Not an easy class. This professor is hard grader too. However, if your eally want to know BIO take this class. Explains everything very clear and in details. Exams are hard but he gives you all material just study.
The notes we take are basically the prof's brain just dumped all over the board, but once you take a minute to think what he says, it all makes sense. The only grades are small "clicker" quizzes and large 70 question tests. Studying is definitly required.
Dave is hands down, one of the best professors I've ever had. He is VERY clear in his notes, he explains every little detail and leaves no stone unturned. If you have a question, just ask. He'll put it in lamen's terms for you. Tests aren't easy (70+ plus an essay) but you definitely LEARN in this class. Don't take if you're a lazy student.
He is extremely hard and doesnt seem to care much about his students. I study my butt off and im still failing. The only thing good about him is you WILL learn bio but he for sure doesnt make life easy. would not recommend taking him
He's extremely difficult. You can study all you want, and there's a good chance you'll still fail. Definitely stay away...
He is extremely hard. TESTS HARD, HARD, HARD. I studied day in and day out and still failed. His class is the reson i now have a non sciece major.
He is very nice, and knows what he is talking about. He gives random clicker quizzes so if your not in class you will get a zero. The class is graded on a curve, so this helps. His notes are very clear and helpful. The tests are an application of the notes, so they are challenging. Go to class and you should be fine. He teaches from a diff. book.
He is willing to help and recommends his students ask questions. I suggest reading the textbook and studying every day. He doesn't assign homework, but his tests are hard. He also assign random clicker quizzes. So attendance is mandatory!
He gives you a ton of info and the exams are difficult.I had him for both lecture and lab and I found him very helpful and nice. He is an awesome teacher who knows what he is talking about, but don't take him if you do not plan on studying. He did make up for the class's difficulty with a generous curve. Take him if you actually want to learn.
Prof Waddell is awesome! I was not looking forward to taking biology but he made class interesting. He does not use the book and puts everything on BB. Clicker quizzes are easy he posts the questions the night before. Test are hard. There was a lot of material for the final, but all in all the class was pretty easy. I got an A, because of the curve
HORRIBLE TEACHER WAIST OF MY LIFE DONT EVER TAKE HIM OR YOU WILL FAIL BIOLOGY!!!!!!!!! GET OUT NOW!!!
Adds more info than other class but Good for entrance exams. Did not finish the entire syllabus. CURVED I got C?s on exams an A in the class. 10 essay ?s to study for exam 2 are on the exam you choose 1. Go to lectures and study you?ll get an A. Never opened the book. DON?T take him as your lab teacher he has a post and pre lab. Kristen was amazing
Great professor. Explains everything very well and easy to understand. Exams are difficult, but weighed fairly. definitely study.
HATE biology, but Dr. Waddell made this class tolerable. best part is no attendance policy, never used book, easy clicker quizzes, and HUGE curve. he's very helpful, USE HIS OFFICE HOURS! he's a very interesting, nice person in & out of class. tests were hard but if you do the possible essay questions before you take the test, you should do well!
He is a great professor. I hate Biology but I didn't hate going to his class. Pay attention and write down what he puts on the board and you're set. He gives you essay questions to study for each test. You may fail the tests but he has a HUGE curve :)
The lecture was kind of boring, but if take notes and study them, you can get at least a B.
He was a pretty good teacher. He did really easy clicker quizzes every 2 weeks or so and really helped as a grade booster. He curved all of the tests to the average score of the class. You really have to pay attention to all of his notes and write down everything because he bases tests mainly off in class notes and not the book.
He is an easy professor. GO TO LECTURE!! His class is based 100% on it. The textbook is just for reference, I haven't opened it all semester. He has clicker quizzes, and srops two of them. He has 4 exams and a final, and he paosts all the questions before hand for both the clicker quizzes and exams. He was great.

I took him for General Bio I wasn't really interested in the class at all.. he gives clicker quizes about once a week which are pretty easy b/c he gives the questions ahead of time. Something like 5 tests, which are very DIFFICULT. I got an A in the class but i literally had to study all the time.. He is willing to help, but ifou can find someone e
Waddell CERTAINLY knows what he is talking about. You MUST study, and you MUST go to lecture. I thought I failed the class, but thanks to the gracious curve at the end, I ended up with a B-! If your interested in Bio, I suggest taking him, he loves what he teaches.
I studied my ass off for his class. Lots of notes and the classes are only 50 minutes so by the time he was done talking i was confused and wanted out. the tests are ridiculously hard and at times i couldnt finish the essay portion. very bland guy. i wouldnt recommend him to anyone except bio majors who like that stuff.
Waddell is overall a decent professor and a great guy. He tends to repeat his lectures two or three times, getting behind on schedule. Tests can be tricky. He can also be slow to get scantrons read and tests graded. He grades on a super curve, which is helpful. Take Professor Waddell!
Took him for principles of bio praying for a "C" and nearly got an "A" super easy and great grading curve! Highly recommend!!
Dr. Waddell is an awesome professor and if you get the chance to take a class with him do it! He really strives to make his students learn the material and is always willing to assist students in and out of class. Pretty much the best professor at UNF.
Best Bio professor I had at UNF so far. very clear, consistent and loves what he teaches. deff. take him if you r interested in bio cuz he explains in DETAILS. tests are straight from lecture,, but include EVERYTHING he goes over! No book required
Dr. Waddell knows what he is talking about. By far the BEST biology teacher at UNF. He is not easy and makes you work for your grade but it is COMPLETELY worth it. I would happily take his class again. Tests are straight from lecture and you don't need the book.
I had him for principles of bio, and the class was easier than my high school honors biology. Attend class, lab (acutally study a little for lab quizes), study like 4 days ahead of the test for a few hours and you'll get an A, plus there is a B- , C+ curve. His lectures are clear and tests are straightforward.
I didn't care for this class at all, and it's not entirely his fault. I felt that the class was too large and too short. On his part, he's a little bland and just not engaging. Maybe it's because I'm not a big fan of his style of teaching. If faced with the choice knowing what I know now, I would just have taken a different science altogether.
I went in worried, but there was no reason to be. Professor Waddell is awesome. He's so smart and helpful. Go to every class (they're not bad!!) and take notes every time. Then, read the chapter and study your notes for the exams. He's so chill and the class was fun. Plus, he gives a HUGE curve. Love him!! SO MUCH!
The class was hard but I learned alot. He covers alot of material per exam, but he also is available to answer questions and go over problems with you. Tests cover material covered in class and clicker quizzes. Overall a great teacher.
Not a big fan of his teaching style. Grading system he uses is a mystery. However he is fair and gives students plenty chances to improve grades.
BORING! exams are super hard, with questions that come from left field. Nobody knew what was going on except for 2 smart kids. Class average was a 54 percent. Stresses you out for the entire semester and turns around to give a huge curve. Waste of time, I learned nothing. But u should take him if u want a decent grade, ONLY because of the curve.
I loved him. The class is not the easiest, but if you actually pay attention he's an amazing professor. I suck at biology, but I took him and got an A. You do have to study, but everything comes straight from his notes. He's also super helpful, he doesn't seem that way during lecture, but if you go to his office hours he'll help until you get it!
This guy. He talks soooo soft that I could barely hear him during his lectures. He never knows that grade anyone has because he does the curve at the end of the semester. He's over all a laid back guy. Take this and you'll pass forsure.
Knows his stuff. Actually do the work he recommends doing and you will come out better prepared than any other professor at UNF. Exams make sure you know your stuff, all upper division classes will have essay only exams. Do not expect easy points, but expect to know a ton.
Hes a good teacher but the material is very hard. Hes teaches it pretty clear but when it comes to the test they are hard. The wording on the tests are completely different then in class. If you really study hard and go to every class youll be fine but DONT MISS A CLASS!
Hard class, As long as you study everything he writes on the board you should be fine. The class consist of 3 test and the final and that's it. He grades on a curve. The whole test is multiple choice. I wont recommend him unless you really understand biology going in.
Very Good instructor but be prepared to take notes and listen. Recorded lectures was very helpful but you're never sure where you stand. Go see him a lot and do the online study. He knows his stuff and you will too when you finish the class.
I did not like this class. I learned nothing and felt like it was a waste of time and money. I would not suggest this class.
I've taken Dr. Waddell for Bio I, Mo Cell , and now Genetics. Don't take his class if you're expecting to have an A handed to you. DO take his class if you want to actually master the material. He is clear and realistic about his expectations, his lectures are interesting and relevant, and he cares about you- if you care about the class.
Very hard class, only made a B- because I did fantastic in the Lab. Grades on a curve and tells you that you're going to fail without the curve. If you can sit through a lecture and take notes, then you should be fine. He does connect assignments too that are pretty helpful. If you don't know too much about Biology, then I wouldn't recommend him.
Awesome professor, the only one that will prepare you for grad school. Don't complain or be lazy when things aren't handed to you. He is tough but it was very rewarding once everything clicked. Hardest class i've ever taken but would take it ten more times if I could.
Beall isn't the most exciting teacher, but he gives you all the information you need without overloading information on you. He doesn't make you do any unnecessary work. Biology is challenging in general. Most important thing: know exactly what he wants for the lab reports. Seriously, bug him until you know you've covered everything!
Took the honors class . As a Bio major I feel very prepared to take Bio 2 now. Waddell pushes you to study hard and learn the most you can, which will help you in higher level bio classes. He is willing to help students during office hours. Your grade depends on if you are willing to work hard or not- just focus on learning the most you can!
Really, really great professor. He doesn't use the textbook in class but if you take notes in class and then use the book for studying your notes, you should do well. Not an easy class but tests are very fair and if you work, you'll lean a lot. If you dont care about bio though, there are easier profs. If you're a major, he's your guy.
Dr. Waddell is an amazing professor. He prides himself with being the hardest Gen Bio 1 professor which is definitely true. His tests are tough and require a lot of understanding. If you go to lecture and do what he says, you will pass. Needless to say, he makes you work for your grade, but he is awesome and worth the struggle.
Dr. Waddell is a great professor! His class notes go in a deeper level of understanding which will prepare students for tough classes + medical school. Tests are not hard if you understand the notes thoroughly and have read the textbook a couple of times. Start studying early for exams though as they cover a lot of material! 100% recommend!
This entire class is just a series of lectures given by various faculty. For the first 2 weeks, Dr. Waddell wasnt even there. You can miss 1 class, anything else, youll fail. Even if youre in perfect academic standing. He doesnt care about any special circumstances, he barley knows who any of the students are, cause hes hardly ever there.
Can't miss more than 2 classes, if you aren't a people person I suggest not taking it. Can be boring as each class we listen to a new guest speaker, can definitely feel like a waste of time.
My class was much smaller and the class was very enjoyable, it informed me on so many things that I could do or have available to me on the UNF campus. REALLY helped me, and even my friends because I would know information that they would ask about the University.
i took gen bio 1 with dr waddell and he was honestly amazing. it's a tough class, and you have to put in the work, but he gives you all the information you need to succeed. he also hand writes the notes everyday on the board which i loved. he doesnt curve exams but he curves the class at the very end, so you will most likely pass
He is very knowledgeable about what he teaches but it is hard to hold your attention. His grading method is a little weird to so it's hard to tell your actual grade in the class. I would recommend this professor if you are really passionate about biology or medicine. Otherwise, this class is fairly difficult, especially in regards to tests.
He does great with students who are super passionate about Biology and ready to learn, slackers beware. His lectures go in depth and are very interesting, but sometimes are fast-paced and he doesn't like to go back over things. Ask to record the lectures! Exams are tough but will definitely get you ready for the rigors of a Bio major!
Took him for genetics. Hes a nice professor. No powerpoints and no textbook use for lecture he talks and writes on the board so you have to go to class to know what is going on. Test are 7 questions and all short answer. VERY HARD tests. Go to SI because he explains concepts and doesnt have enough example problems shown to us.
Professor Waddell was a great guy, and was communicative and respectful with his students. Class was based on 3 tests throughout the semester and a final. Minimal homework, MyLab online questions that was generally participation prior to tests. For sure a test heavy class, so you really need to know the material and remember nearly every detail
WARNING: If it is not your intention to major in Biology, Health, or you just wish to do a quick prereq science, this is NOT the class. While the information itself is nothing too difficult, you can tell that Professor Waddell takes great pride in his knowledge, and his EXAMS ARE DIFFICULT. With hard work, his class is most certainly doable though.
hes helpful if you go to him personally but if ur major is not bio don't take him. he is the hardest bio prof
DO NOT TAKE if you do not have to. Lecture heavy and tests are extremely difficult. Average was about 50-60% on tests. Likes to make you feel like you are failing but he does put a big curve at the end. Almost made me change my major.. he does know what he is talking about, he just prides on making you feel bad
Please dont take Professor Waddell. His lectures are way too confusing and too much information. Being online is basically teaching yourself. Exams are extremely difficult and you need to get a C on ONE exam to pass the entire class no matter what your grade is. Homework isnt too bad but its still an overwhelming class.
Don't take his class. He doesn't communicate with his TA, speeds through lectures, doesn't work with you outside of class, and honestly is one of the worst professors I've ever had. It seems he just likes to see students suffer. Exam averages were about 40-60%. In his lectures, he doesn't add any useful information and you're basically on your own.
Dr. Waddell was a super great professor when it came to explaining things over. I took him online and even over zoom he did a really great job. He actually made things so simple and made it fun to learn. He does do some curves and you should definitely show up to the lectures if you want to pass anything. It all builds on itself.
If you are taking this class you are probably an undergrad that believes they're good enough to go to med school. I am built different (a chad amongst men) and I got an A, so ill give you pointers on how to get one too. Take a light class load this semester, solely focus on this class, read outside of class hours, and cry when no one is looking.
Guys, do his suggested homework problems. I didn't on the first exam and I did horrible. I passed his second exam because of them. This is a hard class. Do not be an idiot like me and take this class with other hard classes. YOU WILL REGRET IT. I have never been so stressed in my life. This is a class you can pass but it will take most of your time
I do not think SI helped me much. She explained concepts that he already explained and I felt like the problems she gave us were too simple. DO the textbook problems!! That's how you will pass. You need practice. Also, it's okay to cry. I know I did a bunch of times.
If you do not work or have no other classes, youll be fine. I have his final in 2 days and this man gave NO GUIDANCE literally none. He just said know genetics what does that even mean. This class is a serious danger to your mental health. Make sure you take it with easy classes.
Professor Waddell knows his material very well, however when it comes to working with students, I believe he does not understand from a students point of view. His exams he has are 75 questions that are VERY difficult. It takes him forever to reply to emails and to grade. Some tips for this class is to STUDY and pay attention to the slides.
He will make you feel like you're going to fail the class but at the end he applies a huge curve. If you do around average in tests, and do hws, then you'll probably pass with a C.
Dr. Waddell takes the time in lecture to provide you with information you should know. With online slides and a video presentation of those slides to review before class; very beneficial. Lecture turns into a discussion which I love and it helps you to understand the material better.
Professor Waddell is a good guy and extremely knowledgeable on the information he teaches but the class is very tough. There was no homework assignments, only tests, with each one being at least 75 questions. The lectures go into serious detail and you are required to spend A LOT of time reviewing outside of class if you want an A. Overall not bad.
He was very kind, but a tough prof. Come with questions and listen to what he says and know the textbook well. The entire grade is based on 3 exams that are over 75 questions and ridiculously in depth. I had to use info from more advanced classes to pass the tests. He does curve them but they are very in depth. He was alright
IF YOU TAKE THIS CLASS, BE PREPARED TO STUDY. Professor Waddell makes no qualms about it: this class is hard, but you get out what you put in. Prof. Waddell really knows what he is talking about and he expects you to as well. It is a lot of information, but it is doable if you put the time in. The majority of your grade is from the exams, so STUDY!
3 Exams, 4 HW's, no quizzes/drops. This class is HARD ie: avg 50-60%, but is later curved. Waddell is super cool. Seems a bit intimidating when he gets quiet and requires class to answer, but he is making you learn. Go to class or you will fail. Everything on chalkboard is fair game, SI will help. I only went to exam reviews tho. No ppts just FYI.
Worst professor ever! No sympathy at all this professor makes me hate unf. IF YOU ARE TAKING OTHER CLASSES YOU WIKK STRUGGLE
This class is extremely hard. Please don't put yourself in this position to take this class unless you are a science/health major. It requires a lot of studying and time/effort put into this class. HARD tests (like no joke). Very nice man however not a nice class if you just need it as a gen-ed. Please take my advice and just don't take this class.
DO NOT TAKE BIOLOGY WITH THIS PROFESSOR. This guy has terrible communication skills. First class in tells us all, this class is hard, most of you will fail, or withdrawal. Really encouraging.... Keep in mind there's a curve at the end of the semester he applies but of course doesn't communicate this. Very hard course.
Instead of teaching the rules to solve example problems, he would ask the class how we thought we might solve it. Was a little condescending if you did not know the answer. Provided examples were MUCH simpler than the homework and test questions, but he curves A TON. Office hours and SI were needed to understand how to do the HW. Record lectures!
If you have the option to choose another professor I believe it would benefit your sanity greatly. But know leaving this class you absolutely WILL know bio 1 material. He makes you think you're going to fail and then applies a massive curve at the end. If you aren't actively studying you will be humbled. Plan, prepare- and DON'T try to "wing it."
Took him over the summer. Had to work hard for my grade, but I enjoyed it. He doesn't use ppts, only chalkboard which I liked bc you know exactly what to take notes on. Study guides for tests are helpful but know the concepts in and out. Fat curve at the end of the semester.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, if you want to have gray hair. Si got a question wrong and he did not give a good explanation to elaborate on how to do the question. Exam question was added that we never learned in class. HW is nothing like the EXAM.
do not take this professor that is all i can say
Tough professor, but I learned a lot from him. If you're in the class be prepared to learn because everything he says is applicable. He has the most refined course in Biology by a long shot.
Genetics at UNF is extremely hard. No matter the professor you take you will grow grey hair and study 24/7 by the end of the semester. Dr. Waddell is super tough but he makes you learn the information for the exams and if you go to SI and office hours you will pass. Also he curves all the exams and gives extra points at the end of the year.
he has 3 exams not including the final, and the lecture is ONLY on those exams. if you do not get a C on at least one, you get an F. he does give a curve applied to the exams at the end of the year, but you do not get to see the curve as he adds it privately. I had a D on canvas but in my final grade I had a C. nice dude, tough class/prof/grader.
