Hard grader, no equation sheet. Spends one class period doing one problem, and expects you to do 4 of those types of problems in the same amount of time for the test. Does curve tests, but it's based on performance of all his Thermo students. Homework is online,& takes a long time, so definitely start early. Has weekly chapter summariesbusy work
Passing Stooksbury's class is not difficult at all, but getting a B or higher will definitely require a lot of work. First few hw assignments are VERY LONG but become better. Lectures are monotoneboring and are spent deriving formulas that don't help much with exams. Study guides are given before each exam and he uses 1-2 problems from each
On top of the material not easy, Stooks is just hard. Lectures are pointless because he literally reads straight out of the book for the entire class. Sometimes he works examples which are the only days worth attending. Tests are had, and he gives minimal to no partial credit. the only good thing is the final can replace bad test grades.
First professor I've rated. Had to go out of my way to point out what a horrible professor he is. Derives pointless formulas during lecture and doesn't do example problems so test questions are usually a surprise since they don't resemble homework ones. Partial credit? Sure, he'll give you 5 out of 30 points. Avoid at all costs.
He's not as bad as some people say, but he is difficult. His tests tend to be 75% straightforward, 25% going out of his way to trick you, but that's reasonable. The material isn't very difficult, but it does take some time studying. Do as many problems in the back of the chapters as possible, beginning questions straight through review.
Stooksbury's difficulty comes from his teaching methods. He relies heavily on the book. So much so that I stopped going to class expect for the test dates. I bombed every test, but studied really hard for the final and got a B+ in the class. He replaces all bad test grades with the final exam grade if it's higher. Don't recommend.
By no means an easy class. However, if you do the reading and properly work the hw problems you will learn a lot. I took the class a while ago and have to admit it served me well as a foundation. If you really want to learn something and are willing to work this is a good class.
I don't think he's as terrible as some people say he is, but lectures are pretty pointless. Read the textbook and do ALL the homework, make sure you understand it thoroughly, and you'll be fine. His test questions are taken directly from the textbook.
Tests were so hard because he does not lecture well over problems and yet the tests are majority problems. Lots of homework, would not recommend
Stooks is not as bad as people make him out to be. He assigns a lot of homework, but this also helps you do better on the test. He replaces all test with the final of your grade is better. He is extremely helpful if you ask for help. He will be the first to tell you not many people get A's. If you're not ready to work hard then choose otherwise.
Honestly a pretty horrible teacher all around. Reads verbatim from the book so class is pointless. Very randomly does practice problems in class, at least one of which will end up on the test. Avoid if you can, if you can't... good luck to you.
Dr. Stooksbury is a good teacher. If you want to get an A in his class, you're going to have to work very hard. If you show up to class, work hard, and do your homework you can get a A.
Stooksbury is the most difficult teacher I've had since I got to college. His "lectures" are literally just hour long sessions of him reading verbatim from the book and deriving useless equations on the board. His tests have no formula sheets and while he does curve, he is not generous with partial credit. I would absolutely not recommend him.
Avoid at all costs. Average of 8 hours of HW a week. No equation sheet for tests. No powerpoint/anything accessible online. Attendance not mandatory, but some test questions are "his definition" of concepts. Final is no partial credit. Amount of HW so much and tests are so condensed, that studying is like looking for needles in a haystack.
He doesnt teach with the same rigor that he tests you with. He doesnt teach Thermo in class, he rambles about it. The way he structures the class is what makes it impossible, not the material. If you are going to make the course as hard as it possibly can be (no equation sheets on tests, final is no partial credit) then put the effort in to teach
I've never taken a class before this where I felt attending the class has hurt my understanding of a subject. He couldn't lecture in a less helpful way. Lots of homework and weekly essays about a very unnecessary book. He makes you memorize formulas except on the final (and the formula sheet was 25+ pages for the final). Do not take his class.
The actual worst professor I have ever taken at the University if Georgia. Stooks does not teach at all. He whips out the textbook at the beginning of class and just reads it. You could skip every day of class and read the textbook and you wont miss anything. Tests are impossibly hard and he gives to partial credit. Avoid at all costs.
I really shouldn't have taken him, this was a huge mistake. The man can't teach lectures properly in a classroom setting and relies too heavily on difficult tests that have insatiable grading criteria.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Tests are nearly impossible, require random tricks that he doesn't teach and no formulas given. Curves heavily due to entire class bombing tests, final counts 40% and homework is impossible without chegg.
I got an A in thermo with stooks and you can too. Dont listen to people that say you never have to go to class. Go to class!!! Do every one of the in chapter problems. He takes his test and final exam questions straight from the textbook and doesnt even change any numbers. Dont listen to the rumors, stooks isnt all bad I promise.
It's not that he can't teach, it's just that your grade depends on your test grades. He gives almost zero partial credit. You can have everything right except for one small thing, and he will give you 0 points on a 30+ point problem. The final is very difficult and can tank your grade. Avoid this professor at all costs.
its basically self taught you need to learn a programming language he's so darn condescending and he makes you read a book side note... the book is good if you like nonfiction, but that's the only plus
Everyone fails EVERY test. Not kidding. Do not take whatever you do. You will drop.
omg this guy really doesn't teach well. No one follows along and his exams are impossible to pass. They're not hard. Its just that he wants us to use a very specific way of writing our answers. If we don't, we won't get any PARTIAL credit or a LOT of points deducted. You can write a full page of answers worth 20 pts but you'll only get 4 pts....
He's actually rude 1 on 1. In class, he seems friendly. 100 question HW and 5 class problems given a week before exams. He lectures from the textbook verbatim! Doesn't teach well. No PARTIAL credit given on EXAM! Writes tiny on board and refuses to write larger when asked. Final exam replaces ALL EXAMS if you scored higher on it.
Seems very fishy that theres multiple 5 star ratings in a row, without even giving real perspective on this class. Heres the truth: You WILL struggle. Homework takes hours and hours to do, there is NOTHING he puts on elc, and he seriously gives little to no partial credit. If you make the mistake of taking Stooks, prepare for an awful semester!
Avoid at all cost! If you don't want to retake a class, avoid this guy. He lectures by reading off the textbook word for word. Doesn't work through practice problems, just talks about useless information occasionally. His exams are unnecessarily difficult to the point where partial credit is practically a joke. There's no structure to the class.
Only take Stooks if you genuinely have no other option. Doesn't really teach in class. He reads directly from the textbook and scribbles equations on the board. He posts and makes homework due all in the week of the test which gives you NO time to finish the homework or prepare for the test. Tests are also impossibly hard with almost no partial.
I've been reading through the textbook and learned the ways the book teaches. When applied to his exam I dont get any points. He is very nitpicky and very specific of how he wants your answers to be. If one slight detail is incorrect the rest of your answer is counted as wrong even though your process may be correct. he's there to punish you
Terrible teacher...
I normally don't rate profs, but he's simply a bad teacher -- not a bad person. He can't describe things well and he transitions from lecturing to deriving equations out of nowhere for no reason. He expects us to see the board when he writes an inch in height. Just have a good look at your GPA now because it will drop if you take him. NOT WORTH IT!
50+ Connect hw questions. 4-6 in class example problems and 5 exams. Final exam replaces all exams if it's higher than the others. Can't teach right. No one knows what he wants us to write for our answers on tests. Almost no partial (not extra) credit given on tests. Illegible writing b/c it is TOO SMALL. Doesn't know when to stop writing equations
WORST SEMESTER EVER! No sympathy from him. Very patronizing in person. Doesn't communicate his lectures well. Writes too small. HARSH grader. High expectation from us on tests after given a bunch of HW a few nights before test. Doesn't release study guides to class unless you ask for it. Final replace all exams. Very boring. Textbook is your friend
Stooksbury is ridiculous, to put it simply. Expects you to memorize tons of (some) complex formulas. Harsh grading and reads straight from the book to teach. Would not recommend unless you have NO other options. A simple probability class was more difficult than electronics two. We had a 2 pg essay each week. Also, 100+ question hw assignments
Not a fan of rating teachers but Stooks bad enough for me to rate. He doesn't preform analogies or any form of techniques to help students understand concepts. He goes on by writing formulas and equations on the board that doesn't appear to go along with what he's supposedly teaching. He's nice and all but taking him is a WASTE of your time...
Stooksbury is tough, but he seems to really enjoy being with students. You have to work as hard as you can just to pass the course, so do not take it with other difficult classes, but he is not as bad as some of the other reviews depict him. Just make sure you turn everything in, and begin studying well in advance of exams.
He does assign quite a bit of homework, but you can't procrastinate on doing it. To succeed in his class, you have to read and work problems every day so that you are prepared for his finals. Take notes on how he wants problems done and you shouldn't have a problem. If you are prepared and go to office hours, this class really isn't that bad.
This professor acts as if he has a quota of failed students he must meet. If you have a full courseload, or, god forbid, a job; you will not have time for one of his classes. 300+ hw questions every week which he excuses by dividing them into sub groups. exams are only 12 questions and no partial credit. studying is like panning for gold.
Unpopular opinion but I really don't mind his class! I can't speak for thermo but his stat class really isn't that bad. I think his tests are very fair. He doesn't give a lot of partial credit but there's a fat curve, at least in my experience. I think he's really nice too. It's true about the homework, that is a pain. He's good at explaining stuff
Lectures are poorly structured and exams feel impossible. The only way to pass is spend 16-20 hours a week on studying the material just to get a c on the exam. class averages are so low a 10 to 25 point curve is added and people still fail.
Stooksbury is not as bad as the reviews make him seem. I was skeptical coming into the first day of class because of the reviews, but he was not that bad. There is a lot of homework everyweek. 2-page essays due everyweek for most of the semester aswell. Just learn to manage your time with all the homework. tests arent too hard final was the hardest
Stooks really isn't as bad as everyone else says. He gives a TON of homework which sucks, but most of the time his exams have questions straight from the homework and/or textbook. All of his exams have massive curves, and his final exam replaces all exam scores lower than it. Not too bad. Do the work, and you'll DEFINITELY pass.
Stooks is a very hard teacher who expects a lot from his students in order to do well in the class. For stat, there was a homework a week which could take up to 10 hours, as well as a two-page essay due each week. It takes a lot of time that not everyone has, but if you put in the effort, you could leave this class with a new appreciation for stat
If you want an A without doing much work: 1. Dont take Stooks 2. You should probably reconsider engineering as a major. One of the best professors Ive had at explaining difficult concepts simply... hes an interesting character with funny stories. There is a lot of HW but if you show up to class you should do just fine :)
He was alright teaching-wise. I feel like I have mastered all of the concepts and how to approach problems. The issue was that his tests did not have partial credit for very long problems, so it was hard to get a decent grade on things. The hw wasn't that bad though.
Stooks isn't the worst, but definitely not great. His lectures are so boring and you can learn the same info from the book and homework. The only big issue is that with online exams, he doesn't give any partial credit which isn't right for a thermodynamics class, especially when exams are like 70% of your grade. Otherwise, this class isn't so bad.
He is not as bad as everyone says. He teaches you to understand what is going on in the problem rather than just memorizing the formulas. He isn't the easiest professor to take, but you will actually learn the material. There is a ton of HW so be prepared for that. I would highly recommend going to class in-person if you have the chance.
Out of my whole college career, he is by far the worst professor I've had! Makes the test a lot harder than they should be, makes you read a book and write a 2 page paper per chapter every week, gives no partial credit even if you are .01 off the correct answer, Avoid his class if you can but if you are stuck with him, wish you the best.
Nice but terrible professor. Essays on a book plus super long HW on McGraw hill connect. Tests are hard and you have to learn how to use R. He gives no feedback and takes weeks to grade tests. You are self-taught over all his lectures are so scattered. He will postpone tests and put you in a bind at the end of the semester. Avoid him.
Absolutely awful. SO much work with really poor explanations. Terrible organization of the class and criteria. Tests are very difficult if you're not an expert on the subject matter. Partial credit doesn't exist in his mind either.
I have studied at the University of Georgia for 4 years now. This class is the ONLY thing that is risking my graduation. He gives you nothing. No support. No respect. No understanding. He does a HORRIBLE job explaining very difficult things and make no attempt to help when you are lost. Worse. Teacher. Ever. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU NEED CREDIT!
This class was no walk in the park. It's hard, you have to work for your grade. Be careful, as there aren't many grades for this course. Use the textbook, do the practice problems and you should be okay. However, this class was extremely stressful as we didn't have our first exam until after the withdraw period ended.
Dr. Stooksbury is a good professor who cares about his students learning the subject. If you go to class, do the homework, study for the test you will be fine. He is test heavy and they arent easy by any means, but he curves generously and most the question come straight from class or the text book.
His tests are hard but the content is reasonable. Homework is through Connect, & he'll often use homework questions on the tests. The hardest part of the class is paying attention until the end, but if you can do it, you'll be fine. The chapter book & essays aren't a big deal. I had an afternoon class time & I sometimes did it same-day.
Stooksbury is quite an interesting professor. Lectures are fine but can get off topic pretty easily. Tests are hard and questions are random, some relating to homework problems and some youve never seen before. Homework is hard and lengthy. No partial credit on exams at all.
He can get off topic easily and is way more focused on specifics than if you actually understand the content. There are many things that, if you write them, you will get -10 on TOP of getting the question wrong. Doesn't explain Entropy well, but insists you memorize his definitions and no others, down to specific wording.
If you skip class you will not succeed. Dr. Stooksbury explains what is going to be on the exams in class but he does not post anything online. If he mentions a problem in class expect to see it on the exam. He is entertaining to listen to and keeps lectures interesting. Connect is a big chunk of the grade make sure you do it and you're good.
Dr. Stooksbury is tough, but at the end of the day, he tells you EXACTLY what will be on the tests. Attend class, and pay attention to the in-class handouts!
Interesting guy, but can get off track pretty easily. Nothing on eLC, but makes it clear what is on tests during lectures. Goes through problem sets with you during classes. Homework is pretty lengthy sometimes but doable. If you go to class, you'll be good.
He is very old fashion and his tests are brutal.
Passing his class is definitely possible, especially if you read the textbook, do problems outside of HW and class, and study a load. But whether you will understand the material on his lectures alone is another question entirely. He frequently goes off topic, doesnt use ELC at all, and uses the textbook and connect as a crutch frequently
Don't do it.
Hard pass.
let me be so real: The content of this class is not hard if you just learn it from the textbook. Don't expect the lectures to be very helpful. Also he did not stick to his schedule at all and would sometimes announce exams barely a week in advance
Thermo is not easy at all, and you can't expect to learn everything instantly after he has gone over it in class. He tells you what will be on the test in class, and he knows what he's talking about. No partial credit on tests makes it very tough, but if you put the work in you can expect a good grade. He is a good guy and wont bore you.
He's an enjoyment to talk with, but that's pretty much it. He writes small and loves to stand in front of the board blocking your view, even when he sees you trying to see he doesn't move. Exams are brutal, but the material is from the book, the weekly discussion papers aren't fun. He doesn't post grades online, everything is very traditional.
he gets too much hate
Prof Stooks is interesting. He won't give you a formula sheet but you use the formulas so much ya memorize them anyway. YOU NEED TO GO TO CLASS TO PASS! He's a real strict grader on certain things. First test is the worst, I got a below a 50 but then A's on every other test. He ensures you know the topic very well, take him if you want to learn
Just don't. We started off the year behind because he kept having to go places and then didn't have our first exam until November. The exam was actually the hardest thing Ive ever taken and this is a statistics class. There is SOOO much homework and you have to write book reports. in a math based class. so yeah avoid.
Do not take Stooksberry
Doesn't provide clear grading criteria for exam, sometimes it seems like he just wants to take off points for no reason, even if your answer is right. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you have to go to lecture to have an idea of what not to do on exams. You can get a negative grade on exams if you write something else. Avoid for sure.
Avoid at all costs. His lectures are filled with criminally boring personal anecdotes and are mostly useless, but the tests include information only from his lectures. The homework is a big part of the grade, but is not that helpful for tests. Super harsh grader. BOASTS his 70% fail rate.
Dr. Stooksbury is a great guy to know in general. He has been involved with UGA for decades and knows a lot about the state of Georgia as a whole. His fyos class was a realistic and entertaining approach to engineering in the real world.
If you're reading this review, you probably HAVE to take 3510 and he's the only guy. Just do ALL of the homework and readings. Test questions come straight from the textbook, so just actually give it a good try. The worst part about this class is how time consuming it is.
Yo this teacher highkey buns he failed me because I called him my pookiebury. I don't think he likes me that much
I had a very poor experience taking this course. His lectures are long and very disorganized. He doesn't provide any resources online. Nothing is published on his course, so you won't be able to view notes if something doesn't make sense. You almost have to teach yourself. He is one of the worst professors that I have had as an undergrad student.
He's knowledgeable, but way out of touch with elc technology. There are limited resources and his handouts are confusing. The lectures drag on and don't help much. I passed the class by using lots of help from YouTube. Don't take him for any class if you can help it. He requires you to memorize so many formulas.
Worst class in all my years. Homework takes FOREVER, plus reading and discussion papers every week. If you're good at memorizing literal dozens of formulas and have taken AP stats (which he expects everyone to have done), you'll be fine but don't expect any help from him. Lectures are boring and not helpful. He makes the whole class needlessly hard
Dude is the worst professor at UGA.
HW are very long and worth 30%. He just reads from the book, but you NEED to go to class. He has his own definitions and formatting. Tells you what is on test in class, a lot of questions are from book, and in class examples. Very strict grader. Final is brutal, no partial credit, worth 35%. Makes you memorize all the equations and conversions.
Just don't take him. If an exam answer is not correct, automatically -10 points, but sometimes he takes off 15 or even 25 for some reason??? He tells you to email him about it so they can be added back later, but he doesn't post anything to eLC (not even syllabus) so you don't know if he actually added the points back. Very harsh grader for concept
Stooks gets a bad rap (probably because he comes off a little old fashioned/strict) but the class is not that bad. There is a ton of homework, but if you work on it in groups or do it twice, you'll get a 100 and it helps a lot. Tests are not too hard, but he grades harshly in certain areas. Learn his style and practice the example packet. He's nice
Dr. Stooksbury made this class much harder than necessary. He's a nice teacher, but there is no reason why we can't have a formula sheet during tests. He also takes a long time to grade tests. He also doesn't post any grades or use eLC. By the way, the final exam is worth at least 40% of your grade, and can replace test grades.
He is a great guy but one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He doesn't post anything on eLC and only makes announcements during class so if you miss one make sure to know someone else that was there. He never grades anything, we got the first two exam grades back after add/drop and right before the final so you never know how you're doing.
WORST professor I have had by far, lectures were a combination of rambling and deriving equations that take so much time for no reason. Rarely are legit concepts discussed, you have to learn those on your own. Rarely partial credit on tests, takes points off for anything he can find, and no formula sheet for any test which is insane for this class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Attendance is basically mandatory because he never posts anything online or sends any emails. If you're not in class when he hands back tests, you will never know your grade. Half the time, his lectures are irrelevant to the class material. Expect at least 50 homework problems per chapter. The homework also costs $100.
Run. Stooksbury is older than time. Very smart but incredibly stingy. Tons of homework on McGraw Hill. Doesn't post any material online so you have to attend class. Exams are difficult, but possible if you study a ton. He is very strict on exams; if you don't have it his way even if its right, points off. barely any partial credit either. GOOD LUCK
He's really not that bad if you do all the homework and study for the exams. -1 because of the 100+ question homeworks and -1 because we didn't get a test grade back until after thanksgiving. You have to memorize all formulas for the exams, but you get them for the final which replaces all of them. His class is not impossible.
