His Chem 01 and 112 classes are like night and day. He's organized and clear in chem 01. Take Dr. McHugh at the Norfolk TCC for Chem 112.
very unorganized, very fast paced. the only good thing i have to say is that He curves the grades on his tests. I got a 64 last test and it ended up as a B. i guess its the only way i will pass!
I DROPPED THE CLASS!!!!! He is obviously a very smart man, and knows his stuff. However, he doesn't teach it very well. Over half the class dropped him. Nice guy, but not so good at teaching the material...
I've been taking courses for 3 years...I took him in my first year and still remember how God awful he was...if you want to learn without spending hundreds of dollars re-taking classes...then don't take him
He is a very intelligent man. The class moves quickly but there is a lot to cover. The tests & quizzes are quite hard but I expect that from college level chemistry. I have never found him to be disorganized for lab or lecture and he is helpful if you have questions outside of class.
I took his Health Science Chemistry 1 lecture and lab. The class was very fast-paced and I put in a lot of study time for it. Mr. Winters was very organized and provided many opportunities for extra credit. I hate chem and I thought he explained the material very well, especially Organic chem.
Nice but HARD-lectured too fast and we asked him to slow down and he did!. He has office hrs and GLADLY helps you. He offers lots xtra credit. Great in lab! HARD in lecture though. I know now that since I passed this class, I can pass any class!!!! This class was the hardest class I've taken!!!
He is such a nice old guy, and always willing to help. took lab with him and got a B, but failed lecture(Don't take Grant). He is very helpful, and tries very hard to explain such a hard subject. Gives partial credit, and gives 1 day allowance for due dates. CHM is the hardest class I've ever taken
Mr.Winter's has wonderful personality and a tremendous love and knowledge of chemistry. I enjoyed watching him teach but almost never understood what he taught with any confidence. He's in world of his own. Not a good communicator.
He is a really great instructor. He explains things clearly and easy to follow. Offers a lot of bonus pts that you do before the test to be added to it.Had him for lab and lecture. definately would recommend.(dont get Jenkins)
I dropped the class half way through..he does not explain material well. I had and A in lab and gave up on lecture!
Excellent chemistry professor. If you want to learn, take his class.
Excellent teacher! Explains things well...a little fast-paced. His tests are very difficult, but he gives you an example final exam in the beginning of the semester. Expect to put a lot of work into this class if you want to pass...but a plus HE CURVES!!! He also gives a lot of extra credit to boost your grade. Trust me, you'll need it!!!
Very nice, well dressed man. He really loves Chem but does not explain things well at all. Nothing he taught made any sense. Maybe it was just me?? Very hard class. Had to drop it.
Good teacher, very clear if you take copious notes and study you will pass. I like that he grades on a curve.
great at explaining a subject that can be very hard to understand. he broke it down very nicely. very helpful and soo nice. out of class is study is so important!!! its a difficult class.
Not too hard. Definately not easy. The book is not necessary. Must do owl assignments. Thsi guy grades off major curves. The class average is like a 50, but that is a C for this guy. Only problem is not enough time to actually complete tests. Test problems are very hard and 50 minutes is not enough time to finish. however, there will be a big curve
Pleasant, helpful & very knowledgeable. Explains course & answers questions. Take his lab too. Provides you with a practice final at the beginning of semester. Gives you the option to have group exercises go toward your tests. Offers bonuses to help bring up your grade. Tests are hard, but if you study & do Owl, you will get that A!!!
Hard class. Not recommended to people unless you have really brushed up on your CHM. Test are ridiculous. He goes beyond the difficulty of the book. Must stay ahead of him or else he will leave you in the dust. Gives a cumualtiev final. If you are ok in CHM, take him because of his curves. A 55 is like a C.
i had him for lab and he was very helpful and the stuff i didnt understand in lec he would tell me to come in and he would help me. he doesnt grade lab on a curve. if u get stuck on a lab juss ask him and he will help you. he is a really nice guy and he is very helpful. but his lab final is ridiculously hrd but he grads that with a curve... i think
Okay this class was crazy hard.i have never stressed over a class in my life! I have great grades and almost fail this class. he is very confusing and his study packets do not go with his test.he most def goes over every word in the book plus other books...his name is in the Health chem book. he is to smart to teach student. Can't break things down
wow. my entire semester went to crap because of this guy. he was a horrible teacher. he knows and understand wayy too much to be a professor at TCC. but he's very very nice so it's hard getting in arguments with him over grades. I would NOT recommend him to ANYONE!
You will learn a lot, I mean, you have to, otherwise, you will end up with failing. He is smart and ready to help you if you ask. Just for the info, my class had only one A and few Bs. I had B really closed to an A, although I did almost perfect on tests in my regular CHM111 class.
He took over the class from another instructor, he explains the material in a way you can understand. He gives handouts in every class and can be a bit confusing. Adding OWL homework, he is tough, you have to stay on top of the work in order to pass. Lab - he is great, explains everything and helps if you ask. I recommend him for lab, not lecture.
While being a nice guy, he's a HORRIBLE teacher. He taught everything (including mathematics) from a power point. I would not recommend taking him. Teaching yourself chemistry is not easy.
Very difficult class. So are his exams! About 200 mandatory OWL quest per section, research papers, pre-lab, post lab quest...Nice guy though. But his students end up knowing a lot more chem than students from other classes.
Mr. Winters is a nice professor, but he really kicked my butt this semester with homework. I had him for lab only and I spent more hours on the prelab questions, lap report, and post lab questions than the lecture and my other class combined. I just took his final exam last night and was nothing like the review. If possible, take another lab prof.
Lab- I dont suggest to take him for lecture because he is extremely hard. I do suggest you take him for Lab 111 or 112. If your a chemistry major than you need to take him. He's the only teacher that makes you write lab reports but its to your own benefit. He prepares you to do well on the Lab Final.
Do not take this class unless you like to teach yourself. EVERYTHING is taught straight off of powerpoint and NOTHING is explained unless asked. Even then, he still doesn't explain it thouroughly. However, he is a very nice old man. But personality doesn't teach you Chemistry.
With Mr.Winters, I felt like I could have taken chemistry online, and gone in once in a while to ask for help. Reads Lectures straight from power points. Gives lots of extra credit, but the extra credit is no cake. Would recommend him, but expect to work very hard for your A. Very good one on one.
I go to a University in Virginia and took this class over the summer so I could focus on it since I was never good in chemistry. If you use the OWL system he sets up, it is so easy to learn all the material. I got an A for the final grade. Just be patient with yourself, it's not Winters, it's chem 121. DO NOT BE AFRAID, THIS GUY ISNT BAD AT ALL.
its chemistry..its going to be hard no matter who you take. but winters is 50/50. cares about you succeeding and what not but teaches the material as though its a piece of cake and that everyone is on the same level as him. when he goes over an equation with you it just goes right over your head alot of the time. dont miss clas and really study
powerpoints are taken from the company that prints the books, uses tests that comes from the compnay that makes the books. so alot of the time what is on the test you havent learned yet. very fustrating. you really have to have a lot of extra time outside of class to teach yourself a lot of the material. and all the extra useless homework he gives
he is a great prof. he will leave you in the dust if you get behind so keep up on owl and reading. he gives ALOT of extra credit and helps whenever you need it. he is extremly smart and kind. but dont take his kindness for a weakness. you have to work hard to get a good grade.
okay..
I took Winters for 111 lab and loved his style, so I enrolled in his 112 lab and lec this semester! He's so helpful, if you need any clarification he's more than willing to make sure you understand. In both lab and lec, he grades pretty leniently. He even accepts labs a day late for full credit. In lec, he curves his test and is coherent. Take him!
this teacher is very nice and he has really detailed power points but he goes way to fast with them so if you depend on your notes then definitly do not take him
Nice man.Loves Chem.Does not transfer love to the students.Better for lab than lecture. To pass:do extra credit,do all owls and focus on tests and quizzes. If you have a time crunch, avoid BS worksheets. He grades on a crazy curve so hope your class is filled with chemtards. If you are disorganized, avoid this man. too many due dates to keep track of.
he is the type of teacher that teaches the class thinking everyone already knows chemistry, so if you havent had chemistry i do not recommend. also if you do not learning thorough powerpoint he is not the teacher for you.
I completely loathe this man. My rating may a bit bias because of my previous statement but i took college level chemistry in high school and understood it. He uses powerpoint but doesnt know how to use it correctly and plays bluegrass music, which to me have no relevance. Not satisfied at all with his teaching methods.
The guy is actually really inteligent however does NOT know how to express it (ie teach you). You cant let him fall behind either. If he does he still expects you to know all the material even if it is not covered in class. Had 5 assignments, 1 test and 2 quizes in the month of OCT. Had 7 assignments, 2 tests, 1 quiz AND the final in the first 10 d
Awesome professor! Here is the deal, on the first day of class he tells you CHM 111 is a difficult class, and if you are a Nursing major or not ready for this course, there are other classes. If you are planning on being an engineering or science major from a 4 year school and YOU ARE WILLING TO DO THE WORK, this is the class for you. Awesome prof!
I took CHEM 111 and 112 this summer and the amount of work you put into the class will reflect your grade. Do all of OWL HW its a big part of the final grade. Also do as much extra credit work as possible inside the class and on owl these points saved me on my really low test scores. He gives you many chances for extra credit take advantage of them
HIghly intelligent, but I really think teaching is not his strong point. He has laughed at me for asking valid questions, so as not to admit he may have not covered the subject aequately. Also when there is a due date discrepency between him and a student, he brings it to the whole class putting the student on the spot.
Chemistry is difficult, and Winters definitely didn't make it easier. He fell behind schedule; the end of the semester was a nightmare. I worked ceaselessly and barely passed his class. The hardest material was as clear as mud, and his Powerpoint was awful. The amount of hw kills your other classes. Take someone else who teaches more than 2x a wk.
Boring, hard to understand, monotone. I drew throughout entire semester instead of listening. OWL and the book are your only allies here, use them. Take ALL the extra credit you can get, you'll need it. Tests are hard, asks questions that don't seem relevant.
Quite possibly the worst "teacher" I have ever had. He simply reads the power points which are posted online, but also takes attendance every class so you have to show up anyway. His approach seems more geared towards a higher level chemistry, not a 100 level course. He will show you things once and expect you to know them. I would not recommend
Only had him for lab. He is very clear and concise and very willing to help answer questions. Lab reports get very time consuming, and even though I had A's on all of my labwork and assignments, I got a B in lab because the final was hard and worth too many points. Luckily with Lec I got an A overall. Pretty labor intensive for just a 1 credit lab.
Not an easy class. He was on a different schedule than my lab class, so that was rough. I was usually lost as to what was due, what was extra credit, and what was just "for fun." I did a lot of self teaching and emailing to another chem professor the semester I took Winters.
Just finishing up a 5-week summer course; he's a great professor. Very smart and willing to help. If you don't have the math skills, or aren't prepared to work hard, then you'll fail. If you are willing to work and actually learn, it'll be tough, but you'll know chemistry when you're done. Glad I took him because it'll make O-chem easier!
Terrible. Worst chemistry class ever. Do not take him.
Do not listen to wimperings of those that couldn't hack these courses. He is a good and smart professor that doesn't put up with sophomoric and juvenile attitudes. Also, if you aren't prepared to work hard, don't take a 5-week science class. If it wasn't hard, it would be a waste. This guy deserves credit.
Just finished a 5-week summer session of Chem 112 with prof winters. He's a good dude, good professor, and stand-up guy. If you think taking any science w/ lab in 5 weeks SHOULD be easy, then you are misguided in the first place. You know chemistry if you get a good grade in his class. I got an A, I tried hard, and I feel set up for success.
Wow what a tough guy. He walk s and starts lecturing mostly from his hand written notes, which are difficult to read. If you do not have a recent class or back ground in Chem you will be extremely challenged in this class. He understands Chem very well and expects you to have some knowledge too.
Class is fairly typical for a college-level chemistry course, except for the tests. His tests are very involved and difficult to complete in the 50-minute class session. Since there are only a handful during the course and he doesn't drop grades, it is very easy to kill an average or even fail the class from one bad test score.
I took him for 111 and it was brutal. In 121 he was more clear. The class is a bit easier but he also taught it better and the class was smaller. Chemistry is hard. It doesn't matter what teacher you have. Use the tutors.
I took him for lab. He is extremely helpful because he has to be. He requires more of labs than any other professor. He grades very hard and requires you to do a formal lab report which might wreck your life. Don't take him if you don't have the time to do a lot of work. Apart from that though, he is a very nice guy.
He is a great guy and will teach you. He gives you a lot of handouts. But I recommend to stay ahead of his lecture for his quizzes. He wont just teach out of the book. He makes you work for that A.
I had him for lab and he was ok but he grades with no mercy. I could never find out what it is that he actually wanted. there isnt alot of work execpt for the formal lab reports and there are only 2 of thoes
He knows what he is talking about and made me remain attentive the entire class period. You must put a lot of effort into his class and study his hand-outs and do all your owl and you will get an A :)
Good teacher! He gives you everything you need to pass his class. If you're not going to work for it, you will definitely make it harder on yourself. Very helpful. :)
Mr. Winters is a WONDERFUL man, but his class was ridiculously hard. The endless hours of homework made it extremely difficult to stay up with my other classes. He is more than happy to help during office hours, and has test review sessions (Go to them!), but I feel he just teaches above a CHM 111 level. I never worked so hard for a B in my life.
He is a very nice man, but be prepared to have more homework in this class than all other classes combined.
Goodness, what a class. It was ridiculously challenging for me. Personally, I feel like he jumped to and fro between topics which confused me to no end. He was a nice guy; however, if you don't word your questions a certain/specific way, you'll never get an informative answer.
Horrible DO NOT TAKE HIM! Nice guy but far too difficult. TONS of homework that does not translate to the tests. Tests are very short (25 questions for a 3 chapter test) so the margin for error is small. My class avg for the first test was a 67 and 52 for the second test, but he refuses to do anything to help. Tests not what you're told to study.
Ridiculously hard. What is life right now.
When you pass back a test the average grade was a 53 and the highest was a 79 you know there's a problem. He refuses to curve tests. I think he doesn't mind failures. He said on day 1 that the average grade was a C and I figured I'd still get an A but I was wrong. TCC has no good chemistry teachers, so it's a loose:loose situation.
This has been the hardest class I have taken and this is my fourth science class with lab in the past year so I'm not just jumping to conclusions by saying this. No amount of studying really prepares you for what to expect on the tests and OWL is ridiculous and does not translate to the tests. Overall, take the class in Norfolk if possible.
Insanely difficult. The online homework has nothing to do with the tests. The workload is very intense, leaving one with little time to study or do work for other classes. The tests are short and if you don't show ALL of your work, he will deduct points and will not curve. Obversely, he is a very nice person. Pass or die trying.
Hands down the worst instructor I've ever had. Test averages were 63, 52, 52, and 48. He refuses to curve tests even though it is clearly something wrong with his teaching style. You will not get an A in this class. You will barely get a C if you're lucky. He is unhelpful and sometimes condescending. Head to the Norfolk campus for this course.
I failed his class, but when I retook it with a different professor I got an A. There is something wrong with that if you ask me. Oh, and he makes you learn graduate level information. That might be why I and the majority of the class failed, since this was a freshman level class.
I found professor Winters to be a good teacher. He is tough and a bit monotone in his teaching, but fair in grading and will answer any question you ask. Owl is very important not only for the grade but for learning. Do the work, attend the class, and use all of OWL, including the optional part and you will succeed in here.
Doesn't give titles or topics when he begins a lesson. He just starts talking and talks about random things. They never seem related and are never related to anything from the previous class. His voice is not very exciting and can put you to sleep even if you come in wide awake. I don't recommend him if you know nothing about chemistry.
Very monotone voice, however information learned is quite clear he moved fast on important things and slow on the unimportant. but offers tons of extra credit, study sessions and will basically give you the answer if you go to office hours.
Chemistry concepts are difficult and the professor moves quickly in lecture to get everything covered. I taught myself a lot on my own time, but the labs were helpful and he goes above and beyond to offer extra credit and study sessions before all tests. He is very knowledgeable, but is sometimes soft-spoken. Pay attention and don't fall behind.
Absolute worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are just power points and he goes so fast you literally cannot even write down what is on the powerpoint. Try to study from the book but his tests are nothing like it. He's great for lab, but take someone else for lecture.
Dropped his class after the first week. I could nto even write down what he was writing on the board before he erased it. Do not take this prof. very hard
Extremely picky at grading. Will dock points for anything but perfection. Honestly the only professor that has given me any trouble at this campus. I would suggest not taking his class.
The WORST professor I have ever had. I've never had a problem with chemistry until this class. He makes all of the work 10 times harder than it needs to be. I'm not a lazy student and work my butt off to get good grades and cannot manage to do well in this course. DO NOT TAKE DAVID WINTERS.
You'll need an access code for online HW. We never used the book. His lectures are in PPT. He gives difficult and tricky tests. He gives a lot of extra credit like research papers, problem solving, video analysis, etc. He does not speak clearly so as much as possible, sit in front of the class. Overall, he's kind and smart!
He was tough. He is a very smart professor, but sometimes hard to follow his teaching.
It's evident he knows what he's talking about, but his style of teaching doesn't work for me. Homework is online and needs an access code. The work he assigns can be confusing and the tests are difficult. I've never been a student who struggled to maintain an A, but in his class I constantly feel lost. Wouldn't recommend him :(
His tests are merciless, and he gives critical homework without giving an accurate description of when it's due. Also, his blackboard is cluttered, horribly unorganized and overall a pain to deal with. If you commit to this class, sit in the front and take notes. Don't miss a day either.
Tests are extremely difficult. Winters knows what he is talking about but will rush through the material, if you ask questions he will answer them though. His classes can be a little confusing and it is very easy to fall behind in the class. Beware to barely pass the tests but he does do his overall grade in the class on a curve. Hard, hard, hard.
Professor Winters is not the best professor I've had. I took a 5 week Chem 111 class with him and I had to beg him to help me. Tests are extremely hard. He gave us take home tests, but they did not represent the level of difficulty on the test. He doesn't take a lot of time to go over material, but he gives A LOT of extra credit.
I do not even know where to start with this guy. Lectures are long and daunting. Those formulas he is writing on the board? Do not expect him to explain a single thing about those. He blows through the formulas. Do not take this guys class. Most of my classmates did lab work and other homework while in lecture since there was nothing to gain.
The worksheets (which are proliferous) either have no title or if there is one it still doesn't match the online list of worksheets and when to hand them in and how much they're worth. One little thing wrong nearly 0 credit. Skips around in the book all the time. Assigns ALL the OWL online HW and it's out of order and all due at the end.
Its obvious that he knows what he is talking about, however, his lectures feel like they take forever. He grades really tough and if you do not know how to do what is assigned, ask for help! It is important to stay ahead in the class and do all of the homework. Its going to be tough to get an A, but it can be done
Mr. Winters is an excellent professor. He makes you earn your grade. A lot of my NSU classmates go here to take him because our department stinks. If you want to be a real scientist, take him. Online homework gives you solutions and he hands out so much extra credit! Don't do homework last minute and ask questions when you have them.
This class is crazy tough. Chemistry is difficult enough, but this professor just blows through the material and expects you to understand it with no problem. It's hard to determine when most assignments are due and the tests are horrifying. He does give a bunch of extra credit, but only for a few points. Pay attention to the homework on OWL too.
Prof Winters is a HARD professor but he is also very helpful and he gives out tons of extra credit. You will know your stuff when you're done with him, if you are a STEM major and you actually need CHM later in your career this is the class to take because no stone is left unturned. Do all extra credit, pay attention to OWL, use office hours!!
Dynamic classes, not only the lecture, funny examples sometimes, compared to other interesting and related topics
Bad: Extremely difficult; unnecessarily complicated. If you struggle with this subject go elsewhere. Professor Winters is behind the times. I taught myself everything with little to absolutely no help from the professor. Good: Extra credit; curved exam scores. I never scored less that 102% on an exam. You will know understand Chem111 at the end.
If you have the option to take 121 at a different campus or with a different professor, please do. The class average on exams was 60-70. As long as you get an A/B in the lab portion and do OWL, even with 60s on the exams you'll leave with a B/C . Don't expect to really learn anything from this class. Exams don't follow what we learn in lecture!
DO NOT TAKE!! Please take ANYONE else, especially if you care about your GPA. This was the last class I had to take before applying to Nursing school and I was a wreck the entire time, as was the rest of the class. He was very confusing with how he taught, the grading system and feedback. Tests didn't follow what he "taught". He needs to retire.
Run far away. This professor needed to retire a long time ago. He doesn't know how to teach AT ALL. His tests do not follow the practice exams or what he tries to teach in lecture. He doesn't explain anything in a way that you can understand or learn from. The idea of extra credit was appreciated but impossible. For your sanity, take someone else.
Prof. Winter's gets a bad reputation because he isn't all that personable. His tests are reflective of his practice tests and there's LOADS of partial credit on them. TONS of extra credit you just have to do it. Do the online assignments and you get an easy 100 for that part. Anyone who does poorly just doesn't get it or is lazy.
Mr. Winters is not my favorite professor. I have him for lab and he doesn't really explain the experiments all too well and standing through his explanation can prove to be quite tough. However, he does give extra credit on a few things, which could help. Overall, I would not take him again.
Terrible. Terrible. Professor. I would never take him again. I've taken chemistry before and did fine. But it's a completely different story with him. His lectures don't make sense and you pretty much have to teach yourself chemistry if you want to pass. Luckily I had a lab professor who helped me understand everything. Do not take!!!!
Hard class. Never took chemistry in H.S. so it was harder. Lectures boring and expected you to know what was being covered before you got to class. Tough grader but at the same time the gave points to everyone if a question was missed for the majority of the class. Attended tutoring sessions at least 3 where i learned everything. DO EXTRA CREDIT!
If you have any other option, please, for your own sake, take someone else. Someone tried to give me a warning and I thought he couldn't be THAT bad. Well, lectures are always super sporadic and confusing, he does not do a good job explaining concepts or principles. Lab is a nightmare with him. I'm only a month in to the semester and its awful
Took my first test today and overall it wasn't so bad. The test is exactly like that practice bonus test. He gives lots of extra credit. Does test reviews before the test date. Super nice teacher. His teaching style is definitely meant for a university because he is really smart. Don't miss class or you'll fall behind.
So bad. I feel bad because he seems like a nice and caring guy, but his lectures are just awful. I taught myself the entire semester. It just doesn't seem as if he knows how to teach the information very well. Although, if you have to take him, definitely do ALL of the extra credit, because it's enough to bring you up an entire letter grade
Professor Winters knows the material but his teaching structure is not feasible. It is entirely too much coursework and he is not very good at delivering material to students in a manner that they can understand. I have to retake this course. :(
Mr. Winters was very nice and very knowledgeable, but I was a straight A student before taking his class. I took chem in high school and did well, but this class was on a whole other level. It was unnecessarily difficult and most of the time his lectures were impossible to understand. I would not recommend at all.
Well, you will survive if you must take his course. He is super nice and knows chem exceptionally well. However, his teaching a is rough-go. Class average once was in the 40's. Luckily he curves. Just make sure to use his office hours to get explanations & try & do as much extra credit as possible (it's pretty tough for a few points, but pays off.)
Not only is he a harsh grader, he cannot teach. He makes the material more harder than it is. Ive taken this course before at a actual university and the difficulty was nowhere near. take this rating seriously. He is the type of professor that discourages students to major in science because they feel too dumb in reality its him.
This prof. has a hard time with doing the problems on the board without explaining. By the time I finished writing the problem on the board and he would be already done with the problem. This class is a last resort.
Awful professor, tests are extremely difficult and he barely explains what hes lecturing about. Now i have to retake this class even though i passed the lab with an A. If you have another option for a professor i would take it immediately instead of waiting like i did and being stuck with him.
You will teach yourself in this class. He is a smart man but not so good at teaching. Lots of handouts each class. Bonus work will help you out a bit. Do the bonus tests. Don't think just bc you get a practice test that it will resemble your actual test. OWL assignments are time consuming and annoying. I was a straight A student before this class.
AVOID AT ALL COST. Lectures are heavy with information, all textbooks and lab manuals are online and you have to purchase. Test are very hard. Mainly 25 questions and heavy information. Had to rely on YouTube and was struggling with my study group. 3/4 of the class dropped. Avoid at all cost. For my nursing peers take CHM 111 instead.
It was more difficult than it should have been. The majority of the class dropped the lecture and lab. The textbook did not supplement the online homework. His tests come from another source, so they tend to not cover the same material. He thinks it is normal to have a class averge in the 60s. RUN. SAVE YOURSELF. I had a 3.8 GPA before taking him.
He talked so quietly I didn't know what he was saying most of the time. I had him for lab, he would demonstrate the lab assignment so fast and quietly I had to figure out the assignment on my own 95% of the time. VERY PICKY GRADER. Gives extra credit but it hardly helped. If you miss one lab you might as well have failed already. DO NOT RECOMMEND
Nice guy, but he's really quiet. I just graduated high school, and I thought that I was struggling in high school, but boy am I struggling now.
I had this professor for lab and I really taught myself most of the stuff. Everyone in my class had no clue what was going on the entire time, he doesn't explain things well and gives A TON of papers for no reason.
He was nice
Ill admit hes not the greatest and hes a really hard professor. He seems to pick favorites too. He teaches a lot as of its review instead of learning for the first time, so if you already kind of understand chemistry and want some refreshing he is a good way to go, but honestly the class is really hard and hes a really tough teacher.
please... i am telling you now... do NOT choose winters for this class. It's my first semester of college and i have literally been teaching myself EVERYTHING from the textbook. i mean he's a nice guy and all... the kind of guy you'd wanna sit by a camp fire with and tell ghost stories... but he is not good at teaching whatsoever.
Winter is cold and cool, Winters is not. He gives a problem, and then makes 4 variants of it. He talks in a quiet voice. His tests are not anything like he taught. He gives extra credit, but it does nothing too boost your grade. His test average before extra credit was 50, and with extra credit the average is in the 60s. He gives tons of handouts!!
He's quiet so sit upfront. Do all the homework on time and you will be very well prepared. He offers tons of bonus work so do as much as possible to support your grade. As questions as much as needed. I would moreso recommend this class to people who are already decent and have a basic understanding of chemistry because his material goes quickly.
I did not take Chemistry in high school. This professor teaches like you already know the basics and skips over everything! Nothing he taught was on the test. If you asked him to explain he barely answered your question. Worse class I ever took! Dont take this professor if you want to pass this class.
Professor Winters is very knowledgable and kind. Take advantage of office hours. He is willing to help you. Take advantage of extra credits as they can help boost tests grades. Chemistry is a hard subject but his class taught me to be resourceful. If you do not want to put in the work, do not take him. But if you do, you will learn a lot from him.
His lectures are very hard to follow as he would skip around often and would do pratice problems and not explain his steps well but still expect you to do it the same way on the test. The test are hard and I usually ran out of time and couldn't finish. Homework is not too hard and it's worth a big percentage of your grade. Lots of extra credit...
This was the worst chemistry class I have been in. I only took this class for my major. The class is very unorganized and highly confusing. He does not respond to emails nor concerns. He just throws work at you every second of the day and we have not thoroughly learned anything. Just teach yourself!
I'm taking his class in person but shifted to online because of the pandemic. He is NOT considerate about the work loads, instead he made it three times harder, TWO quizzes due ON THE SAME DAY, and scheduled the tests NOT on our class days. If you want to be successful, do NOT take him. I just had no choice that's why I took his class. Very awful.
I had him for lab. He is extremely nice and cares about his students, the ones who put in effort. He gets a bad rep because it's a difficult class and he is old school in his technique. I did have trouble understanding what he was asking for sometimes but he's honestly not the worst professor in the world. Don't let the reviews scare you.
If you can avoid taking him for Chemistry. He is all over the place with how he grades. He does provide study guides and does do review sessions prior to test day. (very helpful!) He is soft spoken so sit in the front of his class. Gives weekly homework that is long but is a grade booster.
Not a good teacher. He is uninspiring. He is boring. He is old, quiet, assumes we know a lot, makes chem hard. He gives extra credit; DO IT; worth your time. He wears 6 suits (minus the jacket). Class got so bad I heard students crying. TIP- take quality lecture notes), do WebAssign assigned, and cry a lot! Our class avg- 58% at end of semester.
Mr. Winters made my chemistry experience great! He lets you take pictures of the lab board for homework, and sends out reminders for all assignments. He met with me before class at 9 to make sure I was okay, and to remind me of last minute homework. I had a panic attack in front of my class and he helped me calm down and let me go home. Helpful!
Hear me out, his online lectures are... well they arent the best. He makes you do this Aleks program which honestly made me hate the class, extremely tedious and overwhelming, VERY TIME CONSUMING. His labs were better than the actual lecture, a lot of work, recommend a different LEC professor. For LEC he lets you take tests & quizzes whenever.
The hardest class I have ever taken. I spent at least 8 hours a day studying. You teach yourself 90% of the material, there is so much hw, you don't even have time to teach yourself everything. Class averages of tests were often 60 and below. He barely helps. He does offer extra credit, you'll need it to get anywhere close to a B/A. Don't take him.
This is my first time leaving a review on this website. In short, this class has made me lose my love for chemistry. Every single semester I had principals list, including in other science courses, and I have lost that due to this class. He is nonreliable, nonresponsive, and used expensive programs that took long times to complete.
Okay, he might not be the best, but I am glad I took him. IK 99% of us(incl me) didn't do well, but his class truly opened my eyes to what college/TCC is; taking darn good notes, some profs won't be good, how to be resourceful, how to self teach, cram, and take time to do Extra Credit. It will be hard, but his class is more than atoms & sig figs.
I could watch paint dry in his class. He is so dull. He gives extra credit (do it). Tests are really hard; class averages 50-60% every time, and acts like its nothing. I think I'll be a stripper, rather than an doctor. If you have to take him, just wait for another prof. Spend at least 3 hrs daily studying outside lecture. PS. Chegg helps to extent
Do NOT take chemistry with this professor. Everyone is failing and he doesn't bat an eye. He encourages students to do extra credit work to up their grade. In lectures, he mumbles and it's hard to understand him with his mask on. He always ask if there's any questions. when asked he often replies with short answers or can't understand the question
Professor Winters is a teacher that expects everyone to learn at the same speed as him, which can be very difficult when you don't have a math-loving brain. In spite of this, he is a very kind teacher that gives an insane amount of extra credit opportunities. If you take his class, make sure to take notes and do the ALEKS and you will be golden!
For the first half of the semester, the homework that was assigned via online services didn't even match with what we were learning. Half the classed dropped out. I'll leave it there.
Difficult teaching style, does not adequately explain intermediary steps to solving various chemistry problems. Respectfully, in my opinion, he would do well as a graduate studies teacher but perhaps not for students who need an introductory course on chemistry.
I would never take his class again. He doesn't give extra credit in lab. He grades extremely hard with rounding and sfs. He isn't helpful with understanding math or questions. I don't think he should be teaching in a community college. He has a horrible grading system where if you submit an assignment in the wrong folder online it's an automatic 0.
I would not recommend him. Very difficult teaching style, he grades very hard, not very helpful in understanding the lab questions. You barely can read his handwriting. The overall final exam average was 55. Save your stress and time. This is your sign to pick a different prof even tho its the only one that fits in your schedule.
Worst class ever! Very boring and doesn't teach effectively; I've had to learn most of the material on my own, which has been nearly impossible to handle with my other coursework. He doesn't explain the concepts behind what he's teaching, so I have no real understanding of the material. Class test avgs were consistently failing; pls don't take him!
7:35 AM lectures were terrible; fell asleep because he was that boring. Yes, early class, but still. Not a good lecturer, and tests/finals were hard as heck. Doesn't prepare you. You can do all the problems in the world, and still not pass. Gives XC, but that can't save your grade; maybe only by 3 points OVR. Lab is bland. 80% drop after Test 1.
Do all the assignments, aleks are a very important part of the grade. Pay really good attention on the lecture because it is a lot of material and he explains like you know the material. Do outside reading
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I wont go into everything that mad this class unbearable but just know if you take this class, I wish you the best of luck.
He's very well educated in Chemistry and that shows in his lectures. He often won't explain a lot of in between math steps which can be difficult when following lecture. Uses ALEKS for homework. Offers up to 20 points extra credit per test. Take if you have a good basic knowledge of chemistry already.
