Very good profesor. Very easy also. Tries hard to explain the concepts, and answers questions nicely.
He is a very good teacher, and there are far more worse teachers on campus. I say he is in the top 10 math teachers on campus. He has some trouble explaining complicated topics. However, in the end, he gets it across. TAKE HIS COURSE
Very nice guy, his class was harder than other math classes of the same course, but I think I learned a lot more.
Not clear on some questions. Not good with explanations
Very good teacher, if you get the chance to take his class then you should because you'll probably get an A or B in it anyways.... Oh ya professor Lyons sucks ass, so DON'T take his classes he is a jerk off....
Great class, tests based from homework and stuff in class. Prepares class well. Final based on previous tests. Straight forward with no tricks.
Excellent lectures. Questions on tests and final exam covered thoroughly in class. Subject is somewhat difficult but this professor makes it easier to understand.
Great teacher. Explainations are very clear. He's willing to spend half the class answering questions if you're unsure of a point -- just make sure to ask (If you don't ask, you'll be left in the dark). In addition, he has quizzes every week, so you'll know right away what you don't understand -- and he'll go over the quiz in class if you just ask.
If you don't do the assigned homework, consider yourself dead. That's all there is to say.
You must do the all the recommended homework. If you copy down everything he writes on the board, you don't have to read the book to do the homework. His quizes and exams are straight forward. They are very similar to the homework.
His lectures summarize each section in the book. He is really eager to help you. The assigned homework and quizzes are very similar to exams. NO CURVE.
He has trouble explaining complicated concepts, but he does well explaining them overall. BEWARE: He grades leniently on quizzes BUT is a Nazi on tests (which worths 10x more), probably because he only allows mistakes once. A minor arithmetic would get half the points taken off. :-/ There is no curve, so if you screw up, you're screwed.
Great teacher. Explains material very thoroughly and will spend class time answering questions. Just make sure you ask cause if you don't you'll get left behind and you cannot afford to do that in this class.
Math is not my forte therefore I am predisposed to not enjoy or like the subject in general. Mr. Walnut explains things clearly and you always know when you have quizes or tests. Nothing new, must do the homework and is definitel helpful to attend the classes in order to succeed. Does not post midtrerm grades, kind of annoying.
He is very good on explaining the materials. I don't blame him for the grade i was expecting, however, he is a good math professor to take during your full semester...
If u plan go to class and do the assigned homework, Walnut is a great prof. He goes fast, but is thorough, and will stop for questions along the way. He is strict, but not unapproachable. Fair grader. Lots of quizzes and tests, but all based on HW, few surprises. Great when he cracks the occasional joke in class. Would recommend for the serious.
Doesn't curve or give extra credit but if you want to understand the material he is very good at explaining things and working out math problems.
The best math teacher I have ever had. He is very helpful and his notes (which he uploads online) are excellent. Just do the practice problems he assigns and you almost can't help but do well on the test. Also, as of Summer 2007, allows TI89s and other calculators to be used for exams.
Same as below. Took him for 114 (as well as 113) and he allows graphing calculators for exams. Excellent professor and I highly recommend you take him. Good sense of humor, too, though some might not appreciate calculus-related jokes very much. Oh well.
Its my second time taking calc 3 but I like Walnut, I learn things from this guy that I didn't even know last time I took it with another guy. This dude is very clear but tends to watch the clock more than the board hes writing on.
Nicest teacher I ever met. He is crystal clear when teaching. Unlike a lot of professors, he goes slow and is extremely comprehensible. With math, this is a great advantage since math teachers are usually all over the place and all over the board.I am serious when I say he is the PERFECT teacher. You can't do any better than him! I miss his teachin
I had Professor Walnut over the Summer for matrix algebra. The class was fun but sometimes soporific, since it was in the late afternoon. I didn't study much but still got an A. Highly reccomend!!
Awesome teacher!!! Extremely talented in teaching math. Explains all the concepts crystal clear. Exams are not too hard. He allows a 3 by 5 card. Love his class.
Very good teacher, explains everything you need to know in class. Everything you learn is addressed in class before exams. There will be almost no surprises on a test. Homework correlates directly with class. Polite, clear, and thorough. Notes from class are scanned and put online. Allows a cheat sheet on exams because he does not drop lowest exam.
Strange guy.Going to his office wont help much cos he wont tell u the answers, he said think bout it, but id thought bout it 3,4 times still didnt get it so that was y i was in his office. Hw were collected, very hard. Tests were ok, two tests, one final. First test,no surprise, second test, yes, not too bad though.Good teacher, but he made me feel dum
Jus took his final, :( was so hard. But he said n curve, no dropping. Hard teacher since math290 is hard. Not really polite like other ppl said. Not helpful. First test was easy, but he tricked u, because 2 test and the final was hard. Good luck if you decided taking him for 290. I dont kno how he taught other subject so I cant judge. :(
i noticed in 290 that there was a huge jump in the degree of difficulty and abstractness in the material covered between exam 1 and exam 2 - prof walnut is a nice guy, and a good prof, but the class was harder than i had anticipated -never been exposed to this sort of mathematics b4, as such didnt know how to engage the material and study propery
He's one of the worst teacher i'd ever had. I'm an all A's student but got a B from his class brught my GPA down :( I worked so hard in his class so what Im writing here is my honest thought. I took other profs in that spring semester, they were all nice, but david nuts was the real a**.2 exams,1 final tough grader, played favorite!!!
Try to disregard the other poor comments about 290. They are based solely on the merit of their grade as opposed to what they learned. He taught me an extraordinary amount in such a condensed period of time. His class was indeed difficult, but what is the point of college without such trials? Absolutely amazing teacher, polite, kind, and brilliant
Polite? Haha. He was careless, rude and mean. He was smart with his subject, but he didn't put his heart into teaching. He made his students feel stupid when goin to his office. He squeezed in last minute materials n expected us to kno for the final. Wasn't helpful at all especially wit chap 4,5. I studied everything on my own!!!
I heard other people said 290 was hard, yes, it turned out to b very hard. The fact that Walnut was teaching it made it even harder to understand. He was useless when it came to explaining some difficult abstract concepts. If your math background is strong, then take him, if not you will suffer in hell. He is not as nice as the other comments said.
Very clear instructor, would always answer questions comprehensively and was helpful in office hours. Also responsive via email. Class was Advanced Calculus smashed into 4.5 weeks, and Walnut did a fine job of making that painful experience both bearable and fruitful. He really likes drawing pictures to illustrate points, which is very nice.
hard teacher, not very polite. He thinks he's the best, very cocky. U'll learn something in class, but it's not all that. I think the good comments he posted them himself or something like that. 290 is already hard, but he is not good at explaining abstract concepts, n he is not helpful either. Not recommended
Dr. Walnut likes to teach theory over application and this was an applied math course, but he was very clear in his explanations. He was very lenient on tests and even gave some bonus points but he is merciless on homeworks. Luckily, he is very helpful during office hours and will answer your homework questions providing you attempted it.
I love this Professor! Goes over every problem he will test and quiz you on. I took MW class and there was a quiz every W. He gives 15 quizzes based directly from the hw and only takes the best 10. Three exams which are curved by about 10% and the final. Really nice guy. Always go to class the book is no help if you don't. Posts all his notes
Easy class. He posts the notes on his website. I only attended recitation classes and got an A easily.
Walnut makes this class great! He is very clear in his notes and he posts them online, along with all the quizzes. His tests cover only what is on the homework and quizzes, there are no surprises. He drops the lowest three quizzes, but does not curve tests. I would definitely recommend taking him for Math 213.
Very good professor. I enjoyed going to his lectures. Make sure you go to each lab and take your quizzes. Doing the homework will help in doing well in the class. Take advantage of the the note cards during tests and review well.
This course is very useful in study of advanced mathematics such as real analysis and abstract algebra. The professor is nice and the HW is interesting. I got an A+ in this course. Strongly recommend.
NICE INTRO TO REAL ANALYSIS. THE TEXT IS BAD.BABY RUDIN SHOULD BE A GOOD REFERENCE
TESTS WERE HARD. okay well the first two weren't. but the final killed. he's a good lecturer though and quizzes are fair.
Excellent professor. Clear explanations during lectures and extremely helpful if you ask him questions. Gives in class time to work on problems in the book so you basically get office hours every class. Tests are pretty similar to homework but he picks the harder questions so go over those a couple times and you should be good.
Dr. Walnut might be the best math professor at GMU. Clear, concise, test questions straight from the homework, and very willing to help. Super friendly and approachable. Practice the hw and mymathlab questions and you should pass with ease. I highly recommend him
Not easy by any means, but that's just the nature of the course. With Walnut, do the homework and study hard, otherwise the tests are tricky. Don't be deceived by how easy the quizzes are; he picks intermediate-level questions for the tests. But again, you should be just fine if you do all of the homework.
Walnut is the best prof I've EVER had. I am horrible at math, however, pulled off a C solely because of his approach to teaching. He is more than willing to help students and he actually cares. The course is hard, but if you put in the effort, you'll pass. Just do the homework and invest in MyMathLab. Take him!!!
NICE FOURIER! STEIN'S BOOK IS ALSO FASCINATING. LEARN A LOT BASIC HARMONIC ANALYSIS FROM WALNUT'S CLASS
EASY ADV. CAL.II, FINSH ALL HW AND YOU WOULD GET A+
Very easy Fourier theor. Should be an undergrad course
Amazing professor! Knows what he is teaching and couldn't be any clearer. Is ready to help whenever you ask him. The class itself was hard as it is all about writing proofs and he was a tough grader. It looks like he curved the final grades. He also dropped the lowest assignment scores. The best math teacher I've had at Mason!
Great professor who made complicated material pretty easy to understand. You did have to work in the class, but he was readily available if you had any questions.
Very organized teacher. The class itself was hard because of the material but he's the best professor to teach it. Very helpful at office hours. Weekly assignments were very challenging but definitely prepared you for the exams. I struggled through but passed with a C. He curved final grade.
He knows that it's difficult material and he cuts you a lot of slack. The class isn't easy but the professor is easy on you.
He knows his stuff and breaks down tough concepts into a more understandable form and allows students to practice during lecture. This is calculus so the only way to pass is by doing lots of problems. He does not assign homework. The grade is comprised of 3 exams and a final. Seems like a tough grader at first but always gives some type of curve.
Okay bottom line: This class is really hard. But Prof. Walnut is always there to help, he holds regular office hours. And trust me, if you come to office hours regularly-he notices the effort you are putting in. It will pay off in the end.
Very nice guy, but this class was super hard. Flipped classroom style, which I hated. The key to pass is to go to office hours because Walnut will give lots of hints on the assignments. The tests were also straight forward and he gave lots of extra credit. He is probably the best teacher for this course
Great teacher. He uploads online lectures, which is where some of his exam problems come from. The exams are very easy, the in-class group work (25%) is hard, and his homework (40%) is very challenging. He drops the lowest hws. My only complaint is that he took until the last few weeks to grade everything and you have to go to class to get credit
Professor Walnut is incredible. He's great at explaining concepts and is extremely nice. A large majority of the grade was based on assignments. Only a little was from tests. He even posted his notes online. My only problem was that he sometimes spent too long on one concept. If you have the opportunity, definitely take Professor Walnut.
The semester isnt over yet but this professor is seriously awesome. I took him for 290, repeating the course because I did horrible first time. He was able to help me understand concepts I struggled with so much before. If you want to know to proof write, TAKE HIS CLASS!!
This class was probably the hardest math class Ive ever taken. Walnut knows his stuff and will do everything to make sure you understand the material. Hes awesome! Take him!
Professor Walnut is a real gem in my opinion. This class is very refined, so he knows exactly what students struggle with and places extra emphasis when needed. This class is very foundational and is supposed to change your perspective on math. I think it does that with flying colors.
Best Prof. I have had in a long time. A great teacher that puts in the extra effort at all times, he wants his students to succeed and I think that is the most important attribute a teacher can have. He explains concepts thoroughly and assigns questions that enforce the understanding. Overall great person and teacher.
Dr Walnut was a fantastic professor. He obviously put in a lot of work to make his lesson plans connect and each lecture build off of the last. His explanations were clear and he was always willing to put in extra time if you needed it.
Amazing! This material was not easy whatsoever, and Walnut is so kind and makes the material easy to understand. This man is amazing!
I had to withdraw from this class because I kept failing the tests. I took this class asynchronous. Big mistake. You're teaching all the material to yourself. The lectures, recitations, and homeworks are done online. Exams are done IN PERSON. Speaking of exams, that's all you're graded on. YOU'RE ONLY GRADED ON EXAMS. Try your very best in this.
This is the hardest course I have ever taken, and the first course I have ever failed, or even come close to failing. 90% of your final grade is based on tests, you better be a good test taker and memorizer, because that is about all this class requires. You will also be required to watch 8+ hours of lecture notes a week (which do not help at all).
Professor Walnut is an extremely talented teacher. His lectures provide great understanding to his students. Calc 2 comprises of difficult material and there is a lot of work, however Professor Walnut does a great job in making it manageable.
This class is utterly difficult. Professor does a great job at explaining stuff but the content itself is hard to grasp. There were too many exams.
Not a bad choice for this class. Hard class but not really because of him. Very kind and receptive to questions but hard to access over email. Lots of HW that are lengthy and challenging but he helps if you ask. Exams were very fair and predictable. He records and posts his lectures. Overall challenging class but he is a good professor for it.
Prof. Walnut is a very pleasant and soft spoken person. Often funny! HW counts for 30% of grade and 3 quizzes (one dropped) and cumulative final. Overall decent teacher. I get the sense that he really cares but maybe needs a vacation soon. He does LOTS of examples during lectures. Tends to go a bit fast for me.
One of the best math profs. at this school. If you are taking 214, take him. His recorded lectures are kind of bad, but you can get by just going to class and doing practice problems. Just go to class, do the quizzes, take the exams and you'll be fine.
This professor cares about his students. Provides lecture videos which directly cover the topic, has quizzes every week based on the worksheets we do in class, and the exam is entirely based on all the types of problems we worked with in the worksheets, so no surprises at all. He drops several quizzes as well. Highly recommend this professor.
Dr. Walnut makes differential equations not so bad. The videos are very theory heavy and go into great detail on the topics, but the worksheets are pretty easy and show what will be on the quizzes and exams (extremely similar problems). Doesn't require attendance but he tries to make the lectures fun and interactive. Super nice!!!
I have high regard for Dr. Walnut in spite of failing MATH316 with him. Adv. cal 1 was difficult for me, but Dr. Walnut made the content relatively accessible. Neither class was easy, but no other professor could have done a better job. The flipped classroom in MATH316 was very effective - so long as you engaged with it.
Walnut is an amazing professor. His style of teaching differential equations is very organized and intuitive and makes it easy to learn. His tests were very easy, and homework has solutions available on the website. Make sure you dedicate time to his course because we had to watch lecture videos, complete homework, and take a quiz every week.
My class was a flipped classroom. Watch all the lecture videos and take notes. Show up to lectures and complete the ungraded worksheet. If you do all the work you will get an A. The midterms and finals are almost exactly the same as the practice exams he gives you to study with. Great professor and enjoyed the class.
Enjoyed the rigor of the course a lot, especially when he provides lots of opportunities to provide insight (office hours, email, or during the lecture) on solving proofs for the homework. I feel much more comfortable with proof writing compared to MATH 300.
Have no idea how he has a high rating. be prepared to teach urself cuz he treats his lecturers like recitations & if u ask him a question you'll get a "did you watch the videos on bb?" Not to mention his videos are unwatchable. His exams are hard and he's a stingy grader. I got an answer right & he marked off 4 points bc my "interpretation is off"
I took diff eq. He did a flipped classroom style with lecture videos for hw and worksheets in class. By the third week, 2/3 of the class stopped coming. I ended the class with an 89% and asked about an A- in an email but he brushed me off, very frustrating since I learned nothing from him the entire semester. Midterms were all fair. Final was hard
He is the worst DE professor and he doesn't give partial credit. I dont understand how he got this rating on rate my professor. I needed 1 grade to pass the class with a B-, which is required for my major and he didn't even be helpful with that.
Best Math Professor I've had. Weekly HW and quizzes, but the HW you have unlimited attempts and he drops like 5 quizzes. Exams are easier than the HW and his lectures are videos that you watch outside of class. It's ok to miss a class and he's very helpful if you have questions. If you complete your assignments and watch his videos you'll do good.
Great professor :) Online videos required to watch before class can take up a lot of time sometimes. The worksheets done in class are probably more difficult than his tests, so be sure to understand them. He provides a ton of content to use to study. His exams are just like the previous ones. Majority of the grade (worksheets) comes from completion
Prof Walnut was okay. Personally didn't like his active learning set up. You're expected to watch his lecture videos and come into class prepared to do practice problems. But his exams are similar to his old exams. Just study those, do the online hws (which gives you the solutions), attend recitiation, and do the in-class ws and you'll be fine.
Grade is distributed by 80% HW, 20% final exam. Attend his lectures (even though it's optional) because he provides REALLY good insight to the material. I like the way he structures his weekly homework as well because it's like a "puzzle" and he gives you enough hints to figure it out while still being challenging.
Lectures were super helpful. MATH-214 is a difficult subject, but having a good teacher made up the difference. I can't recommend enough to take fullest advantage of all the resources he and the TAs provide. Attendance is not mandatory (graded worksheets found/submitted online) but will also greatly help with comprehension.
Basically, his class is a flipped classroom. You are expected to watch his lecture videos before class. No hate to the professor, but the GTA that I had "Nick" teaches better than the Professor 5x. In my opinion, the subjects aren't too difficult if you put in the work, but his exams are hard imo.
He is a good professor! The thing is that his classroom is a flipped-style classroom and not many people will like it, but overall, he gives feedback; the only downside is that the pre-recorded videos were a little old/slow-paced.
Great professor, one of the only professors who does flipped classrooms well. You're expected to learn beforehand, and all you do every week is a worksheet + recitation, so its a LOT of practice. The practice is very very similar to his exams though, and you can use cheat sheets so the class is not too bad if you put the effort in. Def recommend.
Very nice class, he really makes sure you understand the content. Attendance wasn't mandatory but you learn a lot by going (even for the flipped lecture style).
He's definitely one of the harder profs, but his class is very enjoyable. He's witty and funny, and generally lectures well. Weekly homeworks for 60% and 2 exams for 20% each. Again, they're not easy, but he tries his best to support students and gives lots of hints on the assignments. I'm taking him again for 316, and I'm quite excited, honestly
