Enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable. Homework is killer, though.
Easy tests, killer homework.
prof. webb is a nice guy...however, the lectures were boring. every once in a while there was an interesting demonstration, but for the most part i didn't have the urge to go. homework is super hard, will probably spend at least a few hrs on the 10 probs
He's a nice guy, but that's all ill give him. Aweful lecturer and homework is terribly hard. You can spend two whole days working on 20 probs and still get half done. Worst yet, quizes every week to replace midterms. The worst teacher for an undergrad.
Easy tests, homework is a huge time commitment. If you do all the homework and show up to all the lectures, pulling a C is fairly easy.
His mouth keeps moving but, is he saying the samething over and over or do you already know everything. He just doesn't know how to make lectue interesting. Very energetic amd nice though.
I had him for PHY9A last quarter; he's a pretty nice guy but an absolutely worthless lecturer. I stopped going to lecture by the end of the quarter because he doesn't explain things well; I managed to pull an A in the class though :)
+Energetic,+talkative,+helpful,+doesn't speak w/ accent, +grades on curve, -hard course, -lots of work, -time consuming....not a class to be taken for fun
Very energetic and talkative. Weekly quizes are on the level of easy to just OK, depending if you actually go to lecture. With online lecture notes and problems, the class was OK considering I didn't go to lectures. Good teacher, fairly easy.
Seems like he's killer for the 9 series, but I thought he was an excellent 7B professor. Quizes/final we're easy or at least do-able, nothing too hard. Best physics lecturer. Explains concepts well and helps you to practice them in class.
Great lecturer, good Power Point presentations, and generally makes sense; a bit unfair with deserving regrades. He makes the 7 series tolerable. Highly reccomended for any class.
moron that expects us to learn all of the material by reading the book. entire lecture consists of elaborating on finer points of readings. completely ineffective teaching style.
Terrible at lecturing....repeats things several times.
Best of all the 7 series lecturers. Bueno Suerte. Don't let the small stuff trip you up, concentrate on the big picture.
This teacher is probably the one that gives the hardest midterms and finals out of all the physics teachers, but he explain things clearly and gives great examples.
It's just weird. I can't learn from this guy!
Ineffective teaching methods and likes to play with his gadgets while lecturing. By the third lecture, half the class would leave after taking the weekly 20 min quizzes. Most of the learning comes from discussion lab with the TA's. Quizzes are ok, but final is pretty hard.
His lectures are fun but you dont learn from the lectures but more from the labs. HIs course is based on learning from the labs and not lectures. His quizzes per week are from fair to sometimes hard and easy. Usually i do pretty good on my quizzes. The final was fair and so was the class.
His lectures were okay. The course material was very difficult but I learned it very well. The most helpful professor I've had at UCD. He won't want to stop talking and helping you out in office hours. His HW had many errors, which was frustrating. His text book was okay, but I needed office hours.
one of the better physics professors. makes concepts clear and quizzes are fair.
We all know the physics 7 series sucks, but Webb does a pretty good job in lecture. He loves physics and is enthusiastic even at 7:30 in the morning on a Friday. Don't worry who you get for physics 7 cause it doesn't matter too much, but if Webb is available I'd take his him.
Too excited at 7:30 in the morning. Class lecture doesn't really help cause you learn in DL. Quizes were fairly easy. I didn't study and still got some Qs. If you do study you'll probably do better. Overall an ok teacher, just too early.
He's one of the better profs for Phy7 series. I like the clicker exCR, really made me learn and the knowledge sticks. DLs sucks as usual, but if you have a nice group the activities are actually now more fun. Quizzes are alright, never studied them and still got an A- avg going into the final.
He's a good professor with organized lecture slides. Sometimes, he has a hard time answering students' questions during lecture efficiently. So go to his office hours or TA's. Fair grading and extra credit with the clicker.
good. really enthusiastic and clear. seemed eager to help. wish there had been more lecture and LESS DL. DL is lame always. but as far as lecture goes Webb was v.good.
Fun, enthusiastic professor. Lectures for 7b are a lot more useful than those for 7a, and the finals he made for both classes were very easy compared to the quizes. Very approachable and polite, but he'll answer ANY question you have, even if its outside the scope of the class.
I like Webb cuz he really teaches u the material even though some of the homeworks are painful, but he is a good teacher.
nice professor with some great examples in lecture. the clicker questions really help (and they're extra credit) so i'd definitely recommend going to lecture. always willing to help and keeps lecture interesting
Material disorganized, but easy to understand
Prof. Webb teaches his upper division Physics class the same way he teaches lower division. Sometimes tends to talk to students like they are morons. Definitely knows his stuff, but has no idea how to convey the knowledge to students. Very nice guy, very energetic, but wastes energy into repeating same sentence over and over again. Homeworks and exams are unjustifiably difficult compared to amount of material covered in lecture. Needs to take upper division students (esp. physics majors) more seriously

Had him for thermo/statistical mechanics. Very friendly guy, REALLY HELPFUL, fair grader,I dont think anyone failed his class. The material was hard, but it gave me a good foundation for more quantum stuff.
I did not really like the remote clicker system. Sure its fun, but that time could be spent teaching physics. Maybe its just me, but I like it when a professor comes with prepared lecture noted and leaves with chalk all over his clothes. Not to say that he is bad, but there are better. I liked his thermo/stat mech book though.
I liked the way he teaches. He's very energetic. There's a lot of bad ratings for him, but for 7B i think that he was awesome. Especially for the 7 series because most of the professors for this series is bad. definantly take him if you need 7 series physics. He is a very nice guy and the class wasn't hard at all, and i'm not good at physics.
Much better than the 7A teacher! Lectures were funny and entertaining. His excitement and enthusiasm for the subject make lecture much more pleasant. Clicker questions can definitely give you points at the end, so participate. Quizzes were mostly fair, though a couple problems were graded a little harshly. But the main key to 7 is to get a good TA.
Good teacher and explainer. He shows lots of examples and makes sure all understand everything! Quizzes are fair, although for summer session some questions asked weren't talked about in class in depth yet so it was almost like a blind question. Final was a little difficult. I recommend as a physics teacher! my 7a teacher was horrid! This guy=good!
Compared to my 7A teacher, this guy was a lot more clear, consise, and understandable. He makes sure the class understands everything by reiterating it like you are kids, but the repetition helps. Quizzes were ok some questions were unfair. His use of demos in class is helpful. Clicker questions Help a lot to understand the material!
He's a really nice guy who truly wants you to learn the material. His clicker questions were helpful and worth extra credit. The quizzes and final were a bit tough, but I think it was due to the difficulty of the material, not his teaching style. Not a bad physics 7b teacher
If you are going to take thermo. with Webb, I recommend buying "Introductory Statistical Mechanics by Roger Bowley, Mariana Sanchez". The required text book is HIS book, which isnt that helpful. Although, he does make the class VERY easy... you would have to try to fail. I recommend doing hw's because he likes to put hw probs on exams.
took PHY7B summer session 1 and thought he did a good job of cramming all the info into 5 weeks of lectures. enthusiastic, approachable. if you go to lecture, you should recognize most of his quiz questions. the rest are from DL. same with final. questions on final are the main questions gone over in class. good teacher for physics- recommended
Lectures mainly consist of clicker questions (for a grade) and then discussing the answer. He's enthusiastic, shows demonstrations, and gives conceptual quizzes. Make sure you understand concepts, do FNTs and show up to lecture. I noticed no one really fails his class, so I would recommend him.
lectures were basically mini-quizzes; consisted of clicker qs on NEW material NOT YET COVERED in D/L that were scored by right/wrong. unclear as well; wasted 10 minutes in lecture arguing with student about newton's 3rd law pairs. nice guy and willing to help on individual basis, but... overall, wouldn't rec (or rec with a REALLY GOOD TA).
He's pretty hard...the guy gave me a C+ in physics, when I clearly deserved a better grade...I got an A in all my other classes, so it just shows how hard he is...
Not an excellent lecturer--a bit monotonic (especially terrible for students with 7:30AM class), and sometimes couldn't explain questions clearly, but gives good final curve.
really bad instructor. he doesn't really teach, but rather spends 75% of the lecture period giving quiz questions and not explaining the answers. only worth showing up to class for extracredit pts.tests are a wild card and he can have some ridiculous stuff on them.
honestly didn't learn one thing from this guy! if it weren't for my amazing TA I would've failed!
The class differs from most classes b/c most of the class is taught through a TA. So passing this class depends on having a competent TA. As an instructor he fell behind constantly, strayed and spent too much time answering EVERYONE's questions. Attend class to get clicker points, and utilize the blue folds in the book which are very helpful!
didn't learn one thing from his class. waste of time. learn as much as you can from the TAs in your lab. study and do all the fnts (hw), it will help you for the midterm and final.
He speaks very clearly. That is about as good as it gets. His lectures were OK but most of the useful information is through TA's. I strongly recommend going to discussion. Do the FNT's and review quizzes and you should be fine. I took on Fall Quarter 2011.
Absolutely terrible. I loved physics until taking his class. His lectures are unhelpful, the homework doesn't follow the class, he doesn't even tell you what you should be learning. Disorganized, vague, comments only on specific problems instead of the topic as a whole. Don't take his class.
Lecture composed of clicker questions with him explaining the answers throughout. While this is effective in getting students to study, it isn't helpful if you want to understand the more complicated problems. Avoid, but consider him when all the better options are gone. Not a bad professor, he just isn't good.
Not helpful at all. Disorganized lectures, not good at clearly communicating the topics being studied. Doesn't cover concepts, only specific problems.
REALLY REALLY nice guy. Lecture composed of clicker questions which was annoying. Midterms were alright, but the way his grading worked made it so that even if you got the problem wrong, you still get a lot of points for your steps! So people who got the answer completely wrong got a decent score. Therefore no curve. Overall not too bad.
Excellent professor. If you are a freshman, or otherwise accustomed to being spoon fed material, you should probably look elsewhere. Of course, you could realize you are in college, and you have to put a lot of work in in order to learn.
His new teaching style is AWFUL, and the school has yet to listen to this. If he is still teaching this way AVOID AT ALL COSTS. IT'S AWFUL.
Not the best, but also not terrible. Wordy quizzes so I had to decipher language first before I even did physics. Pretty helpful during OH, but explanations can confuse because he's detailed. Like other prof, he hints to how how he tests at OH, so go! Clicker q's are easy 10% of the grade. My group got A's bc we didn't rely on lecture to teach us.
This class is incomprehensibly bad. His lectures, homework, discussion, and labs don't match up whatsoever. He assigns homework twice a week with concepts he hasn't even gone over. Just explain the "ideas" in class then expects us to know the math behind it. For your own sake, please don't take him. It will be the worst quarter of your life.
The worst professor & teaching experience I have ever had at UC Davis. No continuity between homework, lecture, discussion, and lab, and the system of doing the concepts first, math later makes it so you never learn anything the whole quarter. Truly the worst professor I have ever had.
All the 7 series take the same way, it really depend on your TA. so if you want a good grade, choose a good TA and you will be fine.
If you want to get a good grade, it is important that you get a good TA in your DL. There is no curve in PHY 7A.DL are useless for your grade, you can not improve class grade by DL since it is hard to get a high pass in DL. This professor is irresponsible. If you want good grade, you have work really hard
Terrible, learn nothing! Bad teaching skill!
Webb is a chill guy. Important to get a good TA because that is where you will do most of your learning. Go to office hours and have an open mind for physics. Make sure you understand concepts so you can use them to apply answers to answer the quiz questions. really not a hard class at all. got an A
Try to get a really good TA. Webb's lectures didn't really help much with the quizzes and the quizzes were sometimes confusing. Go to OH if you can and go to different TAs' OH and review sessions as well.
Horrible teaching style . Goes way too fast and expects us to understand everything without going in depth. I have never seen an example given to us in lecture. The only guide we have is the text book and homework problems. If you want to learn don't take him.
David Webb is a very nice guy, but his teaching style is absolutely horrible. He only goes over concepts in class, but quizzes are all based on the math behind his concepts, that he doesn't teach you. First midterm was 3 essay questions and a drawing... FOR A PHYSICS CLASS!!! Do not take this guy if you are an engineer, you will have a bad time!
So 10% of points in the class are based on clicker questions. So show up to every lecture. Midterms and final are easy if you know the concepts well. Quizzes based on homework and sometimes he throws one/two on to the final/midterms. (final is also slightly conceptual)
There is only so much lecture time for 9B and I think using it to go over concepts and using YOUR OWN TIME to do hw problems (plus OHs) will help you with weekly quizzes and gain a full understanding of physics, which is the point. Midterms/final combined conceptual with hw problems. Not a terrible teacher if you put the effort in.
Webb was a nice guy. In class he only discussed concepts, no math. Midterms were only concepts. Final was all calculations and was extremely difficult. If you are a physics major take him. If you are an engineer you will not like Webb at all. LOTS of partial credit so no curve. Very helpful in person/office hours, but not very good in lecture.
Very by the book. Know how to do the questions in the book and you will do well in his class.
Worst professor in NA ( North America). Avoid!!!
Take 9 series because the 7 is completely useless. Quizzes are written to make you think you're learning but if you took a real physics exam, you'd fail. He's an ok guy but I hate how he created 7 series and we're all test subjects for an experiment. Do the world a favor: protest 7 series, and protest experimentation on students' futures.
Did not return our quizzes for the longest time, so it was difficult to know how well you're doing in the class. Not helpful during lecture of office hours. Usually answers questions with another question. His lectures consist of 15 minutes of lecturing and the rest of the time is spent on clicker questions.
In general, the physics 7 series can be tough. Luckily, Webb was clear in his lectures and he's pretty enthusiastic so you're not falling asleep in lecture. I went from hating physics 7a to finding 7b really interesting and it had a lot to do with the professor and his style of teaching!
He was probably the worst professor I have ever had at Davis. He basically expected everyone to have a strong background in physics, and relied on clicker questions (which were graded btw) to teach the class. Furthermore, he never returned quizzes so you really had no idea how you were doing in the class. Final was the most ridiculous thing ever.
Decent lecturer. He did some demonstrations in class that were pretty entertaining and helpful in getting the point across. Clicker questions every lecture, some were easy, but some were tricky. One quiz a week in lecture. Quizzes were slightly difficult, but grading is fairly lenient. Final was not bad at all, very similar to DLquiz material.
I had Webb for Physics 9A and I thought he was awesome. Clicker questions every class, so attendance was basically mandatory. He did a good job of explaining concepts. The best part about his midterms and final was that he curves individual questions (lots of partial credit.) Homework (Mastering Physics) was annoying, though.
If you can learn the material on your own and come to lectures for clarifications you are most likely going to get an A. Webb is very conceptual, make sure you know the concepts. In my opinion this is a good way to teach physics.
dude his tests are very easy, as long as one articulates somewhat on the problem your guaranteed a passing grade.
Incredibly smart lecturer. If you love Physics this is the guy to take. You will learn a lot in his class. If you want an easy A and want to BS your way through college I recommend a different lecturer as Webb's lecture style is meant for people who care about the material.
He doesn't really teach in lectures. He helps us do practice quiz problems, which was fine. The class is very DL-dependent. But if you really study hard for the quizzes, you will do fine. He is also a generous grader: if you get 70% or above, you'll have an A-. Final was a bit tougher, but it was very similar to the quizzes. Highly recommended!
Webb sums up everything that is wrong with bad teachers. This class was so misshandled he should send out appology letters to all the students who showed up wanting to learn. His mentality is game-like and actually said "this is the game we're playing now" in lecture. His quizes and exams were a joke, they did nothing to test understanding. Failure
I liked him a lot. Very fair grader and even let you retake a quiz if you did horribly in order to replace the score. His curve was amazing and the only reason I got an A in the class and I came in not knowing any physics. However, I worked really hard for the A and went to office hours and workshop. Would recommend.
This man is incredible at teaching physics. He takes a different approach and doesn't introduce calculations until the 6th week of the quarter. He makes sure concepts and intuition are perfect beforehand which makes physics make sense and easy. I want more than anything to have him for every physics class I take at UC Davis. 150e1675 stars
I recommend this man! He doesn't has any final and he gives us change to retake our quiz every time which is 50% of our grade
Friendly in office hours. The way the class was taught wasn't personally for me (all concepts first, then all calculations) but could work well for others. Class is essentially graded on four quizzes and a final, weighted in one of two different ways (whichever helps you more). Nice professor!
