He is one of the hardest professor I have ever taken in my life. This class is supposed to be an easy A, but NOoo! He's is so freaking hard. He is funny, and interesting, but CST 110 should be easy. That's what I heard from my other friends, but our class had to go through a big mess in order to get a good grade.
I graduate next semester and I've never had such a hard teacher before. He's extremely sarcastic to the point where he calls students hurtful names. Makes you feel dumb when you ask Q's. I had to stress over this class just to make sure I passed. The 2 tests are hard. Make sure you write down everything he says. Worst teacher I've ever had.
Tyson loves himself, and it really shows. He has an annoying sense of humor that is constantly on display. He's not afraid to be rude to students he doesn't like. He assigns narrow, uninteresting topics for the speeches, and then grades harshly. Very hard for an intro course.
I plan to transfer to a four year school so I am glad this is not the "blow off" course described. I know that not only do I need good grades to transfer but I need to be prepared for the difficulty of a bachelors program. This prof. Isn't easy but if you work, you learn!
I think Prof Tyson was fair but there was alot of work for this class.
Very rude and not afraid to call you out. Never goes over assignments clearly and your're lost come midterm and final. Its hard to keep up with your grade becuase he doesnt use blackboard. Makes public speaking very uncomfortable. Doesnt use the textbook and good for making up his own definitions. Take a different teacher.
It is impossible to take an A or even a B in his class. I took four classes this semester, studied more for this class than the other 3 combine yet I ended up with As in other 3 and a bad grade in this one.
Horrible teacher I did everything asked and still received a very low grade. Does not keep his grades online. Don't waste your money on this class take a different professor.
If you want to learn to be a good speaker than this is the class. My parents both have to do alot of presentations for their work so I know the importance, even if I don't like it. This professor doesn't let you get away with not doing the work & he gives clear written guidelines as to what he wants. If you follow the guide then you do better
Professor Tyson was the most difficult and confusing professor ever. He was so extra and unclear. Each student that had his class had the exact same thing to say about him. He made an INTRO class seem as if we we're suppose have known the material and be expert communicators. I would not suggest anyone to take his class
Tyson is the worst professor ever!!! I wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone the class yes but a different teacher. He expects you to be an expert in a beginners class. He grades so harshly and makes it damn near impossible to get an A his instructions change and he gives unclear instructions each class period. He's too full go himself
I wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone the class yes but a different teacher. He expects you to be an expert in a beginners class. He grades so harshly and makes it almost impossible to get an A his instructions change and he gives unclear instructions each class period. He's too full go himself and should take a different approach
Sir Tyson is the worst professor ever! I would not recommend this professor to anyone, the class yes but trust me you want a different teacher. He expects you to be an expert in a beginners class. He grades to harshly and makes it impossible to get an A. He's too full of himself and he ask for too much for a simple CST class.
THE LAST 3 POSTS SOUND LIKE THEY ARE FROM THE SAME PERSON....I did find Prof. Tyson to be demanding of us but think he just wants us to push ourselves and to think of this as an important topic. I liked my grade & this teacher.
he is very rude and full of himself. material isn't clear and has a attitude when you express your concerns. must attend every class or you will be lost and even still its very difficult to pass. I did more work than any other class and still received a low grade. if you need this class take someone else. For a intro class he makes it complicated.
I will admit that I don't think he's a good teacher. He is very full of himself and he brings politics in to most lectures, but if your views aren't in line with his, you're told to focus. I didn't use the text very much. Overall, I enjoyed the presentations. If you need help, he'll help, so there's no reason you shouldn't get a passing grade.
Professor Tyson is an interesting teacher & if you follow his directions word for word you can do fine in class
Knows an incredible amount about his craft, but because of this and his excitement his lectures are just of blurr of too much knowledge. Its hard to group your notes as subjects and concepts change without pattern. He takes his craft very seriously so don't go into this as an elective. If you love theatre this is a good mentor.
This professor is interesting and wants you to really learn the material. Expects alot but you learn alot.
I was not expecting an easy A. I was expecting for an entry level community college class to be a little easier to understand. He is mean to students & often times belittles them for no reason but for his personal pleasure. His tests are made for your to fail. He is horrible at responding to emails for any reason. He is all over the place.
Didn't like him at all. Nothing was clear. He didn't help much.
Obviously really loves what he is talking about & wants us to love it too but he isn't very patient and is a tough grader.
Lectures are important, you need to be a good note taker. All you have to do is ask for help and this professor will go over the material with you until it clicks. E-mail is okay, but the best way to communicate is during his office hours. He uses jokes to break the tension in the classroom, but it will cause more tension if you take them personal.
Most unclear teacher ever. Also, he's very dramatic (theatre background) and is pretty weird. He's also the type that likes to pick on you and can be sort of mean when he wants to.
Professor Tyson is an awesome instructor if you are serious about learning to speak in front of people and you want to be a professional. If you are just there for the ride, then he will not be your favorite instructor.
Prof Tyson clearly demonstrates a knowledge of the information and presents it clearly. However, for a communications professor I would expect him to communicate with his students without building walls. Under the guide of "rattling the cage" to "make students better and more confident" when in reality he insults them and makes them defensive.
Prof. Tyson made this class bearable. Has high expectations but gives detailed instructions to help you meet those expectations. Learned alot.
I personally dont like him, i think hes one of the worst teachers ive had while being at nova. He is very strict about attendance and tardies. His oral presentations are not that hard but he has a habit of interupting you while your presenting and he also picks on you sometimes & calls you out. he doesnt care about you, if you take him good luck..
Professor Tyson takes all the fun out of Theatre. He teaches the same stuff that I learned in middle school, made us feel really dumb, and just made taking this class an over all bad experience. I advise anyone look at taking any of his classes to NOT!
Interesting lectures, but long and fast. NOTES are a MUST. If you have to miss class make sure you have someone you trust take notes, because he will not help you. He really makes you work for your grade. Do not take if you're looking for an easy class. But he does make the subject fun.
I think professor Tyson is a wonderful teacher. He is very funny. I had a three hour class with him on Fridays. At first I was regretting taking that long of a class, but he made it worth my while. Don't be late or miss class, and make sure you pay attention and take notes. He teaches in lists, if you take good notes you'll be okay for the tests.
Professor Tyson is an overall good teacher. He does comes off as a little rude sometimes. Do not miss class and if you do make sure you have someone to get good notes from. Note taking is essential and is the only way you will pass. He doesn't give many graded assignments so tests are a huge part of your grade. Study and you will pass.
Alright this was probably the biggest mistake a rookie freshman could make. Not check their professors on RMP. He bullies the class, picking out people to make fun of (don't have nose rings or dyed hair). He's rude and interrupts student a lot. He swore we needed the book but I opened it twice for assignments. Just not a good guy or prof.
Coming from a usually straight A student- do not take his class. I found myself frustrated and confused by his ironically poor sense of communication. None of the assignments were clear, the marks on presentations had no explanation. He judges looks and makes tasteless comments. This class is great for every major but take a different professor
I loved this professor in the acting class at school, but he's rude when it came to people dropping or coming in late. The tests were very tough and didn't follow the notes most of the time. Homework almost every week, DO IT. If you have a question, ask him ASAP. But, he's invested in the lives of the students and very passionate about theatre.
Kind of regret taking the class. Professor often explains concepts but gets sidetracked by certain elements pertaining little to the big picture and ends up not explaining ideas fully. Notes were a mess because of that. He's a bit blunt and rude and I think I ended up regressing my own interpersonal communication skills.
Doesn't go over test results so you don't know where you went wrong. He does give extra credit so take it, you will need it. Take lots of notes.
Definitely makes you work for your grade but is an amazing professor. If you fail this class it is because of carelessness on your part. He wants you to pass and gives constructive criticism, so if you're soft don't take him. You get a lot out of this class.
This professor is very difficult. He tends to go off topic during lectures and is all over the place at times. He is also the Theater professor and gives extra credit if you go to one of his plays but, you have to pay to get in. During one lecture topic, he spends a LONG time talking about the n-word and other racial slurs. YOU HAVE TO DO A SPEECH
The breakdown: -There are presentations and he'll grade you harshly, even if it's an intro class. -He'll have someone time you to the SECOND and count every um, uh, like etc. you utter. -He is rude, though I don't think he realizes it. -The extra credit is 5 pts and cost $6 to attend the play and 2 hours of your time, speeches are 100-250 pts
I think this professor is great! He has a dry sarcastic sense of humor which possibly some take for rudeness but he really knows his stuff. I had no problem with the amount of work and felt his grading was fair. If you put in the work, you do well.
Engaging lectures
The out of class work is where everything gets stupid. Arbitrary Crap everywhere. He tells you right off the bat there is a Group Project. I find the perfect topic and could do the whole thing myself. The day he assigns it? Surprise, Enviormental topics only. Waste of textbook money. Good luck finding due dates or details on assignments. Avoid him.
At all cost try to avoid taking his class. He's rude and probably doesn't realize it. You barley do any work in class and when you do it may or may not be graded. The speeches and exams are weighted heavily on your grades. He is never clear on when assignments are due and he is always trying to find a way to put you on the spot in class.
Despite what some people say on this site, Prof. Tyson is a good teacher and because this is a PUBLIC SPEAKING course he does rely heavily on the project/speaking assignments. I found him to be interesting & helpful.
For a communication teacher he's a terrible communicator when it comes to his expectations. He's never clear about what is going to be on the tests. AVOID if possible. Definitely don't take him in a hybrid course.
I think you either like Prof. Tyson or you don't but I found him to be really helpful when I needed it. I was able to get a good grade but had to work for it.
If you're not an actor, avoid this class! Prof Tyson is one of the worst instructors I've had at NVCC. He doesn't use the assigned textbook and lectures class as if they are in acting class. He doesn't provide clear guidance and bounces all over the place while lecturing. If you want to improve your interpersonal skills, this is NOT the class!
Prof. Tyson is an inspiring teacher. He tells you what he wants in projects and if you will not follow the instructions, you will lose it. I would surely recommend him if you really want to improve your communication skills. He is easily accessible if you want to ask anything. You just have to work for it! Best teacher.
He's a decent prof, but generally I got more annoyed with him as the semester went on. Group projects are big, and he has some arbitrary rules for things - he offers EC if you go to a theater show he directs. I personally wouldn't take him again, but he's not the worst. Most of his homework was online though - 2 weekly discussion boards
EXTREMELY difficult to receive an A or B in this class. THE harshest grader I know. He also does not hand out many grades; your entire grade is basically based on your 2 speeches and 2 exams. That's about it. Doesn't even hand out a study guide for the exams; we also never used the textbook we were given. Avoid this class at all costs.
I was struggling at first because of outside school issues and Prof. Tyson was there for me. He helped me understand what I needed to do to get a better grade and I ended up passing. Thanks Prof.
David Tyson, well, one of the poorest professors i have ever been with. One of the worst professors in Woodbridge Campus (NOVA). Does not provide proper note and has a very negative attitude towards students. If you want to waist your time, money, learn nothing, and if you want to get a D attend this class simple as that.
A professor in communications but the worst communicator. Exams are all based on the daily notes that no body really gets it. This Prof doesn't care if you gain knowledge or if you do any side projects. He designs the exams in a way that tricks and fails you intentionally. I don't think that is what college and specifically an art's class is about.
This professor I definitely do NOT recommend taking. He does not prepare you for the midterm or final exam. He calls students out for walking in class late, or picks on you for whatever he wants. He asks questions that are personal & shouldnt be asked during class. Doesnt give good directions for speeches and doesnt post grades until the end.
Mr. Tyson is not a bad teacher, he just cares more about attendance than if you learned. Lots of note taking. Don't take notes you don't understand the class or tests. Study for his tests (super long). He never posts grades. But he's nice some days. Better theatre teacher than a communications teacher.
Little organization skills when it comes to instructing note taking. He will go back and forth during a lecture with important and non important information & you'll have no idea what to take note of. Because of the way the information is presented your notes will be unorganized & random, which will give you a poor studying tool for the tests.
he's a great guy but not a great teacher he doesn't explain the class at all he expects you to learn it outside of class. literally only 3-4 grades plus attendance and if you miss 4 classes you get a 0 for attendance.
There is zero online presence, we took a final today, and not a single grade is posted. There is no rubric for the few assignments you get. he just tells you to wright about something and thats it. If he doesn't like it, you'll get a bad grade. For being a com teacher, he is one of the worst communicators ive ever seen. Oh and hes afraid of phones.
please do not take this class, find a different prof
I'll just say this: please avoid. He is smart, knows his material, and is well qualified. But his double standards with students and grading make this class a nightmare. He is a tough grader and very harsh critic. You have to really work for a good grade.
Professor Tyson has been one of my favorite communications professors to work with. His class is tough, you need to put in the work to get the grade you deserve. Do not take his classes if you are lazy, not invested in communications, or are looking for an easy A. He's willing to work with you if you reach out to him, but he's strict w attendance.
He is incredibly stubborn and rude. At first, I didn't mind his condescending remarks, but after a while, it became tiring. Not to mention, he grades his CST 110 students like they have been studying the subject for years. Professor Tyson thinks quite highly of himself and constantly needs validation from the people around him. Avoid this class!
Professor Tyson is very educated when it comes to communication and theater. He clearly has pride in it and talks down on students like its nothing. Making fun and mocking the quiet girls in class is what pissed me off. Only 4 grades over the whole course and he grades your speeches harshly so you better pass the exams.
This was a hard class but I learned alot and feel more comfortable speaking in front of others.
He is good at teaching, but his grading is extremely out of balance. He expects you to be a professional speaker in your first speech and will make test design to make you fail. He wants you to take notes but goes from page 1 to 7 to 3 to 25 (all over the place) and 5 sec per page. He is extremely harsh with critics and if its not his way well...0
A lot of the students complain but I have had other teachers much more difficult. I wish there were more things to get graded on but I love Professor Tysons enthusiasm in this virtual class.
Professor Tyson is a knowledgeable person in his field, but he often makes condescending remarks about students, and he grades speeches as if we're all pursuing a television career. He also only gives a handful of assignments (speeches mostly) so if you don't do well on most of them, YOU WILL FAIL. Seriously, avoid this guy at all costs.
He is a very enthusiastic professor who makes class entertaining, or at the very least bearable. However, his grading is atrocious and there is never a perfect score in his book. He is very nitpicky about your mistakes and refuses to give out rubrics so you know what no to do beforehand. He also refuses to give out the slides afterwards.
Prof Tyson is one of the worst professors I have ever had. A 100 level public speaking course should aid and encourage students to improve the quality of their public speaking. He does not do this. He provides no rubrics, no explanations for grades, never utilizes the textbook, tests on "his definitions," and does not record virtual classes.
Absolutely DO NOT RECOMMEND! Even if you agree with his politics, you will be sick of hearing about it by the end of the 3rd class. He refuses to grade by a rubric on speeches even though he has one that he uses for his "holistic" grading. Attendance counts for your grade. Camera MUST be on all the time for Zoom classes. Find someone else to take!
When the class average for assignments is 60%, try to find someone else
Worse professor ever for acting, and if you are interested in acting, I would suggest transferring to GMU immediately and forget about it for NOVA.
I cannot put enough emphasis on how rude and condescending he is. I have anxious tics to which he would point out in the middle of class in front of everyone. he only gave us one assignment and made it impossible to pass basically sealing our failure in the class. He was the rudest prof. i have ever had PLEASE AVOID.
I had to transfer to community college so I find this teacher about the same as professors I had back at my 4 year school. Everyone says hes hard but I had harder teachers. I find Prof Tyson interesting and helpful.
He's extremely rude and calls people out a lot
This professor is a no-no. If you take him you will stress out a lot and will fail, if that's your goal take him, but not AVOID HIM. He is rude, incompetent, grades way too harshly, and if you think he's laid back, Not at all. He also can't take a joke, if you tell a joke to the professor of any kind, he will tell your advisor of what you did.
I think Professor Tyson is very sarcastic and it is easy to take him the wrong way but personally I didnt have any problems with him. I followed his assignment instructions word for word and got a decent grade.
He was strict with attendance, graded hard I barely got a C like most people in that class if I am being honest this was one of the worst experiences I have ever had in college.
Best advice, Don't take him.
I was a straight A student in other classes, but received a D from this class??? This professor doesn't grade easy.
At first I thought the class is hard because I keep losing points in discussion, but I realized that it was the professor himself that is grading me wrongfully. I suggest that if you got poor grade for no reason, even though you follow all directions carefully, file for academic grievance with the Dean, I am sure they will give you the option to do
He sounds like a sarcastic individual, but he lacks the skills of being a professor. He will grade you harshly if you make the smallest error that can be easily fixed. Honestly, If you still want to take him, you need to be perfect 100% to pass this class, he is only looking for excuses to remove points, not add them. I warned yall readers.
Does he not realize this is a 100 course? No surprise half the course dropped him by the end of the semester
Do not take him unless you're a good writer that puts their work to 100%. He will grade you harshly, as the posts below says that he is not looking for points to add, but rather to remove points. I realize that when every-time I made a small error, he would take off points heavily, so I would suggest another professor, and PLEASE AVOID HIM.
Tried to help me when I had problems at home affecting my class work. Interesting class talks too.
He was rude to a lot of students. Semester started we had about 30 students by the end there were only 9 of us left. He would get frustrated at students. For example the school canceled class and, he was frustrated because, ALL students did not understand his written instructions and put the schedule behind..
Toughest grader I've ever had at NOVA, if you wanna cry with harsh grades, this is the professor for you.
Although I think Professor Tyson may be burnt out, he obviously knows his stuff. I learned a lot.
Professor Tyson has a sarcastic sense of humor and seems harsh but when I needed help he gave it without question. He also obviously has passion for the topics. Overall I think he was a good teacher.
If you want ruined up your good grades take his class. Worst class I ever had. Never appreciate the work.
Most Tough courses and random questions on the test and time are not enough for the test. He never listens to you if you have a real problem and try to talk. Better to skip the class; otherwise, you will ruin your semester and messed your grade.
I actually enjoyed his lectures. I liked his no bs attitude honestly. However, incredibly harsh grader. I can't stress that enough. As others have said, if you aren't absolutely 110% perfect in his eyes, your grade and GPA will suffer. I would be absolutely astounded by how low grades I would receive on my work. I'd avoid him at all costs.
Just like everybody said, he is mean and harsh when it comes to grades. But most of all he thinks that he is doing best of all and it is the students fault dropping out. He never improves. in fact he thinks he's "too kind" when he does bare minimum. Needs to be humbled.
this professor said at the beginning of class "students come up to me and say they are straight-A students and say they don't deserve the bad grade. not my fault your professors are too easy on you" I was a straight-A student before this INTRO class. He doesnt understand that its an intro class and grades like we are getting this major. do not take
LISTEN, Don't take this man's classes ever. Multiple students have admitted to hating his class because he makes them overly difficult than they need to be. His class average for my class is 52% with the highest average being 60% on an assignment, and it's the day after finals. He is a super pushy professor. Class started with 20 and ended with 5.
Not good class to take . Very cold!!!
He makes the course way more harder than it is.
I personally can't see from a distance and was using my phone to take pictures, he called me out saying it was strike 2 even tho I take pictures all the time but every one else does it. I was eating a piece of candy in class and he told it was strike 1 even though it was something small and chewy so it couldn't make any noise.
Don't.
Even though he's tough on grading, that's how it is in any kind of arts class. He's not afraid of answering questions regarding theatre work, and gives constructive criticisms. He may be a bit snide, but it's up to the person to take it constructively. Long story short, if you're serious about improving your work, take his classes.
L WARNING The professor IS quick-tempered and condescending when answering questions. His instructions are vague For extra credit, attendance at his unimpressive shows is required. If the professor were a ship, he'd be the Titanic; students get aboard thinking it's the journey of a lifetime, only to hit the iceberg of his exams and sink their GPA
Professor Tyson is a fantastic instructor, and I would highly recommend him.He is very clear about expectations and made sure we understood exactly what we needed to do to get the best grade possible. He was also very kind, so you can be guaranteed an A in his class if you participate and do the work.
Very misogynistic, always making jokes towards gender was very weird..
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, HE DOESN'T POST NOTES ONLINE AND IF YOU MISS CLASS HE FORCES YOU TO GET YOUR NOTES OFF A CLASSMATE AND NEVER GIVES IT TO YOU. Horrible experience all together and made jokes about porn. So you get the Idea.
If you have major anxiety speaking in front of others do not take this class with him. However he will not post notes online, he will force to take notes on paper and if you miss class will tell you to copy notes off your classmates. DO NOT TAKE HIM. AVOID THIS TEACHER.
Every time I warn someone about this man they're like "it can't be that bad" and then by the end of the semester they understand. Professor Tyson is genuinely awful. Those who have been in his plays especially will know. I took his class because I was passionate abt theatre and thought I could tough it out. Genuinely the worst class I've ever taken
If you like passion, he's the man. If you like having fun with shows, he's not the man. One word of caution as a fellow Tyson actor, beware the weaver.
He seems to lack a sense of professionalism during his lectures by the way he joked about a female student watching porn, as well as with how open he was with talking about his political opinions. He even forced me to state my opinion of a presidential candidate to the class. Just uncomfortable. He also doesn't post lecture notes anywhere on canvas
He's a kind, funny & deeply philosophical professor & I could listen to him talk for hours. However, for this class his rubrics have too many sub questions making it hard to know how to answer his questions properly. His notes aren't uploaded to Canvas. There's hardly any assignments at all. & the tests are riddled with trick questions galore.
Avoid this class at all costs. Professor Tyson makes it unnecessarily difficult, with tough exams and unhelpful feedback. However, Unstuck ai can be a lifesaver for study prep. Take this course only if you're willing to put in extensive work.
terrible teacher doesn't know how to teach
terrible learning experience
always off topic
told to get the textbook but said I'm not gonna be based off the. textbook
always talking about something random
failed my entire group on a group project
doesn't post notes so if you miss one day your gonna be behind
His background in theatre makes him an interesting lecturer. I wish he would post some of his notes since sometimes it is hard to keep up. If you can handle sarcasm then he is an okay professor.
If you follow the Rubric, the assignments are pretty straight forward. Not much worse than in high school. At least Prof. Tyson is an interesting lecturer.
I've done 4 plays of his and taken multiple classes, I kept coming back purely for the theater certificate. He is rude, doesn't care about wellbeing of students, and uses the same huge presentation in every single one of his courses teaching you the same stuff regardless of selected course. He's an even worse director who yells rather than leads.
very intensive atmosphere- can be too much at times.
DO NOT take this professor if you are a shy person, he is very out going which makes sense in a communications class, but it can be overwhelming at times. I registered for this class and only attended 4 classes before i dropped it. I suggest other.
Professor Tyson is a good professor. Grading syllabus is clear. Just follow the rubric. He does make some political jokes time to time, but not often. One critique I would say about him is that he doesn't upload the class notes on his canvas page. I recommend you to make a group chat with your classmates so you can share notes. Don't buy textbook.
I lost my self-esteem and confidence in his class. He doesn't listen to others' suggestions, just wants to control everything and do things his own way, which completely kills creativity. He asks personal questions and treats everyone poorly. He has also made racist and sexist remarks. You can ask anyone who's taken his class before!
bros is rude as hell nothing more to say just don't take his class and don't come late because he going to sneak diss the minute you come in.
Professor Tyson is a mixed bag, because his lectures are amazing, but on the other hand his completely terrible exams will tank your grade. He's a tough grader as it is, but with as little as he hands out it is nearly impossible to raise your grade without doing well on exams. He's nice, but I think he needs to make his exams more understandable.
Worst professor so far. You lose points just for being late or missing class, not how it should be. Expect to be called out in front of everybody.
Made people uncomfortable to get points across that had already been made including a much smaller young girl- making her stand really close to him so their noses almost touched and pointed out how red she was in front of class. Will not admit to (many) failures of being clear and following rules. Doesn't practice what he preaches. Otherwise smart
I USED to love acting, not so much anymore after taking this class with this professor. He grades subjectively and not through a rubric. He is a little to open about his political opinions. He is also sexualizing every assignment. Do NOT please take this professor. Your GPA will tank. They should not cancel this program but get a new instructor.
