wow he's a really hard teacher but interesting and knows what he's talking about. great way to get to know the book of mormon.
I took him for 2 semesters I liked him so much. Amazing teacher who really knows his stuff. He really cares about each student, wants to get to know them and help them in any way possible. His tests are hard but you learn SO much that it is worth it.
This has been my favorite religion class here. Brother whitchurch is so informative, and i felt much closer to the scriptures at the end of the semester. the class was challenging, but more than worth it
Brother Whitchurch is awesome! I love his class. He really knows what he's talking about and really cares about his students. He inspires me to become better acquainted with the words of the prophets.
not an easy class, but a very nice guy. He knows what he's talking about and puts alot of time into preparing his power point class presentations. tests are hard, read VERY carefully. keep up on scripture journals, making them up is very hard. ;-)
this was my first religion class at byu and i hated it. he was so nit picky about every detail. "oh my bad, brother whitchurch... cuz i forgot to memorize the book of mormon." spends too much time off the subject.
Whitchurch is a good man with a good heart. However, his tests are really difficult. Pay attention to lecture, not powerpoints. The PP are useless. Keep up on reading (almost take notes). Basically, it's seminary with a grade that can kill your GPA.
Don't take this class unless you want to try and memorize the Book of Mormon....

a very nice man, works hard to prepare PP slides, but tests are very difficult, must know lecture notes very well and read the BOM very carefully. sometimes is kind of funny, try and find someone that is less nitpicky on his hard tests, journal assignments are a little bit frustrating
I LOVE Brother Whitchurch! It seems a lot of people don't because they think he's hard but I think he's easy. I look forward to his class every week. It's my favorite. He REALLY knows his stuff. He's spent a lot of time in the Holy Land so he brings in lots of interesting insights, and objects!
Your experience in this class depends on your dedication to learning and studying the scriptures. Pro. Whitchurch expects effort, but if you pay attention and study, you will have a greater understanding of the scriptures and you will grow. Short, reflective journal assignments for each class.
Although he is an expert on the Holy Land and in his area, he was the most ridiculously hard teacher I have ever had. He expects the class to know everything he does and doesn't cover most of what he tests on. This class was harder than any of my pre-med classes. Made my GPA drop...frustrating!
He is an amazing man who cares about his students. My roommate was sick one day, and he personally called and asked if there was anything he could do to help. His tests are pretty detailed, and require a good amount of study, but are doable. Make use of his website and questions on it!
He's really difficult and while he does care about his students and is willing to help out when needed, his tests are a killer and as others have said expect to memorize the Book of Mormon. on the positive side I really enjoyed the journals and it gave me a great insight to what I was learning
I took Book of Mormon and New Testament both from Brother Whitchurch. He's an amazing man and his lectures are great. Pay special attention to yellow writing on the slides- those are really all that matter for the tests. His tests are extremely difficult- New Testament is much harder than BoM, maybe
Nice man, but class is all poowrpts with hardly any information. Tests: extremely tricky- even if you know the answer you can't figure out which choice is that answer. I think the subjects he covers in class and tests you on aren't meaningful so the Spirit isn't there often.
He is a very nice person and is willing to talk to students about problems and difficulties within the class, but his tests are very hard. Even after studying for hours you can do poorly. It isn't that you don't know the information, the questions are really just trick questions.
his test are so hard! the only way to get an a is to study for hours adn hours or just be a really good guesser.. his class is ok.. but i bet you can find better. but he is a very nice adn helpful guy
Very nice teacher. The tests were insane. i studied for days before the final and still got a low grade. Good class, but hard to get a good grade without devoting your life to it.
yeah, he's really cool, and his test are nuts...but i got a 51 on the final and still pulled off a B+ (in other words, HE CURVES)
awsome guy
He's very good man, but not too interesting. His tests are dang hard, but he grades fairly. Not much outside work besides reading and journals, no papers or projects
One of the best professors I've ever had. I learned a ton. And come on, we're not in high school anymore. This is college now, kiddos, expect to study to get a good grade.
He is a really nice guy but can not teach very well. His lectures are very different from the tests and the tests are hard. He tries to trick you and for the most part he always succeeds. Lecture was also really boring.
Bro Whitchurch was a great teacher...after the first test I figured out how to take notes and study. It does require studying, but it is doable. I learned so much in this class! I recommend him.
I was very excited to take this class, but was VERY disappointed. I learned very little. His lectures were extremely boring! His tests were totally different from the lectures and felt like all he was doing was trying to trick you. I studied like crazy for the final and still got a 58%.
Excellent class overall. His tests were fair and pretty straightforward (if you did the study guides). He stuck to true doctrine unlike some religion teachers. His method for lecturing was effective. I've heard his NT class is really good too.
Good, but his tests are very difficult. He is very interested in his students and knows so much about his subject matter.
Brother Whitchurch is a little tough, but I really enjoyed his classes just the same. He really knows what he's talking about, so if you ever take him, just pay attention in class.
hated the class... it was really sad, because I wanted to increase my testimony of the new testament, and he definatley turned me away from it... it was just too technical, the tests are impossible, and the lectures are boring. DOnt take from Whitchurch if you get a chance.
Because he's been to all the places talked about in the N.T. he has pictures and stories that help bring the scriptures alive. His lectures are great if you like to just listen, see pictures and learn stories. It's hard to take notes though. Tests weren't that difficult, I didn't study a lot and I got a B. Just listen in lectures and do the reading
Bro. Whitchurch is a great teacher and he really knows a lot about history and doctrine. I found most of his lectures interesting, but the tests were really hard. Don't take this class if you don't want to study a lot!
He is an amazing teacher - never a boring lecture. Very knowledgeable. The tests are not easy, but if you study and pay attention in lecture they're not too bad. I learned a lot, more than I ever imagined I would. I highly recommend him to anyone that wants to learn a lot about the Savior and His teachings.
I really loved this class. The lectures were amazing! Tons of cool pictures and stories. Tests were kind of hard, so you do need to study, but I would reccomend this class!
A little more like a history class than religion...
He is a great teacher, but he doesn't want his test questions to be about things his students knew before they took the class. So you are tested more on what he says and especially on his hand outs than on knowledge gained from just reading the scriptures. Some of the questions that he asks are arbitrary facts more than scriptural knowledge.
My friends and I took him together and we all loved him.
Brother Whitchurch has had so much personal experience with the holy land that he was really able to bring the New Testament to life for me. Focus on the yellow writing in the powerpoints, do your reading, and go over all the handouts, and you should do well in the class.
Good teacher
This is the one and only religion class I'll ever take at BYU. He is very knowledgable about the holy land, etc... But I took the class to learn about Christ, not the Dead Sea. The class is too academic and not spiritually enlightening. His tests are implossible to study for. His journals; however, were a positive from this class.
He is the best religion teacher i have had at this school(and i have had a lot). He is the perfect blend. He has good history, but his classes are really spiritual. I learned a ton. And the tests are right from the lectures.
I hated this class. He was rude and very set in his ways. The tests were incredibly hard considering it is a religion class. His lectures were boring and scattered. There was no organization. He was more interested in wowing us on his travels then helping us learn the doctrine. I agree with the comment stating more like a history class.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. He says judgmental, radical things and then always, always, always laughs afterward. It's like he can say whatever if he just laughs after. Tests are SUPER difficult with really ambiguous and vague answers. He's super ridiculously strict and not willing to help. I wish i never took the class.
Brother Whitchurch was such a great teacher. He was able to provide great insight into the culture of the New Testament which made it more applicable to each of us. His tests are difficult and I didn't get an amazing grade, but he was able to introduce me to a new way of applying the scriptures to my experiences.
He is the best religion teacher I had at BYU. He made the Bible come alive like I had never read it before. The class is challegeing for a Religion class, but i studied the notes and the handouts and got an A. I LOVED the class.
Whitchurch runs his class like highschool. He grades on attendance and being on time and completing the reading and journal on time for every class period! No notes are put on blackboard. His grading is subjective and takes points off for texting and not paying attention in class. Tests are multiple choice and are required to read the entire manual
He is the bomb. The best religous professor I have had at BYU. Anyone who says he is hard to just bitter that they took a religious class that took some effort. It is not hard if you study because he tells you everything that will be on the test. And he is such a good teacher.
He's a great teacher! His tests are really hard and require a lot of studying, but I found the material very interesting. I really enjoyed his class. I would recommend it to anyone who would like a challenge.
Witchurch was my favorite Rel teacher at BYU. His class is very academic based, he expects you to learn and not just rely on what you know. Classes are very clear and interesting, tests are challenging. His knowledge of the scriptures is amazing, he is very organized and runs his class well.
I went through and read all the comments from those who had the blue sad face, and they make Brother Whitchurch sound so hard and mean. He isn't. If your willing to take the time to study the student manual and ask questions when you don't understand, you'll do fine. He is very nice and his lectures are always interesting.
Brother Whitchurch's class is so interesting! After the first lecture I felt like I'd never even cracked open the BoM. He knows everything because he's done archaeology over in Jerusalem and stuff. Tests are pretty hard, but he raises everybody's grades if a ton of people don't get 100s. You'll learn a ton!
Brother Whitchurch was a good teacher. He knows the scriptures very well and was good at getting the ideas across to the students. The only assignments are reading and a journal (10 entries). His tests aren't too hard. By doing the reading, journal, and attending class it should not be hard. An easy A or B.
Whitchurch is a good teacher. He teaches from power points and really helps you to understand the scriptures. The tests are not too bad if you pay attention in class and as you read. I learned a lot of things from him and enjoyed going to class.
Good Teacher, but really hard
I was really shocked when I took my first test in this class. The tests are on specific details that are hard to prepare for, and not emphasized. I enjoyed going to class and learning a lot, but I don't know if it was worth always feeling hopeless when it came to exams.
I loved Whitchurch's class. His tests were terribly difficult, but since the subject material was meaningful, I didn't mind. I appreciated his empathy, and he did a great job of paying attention to all his students. He's a good man.
I absolutely loved Brother Whitchurch! He not only cares about his students, but he is an amazing teacher. I think I tripled the amount of knowledge I had on the BoM in his class. Taking his class has also strengthened my testimony of the BoM immensely! His tests aren't that bad as long as you pay attention and study.
Great prof! His lectures were extremely interesting and he holds great conversations. The tests are hard, but manageable. I actually learned a TON about the Book of Mormon, where other Rel 121 classes are like testimony meetings. Great class. Study hard for the final!!! Most people in his class got the grade they wanted. I ended up with an A :)
This is a sweet class. Best rel class ever. I learned so so much. The class is a little more work than most rel classes, but not much. The test are not hard, all you do is memorize your notes and the handouts. Easy A and sweet sweet learning.
Great teacher. Knows A LOT. Study the notes he gives in class and read all material covered in the manual. He gives you study guides for a reason so be sure to use them. Have fun. (I gave him a chili pepper just because he mentioned this a couple times in class)
Brother Whitchurch is one of the best people I know. I do not regret taking the class because I learned a lot BUT I am retaking it from someone else. I put so much into this class and I got a B-. Take it if you want to learn. Don't if you need to raise your GPA.
Ridiculous-- I made straight A's this semester except for 1 B in this class. I studied 12 hours for the final and got a 70. The questions are sooo detailed that no matter how much preparation you put in you'll still miss a bunch. I attended every single class, as attendance is mandatory and being late can count against you.
I took his class in fall, and it was really good. The tests werent difficult as many think. Of course, if you dont read the scriptures is going to be hard. The journal were really fun and his explanation was very clearly. I recommend him.
Brother Whitchurch is awful. AWFUL. You can't ask him questions - well, you can, he just doesn't answer them. He'll say "You guys are asking such great questions!", and move on. If he does answer you, it's more of a rebuttal than an answer. Hate/loathe/despise this class. Which is sad, considering what it's about.
I don't know why these kids are hating on Bro. Whitchurch. He's good, and not too hard. You learn the scriptures academically and spiritually. Those kids probably just failed his tests, which are kind of tough, but I got 100s on them, so they're not impossible like some kids say they are. He's a good guy and really cheerful.
Tough teacher and tests, but I learned a ton. I may not have gotten an A, but it was one of the most rewarding courses. Missing class really hurts.
I don't like this guy at all. I honestly think that he's a professor purely for research purposes. The class comes second to that. His tests all have to do with what he says in class, but he never gets through all of his slides. Doesn't post ppts either, bc "the pictures may be copyrighted." No one cares about a background. Just post the thing.
Bro. Whitchurch is a great professor, you can tell he really loves what he is teaching. I learn so much from the class. The tests are hard if you don't read deeply. He is a great teacher!
Bro. Whitchurch was a great guy and and kept class interesting for the most part. The class was fairly easy, the only assignments other than reading were Journals.
Brother Whitchurch is a great professor and you will learn so much in his class, but the test is no cake walk. You HAVE to go to class to get the notes, and you have to read and study outside of class in order to do well on his tests.
Professor Whitchurch is a great guy, but not a great Book of Mormon Teacher. He goes off on tangents that don't matter, wasting time in class and sometimes skipping over important information for the tests (which are extremely hard). I would never recommend him to anyone ever, nor would i take his class again.
Nice guy but THE MOST RIDICULOUS TESTS!! Impossible to study for. If you don't have the Book of Mormon memorized word for word, you're done for. I am never taking another class from him. Hard to comprehend what he's talking about because he rambles. Not sure if I will pass (taking the final tomorrow!!) because his tests are so HARD!!!
Incredibly difficult. Not my reccomendation.
Bro Whitchurch is a nice guy, but his class is not worth it. The tests are really hard, and even when I studied for hours it did not really help. His tests are difficult and this class will lower your GPA. I am retaking from someone else.
His class is a good overview of the Book of Mormon, largely from a historical backdrop. Tests deal with dates, who said what, and chronology. He is willing to work with students and is a good class. Tests are legitimate, you must study. Good class, I learned a lot.
very good teacher allowed the spirit to teach through the class more than him lecturing the entire time. i would take a class from him again
I wish he wasn't my first religion teacher at BYU. I think it's stupid when a teacher makes learning about the Book of Mormon hard, so I wish I had found a different teacher
If you want to just sleep through your religion classes, then don't take this class. I took it. It wasn't the easiest class, but it was one of the most rewarding and spiritually enriching experiences of my life. I would take it again and again.
I have taken a lot of religion classes at BYU. Professor Whitchurch is by far one of the best and one of the easiest classes. This was a great class and definitely one people should take.
Wonderful teacher. Has personal experiences, photos, and stories about the Holy Land that really allows students to picture the time of our Savior.
When I read these comments when picking professors, i thought he would be ok. He is phenomenal. He is like a kindly, smart, grandpa. He is a bishop, and always has the Spirit. He has a soft voice, and adds a lot to your knowledge of the Book of Mormon. I'm so glad I have him as my teacher. Really nice. Keep up on the reading.
I absolutely loved this class!! Whitchurch really made me appreciate the Book of Mormon.
Professor did not discuss in class what was on the tests because he can't stay on topic. We never got through all the notes and we were always behind. I studied all the notes, the manual, and my BOM, but still had a hard time on the tests. It's like he wants you to fail. He doesn't allow you to use the BOM for tests either.
He was very nice but I actually really struggled in this class. The tests are very difficult. I worked harder in this class than a lot of other classes.
This class was a lot of fun and I learned quite a bit. Bro. Whitchurch is really nice and genuinely interested in each student. He is very intelligent and will teach great insights to the BOM. Tests were quite difficult and required studying but an A is obtainable. Overall an enjoyable and easy class.
Awesome class. He brings a different perspective and teaches it well while still sticking to the doctrine. Really enjoyed the class.
Brother Whitchurch really knows how to make lessons interesting. As long as you study smarter for his tests then they are really quite easy.
I liked Bro. Whitchurch as a person but did not enjoy his class. I must be behind in my knowledge of the Book of Mormon and I come from a weaker early seminary program, so I struggled in his class. However, if you already have a really strong base I would suggest him. The thing I was most disappointed in was how little I felt the spirit, but maybe that's my fault?
GREAT teacher. Not the easiest BoM professor, but not particularly hard either. Tests require you to study and know the Book of Mormon well. Dr. Whitchurch is one of the nicest professors you'll find and is extremely willing to work with and help students. He's also a bishop and that comes through in his teaching a lot of the time.
Brother Whitchurch is a great guy; he's a harder BoM professor, but not terribly hard. You have to actually study for his tests, but they aren't too hard, either. He's extremely smart, and will teach you a lot of new things. There aren't many quizzes, just a journal. Great class and great professor!
I learned a ton in his class. He focuses on the facts more than general concepts which I think is appropriate for a Book of Mormon class. You have to study for the tests, but they aren't really hard. If you have a photographic memory, then this class is a breeze.
His tests are ridiculously hard. His teaching style is super boring and you have no idea what you actually need to know. I don't recommend whitchurch at all
He is a very caring professor but is so boring. His tests were hard for me because his class is too much focused on the little facts and history whereas my other BOM teacher taught the doctrines. I would recommend not taking BOM from him.
Professor Whitchurch is really interesting, but due to his frequent tangents, we never got through all the notes. If you have a photographic memory, you'll do great on tests, but he's nitpicky. I felt like the tests were meant to trick you more than test your understanding. It was very vague what to study. My only "B" class that semester.
He is an AMAZING teacher, one of my favorite! You just have to go to class, take notes and study the study guide he gives you for the test! He cares for his students and wants the best!
Brother Whitchurch is AMAZING! I learned so much in his class! Yes you have to study a lot but if you go to class you just have to study your notes and his study guide then the tests are a breeze. I definitely recommend him to anyone who wants to really learn and feel the spirit every day! He's the best religion teacher I've ever had.
His tests are pretty difficult to take...but somehow the average is usually in the high 80s. He also adjusts the highest grade on tests so your grade will always improve from what you see in the testing center. He's been on a lot of trips to Jerusalem and really knows the culture, so he has great insights.
Love him! Focuses on what is happening during the time of the scriptures, as well as the facts, like geography and buildings. Learning gospel concepts as well as history! Journals aren't terrible, graded on keeping up on reading, etc. Tests are relatively easy if you study. Has great stories from his time in the Holy Land, and love his humor!
Got off topic quite a bit so we were never able to get through all the material. He is a great guy but his tests are extremely detailed so study the hand-outs well and you'll be fine. I got high A's on the midterms but the final was quite difficult and I got a C on it. I'm taking his Religion 212 class if that helps. Good luck!
Easy tests, just make sure you study the handouts & write down what he said was important in class. Final was hard. You must go to class & do the readings because you get counted off if you don't- these points can save your grade! You only have 8 journal entries all semester. I neglected this class until the tests & crammed & I always got high A's.
Friendly, sociable and enthusiastic. It's clear that he has much more to say than time allows. To succeed, you need to do your reading, writing and attend the lectures. The tests require a mastery of the details, so a eidetic memory is definitely an asset. He'll teach you something you don't know, which is as good as it gets.
Great, fun teacher. He really goes in depth into the New Testament, so be reasy to learn. He usually tells us ahead of time what's on the tests and the test questions are almost verbatim from the notes. The assignments aren't difficult. If you pay attention in class, write down notes and study, it's almost impossible not to get an A.
Very ambiguous tests. If you want to do well you have to memorize the new testament and read his mind. His lectures are always filled with random information that isn't at all organized. Many lectures he Doesn't even get through the material. The material that he never posts online and isn't in the reading. Nice guy, not that great of a teacher
Not a good choice. His exams are ridiculous. They consist of a bunch of random facts, events, definitions and places; there is no telling what he will put on them and the class is based almost entirely on exam performance. Not uplifting at all! Find someone else to take your REL from.
I was so excited to take this class, but my enthusiasm waned in this class. The tests are ridiculous and the lectures uninspiring. Sure, you don't have to do a ton of work in this class, but I'd recommend taking it from almost anybody else. He's a nice guy, but it's not worth it.
Dr. Whitchurch is very smart and gives some great insight. I loved the class, but deffinately the hardest class of the semester. A lot of reading and studying and the tests are really, really hard. You never know what will pop up from random 20 second subjects in class or stuff from the study book he never even went over. great guy, hard class.
Great guy, not that great of a teacher. His tests weren't as much based on solid doctrine or historical timelines, but he liked to pull out the tiny little obscure details and throw them on the tests. There were so many that he pointed out that you didn't know what to study either. I wouldn't recommend him.
Brother Whitchurch had some great insights and I really enjoyed his class.
The homework was manageable, but the exams were tough. A lot of test questions came from class discussion. Problem is, his lectures seemed haphazard and he went off on tangents and would always be behind on what he wanted to cover. Aside from that, he was a very nice man. He invited the class over to his house for an ice cream social.
Professor Whitchurch is a very nice man, however, his class was so difficult. After studying for weeks and memorizing all the material he handed out, I was still blindsided on the test. He goes off on tangents in his lectures and makes continual references to outside sources without stating what they are or how they relate to the class.
Brother Whitchurch is great! I loved the class, but the powerpoints aren't available online, and attendance is taken (like all religion classes). There's a few tests, one paper (do your best and you'll do fine). He really cares about his students and is willing to help. Has LOTS of stories and pictures from time spent in Jerusalem, which is cool.
Tests were impossible. He said that he tries not to be too specific on questions, but then you get questions like "In Luke, chapter 2, verse 16, who is talking?" The final was even worse. He gave out vague study guides which were worse than nothing, and his powerpoints and notes are not accessible. He doesn't know how to teach a class.
Do not take Rel250 from him. His class was the hardest one i've taken so far and it shouldn't have been. I was extremely disappointed in how he made and graded his tests. He barely curved the final and the average was in the low 70s. I put more work into this class than any other this semester and it was the only class I didn't do well in.
Literally the most boring professor I've ever had. The best thing about his class was the jokes that were so painfully awkward, they were funny. Other than that, it was just plain boring, and a little difficult compared to other religion classes.
This class was not only difficult, it was completely useless. I tried keeping up with readings but there are so many of them that the chances of you remembering the correct material for the test questions is extremely low. He also doesn't give out too many assignments making the essay (which is harshly graded) and the exams your final grade.
In this class you write a pericope paper, but several other classes do it as well. Tests can be a little challenging and some questions are obscure facts, but if you attend every class and do all the assigned readings, it's not too difficult. Grading can be a bit sensitive because most of the credit comes from the Paper and attendance/participation
Dr Whitchurch is a great teacher. You will learn a lot in class, but he is very specific about what you need to know for the tests, so there is never any surprises.
He gives lots of readings and expects students to remember little details for the tests which make up a majority of the grade. There is also a big research essay which is graded harshly. His lectures are good though he fails to gets to all the content planned and then promises to curve the test to account for the things he failed to teach.
Overall, I really liked this class. It was just unnecessarily difficult when it came to exams. The questions are really specific, so even with the study guide it's hard to know what to expect. He spends a lot of time in class telling stories that are great and super interesting, but then does not get to the material you are actually tested on.
I really enjoyed taking christ and the everlasting gospel from Brother Whitchurch. He mentioned something to the effect that his ratings on this site are what they are because most of the people that write reviews do so because they don't like him or the class, so I wanted to balance his reviews out a bit. I wouldn't put him at a 5 but pretty close
This guy is probably the worst religion teacher at BYU. He expects everyone to memorize the New Testament, and care as much as he does about the tiny tiny details in the New Testament. The tests are tricky, and if you haven't memorized the 4 gospels, you probably won't get a great score. I would not recommend this class from this teacher.
Professor Whitchurch is really nice and cares about his students. However, he often went on tangents while teaching so we were always really behind on the material. There is a long paper you have to write that is pretty hard. Tests were hard.
Don't take this class from Dr. Whitchurch. He gave ridiculously long reading assignments and the tests were unnecessarily difficult, usually focusing on minor unimportant details mentioned briefly in class. I was looking forward to learning lots of doctrine in this class, but all I got was some dry New Testament history and unimportant random facts
He is very old school and makes you work for it. Though the class was rigorous, I appreciated the challenge to step up and devote more detailed study to my scriptures. Exams were straightforward if you studied religiously for them. I appreciated his emphasis on gaining a stronger testimony of the Savior and his divine mission from the class.
Ehhh, he's okay but not the best religion professor out there (far from it actually). Find yourself someone who doesn't make a religion class feel like a train that's coming right at you. He is a good man and is very nice, but his coursework is ruthless and he expects you to become an expert on the smallest of details from the New Testament.
Brother Whitchurch really knows his stuff. I learned more about the New Testament in his class than I have known in my entire life. My deepened understanding helped me feel like I better know and appreciate my Savior. He is older and lectures a lot. He assigns a lot of reading. The tests are not bad if you study every day. The results are worth it.
For a class called Christ and the Everlasting Gospel, you think you'd learn about the gospel. Dr. Whitchurch delves into linguistics, history, and geography, but very little religion. He is very lecture heavy about things that seem unimportant or at least unrelated to the class. I do not recommend taking from him.
Dr. Whitchurch doesn't just speed through the material. I can tell his intent is to allow us time to carry Gospel truths from our minds into our hearts. His background at the Jerusalem center and in the life sciences bring the New Testament to life. The class requires careful attention and good note-keeping. I had an online Covid class experience.
He loves what he teaches, and I appreciated learning from him, but he is not suited for a live online (Zoom) class. I would have enjoyed his class more if I had been able to take it in person.
Dr. Whitchurch is clearly very knowledgeable about the New Testament. He would often go on tangents about obscure gospel topics during class, but the lectures were overall well-prepared and visually appealing. I feel like I would've enjoyed him more in an in-person class. Make sure to be on top of the readings and know your Bible Dictionary terms!
He grades very toughly on essays.
Professor Whitchurch seems like a super nice guy but I was dying in his CELG class (religion 250, no blank above). Your whole grade is based on 3 tests and like 2 quizzes. The tests are SUPER hard and extremely specific. DO NOT recommend taking this class from him. I have always done very well in school and I have a low C in his class right now.
Not what I signed up for. Prof. Whitchurch taught the class more like a New Testament history class. He lectures pretty much the whole time, and often doesn't get through what he planned for the day. Course grade is based on self-reported reading, attendance, and the midterms. Also doesn't post anything (schedule, assignments, etc) online
This man, just like many other religion professors, has traveled the world and taught at Jerusalem for who knows how many years. He had a lot of really cool experiences he liked to share in his early 2000's power points so get ready for a bit of story time. He was super cool and he taught doctrine for the most part (as opposed to trivia)
Brother Whitchurch is kind, but I did not like taking this religion class from him. I was excited to learn more about the New Testament and develop my testimony of Christ, but much of the lectures felt like Bro. Whitchurch was just reminiscing about his travels to Jerusalem. Did not feel very spiritually strengthening in my opinion.
As a person, he's very sweet, kind old man. As a teacher I find him incredibly frustrating. It took us 3 weeks to get through the first day of class. He goes on long personal tangents, and rarely if ever does he directly answer a question. He will not post anything online, including lecture slides, and won't let you take pictures of them.
Assigns and expects way too much work for what's supposed to be a 2 credit religion class
Prof. Witchurch cares about what he teaches and is well-informed. This is not a class about the gospel of Christ, it is an intense detailed history class. His tests are nearly impossible to study for and they are practically the only thing determining your grade. His lectures are unclear and chaotic and you aren't allowed to take pics of the slides
He's a super nice old man, but he definitely rambles in class lectures. You can tell he is passionate about the material but his classes aren't very captivating & it's easy to fall asleep. Also, none of his material is online which is a huge hurdle that makes it harder to makeup classwork if you miss class. He's a good guy but I wouldn't recommend.
professor Whitchurch is a great guy but his class seems to be more based on the history of the New Testament. It's almost impossible to study for his exams since he post nothing online. He goes off on random tangents in class and struggles to get through the lectures.
Probably one of the worst classes I have taken at BYU. This class has nothing to do with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and everything to do with extensive memorization of history and bible dictionary terms. It is needlessly difficult for a gen ed religion class. He is so nice, but takes anywhere from 2-4 days to finish a single days worth of content.
Dr. Whitchurch is a kind and engaging professor, you can tell he's enthusiastic and passionate about what he teaches. There are quite a lot of readings, but considering this is a class revolving around Jesus Christ, that isn't unexpected. His study guides are great tools for preparing for exams, and his expectations are clearly stated. Great class!
If you are someone who has studied the scriptures frequently in our life and you are wanting to increase in your knowledge, Bro Whitchurch is a great teacher! He teaches a lot of context and history that, to me, brings deeper meaning to the scriptures. You have a good amount of scripture/ bible dictionary reading, and that's pretty much it for hmk!
