Santa Clause like looks. Take him no matter what - life changingly good.
Professor Stegall taught by discussion mainly. You are asked to read various texts throughout the semester versus one textbook. But I honestly didn't read anything, I just caught up in the class discussions. The only grades were based off of 3 tests composed of free response questions. The tests took a while to complete but he doesn't grade hard.
He is a great professor who knows his information and loves to teach it. He doesn't have any power points or notes so I strongly recommend taking notes of EVERYTHING that is said during the lecture. Also, fill out his study guides and memorize them because that is basically the test (got high A's on all of mine). He calls on everyone in class.
One of the best teachers I have had at Clemson. Dr. Stegall knows a lot of philosophy literature and always has a relevant quote ready. He cares about his students and makes sure to memorize names. He will call on students to read or to share their thoughts on a topic. The tests are take-home, free response. Would definitely recommend!
Super awesome. Very accommodating, loves hearing your thoughts (and challenging them!) and has an amazing (but very dark) sense of humor. His metaphysics course requires a lot of reading and one paragraph on that reading per class, but it really helps to create an awesome learning environment. Also he calls us varmits. 10/10 would recommend.
He is the best professor I have had at Clemson and he is literally amazing. Dark sense of humor which I find hilarious and makes the class very enjoyable because there is never a dull moment. One of the only classes I look forward to going to on a regular basis. Content can be difficult at times but if youre actively engaging in class, it's not bad
Dr. Stegall has been one of the best professors I have had while at Clemson. He makes the class both fairly easy with study guides for each test and interesting and enjoyable with the discussion. Overall, if you are needing an easy gen-ed that you will also enjoy, PHIL 1010 with Dr. Stegall is a perfect choice.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It was a very hard Gen Ed and I was confused the entire semester. Nothing we talked about in class was actually on the test. Every time I walked into the classroom I regretted ever signing up for his class. Please save yourself from unnecessary confusion.
Dr. Stegall was my favorite professor at Clemson. He's super entertaining, and makes the class extremely interesting. He calls his students "varmints" and has a really funny type of dark humor. His exams are the study guides which he gives out in advance, and just picks about half of the question for the exam. If you put the work in you'll love it.
Hour or two of reading before every class. Do the study guide, it is his test. An essay is due the day of the test, but he's an easy grader. The reading is a must if you want to succeed, but pay attention in the lecture and he gives the answers to the study guide. Beware, calls you a critter or varmint.
So I can understand why he is rated highly, because he is a very nice guy. But a couple things to anticipate going in: Very heavy reading. Make sure you understand it the way he wants you to interpret it. When people on here say test is based off of study guide, you have to fill it out and it can be multiple pages long. Tests can be a time crunch.
Mr. Stegall was such a nice professor and really made my experience with philosophy so much more interesting and made my life so much better. He made me think deeper and really see what the world is all about and how this place works. You need to read and take notes in class because he talks a lot about stuff. His tests are the study guide
I love David, he's an awesome professor and his class is really interesting. Only thing is there is A LOT of reading. Make sure to do the test study guides he emails out because they are quite literally the test questions. Other than that, he is a super easy grader - especially on take home essays.
He is a great professor for an entry level course. Presented material in a way that made sense for all, and was open to everyone's opinions in discussion. Tests were the only grades, but he sent out a study guide that was very helpful. Class participation was important, and discussions are very helpful for preparing for the tests.
Such a nice guy and he's really passionate about philosophy! Course was intimidating at first (I tried to drop), but I'm so glad I stuck it out. Lots of confusing readings, but he makes everything super clear during class discussions. Study guides before every test with ALL OF THE EXACT TEST QUESTIONS (do these and you will get an A).
Easy gen ed credit if you show up to class and put in a good amount of effort by reading and being attentive in class. There were many times where I was confused but he provides study guides for tests that eliminate a lot of the information that wasn't included on the 5 tests given throughout the semester. Would take again.
Dr. Stegall's class is pretty easy. He assigns daily assignments by email that count towards participation. They usually consist of reading some material and then answering a few questions. He makes the class enjoyable with his humor and is always respectful of student's thoughts. Exams are all short answer, but study guides mimic the test.
Dr. Stegal is one of my favorite professors. His lectures are fun and go by quickly. He seems to truly care about you understanding the material. You will be expected to speak in class. If you read assigned readings and engage this class will be fun and easy. Don't show up to class if you didn't read
Whole semester grade is based off only 4 tests, so make sure you do good on them. I put a lot into the tests but he subtracts points if answers don't go well with his philosophy, though this is philosophy class meaning no philosophy is wrong with enough backup. He really tries to imply his philosophy and say his right. Just down take the class
Nice guy but not rare for him to assign over 100 pages to read in a day. This is asinine for a 1000 level course. You have a journal to do everyday that he says is not for credit but if you miss 3 you suffer losing a whole letter grade. His tests are take home but don't expect to spend under 5 hours on them. Don't take his class.
For a 1000 level class there is an extremely high expectation to do an absurd amount of work. You are expected to do journals three times a week. The exams take so, so long. You are going to at least spend 5 hours doing them. It's asynchronous, so I had to teach myself all these philosophical concepts.
Dr. Stegall is so wholesome and his lectures are so interesting. At times the readings can be a little heavy, but they're usually interesting. He assigns journals every MWF that count as attendance, some are more difficult than others. His tests can be a little lengthy but they're nothing crazy. I really enjoyed his class and would recommend it.
virtual class, prof would send out journal prompts due 3 days a week for credit (not graded). the only grades were from the 4 tests they definitely require you to do reading and understand material and take good amount of time to complete but overall enjoyed the class.
WAY too much work for a 1000 level class. You have a ton of reading 3 times a week and you can't work ahead so the only option is to fall behind. You get assigned the reading/ assignment thats due on Wednesday after class on Monday so there's less than a 2-day turnaround. The exams are EXHAUSTING. The guy is cool but I started to resent him.
Super super nice guy. ALL discussion based and everyone has to talk at least once, but its really not that bad to speak in his class. Homework is often boring, but is very easy and only for completion. Very easy grader, so even though you are only graded on 4 exams for the whole semester, he grades so easy as long as you do it you'll be fine.
Dude never actually taught us anything, just sent us stuff to read and had us teach ourselves. Very misogynistic and would not let students actually discuss the topics we were supposed to discuss. I thought I would love this course, but was disappointed from day one. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
A nice person, difficult class. Lots of homework and reading. Can't work ahead on assignments. You are only graded on 4 tests, and it is pretty hard to get an A on the tests. All of class is discussion based, so do not take this professor unless you are okay with being randomly called on. Required 7 text books, most available online or at Cooper.
While professor Stegall is a rather easy grader on the exams, the readings that are due before every class are not as "short" as he states. One usually takes around 45 minutes to do. In class the only thing you will do is listen to how other people answered the journal, and you will be called on to share your response to the journal.
He is super sweet and really cares about his students, but the class is so boring and is so much work. You have a journal assignment due at the start of every class based on really long readings. He requires you to buy his book as one of his readings. His tests are super long, but he is a relatively easy grader.
Dr. Stegall is a really nice guy however there is a lot of work for this class. The journals required for attendance have you do several things that can take a while. His tests also require a lot of time in order to get a good score. The only good thing is that he has provided the answers somewhere, you just have to find them. Watch his zooms!
class is pretty easy, readings every day sometimes they can take a long time but they're not too bad. all tests are open book, the 4 tests make up the whole grade.
The class itself is interesting, and David is a super nice guy, but there is so much homework. The readings are super long and there is a journal due based on the readings and videos at the beginning of every class. Homework will take you at least 2 hours every night, and don't bothering showing up if you didn't do the journal
You are graded on 4 Exams that have ten questions. He is a nice guy but assigns many readings for your journals (which aren't even graded.) I took this class as a Gen Ed, which took up so much time. He also sends the readings over email, which blew up my inbox. This made his class disorganized.
David Stegall is a very fair and engaging professor. He notices participation and is very passionate about philosophy. This makes his class interesting and quick to sit through. His tests are easy because he gives the answer either in class, zoom videos, or directly in the readings themself.
I had more homework in this class than any other class I've ever taken and it was unclear if he even read the journal assignments. He is an engaging professor, but the amount of work he gives makes it seem like busy work. In addition, his tests took me hours on hours.
The amount of homework is ridiculous and takes up my entire life, and it does nothing to help your grade; only harms you if you do not do it. His tests take hours upon hours. In-class engagement is non-negotiable, so be prepared to be called on at random. Stay away PLEASE!
Hours of reading hw every night. The homework doesn't even count for a grade, but you need to read it in order to complete the 4 tests, each worth 25% of your grade. The tests alone take 3+ hours to complete. Don't recommend
Stegall is such a nice guy; he looks and acts like Santa. His class is not hard, just a lot of reading. The four tests are the only grades in the class, but they are straight-forward and simple, just take a lot of time to complete.
He gives a TON of reading and gives 3 assignments a week that are super time consuming but not even graded, but if you dont do them your grade will suffer, cold calls in every lecture, grade is based on 4 tests that took hours upon hours. Definitely would not recommend for a gen ed.
He's such a nice guy but I was scoring low on tests. The tests take hours upon hours to complete, which is not fun. There's tons of homework each night thats not even graded, but if you don't complete it, it negatively impacts your grade. If you're genuinely interested in philosophy, take this, but I would not take for Gen Ed.
David is a very nice person (looks like Santa), but he gives a LOT of homework. The homework is not graded, but if you don't do it, you'll be very lost in class. He only gives 4 tests which are the only things you'll get graded on. Each test takes HOURS to complete (took me about 4-5 hours). I would not recommend his class for a gen ed course.
Makes you read and buy several books like 10 books. Homework due before class every week and if you do not do it you it counts against your attendance. Four exams which are super hard and each take multiple hours to complete. Do not take this class if he is teaching.
Great guy who loves the stuff he teaches. Very work-heavy for a 1000-level class, though. Tests will genuinely take you 4-6 hours, though, in my experience, he is not a particularly tough grader. Not the easiest class ever though not hopeless if you take him.
You will have a lot of homework however it is not graded. Though it is reading heavy, the readings are actually interesting. Definitely one of my favorite courses I've taken. David is a really nice guy who genuinely cares for his students. Exams aren't graded too harshly. If you put in the work you'll do just fine.
The class can be a lot of work, with plenty of readings and journal assignments. However, the professor is engaging and helps break down the material. unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep. Overall, it's a challenging but worthwhile course.
He really is a nice guy, but he assigns an insane amount of busy work for a simple gen ed class. You are expected to read tons of novels/readings and submit 3 journal assignments a week, which each have multiple questions. Overall, you have to put in way too much effort just to get an A in the class. If you have a hard major, AVOID THIS CLASS
David was the best professor I've had so far at Clemson. Philosophy was a random gen ed for me but he made it quite interesting. Class is essentially a simple conversation about the reading that day, and all tests are take home and simple if you follow the rubric, the answers are all within the readings (which are mostly excerpt PDF's he sends out)
He's a fine teacher-- the class is only graded on the 4 take home exams. He emails you a prompt for each journal response. Not incredibly time consuming. You need to buy like 6 different books and that sucks. The class is not for people that need a gen ed credit because it's boring if you didn't like philosophy to begin with.
Is a very interesting and fair professor. He always starts a conversation and does his best to remember names from each class. He also does a good job in starting the discussion each day, and respects what each student has to say. Is not a particularly easy gen ed, but it is definitely worth it in my experience
I took Professor Stegall's PHIL-3050 course because I was interested in Existentialism and he did not dissapoint. He gave the class interesting readings to discuss in person and gave very good and insightful talks. Only the tests (3 tests and 1 final) were graded, each with a weight of 25% and were fairly easy.
David Stegall is a nice and knowledgeable professor, but the workload is WAY TOO MUCH for a gen ed. You must email him a journal entry before each class (3x a week). Class is discussion based on the readings and prompts. Several textbooks are assigned, though most are free online (Annas Archive Website). Only his own book needed purchasing.
Professor Stegall is an amazing human being, and a great teacher. I took this as a gen ed thinking it would be an easy A, but there is way too much work for a gen ed, and he isn't the easiest grader. If you are interested in philosophy then definitely take this class, but do NOT take him if you are looking for an easy A in a gen ed class.
David is wonderful. It is obvious to anyone that he is extremely well-versed in Philosophy. The workload is pretty heavy. Although, he is always willing to answer any questions you may have, in class during discussion, or outside of class. He is always fully present during class discussions and is interested in what his students have to say.
Lots of reading for this class but all of it is explained and you have the chance to discuss anything from the material that you so choose through class participation. Only assignments are "journal" entries before class on the readings and exams. Exams are take home and are not graded harshly. Participation is mandatory and the prof will cold call.
This class has four very difficult exams graded harshly and subjectively. Journals are required before every class, and missing more than three hurts your grade; 13+ means automatic failure. Attendance also impacts grades if you miss >3. The course is mostly self-study and do not take this as a gen edu. Only take it if you're a pro in philosophy.
Dr. Stegall is a very genuine and sweet man. The reading, however, is dense and can be challenging to understand. Journals are due before class, and those can eat up a significant amount of time. Other reviews are not kidding, the exams take hours. Be diligent in your work and make an effort to make creative contributions and you will be fine.
