Professor Wilson's class is very tough. I took honors chemistry in high school and understood the material. Now I can barely keep up. There's a book he recommends, but you basically NEED it. Its a book of all the notes, and I do not have it. I take notes by hand, but he SPEEDS through the notes. He acts as if he doesn't care if you get it or not.
Professor Wilson is a great lab instructor: very fair and he will help you if you're sick or need an extension. He is clear in what he wants with the sample lab report and his comments on graded assignments.
He speeds through the notes. Doesn't seem to care if you understand whats going on. A lot of homework. His test are nothing like what you do in class
I really liked Professor Wilson for Chem120. Although he goes through the notes fairly quickly in class, his office hours are SO HELPFUL. He goes through whatever you don't understand and will work with you on it. However, you HAVE to work for your grade. This class is not easy- you must work hard!
I took two years of chemistry in high school and this class was still tough for me. Dr. Wilson is a bad lecturer and makes mistakes a lot while teaching which can be confusing. He always promised that tests will be easier than the homework but that's just not true. I would certainly take him over the other option, but be prepared for a tough class.
Any chem 120 class you take will be hard, but Dr. Wilson tended to move slower than the other professor. Although not the most clear lecturer (he often makes mistakes and gets flustered) I would recommend this class over Funk. Be prepared to work hard, go to every review session, and office hours are helpful.
I had chemistry twice in high school and I still have to work pretty hard for my grade. He makes a lot of mistakes during lecture which can be confusing. Also he promises that quizzes and homework are harder than the tests, but I don't find that to be true. He seems very willing to help, but I don't like that he holds office hours in SSC.
I took Chemistry in High School for two years and got A's with no problem. This class is not like that. He gets behind the first week and rushes through the rest of the material. In order to pass you have to attend review sessions each week, which is where most the material is taught. He messes up the examples he gives in class which is confusing
Honestly, it's hard, but it's hard no matter who you take. He is a REALLY nice guy but he is unorganized. He either gets behind by focusing too much on one thing or he speeds through things making it hard to keep up. This is his first year so I know he's getting used to things. We don't do clickers that often. Make sure you get the purple book.
He's very frustrating to have. He rushes through material in class because he gets easily distracted or spends way too long on a single topic. He is very unorganized and gets flustered a lot. Many times he won't cover what's on the homework. He claims that tests are easier than homework and quizzes, but that's not true.
Wilson is very disorganized and all over the place in lecture which was annoying. Chem is already a confusing course so this doesn't help. However, GO GET HELP from him. He is much clearer and concise in office hours or at the learning center. He will go over tests with you too. I was confused in lecture but always asked for help and pulled a B+.
Professor Wilson is a nice guy. However his lectures feel like they go on forever and they can be a bit confusing. He makes mistakes in his presentations which makes it confusing. The tests are hard and so is the homework. you definitely have to put a lot of time into this class. If you don't understand the material he is always willing to help.
Dr. Wilson is a great guy. He is a little unorganized, but give the guy a break... he hasn't been here very long. If you did well in high school chemistry you should be okay. You will not be able to pass this class if you skip doing the homework and go into a test without studying for it. GET THE BOOK WITH THE POWERPOINT SLIDES IN IT.
Although Dr. Wilson does not always explain concepts very well and can appear disorganized at times, he truly does care about his students and will try to help the best he can if you have questions. He can be a pretty tough grader on lab reports later in the semester, but he does give good feedback and will help if you ask!
I took Chem in high school and easily had A's how he teaches it, I always seem to be confused. Sometimes the more you pay attention the more confused he has you. He is so disorganized it is hard to follow.
Absolutely awful. Mr. Wilson is a nice guy, I do not doubt that but he is also the most disorganized person I've ever met. I missed multiple homework deadlines simply because he would change them last minute. He spends like all day going over simple stuff and then is stuck rushing through the more complicated stuff. He's an awful professor.
He was a pretty good professor. The course is tough, but he's always willing to help if you need it. Sometimes a little disorganized, but it wasn't a huge problem.
This was his first semester at JMU so he got behind in the material, but he is so helpful if you go to office hours and reviews. The homework is really hard but just get help from him outside of class. Chemistry is a hard subject so don't get behind because it's hard to catch up. You'll get what you put into the class, especially out of class work
Honestly it would be easy to give Mr. Wilson a break as he is a nice guy and it is his first semester here. With that being said he was highly disorganized. I feel as though with his inconsistent due dates he should have dropped a homework assignment or two. The homework is due on random days and is changed often.
If you are required to take Chem 120 I would choose Dr. Wilson. It is a HARD course, however the grades for his class were significantly higher than other classes with different professors. He will work to help you if you ask, and he is great one-on-one.
For his first semester as a college professor, he did well. Our class average was higher than the other chem 120 professors. BUT he kept getting behind and rushing through tough material. Then he would switch around due dates and it got confusing. The disorganization was problematic. He did hold office hours and review sessions to help students.
Professor Wilson was VERY DISORGANIZED, probably because he was new this year. He usually tells the class what is going to be on quizzes and tests, so you have to show up if you want to do well.
LOTS of full lab reports and he can be rude at times but if you" fire back" he will respect you for it. Overall for his first semester he did ok. I would probably take someone else if you have issues with writing full lab reports every week.
My biggest complaint with Mr. Wilson is homework deadlines. Homework would often be due the same night we finished that chapter in class (as if we certainly don't have an evening class). Also, the homework was due at 9/9:30 (don't ask me how he decided which it was, totally random). He was also very disorganized. I typically really enjoy chemistry.
I went the whole semester with a B+, but I did terrible on the final so I received a C. Great professor he really wants to help students understand Chemistry.
Wilson is good at explaining concepts and actively tries to help students This is his first year teaching at JMU, so he still needs to work on time management Clicker questions, Online hw, Quizzes, and Four tests, final/midterm Replaces the worst test grade with the final grade Hw is worth more than quizzes, but hw is hard so work ahead
All homework is online through WileyPlus. Lectures are sometimes helpful but what helped me the most was going to office hours with specific questions. Don't wait till the last minute before exams! Professor provides a practice test/study guide before exams. Final is cumulative but isn't bad if you study (actually its easier than the other exams)
Dr. Wilson makes this class much more difficult than it needs to be. I feel like his disorganization directly correlated with how I did in the class. I missed a few deadlines because of what I felt like was miscommunication or flat out disorganization on his part. I am a very organized person and an extreme amount of deadline changes is confusing.
He is a very caring person! He is still learning how to be a professor and that can be frustrating. You definitely need to go to SSC Learning Centers for help on the material. Over all he is great choice for CHEM 120!
Overall, there are no good chem 120 professors. Wilson is extremely unorganized and is still figuring out how to be a teacher, which is frustrating for students. He genuinely cares and is trying, but its just not working. He isn't very good at explaining things because the material is "too easy" for him (umm okay?). Tests are hard.
He is not bad. Tests are tough but if you read the textbook and go to office hours you will be fine.
This class was a lot harder than it needed to be. We raced through the last 3 chapters and everyone was screwed for the final.
This class isn't as bad as everyone makes it seem. Wilson can sometimes be unorganized, but he really wants his students to succeed and will help you if you ask for it. The material can be tough, but if you put in the work, you can do well. Homework counts a lot, but you get unlimited attempts. The final is also much easier than any of the exams.
I really tried hard to do well in Chem and ended with a C+ overall. Wilson was very disorganized and was very confusing when it came to grades. Literally we found our grades out a couple weeks before the final which sucked. The tests are really difficult in my opinion because there's not many questions but if you work hard you'll do great.
I honestly think that Wilson is not bad IF AND ONLY IF you COME TO CLASS and at the same time you HAVE TO READ THE TEXTBOOK as well as DOING PRACTICE PROBLEM AT THE END OF THE CHAPTER, and if you have any confusion, coming to his office would be great and then you are gonna be good. I personally think the final exam is CRAZY, not EASY. Work hard !!
I thought Wilson was very disorganized for the most part. Tests were a lot more difficult than homework and other assignments. If you want to get a good grade you really need to work for it and attend class. The class can get very frustrating but overall he wasn't terrible.
Professor Wilson is my all time favorite professor! He made me love chemistry! If you put in the work, go to class, & OFFICE HOURS, there is no excuse to get anything less than a B. A lot of people give him a bad rep because they are lazy. Although a little scatter brained, he is honestly so nice and has a passion for chemistry!
JMU just does a very poor job teaching lower chemistry courses. David Wilson was by far the most unorganized professor and he often leaves out parts of information making the concepts more difficult then they already are. Most people have to retake the class because it is a prerequisite. If you do not have to take this class, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Well, unless you like getting D's or F's on your test then done take him. You only go over material once so it doesn't really stick. Also, he uses terms that CHEM120 students don't even need to know so he makes the material confusing.
The class is really hard, but he tries to make it as simple as possible. I got a terrible grade, so I going to take CHEM120 again next semester. I am choosing to take Dr. Wilson as my professor again the second go-round because I thought he was a good prof. Definitely go to office hours and get him to work out extra problems/help you. He's nice!
dont buy the book. wilson is best choice! his reviews are bad but overall hes actually a good/easy professor. he does make a lot of careless mistakes, but his class is easy if you pay attention, do your work and go to office hours for questions. the tests are only a little bad because theres only 20 (multiple choice) questions, so itseasy to do bad
take him!! If you pay attention and study you will be fine.
Terrible professor. Literally did not learn a thing and am going to have to retake the course to fulfill my requirement for nursing. If you have the choice, do not take him!
He definitely cares about doing what is best for you, the class content is obviously hard, but he manages to simplify it. He is a really funny guy and i enjoy his office hours, but he is pretty unorganized. It doesn't really impact your grade though. He is very accessible outside of class, but tests are difficult even though he provides test review
David Wilson is a good teacher. He lectures a lot, and his tests are hard. Get ready to study and go to the learning center. He's nice but does not answer emails. The answer guide for the textbook is not required and i never used it. For this class, effort is needed. Its difficult.
Dr. Wilson is very passionate about chemistry but sometimes disorganized. He is available to meet outside class and responds emails quickly. Pay attention in lectures and go to office hours a good grade.
He is a no-nonsense teacher. He tries to help by giving u the slides b4 class and going through them in class (sometimes way too fast) so pay really good attention in class. If u skip, u'll miss really important info. GO TO PASS SESSIONS if u want a good grade. The tests are really hard - I studied for around 5-7 hours a day for 2-3 days before it.
Assignment due for every lab and always a quiz (they're really hard but don't affect your grade much at all) he'll help if you ask for it and explains things really well. We didn't have lab reports at all. Midterm and final are no more than 8 questions and he gives you a study guide for them. I'd take him again.
I can't decide if I actually liked him as a professor or not. Although he is new, Dr. Wilson was very disorganized. If our class ever got behind, he would race through chapters to have us caught up. The tests are pretty hard. There are only like 20 or 25 questions on them total. He replaces the lowest one with your final grade however.
Dr. Wilson made hard content make sense. He's able to describe things as simply as possible, and he goes through different examples of every type of problem, so you know what to expect. The class is still difficult for people who aren't in love with chemistry, but I'm glad that I took it with him.
Wilson is the messiest and careless teacher I have ever had here at JMU. The tests are impossible, his lectures are unorganized, and he is very condescending. His office hours are always packed and if you ask for help he acts as if it is a problem and does not feel like helping. Skipping class is not a good idea, worst teacher ever DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Dr. Wilson knows his stuff but he rushes through everything. He is very helpful in office hours but its always very crowded so go to the learning center and PASS sessions if you need help. The tests are extremely hard but he gives you extra credit opportunities so make sure you take advantage of them!!!!! I went to every class and still struggled.
Wilson knows chemistry for sure, but he was very disorganized and went through the information very fast. The tests were challenging and heavily weighted. There is a good amount of homework to do and studying a lot is a must if you want a good grade. Take advantage of office hours and PASS sessions if you can. It's not easy, but not impossible
This class is challenging but that's whats expected from a Chem class. Lectures are sometimes hard to follow and confusing but he is willing to help, has good office hours and posts a lot of video lectures that are very helpful. 4 tests and replaces lowest with final grade. I took chem with little to no background and got a B my first try.
hes a pretty good teacher for such a difficult class. So many people struggle with getting a good grade. I worked SO hard for a B. you need to go to office hours and show up or else you wont pass. In office hours it seemed like he sometime got frustrated but over all nice guy. He wants you to do well. Tests and quizzes are DIFFICULT!!!
Dr. Wilson is awesome. He can be a little unorganized, but he makes harder material easy to understand and is SO helpful in office hours! The homework is hard and annoying but he'll tell you how to do it if you just ask. I would definitely recommend taking him!
He wants his students to pass and will help you out one on one. TAKE ADVANTAGE of the extra credit! It's tedious but it is worth it! I thought his class was easy because it is basically high school chem.
Wilson is extremely unorganized. If you are not willing to put in the time passing this class will be difficult. I had to work extremely hard for a B-. Tests are very difficult.
Dr. Wilson is the best option you have for taking CHEM 120. It really is not as hard of a class as people make it out to be. He gave a lot of extra credit opportunities and the final was easy. If you do better on the final than on a previous test, it replaces the grade. Wiley was kind of annoying, but you have a lot of time to do it.
if youre taking this class get ready to work hard! he talks a million miles a minute and most of what i learned was done on my own. make sure you go to every class and pay attention. Not horrible but not my favorite class
Real talk avoid this man. He is the most inconsistent and unorganized professor. Lectures, homework study guides etc going over all different things. Nothing aligns. He is terrible at explaining concepts but you need to go to class for clicker questions and for notes. Your best bet is youtube and the learning center tutors. GOOD LUCK
Take Mr. Wilson for CHEM 120!!! He has much higher scores than the other professor available and he is not as bad as people make him out to be. You need to go to class and pay attention in order to do well on the tests and you must do the homework! If you put in the effort for this class, you should have no problem getting a good grade.
Wilson has your back-- he's a fair grader and the tests cover exactly what he outlines in class. Go to the lectures and pay attention, because he clearly gives hints about what will/will not be on the tests. I didnt use the textbook, but if you need to use it, its easy to read and understand
This class is HARD. However, Dr. Wilson is much better than all the other chem profs. He makes the class as easy as he can, and he actually does care about his students. But definitively study a lot for this class bc it's really hard, study the most for the first test bc that will bring your grade up if you're able to get an A or B. Buy the book
Wilson is the best possible professor for Chem 120! He really cares about the material and how you do. He leaves ample time in class for you to ask questions so don't be afraid to ask! The material is challenging but if you do the Pre Lecture Reading and pay attention in class it's understandable. Great man! Take him you won't regret it!
I really liked Dr. Wilson as a person. His tests are difficult and can be tricky to make sure you understand the material, if he offers ORION extra credit points DO THEM they will help your grade A LOT. Go to the learning center for help you will not regret it. Not an impossible class if you put the effort in.
Dr. Wilson is a great guy and pretty good teacher, but the material we are currently doing is way too challenging for CHEM120 which is supposed to be an Introductory course. Tons of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry which nobody in the class was expecting to do. Can't say I signed up for this. Very challenging.
The class is organized but he makes a lot of changes and sends out a ton of emails. They started teaching biochem and organic chem in the class and he definitely needs to learn to teach it better but overall was not a bad professor. He wanted you to succeed and was willing to work with you and help you do well.
Most students can see that he cares about his students more than most professors which is solid, but is sometimes disorganized and rushes the material leaving everyone confused. He tries hard for students and thats all a student can really ask for. overall a good professor just really hard material. so always read ahead and study
Awesome professor!! Really helps you understand the material by explaining it clearly and to the point. Just come prepared and do the HW.
You kinda need textbook, but I used it more in the beginning. I started getting lazy and never read the textbook near the end, and I still did fine. Wilson is much better than Funk so take him for sure. He's nice, and good during office hours. Really hard class. My advice: try to get an A on the first test cause it'll save you in the end.
Lots of homework, easy but time consuming. Take the homework seriously tho bc it'll help you learn the material. First two test are easy, last few get hard. Don't start slaking in this class because you won't recover. It gets pretty hard towards the end no gonna lie. Test are timed and you will feel rushed. Clicker questions for attendance
Makes you work for it but over all a good professor. Homework graded for completion. 4 tests, multiple choice comes straight from lecture. Pay attention.
Wilson is a cool guy, just very scatter-brained and disorganized. I would say that his class is not that hard but you really have to try for your grade. DO THE HOMEWORK AND HOMEWORK QUIZZES (helps bump your grade). You don't have to come to class because the powerpoints are posted on Canvas however, he does do clicker questions almost every class.
I thought he was great and never understood why people didn't like him. he knows what he's talking about and his lectures were clear. always gave hints about tests, SO GO TO CLASS!! he is disorganized but if you stay on top of the stuff yourself you'll be fine. Four tests and a VERY EASY final!! he is the best choice for a chem 120 professor
dr. wilson is a funny guy and knows what he's talking about when it comes to chemistry. he's a little disorganized but if you do your reading, you'll be fine. he gives hints to test questions in lecture and does a lot of group work during classes. the tests are a little challenging but the final is a breeze.
Dr. Wilson is very helpful in the Lab. He will help you with any questions and go over the lab with you after you are finished. He does grade harsh on things like significant figures and calculations but he will check your lab for you if you ask. I would recommend him if you are taking a lab.
This is my second time taking the class and I can affirm that Wilson is the easier of the 2 120 professors. The test are honestly pretty challenging, but the curve at the end of the semester is super helpful. There are 4 tests and a final. The final is pretty straightforward and replaces the lowest of the 4 unit tests. Office hours are a must.
Chem 120 is not an easy class but if you pay attention in his class and take good notes, he basically teaches you everything you need to know for the test. His test are also fair and is from his lecture. I would highly recommend him for Chem 120!
David Wilson is a great professor, he goes through lecture pretty fast, but if you go to office hours, he will explain it to you until you get it. He cracks jokes during class and is pretty laid back. Reading the book before going to class helps!
David Wilson is a great professor. Chem 120 is going to be hard no matter what but I think Wilson does a good job on teaching the material. Wilson is not very organized but he does give you all the information you need for the test in the lectures. He also gives you plenty of ways to practice for the tests. Study hard and you'll do fine.
This is my 2nd time taking Chem120 w/ Wilson, but first time over maymester. Chem120 is a lot of work, especially if it is your first time taking it. However, most of the material is easy to grasp, it's the wording/vocab on tests that may be tricky. But, Wilson is not out to get you and the tests and overall class itself is very FAIR. I got an A!
Dr. Wilson is a good professor. He explains things pretty clearly and his tests are fair. You HAVE to study a lot and do the homework. I highly recommend the tutoring center. This was my FIRST time taking chem 120 and I got an A so it is possible. He replaces the lowest exam with the final and the final is VERY simple and easy. PAY ATTENTION
He is disorganized and a little scattered brain. He drops low grades at the end if you do well on the final. Becoming a nurse is so dang hard!!!
CHEM 131L isn't hard at all. But Dr. Wilson takes points off without explanation. He is really disorganized and doesn't grade labs quickly. Each week there's usually a pre-class quiz but if you go to SSC you'll be straight.
The class is easy, and the homeworks are extremely easy if you look at your notes and the textbook, but the tests can be really hard! He's a good guy, and he can be funny at times. He can be good at explaining things, but can also be confusing and goes through things fast!
Dr. Wilson is awesome! Chem can be a frustrating class and it moves pretty fast but as long as you take advantages of all the resources (tutoring center, office hours) you'll be fine! if you study hard and make an effort, he will do his absolute best to help you! Best proff for chem120!!!
Chem was a hard class, but Im glad I got to take it with Wilson. He was very funny and explained things well. He may have gone fast at some points, but if you work really hard and take advantage of the resources, you should do decent! Tests were pretty hard, but the final was much easier! And you have drop grades. I thoroughly enjoyed it :)
He was an amazing professor, he really cares if you show that you are working for it. Homework are not hard but are super time consuming. This class takes up most of your free time. Only thing Wilson lacks is that he doesn't get that you don't get it, leading to some concepts to be confusing. There is a Huge curve at the end
He's a nice guy and he's always available for help. There was so much homework but it only counted for 5% :( My only complaint was that several of the tests didn't match the learned material and the class average very often reached below a 50%, which should never be the case. He's definitely the best chem professor though, take him for sure.
This class was definitely hard but Wilson is so caring and really wants you to succeed if you are willing to work for it. He is definitely a great guy and he tries to make jokes even though chem sucks for everyone. If you work really really hard and go to PASS and office hours and put 100% effort into everything you will be okay!!
I learned more in the lab than I did in the lecture. He was a tough grader but just know hes great. He has a quiz before every lab but if you did your research, youll do good.
Dr. Wilson is one of the best professors at JMU! He has clear grading criteria and tells you exactly what you need to do before every lab. Gives a quiz at the start of every lab. ASA assignments are fairly easy also. Don't slack off with the assignments and lab because they help your grade! I did well on the final and ended with an A-. Take him!!
Class consist of 4 test, homework, workshops, and quizzes. Grade is mainly from your test. Do well on the test and you'll be okay. BIG curve in the end. Not an easy A at all, but it is possible.
Chem 120 is a really dreaded class, but if you end up with Wilson, I consider it a good thing. The class itself is hard for everyone, but Wilson is always willing to help his students if you ask. Grade determined on 4-5 tests, so do well on them because he also does a curve at the end. An A is not easy but definitely possible if you study.
Out of the two chem 120 professors, take Wilson. The class average right now is a 74, and the tests are DIFFICULT. He is a good guy, just rushes through lectures so its hard to comprehend. The textbook is accessible online through the access code you have to buy for hw so don't spring for the $150 book from the bookstore.
Wilson is one of the better 120 professors. The tests are definitely hard, but you get to replace the final with your lowest score. Sometimes he forgets to grade things and it can be frustrating. Attendance is not mandatory but there are occasional clicker questions
Chem 120 isnt an easy class but Wilson sets out everything you need to do well its just on you to study it. Homeworks are long and tedious but help a lot because they force you to practice. His grading style is nice too because he drops many grades in the end.
Chem120 is tough but take it with Wilson if you can because he writes the exams! Go to PASS sessions and take the time to do the homework because it's really good practice. Lots of work but an A is possible if you work really hard!
I first took this class with Funck and got a C. Wilson teaches the material well and although he may be confusing at times, he is always willing to answer any questions you have. Make sure you do the homework and come to class for clicker questions. He curves most tests a few points and the final is the easiest thing you will take in CHEM 120
Wilson is one of the better professors for 120, but he can still be confusing during his lectures. There is online homework every week and group work during some classes. The tests are pretty hard, but he curves them and the final grade.
Doesn't every lecture, and makes you learn it all by yourself. Wasnt helpful at office hours either.
Picked interesting novels for the course. Gave great prompts to get the mind going. Very clear on expectations and guidelines of papers. Papers were long, but discussions on reading strategically helped us figure out what to write come paper time. If you aren't good at analysis don't take the class. You HAVE to read the books.
He's better than other 120 professors from what I've heard but still not great. He changed it up this semester so that he doesn't lecture in class and he puts us in groups and makes us do group work every class instead. Video lectures online. The concept sounds nice but I never had time to watch the lectures and my group was horrible.
Hes a very nice guy, but unless you are good at chem and just understand the subject you shouldnt take this class. In class we had worksheets which were very hard and in our own free time we have online lectures which are nice but he doesnt include everything he wants us to know. He also doesnt have a TA and no pass sessions.
Hes a very nice guy and knows a lot about chemistry. He doesn't really answer any questions at all in lab though
Each homework has at least 40 questions with multiple parts to each. He does not lecture in class so you are teaching yourself everything. The exam reviews are nothing close to the exam, and he is no help in office hours. definitely do not take this professor he is the absolute worst. He makes the class 10x harder then it needs to be.
this semester he did a self teach type thing- put all lectures online expecting you to teach yourself and gave group quiz workshop type things each class. Tests were really tricky too. I would not take him unless you're naturally good at chem and are good at teaching yourself.
Wilson tried a new way of teaching this year where he publishes video lectures instead of lecturing in class. Class time is spent doing workshops with groups you did not get to pick. There is frequent homework that is hard and never correlates with what is on the tests. Tests are hard and the test review doesn't help at all. Do not take this class!
i dont care what anyone tells you, DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN. worst professor i have ever had . only video lectures , dumb worksheets in groups, reviews literally do nothing. tests are WAY too hard. stay away from him, hes awful.
For starters, he doesn't lecture. He makes lectures online then puts them on Canvas and expects you to watch them before class. During class-time you do group work which no one ever knows how to do because he doesn't teach. Theres a lot of homework and quizzes due almost every week and the tests make no sense and don't align with whats taught.
I did not like him as a professor. Apparently, he is one of the better Chem 120 professors but he did not lecture at all. He changed his teaching style from the past semester and did workshops for every single class. He would post video lectures on canvas for you to watch on your own time. I did not sign up for an online class.
Although this was by far the hardest class Ive ever taken, I wouldnt want to do it with any other professor. I admit the class structure was a little beaded up with a lot of outside work, taking advantage of his office hours brought up my grade, and built a great friendship with him. He seems intimidating, but hes an amazing person and professor
Class was a breeze if you have taken chemistry before. Homeworks were easy if you read the chapters or took notes on lectures. There were workshops every class which involved you working with a group of individuals that you are seated with. Most people fail because they don't try on the homeworks or workshops which are intended to help you learn.
Professor Wilson can seem intimidating at first, but once you get to know him hes a great guy! My lab group was struggling the first day, but Professor Wilson pushed us all to do the project without help and by the next lab we had a better grasp of what to do. Professor Wilson was also willing to help lab students with lecture material when asked.
He's not the most helpful prof, I went to him numerous times and he didn't offer me one helpful tip. There were no pass sessions so I just lived at the chem center in SSC. I worked my butt off and I still got a bad grade. The lectures were online and in-class consisted of hard worksheets. The tests were crazy hard. Get ready to teach yourself chem.
Hes actually a really funny guy. Take him for chem 120. Lots of group work in class which is only helpful if you have a good group. chem 120 sucks regardless but he curves so much at the end and takes off a bunch of quizzes. homeworks are long but you have a week to do them
He is extremely disorganized and chaotic. HW is on mastering chemistry which has to have answers in a certain format and he didn't even know how to answer some of them without the key. doesn't explain well. he is better than the other chem profs but he is not good at all. use the tutor center all the time no matter how comfortable you feel.
Professor Wilson is a really good Chem 120 choice. Go to his office hours for help on homework you wont regret it. His test are straight forward if you study and go over the homework. Study guide for tests dont really help tho.
The Professor did not add any grades onto Canvas except for the starting syllabus quiz. I was very uncertain about what my grade was throughout the class. He did not teach well, kinda just expected us to figure it out.
Professor Wilson did not teach at all. I was expected to learn the material on my own and show up and have group work graded for accuracy. You do not get to choose your group. Most times people do not watch his videos so it leads to lots of frustration on the worksheets we had to do in class. If you go to his office he will get annoyed at you.
Prof Wilson is the better choice for CHEM120. He & the other teacher make their tests together so whoever you take you will get basically the same test. 4 unit tests & a cumulative final. He puts video lectures online which was helpful. But he only tallies grades a few times so you will always be wondering what grade u have.
He can be super nice, but his teaching methods really didn't work for me. He attempted at teaching the material but would assume the students didn't get it so he made up his own analogies. Most if not all consisted of the manner in which he makes sweet tea.
This class is honestly one of the hardest things I have probably ever had to take. Dr. Wilson is a good professor who helps his students, but moves at a very fast pace with a bunch of information to retain. A lot of the work is through an outside website so you have to make sure you are always on top of your work since you do not see it in Canvas.
this class sucks the life out of me. i seriously felt like i was aged 20 years every time we had one.
Chem120 is hard. Mr. Wilson does his best to be super open and honest with his students. He cares about your success if you put in the effort. You will need to make this class a priority and find class mates to help you and it will be okay. Apply yourself and study hard.
Love Dr. Wilson! He is hilarious but also a very serious teacher. He really wants to see his students do well. He drops grades and if you're lucky, he will curve a test or two. The workload is a lot so it is important you are up to speed with weekly homework assignments (the class goes by fast). TIP: Study for the final exam a couple weeks prior!
Overall he is a good professor. His lecture always went over time which got annoying. The only reason attendance is mandatory is because he does clicker questions and they count as participation points. Lots of quizzes and mastering homework takes forever!
Dr. Wilson is a solid choice for chem120. Online is not ideal for a chemistry class but Dr. Wilson did the best I think he could. Sometimes he can be a little unorganized and grading may take a while. If you're willing to put in the work this class is very much manageable and you can get an A. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, it helps so much.
Dr. Wilson saved my grade with his exam curve and his light grading on workshops. I would say he is one of the better CHEM 120 teachers. Be sure to read the textbook and attend all lectures. Make note of things that he highlights in his lectures. Tests are hard but you can study harder. Final is easy!
Dr. Wilson is a solid choice for CHEM120! The class is tough but he makes it doable and curves grades at the end of the semester which saved me. There's a lot of homework but it helps to prepare you for the tests. He's pretty funny too. I'd recommend reading the textbook chapter before class so you are able to follow along better in lecture.
Professor Wilson is very straight-forward in his approach to the lectures. He breaks the content down in digestible ways but either always went over the time or didn't cover as much as we needed. Also, he gets distracted easily and goes on tangents. The Pearson homework can be difficult and long. Really read the textbook and ask for help.
Chem is a hard class but Dr. Wilson tries to explain it until you understand it. He also used real world examples & comparisons to try to help. His tests can be a little confusing, but not hard. Hw are quizzes but you get unlimited attempts (they also help prepare for the test). During class is group work graded for completion. Can def get an A
Honestly, I would take him. Yes hes a little unorganized and tests are very hard, but he messes up so much, his curves are by a lot. He messed up test keys and gave us back points on almost every test. The only reason I got an A was because of how many times hes messed up on stuff. If you just want a good grade, take him he curves a lot.
I took this professor twice for the same chem120 at jmu. The first time he was working by himself and I assumed that he was awful but the second time he was working by himself and is so much better with grading, assigning, and is much accesible outside of class. If you ever need chem120, take him but by himself
Dr. Wilson is a solid choice for CHEM 120. There's lots of homework and his lectures can be confusing at times, but if you ask questions or go to office hours, he will help you. There's also lots of extra credit and easy group projects that boost your grade, and at the end, he curved everyone's final grade several points. Take him!
Professor Wilson might get some bad feedback this semester because he went overtime on many lecutres, but he wasn't a bad professor overall. His lectures and lecture slides laid out exactly what you needed to know and he walked you through each concept. Free textbook, unlimited attempts at homework, and pretty straight forward tests.
Professor Wilson is a great choice for CHEM 120. He really cares about his students and helping them succeed. Chemistry is definitely not an easy concept but if you put in the work and reach out for help you can get an A in his course.
Literally the best professor I have had at JMU. He is very knowledgeable and can seem unapproachable but is incredibly willing to help as long as you come to him. If you really pay attention to the lectures and spend time really trying to understand the homework and activities you'll be fine. Every assignment he does has purpose!
I LOVED HIMMMM, he really cares about students and understands our needs, very considerate. Only fault is that he gets distracted and off topic very easily, but I was impressed by the way he handles this. It may go a little slower than other chem classes but in the long run that's helpful, because the content is hard.
I took his class Fall 2020 and there was lots of practice with homework he gave. It was a lot of quizzes and homework heavy. His lectures were clear but he sometimes got off topic but the lectures were nice. I would take again because he cared about us and our grades and rounded our grades at the end of the semester.
Professor Wilson is a nice guy but he isnt consistent. he never answers emails & goes off topic in every class. he also doesnt teach very well.
I basically taught myself the entire class! the homework & quizzes will make u think that you understand the topic, but once you take the test it's completely different because he throws questions on there that you rarely went over. Goes of topic way too much!He never responds to emails and gets annoyed when you ask questions. Do not take him!!!!!
Do not take him. He does not know how to teach chemistry and expects you to understand it just as much as he does. He skipped so many chapters because he always went off track and ran out of time. Most disorganized professor I've ever had.
Downside of the course was that extra-credit and certain assignments took a very long time to enter the grade book so you never really knew what your grade was. He expected you to know more but if you go to him for help he will help you.
Dr Wilson was the worst professor I have ever had. He was so hard to learn from and always fell behind in lectures. His tests were extremely hard and he was not helpful in explaining information. He was never on track with lessons and everything he taught he expected students to understand at his level.
He was a terrible professor. If you can avoid taking is class do it!!! He never helped with understanding topics and he was always behind. He was by far one of the worst teachers Ive ever had and all he managed to do was confuse me more on topics he should have been able to teach.
He is all over the place. He cares about his students, but spends too much time on irrelevant stuff. The text book is free. Go to the math center to ask questions while you do homework. Unlimited opportunities on the homework. He had a lot of mistakes on the tests. Curved our final grade and tests where everyone did badly.
I came into CHEM120 with a lot of chem knowledge, and I know that if I didnt have that prior understand of chem, I wouldve had to work a lot harder/teach myself in some aspects. Decently helpful, and would go over troubled stuff in class, but disorganized, would skip around, test on information not in the textbook etc.
If you have no previous background in Chem, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Although he goes over basic concepts, he makes it difficult to retain the information. His homework is very hard and other chem majors will tell you that the phrasing is always off. Unless you're great in chem, don't take him.
he's super laid back and nice and has no quizzes or exams with hardly any out of lab work. the ta does most of the work and he's good with explaining any questions. lab procedures are easy and he grades work turned in generously
Im writing this review because I am confused why he has so many bad ones. I took Dr. Wilson for Chem 120 and he is a great teacher. He grades quickly, gives you oppurtunity to get extra credit and the homeworks are unlimited attempts. The homeworks are harder than the exams. It really isnt that bad. Put in the work and you can get an A !
I took Wilson in the Maymester last year and I really enjoyed the class! As long as you pay attention and do the assignments, you will do well! We had 4 exams, practice work/quizzes, and a group project. He was kind of unorganized though, but sometimes that worked out in our favor with exams and content. He's really nice too! Take him!
One of the most disorganized professors i've had; shows up late to class, doesn't get back to emails, and waits until the end of semester to grade big assignments. Lectures were confusing and rushed through and hard to understand and there are exams almost every two weeks.
Dr. Wilson is a great choice for CHEM 120. He is a little bit unorganized but you can still follow the class. Go to his office hours for help with hw and he will be more than happy to help. He has tons of drop grades and a few opportunities for extra credit.
Professor Wilson is amazing. I took him during a summer section for chem 120 and although it was difficult at times, he made it bearable. He was late to class sometimes but he would always make up for it. Super cool guy
mans acts like he doesn't know his own material... neither does the PASS leader. if you dont know any chem from HS coming into it, you're done for.
Doesn't release homework until a few days before its due and makes all homework due on the same day. So it is like 6+ assignments due with very little time to do it. He makes assignments due before he even teaches the material. He also rambles the entire class and does not seem like he knows what he's teaching. Blames his bad teaching on his ADHD.
Dr. Wilson was not organized at all. He would show up late to almost every class and is very jumbled when teaching. The tests are only 20-25 questions making it hard to get a really high grade on tests because of so few questions. He assigned homework the week of the test and it was due that same week. He is just very distracted.
Dr. Wilson can kinda be all over the place sometimes but the class itself isn't too bad. Requires some work to be put in but is bearable esp if you've taken a chem class before it's super easy.
Dr.Wilson is the best professor. You should do fine if you do the homework and pay attention in class. Also, take advantage of office hours if you don't understand. His test can be a little tricky but if you know the material, they aren't bad. He will also curve the test if the whole class does badly.
Chem is hard if you don't put in the work. His lectures can help but due to his disorganization, sometimes things can be confusing. If you go to his office hours you will definitely understand the material better. He gives a lot of materials to study which prep you for exams. Group projects are annoying but easy.
Professor Wilson is disorganized and rushes through lectures. The content is hard to understand unless you have a very recent background in chemistry. Tests are extremely difficult and determine a large part of your grade but he will curve the test if everyone does poorly which does help a bit. Ultimately, don't take him if you want a good grade.
David is the OG. This man is absolutely hilarious. Yes, he is disorganized and rushes through lectures, but it didn't affect me that much. Tests aren't hard but are only 20 questions so if you make silly mistakes your test grade suffers. But there are a lot of other assignments to help balance your grade. Definitely the better chem 120 professor.
Wilson rambles a lot during class but he is honestly a great professor that teaches well(even if at times he goes fast). Although attendance isn't mandatory, you kind of have to go in order to learn the material thoroughly. He curves a lot of your grade and his class is mostly enjoyable. Would reccommend.
Professor Wilson is a really cool person and great friend but he's usually a little late and unorganized for classes. I ended up having to teach myself 3 different unit topics because he "didn't have time to teach them" and still gave us a test on them. The material is pretty basic and he cuts out a lot of the info you don't need.
Very funny! Can be a little scatter brained and often late but gives examples that make it easier to understand harder topics (sometimes). Group projects are fine when you have a good group. Often rushes through lectures and cuts out things that he deems not important. Curves most exams.
Professor Wilson is such a nice and funny guy but the class is hard. The homeworks and tests are much harder than the examples he teaches during the lectures. He is a little unorganized and shows up late to class but he cares for his students. Be ready to teach yourself a lot though and GO TO PASS SESSIONS!
Be ready to teach yourself this class. I did well bc I could do this, but he was not very helpful. Always late, took forever to grade, even was late on getting my final grade in. Got off track in lectures so you would have to watch videos to teach yourself. Lots of assignments so wiggle room for grades, but try to take someone else if you can.
Straight rude and awful professor. STAY AWAY. He does not teach get ready to teach your self a semester worth of chemistry. Got mad at students for asking about their final grade bc he did not put it in, and still has not (3 days after grades are due) said he hated us for asking ABOUT OUT FINAL GRADE! Currently going onto 4 days and still no grade.
CHEM 120 is challenging either way but definitely take Wilson over the other professor. He provides the textbook, gives homework for each unit that provide grade cushion, curves exams, and replaces your lowest exam grade with you final exam grade. He is however quite disorganized and you will find yourself teaching yourself often unfortunately.
This class overall is just difficult. I was so confused during the lectures. But, he's chill and curves generously.
While Wilson is a relatively nice guy, he is a terrible communicator. I had to send him multiple emails and still never got responses back. He was late to pretty much every class even the final. He forgot about our final so we had to have less time for it. The beginning of the semester was paced well but we had three exam in four weeks at the end.
such hard exams and wasn't taught well. talked about random things in class and wasn't able to convey what we needed to know for the exams. don't recommend.
Dr. Wilson hasn't been too rough this semester but some things about him make the class more stressful(showing up late for an exam). His office hours are every day during the week and he will try his best to explain a concept to you which is helpful. His exams are difficult, but also so is chemistry and the homework mostly prepares you for it.
Dr. Wilson is not nearly as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He is slightly disorganized at times but tries his best. He has many office hours time and is very accessible and his office hours are SO helpful. This class isn't easy and you have to put effort in, but he makes it clear he geniunely wants his students to pass. He also curves a lot.
Dr. Wilson is a really great professor. It's harder to tell in a large lecture class but if you you meet with him outside of class he is very helpful and WANTS to help. He has experience as a high school teacher and is really good at explaining things. He is definitely the best option to take for Chem 120, especially as a nursing major.
Look, I failed every single exam (even with the curve) and I still ended up with a B. All you need to do is score max points on the homework quizzes (which has 999 attempts enabled) and the small group projects he assigns. If you can do that, then you'll be just fine. (If you want an A tho, maybe don't bomb your exams like I did lol)
Good teacher keeps you engaged during lecture, moves very fast though. Lots of homework not hard though.
Mr. Wilson is a caring professor who truly wants you to succeed no matter how he may come off as. His lectures are long and move fast, but if you pay attention you will be fine. As long as you get the highest score on the homework which has multiple attempts and quizzes you will at least pass with a B. He is the best option for this class - 7/10.
Attendence isn't mandatory but you will fail if you don't go unless you just have crazy good chemistry knowledge. Tests, homeworks, groupwork, and group projects are weighted about the same so it is really hard to fail. Groupwork and group projects really help weigh out test grades. 100% would take him again.
He was very disorganized and came to class late. None of the stuff on the lectures were actually on the test in the way we learned during class. Everything was super hard. He took forever to grade and didn't have our final grades submitted on time. He was not helpful during office hours and was rude when we asked questions.
Dr. Wilson was a great professor! He truly wants you to succeed. CHEM120 is a challenging course and you have to put the work in if you want to do well in the class. we have 4 exams, 2 group projects, a final and various homework assignments which he gives you 999 attempts for. He is a great professor and I would take him again
Beer lab: TA did EVERYTHING for the class, might as well been the teacher. Sat in his chair watching videos on his phone and would occasionally walk around (once every couple weeks). Would always tell people to put on their safety glasses (reading refractometers) when he never wore his once and sat at the first table in lab. didn't do much to help
I did horrible in chem during high school, so I would say that Wilson is a good choice if you don't know anything. Lecture can get confusing sometimes but looking over the TAs PASS slides was a good refresher and less overwhelming. I somehow managed 90s on exams. Just do well on the hw and go to PASS if you need to
Best choice for Chem 120, Dr.Wilson makes his lectures entertaining with funny jokes. Lots of hw, unnecessary group work, and thick material. However, Cana is the best PASS leader, make sure to study a lot for every test and complete all the hw and quizzes and you will succeed.
Didn't really do much during lab besides do stuff on his computer. Even our TA was getting mad she was practically running the entire lab. Very nice guy but would have been nice to have him walk around a bit more and give some guidance.
Dr. Wilson is the BEST! He is so funny and very knowledgable. Take advantage of PASS and office hours. He moves very quick and is lecture heavy but he does a great job explaining. This class is difficult regardless who is teaching it to you.
I flopped chem when I took it in high school, and Dr. Wilson was able to teach me what my high school teacher could not. He said this was his first year teaching 131, and it showed because he was pretty disorganized, but he's a pretty funny guy and still taught the content pretty well. I'd suggest him as a professor for 131.
Was his first time teaching 131 so ill give him that, but he was super disorganized and always late for class. Was also a flipped classroom so most of the learning I was doing was through videos outside of class, not actually by him. Overall, it's a tough class to get through and super time consuming.
Dr. Wilson was terrible, I did not learn anything in class. His class is a flipped classroom so you have to watch lecture videos outside of class and come to class already knowing how to do everything. He is extremely disorganized, constantly comes to class late, does not give problems that represent what will be on the exams, and overall bad prof.
Super funny professor who makes chem a lot more manageable than the other professors from what I've heard. I did absolutely awful on all of the tests because I'm a really bad test taker but I was still able to get a B in the class since we're graded on homework and projects as well. He made chemistry fairly easy to understand. I recommend!
had to teach myself almost all the material, had only 4 tests and final but dropped lowest test grade, almost always late to class and was his first time teaching this class so i'd recommend taking someone else. besides that he's really funny and makes jokes.
Professor Wilson brings a great sense of humor to an otherwise challenging course. With a balanced workload and plenty of support resources like PASS sessions, you can succeed if you put in the effort. I found unstuckstudy's practice problems really helpful too.
The class is flipped with lecture videos online, but Dr. Wilson does his best to explain the most missed topics in class as well. He explains things really well and is funny about it. Most of class is spent doing group worksheets. He is definitely the best Gen chem professor (in my opinion).
Lots of group work. Sometimes all you do in class is group work and it has nothing to do with the lectures. He's a funny guy, but you really have to teach yourself for some subjects. It really varies with the units you're learning, sometimes what he teaches makes sense, other times I don't understand anything. Tests are super hard
This class can be very confusing and it doesn't help that he's just as confused as us. Nice guy and TA's are helpful and he's approachable. Class is overall not that difficult and there are lots of resources (free textbook + department made videos + PASS sessions + tutors) but get ready to spend all your free time learning the material.
Chemistry is a hard class but Wilson made you feel like he cared about you doing well in the class. He was funny and didn't make the class feel boring. I will say though that you have to learn a lot outside of class because he uses the lecture period to do group work.
Dr. Willison is is funny and charismatic but can be very disorganized and sometimes unclear when explaining exactly what needs to get done. Chem lab is mostly group work and he's always there if you have questions. Just make sure you have a good group as it's the same group you'll be working with all semester!
His lectures typically did not make sense, it honestly made the material very hard to learn. To pass the class with a C was difficult, watching YouTube videos was the only way to understand the material we were tested on. Attendance isn't taken but group work is given during class about once or twice a week and that is a grade you cannot miss.
131 is hard, and blaming the professor for it is hard. This was the first class I struggled with, but it definitely pushed me to learn how to study and attend office hours. He was incredibly helpful one-on-one and cared about your understanding if you went to office hours. Putting in the work and adapting will lead to success.
Dr. Wilson is a fun guy but his lectures are hard to follow. He teaches differently than other professors in the chemistry department and his methods are hard for me to understand. Relying on his lectures and slides is not possible, he provides useful resources from other professors and the textbook is vital. Must basically teach yourself to pass.
Dr. Wilson is, honestly, just "meh." His humor is a plus, but his teaching style could use improvement. He skips a lot of content, relies heavily on group work, and is late every single day. The tests are tough, and poor performance will tank your grade. Be prepared to put in extra time and use outside resources to grasp the challenging material.
While he may be hilarious, it does not help that he is a horrible professor. You must teach yourself as he goes very quickly and does not cover chapters well. He often mentions how many students retake the class, so I would avoid him if possible. Even after attending PASS sessions and having a tutor, this class with him is impossible.
Dr. Wilson class is only test based. The tests are 60% of the grade while homework is only 5%. There are a lot of homework assignments with a lot of questions on each one.
Dr. Wilson is a very funny teacher and tries to provide extra material and support to help. Unfortunately the way he teaches is very interesting and changes class per class. If you learn by going to class and taking notes on everything he says and the PowerPoints then you may do well. Otherwise you'll have reteach yourself the materials for tests.
I hated this class. I learned nothing by attending lecture and I had to teach myself everything. I aced highschool chem but completely bombed this class because it is so test heavy and the tests are so different from the homework and in class examples. I have heard he is good for higher level classes but I def do NOT recommend for chem 131.
Chem 131 is a difficult course and requires a lot of studying, no matter who the teacher is. In my experience, Dr. Wilson was an amazing teacher. Sometimes, his lectures can be kind of everywhere, but if you go to office hours, he is super helpful, and can tell he cares about teaching and his students. Put time into studying and you will succeed.
TAKE DR. WILSON!! amazing chem teacher. he cares about his students and is a good teacher. easily approachable and makes class interesting. attendance was taken. tests are difficult (it's chem), but manageable if you go to office hours/put in effort. loved his class, definitely recommend!
Dr. Wilson is a very nice guy, but do not take his class unless you want to be your own chemistry professor. The lectures are all over the place and he does not go in detail on anything, then assigns homework that take students over 5 hours to complete for a very small percentage of the final grade.
He's funny but he does talk really fast in lectures. I would definitely recommend going to the lectures because it's honestly easier than trying to figure out what you need to know.
DO NOT TAKE DR. WILSON IF YOU VALUE YOUR MENTAL. All he does is complain about his ADHD during lectures, does not finish teaching but still expects the 300+ point homeworks on said topics to be due before we have even covered the topic fully. Will speed through the last chunk of the unit and not explain much the class right before the test.
he sucks. one time he forgot to print out our tests. He blames everything on his adhd and doesn't know how to teach. literally just does the work and doesn't explain how he's doing it. the class felt like we were watching him do his homework.
I actually liked Dr.Wilson a lot, i think a lot of ppl want to blame the professor for a difficult class, you will need to put in work for this class regardless who you get. I feel like he explained everything well and there's additional videos which are really helpful. Btw he had the highest exam averages so in my opinion that says a lot.
CHEM131 is a hard class, no matter the professor. Professor Wilson is a very funny and nice man. However, his lectures are disorganized, and his HW's take years off your life. He does do a lot of drop grades and wants you to do well. Attendace isnt madatory unless it's a groupwork day.
Chemistry with Dr. Wilson was great! He lectured a bit quickly sometimes, but he was always very helpful if you didn't understand a topic and went to office hours. There are multiple exams that can be difficult, but the homework and in-class group work before every exam are super helpful. I would definitely recommend taking him for CHEM.
Take Professor Wilson! The class itself is somewhat difficult, but he's very understanding and his lectures are always clear and entertaining. There is a decent amount of homework, but you usually have a long time to complete it. He makes his own tests (based on what we learn class). And he does drop grades for your lowest scores!
