dave was the TA for this class, and he basically saved it. i would have dropped it or possibly hung myself without him. he would come in and find us all lost and confused and by the end of the class i would have some semblance of an idea of what was going on. plus he's just really dang adorable.
Burton was the actual teacher for this class, but Dave was the only one I ever learned from. His recitation was actually helpful or he'd let us out early. He's also damn hot, despite his thing with cows.
befriend this man! He is so much fun and very smart and gives so much of his time to help people, you can tell it really concerns him for students to understand what he's saying, and he makes things very understandable. girls especially dig him.

Dave is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He works very well with students and is always willing to stay and make sure you understand the material. He is never critical or harsh and he always is an easy grader.
Dave always responded quickly to emails and was very helpful. He's really funny too.
Dave is honestly is the smartest, funniest and best teacher I've had so far. He is ALWAYS willing to help. Unlike the majority of staff at OSU, he does care about your learning. Teaching isn't just a paycheck.
Had him three times, twice as a TA once as an instructor. Without him there is no way i would've made it through MTH306. Very helpful, and a fast responder.
AWESOME. He is one of the best teachers you will have at OSU. Always helpful, funny and a fair grader. Take any math class from this guy if he teaches it. He actually cares about your success.
He is the most amazing teacher ever. Beaver squirrel!
he is the best
great guy. what a teacher
Exceptionally interested in student understanding and comprehension. Doesn't just recite what is in the textbook.
Mention Qdoba and he will be your best friend! He is by far the best teacher I have ever had. I hate math and I ended up get a 98% in his class. He makes everything so easy and fun! Take a class from this guy!!
Dave is by far the best math teacher I've ever had. He is so funny, and exceptionally good at explaining the material. I really look forward to going to this class- which is something I've never been able to say about a math class before.
Dave is super nice and he is very helpful when needed. But I don't learn by the way he teaches. He is very goofy and he doesn't teach like he is a college professor, he teaches like he is teaching to a 3rd grade math class. If you like structure and professionalism don't get into Dave's class.
Best math teacher ive had so far at OSU...actually really funny too.. Very helpful and cares a lot. Also a pretty fair grader id say
This guy is arguably the best teacher only Keith scholman comes close
This professor makes the class enjoyable and easy to follow. If you have the chance to take a class with this professor do it!
Dave is an excellent instructor! Takes time to ensure students understand the bigger picture behind what is going on in class rather than just working problems and spitting out formulas. Also a super nice guy. Highly recommended!
I had taken MTH 251 twice before enrolling in Dave's course. The first two times were unsuccessful and I ended up withdrawing from the course. Dave made the material clear and relevant and I ended up receiving an A in the class. Something I never thought possible after my first to terms of calculus. I highly recommend any math class through Dave.
David Wing is an awesome teacher. He also told our class that he reads what people write about him on this site! So David if you're reading this I love you man, your an awesome teacher and I always thought your jokes were hilarious no matter how lame they were, stay gold buddy!
Is the best 306 teacher there is. If you need to take 306 take it with David. He makes the material so clear, it makes you feel like you are taking math111 not math306.
He is overall a good professor. He breaks things down well and gives plenty of examples in class. He also gives you so much supplementary material to help you understand how to do problems. His Midterm (1) is easy. But be prepared to have your grade tank on the final.
David Wing is a quality professor, take him for a MATH class, he will teach you what you need. Go to class, and it wont be boring with him, makes some funny jokes often during the class, cool down to earth guy. Bottom line, take him if you need to take a Math class
Best math professor
First off. David is so funny. He always cracks corny jokes which I find the ridiculously funny. He is clear, concise and cares about his students! He provides examples and his exams arent that bad. Do your homework study examples and youll be fine. By far my most favorite professor. I wish i could take all my math classes with him for my minor.
Dave was a pretty good teacher. Made lots of jokes... I laughed for his sake. I am horrible at math so for me it was my second time taking 111. I passed the class but just barely. He can be a bit hard to understand and a lot of out of class studying is important to be successful. Take advantage of study tables and review sessions!
The best math teacher I've ever had. Keeps class clear and on point, and keeps you entertained with the occasional joke. You'll learn what you need to learn, and you'll learn it well. For the first time in my life, I enjoyed attending a math course.
Best MTH 103 teacher there is! Easy to get along with.
DAVE :) I hate math, but this was the best class i have ever taken. Everyone should take one of his classes! Attendance is mandatory because he has a lot of clicker questions. But drops the two lowest days. Hands down the best teacher at OSU
very helpful, and cares a lot about his students. very funny and makes class interesting. best class and teacher i have ever had. every class made my day, love you dave :)
Funny professor, he posts his lecture on blackboard. helpful. his midterms are PIECE OF CAKE, but be aware his final is very hard. He curved it 20%. His finals are tricky and hard, most of the problems are something you haven't see.
I am in Daves 252 class and quite frankly, he is not doing a very good job with teaching us students. He wastes a lot of class time with his immature jokes and it distracts me and many other people. When he is teaching, he is not very clear at explaining the concept or answering questions. I am basically teaching myself from the book,
Dr. Wing is a great professor. His lectures are clear and he makes sure to answer all of his students's questions. Just do your homework, written homework, and you should be fine. And if you think he's not a good teacher, it's probably a lack of effort on your part, because he's EXTREMELY helpful :) He will go out of his way if you show concern.
Dave is unique. He makes me laugh every time I go to class, and is the perfect professor. Do work on your own time, ask questions when you need help. This class is a hard class, it has nothing to do with his teaching style. I hate math, but love going to his class because he always makes me smile. He is nice and sweet too. I love Dave :) take him1
He is enthusiastic, funny, nerdy, and super helpful. Don't be afraid to ask questions because he'll be happy to help. His shirts are pretty funny too. Be sure to do the online homework and written hw.
Tests are entirely multiple choice. It may sound good at first, but you can spend 10 minutes doing all the work for one problem, get a wrong answer and get 0/5 points with no partial credit for anything.
His tests are very difficult and all multiple choice. His jokes during class are very distracting and it is hard to focus on the material. He has most of his notes prewritten so it is hard to keep up in class. He will also not throw out or replace a test score. Great person, not a great instructor. Prepare to teach yourself the material.
The pace of the class is ideal for anyone whose pre-calculus skills were rusty (like mine were). Dave reviews key skills from previous years before moving on to the calculus. The tests are curved to accommodate particularly difficult questions missed by most of the class. Dave always makes an effort to create a welcoming classroom environment.
Dave is very welcoming and a master of awful puns. His humor keeps the mood light and slows the pace of his lectures. Significant amount of time with the textbook/doing homework, challenging tests. Very helpful via email and wants you to succeed, but YOU have to make the effort. "Calculus is the best [aka worst] algebra class you will ever take."
My favorite math professor to date. The only people I would NOT recommend this professor to would be people who can't tolerate a corny (but good) sense of humor.
If you don't mind the corny jokes, You'll love the class. You can tell he loves what he does, and makes the class very enjoyable. Exams are more on concepts rather than remembering formulas and written HW is given WITH Online HW. So, if you understand the material, it will be an easy A. Definitely recommended.
Wing is literally the hardest working prof ever. He spent HOURS outside of class helping me. I basically had a private tutor. He will help you until you yourself are the one to give up. He freakin LOVES math. This isnt a job for him its a passion and if you dont pass his class its because you didnt accept the help!!
He made me likes math again. He is the best math teacher I ever had. His midterms are pretty easy, except the final. The class got tougher at the end of quarter.Do all the homeworks(Don't miss it), do the review from books and understand the concepts. His exam review problem is not quite useful for the text.
Dave is a really nice guy. The midterms are pretty easy, I got 92 out of 100. HOWEVER, the final was really hard, I barely passed the class because of the final, the final has 35% of the overall grade!
Dave is very funny and nice. Very easily approachable and easy to communicate with. He wants you to learn concepts rather than learn how to plug and chug. Don't study specific problems from MyMathLab. At the end of the term he said he doesn't like it and the problems are too long for exams. The final is extremely hard. The average was around 40%.
Excellent professor. If you attend lectures and take advantage of office hours, the class should be a cakewalk.
David is the prof that finally got me to understand some of the core concepts. He even thanked me after I sent him an email months later (at about 2am, thanks to certain ethanol combinations) thanking him for all his help. Genuinely nice guy, and he works tirelessly to help his students. I wish every professor was like him.
He will help you as much as you need for as long as you need it, at most hours of the day (via email). He is literally the most helpful person I've ever met, and he LOVES math and helping students. You have to work for the grade though, his tests arent easy. Study the group works and the quizzes, not just the practice test!!!
great professor
Awesome teacher, extremely helpful. Best math teacher at OSU in my opinion
Very helpful teacher. Goes slow in lecture -- really wants everyone to get it. Tests are mostly multiple choice and really straightforward.
Do not recommend for online. The tests all definition based, very little derivatives. The tests cover one whole chapter with over seven sections, he does not narrow the topics down, expect you to know everything. The review materials are not useful.
I usually have to work extra hard to get decent grades in math and I had no interest in taking calculus, even though I had to as a biology major. David made it interesting, was very helpful, and I actually learned something. He did a great job teaching it as an online class. Definitely recommend, especially if you're not a math lover.
The best math teacher I've had at OSU so far. I would recommend taking his class
Dave changed my life. He helped me go from someone who could barely do algebra, to doing full pchem derivations. He also helped me through MTH 254 although he was not my instructor. No one cares more about helping people learn math.
best teacher ever. Helps students a lot and his goal is to make students love math.
Dave is an excellent math professor. His quizzes are hard in recitation but he assigns enough homework to give you ample practice. He is pretty clear at explaining stuff and enjoys what he does. He will go out of his way to help you if you ask. I am taking him again for math 256 because he was fair, clear, and helpful.
Makes learning Calculus as easy as it can be for Calculus. More than willing to go out of his way to help. Semi at your own pace. Tests are a bulk of the grade. DO THE REVIEW PROBLEMS HE ASSIGNS AND THE CHAPTER/SECTION REVIEWS AND YOULL DO WELL ON THE TEST. One of the best math teachers I've had, but you still need to put in the time.
He assigned a lot of homework on MyMathLab which was a pain, but really familiarized me with the difficult concepts. If you can't visualize the calculus problems in this class, you probably will have a hard time. He's funny, nice, and always willing to take an extra step to make you understand the concepts.
Dave is the best math professor at Oregon State. His commitment to making sure everyone knows the topics and trying to crack the best puns in existence made him an absolute delight to have as a professor 10/10
I found Mr. Wing to be exceptionally responsive and helpful any time I asked. Calculus did not come easy for me, so this class had a very high time investment. Although, that is truly the best thing you can do for yourself when struggling, put in the time.
About the best way you can take calculus, I highly recommend him. It's a lot of work but he gives a lot of chances to get a good grade. Quick to respond even on weekends. Tests problems do not get super complicated which was nice. Mostly just the basics from each chapter.
I had Dave for 252, 254, and 256. He's extremely welcoming and clear in class, loves to help out in office hours, and truly wants to help you succeed. His 256 tests are mostly straight-forward, aren't bad as long as you got through the online HW and his review sheets (which, admittedly, aren't easy).
Got my first B in college with this guy after a full year of all As and one A minus. Despite having test averages around 60%, THIS GUY DOES NOT CURVE. No idea why. I got nearly the same exam scores as my friend who took 256 with a different prof. He got a solid A. I got a B+. David Wing destroyed my GPA. Still pissed while writing this.
Dave Wing is HILARIOUS. Amazing. He cares so much. He wrote a great final, although the midterms were slightly too easy with B averages. I left this class feeling like I learned a lot. He's really fun to learn from, and he makes the daily grind of classes not so bad. Take him for just about any math class if you can.
Dave Wing is a fantastic teacher with a clear passion for math. His lectures are well planned out with hand written outlines provided online before class. He guides you through the material slowly, making sure to stop if somebody is confused. He's a funny guy with an enjoyable attitude. His class made me understand calculus better than any other.
Kind; but WORST. INSTRUCTION. EVER. Took more than a month to provide any feedback on assignments - e.g., nothing for the last 4 weeks of the term before the final exam. It cost extra to enroll in the course online, and he only posted lectures on about half the material we were supposed to cover. Those lectures were never more than 10 minutes long.
David Wing was a great professor. His exams were fair and his expectations were made very clear. His class had online homework, recitation packets, and recitation quizzes as the weekly work and would drop the lowest score from each category. He was really organized and would post his lecture notes every day. He also loves making jokes in class.
Dave is the absolute best professor I've had for math at OSU. He posts notes online before and after classes so you don't miss valuable added on material. His jokes are frequent and cheesy, but he honestly cares about all his students and you can feel from his personality that he's there to help. He teaches well with many examples and walkthroughs.
This is a review for online differential equations (I have also had him in person and he was amazing). The course had quite a bit of work. A usual week would look like: 15-30 online homework problems, 1 written homework (2-3 problems), readings, and a quiz. The work was very manageable if you stayed on top of things. Overall, great class.
This class was taken over Zoom (same syllabus as in-class) I had about 4 mini exams and they were all pretty straightforward. If you practice the in-class activities & written HW you will get an A. He also does preclass videos you watch before coming to lecture, they are about 10mins long. They help a lot!!
I took the class during covid-19. he is a nice guy but he failed to accommodate the students during this difficult time we did flipped-classroom. you come to the class and do problems with your group and that is it. what a waste of time and money
MTH255 is a very tough class but I'm glad I took it with Dave. He cracks a lot of very corny jokes, but it keeps lectures light. Exams are tough, but that's just a symptom of the class and he allows test corrections for up to half credit back. The exams and weekly quizzes will make or break your grade in this class. Study for each quiz!
Dave is the best math prof I've had at OSU! He is funny and genuinely cares about his students and is always willing to take time to make sure that everyone in lecture understands the material. He posts his notes online both before and after class so attendance is technically not mandatory.
Great guy, not the best linear algebra 2 professor. Left a lot of things up in the air to be learned.
Took a class remotely. All relevant class materials are things he has hand-written, but his handwriting is terrible, which makes it very difficult to follow along in class. Homework problems are graded inconsistently, and nothing can guarantee a good grade.
I've never felt so lost in a class and have the professor move on while the majority of the class is clueless. Don't take him for MTH342, he isn't able to teach you proofs which is a major component of this class. He's a very awkward teacher and frequently loses track, and it's easy to get distracted and lose your attention in his tangents.
Dave is an excellent, inspiring teacher who seems to love his job and always brings a positive attitude to class with a bottomless pit of puns and jokes. He is always ready to spend extra time helping you learn a concept never fails to put me in a better mood with his unconditional cheer.
He doesn't do the best at teaching the material. He really skims over the material and makes you rely more on reading the book.
MTH 342 itself is not an easy class, and with the current situation we're in with remote learning, trying to teach a class like this isn't easy. The lectures can go over your head, and the textbook didn't make it any easier. But, David's office hours saved my grade for this term, as he was so easy to talk to and really cared when working with you.
Dave makes Linear Algebra come alive and he gives very fun problem sets. The problem sets are hard but if you spend the time you learn a lot. This was one of my favourite mathematics classes I have taken thus far.
MTH 342 was a relatively challenging class, but Dave made it really enjoyable. He has a lot of passion for math, and he's also super nice and funny. Other than his notes being a little messy, I genuinely enjoyed taking this class and would highly recommend Dave as a professor.
I had prof Wing for the online MTH 256 course, he doesn't host lectures and posts a lot of monotone talking along with pretty sloppy work behind it. Khan Academy videos are the main instruction he uses, over his own. Taking this prof won't ruin your gpa - It's easy to turn in the online stuff and skate through tests, but I gained nothing from Wing,
Understanding, nice, relatively lenient given adequate reason & communication, funny little jokes and math puns in lecture notes, the online homework platform is free however does not have "similar problem worked out" examples to study so make sure you start homework early in the week so you have time to ask for help. No trick questions on tests.
Prof. Wing set up the class in an organized manner. The learning content (online class) is there but I found I had to search for additional outside content to truly understand the material. I recommend Prof. Leonard on youtube for an excellent outside resource. Grading was clear but a little harsh at times. A doable class if you put in the work.
Prof Wing was really there to help you learn the material, his office hours sessions got me through this class! Disclaimer: you will be inundated with silly puns and wordplay.
He's really passionate about math and you can feel that draw into students. I know I feel way more interested in math after this class. This class was very hard for me because I didn't pick up on the way he explained proofs, and this class is mostly proofs. I think the objectives, like given vs. goal mindset could have been more clearly explained.
Dave is an awesome professor who cares a lot about the subject material and getting students interested in math. Lots of puns. MTH 342 is a fairly abstract and proof based class -make sure you're comfortable with proofs- but the lead up from vector spaces to matrices & transformations and finally inner products is superb. S-tier class, S-tier prof.
(MTH 264H, not 254) Fantastic professor! Very funny and cares a lot about students, he was willing to push back deadlines if we had schedule conflicts. His lectures were engaging and left space for discussion. Workload is pretty high (6+ hours each week) but overall manageable, especially if you ask questions about it early on.
Dave is great. He is very knowledgable and will go out of his way to help students. Lectures are limited for the online class I am taking. Mostly reading and small supplemental videos. I have had to use a lot of outside resources to understand the subject matter. But when I have a question, Dave always responds quickly. HW load not too bad either.
Actually cares about his students and works very quick to reply to emails and answers questions well. Good explanations. Very flexible about extenuating circumstances. Great professor!
Wing's class was very organized and he was very easily accessible outside of class. Be warned the notes are all typed up and sometimes the hw is hard to decipher with them alone so ask him questions! He is more than happy to help. Lots of extra credit sprinkled through the written HW and on the exams. Good drop policy but stay on top of HW!
David Wing is an awesome fella, but there are some courses that he should be a little more careful with. MTH 265 has got to be one of the worst math courses I have ever taken, especially since you take most of the concepts within Series Calculus and cram it into 5 weeks. Make sure you spend time reading the textbook, and use his office hours!
Professor Wing's MTH342 course was incredibly challenging, but his unwavering support and flexibility made all the difference. He went out of his way to help me to succeed against the odds. I'm deeply grateful for his dedication and highly recommend his courses for anyone seeking both a challenge and a supportive learning environment.
Dr. Wing is by far one of the best math instructors I have had at Oregon State. He is so passionate about math, and you can tell that he wants every one of his students to succeed (and not only that but understand!). His tests and homeworks are based on things done in class, and he posts filled-in lecture notes. Highly recommend!
Brutally tough and rude grader. I wouldn't want to a class with him again. EVER!
Professor Wing is one of my favorite professors I have had. He communicates his ideas very well, keeps lectures entertaining with his sense of humor, and is very clear with instructions. He also posts all of his lecture notes on canvas in case you miss class. Workload is very fair - not easy but not unreasonably difficult. Highly recommend.
MTH 343 is designed to be a difficult, time-consuming class, yet Dave teaches it outstandingly well. He takes feedback very well and frequently throughout the term, and exceptional with Canvas communications. Definitely get his help when you need it because he will help you get the right idea. I probably would not recommend other instructors.
Professor Wing's MTH342 is challenging but rewarding. While the lectures can be hit-or-miss, his support and enthusiasm make a real difference. Textbook and study tools like unstuck ai are key. Tough class, but worth the effort for math enthusiasts.
Wing is a great personality which makes a difficult class more engaging. He was very nice and easy to work with regarding deadlines, test material, etc. The class is very abstract and proof-based plus he pre-writes his notes before class, so he moves quite quickly, which can be challenging. Weekly HW's are pretty tough, tests are fair difficulty.
