Totally non-cooperative, ego-ful
he is the man, a little bit cocky...take him
Really good teacher, fun to listen to.
If you're looking for a football coach to teach you History, he's the man. Easy class, but the stance he takes on history is straight out of the John Madden handbook.
He is not helpful and he doesn't give any classwork so there are no other grades besides tests and quizzes. All he does is lecture and all you do is take notes. A very boring clas.
One of the best Hist teachers ive ever had. If you communicate w/him he'll love you. Very down to earth guy.
He is great to listen to!
this teacher is paul robert darrows uncle. Tengwall is cool
Ethics with Tengwall is stimulating, especially if you get a good class... Expectations are clear: lots of reading, writing and lively discussion.
This guy is a huge jerk - you will regret taking a class with him. He is extremely unfair and he doesn't even listen when people talk.
He lectures with very little student interaction. His test consists of writing a very long essay and 3 "short" answers. If you try to get an 'A' in his class, then good luck you will need it. Luck and a great memory.
He looks like Gene Hackman.
I had him for a telecourse, and although it might be a little boring after awhile, his dry humor made me laugh. I'd porbably recommend him and/or take another class with him. Though he does require a lot of proper essay answers and labeling maps.
Your entire grade comes from four essay tests and three map quizzes. He has a definite idea of what he wants. At first I studied like crazy and didn't do well but by the end I figured him out and didn't do more than review my notes on the way to class and still got A's. All around, I liked him.
awesome teacher!
He was a very interesting professor! I feel that I learned a lot! I would not recommend taking his class if you are not a good writer. His tests are all essays and he is strict on grading. His map quizzes are very simple and can help boost your grade. Very good at teaching. My only complaint is that he does not leave comments on essays.

"did i ever tell you kids about vietnam?"
I love the Tengwall. He is one of the best professors I have ever had. However, it was his group that went to London. Best time ever! Take the trip, it is worth it and you learn a lot.
If you take his class online, make sure you are ready to write - a LOT! It was an awesome corse though. I really enjoyed it and once I got the hang of how he liked his papers, i loved his class.
excellent lecture style, captivating. tests are ok if you study for them. one of the best professors i had at aacc.
Very good teacher, be prepared to take notes though. Lectures fairly interesting. If you miss a class all the lectures are on video tape by him in library (he still makes the same jokes in lectures that he did 7 years ago) there are map quizzes and Tests are essay only but he gives you 3 topics to choose from
Learned alot
I learned a lot from this professor, however be prepared to WORK hard. You need to take notes during class and he likes to give writing assignments. His pace for the summer course does not leave much time for the weekends fyi because your busy writing papers! I would recommend him but Only for people who are willing to work hard , NO ez A's here!
Online course, lots of papers (17 each 3-4 pages long), no tests or exams. I enjoyed the subject and as long as you got the work done, you pretty much can determine your own grade (point system)
Just about to finish online class. 17 papers, no tests. Papers are expected to be 3-4 pages. Once you figure out how he likes the papers, you will most likely get a 20/20. The first 3 papers I got 18/20's. From then on I received 20/20 every time. Great class, you learn alot because you have to read in depth to write the paper.
He was the best teacher I had. I loved his class and it was so exciting. He was so loud and you could hear him a mile away, but he drilled the info in really good
Professor is amazing, funny and intelligent with a true passion for what he teaches. I took him as a telecourse class and was one of the only people there but he didn't drop the course and still had the meetings. His tests are strait from the tele lectures and he grades fairly. By far on of the best instructors I have ever had! TAKE HIM
This was a great on-line course. Prof. Tengwall is a fair grader, but he does not provide a lot of feedback on your papers. You can't help but learn a lot in this class since you have to write 17 papers which require you to read the texts. If you really want to learn about the history of Western civilization and you like to write, take this class.
Tengwall is a great teacher. He makes you work, but not too hard. You end up learning even more than expected. Sarcastic sense of humor and passionate about his subjects. Don't be an ass and he'll love you. Took 111 with him- had to take 112 as well. Best teacher at A2C2
Best teacher ever. Class is always an adventure and always enjoyable.
Awesome Teacher for Western civ 1 and will see him for Western Civ 2
Took online class, as long as you don't mind writing papers you'll like the class. Extrememly easy for online class, no tests or quizzes just writing papers. Great class!
Dr.Tengwall is a freakin genius. He knows everything and if you ever miss class you can watch his lecture videos in the library. His knownledge is so good, that you don't even need the text to go back and look things up. I know now all the countries and capitals of Europe. His tests were not the easiest, but if you studied then you had a chance!
Had him for Western Civ 1 and 2. Amazing classes. Exceptional teacher! Inspired a genuine interest in the subject. Funny, and sarcastic lectures. Take this professor!!
To be fair, the outline to his class for online students is fair...but truth be told, he does not like online classes and it showed. There was a mistake in the syllabus which was not discovered until about 2-3 weeks in to the class. Plus he was a bit snug for my taste. I still got a B in the class, but he could be kinder to those who work FT.
I just want to know if anyone has taken the trip to london england and if it was easy to get a good grade? How hard is the course work? Are the journals hard? are they graded harshly?
For those interested, the trip to London is incredibly easy and very fun. You write about what you did that day in your journal entries and that's all. You'll easily get an A.
i took him over the summer semester and he did things differ from how he usually does. we had ZERO tests!! i swear! the downside: you were graded on class participitation, which meant that you HAD to read EVERYNIGHT. if not he would know, and you wouldnt get points for that day. i LOVED him and recommend him:D ((at least for the summer))
It's fun to watch him get mad at people who talk in class.
I took HIS 111 with him on online. We had to write 17 3-4 page papers and let me tell you, it was exhausting. The material was hard to understand and I have NO idea how he wanted his citations done because I only got them perfect on 4 papers. I did come out with an A though so I can't complain. It wasn't hard, it was just very time consuming.
Tengwall is awesome. One of the best teachers I've ever had. He knows his stuff and is really passionate about what he teaches. Really great professor. Highly recommend.
Great teacher, Great class...Its been a few months and I'm still talking about what I learned in this class. All the material will stick with me for a lifetime.
Best professor I've had in a long time. Really knows his stuff and teaches in a way that makes you really interested in the subject. Enjoyed his class and highly recommend.
Took this class online. Was easy as long as you read and have time to research some of the subjects on your own. READ the syllabus carefully especially about citations, it was confusing. But overall the class was easy and there is no final!!
No feedback was provided on papers so you didn't know how to improve. That is if they were returned. The tests were difficult to get done in the time period he gave you if you work. They were released at 7 am and due by 7 am 48 hours later. Would not recommend him for an on-line class again.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! Do not take this class online. He has 26 lectures for you to listen to, and each is at least 45 minutes long. He is the worst professor I have ever had. No feedback on essays. This is an all essay class, and he grades poorly. I do not know how I will get through this class, and I have a 3.4 gpa. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH TENGWAL
He doesn't help at all!
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE.
DO NOT TAKE ONLINE!!!! Just like the posts below mine, he is NOT helpful at all. When asked a question he doesn't respond and his grades are ridiculous! Would not recommend to anyone!!
One of the profs ever! Loved his lectures. Organized and easy to understand. Made me love history even more.
The lectures were easy to understand, but he does not communicate with online users. The main textbook is not even used, save your money and just watch the online lectures. Take alot of notes and spout his opinions right back at him in 2 or more pages and you will ace this class.
I took his class online and if you use the outlines he provides to structure/write your papers then acing the class should be easy. The textbook is pretty much useless since the lectures/notes don't always match up. I didnt watch any of the lecture videos until I had to do a paper which worked out fine just take his works and put it in a paper
tengwall was good very effective note system if you buy the book (which he wrote) its really easy to follow along. tests are all writing but if you hit the key points he goes over in test review its easy. very passionate about history and knows a lot about everything
I took this class online and wound up failing. Read the syllabus very carefully. Be prepared to receive the lowest grades on papers you've ever received without any feedback. I'll miss my 3.8 GPA.
WORST ONLINE TEACHER EVER. HIS LECTURES HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIS EXAM QUESTIONS. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Took online. I'm not sure how other profs teach this class but DO NOT take him if you aren't a strong writer. Your grade is based on all 3-4 page essays. You have to watch his lecture videos he posts and then basically summarize them in order to receive a decent grade. I found this very tedious but passed because I'm a good writer.
Terrible teacher, he doesn't help you at all! If you must take his class, just write down his opinions and you'll do fine (DO NOT have your own opinions) Would not reccomend. He made me loose all interest in history.
I absolutely loved this class! Definately a highlight in my schedule. Tengwall is easygoing and really has a passion for history. I have learned so much from him, and he goes the extra mile to make sure you understand!
Had no interest prior to taking this course. It was my first online class I had taken and I loved it. I had trouble writing the 4 age papers every week because he gives you 2 days to watch the lecture and complete the paper which it difficult. Grades very fair and if you watch the lectures you will pass.
The teacher wrote his own book and has been teaching forever. The man knows his stuff and his classes are not to bad. He tells you want you need to study for the test. But he grades the test very hard. He wants every little detail in them. you take 4 test during the semester and those equal your grade for the year. I wouldn't take it again.
To make a long story short, he is the WORST teacher when it comes to online classes. His essay questions are not very descriptive and the student will later get penalized for not including information that he never specified that he wanted in the paper. I would never take one of his classes again!
Dr. Tengwall gives some really good lectures but having to write two papers a week was pretty strenuous. Learned a ton though.
if you are going to take an online class, do not take it with him. his papers are not descriptive on what he wants and his lectures do not match what is in the textbook. he will penalize you for the way your papers and exams are written. it would be better to have tests and quizzes throughout, not a four page paper due every week.
He is horrible as an online teacher! He doesn't describe what you need for the papers and if you miss one tiny thing he takes off points.
He isn't going to hold your hand- read his syllabus and watch his lectures- that is where all the information you are going to need comes from. If you fail this class its because you didn't use the resources he provides for his students and if you take notes from his lectures you will have plenty of info for the 4 page paper every week.
Dr. Tengwell is an AMAZING Professor. He demands college level performance.Thorough notes from lectures and using provided outline for paper structure will guarantee a good grade. I spend about 5 hours a week on assignments for his online class and have an A. He does communicate well with online students but will not hold your hand.
I've taken 2 courses with Tengwall. He has been teaching for a while and knows what he's doing. Take detailed notes. Tests are an essay and short answers, always. Also gives map quizzes. No homework; just study. His lectures are recorded and stored in the library. The textbook is not necessary. Take advantage of office hours if you are struggling.
wishing i read these ratings before signing up for his online class. when it comes to his grading of papers he takes points off for very small things he will say the paper is on chapter 1&2 but thing take points off for not including something from chapter 3 that you arent aware you should of already read
Dude gives you absolutely no information on what is needed. He says write 3 short answers but the questions are one word.. No info at all, takes points off for not having all documents combined in same document, yet never instructed you to do this.. not helpful. big deal he has lectures, they are outdated and he is boring as hell.
Don't take this class if you're a full time worker. He gives you three days from 7AM two days prior to the due date, and then its due the third day by 7AM. Not really clear on his questions for the papers. You need an abundance of info but no outside info is allowed.
Boring
Take verbatim notes on his video lectures and then regurgitate it in essay format for the papers and exam. Not a lot of time to write the papers, but I just read the prompt and watched the video that pertained to the exam/paper prompt and I was fine. His grading is arbitrary. If looking for a quick online summer class, then take this.
Make sure you do the assigned readings. He likes all detail possible on essays. Dont short change yourself.
4 essay exams. Essays must be written properly (spelling, paragraphs, etc. must be correct). No HW just study. Very funny during lectures, always has a story to tell. He loves the subject. Would take again
2 papers a week and the assignments are not clear as to what he wants. Hard to get a good grade without putting serious time in. Not for someone juggling work and kids.
Great teacher who gave rousing and inspirational lectures. For a gen ed class i was really interested and learned alot though. I guess I view this class positively because it was fun but I still barely recieved an A. Had that not been the case I would be way more upset because his tests are essay only and he paints them in red.
I took his online class and like others are saying - his lectures are key. My textbook hadn't arrived until I was two weeks in the class but I was still receiving As on the paper only from using information on the lectures. He only introduces the subject of a paper 2 days before its due so the class takes A LOT of time each week. All essay based.
Wrote his own textbook and quite frankly it's not that good. Has you watch his lectures from the 90's (dated by his referencing of the ongoing OJ Simpson trials during one of them). And he wants a 3-4 page paper for every lecture he makes you watch. You basically regurgitate his lecture well enough and you get an A. No independent thought allowed.
Dr. Tengwall is very enthusiastic about history, and his lectures not only get you excited about historical events, he relates them to why and how they affect us today.
5-6 hours of watching his lectures every week. A 3-5 page, sometimes two, due every week. Does not give information on the topic of that paper until 48 hours before it is due for every paper.
Loud and obnoxious, but he knows his stuff. Pay attention in class and you can learn a lot. Fun class but tough, not an easy A regardless of intelligence.
He just makes you watch videos of himself from the 90's. Twice this semester he has put his grading in the middle of my last sentence and then accused me of ending my weekly 4 page essay mid sentence. Not willing to work with you if you're not lucky enough to not have to work. Only has essay topics open for 48 hours, but takes forever to grade.
I only took the first month of this class, due to a hospitalization that set me behind, but from what I experienced, Tengwall is one of the best professors I've ever had. There is no attendance policy, but you HAVE to show up to follow along, he add things in his lectures that aren't in the book. Also, he wrote his own textbook for this class: 10$
I took a course with Professor Tengwall quite some time ago. I now have a undergraduate degree and am working on my 3rd Masters degree. That I remember his lectures and think that he was one of the best instructors I've ever had tells you everything you need to know.
By far worst professor I've had. Feedback he gives is absolutely horrible. Takes points off for the smallest things. Essays are only available from 7am to 7am 2 days later, same as exams. Super boring lectures. Please don't take this professor, I saw the ratings and figured I could pass still.. I was wrong
Had him for a 2 week online Intro to philosophy class. A few weeks before, I got a concussion but was cleared to do the course..I explained this to the professor and at first, seemed like we was going to work with me. but not long after, he told me that "i should drop if I cannot read well".I was asking for a 1 day extension for the 1st few assign.
Great teacher-filmed his lectures for online classes too! Ppl complain, the lectures were made in the 90's but think about it, it's about ancient history, up to the point of the Renaissance in approximately 1550 AD. Nothing's changed, so who cares if they were filmed in the 90's?! It's the same info! Too many whiny opinions on this thread.
So I'm a 3rd gen student of Tengwall, and while I admit his class was challenging I enjoyed it. Definitely pays to watch the lectures and read the textbook, but the textbook is sufficient. Definitely a hard grader, for a subject that I normally excel in I fought for my B. Don't regurgitate as much as use factual ideas to help express your own.
class consists of him reading the textbook out loud, with occasional current political interruptions. Test are based off of non-descriptive essay questions that must be based partially on opinion, but can still be wrong or right??? Online lectures from the 90's, which is still the same info being taught today...
This was my first time taking a 2 week winter class and it was a breeze! As long as you don't mind writing papers that is. The material was very interesting and the professor gave good feed bag. Just make sure you read through the syllabus thoroughly so you know what is expected.
Online. His lectures were interesting, he's a great storyteller, but I think it's pretty tacky to just have the student watch his lectures from the 90's. My problem with him is the way he graded. His essay questions were so general but he would take off points for lack of detail. Grading seemed totally subjective but hey maybe that's humanities.
For such a vast area of topics he likes to make you write multiple papers on the same few topics. Says your papers do not include info when they do.
I haven't even finished this class and I'm already miserable. The amount of work aka papers and hours of video lectures is insane. DO NOT take this class if you are taking 3 or more classes because you will be drowning in work. 6 papers and an exam within the first two week?!?!
***DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE*** Absolutely one of worst online classes I've EVER taken. If you have absolutely nothing do all day this class might work for you. Even if you wanted to do your work ahead of time you cant cause its locked until a certain date and which you have a time from from 7am-7am to figure out what to read and write.
To provide background I received an A, which means I am not providing a bad review in retaliation. This instructor throughout the semester was constantly unreasonable in grading, lazy in providing feedback (it was as if he only quickly skimmed through the paper one time), and was not responsive to specific questions asked about the actual history.
He uses his own textbook, which is full of typos and malapropisms. He uses wrong terms frequently. (Yes, he has a Ph.D. in History and his language skills are not that good). I have a B.A. already and I found him to be full of himself and just not that smart. He wants people to repeat his lectures to him on tests, and to adopt his viewpoint.
I wanted to hate this class and him throughout the semester, but in the end I learned a ton and don't regret it. He's obnoxiously smart and he knows it. He is not easy (though graded MUCH more leniently by semester end). What is awesome is you don't have to go to class- he doesn't take attendance and you can watch lectures online from home.
Beware, this man is LOUD, he has a loud voice and isn't afraid to shares his thoughts, extremely loud. The textbook for his class is one that he wrote himself and is great. But you could only go to class once a week and pass. It would be better if you did attend his class, but he doesn't take attendance. I have no clue how he grades his papers.
Feedback on essays/grading is bad. Get ready to write TONS of papers and have them torn apart over completely random things. He wrote the textbook for the class and just wants it copy/pasted back to him. I got an A from him - but I don't know how, and by the end, I was so frustrated, I barely cared about the grade, I just wanted it to be over.
I got my first B in his class. The content is not hard, but his exams are only essays. He grades like an English teacher, so if you are not good at writing essays, stay far away from this class. He also grades hard.
The class is all essays. 6 papers that are 3-4 pages and 4 exams that consist of 1 paper that is 3-4 pages and 3 short responses about half a page long.
Took Tengwall's class online: Yes, it's work. I liked it and learned a lot. Furthermore, to counter all those who whine that he interweaves his opinions, he states that in the beginning of his HIS111 class, "Tengwall's interpretation of history" is how he put it himself. What teacher doesn't expect you to repeat what was taught?! Think about it.
Took Tengwall's last spring, 2018, there was a whole ton of lectures and papers to write in the very beginning: upwards of 5 or 6. Interesting class, Tengwall is a good story teller and is engaging to listen to. Yeah, lots of writing, he wants to see that you absorbed what he had to impart, do that, small smidgen of critical thinking and voila!
Took prof for short semester. Does not budge on late work at all even if submitted same day (due at 7am?)
Was very knowledgeable about the topics and he truly made history interesting
Taking a class, major bore. I hate history, and his teaching style doesn't help kinesthetic learners one bit... Textbook was cheap and used 100%, online lectures out the ying yang
Professor Tengwall does not balance the class grade out fairly for students. The grade is solely dependent on the map quizzes and exams (which are essays). There are no other grades or homework, only an extra credit paper that adds a Max 10 points to your grade. The lack of homework is truly a disadvantage to the student and less grading for him.
Took online, worst class I've ever taken. An excessive amount of papers, not necessarily hard but very time consuming. A lot of reading that you have to do for the papers. Also papers are only open for 48 hours so you can't work ahead and just have to hope they are unlocked on days you aren't busy, which conflicted greatly with my work schedule!
I took his class online and be prepared to do a lot of essays. The key is to pretty much write everything he said in the video back to him and you will get an A! Im awful at essays and not a fan of history but his lectures were fun and interesting because he knows his stuff. One of my favorite professors.
Tough grader but Dr. Tengwall is clear on what he wants in essays. I had a personal problem and he was so understanding and compassionate. Hes a great professor. Dont be afraid to talk to him if youre having trouble in the class!
Didnt like the professors grading or lectures. The lectures were outdated and the quality of the videos werent that great to view.
Took online class. Lectures were recordings from the 1990's. Homework consisted entirely of 10x 3-4 page papers, and written exams. You only have 48 hours to do the papers and tests, which sucks, but aside from the excessive writing, they weren't too difficult. Just put everything that was in the book in the papers and you'll get at least a B.
Tengwall's approach to teaching history is bizarre. His modern Eur. history class requires a textbook authored by Tengwall himself, containing no citations or bibliography and inaccurate historical info. When I went to him with questions, he was dismissive; additionally, his essay exam feedback is vague, unspecific, and hence relatively useless.
Dr. Tengwall's class is easily one of the worst/ least favorite classes I've taken in my years of college. Heres why: He is VERY lecture heavy. He also authors his own textbook, which is in my opinion, the worst textbook I've ever bought. Very dry and boring lectures. He seems to be annoyed when people ask questions. No powerpoints. Don't recommend
ALOT of lectures, but he puts a lot of thought into them and hes been teaching them for years. He will answer any question you have, but if its a question about the course itself and not the content of the course he will give you a very short and Kurt answer. Overall though I enjoyed having him and hope to take one of his classes in the future
Tengwall is an easy teacher who is caring and understanding. He doesn't give out any homework other than the occasion textbook reading and will not penalize you for being late or skipping class all together.
You would never know what to read until he opened the assignment which you only had 48 hours to complete. He also wrote the textbook for the class and the only way to get a good score on the assignments was to essentially copy and paste his thoughts from the textbook. Everytime I tried to put an idea in my own words I would get a low grade.
LOVED this class! No homework, just reading the book, which he wrote and listening to the lectures he pre-recorded. Professor Tengwall is very empathetic and understanding to students situations and is willing to work with you, meet after/before class, etc. Exams are easy, quizzes are on maps. Just READ the content and you'll pass w/ flying colors.
Rude and does not provide much clarification.
Professor Tengwall has good lectures and explains concepts very well and clearly, but that does not make up for the 10 essays and 4 written exams. Each essay I wrote had to be 6 pages to even get an A and took HOURS. The written exams were an all day assignment and I even took off work to have enough time to complete them.
This course is 10 papers worth 10 points each, and 4 exam papers worth 100 points each. You have to use lectures and a textbook which were both created in the 1990's. The class consists of a paper a week, with a few lectures and chapters attached to it. He prefers if you agree with the statements he made in the textbook, do that and you'll do fine.
easy courses.. I have completed four classes with him.. three As and one B. I was a C high schooler.
