looks like mick jagger from the back of a 400 person hall

Does look like Mick Jagger...talks like Christopher Walken...class is interesting although his lecture tone is ZZZZZZ...but this class is tight...

looks more like Prince than Jagger, really. the class isn't so bad- just too long, and too many ppt slides.

this guy is pretty boring when it comes down to it...the subject matter is really interesting but when it comes to the actual lecture you'll probably fall asleep. the only thing that kept me away were all the notes that you have to take at top speed.

Reminds me of Christopher Walken. You don't need to do the readings if you take good notes during lecture. Bring laptop, goes fast. He uses powerpoint, but take notes on what he says. Fairly interesting.

He is very demanding in lec, lots to write and he lectures over his power point. TA's are the key to passing. I got a 'B', but it did require some reading. A good class, but only if you're interested in the subject!

AMAZING professor! He is a very intelligent and interesting professor. His upper-division classes go more indepth on the subject material, and you benefit from it extremely!! Tests were easy and fair, and the huge paper was actually kind of fun.

Sooo boring! Voice is monotonous, and his lectures are so dry! Makes really lame jokes that he writes into his lecture notes. Wears black from head to toe, which is creepy. He also wears socks with berkenstocks. weird. but tests are a breeze.

I love this class! White makes sure you understand, and his voice is so easy to listen to! He makes note taking easy as well. Go to all the lectures and you'll breeze through his tests. Oh yeah, and he has a good sense of humor :)

One of the best professors at this school. He is an extreemly interesting guy. Really loves what he teaches and get's the students interested, I love this MAN! Looks like Andy Warhol, it's awesome.

very very easy class. for the tests just make sure to the review sheets...you dont even really need to read anything. a pretty interesting class and a good teacher

i like him--he seems quite eccentric. his jokes are funny and although the class isn't super interesting, it is fairly easy.

Despite the fact that I think he might be a vampire, the class is relatively easy; you don't have to read the boring material. He's a funny guy, don't look him in the eye.. he might voodoo hex you. He's cool though. Rahuldeep is the best TA, take the class! Caution: Not a look at MODERN religions

His voice is a bit dull which makes it hard for some to pay attention, but he definitly knows what he's talking about...plus he's cute (in an odd way)

Very very boring, but super easy, class. You don't even need to do the reading, just know all the words on the review sheet for the midterm and final. The class would probably be much more interesting with a different professor, but White knows what he's talking about. Some of his jokes are funny.

White is a good guy, his tests are pretty straightforward, you only need to review the term sheet he gives you. He's pretty funny, but not the most enthusiastic lecturer. All in all, the readings can be dry but the actual material is pretty interesting. Relatively easy, interesting, take him.

Interesting and knows the material well. Bring a laptop and type the notes, you'll be relived when you go back and can search for the words on the review sheet.

lectures are incredibly boring but the class is relatively easy, you get a list of terms to study for the test and thas all you need to kno for it...makes it very straight forward and easy

Lectures are quite boring and he loves going till the last possible second. I agree don't even do the readings they are worthless. Take notes with a laptop if you can so when you get your list of terms you can quickly find them.

This teacher is great, I loved this class alot, I recommend it, his class is fun and easy, his TA's were also awesome, I recommend this class to anyone. it's easy, interesting and great.

besides his annoying ass voice the class was super interesting and pretty easy. i didnt do any of the reading and got a B. there is a little project in discussion section but its really easy.

White is way better in smaller classes than large lectures. I've also taken RS 12 and the difference is amazing. I recommend his upper division classes over his lower div any day

This teacher is awesome! Know's his material and is very helpful in and outside of class. Only bummer to the class is the 15 page paper, but thats upper division for ya. Class is on "Creation Myths" so all you out there that do not want to hear controversial historical facts/ideas about your religion be warned you might get a little bugged.

i worked with him in a small honors section, and thought he was awesome. very interesting class subject, and he taught it well. he is worth trying to work closely with.

He's amazing, very straightforward. Doesn't try hard to be funny like other annoying profs. If you're interested in the subject, it should be a great class.

He doesn't beat around the bush, go to lecture and thats basically what is on the test. Very knowledgable man. Write down what he says because he only writes the spelling of terms on the board and doesn't use powerpoints.

I thought Professor White was a really great professor... you can tell he really knows his stuff. I don't think the class was exactly was I was hoping it would be, but it's still fairly interesting. The lectures seem long but when you pay attention, they're actually really cool and white has a good sense of humor. Not too much reading either :)

David Gordon White is precious- he really knows his stuff.. but unfortunately, the class was nottt as cool as I had thought it would be. The lectures are boring, and you end up just writing everything from the power point. Good news is, it's pretty easy- make flashcards of all the terms from the list your TA gives you, and you'll be set!!

Really liked this class. If you go to lectures, take notes, and do term paper prep work you'll do well. Had a 12-15 page paper instead of final.

The lectures can be really boring and you do take alot of powerpoint notes. The midterm is very easy if you studied the study guide. Its multiple choice.

Took alchemy seminar with him, great class. You could tell he is very knowledgable and is fascinated in his subject. He could answer every question in class and was awesome. Got his degree in sanskrit and does traditional yoga. Cool guy.

Used a powerpoint for lectures, but kept interesting. There are assigned readings for every lecture but I never felt lost/confused for not doing them. Aside from reading, there was one 3-page essay I had to write.

I took Yoga, Alchemy, and Tantra and I think that Professor White is the man. Knows his stuff and is very interested in the subject matter. It was a pleasure taking his class and talking with him.

Great Professor. I've learned a lot from him and hope to take future classes taught by him. The textbook isn't very useful, since it is only composed of excerpts and has no additional info; however, that is completely irrelevant because his lectures are crystal clear. Professor White is the best professor I've had at UCSB. Inspiring man!

Prof. White is so interesting! I am a bio major and had never taken a religion class before, so I didn't expect to take much interest in it, but I loved this class! Very interesting and easy! If you show up to section, listen during lecture, and put in a couple hours of studying, your exams will go fine and you'll pass with flying colors.

I found prof White to be pretty awward but funny. The class is interesting, and attending lectures is necessary to do well. If you attend lecture, the readings aren't super necessary. You write one essay, and have a multiple choice/fill in the blank midterm and final. Overall interesting and easy.

Super easy A if you just study every single term on the study guides he gives you. Alot of studying when midterms/finals come around but really easy stuff and very interesting!

not a bad GE to take for pnp. 30% section grade & 30%midterm & 40%final. lectures can be realllyyy boring though :( he can also be pretty funny at times. i bought the book and only opened it once

I really loved taking Religious Approaches to Death with him! I understand that his lectures could get boring if you take no interest in the course, but he was chill and it was an easy A. Pretty much you just had to show up to lecture to take notes. He even gives a study guides for his exams!

Took Religious Approaches to Death really interesting class. Multiples choice tests are tough but there is a study guide for both of them if you do those you will be fine. I recommend paying attention to howwhat religions are similar. Class is more based on drawing connections than anything. TAs are super helpful and knowledgeable, get Porath!!

VERY interesting class! It's very interesting learning about other religions. One midterm and one final. Midterm was multiple choice and fill in. Final was multiple, fill in, and you have to answer two questions. Got a B, but could have completely received an A if I had actually put more work in which I now regret.

I LOVE Professor White. I always looked forward to going to his lectures. There is VERY little writing & reading in the class-- just quite a bit of memorization, esp. to prepare yourself for the (tough, but fair) midterm-- but it all is very interesting and presented in lecture. He's really funny and makes the subject fascinating. Great teacher.

Took this class because of how fun RateMyProfessors made it seem. It was insanely boring. Long, monotonous lectures. Would go past class time. Too much to memorize&learn. Information is confusing. turned out I only needed to read to participate in section. Study connections. Not just the vocab sheet. Study all the images. Bad choice in the end.

Professor White is one of the best professors I've had at UCSB! He really knows the material he's teaching and drops super funny jokes here and there. Nothing's too confusing and everything is super interesting if you pay attention. Super organized, and usually clarifies things. I love the man, I loved his class!

David White is a super chill professor! I would take his class again, his lectures are very dense and there is a lot of memorization. The most important thing you can do for this class is to study the connections between the religions. Midterm multiple choice can be pretty tough, but the fill in portion is easy if you go over the study guides.

The coolest and funniest professor I have had so far. He really knows what he is teaching and lectures are almost always entertaining.

Professor White is literally so chill. His lectures were very dense but interesting. He also lightened up the mood by telling jokes and interacting with the class. Absolutely loved this course!

i am in love with this man. very eccentric and really thought provoking and cool lectures. absolute chiller. the only class i went to consistently in fall. multiple choice questions are really hard, so go to every lecture. if you arent into philosophy/religion you might find it boring, but i loved. grade is bc i missed final by accident.. 10/10 tho

My favorite professor so far! He's a super interesting guy and has a lot of cool stories. His lectures are never boring, but he does NOT post them online so you need to go to class. RS12 itself is super interesting; reading Prof. White's book is not 100% mandatory but it will help you. Love this class!!

To be honest, many students complain about this class and it is not that bad. This class is pretty interesting and if you study and attend lecture, the class is manageable. However, it requires a lot of just memorization so if thats not your thing then maybe take something else. Prof White is hilarious though.

I really liked Prof White's teaching style, and I found the material interesting! Some topics were drier than others. The textbook can help w/ contextualizing lectures, but it's not necessary. Go to lecture and write down EVERYTHING; even the minutia is fair game. There's only one paper and 2 tests. Lots of memorization! Pay attn to connections!!!

David White is so awesome. You do have to show up for class (he doesn't take attendance but it's helpful for the midterm and final.) He is passionate and funny and I loved every minute of this class

He seems passionate about what he does & will go out of his way to help u! I had an issue when the final was scheduled, he was gonna let me come in his office 3 hours early & be there early so I could take it, this was amidst the corona outbreak so we didnt stay for the final but the thought was nice. Hes a great teacher & a funny guy.

I absolutely loved professor White's class! The subject was extremely interesting and his lectures were funny and entertaining. He has a TON of experience in this field and it shows. The class was heavily based on his textbook and lectures. Only one paper and the midterm was pretty straight forward. Luckily, the final got canceled because of Covid!

It's his last year but I actually didn't think he was as people said. As long as you memorized the terms on his study sheet you should do decent on the midterm and final. His lecture before the final was basically 50% of the final anyways.

Dr. White was one of the most interesting people I have ever met, really wish I could have talked to him more. Lectures can be a little dry at times, but content is super interesting. Ordered the book, but didn't read too much of it. Midterm and Final were definitely challenging, but info was great. Discord chats get nuts.
