strands class was so boring i cant even describe it. i would DEF reccommend a diff professor. his class discussions and the reading assignemtns were so dull and he makes you feel like your wrong and only what he thinks is correct. the midterm was unbeleiveable. his class sucks. the weekly assignemtns are an easy A, but the midterm will screw you.
This guy is amazing. Anybody who said his class is boring either doesn't understand philosophy or how to be a college student. It's definitely not a blow off class, but it's easy to get an A if you pay attention and take notes. He'll make difficult readings seem like a breeze. My only problem is that he doesn't teach any of my other classes.
this class was boring. the 3 hour lectures seemed to drag on. overall the class was fairly easy, if you do all the assigned work.
he is not bad , bad the readings were very hard for me atleast and otherwise not bad at all, all you have to do is speak up ur opinion in the class and be open minded people.
This class was very boring. He never made it interesting for me. But, he is very helpful and gives you questions that will be on the midterm and final.
Class is largely based on group discussions, which can get boring. Dr. Strand is very nice and willing to answer questions, you get credit for participating in discussions, so speak up. gives out 10 reading questions. very easy to answer. 3 essays 1-3 pages long. gives midterm--final not cumulative. 1 group project. i aced class in 7.5 weeks.
He is the best Professor at OCC !! Do take him for Ethics - PHI 1610 . The class was quite interesting . He is big on class participation. Dr.Strand is extremely helpful . Do the study guides and the assignments well and you will get an A for sure !! It's a guaranteed A !
This class was interesting, but he assigns a LOT of writing. I took this class in a condensed summer session, though, so it might have just seemed like a lot. As long as you go to class, do the readings, participate in the discussions, follow his writing guidelines, and contribute to your group assignment, you will get an "A".
Liked him a lot. He is very helpful in class. The class is a little bit hard, u actually have to work a bit to get an A. BUT i actually learned some really great ideas that will be very helpful in life. He makes u think in class and after. I did not even know what Philosophy is before the class and now I am going for PHI 1710 intro to logic.
I thought the fact that every absence beyond 3, drops your grade from an A to an A- was dumb. I also didn't like that you couldn't just remain quiet. He would call on the quiet ones and ask them especially difficult questions. Tip: Always participate before he calls on you to participate. All in all, he was my best professor this semester.
Took Ethics. He's cool, funny, and a good teacher. He's always very determined to take discussions until the designated end of class, even if the class isn't interested. If you're a slacker, or hate to write or express your opinions, don't take his class. Also, he kind of reminds me of the guy from Star Trek. Will Shatner?
Great instructer. Leades very interesting discusions in class. As long as you partisipate you're golden.
Strand is great. He knows his philosophy. Sometimes the reading can get difficult, but he explains it later in class. Easy A. He is big on participation! Always pay attention! He WILL call on you!
Good guy, interesting class. Lots of writing
Really good instructor, need to pay attention during class- he will call on you! Most of the time you have to read 2 chapters for homework and answer some questions regarding to the stuff you just read.
I took this course online. He gives a lot of feedback on DB postings and assignments which is important (to me) for an online course. He responded to every DB assignment so it didn't seem like the make-work that DB assignments sometimes do. Course was well-organized.
I had no interest in philosophy before taking this class. Strand is easy going, informative, and keeps things interesting by raising thought provoking questions. He allows for discussion between students while he lectures, making the class interactive and enjoyable. I'm already signed up for another class of his :)
Everything about this class was enjoyable and informative to include the instructor and discussions --besides the quizzes and exams that is--. He has a PHD and he will test you according to his understanding and standards so beware he slams ya.(That is why there is so much extra credit [if you have time to do all of it])
I took Dr. Strand for Intro to Philosophy - and LOVED it! He is an excellent professor, I would take anything that he teaches. Class discussions were dynamic (participation is highly important) and based on a modest reading from the previous session. He will not bog you down with tons of reading. Take his classes!
Dr. Strand is an AWESOME teacher. He's funny and actually gets you interested in whatever you're learning. I had him for PHI 1710 which is his intro to logic class and he made the class so much better than the previous teacher I had. He also cares about his students and likes to make sure they understand what is going on. Best teacher!!
He is a fantastic teacher, I've had him for four classes now and I've learned more from him than the rest of my teachers combined. He cares about his students and engages them and he inspired me to study philosophy myself. I would recommend him to anyone, philosophy major or not. All you need for his class is an open mind and willingnes to learn.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He definitely knows what he's doing!! He cares about his students and wants everyone to understand the material. It is a lot of work but totally worth it. I would take any of his classes again. Come to class, pay attention (he will call on you)and do your homework! He also gave extra credit opportunities.
Took this course online and there is a lot of work required, weekly DB topics, weekly quizzes and several papers were due throughout the semester. The work was not that hard but you will need to read the book and the book is not easy to understand. The final was cumulative and hard but I still earned an A in the class and the prof seems nice.
Took SU/I online, 8 wk. DB posts aren't difficult - couple ea week. Used the book to thumb through but used google more. Need book for some of the DB posts. Utilize the practice quizzes, makes life easier. Final felt more difficult than tone of class suggested. Final paper was meh. Lots of building up to it. Spent 2hrs/wk tops, got an A.
D. Strand is a great Professor! Very clear in his teachings and is always more than willing to help you understand the material. Contributing to class discussions is a must! Weekly assignments are given from the textbook, so if you read and complete the study questions and 2 essays you'll easily get an A!
Online course taken during summer semester. Discussions are no problem and quizzes aren't difficult, but they are short so mistakes could hurt. Papers are super easy. If you get a quiz question wrong, call him and he'll explain the correct answer (correct answers not available online). Good class. Would recommend.
easy but had to read
Mr. Strand was a great professor. He was very clear in his instructions, answered questions via e-mail day or night, and was very helpful. He truly cares about his students and how much they understand. Practice quizzes available before graded quizzes. Would highly recommend this professor.
Took this as accelerated (7 week summer) class. Dr Strand wants his students to do well. Will answer any question if you email him. This class requires putting the time in, if you do this you can get an A. If you don't do the work... your problem. Best prof I've had for an online class. Must have text to pass class.
Worst class to take online!!He does not give good instructions AT ALL and the quizzes have questions about things that are not in the book, or on the class notes. Terrible online teaching.
Informal Logic & Philosophy- both online. Discussion boards are easy, sometimes fun! A must do for the points, no extra credit in his classes. Quizzes can be hard, must understand the material and be able to apply it to new problems! He really gives you everything you need to succeed. Very helpful! For I.L.- expect to work hard on your final essay
Standard Online Class: Weekly discussion boards and quizzes, a couple of papers. This professor is very helpful, responds to every discussion board and gives honest feedback on assignments. Do the assignments and get the grade that's all there is to it. He adds his own notes for every chapter which is basically like a handy outline.
He a really awesome teacher. You have homework due every week which are not that bad. 2 major essays. Class discussion can be very interesting but on some days kinda boring
I took this class online. There's a lot of reading. 10 question quizzes every week. 1 Discussion board every week, and you have to reply to 2 classmates discussion boards. 2 essays. Do the work and you'll pass with no problem.
Awesome online professor. Replies to email promptly and with clarity. If you do the work and ask questions you will do well.
Subject is dry and terms are similar to one another so confusion is common. Heavy use of textbook.
Hard to tell if I didn't like the professor or just had terrible classmates that didn't understand the subject. Class consisted primarily of students sharing opinions. Weekly quizzes were impossible to pass but homework was easy. Wish he taught more and made the students talk less. But decent professor overall.
Horrible professor. Super arrogant. Would not recommend.
Very good professor, he knows what he is talking about and is very funny. Only 9am class I attended almost every week!
Dr. Strand is a fantastic professor! Took both Intro to Philosophy and Ethics with him. Lectures are challenging and engaging. Read the book, participate in class and complete assignments each week and you will do well! Would definitely take another of his classes!
This professor was very good at engaging the majority of the class, and making the material easy to understand by leading good class discussions.
Very interesting man, he is a lot nicer to you if you participate without him calling on you. I really recommend sharing your opinion because when people do not participate on their own he calls you out and gives you harder questions. He kind of ignores the fact that some students are shy and do not want to always give input. Good class regardless.
Currently in one of his Intro. to Philo. classes this semester hands down, great teacher. He makes everyone feel comfortable enough to share their thoughts or opinions; quick to help when you don't understand; & class discussions always keep you interested definitely a class that requires depth of thought, so be open minded! Would take again.
All in all, solid professor. If you are thinking about taking this class, but are nervous about being called on, just know after the first week it will not be awkward anymore. He calls on everyone and really makes everyone feel comfortable. Actually gives feedback to your work. Not hard to get an A, but you need to put in more work than you think.
Over all, he is a good professor. Lectures aren't bad but beware he does randomly call on people to answer questions in class. He uses D2L and all the quizzes and homework assignments are on there. Fairly easy class. Book is a must!!
If you are planning on taking this course, he does grade on participation (100 points is how much he gave -- at least when I took the course) so if your not ready to share thoughts and ideas and what not, then I would just stay away because all you do is talk and sometimes get (minor) group presentations... nothing crazy though.
I took into to phi w/ him and it was a good experience! You learn so many interesting concepts and views. As long as you do your work, you will pass with an A. Also, participate in class as participation is worth 100 points. I say that if you just do your work (does not need to be perfect), attempt to share ideas in class you're good.
Dr. Stand is by far one of the best professors I have ever had! His ability to calmly lead the class in productive group discussions, in which everyone's points are respectfully challenged and listened to is amazing. He also gives thoughtful feedback to your writing, asking questions to make you think deeper. I would recommend him to everyone!
Very nice class if you're not afraid of being vocal with your opinion. It is a very opinion based class and he does well to get everyone involved. Very entertaining lectures and somewhat easy tests if you follow the study guides. You need the book to pass. Very light homework.
Lecture is heavy load starting from the very beginning of class up until the very last second of class. Be prepared to randomly be called on over & over again. Exams are moderate as long as you have a general idea of whats going on in the class. Weekly online quizzes/homework. Book needed. Pay attention, understand the material and you should pass.
Love this class. I would take it over and over again. He is very funny and even if you're shyer he will get a lecture going and will pull the words out of you. The lectures are amazing. Participation is key and reading is involved. There is homework but nothing too crazy. There are quizzes every week (5 questions). Flashcards were my best friend.
Participate/pay attention in group discussions, it will help during tests.
During a challenging time Dr. Strand was extremely understanding with my submission of my work. Therefore, I chose to submit my best work. I highly recommend him.. Do you work. Submit your best and your will do well.
He's a nice guy but for sure a hard grader. Don't expect to pass with an A if you're taking other classes, especially during the summer. Be prepared to be called on regardless of if you're comfortable talking or not. In class quizzes are difficult to pass as well. Excessively explain yourself in the weekly HW. Not an easy class at all.
Professor Strand, a very intelliggent instructor with much knowledge. He will seem weird the first week or two, but then you get used to it. Go to lecture, it will help when you take the tests. The study guides are very helpful and the online quizzes are easy. I would deff take him again. Study hard and you will do awesome!!
It's not that he's a tough grader, he's just very specific. He makes class fun, and gets everybody engaged whether you want to or not. Remembers everybody's name. He really is pretty awesome.
Strand is a really great professor. He makes class fun and makes everybody understand the material. Lots of extra credit, and you'll have lots of attempts for homework. If you show up in class and pay attention, everything should be fine.
He's alright. Be prepared to get called on when you have nothing to say and not called on when your hand is up. He has favorites in class (basically those who match his opinion). His lectures aren't very helpful and you could pass without going to his lectures if he didn't grade based on attendance. His tests and assignments are easy, at least.
Great professor and fair grader. Only thing is quizzes are difficult and answers are not found in book or notes. The final exam is 150 points with 55 questions. Very difficult
Great professor and fair grader. Only thing is quizzes are difficult and answers are not found in book or notes. The final exam is 150 points with 55 questions. Very difficult for
I took 2 classes over the summer. This was my 1st online class and it was rough. I felt like the due date for the assignments were incredibly difficult to stay on top of(work given on Weds due by Fri, additional work due 12am Tues). Some people are just good with classrooms and others are better dealing with online courses. Tests were impossible!
Quizzes were nothing short of the devils work, study if you want but the answers are nowhere to be found. The due dates were all over the place, my work was constantly graded late but I was only following the actual due dates, not his mental due dates! How do you get graded on opinion? Im not sure but I received a C- smh Controlled Chaos!
Took ethics online. I feel when I didnt put as much effort in my discussion posts I would get 100s and when I tried hard he always criticized them? He does give good feedback but dont for any reason go into this class thinking it will be an easy A. Its absolutely doable, but you need to work for it.
Hes a good professor as long as you read the material and participate in the weekly discussions. Lots of papers and weekly writing assignments, but they aren't difficult if you're a decent writer. Would take his ethics class again.
GOOD PROFESSOR, EXPLAINS WELL, HARD GRADER, NEEDS TO WRITE THREE ESSAYS AND THERE IS 2 TEST AND A FINAL
Dr. Strand is an excellent professor. He is very entertaining and makes the material as understandable as he can. The homework aligns with the quizzes and tests very well. Trust me, there are no surprises of the structure of questions on his tests as long as you pay attention. 10/10
Strand does an incredible job at teaching philosophy and critical thought. My only regret with his classes is not being able to take more of them!
This is my first time I've ever felt the need to rate a professor and I've been at OCC for 3 years. This is by far the worst professor I've had. He treats his online intro to ethics class students lik they're ethics majors or something. I have all A's and B's and I'm scared I'm not going to pass this class. DO NOT TAKE.
Dr. Strand genuinely wants his students to succeed. I had him for Intro to philosophy and ethics, and in both classes he asks several questions to students in the classroom to engage them in the topic, and give their opinion. It really was fun to be able to express your thoughts and have good arguments with others. Just be on time and do the work!
I took this class online, and it was a great experience. I feel like I learned a lot. There is a discussion board post required every week, and you definately use the textbook. Quizzes every week along with one big essay, and a couple other assignments. I passed with a 98, and I worked hard for it. It is very possible to get an A.
Great professor! This was by no means an easy A, it is definitely do-able though. He uses a lot of different assignments to get you to really understand the subject matter. I would take this professor again in a heartbeat!
This was an online course, it was a TON OF WORK. Writing assignments every week, the most intensive of which occured the last week of class, in addition to a fairly tough final exam. I learned alot, but it's not something I would do again.
Great guy and great lecturer. Really gets you to understand the material with ease. Inspired me to continue philosophy.
The class has a lot of writing and requires you to think but overall is easy to achieve a good grade. David stand is very fast and fair at providing feedback. He is also extremely understanding, if there is a problem and you email him he is more than willing to work with you.
Professor Strand is a good professor. If possible take the short term class because the material itself is easy and it can get boring at times, there is no need for a whole semester. If you participate in class the material will be even easier; I'm not someone that participates in classes but he makes the class feel comfortable to do so.
DO NOT TAKE. He allows 3 missed classes per semester and each one after that drops your grade by a LETTER at the end of the semester. Each time you show up late counts as missing 1/2 of the class, regardless of how late you are. He will legit mark you late if you show up while he's still taking attendance but you missed your name being called.
Hes very nice. The class can be a bit confusing at first, but youll get a hang of it pretty quickly. Be prepared to do a lot of reading and writing. Weekly discussion boards, two responses to classmates + weekly quizzes. Three writing assignments, and a 150 point final exam which is pretty difficult.
His grading is very tough. He is a nice guy but I don't like his style.
I didn't know I was signing up for another english course! I had him a previous semester and hated it but for some reason decided to take him again but only this time online. Last time (intro) he assigned papers left and right and a final essay along with a cumulative final and multiple exams (with essays), repeating same format with diff class.
Overall the class was very interesting. Weekly discussion, reading and quizzes. Reading can be hard at time, since its a lot. There is an essay in the middle of the class. 2 more essay like assignments right at the end which is stressful with the final coming up. Final was VERY hard lots of scenarios. keep a 100% in assignments you'll still pass.
He's good-natured and funny; I hope I can take a class in-person with him in the future. Really a gem. It's so rare to find a prof that really values understanding & takes time to help students learn from mistakes. If you put forth effort you WILL learn, & should be able to get an A. Online class was well-organized & the workload was appropriate.
Okay professor. Took an online class with him, and he assigns a lot of work each week. He gives an essay during the class and the final was cumulative. Gives quizzes each week(some weeks gives multiple) and the final was reasonably difficult. Wouldn't take a class with him again.
Horrible teacher. There's so much to read and he does not make anything interesting at all. Very complex but passable if you do all the work required. I think he needs to change his method of teaching this class. This course has potential of learning materials and applying to everyday life.
Professor Strand was a fantastic philosophy professor and I enjoyed taking his ethics class. This was a strictly online class so there was more work than another class but not too much so it's not overwhelming. He is a very fair grader and gives good feedback regarding discussions and a couple of papers that were required.
Professor Strand is excellent, he assigned a reasonable work load, is very clear on whats expected and genuinely seems to want you to understand the material. He responds quickly to questions, grades fairly and tests are relevant to the content he teaches. Awesome teacher, subject is challenging, but worth it !
Professor Strand is an excellent teacher. I took his philosophy class and although it was online, I was able to retain a lot of knowledge. He answers emails quickly and gives a reasonable amount of work. For discussions, he usually gives you a chance to make it up if you didn't do that well. Overall, I would recommend taking this class.
For me this is not an easy class and on top of that its an 8 week course so its a lot of work in a really short period of time. However Dr. Strand is really good at answering emails and questions and gives really helpful feedback. One of the very few teachers Ive had that wants his students to do well and enjoys helping them
This was a great class and he is an amazing professor. He gives great feedback and asks thought provoking questions. You will get out of it, what you put into it. I recommend this class, it was hard but very much worth it.
Professor Strand was a great professor! I took this class online and I was never once confused about when things were due or how to access them. Some weeks were heavier than others with course work but as long as you back up your explanations with enough commentary, it was fine. He gives great feedback on all assignments and how it can be improved.
Great professor! The class is essay and reading heavy, so be prepared to write A LOT. Outlining and taking notes will help shorten the process. Dr. Strand is funny, thoughtful, and asks the class questions frequently, expecting a response so be prepared to participate in discussions.
Took this class as an elective to higher my GPA, instead the opposite happened. He is a tough grader that just likes to deduct grades no matter how perfect your work was. DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!!! DONT THINK ABOUT TAKING HIM !!!!!!!!!!
does not do lectures. So much reading, you are basically teaching yourself. Grades HARD. way to much especially if you are taking multiple classes. Do not recommend to take class online
You are paying to teach yourself in his class. DO NOT TAKE
The class was a heavy load! A ton of reading and writing. Everything was very boring and not what youd expect to learn in ethics. The grading was very tough. Great guy but his requirements and teaching style wasnt good at all.
Literally do not take this course with him. Especially if you're taking other courses or have a heavy course load for the semester. Work load and pace for an online course is just so unreasonable, questions and assignments are hard to understand and decipher. His "notes" are rarely helpful or relevant to the reading topic of the week.
The hardest class that I have taken. You write and read about different philosophers sometimes twice a week. Exams were insanely challenging. You put in so much time to understand the readings since philosophy is hard to read. He teaches so much for an intro class especially if this class is just suppose to be a pre-req for you. Do not take him.
Do not take if you are just trying to fill an elective course. The work is triple the amount of my biology course. There are two discussion boards due a week, both of them make up two essays for what he asks you to do and they are only worth 10 points. An assignment is also due every week that makes you watch a 58 minute and write a paper on it.
He is by far one of the WORST professors I have ever come into contact with. He judges just about everything you do, is too lazy to grade papers for what they are and would rather rely on a 'generator' to tell you what your grade is. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I'm doing well in this class and I still wish I'd dropped it. The readings are hard to understand, and he springs essays on you with little time to do them (especially at the end of the semester). Discussion posts are worth 50% of the grade, and due on Thursday instead of Sunday. Abandon all hope, ye who register for PHI1510 with Professor Strand.
I took one of professor Strand's ethics courses in person, and I felt that it was very informative. This class had a heavy workload requiring a lot of reading and writing every single week. He taught it well and all the information needed to complete assignments was given. lectures covered the reading from the week before which I was not fond of.
This was the toughest class I've taken, but I felt like I learned SO MUCH! Dr. Strand included a free text, lots of supplemental materials, and assignments/quizzes that guided our learning. Practice tests available. He provided awesome feedback for each discussion and assignment and allowed revisions for higher grades. GREAT prof, would take again.
Such an amazing professor! nothing but good things to say about him. the lectures were very interactive and engaging. He was tough with some grading, but fair if he could see you understood. Make sure you take detailed notes. If there's something on the whiteboard, make sure you write it. Take notes on practice quiz feedback, So helpful for exams!
I am not one to leave a bad review on a professor, but I needed to. From the beginning of the semester, he was cancelling class, finding subs, etc. When he was there, he was alright, but I definitely would NOT recommend him. He only grades off of your 12 quizzes and 4 exams. Despite this being a difficult class he was one of my least fav professors
I absolutely loved Professor Strand! He had clear instructions and expectations. The textbook he provided was free, but there is a decent amount of reading for this class. He has quizzes at the beginning of class, that are on the reading. The lectures are great as well, he keeps you focused with breaks as well as his humor. Would 10/10 recommend.
Professor Strand's ETHIC1610 is challenging, but manageable with some effort. The lectures are engaging, and the free textbook is helpful. Using study tools like Unstuck ai and attending study sessions are key to success in this course.
Really like him. Was unsure based on other reviews, but he is laid back, kind, and patient. Always makes sure we understand the content and reminds us that he is available if we need help. Also has a SI. He is clear about what we need to know. This isn't a blowoff class, studying IS required. I will take more classes by him in the future.
This professor was absolutely terrible and made the class a nightmare. He assigned ridiculous amounts of homework and essays every single week. took forever to grade anything. lacked communication which was beyond frustrating and unprofessional. I would strongly advise anyone serious about their education to avoid this professor at all costs.
2710 He was great throughout the whole semester. Patient on live sessions and repeatedly mentioned how he loved questions. Really encouraged us to ask if we had a problem or didn't understand something. His SI Lily is the best! Lowkey disappointed he wasn't present for our final. He's easy on the eyes.
Sometimes it feels like Dr. Strand is totally checked out—like his brain is on vacation while he's still teaching. He's not a bad guy, he just seems completely out of it sometimes. Absolutely braindead.
