Tschida is a nice guy and is always willing to explain lessons and answer questions. Rhetorical criticism isn't my cup of tea, but he is definitely a good professor.
Nice guy and very helpful. While rhetorical criticism isn't my favorite thing in the world, his enthusiasm makes the class survivable.
Nice enough person, but he seemed to be uncomfortable with questions about grading and the reasoning behind it. I hate politically based arguments which his quizzed contained on a daily basis. He has great passion and does not slack just because it is an intro level speech class. Tough grader, workload isnt too bad though.
He is a nice guy who clearly cares about the subject, but he is a really hard grader. I worked really hard on a group project. We spent probably 6 or 7 hours on our speech, and he gave us a 78%. This was common on all my speeches. He gives quizzes on readings that are kind of hard, but the workload isn't bad. Other professors are easier, take them.
He is a nice guy but he is a really hard grader. He isn't very approachable. I worked really hard on a group project. We spent probably 6 or 7 hours on our speech, and he gave us a 78%. This was common on all my speeches. He gives quizzes on readings that are kind of hard, but the workload isn't bad. Other professors are easier, take them.
Very hard grader on speeches no matter how hard you work. His way or the highway when it comes to speech topics and everything else. His classes are very boring and hard to go to. Avoid if possible!
A pretty awesome teacher, and a pretty easy class. Lots of easy points from in class write-ups, in case you don't do well on the tests (which are pretty easy anyway). I'd definitely recommend him for CJ105 because you do not have to do speeches and he makes the material really interesting. I'd definitely recommend him to a friend.
I would definitely recommend Dr. Tschida for CJ 105! He is great at explaining each subject to ensure that you understand each section. You do have to literally read every chapter in this class because of the weekly quizzes, but they really are not that difficult. To make up points, he does little in class assignments too. I recommend highly!
He is very enthusiastic and helpful!
AWESOME. Very helpful, enthusiastic, funny, and interesting. I looked forward to going to every class. HIGHLY recommended. He wanted me to become an Advertising minor.
Really neat guy, but he expects way too much time out of his students on assignments/tests that takes away from other classes.
I didn't really enjoy his class. A couple days were fun and class discussion was fun. He grades your papers very harshly and if you ask him questions or email he's not very helpful at all. It wasn't hard, but I didn't really enjoy this class. No need to avoid him or be scared, I just wouldn't suggest it.
I did not enjoy this class at all. He doesn't make the class interesting at all. its not a difficult class and I wouldn't say avoid him I would just say if you have other options take them instead!
Great Prof. More than just 3 exams. There are 2 page papers every couple weeks which are easy. Unit quizzes that are on D2L. Overall, good prof and highly recommend him!
His class is very boring but really easy. I didn't really take anything away from it. His grading on papers is stupid. He will add comments of stuff he thought we should include but wasn't in the directions. He just bothered me and going to class was such a waste of time. You have to go to each class because he gives you 2 points.
He kept it somewhat interesting with discussion and getting two points for writing an answer everyday. He makes you write 7 two page papers that are really easy and the tests come right from the online quizzes from each chapter. He makes the class easier by also having current event quizzes every week worth 5 points. Easy A.
He asks very poorly worded questions that you have to write essays and daily responses on. Overall it was an easy class but very boring.
The workload isn't bad at all. There are quizzes about once every two weeks that are tricky but they're online so you can look through the book. He is a tough grader and very specific about what he wants. He is helpful and approachable, but like I said, is very tough on his grading so if there is an easier professor, take that one.
Worst professor I've ever had. His course load is ridiculous for an introductory 3 credit class. His grading expectations for the papers are nearly impossible. The class is basically just him stating his opinions. I would not recommend taking him for any course.
I got nothing out of his class. This class is in no way related to communications/journalism. During the lectures he just tells us what his beliefs are and tries to manipulate you. NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS!
Dr. Tsuchiya is a great guy, and if you put in work, he is a very fair grader. I would definitely recommend taking him!
Tschida is a very friendly & funny guy. I dread public speaking but he made the class bearable. Lectures can get boring but he does his best to keep them upbeat. Only 5 speeches the whole semester, including final. He can be a tough grader if you arent careful. I would recommend him if you're just looking to meet your CJ requirement.
I took the Honors section of CJ 202 with this professor and it was my hardest class that semester. You do one group speech (50 minutes long), two individual speeches (each 10 minutes), and then an impromptu for the final (2 minutes). He is a very tough grader, but offers substantial extra credit along the way. The online book quizzes were hard.
He gives poor directions in for papers, then grades harshly on little mistakes.
Dr. T is the best! He really loves what he teaches and he loves initiating discussion with his students. Although he sticks to the textbook, he brings up a lot of interesting examples of communication in the field he researches. Lots of D2L quizzes and discussions, but they're really easy! I would recommend!
I took a 100 level course with Tschida and I didn't learn a thing. I would have been better off taking this class online. Additionally, his chapter quizzes (which you take with every single chapter in the book of over 600 pages) are absurd for a 100 level course. He's a nice guy, but don't take him as a professor.
If your not a Communications Major AVOID this class. Class is the textbook restated and turned into a discussion. Guidelines are super poor resulting in hard grading. Grading also takes a long time to receive back. Biggest grade is a huge research paper that is far more work than any 300 level class should be.
This class was frustrating because he gives unclear directions and has unclear expectations. He's very friendly and always willing to help, however.
You do all the reading at home and don't really go over anything in class besides what he wants to talk about that day. Very opinionated. Very easy but extremely boring. Lecture is useless.
The amount of work for this class is absolutely horrendous, week by week isn't bad but the project you have to do is basically equivalent to a capstone and each section requires weeks of working ahead, and procrastinating means upwards of 8-10 hours of work in one day. In addition, the subject matter is essentially common sense and unoriginal.
All of the reading is done at home and he doesn't really go over anything in class besides his opinion on things. Quiz on d2l on every single chapter in the book and they are NOT easy. Lectures are useless, but you have to go for one little daily writing each day that adds up for a large portion of your grade. A LOT of work for a 100 level course.
Very chill prof but class had nothing to do with comms. It was an attack on conservatives and white males the entire semester. Unfortunately he forces his beliefs onto the students. You teach yourself the course content and then take weekly quizzes. After the quiz is when he teaches you the chapter content.
I liked Dr. Tschida. You have to read 1-2 chapters every week and then take D2L quizzes on them, but there are no tests and no final exam. However, the chapters are sometimes lengthy and the D2L quizzes are NOT super easy. That said, as long as I did the readings, I never did worse than a B on the quizzes. Not hard to get an A if you do the reading
Although this teacher is very positive and energetic, do not take this class with David Tschida. I was confused when I would show up to class and we would review what we already took a quiz on. Now I believe it's good to review knowledge after a quiz, but the only thing that motivated me to go to were clicker questions. Personally it's not worth it
Dr. T is super energetic and loves getting the class involved in discussion. The D2L quizzes are somewhat in depth so reading the chapters is mandatory. There aren't any exams or in-class quizzes; but there are reflection questions at the end of each lecture that he uses for attendance purposes.
This course was so easy. He does do iClicker questions and that is the only reason why showing up is mandatory. He makes the class interesting. All tests are online and open book. I recommend taking this class with Professor Tschida.
very nice guy. sometimes gets carried away about his feministic beliefs even though he teaches a journalism class. some i clicker questions and the rest was open book and powerpoint quizzes
He is a big feminist and it reflects in his lectures. He is so nice though! He is a guy that will remind you of your cool uncle. The class is so easy all you have to do is show up and answer iclicker questions otherwise he doesn't care if you are on your phone or doing other homework. He teaches a class well for having almost 300 kids in it.
Has online chapter quizzes that are opened up one week before they are due, take them whenever. Along with current event quizzes. Pretty easy quizzes, just keep the book open next to you when taking. Final online. Gives quite a bit of extra credit. Sometimes the clicker questions are graded and sometimes they are not. Very good
Easy A. Boring Class. Do 1 or 2 chapter quiz a week on D2L and a current events quiz. Chapter quizzes are 15 points each and have about 18 of them the whole semester along with current events quizzes which are 5 points. As long as you take all the quizzes and don't do terrible you should get an A. Also give 35 free extra credit points.
The work for this class is ridiculous. It is way more work than any 3 credit class should be& is made way more difficult than it needs to be. Everything is always talked about with so much fluff, when really the subjects are common sense. Avoid this class, because you will spend so much time on it & will still come out with a disappointing grade.
This was an easy class, but SO boring. There were about 300 students, so there wasn't hardly an class participation, it was just listening to him talk. He didn't do much to liven up the subjects and just played TED talks and talked about the subjects on a pretty basic level. We had quizzes taken online each week which weren't that difficult.
There were no tests throughout the semester, you would take chapter quizzes online and were able to use the presentations and the textbook, there was also a weekly current events quiz. You don't have to take notes in class because most of the notes are in the book or online. We watched a lot of TEDtalks and several documentaries, very easy A.
Basically all online, so there was really no point in going to class except to get i-clicker points. Zero notes in class and zero exams. Easy, but super boring.
I was in a class of 300 students and the class was easy. Before every class you have an online quiz from the book (word for word). You have clickers questions every day in class to make sure you're there. He is very opinionated which is fine because you tune out most of his lecture. You write a paper online for the final (it's kinda hard).
This course was easy. The lectures come after the quizzes for the correlated chapter, which is a little annoying. Show up for iClicker questions, use the textbook during theD2L quizzes, and you'll be fine.
THIS CLASS IS SO MUCH WORK for just a few credits. The amount of work is comparable to a capstone course. Lectures are pointless, you receive an unbelievable amount of busy work, and the papers require an astronomical amount of time and meticulousness & he includes his own bias when explaining topics/situations/material. A semester ruining class.
You will take a quiz before he even lectures on the material. The textbook is a graduate school level and hard to understand. He is passionate about what he teaches but does not engage the audience. I literally online shop or do homework everyday. Don't take him as a prof unless you are passionate about this material. The lectures are very dry.
This class is ridiculously hard. This class is mostly graded on online quizzes that are near impossible to do well on. The lectures/material is pointless. He lectures on things we were already quizzed on, so what's the point? Attendance is also mandatory, so you're forced to sit through a lecture that means nothing. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I took the honors version and Tschida was reasonable. Pretty funny guy, wants you to do well. I didn't think it was an unbearable amount of work. It was more than the regular version, but absolutely manageable. Offered a couple extra credit ops, and had about 5 speeches that you had to do for the whole semester. Again, reasonable.
Very well spoken and intelligent person. He's passionate about the environment and it shows. He is kind, reasonable, and willing to work with you. The class is very interesting and he includes videos and media which are always nice. Would recommend him and this class especially if you are interested in advocacy and protecting the environment!
This is the worst class I have ever taken. I do not like Tschida. This class consisted of 20 journal entries and 5 position papers. It's over halfway through the semester and nothing is in the grade book yet. He won't post journal entries on canvas for weeks then puts 8 in at once that are all due within the next week. horrible horrible horrible
I could not stand this class with Tschida. Very boring class and literally 100% opinion based. My time would've been better spent elsewhere. He'll give out like 5 writing assignments all at once and have all of them be due within a few days rather than have a full semester schedule. Lectures are pretty much just him rambling.
40 slide powerpoint lectures, sometimes multiple 40-60 page readings a week, and weekly quizzes and disc boards. I get that online classes are hard for prof's too but it would've been nice if he was available more frequently. Or respond to an occasional email when there was an error in a quiz question... Oh and lot's of spelling errors on slides..
i had dr t for two classes and got a B in both of them. you have to read the textbook & take a lecture quiz every week, which would be tough, unless if you actually read, you should get a 15 or 18 out of 20. theres a big project that will take a lot of time, but its nothing too difficult. dr t is also funny & makes class engaging & worthwhile.
Don't take this online if you have the option. Lectures were on powerpoint and you had to individually click each slide and press play. You cant speed it up either, which is annoying when you miss one part and you have to relisten to everything again. readings were typically long, and he does give leeway. Pay attention to criteria- esp. Disussions.
this class was way too hard and his lectures he provided were not even based on what the quizzes were on. We had about 4 quizzes a week, and some were due on Saturday nights. He was very unorganized and an overall very frustrating class for me. The quizzes were also impossible. Do not take this unless you have to
CJ 207 is equal parts textbook reading, powerpoint lectures, and "study notes" that provide a good breakdown of the dry textbook. Assignments include discussions and a canvas quiz on each day's material. You'll almost never need to use the powerpoint lectures. Having two monitors w/ his Study Notes and the quiz side-by-side is really useful.
Don't take this class! It'll ruin your GPA. He grades super hard and then your stuck scrambling how to get your grade up.
I think Tschida is fine overall, I didn't hate him but I certainly didn't like him. The class was completely asynchronous this semester, but the course load was kinda ridiculous. We spent 3/4 of the semester reading & taking 60 question quizzes each week, then we had 4 speeches crammed into the last month. He's a tough grader too. Very nit-picky.
Lots of quizzes hard to find the answers he does not really teach
CJ 105 was a complete waste of my time. I took it solely for the credit. SO MUCH WORK. One week of material consisted of 48 plus 32 page readings, 41 slide lectures, a READING SPECIFIC quiz that is challenging, and an in-depth discussion post. And this is every week! In class, he played videos instead of teaching the material. Easy A, no tests tho
Do not take this class unless you have to! The workload each week is awful: 40 pages of boring textbook + 30 page slideshows + discussion posts + 25 question quiz + reflection papers. He can be a tough grader. It doesn't help that his lectures are super boring and almost impossible to listen to. Most of the time he just rambles for the 50 minutes.
Dr. Tschida is a good professor. But that's it. He has good notes, decent lectures but the class becomes very mundane. I didn't feel like I took much away from this class. If it is required for your major, it isn't a bad class to take just nothing special.
SO BORING. If you're required to take this class for credit to graduate, just do it and get it over with. Get ready to read 1-2 30 page readings, watch 4 hours worth of lecture, and have a 25 question quiz every week. The only good thing about this was that I didn't have to go to class, all of the material is online.
unreasonable amount of hw. 30+ page powerpoint lectures, 30+ page reading, quiz and discussion weekly. quizzes are supposed to be 50/50 lecture & reading, but its about 85 reading/15 lecture most weeks. If you don't read you won't pass. don't guess. everything online so you can look at material while taking quizzes, but takes a LONG time.
I found it very hard to pay attention in his classroom. Lectures arent engaging & there is no textbook. I wont be taking another one of his classes.
he assigns lectures for you to watch/listen to on your own but doesn't refer to them at all in class, just shows us a few ted talks and videos related to it and then you have to take a quiz and do a discussion on it each week. its just rlly weirdly set up. he also doesn't do class participation at all. boring and monotone
His class is extremely difficult to stay focused and awake in. His voice is very monotone and boring to listen to. He assigns 30+ slides of powerpoint lectures, 15+ pages of reading from a pdf with small letters, and difficult quizzes each week. In class, he makes some things very political when they do not need to be.
Used lots of Ted Talk videos for class. Had a ton of reading on papers that he electronically scanned since there was no book for the class. Lectures along with the Ted Talk videos. Very nice and funny but just be prepared for lots of reading outside of class. Quiz's can be super hard if you haven't done the readings.
The chances of scoring high are very low as the majority of the students in my class got low marks on our papers. Also, not very clear on what the professor wanted from us.
Dave uses this class to preach his politics and doesn't back any of his statements with any sort of scientific evidence. This He flat out denied the nature-nurture theory in class, stating there was no evidence in the communications field of it existing. IMO, joke of a class, avoid Dave at all costs.
I will say that Professor Tschida seems like a nice man. But this class was a nightmare, he shows a different Ted Talk every class and then gives you a weekly quiz regarding nothing from in class, and confusingly worded questions which will make sure you get a bad grade on the quizzes even if you do read. Don't even know what I've learned.
Combined with the constant showings of Ted Talks and the lack of actually discussing/teaching class content I would not recommend this class or professor to anyone. His expectations for his students are completely misaligned with how he actually teaches the class. I was completely disappointed with this class, would not recommend to anyone.
Classes are mundane and painful to sit through. Expect to read a 30-page chapter every week, take quizzes that are poorly worded, and watch long power points. Multiple huge and time-consuming group papers that were honestly worth so few points despite the size and amount of time that goes into them, but will tank your grade if you bomb.
Easily one of my least favorite CJ classes I have taken here. So many lengthy group projects throughout the semester, difficult reading quizzes, and discussion posts with questions that make no sense. On top of this he is an incredibly tough grader so it is unlikely you will get anything above a C. Don't take this unless you absolutely need to.
All major grades are GROUP ESSAYS with groups you don't get to choose. Assignments were returned up to 4 weeks later with no written feedback, only scores. So many Ted Talks, and his discussions are flat and one-sided. You get the impression he's not really even listening to you, like he's on autopilot. Avoid this course and professor at all costs.
This class was hard. There were super long quizzes due each week for chapters in the textbook and 2 of the 5 speeches were pretty difficult. However, you can tell professor Tschida cares about you doing well and he is pretty funny. I don't think I would recommend taking this class but if you do, it's not too bad.
tschida is very genuine in his lectures and explains things well. reflection assignments every class period so make sure to come and get points for those. online quiz every week that is pretty difficult but if you watch the lecture and read the articles you can do fine
Quizzes are WAY too ridiculously hard. And there's WAY too many of them. Out of 29 (29!!) quizzes, I didn't score a perfect score on a single one. He goes over the material AFTER you take the quiz, which is frustrating. He's a great guy though with entertaining lectures and a straightforward and organized course.
Took this class because I need a speech or writing fulfillment. You will have 5 speeches total, 2 being your main big ones that are around 7-10 minutes and 3 being smaller ones that are like 2-3 minutes. Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this class. The quizzes were excessively long (60 questions) and speeches were graded pretty harshly. 7/10
The quizzes (which are impossibly worded and impossible to get an A on) take about 2 hours to complete with the textbook being written for a masters degree student and the questions being worded like riddles. There are 2-3 of these a week and they make up a big part of the grade. The final essay criteria is worded in a way that makes no sense.
He is an insanely stingy grader when it comes to the one page discussion papers that are due twice a week and has quizzes that are also due twice a week which are ridiculously impossible. They take 2-3 hours a piece and are worded for a masters level understanding when they are PRE lecture quizzes and we are supposed to be just learning the terms.
Lectures are fine, but the homework is super exhausting for a 200 level class. There are two 20 question quizzes per week based on online lectures that take at least 1 1/2-2 hours to complete (with notes) followed by two discussion papers per week to which he grades very meticulously. The questions are worded awfully on quizzes. Mentally draining.
This professor waited until the end of the year to grade 40+ assignments and would mark off even though he have no feedback. Would take off 5+ points for small errors and was overall so inconsistent. Was very frustrating with grading and the assignments were poorly explained and he did not do a good job outlining what he wanted. Overall bad grader.
Quizzes were excessively long and he was a pretty picky grader on speeches but overall, I honestly thought he was fun to work with. Lectures did get pretty boring at times but its just one of those classes you have to power through especially if your major is nothing related to CJ. Everyone could benefit from taking a speech class, though.
He is incredible difficult when it comes to grading and is entirely too hard on weekly discussions. He will write far too much for an easy question on an assignment or about how he grades. There are many of his questions with typos and confusing run-on sentences. Grading takes forever. I also found him quite rude over email at times.
Dr. Tschida is great at giving clear rubrics on what he wants, while his grading is tougher than most. If you reach out to him on how to improve, he supplies you with a lot of good feedback/recommendations. There are a lot of repetitive assignments with weekly discussions, quizzes, and a couple of essays that follow the same guidelines.
Way too much effort needed. Overly hard discussion posts that take hours and multiple papers weekly that are extremely time consuming. I spent more time on this online class doing discussion posts, responses to the discussion posts, papers, quizzes, etc. Just be prepared to spend hours on this class weekly, takes away time from other classes.
He is a strict grader, even when it comes to discussion posts and replies to peers. Sometimes the way he worded certain things on comments or announcements on canvas made me feel bad.
