Stuffy and opinionated
Don't take him if your brain is clouded. He will want a lot of writing from the soul.
Nice guy but I dont like his teaching style. It is unorthodoxed and hard to understand.
Bro Ward takes a very different approach to learning than most people. He is not a teacher to take if you want an easy A. He is the kind of teacher to take if you are serious about learning your major for future professional use. He teaches true skills.
Very enthusiastic. He really cares and really wants to help people learn.
Brother Ward is a teacher that, if you enjoy pushing your own limits and finding out more about yourself, you will love. He truly cares about his students, each of them, and wants them to be better than they thought their personal best could be. I will quite happily take another class from him
Teaches english like it's a philosophy class. Basically what it comes down to is that he should be teaching philoshophy, not english. Too much deep thinking and not enough writing skills.
he is a very nice guy and not intiminating at all. his way of teaching though is just very different. he is really into deep thinking with his writing. to do well in his class you really got to get into it and participate.

This profesor changed my life! He has a genuine concern for his students and is very generous with his time.
This is a life-changing course...seriously. You will discover more about yourself than you thought possible. He does have high expectations of his students though.
That...he was a good teacher. He really makes you use your noggin, or brain whatever. He really applies what he teaches to the gospel.
Bro. Ward is an awesome teacher. One of my most motivating courses i have ever had in college. Must pay attention and go to class to stay caught up though. I hate english with a passion and he was able to make it interesting to me. Very energetic and sincere.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Didn't learn anything from him. Doesn't teach english writing like he's supposed to, instead you spend more time memorizing philosophy and religion quotes. Hardly any notice for tests. Not very specific about requirements. Only gives out one or two A's a class.
Like the previous comment, a lot of time is spent on philosophy and trying to apply that philosophy to the gospel. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ENGLISH GRAMMER. He teaches from his own quotes, and inserpts from random sources. Very very few students above a B average and assingments hard to understand what he wants done. Use Caution!
Bro. Ward is absolutely amazing. Every day you attend you feel uplifted, not just spiritually but intellectually. His assignments require studying out in your mind not just DOING them to get done. If you enjoy writing this is the class for you. He works your brain overtime and you feel great after each and every class! YOU Determine the difficulty.
My mind is addicted to this class! The expectations make you strive to work harder. I have never felt so good about myself, especially when he really gets into his teaching. I think he has perfected the link between temporal and spiritual education. I will never forget the things I've learned about myself and my writing...
Ok. This guy really bugs me. He talks in a high pitched voice and goes on FOREVER when he gets distracted. He does not give you a syllabus and you have to guess what he wants because he does not explain himself.
Brother Ward is a great person but if you want a literature class where you learn about literature, you should probably look for a different teacher. His assignments are unclear and so are his expectations. There is no syllabus so have fun trying to figure out exactly what he wants. Plus, his assignments often come through email at the last nin.
OK this teacher is just insaine! You can dream about an A because you are never gonna get one. He is really hard to understand, he doesn't have a syllabus...all he does is talking about psychology...philosophy...everything besides English and grammar. So if you like to spend hours on papers and still not get an A good luck!
I would not recommend Brother Ward to anyone. As mean as that is, his teaching style is confusing and has nothing to do with Advanced Writing or whatever he may be teaching. He is a hard grader and you never know what he is expecting from your work. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!!!!!
OH MY GOSH!!!!! Do NOT take this high pitched evil professor. I'm not good at English in the first place but tried so HARD and still got a D- and i'm a 4.0 student! I heard a rumor that he doesn't give A's anyway. He thinks he's the greatest philiosopher this world has ever known. He cries when he reads his own papers/quotes! Never take him!!

He is completely biased and doesn't really grade what you do, it seems like he just grades on how much he likes you. Nothing is set, if you suck up well, then you should do great. Not fun, not useful, and please don't ever take him if you want to learn.
Brother Ward is an amazing professor. At first the class was really difficult and I wanted to drop, but if you stick with it it can really change your life. You have to want to learn and understand, and when you finally do your life will be blessed not only temporally in this class but in every other aspect.
Never again would I take a class from this teacher. Nor would I recommend him to anyone. He tries to tell you that the way you have lived and thought your whole life are wrong-- and even tells you to question the gospel.
Don't ever take this guy. It's not worth it and has no point when he teaches! Totally Useless!
I really didn't like his class at all. He was a nice guy, but a lot of what he said didn't make very much sense. No matter what you thought, you were wrong. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone and I'd never take a class from him ever again.
Its not very important
I throughly enjoyed taking Bro. Ward's class. It isn't easy because you actually have to THINK, but in the process you learn so much about you and the gospel. The spirit is in class and if you are really their to learn, with the right attitude, you will grow so much. I love this class and would recommend it to anyone that likes to think deep.
Brother Ward is a nice man who seems to be very passionate about the things he is teaching. Problem is the things he teaches has nothing to do with English. He doen't have a syllabus and I never felt that I knew what he wanted. He spent the majority of class lecturing about the learning model and trying to hold back tears of joy.
Unfortunately he was the only professor teaching E495. I'd take a different professor if available. He is unreasonable. His way of writing, thinking, and applying the gospel is the only correct way.
One of THE best teachers I have ever had. His classes can change your life. Can be tough, but doable, if you're willing to actually think and work. Extremely willing to help outside of class time, and cares a lot. He actually teaches how to think and write. Def take the computer section. Oh, and the 'no A's' rumor? Not true.
He is a nice man, but very hard to understand what he wants on the assignments. He will fill your inbox with assignment instructions but still, what he wants is unclear. He is extremely emotional and if you act like you are too, you should do ok. E-mail him lots with thoughts on the class and interpret the poems and things the way he sees them.
This class is extremely hard, but it is very rewarding as well. Great class!
Its basically a religion class, no course syllabus, no class structure. Hard to get a decent grade, you must participate alot to get any good grade.
Bro. Ward is a pretty good teacher. He has tons of class discussions so as long as you participate and give comments then you'll be fine. It does remind me a lot of a religion class though. Also, the work can sometimes be really confusing and tough, but afterward, you do see things in a new light.
Bro. Ward is an amazing professor. He works hard to help you in any way he can. A lot of what he does is philosophical so prepare to think hard. His class is difficult but I learned so much. He is a great professor.
I LOVE HIM!!!! IF I CAN I WOULD MAKE EVERYONE TO TAKE HIS CLASS.
I signed up for his C.S.Lewis class. I was so excited!!! But then, I went to class and he sobbed through the entire lesson about...I have no idea what. It didn't even feel spiritual, it was just too weird and emotional for me. SO I dropped the class. The only time I ever dropped a class because I didn't like the professor.
Bro ward is incredible. He teaches in a completely different way than anything I've exeriences, but I loved it. He truly cares about what he teaches and the students in his classes. Always willing to help you when you need. I learned so much. Takes effort, but is not difficualt if you pay attention and do the work. great class!
With Bro. Ward it is love him or hate him. I was part of the latter group. There were no class guidelines, we were never sure what we were supposed to do. He loves the sound of his own voice and makes a lot of outrageous comparisons. The work wasn't hard but it was painful to listen to him for long because of his personality. Not reccomended at all
Frustrating class. No syllabus or structure and it seemed to be all about him. Don't bother trying to figure out his writing requirements because they change each class.
He had no structure to the class, no syllabus, and leaves you guessing about what he really wants in your papers, oh and doesn't give you any guidelines and it is literally painful to sit through one of his lectures. He seemed very self-absorsbed and loves to hear his own voice, and thinks that he is a genius. Would never recommend him.
If you love to write you probably won't like this class. There's not a ton of writing and the writing you do do is graded in a very opinionated way. Never knew what to expect. Started our final paper at midterms and still had no idea what I was writing about a week before finals. More of a philosophy discussion class than writing. Abstract thinking
David Ward Changed my life. He knows the purpose of writing. If you want to stop being frustrated with writing take this class, you will develop a passion fro the writing that you did not know you had.
David Ward Changed my life. He knows the purpose of writing. If you want to stop being frustrated with writing take this class, you will develop a passion for writing that you did not know you could have.
Br. Ward is a magnificent teacher. you do have to put effort in to do well in his class, but if you put in the effort it will show. Br. Ward cares more about you learning, then the process of learning. Prove to him that you've learned what is being discussed in class, and he will give you credit for it. by Far, my favorite teacher on campus.
"He had no structure to the class, no syllabus, and leaves you guessing about what he really wants in your papers" Could not agree more. Anyone on here that says he changed their lives, must have a pretty crappy life. He needs to get with the program and stop talking about your marriage in class. I do not care
Brother Ward cares about education and his students! I spent the entire semester frustrated at his particular type of grading, and then finally asked him about it, and he totally changed it! He really does care about his students. Yes, it is a hard class, but this is college and it's time to grow up. Class was slightly more religion than writing.
If you want to be confused because the man won't write a darn syllabus, then take him. His assignments are unclear and you are never quite sure what you're being graded on which becomes problematic toward the end of the semester.
Brother Ward is my favorite teacher! My writing is head and shoulders beyond where it used to be as a result of him. Sometimes you'll have to ask him to clarify a point, but that's no big deal. If you want to learn, you will learn from Brother Ward. If you don't try to understand what he's teaching, you'll fail miserably! Highly recommended!
I am a no-nense kind of person, and can't stand people who like the sound of their own voice - such as the case with Brother Ward. Overly-emotional man, no structure in grading or syllabus. Never knew when things were due, never knew what he expected of us (I wasn't the only student in my class who thought this). Wouldn't recommend him.
Bro Ward is a really great teacher, and the work wasn't hard, but there was a lot of it. You are REQUIRED to take notes everyday, because you turn them in, and report on them the next class. There is a lot of reading of boring, wordy papers, and that was hard for me. You then had to write insight papers on those papers.
Bro Ward is awesome! I had a hard time at first with his teaching style for CS Lewis, but once I got over his quirks I loved it! It's really more of a religion class than an English class, but it's totally worth taking. He's super understanding and helpful. I absolutely recommend this class.
I took Brother Ward for Tolkien to Homer. His thoughts are very interesting, but you never know what you are being graded on. Also you never actually get into the textbooks until the last few weeks of class. I would not recommend taking his class, but he does have good suggestions for interesting reading material.
Brother Ward is a pretty terrible teacher. I took his C.S. Lewis class expecting so much, but you really could get more out of the class if you just read Lewis by yourself. He cries too much about who knows what, teaches less of Lewis and more of his opinions, and writes no syllabus. I could get more of Lewis if I read him alone. Would not recomend
I took C.S. Lewis, and all I can say is this: if you want to take a class where all you hear is very little of Lewis and a whole lot more of the teacher's personal opinions on Lewis, listen to him cry about everything, and be confused constantly due to the lack of a clear syllabus, take his class. Otherwise, just read C.S. Lewis for yourself.
He has no syllabus. That should've been my red flag. You have no idea what he's looking for. He gave no feedback about how to improve. When I did my final project, he said they were too "Sunday School" and that I needed to go deeper, more into the unexplored. I had a 91 at the end but got a B+. How can you fight that with no syllabus? Stay away.
It took a month to get used to his weird, confusing and somewhat boring teaching style. I was always e-mailing him or his TA because he was not clear as to what he wanted and I would see my grade drop 20% in a day because he thought I didn't meet his expectations, when in reality I did exactly as he wanted. His tests make no sense a lot of times
At first, I was excited to learn about the Romantics because that is what the class was about. I was greatly disappointed. In the first 10 weeks, we only read three poems. The rest of the time was spent on his very particular way of learning via his "Insight Pattern." A cool pattern actually, but not when it is the only thing he ever teaches
He is a good teacher, I know that his teaching methods are different but are not bad. If you really study and keep reading and do your part, everything is going to be ok. I think this was an easy A. There is not many homework just reading. I recommend him if you are willing to do your part.
He is a good teacher, I know that his teaching methods are different, but if you are willing to do your part and read, everything is ok. It was an easy A, and I actually learned a lot. His is not that bad, it is just very relax. I recommend him if you are willing to do your part and read.
I NEVER knew what I was supposed to be learning from him. The class was unorganized and ridiculous. I feel like Brother Ward did not respect his students; he determined the final grade, regardless of your actual grade, kept you after class every day, and if you thought something other than what he taught, you were wrong.
Bro. Ward had a different method of teaching. This class changes based on direction of in-class discussions, so it was a bit disorganized. There were regular emails which were helpful, but there was no laid-out calendar. Expect a lot of frustration with this class if you need structure. The final journal may make your last few weeks overwhelming.
Very disorganized, assignments are unclear. I also feel as I have just read others say, that if you think differently than he does he will argue his point and never do exactly what he is trying to teach us to do and hear out new ideas.
To quote his own words in an email he sent out: I realize, as I was reminded in class, that I said we'd take this exam next class." He changes too much. His assignments are not very clear.
His class will challenge you. If you fully invest yourself you will grow a lot. He's very helpful and interesting; I didn't want the course to end. I followed him perfectly, but depending on personality some people don't like him. If you're fine with less structure you'll love him.
One of the most brilliant teachers ever! My mind was blown every class, he helped me see things in ways that I never had before, made me want to see and hear more of what is good in life
As posted many times before, assignments are unclear and has a different teaching style. Because everyone did well on the final, he made the final, which was initially worth 20% of your grade, worth roughly 1.7%. If you want an A, dont take his class. If you think differently than him, you are wrong, according to him. Avoid at all costs.
Many people have different views of the type of class Brother Ward has and you can take a lot from his class if you are willing to work. I have had him for 2 classes and they are hard but I have never learned as much in one class than I have from Brother Ward. My advise: If you take his class, be willing to change.
Brother Ward has a difficult class, the hardest part about his class is opening your mind to the beauty and profound nature of the world around us. Your mind will be blown everyday, IF YOU LET IT. He teaches by the spirit and you will grow more through his class than any you have ever taken. You will learn, and more importantly want to grow& learn.
Brother Ward's class was terrible. As everyone before me has already said, he isn't clear about what needs to be done, he is over the top with the spiritual stuff, and his way is the right way. If you don't think like him, you are wrong. Terrible teacher, terrible course.
DO NOT TAKE Brother Wards class. English used to be my favourite class but I now hate it. You never know what is expected of you in class, I never know what he wants on assignments. You have to take notes and hand them in, he records class. Ive been in his class for two months and all we talk about insights, and problems. classes are painful.
I took 2 courses (my first English class and CS Lewis) from David Ward 14 years ago and I still reflect on the way his teaching style and genuine concern affected my life. Perhaps those who had a difficult time in his class aren't comfortable looking inside themselves because that is what he will guide you to do. I urge you to at least try him out.
If his class was named problem solving, it would make more sense. The whole semester it was write to solve a problem; which would be great if we got to pick the problem we got to write about but we had use authors that he had given us through out the semester and how they related in a problem, and everyones problem came out to be the same.
You will learn a lot in this class, but Brother Ward messes with your grades to prove points and that drives me crazy. I have not completed this class yet, but if there was another one open at a time that I could take I would take another class.
Good man, terrible English teacher. Everything is theory. Tries to grade personal growth. Was so excited for C.S Lewis but we learn nothing about the man; it's a gospel class instead. Thank goodness I'm graduating, would never take him again. Semester can't end fast enough. So unhappy.
"If you love to write you probably won't like this class. There's not a ton of writing but the writing you do do is graded in a very opinionated way." Describes class perfectly. I love English and all of my English teachers, except Brother Ward. He tells students he wants them to break away from formulaic writing and gives students a new formula.
Brother Ward was very inspiring. You have to put forth real effort in this class, but it's worth it! Loved every minute of this class.
I really enjoyed this class and it did expand my thinking but didn't call for outrageous 10 page papers. The things I learned came a lot from discussions and some also from my writing. He is very fun to listen to and has a great sense of humor. I was stressing about college English but I really enjoyed my experience. He's not your typical teacher.
This teacher was great. Yes he graded hard, but that was for a learning purpose. He was very specific in his instructions and i learned a lot about writing and about life in general. however, if you want an easy class this is a 6 on a scale to 10. he is funny and i liked him a lot, but like i said you have to do good work for him to give you an A
I cannot believe the negative reviews I've read of Bro. Ward. Things like "too much about the spiritual" and "tries to make you rethink your way of writing". Heaven forbid you should actually learn something. David Ward is an incredible teacher who shows that deep learning is more important than working for a grade. Some people can't handle that.
Brother Ward is the most inspiring professor I have ever had. He taught me how to discover who I was, who I am, and who I want to be through studying and writing. I believe his diferent teaching methods are what we need here in our lives. He shows us how to gain insights into our personal lives. All around, he is the coolest dude
Went in expecting a typical English Lit class, got a gospel/philosophy class. Still learned a lot and enjoyed it, but it didn't feel like an English class. Brother Ward was very helpful and kind but he does grade more harshly. I do recommend the class to anyone not afraid of writing.
Brother Ward is a very loving, very caring teacher who structures his class around teaching skills instead of facts. He's always there for his students and often takes time out of his own day to discuss any concepts that were missed. The only real complaint that could be made is that his class is very non-traditional.
David Ward's English class plays a key role in gaining a genuine education. He is an inspired man who will love you as his student. The course is not a complex one. Ward guides you through it all. He has a great sense of humor and uses it to teach more effectively.
Bro Ward's class is not for those who do not want to learn. This is not going to be an easy A class but if you really want to learn Bro. Ward is wonderful professor to have. When I went to class I always felt my opinions were valued. This class is going to cause you to learn and grow it ways you never expected.
Absolutely excellent class! I have learned to love writing from this class. He is not easy, and you do have to work for it, but if you do, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! I did not enjoy writing at all before this class, now I am interested and can write. He teaches in a very unique way, and is extremely helpful especially those who struggle with english
Brother Ward is the kind of teacher who absolutely loves the subjects discussed in the classroom. His enthusiasm and thoughtful approach to each element of the course is contagious. I loved attending his class because I knew that I would learn something new everyday. He cares about learning in a way that doesn't get in the way of education.
Brother Ward is the kind of teacher that really cares about what the class is discussing each day. I looked forward to going to class because I knew I would leave with my mind greatly expanded. He knows how to teach without inhibiting a true learning experience.
If you want an easy 'A', this class is not for you. Brother Ward will challenge your current methods of thinking and learning. He will push you to be better than your previous best. Brother Ward will not just "hand out" grades, but will give you plenty of opportunity to improve and EARN the grade you want and/or need.
Confusing, grades based on his feelings and philosophies instead of actual writing formats. Doesn't give constructive personal feedback. You come away completely messed up in the research, thesis based writing. A former TA from English dept. checked my paper while reading Brother Wards notes. They said he was not teaching the writing curriculum.
Bro. Ward's classes have changed my life. Not only have I acquired better writing skills and techniques, I've been taught how to use writing and reading to enhance the way I think and live. It isn't spoon-fed education. It's not standardized or like any other English class you'll take. They're not always "easy", but his classes are always worth it.
Great teacher. Seems more like a class that deals with problems rather than English. But really this leads you to becoming a better English writer. Unique and life changing if principles are applied.
I would highly recommend this class, especially if writing is hard for you. Brother Ward paces and grades this class on personal and individual improvement. The class is typically small and there is a good balance between lecture and discussion. I found every class to be insightful and inspiring.
First and foremost, Brother Ward doesn't concern himself with the fluff and nonsense and busywork of most other classes. This class was hard. I did very well in it, but I had to do more work and go through more personal growth than I ever had for a class before. If you're not prepared to do that, then don't take it. If you are, you won't regret it.
I absolutely loved Brother Ward's class! It was not easy, but the things we did really contributed to learning and growth. There were no assignments just for "busy work." It was my favorite English class my entire college career. It's faith-promoting rather than doubt-filling.
I greatly enjoyed Bro. Wards class and him as a teacher. I tell everyone who hasn't taken this course yet to do so with Bro. Ward. He won't spoon feed you everything that you need to know or that is expected. Although frustrating for some- I found it to be a very refreshing, challenging, real world approach to education. Highly recommended teacher
He not only gives you genuine education, but will lead you to know how to get the most out of all your education. No other class have I noticed the expansion of my knowledge and understanding. He doesn't depend upon a traditional text book, but lets his instruction live through regular emails. He pushes hard for personal learning not just grades.
Brother Ward made me feel welcome to each class. He answered every email I sent him in question about assignments and what not. I worked and got the grade I deserved. I love what I learned and I learned more about myself. I would encourage anyone to take his class.
Bro. Ward's class was unique. I had him for Major Authors-C.S. Lewis. The class was great We studied Lewis not just by reading through his works, but by studying major sections of them, evaluating them in class, and applying them to our lives. Only homework was 15 journal entries, of which only 5 were long. Not a typical class, but an excellent one
He is just a difficult teacher to please. We had to re-write so many papers over and over and I never got a better grade. Overall a disappointment of a class.
FDENG201 was probably the best class I've ever taken in my college experience. I felt the Spirit more in his class than my religion class that semester. You have to be willing to think outside the box in his class, but it is worth it! I recommend him to all my friends and acquaintances. Take his class! You won't regret it.
This professor is great! There are a few things you should know, though. He gives out pop quizzes on the reading so don't slack off on any reading, he expects you to read the material four or five times at least. He also expects a lot from you, writing assignments should be unique and creative. But, I loved the class!
Brother Ward is a fantastic teacher. He helped me learn more about myself through the things we were reading for the class. I'm glad I didn't check RMP before I signed up for his Intro to Literature class because if I had I might not have taken his class and I might have missed a really good opportunity to improve myself. VERY highly recommended.
He has this idea that he wants you to "write for yourself." But he will grade you like you are an english major. He wants you to succeed but he has no problem being rude about it. I have gotten low on multiple papers and when I try to ask for feedback it's always dismissed. I feel I write bomb papers until I get my grade. How do I possibly succeed?
Brother Ward is amazing. He's hilarious & I loved going to his class. It's definitely not the easiest but it's worth it! He actually wants you to grow in your learning & make it a blast as well. 300 notes per class, but it's super easy. Just do your homework & follow his instructions & all will be fine. He also sounds like Rex from Toy Story
Bro. Ward is probably one of the best professors I have ever had. He is inspirational and, if you let him, can help you no only better your writing skills but become a better person. His classes are definitely not for everyone. If you have a bad attitude and aren't willing to work, don't take his class.
