Prof Wiseman is the best teacher that I've ever had. He makes learning Spanish easy because he honestly cares for the subject. If you have the opportunity to take any class form him, don't let it slip away!
I had him as a substitute for both 201 and 202 (he substituted for his wife). He is hilarious and his speaking is very easy to understand. He just seems like he would be very effective as a professor.
He is one of the best teachers I've had at BYU. He is so flexible and understanding. He really cares about his students and made me care about actually learning than my grade. He tries to adapt his assignments to your learning style. The readings and papers are still challenging, but interesting.
Professor Wiseman is a great professor, he's really dedicated to helping his students and truly tries to meet their needs. He offers individual help outside of class and responds quickly to emails. Classes are usually discussion style, so make sure to do the reading to comment in class.
100% would take again. He is super respectful and respected. He encourages you to learn by your style and offers opportunities for all students to pass and to excel. He's kind of silly sometimes but in a good way that is very endearing. He wants you to work hard but it's totally doable, and class is interesting. He is a great professor!
He looks mostly like a teenager, and he has the energy of one too! Really sweet guy who is willing to bend over backwards to help you succeed. You do need to be prepared to read--a lot, and there's a huge focus on class participation, please do! It makes the class so much more exciting.
By far the best teacher I have ever had!!! Very caring and is more interested in your learning that he is the grade. His straight-up honest about how you can improve and is flexible with how he teaches. FANTASTIC TEACHER
The class overall was not what I was expecting, but I guess you can't go into depth about Latin America in one semester. What we did cover was so applicable to issues today. Dr. Wiseman is seriously the most supportive professor I have ever had. He really does care about us as people and tries to apply the material to our lives.
Best Spanish class I've taken at BYU. Your grade is proportional to how much you work, and the whole class is centered on discussion and participation. Midterms and finals are all essays, so it's all based on what you learned and how you can communicate it. Dr. Wiseman will bend over backwards to help you with anything and he always makes class fun
Professor Wiseman is AMAZING!! He is so respectful of everyones opinion and class is very enjoyable. He doesnt give tests or quizzes, so be prepared to write a lot of essays and speak up in class to get participation points. This is honestly one of my favorite classes I have ever taken at BYU and he is by far one of my favorite professors.
Nice guy. Cares a lot. However, his class was one of my least favorite that I have taken at BYU. What should have been teaching on his part, was him calling on uneducated students to share what they learned from the readings. For the entire class period. I would have expected a more prepared and organized class from someone with his education.
There really isn't anything positive to say about this professor. Once you get past the subpar white guy Spanish accent, you have to try to sift through the confusing lectures. I often found that this professor contradicted the class readings, making me think he did not know what he was talking about. I expected more from such an educated man.
Professor Wiseman comes extremely prepared to class. Some of the poor comments that he received are utterly false. He is one of the best professors I've had. He's open to hearing new ideas and is never hostile, nor does he impose his own opinion as the only right answer.
This class was beyond boring. If you can get over the gringo talk, you might be able to make sense of the frustrating lectures. Stay away!
Prof Wiseman really cares about all his students and is always available for help outside of class. I didn't particularly enjoy the material from Span339, but he at least helped me to learn other concepts and especially to become more open minded and a better overall thinker about concepts. It isn't a tough class, but Prof Wiseman opens your eyes.
It is hard for me to say anything positive at all about this literature class and professor Wiseman. I just did not feel this professor knew what he was teaching. He seemed lost all the time and it drove most of the students crazy. I would discourage all student from taking classes with this guy. His bad Spanish doesnt help at all.
Professor Wiseman was one of the best professors I've had at BYU. He helped me enjoy learning. He always offered to meet one on one and he truly cared about each student's success. Such a nice guy, and the individual project we had taught me SO much. I would definitely recommend him to anyone!
I am a senior at BYU now. I have taken classes with tons of professors, and in my opinion, professor Wiseman is by far the worst. He does not seem organized, prepared, or very knowledgeable on the literature he teaches. He is also hard to understand when he speaks Spanish. It seems like he makes lots of grammar mistakes. Avoid his classes.
Professor Wiseman was great, the class is not hard at all there are just a lot of readings but they aren't too bad. He is very flexible and will work with you, he basically asked us if we wanted to have a final. I thought he was great.
Great professor! I loved his class. He really want you to do good. He has a vision for his students that goes beyond the classroom. I was in Spanish 339
Super nice, loves teaching, however I felt more spiritually uplifted than intellectually uplifted. Good if you need an easy class; you won't learn much about literature unless you take this class from someone else or go on to take the higher level literature classes. Despite what others have said, his accent is much more tolerable than some others.
Spiritually uplifting. He always connects the class material to the gospel. He has good Spanish, so not sure why there are so many haters below; ignore 'em. Only critique I have is sometimes the assignments given are vague and he gives little direction on what he's looking for. What you take out of this class is what you put into it.
Fabulous class. I recommend this professor to all my friends that take Spanish classes. This was class was more spiritual than my religion class and I learned a lot. I left every class with a mind full of ideas. Dr. Wiseman actually cares about all of his students actually learning about life, not just getting an A in Spanish literature.
Go to class. Pay attention. Participate. Do the readings and the assignments. This class is one of my favorites I've ever taken because of Profe! If your'e going to take 339, take it from David.
Professor Wiseman is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is caring and considerate; you can tell that he cares about each one of his students. If you ever have the chance to take a class from him, do it!!
Professor Wiseman is amazing; I haven't met a professor that strive to teach so closely to the BYU aims and mission. He's not afraid to change things up and to have a little fun. He understands the reality of college and his classes were so inspiring and felt like an escape. He wants to see that you try and care and is always there to help.
This is the worst professor I have ever had at BYU. His Spanish is so hard to understand, making it difficult to follow instructions. I asked three of my classmates if they thought the same thing, and they confirmed it.
Professor Wiseman is one of the best Professors I have had at BYU. He cares so much about the students and about your personal growth, it was so refreshing to have a professor like this. Your level of learning is entirely up to you, if you want to stretch yourself, you can, if you don't want to, its up to you. Such a great class.
I think this is a horrible professor. Terrible Spanish. Chaotic syllabus. Seems rude. Not timely. Avoid.
Professor Wiseman is the best professor at BYU. Period. You will not meet someone who cares more about a student's scholastic and professional success than David Wiseman. Those who are complaining about his Spanish skills are obviously lacking in overall Spanish comprehension and only understand when everything is spelled out. Take his class!!
this is the wost professor in the Spanish program at BYU. I agree, as a native speaker, that his Spanish is unbearable and hard to follow. I wouldnt take him again. I don't like his class at all.
I am not a fan of this professor. His class always feels rushed, messy, and at times disrespectful. I would avoid.
Stay away. There are many better professors in the Spanish department. I have taken a few classes. Wiseman is frustrating to students. He is often late, and does not seem to care about us. I will not take another class with him.
Despite the ease of this class, I had a hard time because of prof Wiseman. He just was not helpful when I needed it most. He was never in office hours and gave very little feedback on assignments. His classes felt boring and lackluster. I agree with some people on here that his Spanish stinks.
The type of class is interesting, but the professor was the worst thus far. There are many professors who teach this class, so avoid Wiseman. He always seems unprepared.
Do not take this class at all. You will regret it. Wisman is a typical dude, but I did not like his teaching. Classes are so boring. Too much reading and no feedback. I concur that his Spanish is hard to listen to. Take a different class.
I hate this class with professor Wisman. He is unkind and frustrating. I can never speak to him without him acting upset. I wont take another class with him.
Dr Wiseman is the man, he's super nice, I took him for 321, 355 and 451 and really enjoyed it. It was so nice to just know that you could get an A if you just meet the basic requirements. I only bought 1 of the super cheap textbooks that he used and was totally fine. He's super understanding and extended a deadline for me when my life got crazy
This is my second class with professor Wiseman. I only took another class with him because it worked with my busy schedule. I think the saying goes, if you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all. I will stick with that. My rating says it all.
He is awesome! So nice and willing to work with students. Really cares about the students learning and progress. He will answer all your questions within a day of asking them. If you do the work required, which isn't a whole lot, you will get an A and love the class. Take him! Also, a super spiritually enlightening class.
Dudes, this guy is THE BEST. honestyl i dont know whats up with his rating cause it does not reflect him at all. He is super willing to work with his students (can get extensions on stuff). He does not assign a lot of busy work. all of his assignemnts are super clear and not hard if you just put some work in. he's Great. take his class for sure.
He's a baller! Super cool, his classes are honestly super inspiring and not too difficult. You do have to put in work, but the work is honestly pretty enjoyable and you can apply it all to your life. He cares a lot about your personal growth and spiritual progression. He is super clear with his instructions and cares for his students. take him!
David Wiseman is one of the best professors I've ever had at BYU. He cares about his students and is always very prepared for class. You will NOT regret taking any class from him!
David is seriously one of my all time FAVORITE professors at BYU, he completely changed my outlook on life. Class structure was great & he taught me so many life skills that I still use. Almost didn't take it from him bc of these negative reviews, but I am SO glad that I did. He's super caring & accommodating. One of the best that BYU offers.
Dr Wiseman has been my favorite teacher and it is not even for his personality (not meaning that in a bad way or anything). He set up the class in a way that it followed the aims of BYU. I actually felt like I could apply what I learned. He made me want to do the very best because it was relatable. He was the most understanding of all of my teacher
I don't mean to sound dramatic, but I would go to war for this man. Professor Wiseman is one of the most kind, understanding, compassionate individuals I've ever met. His course--which is laid out so clearly and follows the BYU AIMS so exactly--was inspiring and personalized. Far and away the best professor I have ever had in my life.
Professor Wiseman is honestly the best professor I've ever had. He cares so much about his students and wants the best for them. He will help you and work with you when you run into any sort of problem and he really focuses on helping you grow as a human being. Not sure why theres bad reviews!! Do not have enough good things to say about this man!
Honestly one of my favorite classes that I have taken at BYU
This guy's ratings are really skewed for some reason. Yes, his Spanish is kind of annoying to listen to, but his class is SO easy and he really focuses on individual growth which is awesome. This class was like taking a deep breath and trying to change for the better. Wiseman is very inspirational and he's a good guy in general, solid choice.
This was hands down the best class I have taken at BYU so far. Professor Wiseman is so inspirational and caring toward all of the students in his class. He doesn't teach just to cover material; he really wants to help his students become better people and be happy in life. He's always willing to help and is never critical. I would highly recommend!
Prof. Wiseman is kind and understanding. He has said multiple times that the most important part of our education is us and not our grades. He is really lenient if you are struggling and is such an easy grader. As a Spanish major, I can say it was one of the easiest (too easy, hence the 4 rating haha)and least stressful classes I have ever taken!
He is literally the best teacher I have ever had and if he ran for president, I would vote for him in a heartbeat. His lectures are focused on Spanish culture, but in a way that makes you ponder and rethink even our own culture. It is seriously like philosophy mixed with Spanish, in an amazing class with an incredible teacher.
It was online, so all pre-recorded. We didn't have long lectures, but rather he had like a 10 minute video before each section of the homework. He really cares about his students, and you can tell that he is trying to help us grow - not just give us a grade.
This was the best class I've taken at BYU. Everything was on-demand and pre-recorded, but you could tell that he genuinely cared. When I was doing my assignments, I felt like I was doing more to just check a box; the readings were relatively easy and really make you think about Hispanic culture. All tests were open-book essays which was also a plus
He is amazing! I took this class as an on-demand course. It was organized super well, and the content was always meaningful. He is clear with expectations and is not a tough grader. He genuinely wants to help students progress. Great professor! Take this class from him!
I love this man. He genuinely cares about his students. It was an on-demand course, but whenever I sent him a message with a question, he responded back within minutes. Grading is relaxed because he actually just wants you to learn and grow as a person. I have never felt so cared for by a professor and I never even met him in person!
Professor Wiseman is the best! I honestly which every professor was like him and understanding of the current situation. He really cares about his students and really allows students to think about the literature. I would take another course from him because it really helped me. You will not regret taking a class from him.
Professor Wiseman was one of the best professors I have had a BYU, and I've been here for almost 5 years. He is extremely helpful and caring, and he gets that his class is not the most important thing in our lives but just wants us to learn. I constantly found myself really enjoying his class, and each week was enriching! 10/10 would take again!
Great class and great prof. The most attentive and understanding prof I've had at BYU and it was an online/on demand course. I was taking a full course load while working and living in CA +Im lazy (hence the B+), but an A was easily attainable. I think I turned in every assignment late and he was the one messaging me to make sure everything was ok!
David was a great teacher. This class was an easy A but also very uplifting and very well structured (very important for an online class). David is one of the most genuine professors I have ever had, and I really respect him for his perspective and the motivation he gives students. He also always gives positive feedback on weekly reflections.
Honestly was so surprised that his rating is this low. Really awesome guy. I took him for both 339 and 355 and he was incredibly kind and taught well. While visiting him in office hours, I never felt like he just needed to be done with me. Took the time to help. Genuine dude.
I don't know why David has any less than 5 stars. His teaching oozes with sincerity and importance. He cares much more about you and your positive experience in the class than nitpicky things about grades and he's totally willing to give you leeway if you run into personal challenges. The class organization was also awesome in my opinion. 10/10!
Wow. Best professor I've ever had. His focus is on the students and their progression. He values all opinions and he makes it clear that he is on a learning journey with us.
This was on-demand class that really didn't demand much from me. It's an easy A. If you are looking to learn a lot and apply yourself and grow intellectually, this isn't the class. That tends to be the case with on-demand classes, but I imagine that Prof. Wiseman's class isn't that challenging in person anyway.
Profesor Wiseman Is probably one of the best professors ive had in my time at BYU. He was super considerate of making assignments worthwhile and he did not assign so much work that the class felt undoable. Amazing professor, would recommend to anyone!
There are a lot of reviews on here that are pretty confusing because I had a great experience in the class. Dr. Wiseman is really approachable and from what I saw in the class he really showed he cared about our learning and success. There is a lot of reading in the class, but you can get by if you skim it.
Dr. Wiseman is the nicest man on the planet. This class was super easy, but so uplifting and interesting. Like, you can do all the coursework in a day if you want. The readings are sometimes a lot, but you can skim and do well.
This guy is amazing. It was an online class so I wasn't able to interact with him in person, but I could tell how caring he is. He really mixes spirituality with learning. He's so caring and I know he'd do anything for his students. Take this class. The only hard part was putting together some longer papers, but it's an easy class besides that.
This was an on demand class, so I was worried at first but it was AWESOME! Profe Wiseman cares so much about you and you can tell he means it. The papers (one for midterm, one for final) aren't too bad as long as you don't procrastinate. Keep up with the course (it goes by week) and you'll do great!
He was so nice and overall a great teacher. Even though the class was online he was a very involved teacher and would frequently comment on the assignments that I submitted. He made us feel like he really cared about us. His lectures were fun and not boring.
Profe Wiseman is one of the best professors I've had at BYU. He cares more about education rather than grades. He gives readings and assignments that I found inspiring and worth-wile, and not just busy-work. He was also super caring and involved for an on-demand course. This is an educator, not just a professor, would take again any day!
This was an amazing, learning-focused class that had just the right amount of work. Prof Wiseman cares about his students and is helpful and flexible. There is a lot of reading, but it's not excessive. Small assignments, discussions, participation and effort, and a few papers. Would 100% recommend - plus it's not going to stress you out.
This was my favorite Spanish class. Professor Wiseman really helped me to stay calm throughout the semester and understand that everything will be ok. He really wanted us to succeed. I loved the set-up and organization of the class. Literally the best professor I have had, and I haven't even met him in person.
Professor Wiseman was the best! I had him online and he was super great to interact with. It is an easy A and I mean really easy. His online format is the best I have ever had.
This man might change your life. He is the most caring professor I've had, especially for an online class! You can get by with an A by BSing things but don't. He gives opportunities for you to apply everything you learn to your life in a spiritual, intellectual, and character-building way. Take this class for Span certificate!
Professor Wiseman is 100%, without a doubt, my favorite professor that I have had at BYU! He genuinely cares for each of his students individually and teaches it in a way that even those who hate reading will enjoy the course material. I am very self-conscious about my speaking but he creates a welcoming environment for everyone to participate.
Wiseman makes the material super meaningful and the class was very fulfilling! I honestly don't understand how anyone could write a negative review about him lol. Loved the material and loved him as a teacher!
This class was super easy and required very little of me while still imparting some interesting perspectives. You have to buy the book, but it is very easy to get a good grade in this class.
Prof. Wiseman is one of the best professors I have had. The way the course is set up is very organized and allows you to plan and study well. Prof. Wiseman also gives good lectures and is very compassionate and knowledgeable. I really enjoyed the material and felt that this class benefited me and my future. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
Professor Wiseman is the greatest teacher I've had at BYU. He is so kind and is incredibly aware of the needs of his students. He is really inspiring. The structure of his class is set up really well. I have learned so much and haven't felt too overwhelmed. If you have a chance to take from him I would definitely suggest you take that opportunity.
He is one of the most genuine and kind professors I have ever had. The structure was easy to follow and even though there was a good amount of coursework, it all felt impactful. I learned a lot and felt inspired throughout the semester by what I learned. I absolutely recommend taking a class from him, even if it's just online.
This class was very structured, and I enjoyed the material a lot. The midterm and final were both papers, and I much preferred that over exams. He knows a lot, and the TA's are pretty flexible with late work.
This class was more spiritual than some religion classes. The way Prof. Wiseman put the class together I felt like the material actually applied and connected to life. If you want to walk away from a class as a more open-minded person and not just to check a box, this is the class for you. Weekly readings, discussion boards, and papers not tests
Never met the guy in person but you can tell he cares so much! His class is very structured, however, I did often find myself wondering why I was doing some assignments because they didn't feel necessary. I have a hard time doing class online, so that was probably it. There are lots of assignments and readings each week. Assignments are super easy
Professor Wiseman is SO nice. He is so understanding and cares so much about helping us become better humans and more understanding of different cultures, especially Spanish ones. He is so intentful and very accommodating. He cares about the well-being of his students! He's taking a break from BYU right now, but when he comes back, take his class!
