Good class. Hard class.
Class really sucked!!!
such an amazing teacher. even though its hard and alot of work i learned so much about the OT
An amazing professor with an amazing heart. Not only his he academic, but he is also a Pastor at Grace EV Free. A pastor's heart with a scholars mind is a great thing to have in the classroom.
He's a great teacher. Very knowledgeable and kind.
this class was one of the best i've taken at biola, even though it was hard. i am thankful for teachers who have a passion for the material they are teaching, and for the One who they are teaching about.
His survey of the Old Testament is both comprehensive and challenging. Be prepared to spend a solid 8-10 hours per week to get a good grade. Also, be aware of his sermon-y teaching style.
Most work I have EVER had to put into a class (OT). I get A's and I had to work my BUTT off to pass. This is looking back on all four years- upper division classes have nothing on this guy.
very good content but way too much work!he is a great man with tons of knowledge, but the class was somewhat boring and hard.

Talley rocks!
I had to take this class over again....I passed with Peirce
I failed the class because of how ridiculous it was. I passed it with pierce.

He is a very challenging teacher, but if you apply yourself and put procrastination long far away from you, you will do well. He expects you to be a good student, and you can be when you have a wonderful teacher like him.
I loved this class. It was like getting to listen to a brillant sermon every week. The outlines of the Bible were tough, but if you didn't slack off, they were very beneficial. Awesome teacher!

tons of work but you learn a lot.
caring man, exciting professor.
he's so passionate, and knows what he's talking about. looots of work though
He is one of the best profs at Biola. He is completely sincere, genuine and his class was one of my favorites.
Awsome class for those who don't do well on tests. Pretty much do all the work and you will get at least a "B"
hard class great teacher
Take him! Knows his stuff.
This man is very knowlegdable, and he applies what we learn in class to our daily lives. He is amazing! However, his class does require a lot of work! Reading and analyzing a book of the Bible every week is a lot to do! Nevertheless, the hard work pays off. In the end, you realize how much you have learned!
Passionate about obedient living and seeing Christians come to maturity in Christ!!!! His passion comes through for God! When he teaches, he preaches --and when he preaches, he teaches!
Talley's class is ALOT of work and most of it seemed like busy work.
I wish he was my dad. The best days were when he preached sermons during class. DO NOT take him if you need to miss class occasionally, do not always turn in your work on time, or aren't the best at spacing out large projects. Other profs are easier, but Talley's worth it if you can handle being a good student.
I am very thankful I took Old Testament from Talley. I am proud of the amount of work in studying the Bible I did for that class--it's worth it. I learned so much about the Old Testament and I understand the bigger picture of what God has been doing since the beginning of time. He is passionate and applies OT theology to our lives today.
Although this class had TONS of reading and the outlines consumed most of your time, I really did learn SO MUCH from his class. If you can tough it out and push through outlining the OT... then I recommend his class. You will not be sorry!
He preaches WAY to much. It's so hard to wade through what he's preaching to find what we need for the test. There's ALOT of Bible reading, but I don't mind that. His assignments aren't always clear, but conferencing with classmates helps you understand.
Not that hard. Just put in the work on your worksheets
In this class I learned so much. Stay ahead on the worksheet and Tozer reading. Do not take this class if you have an extremely full load semester. This class is doable but time consuming
Talley's class was lots and lots of work, but I learned SO much from all of my time spent doing the worksheets. It's highly rewarding once you reach the end of the semester and it's all worth it. He's a cool guy too.
Talley is an excellent teacher. He is interested in the Bible and his students well being. I didn't get much out of the Bible until his class. Its a lot of work but worth it. Take this class if you have the time.
Good teacher, some what easy tests, if you take this class the only thing i suggest is to keep up to date with your worksheets (bible readings) with him or a TA, something he doesnt keep you up to date on
The only thing I learned about the OT is what I read in the Bible myself. I did not pay a couple thousand dollars for him to teach me the Colorado Statement on Biblical Sexual Morality and give me a sermon.
its a hard class.. u can get alot from it if u work hard but its easy to do what u need to to get done and learn nothing just to get a ok grade..
Dr. Talley is a fantastic teacher! Before his class I struggled to not get bored with the Old Testament, but he made it come alive for me. The worksheets are hard but so worth it since they force you to look at the text carefully and clearly. I miss having him as a teacher!
I mean I don't know if he's a good teacher or anything but he is a pretty great uncle!
I thought the OT was boring and kind of useless until I took OT with him. I see some people complained about the preaching, but that is one of my favorite parts of his class. This is a great class but it is a lot of work. His outlines take about 5hours, and there is about 1 a week. But, I believe it is worth the work, I mean come on, its the BIBLE!
Yes, this class has a lot of work. But professor Talley is really great and he makes everything very relevant and applicable. If you listen and do all the assignments you will learn a massive amount about the old testament and do at least decently (grade-wise)
This is one of the most rewarding lower division classes at Biola. When you take OT, be sure to take it with Talley. The workload is the kind of work that will make you learn. You go to college to learn, and Talley will make you learn.
If you want to learn about OT there is no better professor than Talley. His insight and wisdom has made a great impact on my understanding of scripture. The workload is not easy but it's worth it and you will learn A LOT.
Professor Talley is the best professors I have had yet. He is very clear about what he wants in the assignments and on the tests. There is a bit of work involved but it is most definitely achievable. I wouldn't recommended procrastinating.
Professor Talley's class as legend tells is not easy; but if you stay on top of the assignments and have them prepared well in advance of their due date this class is navigable. It is my experience that even if you do get a B, the knowledge you gain from his class in the OT is incredible.
This class is hard, stay on top of the worksheets and study for the tests and you should be fine. I never really cared about the Old Testament, but now I love it and I learned so much!
You learn a lot in this class but a lot of work and hard to keep up with! Great professor
He is a fantastic professor and if you have the opportunity you should take him. He is as hard as everyone says, just try not to procrastinate and you'll be fine :)
Dr. Talley really knows his Bible and taking his class was 100% worth it. I learned so much, and I think everyone should take it even with the work load. He gives you a new appreciation for the Old Testament.
Dr. Talley is very knowledgable. He elaborates and summarizes the content and he's teaching is just amazing. We need more professors like him outside of Biola
Get a heads up from someone who has already taken the class and look at their worksheets to get a feel for the amount of work you'll be doing. . ..
Dr. Talley is Bible scholar to listen to. I regret not being more involved in class, not paying more attention, and not connecting with him. That said, his infamous outlines are VERY time consuming. NOT a class for procrastinators like myself. Also, Talley can be a bit standoffish and seemingly a bit rude or aloof, but he does love his students.
First off, Dr. Talley is a brilliant scholar. He's a wonderful man who loves Jesus and is passionate. That being said, his class is brutal. His legendary worksheets are all they're cracked up to be, so I'll join the chorus and encourage you to not slack off. That being said, you WILL learn in his class, and you might even enjoy it along the way.
I was always really excited to go into Dr. Talley's class and learn about the insight he had into the Old Testament. Worksheets are difficult and make you think a ton, but the knowledge I have gained from this class is so worth all the work!
Talley is AMAZING. With his teaching, the worksheets, the reading and the lecture, He makes the Old Testament Understandable and applicable to our day and age. Take Talley over any old testament teacher at Biola. You won't regret it!
GREAT teacher! A LOT of work though! If you don't procrastinate on his worksheets then you'll do fine. Easy quizzes and test material is taken straight out of the notes. I learned a ton from Talley and don't regret taking the course even though the HW was unending...
Dr. Talley is by far one of the most influential people I have ever had the pleasure to know. He doesn't just teach, He applies it to your life so you can relate and learn to become a more knowledgeable Christian. Lots of work, but I have never learned so much about the Bible in my life. He really cares for his students. I highly recommend him!
Talley is very knowledgable, and I think he cares for his students. It's a large class so there is no personal interaction with the professor. My biggest suggestion is to stay up on the reading and worksheets and you will do fine.
Really helpful class, taking it was Talley was amazing I learned a lot. Worksheets take a while but if you stay on top of them and the readings you will get an A.
Beware! Talley is not for the faint-hearted! But his class is oh so worth all of the work you put into it. OT with Talley is not for everyone, but if you are willing to put the work in to learn what God wants to teach you through digging deep into the OT, take Talley's class!
I love Dr. Talley because he challenged me to really read the Old Testament and learn from it. Although his worksheets are a lot of work, I realized that they are very constructive and teach you to read the Bible carefully. Would highly recommend this class cause the work is totally worth it. Lectures are really good too.
Yes, the worksheets take a little while, but that's it. They are so manageable. I did this class WHILE is physiology and I still got an A. If I can do it, you can too!
Talley expects a lot from his students. The worksheets are infamous, and they take a lot of time and effort (usually 6-8 pages), but they are so helpful in understanding the OT. Go to his office hours. He really appreciates it when students take the time to check up on their progress. He gives good feedback on past worksheets.
His class is mostly busy work. He is also great lecturer, I took him online so it was 100% videos. I honestly don't get why Biola charges so much to take this class because literally the only thing he really does is grade (everything else is already recorded).
The worksheets are a lot of work but well worth it to gain a deeper understanding of the OT. He is an easy grader, it is a large class size, he is so willing to connect and communicate with students, his lectures and insights are wonderful, and this class really expanded my view of God's interaction with His people. I highly recommend him!!
Talley's a knowledgable professor. His lectures can get a little too preachy at times for my taste, but if you're in to that type of thing, you'll like him.
Talley is an incredible professor. I came out of class not only with knowledge, but with a desire to seek God more. You read almost all of the Old Testament for the worksheets project. That project is definitely tedious, but so rewarding! I received 100% on them so it is not impossible.
Dr. Talley expects good work from students. His infamous worksheets are not bad. It does come around and bite you in the butt if you do not know how to manage time and space out the work load. But, I loved every moment working on the worksheets and my love for the Old Testament grew immensely. Talley is a beast and a prophet.
Amazing prof that expects every student to work hard in order to receive a good grade. However he does emphasize the importance of you learning over receiving a good grade.
Tests? Easy, you'll do well in the class even if you don't do well on the tests. Pop quizzes given often based off of reading (usually partner or group). Talley worksheets? Hard but SO WORTH IT. Start early and you'll be fine. GO IN FOR HELP. DO IT. Super awesome class, TAKE IT WITH TALLEY.
You know when you go the gym 5 days a week to try and attain a goal of weight loss or muscle build? The work to GET THERE isn't easy, but it pays off. That's what it is like taking Dr. Talley's class. Everyone badmouths his homework load, but I refer back to my notes multiple times a month even now--his lectures changed my life! A MUST take.
AMAZING professor. I learned more in his class than any other Bible class! He is always ready to help you. Lectures are long, but notes are basically given to you making studying easy. If you pay attention and read it is an easy class. Do your worksheets a few days before they are due. Lots of work, but so worth it. For sure take him!
The lectures are amazing; he can definitely explain things really well, and he shares his wisdom. Cares for how students do academically and spiritually. There's a fairly large workload, so be ready to read and delve into the material and stay on top of assignments. He gives some room for late assignments, doesn't really take attendance.
Yes, Talley worksheets are a lot of work. But if you stay on top of them, they are totally doable. There is a lot of homework in this class but his lectures are amazing. Every single class he applies what you're learning in the Old Testament to your life today. I highly recommend taking him! It is completely worth the effort.
I loved Dr. Talleys class. His worksheets are a lot of work, but his lectures and passion for what he teaches makes it worth it. His classes were the highlight of my day. What he says is inspiring, and the class was life changing.
Great class, lots of work, and sucked at the end because he entered a last major grade wrong (higher than it was) I felt bad so I told him and he told me he appreciated my honesty. A few days later he changed it, to a score lower than what I got and by the time I noticed it couldn't be changed. Smh.
LOVED Talley. Makes OT interesting and understandable. His infamous worksheets are not that bad, just a little time consuming. Would recommend!
The only hard thing about this class is his worksheets because they take up a lot of time. But, as long as you manage your time well you will be fine.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! He cares so much about his students and their spiritual growth. BUT, he is very difficult because of the worksheets and it is imperative that you not work with others on those worksheets because he does not allow it. Very independent work. 10/10 recommend.
If you don't take Talley for OT then you are missing out. OT with Talley will change your life if you let it. Don't let the workload keep you from taking this class. It will be the best decision you ever make.
His OT class was my FAVORITE class! He is very structured and organized in his teaching and made me love the Old Testament. I don't love history but Talley's lectures are so engaging and just overall incredible. The worksheets are very time consuming but you learn so much from them so they are well worth it.
Old Testament with Talley is hard work, but if you are looking for a class that will leave you feeling on fire for the Lord (if you actually do the work) then this class is for you. Bible classes are for spiritual growth, not easy As.
Professor Talley is an amazing professor! He lectures pretty much every class time but they feel more like sermons than they do class notes. He encourages his students to dig deeper into their faith with God. It is a lot of work but it's not busy work, he's usually understanding about late work and worksheets, but only if you go talk to him.
Really good prof. His worksheets are tough at first but once you get the hang of it, it gets easier. Make sure to pay attention in class because he says a lot of important things that you don't want to miss. I learned a lot from his class and would definitely recommend.
I enjoyed Professor Talley's Old Testament class. He is very knowledgeable about the Bible and is very passionate about sharing it with his students. You do need to work for your grade though. His worksheets are not too bad, just takes a decent amount of time. He is available after class though and is willing to discuss grades.
Although his notes are fill in the blank and his tests are directly from the notes, the amount of reading and homework in which he makes you do is unbelievable. Each worksheet took me like 3/4 days & got to the point where I was reading summaries online instead of actually reading the bible because I was trying to catch up in his class. DON'T TAKE!
I had Talley for OT. It is LOT of work. The worksheets are super time-consuming (3 days minimum) and you won't get any grades on them until the end of the sem (unless you schedule office hours). But his lectures are so impactful and insightful and you will learn to love the OT. You get out what you put in and will learn a ton if you put the work in
There are two things that you must know prior to taking this class: worksheets and exams. For worksheets, Dr. Talley gives you more than enough time to finish everything on time. Exams, as long as you fill in the notes, you'll be fine. Worksheets took me 3hr/each and I was able to get a full 300/300 on them. Lectures, interesting. Won't fall asleep
Dr. Talley's OT History and Literature class was tough for me. His class is solely lectures and work. If you're someone who isn't on top of their game when it comes to assignments, I would NOT recommend Talley. His assignments take time and effort in order to get a good grade. They were overwhelming for me. However, he is very knowledgeable. 6/10.
Great lecturer, every class meeting I was encouraged and had a greater understanding of the OT. Be prepared to work on the worksheets for 2+ hours for each. Tally is very knowledgeable but I found it difficult to talk to him outside of class, doesn't give much grace on assignments.
This class is a ton of work and I would recommend taking a different professor unless you are going to college to become a pastor. This class is just excessive.
Do not take OT History & Lit from Dr. Talley! He did not have any grades posted for any of the numerous quizzes, worksheets, and reading questions until more than halfway through the semester. His rubrics are not clear. On the first day of class he said he "encourages you to take this class from another professor" if you can't handle the work.
Honestly, not the worst prof you'll ever come across, but definitely not the greatest. 10 worksheets(3-5 pg each) take a while. Don't expect to get grades back until the end of the semester. It's ridiculous, because they literally take him 3 minutes to grade each. He can also make a lot of insensitive comments. My advice? Take another prof's class.
If you can, save yourself from taking this class. Excessive homework for no reason. Makes you hate reading the Bible because of the excessive homework. The coursework is more than 2 or 3 of my classes combined. His lectures are useless. He talks and brags about his life for 20-30 minutes of class then talks about course material at the last minute.
I would say the biggest downside of Talley is his personality. His lectures are honestly a pain to sit through, 60% of it is about himself and his own life, and he collects papers near the end so you basically are required to sit through them. I got a good grade in his class, but worksheets are a lot of work and a pain. Avoid this class if you can.
If you are looking for an easy class to take this is not it. Professor Talley makes it clear at the beginning of the semester that if you can not handle the workload you should drop his class. Too many readings and assignments it is hard to keep up along with other classes. I was downing in work. No extra credit opportunities. Hard to get feedback.
Taking Talley's class was conceivably the most complicated introductory college course so far. You must always be prepared for a massive workload, and you should have your Bible ready sine you read it a lot. If you decide to take this class, bare in mind that it will take an immense amount of time and energy. It feels more like a job that a class.
If you're looking to do well and have a lighter load, do not take Talley. He always says in class that he "understands that we're busy" but the curriculum does not reflect that. If you have 15 credits, need to go to chapel, work, church, etc, this is not the class for you.
There is just way to many assignments for how the class is wayed in units. I am currenlty taking 15 units and this class (worth 3 units) matches or passes the homework of my 4 other 3 unit classes. Though I like his lectures, by the time he presents them you have already written a 6 page analysis paper and taken a test on what hes talking about.
Talley is known for his worksheets because they take a very, very long time to complete BUT I gained so much knowlege about the bible from these worksheets (you go through books of the bible chapter by chaper sumarizing and finding themes). He also has you do reading questions and take tests. Though this class is hard you will truly grow from it.
David Talley is from a different generation and therefore does not know how to effectively teach students in 2022. He thinks that students will master material by doing arbitratry worksheets on a WEEKLY basis. He is so old that another student was literally 65 years old!
Professor Talley is tough, there is no doubt about that, but he is one of the best lecturers I have had. He is extremely knowledgeable about the Old Testament and Scripture in general, and really does have a heart for the Lord and for His work. Exams are easy (READ THE NOTES), and you can do the worksheets if you spend the appropriate time.
TAKE DR. IMES !!!!!!!!! SHE'S A QUEEN & YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO ANY WORKSHEETS
2 paths for work. Worksheet and exam: TAKE EXAMS. W.S take days to do, but for exams all you do is read the books, and know your stuff. Grades very hard for the W.S, and late work policy is very unforgiving. Great lectures, not worth the stress and strife from W.S, weekly mini papers, and pop-quizzes, yes those are real not just in the movies.
I was initially nervous for this class based on the reputation between students, but Talley turned out to be amazing! His lectures were intriguing and engaging with stories relative to the content of the Old Testament. His coursepack is also made to help you significantly on his exams. I'd love to take him again!
Dr. Talley loves God and is deeply passionate about impacting his students. While classes are primarily lectures, they are very powerful and applicable, and you gain an incredible understanding of the OT. Worksheets are very time-consuming but worth the effort. If you want to learn the OT and are willing to work, definitely take Dr. Talley!
My favorite professor by far. I never leave reviews, but professor Talley is quite special! Yes, the worksheets take a fair bit of time, but if you don't procrastinate, they are completely doable. On more than one occassion, I left leave his lecture completely in awe, with a total shift in perspective. I feel very fortunate to have taken his class.
Professor Talley was truly my favorite professor ever. He gave AMAZING lectures, & I learned so much from him! You will learn so much from every assignment that you have. Professor Talley is also such a nice & caring guy. He is such a nice guy & he's always understanding if you simply communicate with him in person. Build a relationship with him!
I took his OT class. Overall good professor, but I gave him a 3 because it is not for everybody. He gives A LOT of homework, and, while it is not particularly hard, it does take a lot of time. If your semester is going to be packed then this is not the class for you. If you have a lot of time during a semester and want to get deep in the OT, do it.
He gives so much homework-his worksheets took about 7 hours each and we have to do 10 during the semester, and sometimes he assigns two at a time. I was going to write all of the different steps required for his worksheets but I don't have enough characters available. Also he loves interrupting his lectures with slides about irrelevant topics.
I am thankful for the opportunity to take Old Testament with Dr. Talley. This class is my favorite class that I have taken at Biola. Dr. Talley is a caring professor and good lecturer. Although the worksheets for this class are very time consuming, they helped me slow down and think through what I was reading. The books used were excellent too.
Talley goes through his paces. Nothing about his content is compelling, he is pre-set. He is on auto-set and does not make anything especially interesting. This guy is way more focused on his other tasks and he mails in all of his lectures. He is smart and well learned but he is also on auto pilot.
