He is an Okay teacher but has a quiz almost every time we meet and test come quick . Very speedy I know its a hard class but how is this suppose to stick for the final I dont know . Read about 2 chapter ahead before the semester start because the fist exam is on chapter 1 & 2 second exam is on chapter 3,4,& 5 . quizzes & exam tricky
Dave is a great instructor. This was my 2nd time taking this class.I wish I would have had him the 1st time around. If you study the handouts he gives out,you will be fine on his quizzes and exams. He gives quizzes just about every class, but it helps you out when it comes to exams.Heonly covers material that is on the exams.Study&go to class.Take him
Dave is a great teacher. He explains things very well. He is very organized. He follows class schedules. There is never any surprise. His quizes and test are spread out just right(with enough time for preparation. He is very helpful. As long as you study well and keep up with the material you will do well in his class.
excellent teacher. Took the class and got an a. He prepares you for the final. He will help you any time you need it.
I had Professor Whalen for BIO121 and BIO131. If he taught BIO132 I would take his class again. In both classes I earned an A, and the key phrase is "earned an A". His class is not easy but fair. He runs a tight ship and gives you every chance to succeed if you apply yourself. I highly recommend Professor Dave Whalen. popliteal
He's willing to give you help after class and will clarify anything you need. Makes use of the workbook which helped a lot. The only thing is his personality is NOT very animated and somewhat awkward, so make sure you bring your coffee to class.
I did not like his teaching style and the fact that talking to him was awkard didn't help. I need a prefessor that helps me a long the way and that wants me to succeed!
Dave was one of the worst professors I have ever had. He was no help, and professor should give you help if you need it. I suggest that you stay as far away from this professor as possible.
He is a great teacher. He covers all the needed material clear and perfect. He is very black and white thought, meaning no extra credit or curves which is good for you in the end becuase you will need a good grade on your final. I would send all pre nursing students his way.
This man is the worst teacher I have ever had. I cannot stand his class or his teaching. His quizzes are impossible and he is absolutely not helpful at all. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
I really like this class...Expect a quiz every class but that keeps u on top of things..He gives a review before ever exam and lectures are very comprehensive. I haven't read the textbook since the 1st chapter and I have a A ave in the class
Anyone who gives this guy a bad rateing is a fool. Yea, A&P is hard as crap-not his fault. He gives you full access to power points he makes for you. Study them=A. ANY A&P class requires 2 hours of studying for each our spent in class. Dave is a real cool guy- I believe his students who pull through are overall the most successful.
Take him! He is very black and white, easy to understand and does explain everything in simple terms. Has lots of quizes but well worth it-tests are hard. Gives plenty of time for lab review. It is a tough class that does require a lot of out of class study time. Manage your time, ask questions, do well on quizes and you'll be fine.
I have mixed feelings about Dave. I really hated his teaching style the entire class. His tests are next to impossible to pass. I would study for hours and thought I knew the info inside and out, and I would barely pass. All of his tests are extemely tricky. I would not take him again. He is weird, uncomfortable, and does not understand people.
He's the worst teacher I've ever had at Montco, Ive never studied so hard in a class just to get my tests back barley passing. He is ununderstanding and doesn't even teach. All he does is read off of the 40 powerpoint "notes" he gives you. And I never had to withdrawl from a class until I had him. He's boring and his class is impossible to pass.
I have taken This teacher for 3 classes and i would have him teach my emglish and math classes too if he could. Very easy going, super understanding and a fun guy!
Great instructor. He was clear and helpful. The tests and quizzes require analytical thinking and will help you learn this important skill. He has a review before each test that helps you learn how to approach these types of questions. A&P does require memorization and work, but that's to be expected. great class!
Dave is a good instructor. Read his power-point lectures BEFORE you come to class, and review them a lot after his lessons. He teaches mainly off his powerpoints! He's easy to understand, but anatomy involves constant reviewing. Good luck!
I've never studied so much for a class in my life.. even at a university level. I walk away with barely passing grades and I work hard. Test questions are tricky and very hard to understand. You can't just memorize the material and get by. I feel as though I have to analyze every question. I wouldn't recommend this class if you struggle w/ science.
I read alot of his past reviews, the people who found him hard dont appriciate that BIO for a new student IS harder than HS. He IS a clear, to the point teacher. Dry, but will entertain questions outside the scope of the class. Don't expect hand-holding, but if you want to LEARN, he is great. His PPT lectures are BETTER organized than the book.
david's teaching style is very robotic and scheduled. david basically gives a synopsis of the chapter as quickly as possible as if he is trying to beat his own previous time for the lecture. the lectures dont cover anything not found in the book and he has daily quizzes which are so easy that they are pointless. david doesnt entertain questions.
Dr. Whalen knows his stuff. There are some complicated concepts in Biology. If you study his Blackboard slides, you will do well. He will answer questions, if you ask. I would rather have a quiz at the end of each chapter, which helps bring up your grade, then just having a large test. The quizzes let you see the style of his questionts.
Presents material clearly and covers a lot in a short time. Reading the text and powerpoints BEFORE class is a must (lecture should be a review). Having office hours right after class is helpful, and labs let out early which gives an opportunity to ask questions. Good overall professor although not very personable.
Good teacher, he answers any question you can come up with. His tests require you to apply the knowledge you have gained, some students consider this tricky but what else are we here for? Would recommend him to anyone.
Prof. Whalen is great. He covers material quickly and clearly and answers all questions thoroughly. He is very nice and, I thought, very approachable. He tests only on the material on his slides...which he gives out. I would definitely recommend him!
He explains things kinda off sometimes. But, he is ok as a teacher. Be sure to ask questions if stuck during class. Study key points from powerpoint and look at labs. I did not use the book during the class.
He is fabulous, I definitely recommend. What he taught me in Bio I've used repeatedly in my upper lever science courses. His quizzes help you form good study habits. I am extremely lucky to have had him.
Dr.Whalen is a great teacher. He explains everything clearly and knows what he is talking about. He provides you with all the information you need for the tests and quizzes you on every chapter which really did help for the test. The class is not easy but if you put the time in, you can get a good grade. I would recommend him 100%
David is knowledgeable and willing to stop and explain a hard concept. He also shows videos and repeats slides to reinforce a topic. The only problem is that, while his quiz's are clear and straightforward, his tests are not. He asks roundabout questions that give to multiple answers. Find the one he wants, not always the correct one
For people who are either Bio majors or interested in Bio, he is as good as McCarthy in both lecture and method of testing. He also shows alot of videos that explain the concepts well.
One of the best teachers at Montco. He covers the material that you need for tests, quizzes every day, and difficult tests that prepare you for future courses. No surprises. Difficult, but he reviews every test before and after. I would definitely take him again!! Learned alot in fast paced summer 1 course!
Dr. Whalen's class is easy because he makes it so. He allows you to think out the problems while he kindly explains the difficult topics. Be sure to read the questions on the tests carefully and remember on his powerpoints to read and know the little yellow boxes. That information comes up again in tests and quizzes.
Great teacher!! He made a lot of complicated material very comprehensible through drawings, videos, analogies, you name it. Well spoken, very knowledgeable, very calm and easy going. The class is challenging, but that is because of the subject matter. He keeps you on your toes with chapter quizzes and does a full day of review before exams.
Way too uptight about stuff. Never fully went into explaining much just lectured on it and expected you to get it. Nice guy BUT I personally didn't like his teaching style. I will say he's sweet. Gives quizzes every other lecture and has reviews for exams during the last class before the exam. I got a D. Retaking class.
AMAZING TEACHER...listen up people I never review my teachers but now ONE YEAR later I'm finding what he taught me stuck. So I think he deserves a good review. I'm taking a micro class currently and what he taught me in basic bio has very very helpful. He's very clear and repeats the information over so EVERYONE in the class understands. Take him!
Best prof. at MCCC. If you're a nursing student take him bc he will teach everything in a way to learn and store long-term! He loves his job and subject. Study PowerPoints, show up and prepare for quizzes. Easiest science classes ever.. A in both. To be frank, if your lazy or want an A handed to you it won't happen but that's real college not HS.
Excellent Professor! Makes difficult material relatively easy to learn. Only tests on material found on power point lectures and gets grades up quickly! My favorite professor by far! Endures grueling amounts of questions with compassion and understanding. Gives great metaphors and mnemonics to help in memorization. Highly recommend!
Whalen is very helpful. His powerpoints and notes are much more helpful than the book. I barely used the text books for any of his 3 classes I took.
I had him for A/P 1 in the summer. I did well in the class, but A/P in 6 weeks was hell. It is a very hard class. However, he is an amazing teacher!
I was nervous taken AP 1 in the summer because the people I spoke to almost guaranteed me that I was going to fail because of how accelerated it was. I had professor Whalen and what my peers said couldn''t have been further from the truth Good professor he lectured in just enough time to keep my attention which can be challenging.
Took A&P1 over 15 weeks. Quiz or test almost every class. Tests were mostly mc some fill in. Use your lab time wisely. Lets you record lecture. 3 dissections. Prof Whalen is very clear and a great teacher! Lab book is critical, text book not so much. Study his pp's and go to class, but don't be late! I finished with a 98. Wish he was teaching A&P2.
Professor Whalen was a great A & P 1 professor. i wish he was teaching A & P 2. he is very good at explaining his power points and explains things multiple times so everyone is able to understand and uses pictures. His lectures keep you interested and he is very willing to help students. Easily one of the best professors i have ever had.
A & P one, summer condensed term. Great lecturer, and very thorough PowerPoints for lectures are provided. He is very helpful. Get to class early & be ready to processabsorb the material as he lectures. Don't scribble notes and try to learn it later. A & P has tons of material to memorize, so you need to put in time everyday outside of class.
Professor Whalen is a great teacher. Bio 151 is a tough course, but having a great professor who can explain biology in terms that make sense, makes the course worth it! There are A LOT of quizzes. One every class. There is a lot of work and effort that needs to be put into this class, but Professor Whalen really lectures and teaches well. SHOW UP!
Very organized and manages the pace to cover the many topics in the A & P syllabus. His quizzes and tests are not easy, but will prepare you well for the department final. Labs are for extended learning/hands on exposure to the content, not tedious report writing. He is an engaging lecturer which matters when you are listening to this much content.
He is very good at explaining things. Test and quizzes are extremely hard and often worded very tricky. He likes to ask questions that you might not think are important. I feel like we weren't prepared for the dept final exam. The final was 100 questions. There was 10 easy ones and the other 90 were extremely difficult.
Great teacher: clear expectations. He provides powerpoint lectures (READ THEM before class!) well in advance. The lectures have a perfectly logical flow, which makes it easy to learn an entire chapter in an hour and a half. Great anecdotes and examples in every lecture. Anything he talks about a lot is on the test. Have a question - just ask!
Took this as a 7 week summer class. 20 hours a week in class and another 20 hours of studying outside of class every week for my A. If you take this in the summer make sure you have the time for it. Very well prepared for departmental final, got a 94% on it. I would take Whalen again for anything! Best teacher I have had at Montco!
I took Bio 132 (A&PII) in the spring 2016. Professor Whalen provides very clear and valuable power points. For his exams, you can do very well by relying on studying the PP's. It was his first time teaching 132 in some years so, I felt somewhat unprepared for the departmental final. Quick grader!! Same day. Good class.
Whalen was one of the best choices i could have made at MCCC. He is a great professor who deff is able to translate the material and make it more understandable and relatable. His tests/quizzes are not the easiest, but hey its anatomy. He does it to help you prepare for the REAL world/scenarios. So glad i got him again for A&P 2. HIGHLY recommend!
He is awesome!
Must be on time every day, never miss class. All material for exams and quizzes is presented in the excellent lectures (and PowerPoint posted). Print in advance, pay attention and take notes during lecture. Review the slides with your notes within 24 hours of the lecture and again the next day to lock down the new terms and concepts. Great prof!!
Really good lecturer, but BIO 152 is tough. There is a lot to memorize (terminology and hierarchies) and also a lot to learn (processes and relationships). Quizzes all the time force you to review regularly not wait until exams. Much harder than BIO 151, so plan on a lot more time outside of class. Prof. Whalen is available and helpful.
Real swell guy. You can tell he absolutely loves the subject matter. His lectures are very clear and understandable, and quite fact-saturated. He's got a good sense of humor too, doesn't come out a lot but he can make the class laugh. The subject comes naturally to me, but if that's not the case for you try to review it a lot. Lots of quizzes too.
Best professor I've had at Montco (had him for A&P too), wish he could teach my other science classes. His grading is fair and everything expected of you is clear in the syllabus. He gives quizzes almost every class which helps you stay on top of things. He's always open to questions and seems like he really cares about you.
Really great professor. His quips and dry humor were appreciated and his grading fair. You can see his passion for his career.
The best professor I had so far. He is well organized and has a passion for his work. Hes always available for questions. He gives quizzes on every chapter so you know what to work on for the exams. I was going through a very hard time in my personal life during the semester I had him, but he was very understanding and made it easy to focus.
Professor Whalen is one of the most organized professors Ive encountered. He follows a very predictable pattern with many quizzes, a group practice test, and unit exam. His lectures were interesting and he spoke eloquently. He seems like a really cool person. Would definitely recommend him. You have to work hard but he is reasonable.
Prof Whalen is the best anatomy teacher at montco! There is a quiz or test every class but his power points prepare you. just read through the powerpoints to study and actually put time in and you can get a good grade. Anatomy is hard no matter who you take but he is a great teacher.
Professor Whalen is a fair and very helpful teacher. The course has a lot of material, but the way is it broken up in his courses is reasonable. You have to stay on top of the material to be successful. He prepares you well for the final. His quizzes and tests are based on his powerpoints. Take Whalen and study hard for this class!
He puts his powerpoints online so you can print them before class and take notes. He is enthusiastic. He is laid back and it makes the class more laid back. You still have to work for your grade but it's a great learning environment. DIdn't use the book at all but you do need the lab manual.
Great professor. He is very knowledgeable and relates the material to everyday experiences. He has power points for all lectures and the exams are based off them. Didnt use our book but you need the lab manual.
I took this class in the summer 6-week session, so It was quit difficult to keep up , but Professor Whalen is a great teacher for Anatomy and Physiology. I learned so much and he was always helpful. I had a quiz everyday but that may just be because its summer, and lab practicals were kinda hard, But I totally recommend taking this Professor.
Whalen was awesome for A&P. The way he describes things in lecture is very clear. You don't need to read the book, you can get everything from his power point slides. If you study what he gives you and pay attention in class, as long as you have a generally good understanding of biology getting an A shouldn't be too difficult.
I wanted to like him, but unfortunately did not find him to be as great as everyone says. He moves very fast and always just reads directly from the power point. I often had to go home and teach myself all of the material. Will not give credit on quizzes if you slightly misspelling bones and muscles. Also loves giving two quizzes in one day.
I wanted to like him, but I didnt. He reads directly from the Power Points, which completely different from the book and his tests are unreasonably hard. He gives quizzes at every class which are designed specifically to trip you up. He did not answer questions clearly and did not hear any viewpoints that werent his own.
This class was difficult enough on its own. However, his tests and quizzes are intentionally confusing. Simply put, they were unreasonable. You almost need a separate class on his testing style. He doesnt curve anything and is dismissive when presented with questions about tested materials. Would NOT take again.
I was hoping for so much more. His personality is dull. If you get a question wrong and ask why, its because its wrong and thats it; no helpful explanation. He gives a quiz every class and they are designed for failure. He makes it impossible to do well. Ive always been a great student, but his class makes me second guess myself.
He explains things very well! His teaching style is very difficult though .His test are extremely difficult. Im reasonably good student, this class has me struggling though. If youre gonna take him you have to live eat breath his class He is super fast pace. If you were late he would mark you as absent. I sped to his class like zoom. I never speed
I took him based on the great reviews on here. Let me just say it was not a good experience. He is very robotic and has no personality. I am an excellent student and study very hard, but you would think you are taking the MCAT with how difficult his tests are. It is unfortunate, but you feel like you are being set up for failure most of the time.
Awesome professor who explains and teaches the material. He will answer student questions and draw visuals on the board to help. He gives lectures from his PowerPoints. Learned so much and he really prepares you for the final! Study, pay attention, do the work and youll be fine. Best A&P teacher at Montco!
Professor Whalen means well but,his lack of personality/dialogue w/students makes you think otherwise. His quizzes/tests are beyond difficult. His teaching style is for someone fresh out of High School, unemployed,or the Next Bill Gates!!! If you have a full-time job, family,or any obligations other than HIS class-choose another professor!
Difficult Prof. Must read his exams carefully because he try to trip you up with his questions. When you ask why his questions are so difficult he'll tell you that in nursing you sometime have to decide between two meds so he wants to make sure you can read and process information. I'm not a nursing major, so his answer didn't make sense.
Professor Whalen is not here to be your friend; he is here to teach a weed-out course. His expectations are high, yes, but they are not impossible. For those of us going on to health-related fields, we need professors who are sticklers for the details. After taking both his A& P classes, I feel totally prepared for the Nursing curriculum.
Class is well organized and Quizzes you on every chapter to keep you on your feet. But he is Not friendly at all; lack of communication; doesn't consider or care about students' concern. Exams and quizzes are really hard. Expectation is to know EVERY single word from the ppt. No review or extra resources for exams. NO EC or curving. GOOD LUCK !
Dr. Whalen was okay, he definitely could have better teaching ways especially with difficult topics. 14 quizzes total which he only drops one and he does NOT drop the lowest test unlike others. Too much material to know for the quizzes and he includes little details that we need to know on the quiz but won't ever help us in life. READ LECTURES!!!
Prof Whalen is great. He is organized, very knowledgeable and his explanations are very good. His class is very demanding and you have to WORK. He has quizzes almost every lecture. Other ratings say he is non-interactive but that is not true. When approached he is friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
I took Prof. Whalen because I got a lot of positive feedback about him, but my experience has not been positive. Anatomy is a hard subject but his tests and quizzes are unreasonably hard. I feel as though he has 0 personality and is not good at communicating with students when needed. I have worked so hard in this class and still might not pass.
I had Whalen for BIO 151 and BIO 152. Overall he's a great professor if you actually want to learn since he focuses on details. He explains things really well, very organized, follows the syllabus, is friendly, and answers questions well. You HAVE to study regularly to pass, there's five unit exams plus the final exam along with MANY quizzes.
Professor Whalen shouldn't be teaching. He proved he didn't care about his students success when he stopped lecturing halfway through the semester due to the covid pandemic. He could've posted lectures online or videos and opted not to and let us learn on our own while giving difficult test/ quizzes. Don't take A&P with him
I took this professor based off positive reviews here. I regret it. I just don't see the big deal for this professor. His tests are made for you to fail, he words questions for you to purposely get confused and pick the wrong answer. On top of this course being very difficult, you have to deal with trying to decipher his questions. Happy I passed.
I took this professor as a recommendation and I'm sorry I did. He didn't post things on time at all. I took it as an online class and he would only give you a one day window to take the tests/quizzes. He brushed off my questions, and made this way more difficult than is necessary. I dropped the class because my GPA was going to plummet. Never again
If you have a job or children, do not take a class with this professor. He is incredibly knowledgeable but the work load is outrageous. The tests are impossible. I have a master's degree and have never struggled academically until this class.
I did a completely online class with recorded lectures. Lectures had all the info needed to pass class. Everything's pretty much straight forward and as stated in the syllabus. He's not great at answering emails though. He seems like he would have been fun if it was an in-person class.
I did take this class twice when covid hit everything was out of whack. I could have gotten out the first time with a B but was distracted and ended up with a D. However the second time around I took it alone and did it online and between listening to lectures over and over and slowly reading test questions I seemed to have done better.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. Every day we have class there is a quiz or exam. His lecture includes reading off a power point that is already posted online. Might as week be teaching yourself. Never does any review for any quizzes or tests, and he makes no effort to make class interesting in any way. Horrible class, bad professor.
he has recordings for everything in his class. you need to do is follow the schedule, and just watch those videos or attend lectures. take quizzes seriously because they are a way to prepare for exams. his exams are hard but they are only hard because they make you think, and (read the questions). he will repeat hard subjects which is really good.
He never encouraged to do from textbook, i was doing fine until final.. omg it was all mostly from book!!!! i feel like he woulve encouraged us to do book aswell.
If you have test/quiz anxiety, DO NOT take this class. There is a quiz every week. It's not the traditional question answers like A-D, it's usually A-F with some trick answers. The professor does nothing interesting to make the class engaging nor do anything to make the class understandable for students who haven't been teaching the class 20+ years
There were multiple quizzes a week based on lectures we had, but the quizzes were fair as long as you reviewed the material in his slides. Very little homework, but a lot of studying outside of class. No makeup quizzes or tests, so attendance and keeping up with the syllabus are critical. Exams were similar to quizzes. Lectures were easy to follow.
Labs you always got 100% for but were never graded or provided w/ correct answers so it didn't help me learn the material; it was just "busy work." He said to study concepts highlighted in yellow but then there wouldn't really be questions on that information on tests. Hard to follow - a lot of homework that didn't seem to correlate with test ?s
Hard class
Professor is nice but expects WAY TOO much for a freshmen/sophomore level class. Montco science department is hard. This guy makes his exams so difficult. I took this class at psu and did amazing. I needed lab so i took this, it was one of the hardest college classes I've taken. (I graduated college too. this is for grad school) loves to trick you
It doesn't matter who you take for AP1 at MCCC. The dept has made it their mission to make this class absolutely impossible. You have to know EVERYTHING and then some. Every exam looks like the NCLEX. The final is departmental and absolutely impossible. I don't blame the professor. The school has unrealistic expectations. Take AP anywhere else.
Didn't love or hate him. He is very clear on the quizzes and exams being based off of his PowerPoints, though, so make sure to study those WELL. Was a co-taught class with Moore and the grading wasn't very clear when the switch was made and I had a hard time transitioning from the two teachers. Would've liked to be taught from Whalen for longer tho
Prof. Whalen is a good teacher. The material for anatomy is a lot to take in, but I feel like he makes it digestable. Relies heavily on his PowerPoints so the textbook was basically useless. Syllabus was very clear so I suggest you read ahead so you can have an idea of the material. He's very down to earth and respond to emails quickly.
He gives you a clear idea on what he wants you to know for the exams and quizzes - if you study his power points you will be absolutely golden for the exams/quizzes, He is flexible and understands if you aren't getting something and makes difficult material much easier to digest. Attendance is not mandatory but very helpful. Great teacher!
Solid professor. Quiz for every chapter. 6 total exams (5 unit, 1 final). Most of the class is lecture with either a small lab for each chapter and a larger lab each unit. Good at explaining concepts, but he seemed like he didnt want to be in class (to be fair it was a night class but still).
