knows what hes talking about and loves teaching it, life is loopy!
Dave's a great teacher. He's excited about the material and he gets the students excited and interested. The material may be new, but if the student works hard there's no reason not to get an A.
I hate Tmme! He has got to be one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He teaches in such a roundabout way that by the time he gets to the point you are so bored you've fallen asleep. He teaches as if the class is stupid and can't comprehend anything.
Professor Temme, or just "Dave" as his followers call him is unhelpful, annoying, and a terrible teacher. He goes out of his way to be unorthodox and changes biological concepts and vocab. to arbitrary words of his choice. I have an A and I stil
This is not a slacker class - you have to work your butt off. It is a great foundation for future classes. His exams are tough cause you have to read his mind.
Without the help of the TA's, I would have flunked the class for sure. His exams were extremely hard and they really didn't have that much to do with the textbook. This class was unnecessarily boring and it was hard that it made me hate biology
I hated this class.. He tries to make biology fun by being unorthodox but just succeeds in being confusing. The tests do not match the lectures.
I love Dave's enthusiasm for teaching. This guy is also very knowledgeable. Sometimes he lost me on discussions, and often went off on odd tangents. The TA help is awesome! I like Dave and how he can tie everything together. He gives just the right amount of homework, quizes, etc.

I love that he is so passionate about the subject and about teaching it to us!
Anyone who has made a negative comment about Temme is crazy. He is a great teacher who instead of making you memorize dumb facts, he makes you learn how to really THINK about concepts. So stop complaining and being lazy and you might like him.
This guy wrote his own text book...it's obvious the class will not be easy, but with the right attitude you can do anything!!

He keeps the students attention, and teaches Biology in a way to keep the students attention. It's college, of course you have to work hard, I'm just grateful I have a prof. who loves teaching like Temme does.
Dave rocks! I've been enlightened to the loopy nature of life!
this class is boring! you don't even have to attend lecture, just read the book and you'll know everything, since he wrote it and practically recites it word for word. he does seem like a nice guy if only the book was used just as supplemental instruction and not as the only instruction.
dave changed the way i think about life.
I like that he tries to challenge us, but is still very willing to help us understand the material. If you feel he is unclear then you aren't putting in the effort to listen and try to understand. The only problem I have is that he likes to dot things that don't need to be dotted and mumbles "all right" after explaing a concept. Watch and listen it's kinda funny sometimes.
I guess he's just one of those love it or hate it professors. I loved him for his passion, but he does make things confusing by oversimplifying sometimes. Biology is just one of those subjects where you need memorization at some point; and trying to eliminate that process as much as possible isn't always helpful .. but TA sessions help a LOT.
Temme sucks. Anyone that says otherwise is just pandering to his Leftist propaganda, which always finds its way into class. His tests are NOTHING like what he teaches. The book is lame, typos, b/w stick figures, honestly... it is embarassing. Temme berates an belittles students. I can't believe anyone would give him a positive review.
Awesome teacher. Very helpful, interesting and unique.
The worst teacher that I have taken so far at the U. His tests are ridiculous, and he won't help you out. He pawns his students off to his TAs to help answer questions, which isn't all that bad except they don't even understand all that much about the crap he teaches. Its all from his own book, so prepare to learn his vocab. Expect a low grade.
He is a fun and interesting teacher.
Great Professor. Loves to teach therefore makes the class fun. Ratings on him are low because he teaches a Gen Ed class that is hard.
He is great. Really hard class, but he actually cares how students are doing! Tough because the class is so huge... but make use of the TA's! Go to TA sessions before EVERY "Core Quiz" (you'll learn what those are) and exam... it makes a WORLD of difference. Temme is passionate, a nerd, and fun.
His class was the best I've ever taken. He's such an awesome guy, and he's so passionate about bioloy. He also really cares about how the students are doing. Just go to TA sessions before quizes, and they'll basically tell you exactly what to write. If you do that, the class is cake
The class covers a lot of material in a little bit of time but he is avaliable whenever you need him and he has a ton of TAs to help out. He writes his own textbook and basically teaches it word for word.
Temme is awesome. Hard class in that a ton of material is covered but if you're willing to do the work and do what he tells you to do, you'll excell in the class.
He is a wacky guy, but very smart.
Very interesting. A lot of reading a lot of work. Rewarding though.
Temme was a very difficult teacher, but also tried really hard to give us the tools to succeed. He gave us plenty of TA's and plenty of study sessions. If you put in the effort, you got the grade.
David Temme is an awful professor. The material he teaches in class never shows up on the test. The tests and quizzes are impossible. My advice is to go to EVERY TA session you can find, especially before quizzes and tests. The TAs are usually extremely helpful. All in All: FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR.
Everybody hates temme, but he is an excellent professor, he teaches a little bit different, the only thing i am worried about is that he doesnt teach you the words to biology terms, he just explains how it works, which is great, he is excellent and pretty funny too. he loves to dance and make weird movements.
This is not a class for those who wish to be scientists. He teaches his own hypothesis as to what life is and he does not like being disagreed with. If you want a class that only requires spewing back what the teacher says and not thinking then go for it. To let you know that I'm not failed student, I'm currently in grad school studying viruses.
Fun class but.. he's not too fair when grading.
Omg....this class is really hard...reading....vocab...really hard...but somehow, it s usefull n Temme is funny teacher. But the exam n quiz are really hard...the words he use to asking really new...International student should be careful....
Temme is incredibly brilliant, and so passionate about biology. His class is best if you really care about learning the subject. If you are just taking it because you have to, choose another teacher. He is difficult, but his class is so rewarding.
He is truly one of the greatest teachers if you are willing to work.
very very good teacher. Different approach to biology. more logical than rote memorization
Amazing professor. Hard, but amazing.
He doesn't make you memorize all the little details, you just have to get the big picture. The easy way to pass this class is to e-mail the TAs and they will help you study for the exams, and pass them with flying colors. Do well on the core quizzes and you will be fine.
You either hate his teaching style or you love it. I really liked it. It helped me conceptualize and understand the principles of biology. The core quizzes were extremely easy and educational at the same time, they serve as buffers in case you aren't a great test taker. *BONUS: The TAs are good looking.
Temme is awesome! I absolutely loved his class, lectures were never dry or boring and you will actually remember what you learn. Go to the TA sessions before core quizzes & you'll do fine. He doesn't make you memorize little details but instead focuses on fundamental concepts. You'll have to work for your grade but it's really worth it. Great class
Dr. Temme teaches in his own way. I respect that his is willing to use his own methods to teach biology. He is very passionate about biology. He often became angry at the class for being zombie like during his lectures. He demands active participation in the class. The TA sessions are a useful learning tool before quizzes and tests.
One of the best professors I have ever had. His class is difficult and taught in an unconventional manner, but you really learn a lot.
Extremely difficult Quizzes and tests. TA sessions have to be visited or expect to fail, get there early or good luck getting a seat or somewhere to listen.
Interesting...
Writes his own book, and his lectures are pretty much the book verbatim. He's pretty hard but still a great teacher. Best advice I can give you: GO TO THE TA SESSIONS!
For being a required GE class, this class was way too hard. He is very unhelpful, and very nitpicky about everything. Don't take this class. Find a different Prof.
His class is fun but Test is whole different story. International students need to be really careful!! Try to go to TA session as many times as you can.
If you want to learn anything about biology and retain that information, this is the class! Best part is Temme actually cares if you understand the stuff or not! And he teaches you to learn which spills over into other classes! Definately be dedicated and attend the TA sessions!
He has a passion for the subject! He is both entertaining and informative. It has been a pleasure taking his class. I wish I had another class with him. There is nothing bad I can say about him or his class. Take it, embrace confusion!
Loved his class. Every lecture, he would make us laugh. He has such passion about teaching and biology. One of the best classes I have ever taken. He's also the best science teacher I've had. I've learned so much and he's kept me interested the entire time. Take biology from Temme!
Temme was a great lecturer! He may be hard especiallyl for first time freshmans. It is harder than your average biology class, but i promise promise promise that if your going into any medical field it will make every class after that easy. Its very conceptualize and different test setting. Go to the TA sessions, they will help you get through it!!
makes you adopt his own method of thinking for human physiology. not as applicable in my opinion. enthusiastic teacher, but you could learn this stuff from the pros in any book...sorry dave
You better have somewhat of a science background before this class, this class is hard!!! He's a really smart teacher and definitely knows what he's talking about. But the class is impossible without somewhat of a background. Don't think that if the very first day you don't understand some things that it will eventually come and get easier!
He is a great teacher who knows what he is talking about... But he is very hard and his tests are so so diffucult. If you do not study you will not pass period. But pay attention and you will get a decient grade.Overall i learned a ton from Temme
An excellent Professor that some people have difficulty with. His teaching method and thought processes are unorthodox, but once learned make any future biology classes easier by teaching you an easier way of thinking about things. He focuses on learning concepts, not memorization. People who don't like him usually don't make the effort to learn.
He's a really great teacher. I loved his teaching style which has made future classes so much easier to understand. His style is sometimes harder for some students, but if you go to class, study, and use the TA's, then it really opens your mind!! His tests are the hardest thing.
Temme is an excellent teacher who wants his students to understand the big principles and not just memorize stuff. His class is difficult but by paying attention in class, reading parts of the book and going to TA sessions you can do well. This class made me enjoy Biology.
He has very interesting lectures, and the lectures are very useful for the tests. The tests are hard, but if you go to class and at least skim the book, they are manageable. The TA's for the most part are great. Overall, I enjoyed this class.
I really enjoyed this class. It was hard and you really had to study for it, but overall it was a fun class and I learned a lot. Temme expected a lot from you but he was very helpful and wanted you to do well in the class.
Prof. is intelligent and funny, and breaks down concepts to a very -I mean VERY- basic level. This sometimes obstructs learning in some ways, that he isn't willing to combine some more involved aspects earlier. Lots of time wasted in such thorough recap, is painful. Testing involves more applied & abstract knowledge than is available thru lecture.
If you take Temme's class, listen to how he says RIGHT after every other word or sentence. It will drive you absolutely mad. Once you have been cursed by this, it will make his class unbearable. Right, right, rye, hurright, rye, right, right. Avoid this class if tourrets bother you.
His goal is to really help you understand the material and how it works. If you're wanting to just go through this class by memorizing like other classes, too bad.
He definitely likes teaching biology.
This is a quality professor. Don't expect an easy course, but his teaching is amazing. He challenges his students, and expects engagement on their part, but explains concepts clearly. You may not get an A from him, but you will learn alot.
Amazing teacher but this class is not easy. He explains the subject very well but the tests are all about application of what you learned so you have to understand the concept very well. He bases his class heavlly on the book but he does skip a lot, I recommend you read it and try not to fall behind. Overall best biology class ever
I don't know why people complain that he says "right" after a lot of his sentences, I think it's hilarious. Like the teacher from South Park.."mmkay?". He is an amazing teacher. I have no doubt that he teaches the materials as best and simply as it can be taught.
The best teacher I've ever had, he really knows his stuff. Dave teaches in a fun and simple way but you have to make sure you understand the simple concepts very well or you will never be able to apply it to the tests. His lectures are fun!
Dave Temme is without a doubt the most intelligent person I have ever had the fortune of coming across in my life. Even as a computer engineering major, I fully believe that I did myself a favor by taking a class from him. Highly recommended!
Awesome teacher. His lectures are so much fun. The principles he teaches are applicable to so many other things than biology. I wouldn't take this class from anyone else.
He is the best teacher I have ever had. I loved his class; I always learned something new. Some kids disliked him but that's probably because they were too lazy to think and actually learn. He didn't focused on memorization which was nice instead he just wanted you to understand the consents. The TAs help a lot and so does reading the book.
Worst class I've EVER taken! Take this from someone else if you want to understand biology!
This teacher presents the material in such a way that the class is incredibly difficult! However, if you do take this class, you WILL learn an awful lot.
He's a nice guy and a lot of people loved this class. I hated it just because i didn't like the way he presented Biology. His weird conceptual way of teaching really teaches most kids to think but I was not a fan. Become really familiar with the TA's. They are the best. Especially Catherine, they are always at the library so find their hours.
Hard and didn't really make sense. I took this class from him and then from someone else. The material that was gone over in the classes weren't the same at all. Temme kind of just did his own thing. If you want to be ready for consecutive biology courses I'd say, take it from someone else.
HARD to understand sometimes, and it was painful, but I actually learn somethings, but if you really want to enjoy your biology class DON'T TAKE IT WITH HIM.
Dr Temme was awesome. Its true his style of teaching is different but if you attend class and study what is gone over in class you'll do great, because that is what is on the test. Besides that he makes class fun and entertaining, he wants you to understand the material and do well. I enjoyed his class.
This class was difficult, but not impossible. Even for those who are good with science, expect to spend a TON of time in TA study sessions. Most of his information presented in class so prepare to do a lot of work outside the class
Dave is so fun to listen to and he is always willing to help his students. There is a lot of material covered in the class, but I recommend taking this course. Incredibly knowledgable teacher!
Temme's lectures are interesting, but very conceptual and vague, while the tests and quizzes are really specific. You'd think it would help to use the textbook but he wrote it, so it's just as unhelpful. He's also kind of mean. If you're just taking this class for GenEd, take it from someone else with a more traditional teaching style.
He is the most passionate person I have ever met. He isn't just teaching so he can do research. He loves biology and loves to share his love for biology.
He is very passionate about what he teaches. He presents the material in a way that forces students to spend additional time on their own to learn the material. You will need help from the TA's at some point. His tests were hard, but not impossible.
If I could go back and have him again I wouldn't. He makes this way harder than it has to be. Quizzes are easy, but the tests use a bunch of material we didn't and try to confuse you. He wants you to be so familiar with biology that you can use it in any situation he presents you with. Only have him if you genuinely love biology.
Temme was one of my favorite professors last semester and his course was great. I already had prior knowledge of the subject, but he introduced the material in a nontraditional perspective. He is very energetic and is passionate about biology. However, I relied heavily on his TAs to perform well on exams.
I had almost no interest in the subject of Biology before I took Professor Temme's class. He was very hard on his students, and the tests were quite hard as well, but I feel like I learned a lot in his class. He had a great passion for biology, and it was a joy learning the subject from him.
One of the most amazing professors I have ever had. He teaches for understanding. His class is difficult if you are a lazy sack, so work hard. Great class.
Temme doesn't teach at the same conceptual level that he tests. The resources he gives are sparse. I'm a good student, just not very good at taking notes, so I only got a B. He seems to like fear mongering and insulting the class based on test performance.
I have had Dave for both principles and physiology and I really enjoy his teaching style. He teaches for comprehension rather than memorization, so If you just want to memorize a bunch of enzymes don't take his class. That being said his classes aren't easy but if you put in the effort and are smart, an A is very doable.
Doesn't teach what will be on the tests. He uses very obscure references and his handouts are basically worthless unless he tells you to memorize a specific part. I didn't like how if the whole class did poorly on a test he'd blame it on the classes lack of preparation instead of his teaching methods. The only useful stuff was the Review Sessions.
Temme's teaching methods are unorthodox, but effective. This class is not as hard as people say it is and as long as you go to the TA study sessions, you will do fine.
I absolutely loved his class. He does teach in a very unique style that makes you actually learn the material and not just memorize for an exam. He doesn't care about specifics, he wants you to know the processes and apply it to everyday life. Once you get that it's easy. If you want an easy A or GE don't take bio anyway. Favorite professor.
Awesome professor who has set up the best T.A. program I have ever come in contact with. He definitely requires you to work. But you know what you need to study and you will learn in his class.
Temme is a good professor, but the class is very hard and nearly impossible to pass without going to see the TAs. It is good to learn with other students, but I had to work at my job a lot this semester, and it made life really hard trying to get to the TA sessions. Once again, if you don't attend them then you will NOT do well in the class.
Dave is a very good professor. He has set up the best T.A. session that is very helpful. This class would be impossible without the help of the ta's. Overall the class is difficult but Dave knows what he is doing and is a very knowledgeable professor. If you enjoy biology and want to learn how to study, take this class.
He tells the students that he does not care about details, but then tests you on those same details. The class can be interesting at times. However, Professor Temme is not accomodating at all and I would not recommend taking this class from him. Not worth the aggravation and pain that he puts you through.
To be honest I don't understand why people think this class is so hard. Maybe it's cause ppl say it's hard, BS! It just takes a lot of work but it's not hard. Dave's class is not based on memorization. The class is based on knowing the material so that you actually understand it. But PLEASE ATTEND TA SESSIONS!! Thats the only way you'll pass.
Dave is a Great professor; that being said you have to put work into his class if you want to succeed & do well. Here's the thing; Dave can only teach, the student is the one that has to learn. Dave has TA sessions setup for a reason.people who complain: there probably hundreds of hours or more of total possible library times you could have gone to
Prof. Temme is an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher. He provides ample opportunity to learn however he teaches in a very particular way which may not be easy for many students. He uses a book that he wrote which does not give an alternative perspective. He teaches the way he sees the world and not necessarily the common terms or explanations.
The class was hard and I felt it was unnecessary.
Incredible, incredible teacher that knows his subject and is dedicated to sharing his passion. He cares about teaching concepts rather than minute details. For tests, an overall understanding is required rather than memorization of details. The book is extremely useful, as it contains Temme's mind! The dozens of TAs are also invaluable.
Extremely difficult class, because he wants you to answer the exams the way he wants it and if you don't he marks you off. You have quizzes in class. The exams are ridiculous. He goes on rants and gets off subject constantly.
Temme is the worst professor I have had so far. He goes on 20-30 minute rants each lecture about how passionate he is about teaching and how he is the greatest professor instead of teaching biology. He is not detail oriented so if you have to take more biology classes after this class don't take Temme's class.
If you are a biology major, this class is for you. If you are NOT a biology major, like myself, DO NOT take him! This is way too intense to be a required class. I am the kind of person who cares about getting good grades, but it is hard to want to get a good grade in a class that is very uninteresting and way too much to stress out about.
Dave is so amazing. People who give him a poor rating probably do it because of one of more of the following 1) they don't work hard enough, 2) they don't like his teaching style, 3) they want a class that just gives them an easy A. If you don't take this class, you're missing out on one of the best opportunities.
I took this class as a freshman and admired Dave's care for the students. He TRULY wants you to learn. Some people don't give him nearly enough credit. Being an "A" student means almost nothing, and if you think you're a good student and hated the class, you likely learn based on pure short-term memorization, which won't do you any good in the end.
Dave's physiology class was one of the most challenging classes I took at the U. He has a unique approach to teaching, the way I study and answer questions for all other biology classes has completely changed because of this course. Take anatomy before taking this class, it helps a lot! Lecture attendance is essential, & earning an "A" is doable.
Fantastic teacher - distills complicated concepts into their essence, always with an eye on the system. Frustration: his jerkiness when students aren't "getting it" - inevitably attributed to lack of effort & lazy learning habits (ok, more than a little true), but he forgets we're struggling with HUGE concepts for the 1st time that he's taught 30x.
Temme was confusing, tests did not match what was taught, and he would not work with or listen to students but instead told them to find a TA as he was too busy. I regret taking this class from him.
He understands he's teaching a bunch of lazy freshmen, so he spends a lot of lecture time ranting about putting work in. If you're a student that reads his textbook (which you need to get!!) you'll do fine as long as you put in a a good amount of studying. Also, TA's are lifesavers if you're confused.
His way of teaching is VERY different and abstract. Doesn't have time to explain things if you need extra help. He only cares about how much you learn, not grades. Which is good, but honestly in college grades DO matter. Be careful if you need an A because this is not an easy class.
In hindsight, I think that this is one of the most important classes that I've taken in college.
This class was horrible. I am so enthusiastic about biology; it's my passion. I went to every TA session possible, studied hard, and completely understood all of the material. Then I went and took the exams. I cried. Almost nothing he teaches are on the exams, and I would never, EVER take this class again. This class nearly ruined biology for me.
Phisio was amazing. You don't need to buy a text book but you will end up making your own. Use the pages he provides and understand them. He is a conceptual teacher, not someone to just check off a box. If you do not NEED this class don't take it. He always had time for questions and was always willing to give extra help. DO NOT SKIP LECTURES!!!
this class was interesting. However, it should NOT be taken as your introductory biology class if you're serious about it. Because this class is almost entirely conceptual you're not getting down to the nitty gritty of biology & learning the facts. Tests are graded off if you think the way HE does, not if you really understand.
he wrote his own book, so you better like reading and listening to lectures because on test he wants HIS definition from HIS book. You can have a perfect understanding but if you forget one word that he thinks is important he will dock you. Good luck. I wouldnt take another class from him ever.
He really makes you learn the material. If you try to just coast through his class you will fail..
He was really hard. Doesn't explain much of the quiz material in class and you have to go to additional discussion sections to get any help. He uses his own textbook and the ideas he teaches are based in science but his own conclusions and his way of teaching isn't very instructive.
I loved this professor he definitely made you earn your grade.
I've taken biology before and understood and enjoyed it. Temme makes up his own stuff and he wrote his own book which is not helpful because it is the same way he talks, ununderstandable.
he thinks his ideas are more corrrect than anyone else, to prove it he wrote his own book. So for tests you need to read the book and listen to lectures and then still not have any idea how to answer test questions because that is just the way he teaches. He also rants a lot during lecture wich got old. Used to love bio till this class :(
This class was really hard for me, but I learned a lot from it. The T.A.s are incredible, take advantage of the library sessions and the quizzes will be a breeze! Tests are hard, but if you work hard it definitely pays off. He challenges you to think in different ways which can be frustrating but once you finish the class you feel so accomplished!
I've never worked so hard and struggled so much in a class. Dave can be pretty confusing, but the TA's are extremely helpful. I would have had no idea on some of the quizzes if it weren't for going to TA sessions. Definitely not a class that you can breeze through...
It's not as tough as some people say. It's not just about spending a lot of time with the TAs. I found that it was necessary to spend some time on my own to really do well on his exams, because big groups can be pretty inefficient at times.
He's not necessarily bad, just has a controversial teaching style. He's more interested in getting you to think like him than to teach. Considering he writes his own book, you're stuck with his style. Many try to write off his odd teaching by saying he has a great T.A. system, but if meeting with T.A.s is a must, what does that say about him?
His lecture are extremely confusing and when you ask questions he just tells you to look back at the book. Not helpful.
The best teacher at the U. He will help you learn how to learn, and really think about physiology. It helped so much for the bio section of the mcat. His tests are conceptual like the mcat you will learn how to apply concepts about physiology to things you have never seen before. He is a great lecturer and make difficult material understandable.
Temme gets a bad rap for holding students accountable for really understanding content instead of memorizing useless information. Tests always have new material, but the concepts are the same so you just use what you know and you get an A. I've never had a better teacher in college.
Arguably the best professor I've ever had! It's because he teaches you how to THINK, not how to memorize. It's a tough class, no doubt; not like normal classes or teaching styles. You either love it or hate it. I loved it, and learned LOADS. He cares passionately about the subject and about your success. Tons of TAs to make sure you pass.
DO NOT TAKE PHYSIOLOGY FROM TEMME! He expects you to already understand everything HE knows about phys. He expects a lot and teaches very little. Class time is looking at pictures he created and believes makes sense to everyone and skips real material. He also will blame students for their lack of understanding and not consider his poor teaching.
It's definitely a tougher class, but the material is interesting and engaging. To get a good grade, you need to put in quite a bit of time and effort. A lot of my time is spent trying to understand what Temme wants on a quiz or test rather than actually reviewing material. It takes some time to adapt to him and the way he teaches and grades.
He will make you work for your grade, however, if you're interested in biology this is one of the best teachers to learn from.
He tries way too hard to try and make us "think" I do not want to think about little processors and dung beetles eating you know what. I want to learn about real biology please. I've asked many friends that have taken biology elsewhere (and passed with good grades) and they think his teaching is pointless and I'm not learning what I should be.
I hate this teacher he does nothing to help his students and gives you a f if you dont think like he does, not only that he tells you that you shouldn't be in the class if you dont get this and that. like what in the hell Im paying a ton of money to take this class to be told I don't have time for you and your not good enough i hate this teacher.
Temme is a good teacher, but he's just really annoying. He spends a lot of class time yelling at you to leave his class if you're not prepared to learn in the way that he wants you to learn. I had my phone out in class once, and he yelled at me, saying there was no way I was going to pass his class. I've gotten high scores on all his tests lol RIP
Temme has a very different style of teaching. There is little memorizing in this class. His hard tests are all based off of understanding ideas. GO TO THE TA SESSIONS, that is the only way I'm understanding anything. No homework, just pure studying and understanding. I occasionally read the book, only when I didn't understand something from lecture
I wanted to give Temme the benefit of the doubt since he is such a well liked professor, however I found him to be pretentious and quite frankly, a huge male genetalia. He's passionate about his field, yet that doesn't translate to being a good teacher, instead he just seems unapproachable.
I've read many reviews of Professor Temme implying that he does not teach biology. I found Temme's method of teaching to be wonderful. He taught me the core ideas of biology. If you are willing to learn the concepts then apply them, you will excel. If you just want to memorize a biology book and pretend you know biology, don't take this class.
He teaches in a different way but after a few weeks I got used to it and now I love how he teaches, you can tell he really has passion for the subject! TA sessions are essential to truly understanding. This class was tough but it is worth it to take.
I wish I liked him. He is super passionate about biology which is great. Only problem, his tests are not based on his lectures. And his quizzes are basically memorizing exactly what the TA's say or they will mark you down. I attended every lecture, did not read the book. I never found a good way to study for this class. Tests are crazy hard.
If you are looking for an easy class do not take it with Temme. If you are looking to learn and think about things in a whole new way, Temme is definitely the teacher for you! You will not be able to memorize your way through tests, you'll have to understand it; more importantly, you have to understand it Temme's way. Very interesting class though!
I wouldn't say I disliked him he was a nice guy, however this class was extremely difficult for me. The way he teaches is very confusing, its not your typical biology course, I personally would not recommend taking his bio class, it is possible to pass if you have a good biology background and study hard and meet w/ T.A.'s. Prioritize this class.
He wants you to think simple and that one event will lead to another then another, just like the Direct TV commercials. He also wants you to know the basic ideas and not memorize the little details. Going to the TA sessions is a must, since they grade the quizzes. Overall, he is a unique professor and hilarious. DO NOT FALL BEHIND ON THE READINGS!
The only reason people think Temme is a hard/terrible teacher is because he expects students to put in outside work by reading his book and going to TA sessions. Yes, his tests are hard but you can still get an A by doing well on core quizzes and vocab quizzes. Temme has taught me more than any other professor I've ever had. Take his class.
This class was hard. Temme can be really confusing and has high arbitrary requirements of his students. He rants a lot in class and feels unapproachable . Basically you have to study with the TAs before every quiz and exam to even do ok. His exams are brutal and require at least 10 hours of study each to get a decent grade. Don't take him.
Dave's classes are unlike most other classes in the sense that he is there for you to LEARN. If you want a class to just show up, memorize a bunch of stuff and regurgitate it on the exams, DO NOT take this class. Dave makes you think through everything he teaching. TA sessions are crucial for passing. TA's will save your life. My FAVORITE professor
Dave Temme is a different type of teacher. However, I loved him! He actually taught us the material in an attention-grabbing way, and I actually LEARNED the material. This isn't a memorization class, its a concept based class, and this helped me, despite the fact that my greatest strength is my short term memory. Be prepared to show up everyday!
Temme is great as a person. He knows he does his class differently, so he has TAs to help you. But let me just tell you, that it's just a Roll of the Dice. I went to almost EVERY TA sessions, and I heard WRONG information Many times. Which I had to correct, and got scoffed at. The tests are hard, English intensive, and my second language.
Temme makes the biology less science and philosophical. He has quizzes and tests, no hw. Did well on quizzes which were based on bio concepts. But did not do well on the tests which were more analytical thinking (similar to standardized testing) which was hard for me. I would say that you need to study to think like him and what he thinks to get A
The people that say that Temme's course is bad, did not get the grade they expected because they didn't work hard enough. Temme has not only taught me different ways to view the science of life, but he also taught me a lot about what education should be. This class is hard. You cannot just memorize things to get by, but the TAs are very helpful!
I loved professor Temme! He was absolutely wonderful. I didn't do well in the class, and that's completely on me because I didn't want to put in the effort. It is A LOT of work, but so worth it. TA sessions are a must, but they are extremely helpful. They will go over literally every question that will be on the quiz/test.
I truly would not recommend this class. It was ridiculously harder than it needed to be and you learn cool things but they truly do not seem necessary for a biology course. He basically has this whole idea in his head of what he wants, and if your answer is even a word off from what he thinks, you're docked.
This class was quite a challenge for me. Very different teaching style. Got a few laughs in the class. Go to the TA sessions always or you are fudged.
Temme is an interesting lecturer, but bases most of it on his book. Few times he says things that aren't in the book, but just go to a TA session you'll be fine. If you go to class regularly you won't need a book, but TAs help you understand material better and are basically the backbone of your knowledge for this class.
This class was honestly way too anal for me. You have to put in so much effort and time in order to get a decent grade. He rants during lecture, you have to go TA's to pass quizzes. Tests don't reflect the materials learned in class. Disliked this class. I don't recommend it unless you really enjoy torturing yourself to some extent.
TA sessions are a must! He teaches in a way that was hard for me to learn. His class is so eye opening. He teaches in a way that each thing builds on each other. If that makes sense. Lectures aren't boring, he is very lively and humorous throughout the lecture. He has study guides you can fill in during class, you can print or do in on a computer.
Dave Temme and Dave Carrier co-teach this course. I loved it. It was challenging but helped me think outside the box. So interesting for pre-health students. Learned a ton about modern and and evolutionary health. I highly recommend it. There are low-stakes quizzes every week and a couple "journals" due, which are simple. Take this course.
This class is tough, however if you read the text book, come to lectures, and go to TA help session you can pass this class vary easily. He teaches very different because he teaches so you understand the material and can visualize what is going on. Not as much memorizing.
He is unwilling to work with his students. If you can't get the "words" he wants you to use on the quizzes, you won't pass. He teaches in an idealistic way so if you like people putting ideas into your head he would be great but if you like facts to make your own ideas then this isn't the professor for you. He is very disrespectful and will yell.
I loved prof. Temme's class. It is a difficult class so if you're looking for an easy A, you won't find it here. Temme is focused on making sure every student understands the material and is staying on track. He can be harsh at times but he wants his students to succeed. No memorization in this class, all theory-based, so pay attention in lectures.
He is a 'tough love' kind of professor. This class is not an easy A, and he makes that very clear. His material gets pretty difficult after a few weeks, and he goes fast. My suggestion for studying for quizzes is to first struggle and learn it on your own, then go see the TAs.
Take his class only if you really want to learn! I had zero biology background and I thought biology was boring. But his class totally changed my mind. I love biology now. His lecture is SO fun and challenging. It pushes me to think a lot. I study hard and go to TAs for his class, and it totally worth it!

Couldn't ask for a more inspiring professor. If you love biology take his class
Temme is probably your stereotypical college professor. He seems really unapproachable and talks way over everyone's head. That being said he has helped me to understand concepts in the sciences (not just biology) that had stumped me for years, and his lectures are amazing. If you take his class it will be extremely hard, but extremely rewarding.
Read the textbook throughout the class and dont wait untill 2 days before the exam. LOTS of information and very detailed. dont take this class if youre not a science major. TA sessions are helpfull, you wont pass the class if you dont go to them.
Temme took so much time telling us he wasn't going to waste our time and how good a professor he is that he frequently wasted our time. He didn't want us to memorize things, just think it through but you have to memorize how to think like Temme because he doesn't make it easy to get the base info needed to analyze or make a critical assesments
This was the most AMAZING class!!! One of the best professors I've ever had.
Temme believes in what education should be. He isn't going to just give you an A for not learning anything. He teaches in such a way that you will actually learn concepts and not forget them. He is a solid teacher, not perfect, but definitely what other professors should be like.
Dave Temme and Dave Carrier joint teach this class. It is straight forward and really interesting. The class purpose is to force you to rethink nutrition and medicine, which it does effectively. Dave Temme is just a really good man. I have a lot of respect for him as a person.
First, this class is going to be hard no matter what professor you take it from. Second, those who disliked this class expected to do little work and still receive an A. Temme wants to challenge you to think in ways you never have before. At first I hated it, but now I use this thinking in every day life. Temme is amazing and I highly recommend him
Temme's class is very unique. Your entire grade comes from vocab quizzes, memorization-based core quizzes, and application-based tests. It can be very hard to figure out the exact phrasing he wants. I relied very heavily on the TA sessions before every test and quiz, and I honestly learned much more from them than I did from Temme himself.
Temme is interesting in class but the material that he covers will not be on the test. He may say one sentence, such as "the gall bladder is important," and test you all about it. It is ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY that you see the TAs because they teach the material that will be on the test. Tests/quizzes will determine your grade, nothing else.
Dave is a very tough tester. His questions will come out of left field and totally blind side you. He will ask questions about things that were breezed passed in class. His TA's are hit and miss. Some of them are very helpful and others have no idea what is going on. Make sure you find a good study group.
Temme obviously thinks very highly of himself. He's very narrow-minded on how things should be learned, and it's his way or the highway. Tests don't reflect class, and TA's do all of the teaching. Also very demeaning and disrespectful to students as well as other faculty. As an entry level biology course it should have been more straightforward.
Dave teaches biology conceptually. He teaches concepts, then expects you to be able to apply those concepts to a scenario or story given on the test. The TA sessions are very helpful, but if you aren't wanting to put in extra time outside of the lecture, don't take the class.
This was my 2nd class with Dave, and just like the first feels like a giant game of "guess what I'm thinking!". Dave's teaching style (which consists of arrogance, yelling and failed attempts at fostering "critical thinking") mainly helps you learn how to guess his answers than learn the material. Test questions will look nothing like lectures.
Decent teacher. He gives good lectures, on subjects he's very passionate about, so he makes them interesting. However, his philosophy is that he wants to make his students "think." So his tests are unnecessarily confusing because of that. Tough class, especially when the TA's don't know all that much. But he gives a curve at the end.
Dave was a great professor, but in class, it was hard to grasp every concept that he gave us. It was like class was a huge cram session every day.
The TA sessions were essential to passing the class and core quizzes. Temme's test were insanely hard and confusing because he wants his students to "think". Therefore, there is nothing you can do to properly prepare yourself for the exams. The lectures were great, but Temme didn't always explain everything which made it difficult to connect things
Temme is one of the worst professors at the U. Aside from his horrible testing style ( telling you to understand, not memorize, then marking internalized answers wrong), he teaches by yelling, trying to get you to finish sentences, and "dumbing things down". Do not ask for clarification, he will only get mad at you for asking. Avoid taking!
Dave's class is all about teaching you how to think about concepts and then writing tests which test if you are able to think about these concepts. After taking Dave's class all my other biology classes have been much easier to think about. TA sessions are essential but if you go to a few they give you all the answers to the quizzes.
His exams are insanely hard, you can go through every handout, note, and TA session, but nothing will fully prepare you for his exams. He never responded to my emails, & when I went to his office hours he made me fell like an idiot for even asking what I asked, "you're problem is a lot bigger if you're asking me this. You should know that by now."
His exams are like nothing else. I had him for both biology and Physiology. Despite going to the TA's, studying for hours upon hours, and recording lectures, I still had too low of a grade to be accepted to nursing school.
TAKE HIS CLASS! Though some don't like him cause he stresses understanding rather than rote memorization, I can't thank him enough for how he has helped me learn to think. Had him for bio & phys- worked hard in both and amazing to see the dots connect and understand the stories. Don't let the other reviews scare you- if you work hard u can do well
Amazing class- participate in class to help make material stick. Go to him or TAs to clarify questions. Keep up by reviewing notes/concepts daily. Daily rewrote lecture notes into my "toolbox" notes. LOOK FOR THE PATTERNS! Read Silverthorn occasionally- don't need to buy. Key to class- study group, meet regularly to review and discuss the stories.
Temme thinks very highly of himself. He is a great source of knowledge in Biology. This being said this has possibly been my worst experience in the Biology department while at the U. This is an experimental class with few guidelines/direction. I had heard of Temme... it's all true. Journals were a nightmare! Avoid this class if you can. Wish I did
I have taken class from Temme twice and both times have been the absolute worst experience. I took intro my freshman year then thought things would be different with him my junior year with human phys but he offers no help. Unless bio is your strong suit and it comes naturally, learn from my mistakes, do not take any course with him.
Unlike most bio classes, he really teaches concepts, rather than just asking for rote memorization. He's a great instructor and human being and he changed my worldview. I also learned a ton. Honestly, my friends in nursing school come to me for help now. It's not an easy course, but I feel that the effort I put in was really worth it.
This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. You will not pass by just memorizing the material in class. You have to really understand and be able to apply on exams. However, I really did love this class. I learned A LOT. If you're looking for an easy A this is not the class though.
This was one of the best classes I have ever taken. I felt like I had learned so much applicable information at the end of this class and was fully prepared to take pathophys in the spring. Not only did I learn so much, I enjoyed every class because Temme lectures in such a engaging way.
VERY specific teaching style. Good if you're an independent thinker
He has really grown on me over the semester. The last class was today, and I was actually sad to leave. I began the class with, frankly, hating it and thinking it's the hardest thing ever. I left appreciating his lecture/teaching-style so much more. Like he says, you will not change without struggle. And, boy, did I struggle. Be ready to work.
As a person hes amazing but teaching wise i learned more from spending hours over the book and at the weekly TA sessions. If you are looking for a decent grade i recommend just taking it at the sandy location.
Lectures are extremely unorganized. Very confusing professor and the learning environment is extremely stressful. Not a good choice if you like to take time to process things. Go to every TA session you can or it'll be hard to pass. While taking a quiz he shouted to the whole class: "if u knew what you were doing you'd be done by now." #Neveragain
Don't take this class. The lectures are unorganized, and he comes up with things on the spot it seems. Hard to follow and write down what he says, so when those things come up on the exam you're left wondering whether you even learned that. I have gotten A's in all other bio classes but this one. He is rude and his exams are out of this world.
Very smart professor, but his class was horrible. It's like he doesn't want you to pass. His lectures are confusing and sometimes hard to follow. He only grades quizzes and tests, so if you do poorly on those you are in trouble. His tests are not straight forward, but the quizzes are a little more doable. Unfortunately I will be retaking this.
The worst professor I have ever had. He is completely disrespectful to his students constantly saying how "if this isn't in your toolkit, I don't know why you're even here" and he will even yell when someone answers a question incorrectly during lecture. He is completely unapproachable, and will tell you you're going to fail. 0/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND
Temme gives amazing lectures, some of the best and most interesting in the entire biology department. He certainly knows his stuff. That being said, he comes off as unapproachable and is often rude to his students. He is also very set in his own opinions and likes to insert his ideology into the curriculum. TA sessions are essential to pass.
While this professor is known to be extremely difficult he is an incredible professor. You will feel like you understand nothing but once the class is over you realize just how much you actually learned and retained (a lot). This professor values application and critical thinking rather than memorization so tests are HARD and you must use the TA's.
Go to one library study session a week and I promise you will do well. It's a fantastic class; Temme is a fantastic lecturer. He makes physiology intuitive. Very little memorization. If you learn the few, key concepts each unit that he tells you will be on the test, you'll ace the class.
Expects you to know everything he does NOT teach, and his TA's rarely got A's in his class. I find it sad that you can take a different professor and get an A with fair exams.
I was so afraid after seeing his rating on here, but honestly he is one of my favorite professors. He genuinely cares about what we discuss in class and gives us the tools we need to do well in class. Lots of TA sessions outside of class are available, and he is always staying after class to answer any questions. I totally recommend Dr. Temme!
If you want someone to give a bunch of stuff to memorize, take it from a different professor. If you actually want to work HARD and LEARN this subject, take this class. It can be very difficult and requires A LOT of study time to understand. That being said, here sits one of the best, most passionate, professors i have ever had. He's a true gem
Dave is a hilarious guy with a TON of knowledge. He is very passionate about physiology, this is his downfall. He expects everyone to be as passionate as he is. I had heard that his tests were difficult but that is an understatement. Make sure you can APPLY all the information he presents in different ways. His study questions are very helpful.
By far the best professor I have ever had. I left this class on the last day and realized what a valuable and deeply human course this was. Temme left a lasting impression on me and though he is seen as a tough professor, I would argue that if his class doesn't make you want to dig deeper than you should find another professor.
Dave is extremely unapproachable and often rude. He thinks very highly of his own opinion and tries to spread his personal beliefs in order to make you a critical thinker. Isnt lenient about personal circumstances at all, and will pawn you off on a TA if you need help. He basically acts like youre a dumb inconvenience to him.
Professor Temme was very interesting, engaging, and accessible. However, his tests were the most difficult thing I have ever done in any course. I studied 30 hours a week for this course alone, attended every lecture, and couldn't achieve higher than a 50% on any test. I dropped because I couldn't keep up (and biol has always made sense to me).
Dave is a good guy but an awful teacher. he has one way of teaching and doesnt stray. he knows he has to curve the class because so many people dont do well. lectures are choppy and confusing and he doesnt provide enough information in lecture to do well. lots of outside studying is required to do exceptional.
Tests are really hard and doesn't really outline what is needed to be studied
This professor was very difficult to understand what exactly he was teaching or explaining. Professor never fully defined or outright explained the functions of certain processes in a clear manner and is difficult to follow. He often explained several concepts and cellular functions at once. Exams ask questions not covered in lecture.
In any course, you have to figure out the professor's thinking style and apply it to exams. In Temme's case, his course is purely conceptual. Find the concept in exam questions and apply it. There is always something he mentions in lectures to back up his logic, so write down everything he says. This class makes you think & gave me new perspectives
I took the online lab and it wasn't terrible. The syllabus has parts copied from the previous semester so the objectives were unclear at some points, but the TAs could clear it up. The assignments allow for a lot of creative freedom. He provides videos trying to explain the concepts and sends out weekly annoucements. I'd take it again if needed.
His teaching style is unique because he tries to get students to use their "learning toolbox" and apply concepts to specific mechanisms of physiology, other than blindly memorizing every single mechanism. This made learning and preparing for the tests much more difficult because he would ask about mechanisms he never even mentioned in class.
Ive never been able to nap before taking this class. Thanks to the online lectures, my sleep schedule has never been better But actually, this class is strictly conceptual. His lectures are hard to follow and he is not concise or direct. Hes very knowledgeable but doesnt convey that very clearly.
This class is easily the hardest course in college I've ever taken and I've done it all, it also doesn't help that it's online. I am currently failing the course with less than a 60% even though I have put so much effort into the class thus far. There is no homework, just tests and quizzes with no leniency in grading.
No textbook required and his lectures area all over the place. This whole class is conceptual and it's fine for certain people, but not for people who are better at learning with patterns, structure, and organization. You're only graded on quizzes and exams and nothing else. I don't recommend this class from him, great person, terrible professor.
This class was horrible. This semester he did this thing where you watch the lectures online and then come to class time to review the study questions. He only went over what he thought would be important and half the time it was not on the exam. He grades things extremely hard. He only grades tests and quizzes so good luck!
This class was so bad... I would give it a 0, but that's not possible, so I'll give it a 1.
This class is very tough. David is okay but sometimes him talking doesnt help. If you wanna get through this class, try to stay on top of videos, talk to TAs and make a study group. My study group is what saved me, as well as doing the questions at the end of each of the notes he gives. If you can answer those you may do okay
I really liked this professor. Honestly if you don't give the class your all, you won't pass. I gave this class my 85% and still got a B. However, there were days I studied so much and didn't do well because I didn't grasp concepts adequately. I would suggest to do active recall as the study method and prepare to STUDY EVERY WEEKEND.
He teaches things in complicated ways. He spends time on unimportant subjects. It is more important to him that we figure out how to word things in the way he wants us to and understand things the way that he does than actually understanding the concepts.
Professor Temme really wants his students to succeed but you have to apply yourself. It's really important to stay on top of the videos. It helps to hear the information once before class and then have him explain it again during class. It is also really helpful to use your own life/experiences to help study since you are studying about yourself!
This professor's quizzes are true and false. This may seem appealing, however, he words them in a way that is confusing and either answer can be interpreted so that they could be true. One word will make it so one answer is wrong and another is true.
The only thing that matters in this class are the last four tests, and they are nearly impossible. I asked him many times to clarify his quizzes, and he gets very defensive if you have a question about his work. He thinks that failing is the only way to succeed in this class. This class is a big deal and to have him as a teacher is disastrous.
Prof Temme takes an approach to learning I believe all professors should. I have noticed that many folks who aren't happy with his teaching philosophies also tend to dislike real learning. This isn't a class where students can regurgitate memorized buzzwords. Temme wants you to give yourself space to learn and love it. 10/10
Dr. Temme has a different approach to physiology. Rather go deep on the math or chemistry involved, he's more big picture. He focuses on the "stories" of how/why things work. You are graded on just quizzes and tests, which can be difficult if you haven't picked up on some of the nuances of the topics. I do recommend getting the textbook though.
Dave was a terrible professor. He would go on tangents that had nothing to do with the exam. It was never clear what we would be tested on, and when you got your test back, it was unclear why you were docked so many points. When I went to class he would say "I'm not going to go over the details, the details are in the videos"
His entire class is just a mess, you can tell he doesn't care anymore. He gave 5 assignments and graded them harshly, the best part is he never gave feedback. I had A's in all my others classes but couldn't ever figure out what he wanted. I tried emailing him and no response. Temme if you are reading this, do us all a favor and retire.
The class is quite difficult and the material is hard to fully comprehend. He does things so specifically and it is near impossible to adapt to how he wants you to think and understand things. He seems to be a well meaning guy but I found it very hard to succeed in the class.
Temme would act as if we were a group of students that only takes the easy way out because of covid. He always said that our test scores were low because we didn't try instead of taking accountability for his subpar teaching. Get ready to watch 12 hrs worth of videos per week, because you will be constantly pausing the video to write something down
Lectures are lame both online and in-person; although inperson is not worth it as he has online lectures which cover the exact same material with better pacing, he yaps too much. No hw, only quizzes which u can use as study questions. Tests are not too bad but sometimes he harps on weird material for too long and will test on it.
David Temme is terrible and doesn't truly care about the learning aspect for his students. Instead, his lectures are basically himself going on tangents about things that are never on the exams. You can't ask questions about quiz questions if it questions his knowledge on the subject. It was always a "I'm right, you're wrong" attitude.
Temme is a horrible professor. His lectures are long and lacked substance. He tends to talk about irrelevant topics. You will need to self-teach the curriculum. You will rely heavily on the TAs and study groups. Majority of students do poorly in the class, unfortunately. When feedback is requested, he reprimands - so just go to the TAs.
You have several hours of long lectures to watch each week before class, pausing them every couple of seconds to write stuff down. But, if you take good notes and attend each class, you will do good on his exams. You have to learn to think like him. For exams, STUDY THE QUIZZES -You will succeed. Hes tough, but he knows his stuff.
I've taken multiple classes by this professor. His classes, more than any others, shaped me and my leaning experience. Anyone who's giving a negative rating is probably just complaining because they're unwilling to put in the work and struggle required to internalize the concepts taught. If you want to truly learn and not just memorize, go!!!!!!!!!
worst prof ever. I hated this class. he was an awful prof. makes you watch hour videos before classes.
I love the way how prof Temme teaches physio, but since it's a very unique teaching style not everyone loves it. Make sure you go to as many TA sessions as possible. Don't get scared by him when he said you'll fail because you didn't take 2000 level bio before this class. I got a C for my general bio but ended up doing fine in this class.
I LOVED physiology with Temme. A lot of people complain about his teaching style, but it really worked for me. He leads funny, engaging, and informative lectures, and even though there is no textbook, there is content to supplement the lectures. The wording on questions is a little confusing, but if you understand the material, it's really not bad.
Professor Temme's teaching style is unique, but if you engage with it, you can do well. The online lectures are lengthy, so use unstuckstudy ai or other tools to stay focused. Work closely with TAs and study groups - they're key to succeeding in this challenging but rewarding class.
Worse class I have ever taken at the U. He has online lecture that he made during COVID that you are going to watch and get 95% of your information from before going to his real lecture where I got absolutely nothing out of it. The smallest details he says in lecture or on the online lectures have a fair chance of being on your exam. Just no.
His teaching style is just awful, the pre-class lecture videos could be covered in 10 minutes. But, he stretches them out to almost an hour sometimes talking about stuff that "is not important", but will definitely come up on the test. There are very few opportunities to actually test your understanding before the tests come up.
This class is a mess. He gives you "lecture videos" to watch before class, which are just recorded Zoom meetings from covid. Class is basically pointless because Temme just rants on about irrelevant topics and repeats everything said in the lecture videos. It honestly sucks because the content is very interesting and fun to learn. #It'sTimeToRetire
Prof. Temme is a great person, makes me laugh in lectures and seems to care about what he teaches. With that said, his course structure is all over the place, he highlights his belief on the'big story' for 90% of the class and skims over important data, and then tests you on the details. This class revolves Temme's beliefs rather than the science.
Course is organized poorly and exams reflect that. His content is not based in science, but instead his own opinions. He words questions with such poor grammar that it is challenging to understand what he is asking. He is far from qualified to be teaching a biology class, nevermind physiology. Sad since the material is interesting and important
Learned more from AI and YouTube than I did from Temme. Word of advice: Use UnstuckAI to summarize the long lecture videos and use ChatGPT to test yourself and explain more difficult concepts. I kept showing up to lecture thinking it would be useful, yet every time I was let down. It doesn't seem like David even likes teaching. Have fun.
Hands down the worst teacher I have ever had the misfortune of taking. He uses a bunch of true or false questions that have the worst wording I have ever seen in any class, he will try to make one word in a paragraph of text wrong to trick you. You will have no chance to practice any of the material before the test to check your understanding.
I enjoyed physiology with Temme, his lectures are engaging and informative. Despite what others say, he makes physiology significantly easier to conceptualize. I watched the videos on 1.5x and took notes, attended every lecture, and went to a TA session weekly. I'll likely make an A in the class, and I'm not particularly bright. You can do it too.
If you thought anatomy was a pain.. Very content heavy. You basically have to take all the notes prior to lecture to even understand what he is saying in lecture. DO THE PRE CLASS NOTES can't stress this enough. Be prepared for lots of content and for it to be learned quick. Good luck.
By far one of the most difficult classes I have had to take. Not due to the course content but because of the professor. After every quiz and exam we were berated. If you're a pre-med/ nursing student he loves to make digs that really lower morale and make you feel stupid. Lecture was a waste, he said everything in the videos verbatim. Beware.
If you watch and take notes on Temme's lecture videos before class, his in-class lectures will become very slow and boring because he just repeats everything in his videos. If you don't watch Temme's lecture videos, his in-class lectures will become overwhelming because he doesn't explain everything that's on his videos.
Temme is a berating individual. Spends half the class telling you how far behind you are. He's an incompetent lecturer and often jumps around and makes stringing ideas together difficult. Often goes off on tangents. Would recommend only watching the videos as theyre better and easier to understand then his jumbled lectures.
Temme reminds me of a wizard who gives you whimsical side quests. I only attended class to pick up my exams. His online lectures were all I needed. Granted, I took this class senior year, so I had a strong background in biology/anatomy/biochem. He is much more concept-focused/tying things together (real learning), which I genuinely appreciated.
I dont know how this man still has a job. So mean, terrible at teaching the concept, and hates his students. Genuinely so frustrated that my expensive tuition went towards this class because it was so terrible. If I could go back I would take in Sandy.
His test questions are difficult but they are not as crazy as some students might say. If you are taking this class because you really want to learn about the core concepts for future healthcare careers then this is the class for you. His tests are easy if you focus on understanding not just memorizing, which is why many students struggle.
this was my favorite class ive taken at the U. the way this class is taught is by UNDERSTANDING concepts NOT memorizing. if you are truly interested in phys and how ur body works then this is the class for you. lectures were fun and interesting but most of the learning for exams is done on own thru videos and TA sessions. crammed for exams did fine
If you want to spend 4 hours a week being yelled at that you're behind and you're the problem, take Temme. He spends a lot of time ranting about things that have nothing to do with the lecture content, berating his students, and repeating everything that he already stated in the pre-recorded lecture videos. Don't waste your time and tuition money.
I spent an entire week in the library practically teaching myself the units for the upcoming exam because he doesn't teach a thing. He just talks at you and doesnt explain anything. the lecture notes are horrible because he doesn't even know how to write with a courser so the slides that he talks about are blank.
Dave Temme is hands down one of the worst professors I've ever had. It's evident he finds a lot of his motivation for teaching in self-righteous belittlement and very little in the success and well-being of his students. He consistently preaches true effort and understanding, but practices a form of lazy teaching I didn't even think possible. AVOID
Temme is an interesting guy. I have spoken to him one-on-one before, and I do like him as a person. However, as a professor, I am not a fan. He has a tendency to yell at a lecture hall over a multitude of reasons regarding that it is our fault we aren't learning. He is well educated and post good online lectures, but I would'nt recommend this class
Class is based on 4 exams and our weekly quizzes. Temme himself is a good, smart guy. However I am not a fan of his teaching style. He yells at our class a lot and is hard to understand in lecture. He is passionate about his work, but I don't think he is caught up with how kids learn now a days.
One of the worst professors I've had. After the drop date, he told my section quiz scores wouldn't be included in our final grades (33% of final grade), due to issues with people "cheating," yet all quizzes are open note? Future sections, be weary that your grade will probably be solely dependent on notoriously hard exams. Consider other options.
Doesn't show material well, had to group with students and get a tutor to help understand his class. Doesn't let us study during class, yells at students for not paying attention and doesn't try to explain or slow down his work. I thought teachers were suppose to be caring and helpful, clearly not this one
Every week we have to watch 5-6 videos and take detailed notes BEFORE sitting through a two-hour lecture twice a week. It takes an insane amount of time just to get the notes done, let alone actually learn the material. The lectures feel like a waste of time because he just repeats what he said in the videos, except in a more confusing way. Awful.
Worst professor I've had so far. You are expected to take notes on 5 hours of pre recorded videos a week, and the lectures are often spent yelling at students for not understanding what he is explaining in those videos. The exams are the only thing that affect your grade and are very difficult, mostly due to the horrible wording of each question.
Temme takes some getting used to. This class is about UNDERSTANDING, not memorization. Once you realize that, you will be totally fine. I highly recommend going to every single office hour and watching the videos. Lectures aren't that important in terms of content, but David is worth showing up for. No need to take this class at Sandy.
Dave is hilarious. His class is pretty weird the way it's set up, but if you do your work, you will pass no problem. Exams are kind of extra; he rambles on in his questions but he is a fair grader. Lectures are optional, but I went every day because Dave is just an awesome person with good stories. It is a very hard class, but extremely doable.
The class and the content is hard enough and Temme does not make it easy. There are lecture videos from 2020 posted to Canvas yet in class he blabs on tangents not included in test material. Does not hold office hours, and grades are not input into Canvas so you don't know where you stand in the class even if you pick up exams in person.
Worst professor I've ever had. 6+ hours of online lecture and notes BEFORE 2 hour lectures twice a week. Grading based only on poorly written exams, time in class spent yelling at students for their lack of knowledge on the subject, extreme lack of material resources, no text book. DO NOT take this class, you will regret it Dave is the antichrist.
Lectures are hard to understand and difficult to follow. He spends a lot of time in lectures yelling at the students. Exams are 100% essay questions. There are no assignments to help boost your grade. He does not provide practice exams to help students study, which I have never experienced before from a professor at the U. Take any other professor.
frustrating beyond words
Dave is an interesting professor nearing the end of his teaching career. He has great insights into physiology and solid lectures though the online and in-person content is somewhat repetitive. Exams are long answer, easy to do well on if you show understanding of "stories" and big-picture ideas.
