Great class. Very insightful professor. Makes you think. Lectures are usually open discussion. Minimal note taking. Four exams determine your grade. Do the extra credit!
If you freak out with poorly compiled tests, dont take this class. He is very grouchy and bordering on rude sometimes. I think he is arrogant, but I do think he wants the best for his students. He does care. Although I have to say, its about time for him to retire!
Dr. Williams was the best professor I have had at ASU! He is insightful and considerate to his students. He has interesting lectures (talks about current news) and wants his students to voice their opinions. Very laid back class...4 tests determine your grade- go to class!
Dr. Williams was a great guy, and his class was really eye-opening. It kind of makes you think, "what the f." His lectures don't directly follow the readings. The readings are super easy, though. The only bummer was that he has lots of true or false questions on his test, but just study and show up to class (if you miss too many, you don't pass).
i had him 3 years ago and his class really did open my eyes to the effects of the media on the real world and how WE perceive. the class is easy, the tests are easy, but DON'T MAKE HIM because he will call you out. i've seen it done. he's a great professor and class is easy.
He is very critical of his students if they dont read the New York Times. He can easily make you feel stupid and doesn't even feel bad about it.Dont take this class...
Dr. Williams' class is extrememly easy if you go to class and pay attention! Take notes on the articles he mentions and underline the passages in the text in order to do well on the exams. Talk to him after class about movies because the more he gets to know you the better the class will be.
This is a great class. It will really open your eyes about the society we live in. Go to class and be respectful otherwise he will embarrass you. Grade relies on 3 out of 4 exams and an optional extra credit assignment. Exams are easier than most. Class is basically a forum to express your opinions about the book and current events.
He made me feel like an **** in class, wasn't respectful. Talked while it was quiet and he didn't like that. Class didn't have much to do with the test but it was a chance for students to talk and discuss. Don't take if your not going to argue only 1/3 of MY class got something out of it.
He comes across as sarcastic and hard, but he's a really nice man. He is very understanding, but won't tolerate rude students, which seems fair. I walked out of his class, always thinking about what he discussed. His tests come from the book and papers he discusses in class. It's easy, all you have to do is listen to his lectures. Very funny man
Overall not a difficult class. Tests are strictly from the book, articles discussed in class, and material handed out the lecture before tests. Every tests we took had questions that he specifically said would not be on the test. He is very opinionated and loves to talk about his Ivy league education.
As a professor, he kind of sucks because he really likes to talk about his own life, but it's hard to see how that relates to sociology. However, he is a good person and his stories are funny. Going to class shouldn't be mandatory, but it is.
Williams is basically one of the worst teachers I've had here. He sits in front of the class and speaks about his life. Even in a class of 120, he still notices when you text or don't pay attention. Likes embarassing students. He picks out 5 of his favorite students and has discussions with them every class. Tests are strictly from the book.
If you read the New York Times than take this class because he will love love love you!! He basically just talks about newspaper articles and random news everyday. There's four exams but he drops your lowest and theres one extra credit assignment. The first two exams were kind of hard but after we told him that it was difficult, he curved it a bit
Interesting lectures. I could listen to him all day. Has a different look on things. For tests...write down everything he says that's in the book, and any material he brings to class (mostly articles). I would take this man's class again.
Your grade is based on 3 out of 4 tests, he drops the lowest score, and NOTHING else. He offers an extra credit paper that is worth 2 points, I recommend doing it, as even with the extra I had a 69% and I got a C in the class. As far as the class goes, in the beginning he takes attendance, not sure if he uses it for anything, but he notices.
As long as you don't have the intelligence of a rock, you will find his lectures stimulating. He is VERY PASSIONATE about sociology. Everything is clarified in the syllabus. Read the book and you will do well. If you like to text or sleep in class, he is not the professor for you.
This class is a waste of time. I think he may have been a good prof 20 years ago, but has turned into an old man who won't stop telling us damn kids how ignorant we all are. His belittling rants gets old after the first five straight weeks of it. Lectures have nothing to do w/ exams yet he insists on taking role in a class of 100. I don't recommend
This was potentially the worst class I have ever taken. He is hard headed and any other opinion besides his is wrong. He claims he only tests you on class discussion but that is not true. His lectures are irrelevant to the textbook and extremely boring. If you are not a good test taker do not take this class. Actually, nobody should take this class
I paid for a sociology class, not for him to stand on a soap box and preach to us his opinions on politics. Very off topic and doesn't talk about the material that ends up on the test, making it a very difficult class. Also treats his class like freshman high school class, somewhat disrespectful. I wouldn't recommend
Talks often about his UPenn education. Often off topic. Claims test are relevant to lectures, but this is not the case (in my experience). Offers extra credit paper worth 3 points. Will not allow laptops at all. Picky about note taking methods. Passionate about subject, teaching but be sure to focus or otherwise difficult. Easy to get ahold of.
Dr. Dave was one of my favorite professors during my freshman year at ASU. People always gripe about him "not teaching the subject." Those people are just too ignorant to realize that the stories that he tells the class about his life pertain directly to the subject matter. Great teacher. Great man.
Lectures often veer off-topic and are barely relevant to curriculum. This instructor is an aging liberal ideologue who has reached his dotage. Class "discussions" are geared toward indoctrination rather than instruction and exchange of ideas. Extremely arrogant and hardheaded.
Every semester at ASU one professor has taught me a life-long lesson. Dave Williams did that. If it weren't for the potential he saw in me I may not have made it into the Cronkite journalism school. He's a hard teacher with hard tests, but he can tell when students put in effort and want the grade. He encourages you to always keep reading.
His lectures are useless, never about the test besides one random question. Very biased, always off topic. Cant bring laptop to class. Makes you feel stupid if you get information wrong, or he disagrees with the subject. Sides that, tests is all about book, although sometimes the small details, names, and tables. Study book hard, and youll pass.
Dr. Williams was by far the worst professor I have had at ASU. If you walk into class a second late you looks at you and tells you how big of a failure you are in life. I would highly recommend another teacher for Sociology 101. I truly say Dr. Williams did not teach me a single thing.
Dr. W is, without a doubt, passionate about the topic at hand and he points that out regularly. Be mindful of every potential detail in the book - from caption to graphics - and you will succeed. Patience with things that are not appealing are the keys to achievement. He does not activate the Facebook application. Class wasn't offered for tutoring.
Mr Williams assumes all of his students to be stupid and apathetic, and teaches the class accordingly, which is to say, not at all. The class consisted mostly of very uninteresting preaching on behalf of the Democratic party. Test were mostly straight forward, mostly from the book. Lectures are mandatory. This class was insulting.
I can't stand this man! You are treated like an absolute child in this ridiculously easy class. I have missed a total of 2 points the entire semester yet he tells me I don't care about my education because I didnt write the 3 point extra credit paper. He preaches all class and says he wants discussion but tells you you are wrong if you dont agree.
Dr. Williams is a fabulous professor. All of the stories he tells in class pertain to the subject matter - if all his students would actually pay attention, they would realize this. Read the book, take notes on the review at the end of the chapter, and you'll be golden. He knows his stuff and has valuable things to say. I loved his class.
Well this was the worst class ever. Your entire grade is made up of 4 tests, and so if you really suck at taking tests, you're screwed! He takes attendance of 100+ students.Tests are strictly from the book, so read that! He hates the Cronkite students, especially if they don't read the NY Times. Very opinionated .Not considerate. not recommended.
Dr. Williams is the most condescending, and arrogant man I've ever met. He encourages you to speak up in his class, but when you do, he shuts you down. He calls people out left and right. Spends lecture time talking about cream puffs and his childhood. Most uncomfortable class I've ever experienced. DO NOT take his class.
This class teaches you not only about sociology, but about life. Dr. Williams is a fascinating man, and if you listen and participate you will walk out of that classroom having learned a ton about life and about yourself. Know key terminology, quotes and people along with figures discussed in class and you are golden on the tests.
This may have been my favorite class of the semester. Dr. Williams makes sociology interesting by relating it to current events and his own life, and I loved the discussions we had in class. Make sure to talk to him outside of class and participate, and do NOT argue about his grading methods. You're in college; you can handle high-stakes exams now.
He's not the best teacher by academic standards; his 4 tests are a little weird and some things are vague, but he drops the lowest at the end. But the discussions in class are great, and he has a lot to offer. He'll respect you if you respect him. Definitely a class worth taking.
This class was so boring. Half the time we wouldn't even talk about whatever we were covering that day and just going on about something random and he gets hurt if the class won't contribute a thought about what he's talking about. The tests are pretty easy and if you sit in the front or the back he won't call on you.
Class is sooooo boring! Do Not Take This Course... Dr.Williams talks nothing of the subject, just about his life.
Boring class don't take he's murder it's a guessing game on what's on the test
Professor Williams wasted my time every single day in that class. He does not ever cover course material. He is also extremely rude to students on a regular basis. I have no idea why he is even a teacher because everyone I know finds him to be extremely frustrating and useless.
Horrible teacher. Doesn't stay on track. Picks on students to look up random information that doesn't pertain to the class. It's anyones guess as to what's on the tests.
OMG worst class ever we don't even go over the course material. It is a serious waste of time. He yelled at me for writing the vocab in class. He is cool but his stories are not relevant and if he didn't take attendance I wouldn't show up to class.
This is by far the WORST class I have ever taken, he is the WORST teacher I have experienced at ASU. He is unable to teach in a large lecture setting, and refuses to conform to the needs of a student. The only thing he is good at is calling a student out for taking notes in class.NOT ALLOWED!! DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! HORRIBLE
His lectures have nothing to do with his tests. I nearly failed this class and I would have gotten a low C if he didn't give everyone 10 ex credit points after we collectively failed one of his tests. He spent some lectures rambling on about nothing. My friends hated this class too and I never met anyone with a good thing to say about this class
Be focused in cass. Don't take intense notes. A sentence here and there is okay, but don't write 3 page outline or the vocab list. You can get away with just reading and coming for tests, but he often tell you almost exactly what's on test IF ur in class. Only grade is 4 tests, lowest of first three is dropped. Ask for help, he will oblige.
Dr.Williams is a very nice person, but he COMPLETELY sucks at teaching. Your overall grade is from 3 test. Do not take Soc with him, take it with another professor so that you can actually learn!
Just turn back now! This class is the absolute worst! If you like being put to sleep, spending money on a book you don't use, and playing guessing games on tests then this is the class for you. Nothing you talk about in class is relevant and all you do is fall asleep. & the tests? Good luck, he must find his questions on google...
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Ignorant & rude teacher. His lectures are pointless and tests examine every last word in the book. The class is based on 3 tests (which are extremely hard) for a total of 100 pts. I recommend avoiding this class like the plague.
Class is a joke I never went because he never talked about anything that was on the test besides like two question. So you have to memorize basically 3 chapters and pray you memorized the right stuff so bs don't take this
All he does for an hour and fifteen minutes is talk about random stuff that do not, whatsoever, apply to the tests that he gives you. Lectures are long, grueling, and sleep-inducing. He tells us to ask questions, but when we do, he condescends us and doesn't answer properly. If I were you, I would avoid taking this class at all costs.
Prof Watson dedicates his lectures to his personal life stories and opinions. He's also extremely rude to students and he speaks so softly that you cannot hear him. When tech support comes to fix his microphone, he just insults them and continues not using it in a lecture of 200 people. His tests are only passable if you study the book.
Professor Williams has many stories to tell you, some and maybe most have nothing to do with what he is teaching. There are four tests and that's it, if you are a bad test taker do not take this class. You have to pay attention the the names of people and the tables from the book. You have to teach yourself.
Only discusses his personal life during class. You must read the textbook cover to cover in order to pass. I hated going to class, literally dreaded it, but he takes attendance so I had to. He calls on students often to discuss their personal life in front of everyone. He seems like a good person but absolutely awful professor!
Awful teacher, opinionated, rude, and overall just a mean guy. Used lectures to talk about his policitical opinions and his personal life. No mention on material during lectures. Then called out the students by name that didn't come to class. Made everyone really uncomfortable.
Your only grades are tests and there is no preparation for them. You have to figure out what will be on the test on your own and learn it on your own. He talks only about himself and his life experiences in class. Doesn't believe in +/- on grades. Will not give extra credit. Doesn't take criticism or different opinions then his own very well.
Professor Williams doesn't teach the "traditional way" you are used to having. Every class he has everyone talk about what's going on in the world and how it relates to sociology, and asks for our opinions on it. The only grades are the exams, but he drops the lowest one. Very easy if you read the chapters. He has a lot of wisdom. Glad I took it!
Professor Williams is opinionated, rude, and calls people out in class. His lectures have nothing to do with the tests and I did not learn a single thing. Stay away.
Dr. Williams has some insights into life and some of his personal stories are interesting. However, he has a big attitude problem. He is disrespectful to the students a lot of the time (sometimes it is deserved, sometimes not) and tries to push his own opinions in class. Too bad there is no other sociology professor for the downtown campus.
Dr. Williams has a lot of insight to give to you about life, but not necessarily sociology. The material was taught by reading the textbook and taking notes, not through lectures. However, he is such a caring professor and will help you if you go to his office hours and participate a lot. He's a great person, but an okay professor.
If I were you, I would avoid taking this class at all costs. For an hour and fifteen minutes is talk about random stuff that do not, whatsoever, apply to the tests that he gives you. Lectures are long and sleep-inducing. He tells us to ask questions, but when we do, he condescends us and doesn't answer properly.
This is a "teach yourself" type of class. Your final grade is dependent on only four tests that you take throughout the semester. Class discussions are not relevant to any of the course material- the only hope is the book.
Do not take this course. He is extremely opinionated and does not accept opinions that are not his, exactly. His classroom time does not relate to the material, rather, it relates to his political views and how much he doesn't like America. I will never recommend this professor to anyone ever.
I would avoid taking this class and just do it online. When you show up to his class you will not learn a single thing from him. He will bring up a topic you will discuss it that's about it. Then you'll take for test that had nothing to do with anything you discussed in the class and all from the book.
He's a nice guy, very opinionated, has about 4 or 5 students he pays special attention to and always calls out for some reason. His lectures almost never have anything to due with the material on the exams, but the study guides from the book reflect on the exams. I would study the guides the night before and would get an A on the exam.
The only grades in the class are four (relatively simple) tests about the textbook and some other emails he sends you. Dr. Williams rarely talks about sociology and the actual content, rather, he prefers to have discussions about his life story and current events. He's a nice guy, but his class does not feel worth my time.
You'll either hate him or you'll love him. He only has 4 things in the grade book, 3 exams and a final, so the exams are SUPPER important. They aren't too hard but you defiantly have to study from the book to pass them. He goes over some of the material in the exams but not everything, but you can learn a lot of valuable life lessons from this man.
Dr. Williams has insight to many topics. Yet he lacks professionalism towards students and his attitude in class. Numerous times calling out students who didn't do well on tests & at his discretion he volunteers students to teach the class. His lectures are all about his life. You can't yawn in his class either .He made that very clear.
Definitely a teach-yourself class. Only grades in BlackBoard are 4 tests, & despises any tech that ASU gives him for the class (McGraw-Hill). We only listen to his life stories & obscure NYT articles. Skims over actual material & gets upset at ?s about content. He doesn't use class time effectively at all and is disrespectful towards students.
He is a very unspecific and, quite frankly, a rude professor. He calls out students for missing questions on tests in front of the class, argues with students andnever discusses what is going to be on the tests. You rely on the textbook heavily as all of the questions "come out of the book" however, he never states what you should study.
Take this class online.
Williams uses his class lectures to tell personal stories, then acts surprised when his students get bad grades on tests (due to not covering any of the content). Also, randomly calls out on students in class and makes a point to embarrass them. Watch out.
Dr. Williams is a wonderful individual, but as an instructor I felt that it was somewhat difficult to succeed as I would have liked to in his class. His lectures are somewhat off topic, he mentions somethings that will be on tests in emails so read them. READ YOUR TEXTBOOK! there are no study guides unfortunately. Good Luck!
Extremely wise and knowledgeable
Professor William is a great man but not a very good teacher unfortunately. His lectures are not anything that will be on the tests as he just talks about random things. There are one 4 grades the entire semester, which consists of 4 tests only :/ Take this class online because it will make your life a lot easier!
Dr. Williams is an awesome professor! He is immensely personable and wise. Also, he truly cares about his students and their direct success. Ultimately, make sure to read the chapters thoroughly, participate in sociological discourse in class and an A should be easily attainable.
The ratings for this professor are quite mean I think. He is a really good professor, the tests are extremely easy if you just read the chapters (which by the way are not long at all). He's not your traditional "read off the powerpoint" and "homework assignment" kind of professor but he is really cool.
He is a good professor. He's kind of "old-school" but he is very intelligent and knows his subject that he's teaching more than I can say for some other professors. In the beginning he talked about his bad rating on here and it made me feel bad.. he's really not a bad guy & the class is so easy!!!
Everyone says bad things about him, but most of the things on here are not true. This class is the easiest class I've ever had. read the chapters and you'll easily get an A. He is not rude, he's not mean and he doesn't embarrass people. I don't understand why people are so mean to him on here. Just show up, listen, and interact. Easy A!
Instead of having the lecture be about what's on the exam, he takes the time to explain certain terms or show how certain terms are used in real life situations. He answers questions that you have and tells you what to study the most so that you'll do good on the exam. This class wasn't hard at all and I'd recommend it!
really cool teacher, lots of real life stories that relate to the subject, funny, can seem rude at times but he really isn't, he has the best intentions and his tests are super easy. read and study the chapters, and you'll be good!
Dr. Williams spends most of his lectures telling stories from his own life. His stories are somewhat interesting and you do learn a few life lessons, but he does not prepare you for the tests at all. You have to read the entire chapter and teach yourself all the concepts, because you learn hardly anything that is on the tests when you are in class.
Dr. Williams is a man with many stories to tell, unfortunately, that's all ever does. This is one of those "teach yourself" classes in which the textbook is your only saving grace. He isn't particularly professional either, he is extremely emotional and will single out students who happen to look away during his inane lectures.
He barely goes over the book in class so the majority of class is spent listening to his stories. He calls people out for doing things he doesn't like, which gets pretty annoying. There are no assignments so it is hard to keep your grade up with only having tests in the grade book. I would not recommend taking SOC 101 with him.
At 1st, I was like "oh great an old guy." He doesn't give HW assignments and every test is 3 chapters. YOU NEED TO READ EACH CHAPTER BEFORE CLASS. Pretty much all you do in class is talk about random things which he says is related to what you were supposed to read (but it isn't). Dr W is a good guy who makes you learn how to study for yourself.
Dr. Williams is a nice man. If you read the textbook and mark what his is talking about you will do fine. IDK why everyone bags on him, he is a fine man. Do your reading and ask questions. You will learn if you try. No homework. Just four exams 33 questions each. and he drops the lowest of the first three. Just try.
I would not recommend taking this class! All he does is tell stories. He barely goes over the textbook. I feel like the lectures are useless. This is the kind of class where you have to teach yourself. Class is based off 4 exams, his exams are not too bad! as long as you study the vocab and read the book. He is sometimes a little rude.
This professor swears that what he talks about in class is related to what you read. By the way, read the chapters prior to class meet (literally word by word). He picks people at random and can be rude. If I could give him a 0 I would. I hated this class. He has no assignments or presentation lectures. Your grade is all based on your test be ready
he is a really good professor !!!!!!! Just read the book and you'll be fine
Dr. Williams is a educated and kind. He is dedicated to his students learning more about the world. He tells a lot of stories about his life that may *seem* off topic, but can be applied to the content very well for "real life" application. The grade is strictly based on tests, the final (not cumulative) replaces your lowest of the first three.
This professor will say he is a good professor and to not go based off of rate my professor, but trust me rate my professor opinions are true. He is always off topic and gets into lecture talks that don't even matter and are nothing related to the exams. There are three exams and that is it. Get ready to read and legit self teach yourself.
I did not enjoy taking this class whatsoever. He has too many irrelevant stories and talks only about himself during class. Very sleep-inducing lectures and I had to thoroughly read all the chapters in order to get at least a low A on the exams. He calls out students and can be very disrespectful for no reason. Avoid taking this class at all costs.
Williams is a nice enough man, but shouldn't be teaching anymore. If you do go to lectures, you're in for long and semi-pointless stories about his life. If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you. Exams are based solely on the book and learning anything that will be on the test will have to be done on your own.
This man needs to be fired immediately. I have no idea why he is still teaching. Your entire grade is based on 3 exams and he offers no extra credit. The content on the exam is never an overview of the material in the book, instead its only about random people and dates. He does not teach in class and only talks about his life for and hour.
Hes a nice guy in the real world and is often humorous. But like all the other comments on here, he doesnt really teach. He wants you to teach yourself and then will maybe discuss 1 or 2 questions on the entire test. Also cares way too much about cellphones and people spacing out/sleeping
The class was interesting but the professor was NOT GOOD. He tells to many stories that do not relate to the material in class and he tends to push his political views onto students and gets upset when others don't agree with him. His tests are the only grades you'll receive in his class. There's no way to get an A unless you do well on them.
Dont do it. Lots of personal stories that do NOT tie in with course materials. You only get 4 grades, so be careful and study the best you can (even though some things are just not discussed in class at all). Good luck, soldier.
worst professor ive had at ASU. he legit doesn't teach, you go to class only hear his life stories that have nothing to do with the content. you basically have to teach yourself. i would definitely not take this class again, this was the biggest waste of time. he is a nice guy but i taught myself & the only grades are from the tests- good luck yall
Dr. Williams's classes were very annoying. We would go over things in class that didn't match with the tests. Then we needed to basically memorize the entire chapters to succeed on the exams. I ended up getting an 89/100 as a final grade which pissed me off to the max. I wouldn't recommend taking his class.
We're only graded based on three exams. Don't have to attend his class after the first one but he calls out volunteers and chances are he might notice you aren't there. Don't sit in the back because you won't hear him talk. Read the book, everything you're looking for is there. Overall, he is a sweet old man and is passionate in teaching sociology.
Ok, so this guy does not really cover the material page by page, HOWEVER, his stories are true classics. I don't think I've had more fun just listening to a class. He has a lot of wisdom. He can catch you by surprise with a question, so you have to be paying attention, but man is he funny and interesting. I couldn't recommend him more.
You only have 4 tests and thats it. No extra credit, no discussion. All the test ask you about are dates and books. Nothing ACTUALLY worth your while. Lectures are just him talking about random stuff and getting mad if you dont read the book. Please dont do it.
You have to do well on your tests. Don't be a slacker and try and whine your way to extra credit, because there is none. Study and participate in class. He tries to encourage people to do well IN LIFE. He gets it and tries to share his experiences.
Truly a great professor. He's very invested in his job and does all he can to inspire his students. The only thing I disliked was he required us on Zoom to keep our cameras on and would call us out individually if we didn't. The only assignments throughout the semester were four quizzes, all fairly easy. He's very heavy on reading, so be prepared!
He's an amazing professor that cares a lot about his students and he wants his students to pass his class.
Dr. Williams was a very enjoyable professor, his class is introductory so it is not very difficult, see covid-semester for my grade being a B. The lectures are different, they're more geared to understand the meaning behind the content rather than simply giving test answers, although he does sprinkle those about. Attend class, read the book, pass.
fishman is very passive aggressive and never answers questions correctly. hell respond to your questions with another question , he also gets mad if you dont understand the lesson and will make you feel stupid for not knowing the material. worst professor ive had and really rude if you try to engage in learning
Dr. Williams was a very nice professor. However, there are four exams as the only grades in the grade book. Lectures mostly talk about real-world application of the material. Lots of reading if you want to succeed on the tests!
Daily rants about people's camera's not being on and no one reading the material. You're going to be teaching yourself, he doesn't teach in lecture, just talks about random stuff and gets mad if you can't follow. Had to talk to my therapist a few times about how much this class infuriated me. Made peace with it. I wish him a happy retirement.
