He's too hard. We have big papers, the exams cover too much stuff, they are very long. The exams are like 4 essays, a million multiple choice. You'll learn alot in his class but it's too much work.
very tough! his multiple choice questions are extremely tricky and if I didn't know better were meant to screw you up. ex. menopause occurs between 47-48 (accord. to text) his quest on exam was, 40-45, or 45-47, or 48-50. WHAT THE HECK???
his exams are tough.. only if you don't go to class or read the text. you need to do both or you won't do well. he also gives bonus points for attendance. he makes class very interesting and encourages questions and comments. you will learn in this class.
such a hard class. he presents too much material for you to even comprehend, so this makes learning anything impossible. tests are so picky. multiple choice are straight from the book..which he assigns a million pages to read and the essays are on stuff u wouldnt think they would be. dont take him!!
very hard. You have to read a lot and be prepared. Gives one point extra for every class you attend, but MC questions are wicked tricky and the essays are confusing. You really have to study
you learn so much in the class that it makes it so difficult to be tested on it. you need to attend and take notes and READ the text in order to do remotley ok on his exams.very clear with examples and a funny guy but the info is so much to take in for one class.recommended for psych majors
Dr. Sugarman does present a lot of good info. However he is a homophobe and makes several inappropriate comments. Be prepared, you will need to agree with his views if you want a good grade.
You definitely have to study hard for his class. Multiple choice are straight from the book, and essays are from his lectures. He can be a funny guy, but he expects you to work very hard as well. Gives LOTS of opportunities for extra credit, like giving you one point for every class you come to. Be
Professor is homophobic and ****. Several inappropriate comments. Also you better agree with his polics or you will have problems with him.
He is such a hard teacher, you have to read sooo much, try not to take him for human development, much easier teachers out there for that class. He is a nice man, but his exams are very difficult and the multiple choice and essays are impossible, no matter how MUCH YOU ReAD
Where to begin? Sugarman is awful. His personal problems leak all over the class in gross ways. He plays major favorites, usually females... So that may be a plus for you. He is just disinterested and such a psychological mess that you almost learn more from just watching his Human Behavior (abnormal) than what he teaches about the subject.

Very hard!U NEED 2attend ALL classes&take notes! Multiple choice RIGHT from book, &essay questions are brutal. Agree w/his views &basically?kiss a$$. Had him 4Family Psych &Personality! Extra credit 4 attendance. WAY2MUCH INFO@once b prepar

hard grader unreasonable amount of work
Had him for Personality and Social Psych & Law and something else that I cant think of right now...he is great though.
Although Dr. Sugarman's work is difficult, it was well worth all the effort. One of the few classes where the info has stuck with me for the last 2 years. I recommend taking him if you like a challenge and enjoy stimulation.

I loved every minute except the tests. The tests are frequently on five or more chapters PLUS his lectures, which are not based on the book. The questions are frequently confusing and, at times, used entirely different language from the notes or book, thus forcing a guess as to what he meant. I want to, but I just can't recommend him. :-(
great professor, after reading some reviews i was skeptical but so glad i found out on my own. he really made class interesting and enjoyable, and is very willing to help and advise those who go to him. Tests can be tricky, but as long as u do most of the reading youll be fine. great guy!
If you don't plan on sleeping during the symester then you might survive his class. I didn't survive.
I love this guy. Both as a professor and a person. If you ask he will help. He's very informative and cares about his students learning, not slipping through the class. You do have to work in this class, but it is all worth it! If you want to learn, take him, If you don't, you shouldn't be here anyway!
This is the best professor I have ever had. He is extreemly helpful and aminated. Makes his class lots of fun.
This is the best professor I have ever had. He is extreemly helpful and aminated. Makes his class lots of fun.
Hes a real funny and cool professor. Really fun to joke around wit. he encourages to ask questions and makes sure that he answers it. knows the material very well (explains very well) but as for the tests, they were alittle hard. mix of multiplechoice n essays(essays are conprehensive n count more) notes are on webct. study hard...REAL hard
I had him for personality, he is really funny and entertaining. Unfortunately he is imposable. His test are a nightmare. He warns you in the beginning of the class that he is a hard teacher and he is not kidding. I would not recommend taking him.
DO NOT TAKE HIM... IF YOU DO BE READY TO PAINFULLY FAIL.
He does care- if you talk to him after class. He has a high drop rate. Tests are impossible. Class isn't boring. But tests are painful. Even if you think you did well- you probably didnt.
Professor Sugarman is a great teacher. He explains the material clearly, while making class fun. He tells you exactly what is on the exam. He puts up the powerpoints prior to class so you dont have to rush to take notes and follow along. If anyone thinks his class is unfair obviously doesnt belong in college because he is beyond helpful. :)
This is by far the worst professor ive had. You use the book alot for preparation for the exam but his tests have nothing really to do with his lectures. His exams are impossible. if you show up to class you get xtra points so i suggest it
Had him for Human Development. Exams are NOT easy, but if you study hard, you will do fine. No trick questions- just study the Lecture material WELL for the exams, and read the ENTIRE text book for the MC ?'s. If you fail to do this, you will definitely do poorly. He does not explain material well, so make sure you study the powerpoints!
One of the better ones who can connect with the students and be able to translate the material. Course is slightly hard as you must keep pace but that's what college is about. Thought he had a wider breadth vs. some psych profs who seemed far too insulated within their field.
I kept reading on here that prof Sugmarman is a hard prof, but i completely disagree. His classes are challenging , yes. However, you can't expect to be in college and not put in effort. If you are truly interested in psychology, then you should be dedicated to learning and therefor do fine in his class.
funny, attractive and charismatic...no need to say more...take his class!
You have to take his class. The exams are tough, but the lectures are great. He is so animated and theatrical.
sugarman is very difficult, he has a high drop rate and he expects a lot from his students. I scored a 62 on my first exam, but was able to bring it up to a B by the end of the semester, so if you work hard it is possible. this class has taught me more about psychology than any other class. All in all I am glad I took him. Great prof. loves the sub
I took personality.Grade is based on exams, one is dropped. M.C.is based on book(ie.read chapter)short answers based on(simple, clear, webCT posted)PPT lectures.Extra points for going to class! He lays this out up front. You dont get easier in a legit college class.Plus hes interesting and entertaining.I mean seriously, how am I the 1st to post this
if you really care about learning human dev. take it with him, if not find an easier teacher. 4 exams, extra points for coming to class (if not for that no one would be there) somewhat funny..deffinitly weird..but is able to keep your attention. exams are rediculouss! read the book..seriously!
He is one of the most interesting prof's I've ever had!
You will start off the class hating him, but in the end you will find he is a reasonable and VERY fair guy. Tests are HARD, you have to study and read the book to do well. He gives extra points for attending the lecture and posts all lecture slides on line. He is a bit annoying at times but overall a great professor! You will learn a lot!
In my experience as a student there are professors who want their students to do well, and those who do not. Although I did well in his class, he thoroughly enjoys when students do poorly on tests. Not only is his personality obnoxious, he expects you to regurgitate information back to him rather than understand it.
I agree with the comment before mine. I am a 4.0 student who has much experience in psych courses- I am familiar with the material, yet score poorly on his tests. The scoring is set up to have you do poorly and I can't see how he's gotten away with it. Jokes more than teaches, but expects unreasonable regurgitation out of you. Time to retire...
one of the hardest teachers ive ever had. his exams are all based on restating word for word facts off of his lecture slides and you lose points for using other words, he could care less if you actually know anything. he up front tells you its nearly impossible to get a good grade in his class and hes right, i would not recommend him AT ALL.
If you intend to do well, attend class! He has great lectures and do not let him scare you off on the first day! For the text, use the online study guide, which is found in your text. You do not need to learn his notes word for word, but you do need to know how to explain the concepts in essay format.
This class is hard, but not impossible. The first day of class, we were over limited for number of students enrolled, but by the end, about half dropped. This class is only intended for students who are serious about studying and understanding the material. He has high standards and will not sympathize with those who don't adhere to them.
His classes are ridiculously hard. Do not take him if you expect to get any work done in your other classes. To pass his exams you have to study like crazy and even then it won't matter.
Mixed feelings about this professor, but I will say that if you do not expect to devote a TON of time to studying for this class, take it with someone else. I agree with others here that he would rather see you recite his powerpoints on a test than understand the material - believe me there's a LOT of material on tests to memorize so it's NOT easy!
This guy is terrible. He's an egomaniac that is more concerned with being known as a hard teacher than he is with his students learning. He seemed annoyed whenever I asked questions in class. I'm an honor student and don't mind hard work or challenging professors but I found him to be unfair and uninterested in his students. Awful experience.
Seriously people, "really, it's college!" He gives you ALL of the outcomes for the exam, it's just a matter of you applying yourself and studying the material... I took personality this summer with him and absolutely enjoyed the class! He's very engaging and will answer any question you may have. It's a lot of hard work, but payed off in the end!
wow! this was the hardest class i EVER took in my entire life! he's a very fun and funny teacher but his tests are ridiculous!! i had to read the chapters twice in order to pass the tests at all, and by mid-semester half the class dropped out. if ure not ready to study, dont take this class!!!
Our understanding (the construct intended to be measured) of the material is being measured by the amount of words we can remember from his powerpoints and regurgitate back on to paper. The assumption: regurgitation of words = understanding of concepts. Ironically the sugarmister taught us himself that this is an issue of construct validity!
His tests are murderous, but his teaching style is really helpful in learning the material. He requires a lot of reading and memorization for his tests. Very difficult, but definitely possible. If you don't want to work hard, take a different professor, or change majors.
He is one of the most arrogant and unhelpful teachers I have ever had the displeasure of taking a class from. Whenever anyone asks me about him, I strongly suggest that they do not take one of his classes. Tests in his classes are designed to make you fail. He even states that if everyone does well on a test it was too easy, not that every one did
If you take Sugarman (and show up to his classes of course!) you will probably learn more than you would taking the course with someone else. It's also very possible to get an A with him. The formula for success: flashcards for learner outcomes (powerpoints) + outlining assigned readings + extra attendence points. Very interesting course.
Dr. Sugarman is a great professor. His tests are not hard at all! He basically gives you the questions right in the syllabus. All the objectives are pretty much what he asks in the essay part of the test, and the 20 multiple choice come straight from the vocab in the book. If you go to class you'll get extra bonus points. put in effort, you'll pass
Sugarman is a great professor his classes are very interesting and you learn a lot the only bad thing about this class were his exams! the exams are ridiculous but with attendance points you end up with a grade a lot higher than what you expected
I don't see what everyone's problem is with Dr. Sugarman. I think he is hysterical, a great professor, he cares about his students and is blunt. If you want stuff sugar coated college isn't for you. The material he's teaching isn't easy, nevertheless he makes it fun. I'd take his class again. One of the very VERY few outstanding professors at RIC.
kind of hard. You have to study alot and hes pretty hard on grading
Dr. Sugarman is a good guy. If you stick out the class and work hard you will be surprised of your resulting grade. he gives you extra credit and if you show up to class you get extra points there too. You will learn so much with him and if you put in the work your grade will show it
Dr. Sugarman's classes are awesome. Lectures are upbeat, and he is very funny. His tests are usually multiple choice. I have take 2 classes with him (family psych and personality) and he is very fair with grading. He provides a study sheet for all tests..guaranteed to get a good grade. He does utilize the book so read it. attendance matters.
He is really hard. you have to read the book and listen to what he says beuase his exams are axactlly what he says and u cant pass with out reading the text books he has 5 exams. but he is and upbeat nice guy
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM. Worst professor I've had. Only class I have ever had to drop!!! 4tests and thats it. Tests are super hard!
Very hard you MUST read book and Must study hard he is a great person and teacher but is very difficult.
I found Sugerman's class quite enjoyable and I looked forward to going to listening to his lectures. He is a hard tester but if you put in the effort along with the extra credit points you get for going to class you will be good. I struggled throughout the semester but I wouldn't change that because I truly learned a lot and he never bored me!
My favorite teacher this semester. He's funny and tells stories to help you learn the material. You get the powerpoints he uses through blackboard. This is the first time I've ever read a book cover to cover so buy it because you are tested on it. The tests are hard but study and you will do fine. He also uses attendance as bonus points.
Exams are brutal! Be ready to move in the library. However, you will actually KNOW/understand what he teaches. Lectures are interesting and he has great real-life stories/examples for almost everything. It really helps you grasp the concept. He gives you all the tools you need to do well and will help a great deal during office hours.
Awesome professor. Be ready to work your tail off but he does take that into account. tests are hard but he gives points for attendance. stick with it and he will notice your hard work!
This is a smart professor, he really knows what he's talking about and communicates very clearly and effectively. His tests are very hard, so make sure you really study and memorize every term/concept if you want to do well. Also, he is very blunt and makes inapropiate jokes which made me uncomfortable. But besides that, a good professor.
Favorite professor. I am the queen of laughing at corny jokes, and that's all he tells. So basically I'm just giggling the whole class. Never boring
Good teacher, good human being. His tests are hard, and you must read the book. He has very dry humor and says lots of puns... So stay away if that's not for you. Could be a little easier but he pushes his students. Unnecessary difficulty
I highly recommend Dr. Sugarman. The level of learning and retaining knowledge from his classes surpasses any other professor I have ever taken. He is straightforward. Test content comes from lecture and the textbook. 1) read and know the book! 2) come to class, take notes and be prepared to remember all lecture material! You'll pass. He's awesome.
Sugarman is an amazing lecturer and also pretty funny although he does recycle some jokes. Listen to his lectures and read everything in the book and you should be ok. The tests can be a bit tricky but he is deiniftely one of the best professors I've ever had.
I enjoyed this professor's lectures. He is very engaging, tells funny stories & explains tough concepts w examples that you will remember. His tests are SO hard! Not only does he test from his lecturepower points but he also tests from the long chapters. I found it to be just way too much material to know as thoroughly as he expected.
This is the second class of his that I've taken. He is very straightforward and good at explaining material, also posts his powerpoints online for studying. Very hard tests, but also fair. Attendance counts. His lectures run long but are pretty interesting.
I've taken him for Family Psych and thoroughly enjoyed it. Print out the powerpoints, write effective notes and study, you'll be fine. But you need to put the work in. Extremely approachable and willing to help you out when need be. He's a great guy and will always be there for you!
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!! I love Dr. Sugarman so much! He is hilarious and so helpful. He puts up the powerpoints on blackboard for you to print out and read the book. He has 3 simulations that deal with different aspects of a trial. These are FUN and you will learn a lot. You have to blog a lot and write papers on them. 2 tests. Hard but awesome!
Dr. Sugarman was the best professor I had. He gives lectures all the time but makes them relatable and super easy to understand. He tells you what to study for the test just make sure you do the readings and take extra notes on the power points. I would take him again in a heartbeat. He is also very easy to talk to in or out of class.
Dr. Sugarman is the best professor I've had at RIC! He's hilarious & tries to make the class as enjoyable as possible. He tells personal stories that really help the students understand the material. Read the chapter and memorize your notes and it's an easy A. He also gives extra points for attendance. He's really down to earth & great to talk to!
Good professor. Good lectures. Exams are half written based on power points he lectured and half multiple choice on book. I skimmed book and got 75-80% on the multiple choice; if fully read I would have gotten 100. 5 Exams. Extra credit given for every class attendance. Would take again. Many freshman struggled- need some college experience
RUN AWAY!!!!!!!! Horrible teacher, takes pride in students failure. Whatever you do do not take this man for anything. Gives attitude when asked questions
IF YOU HAVE OR WANT A LIFE, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This class has ruined my semester. There is SO MUCH READING; I'm talking an average of 30 pages of dense material from a book that costs SO MUCH money. I have had so much stress. The lectures are GREAT, my class was great, but the material was too much. The exams are ridiculous. SSSTAY AWAY!
I have dealt with alot of stuff in my many years at RIC, but I refuse to take him again. If you take him, you'll have a great time, he's hilarious and he puts on a great show, but MAAANNNNNN the READDDINNGG is like WTFFFFFFF hahahaha. WAAYYY TOO MUCH. I'm stressed. I CANNOT WAIT TO GET OUT OF THIS CLASS WHEN THE SEMESTER IS OVER. I have no life.
You've probably heard the funny stories about him, you've probably heard his booming animated voice in the halls. I have too, when I was once young and naive. I took him thinking I'd have fun and learn- and I DID! BUUUTT the READING is KILLIN ME. AVOID! DON'T BE LURED IN! He's like the sirens on the rocks that lure sailors to their doom. DANGER!
I love this professor! He is super funny and makes the lectures interesting. However, theres 5 exams and I had to work my butt off studying to get a B. In terms of grading, he's kind of on the tougher side. Puts lectures online, but if you go to every class you get extra points at the end of the semester. Would take him again!
Extremely loud and abrasive. Spends way too much time on one point and they're all his stories that he thinks are funny but they're not. Disorganized material & you have to read the book. Flat out tells you he doesn't give A's & if you miss an exam for ANY reason, its 5 points off your next one, no exceptions. loves to get in your face too. BEWARE.
One of the best Psychology Professors at RIC. Doesn't make you buy a book (tests on lecture only) and gives study guide which is word for word on test. Study guide is fairly large but as long as you put aside the time to understand the material you will do well.
Dr. Sugarman is a great "College" professor. If you are still programmed for, or need, the "High School" teaching experience to learn and pass- avoid him. If you are a serious learner and working towards a professional career, then you need what he has to teach. If you don't know the point I'm making- look for profs that have big smiley faces.
Honestly, he just talks at you all class. Some people found him humorous but he offended me on a few occasions. His tests are really difficult and when I asked for help he was sarcastic and not at all helpful. He's not terrible but definitely be prepared to really work really hard if test taking isn't your best skill.
DONT BE FOOLED. This guy comes off as very laid back but beware, it's a trick. This guy is one tough professor and be sure you know this is class you want before the third exam, you will not be able to drop the class and you will not be able to bring your grade by then if you have below a C+ unless you miraculously get perfect scores in the end
Dr. Sugarman is a great professor if you tend to work hard for your grades. His exams can be challenging but if you're serious about studying you'll be okay. He gives a bonus point for every lecture you attend. There are 5 exams based off of the textbook and his lecture, no papers, and no homework.
He is a great professor. We had 2 separate tests on exam days. 1 was short-answer questions from lecture & the answers had to be extremely specific. 2nd was from the book which you were required to read independently. He took attendance and each day counted as an extra credit point. You will do well if you attend class, read the book & study ALOT!
Would never take a class with him again. Gets side tracked easily. Tough exams
Too much reading. The exams were terrible, felt like I was failing the entire time. I enjoyed the lectures though, and there was extra credit available which helped.
I went on this site before selecting this professor and I was very much skeptical. I took some of the critiques & pointers and applied them to the class. I read EVERY chapter in that book and memorized ALL notes on his hand outs & I got an A! If your willing to do the work, youll get the grade you want. Its simple as that. You CAN pass!
I will never again take a class with him. He's a funny guy but the exams are so tough. Have to memorize every slide during lecture and understand all of the chapters that are over 100 pages. I would not recommend him to anyone.
One of the most challenging and rewarding courses I have ever taken at RIC. Dr. Sugarman made it engaging and made you work for it. Simulations made the class so much better.
I love this prof! But must be said his exams are one of the hardest tests I have taken in the full time I've been at RIC. Very passionate about the what he teaches. Must read chapters. test have two components 10 m.c. questions per chapter and usually 15 essay questions on lectures. Back of sylabus are questions per exam to study with, very helpful
Throughout my 3 plus semesters at RIC, I've heard only bad things about Professor Sugarmans teaching techniques. His lectures consist of his own personal stories for the most part. Those stories don't pertain to things on the exam. He comes across as arrogant at times and is a tough grader. He seems to not put in the extra effort to actually teach.
Family Psychology is not necessarily a hard course, but Dr. Sugarman's exams are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT! There is such an overwhelming amount of material to study and memorize for the exams. You have to memorize a majority of the lectures because most of the questions on his exams are short answers. We never used the textbook in class, ever!
Sugarman is the BEST TEACHER EVER he is the BOMB if you fail its your own fault
If you can avoid taking this class do it. His tests are impossible and he gets off on failing students. He is a miserable person and doesnt respect disability accommodations. If for some reason you have to make sure to study the textbooks as well as the lectures. Do not expect any mercy from him. Truly a terrible teacher with no empathy.
Professor Sugarman is very nice, however he is very sporadic in his teaching. His lectures are super long and while he tries to relate them to life, he just ends up talking about his experiences. The tests are super hard and confusing, the lecture does not really help. The book, while mandatory, was never used and did not help at all. Try to avoid!
I enjoyed Professor Sugarman! I think he has great intentions. However, he WILL make you work for your grade. He gives study guides but you need to know how to apply those things with real life examples. He is clear with his rubric, but you will need to put in work. RIC: Really, it's college. As he says.
I don't understand how this professor has poor reviews! He is very caring and accommodating. He truly wants the best for his students. His course is a challenge, but you need to work for it and there is nothing wrong with that. He gives exam study guides and as long as you truly study and know the concepts, you will do great. Awesome professor.
Not sure how Dr. Sugarman has good reviews, yea there is extra credit but it's because you literally have to sit through his whole lecture. Not funny (dry sense of humor) no homework but the exams are essay formed and timed. Powerpoints are really no use because some if any help you on the exam. He makes you feel dumb when you ask questions ish..
His lectures are very interesting, but his tests are HARD. Questions from test are based of lectures & reading so you have to do both . His exams are short answers only
The reason people give him bad reviews is because they are not willing to work for an A! Yes, he does lecture a lot but he tells you exactly how to succeed in his class, and if you do it, you will. Print out his slides beforehand and take notes right on them. Exams are word for word out of his slides. Make use of connect and take the practice quiz
Dr. Sugarman was one of the best professors I have ever taken. His lectures are informative and interesting. I looked forward to class every week and I learned so much from him. He gives out extra credit just for showing up to class. His test are short answer but if you pay attention and study the materials it isn't impossible to get a good grade.
Professor Sugarman is a very nice and extremely intelligent individual. However, during class, he just lectures off slides which makes it difficult to pay attention and then assigns exams in which are all essay questions. Therefore, it is very difficult to do well on exams, and they make up your entire grade. Extra credit is available, though.
Sugarman does have hard exams, but he tells you everything you have to do to get an A. Somtimes a bit awkward. We talk about Freud and other psychologists who had a hyper sexual focus, but Sugarman would ALWAYS make someone say what "the big O" meant, though we all know what it is and people don't feel comfortable saying it but he would just wait.
This professor is very rude . Go to class you get extra bonus points on the exams, it will help. Go to class in general to know what will be on the exam. Study ahead of time before the exam. HE DOESN'T SCALE EXAMS AT ALL. Try to do well on all the quizzes, it doesn't make a difference but it will help your grade.
Alot of people say he isn't helpful and rate him bad because they dont take it seriously or study. You literally get 17 quizzes online you can bang them out whenever and it can boost your grade. You get attendance points whenever you show up to class!! His lectures are interesting. I would participate in his class, hes funny and a caring person.
This class has an intense course load and is definitely challenging. SHOW UP TO CLASS you get bonus points for attendance. Quizzes are online, exams are essay-based and challenging. Make flashcards of every slide. Professor Sugarman gives real-life examples making content easier to understand. This class is a grind, but worth it.
dont do it im telling you
I took multiple classes he taught. Exams are tough, lecture heavy, but people who are complaining simply do not put the work in. I have gotten Bs and up in every class I have taken with him. His expectations have prepared me for grad school. Print lectures out and focus on what he says! Add to the printouts so you can focus on things not on slides!
