Painfully boring with required attendence and a class average of a C. It's a required course and he's the chair of the department so just tough it out. He posts notes, grades, and info on Blackboard.

Professor Wolgin is an extremely hard teacher who gives tests that are close to impossible to do well on. I have studied so hard for all of the exams but he words his questions in a way where you can easily mix up the answers. I would never take a class with him again. The average of the class right now is a 67 with one test left to take.
His tests are EXTREMELY hard!! I've never gotten a C before in any class but I did in his. He is a very intersting teacher and knows his stuff, but no matter how much you study it is very unlikey that you will get good grades on the tests. He does give a big curve though. Overall I learned a lot in his class but he is very tough.
Research Meth- the class isnt really hard yet his lectures are just boring, just read the book and the notes and you'll be ok. the hard part is the PAPER!! its long and VERY VERY time consuming
Just read what you're supposed to and study the lecture notes. He words his test questions a little funny so don't let it trick you. The only really hard part is writing the 12 page paper. Lectures can get a little boring but he's a smart guy. He likes talking about geeked out rats.
This class is hard. The tests are difficult so you do need to study a lot. The class was very boring, he's very smart but doesn't really care about what others have to say. There is a paper which consumes a lot of your time, but I thought it was easier then the class. We can't avoid it so just take it.
Very smart, knows his stuff. Sometimes has problems keeping you engaged - it can be dry material at certain points. Recitation is not hard, just a bit of work. Youre psych majors, get used to writing. This was easy. The tests ARE HARD, but only because theres alot of material and they are worded in a way that makes you know the stuff intimately.
Good teacher, a little boring. Paper isn't that hard since you write it in small segments. Material is pretty basic but tests do require you to know the material well. Don't take if you don't want to study at all.
Got good grade. Worst teacher at FAU. Take other profs.
I took graduate psychopharmacology with Wolgin and loved the class. Yes, it is a challenge but the material is difficult . His lectures are well-prepared and clear. He is ethical and professional at all times. I like him very much.
The hardest class i've taken thus far. Tests are worded to trick you and study guides help a little but you need to study the notes and read the text too. 15 people in the course received an A or B. Avoid this professor if you can. The first class i've ever failed in my life.
Lectures were spent with too much time explaining simple mechanisms and concepts, when the exams tested for dramatically (cannot stress this enough) more nuanced knowledge of the topic. Book is absolutely critical--it will provide you with the detail necessary (but it is a slow read!).
It is very difficult to pay attention in class and the boring material does not help. 1/3 of the grade is from a (long) paper you write over the course of the semester, it is not as bad as it seems as it is broken down and the TA's help you with each step. Read the book, its the reason I know the material and got an A. Not a bad class just boring.
He takes attendance every day and lectures the whole class period. Couldn't stay awake for any of his lectures because he is monotone and boring. Read the book and you will do fine.
Do not take him, unless you want to be given nonsense notes that has no purpose for the exam.
Do not take his class! all A's except for this one. Paper is easy but his tests do not match up to his lectures or notes. No extra credit
Overall, Dr. Wolgin is a traditional professor. He lectures the whole class time. If you do not need to take this class, I wouldn't, as the the class itself is boring. The research paper you have to write, is pretty easy, as its broken down and the TA helps you out a lot. His test are not that hard, but you do have to study and know the concepts.
Dr. Wolgin knows his stuff and can teach well. Take him!
As long as you understand the material and do okay on exams and well on the parts of a long paper, you should be okay.
Just do the paper assigned by a TA, and you should be okay. Just do the exams assisgned by Dr. Wolginm and you should be okay. Dr. Wolgin is overall a fine professor. You will be fine if you sign up for him!
Well-versed and experienced, seems passionate about his lecture topics. Take notes and definitely read the corresponding chapters in the textbook for a broader, more conceptual understanding. Exams aren't that difficult if you truly know the material
The final research paper is made easy in this class since he breaks it up into different segments and you get easy 100 points for each. But the exams are tough and his notes are worthless. They're vague and you can't fill out your study guide using the notes at all. You have to write your own notes because his are terrible.
This class was insane. No extra credit, no curve, no homework, no other grades except three extremely hard exams that contradict the lecture notes. When everyone was failing he offered to base our grade off a single 130 question cumulative exam at the end of the semester. It was a make or break gamble that had people crying. Shouldn't be allowed.
Professor Wolgin is a nice instructor; however, the course is hard to obtain the materials. Theres just so much information and details that its difficult to remember it all... definitely need to study hard in order to pass the class. I advise reviewing the notes daily if possible! Good luck!
If you want an A, print out his power point presentations and memorize as much material as you possibly can. Don't take the class lightly like I did. I was failing this class along with the majority of my classmates until he graciously offered us a cumulative exam at the end of the semester which became our final grade (if we chose to do so).
you have to go to lecture, but he explains everything so clearly its worth it. I would take him every class if I could. I recommend highly, but only if you can study from your own notes!!!
I'll start off with the positive.. Dr. Wolgin is a nice guy, and will work with you if you miss an exam for a valid reason, he's very understanding. Now to the negative.. the amount of content per exam is insane because there is so many details. Print out his powerpoint and start studying EARLY. Do not take this class lightly!!!
Dr. Wolqin doesn't seem too concerned for students to pass his class. Final grade is determined by 3 exams there's NO homework or extra credit opportunity. his tests are 80% of the time complete opposite from his lecture slides. too much material to be memorized for each exam (it's insane). If you're not a good test taker drop or you'll fail!
This class is killing me. There is NO homework and your final grade only depends on 3 HUGE exams. If you screw up one you're pretty much screwed. No curve, no extra credit. There is so much material on each exam that my head feels like its about to burst. If you're not a good test taker, do not take his class
This class is horrible. The amount of small details you are required to know is impossible. I have spent countless hours studying. The professor is boring and reads exactly off the lecture slides. I honestly dont think he cares that most of the class fails. There are no assignments besides 3 extremely hard exams. So avoid this class at all costs.
Coming into this class, I was terrified from reading the reviews. however, if u do what u have to do & come to class, ull be fine. I recommend recording his lectures & listening to them a week before the test b/c theres a lot of info. Ull not do well if u dont put in the work. 3 tests& 1 paper that balances out a test if you do well on it.
Any of his classes are difficult. In this one, we had 3 tests and 1 paper with recitation homeworks to do. They are not as easy as it may look, so take it serious and study as much as you can. Theres no extra credit and he does not curve grades. Good luck and do your best!
Honestly I've never had a professor care less. I love psychology but this professor has made me hate it. We only had 3 exams, which were our only grades in his class. Even after studying for his class for countless hours i found it had to even get a C on his tests. Something needs to change in his department ASAP.
Hundreds of pages of lecture notes to study yet 50 Q exams on a specific 1/10th of the material. No one passes exams (as you can see everyone's grade on spreadsheet) solidifies that it's not the students misunderstanding of the material but the professor teaching it. Head department could care less. Roommate took same class/dif teacher and got A-
Since this professor is "head" of his department. I took my concerns to his boss about how the course was being taught and results from it. They seemed more concerned with the fact that he sent out everyone's grades by Z# than the actual grades people got. I would say 28% of my class finished with the credit they needed from this course. Don't take
The first class I've ever had to withdraw from. Horrible lectures and the class grade is only based off 3 exams. DO NOT expect extra credit or any other activities to help your grade.
I was afraid to take this professor because of the reviews. So far the exams have been pretty straightforward, completely from his lecture PowerPoints. The book isn't really necessary. Prof posts review questions for each exam, if you answer and understand them, you will do well. Not sure why so many students seem to have problems with this class.
The professor could teach a little faster. I felt it was too slow and I got bored and taught myself everything at home instead. I am succeeding with an A, however It is because of my own studying. He is respectful and can in fact teach well, he is just very slow and somewhat monotone. The class is based off of 3 exams that are harder than necessary
There were 3 exams and they were pretty easy. The thing that killed me was the paper. It was graded section by section and was a little hard to keep up with. If you're on top of the due dates you'll be good and pass the class.
This professor is by far the hardest and most difficult I have ever taken. Even with proper studying and attendance to class his exams are still difficult. He only grades on three exams and there is no extra credit or grades to help balance it out. Even if you do his study guides they don't do much. If you are able to take any other professor do it
Leaving pandemic aside, during lectures for some reason he would only lecture to one half of his classroom, ignoring the people sitting on the other side. Also, that one time he sent us a missing question via email during a 60min timed exam. This professor's lack of care and his rigidity will make you feel like this class is designed to fail you.
Horrible professor. He literally does not care about anybody. Class average was D even with the change in grading scale. Grade is based on 3 exams and he purposely didn't give us enough time on the final because he wants to see us fail. Originally, final exam time is supposed to be an hour n 20 mins & he only gave us 60mins for 50 ?s. AVOID HIM!!!
He's not helpful at all. Tried getting advice on how to improve grade and test scores throughout the semester but would not help besides saying pay attention to lectures. Would not retake.
dont take this class with other difficult classes. Have to study and know the content very well. its not just the information, but also the evidence/experiments that are behind it. I studied a week in advance for his tests and got high A's. many people failed. tests are fairly straightforward if you know the material like the back of your hand.
All you need to knowthe final paper is 10 to 12 pages.
Professor Wolgin's immense knowledge of this subject matter is obvious. The material is very difficult and memorization heavy. However, his lectures are wonderful. They are focused and clear. He has a talent for breaking down difficult concepts into easy to understand chunks. He explains the tougher material in multiple ways to help you understand.
Dr. Wolgin is incredible. The material is very complex and has lots of different layers to it but Dr Wolgin presents ALL of it in an extremely organized and methodical way. He explains everything extremely clearly and usually stops every so often in each lecture to recap. I paid close attention to every lecture and studied for exams and got an A.
3 TESTS that's it. Book not required nor will it help, his lectures and lecture notes are key and where he gets all the exam questions from. Memorize the notes and listen to his lectures where he goes in DEPTH into the concepts and you'll pass with flying colors! He knows his stuff, he is a very kind professor and always willing to help w/ concepts
Professor Wolgin definitely knows his stuff and gives the information in a very organized way. There are just 3 exams and those are the only 3 scores for the overall grade. The exams are proctored but as long as you read the notes that he provides for each unit then you are ready, all the information for the exam is literally on the notes.
As long as you carefully listen to the lectures and answer all questions on the review sheet, you'll get high grades on all 3 exams. Same for PSB 3002. That's all I did for both classes and I got an A+ in both.
Ok so the exams are kinda difficult BUT if you do the study guides/review sheets, they are easy. Super knowledgeable and you WILL learn or FAIL in this class.
Definitely pay attention to lectures and make a study guide for them if possible. He posts exam review questions way ahead of time so please do those, they really help. Majority of the grade is 3 exams but he gives 10 extra credit points for doing his academic integrity workshop and quiz. He responds to emails quickly and is a nice guy to talk to.
Dr. Wolgin definitely knows his stuff, pay close attention to his lectures and do his study guides in advance. However, the class is graded on 3 difficult tests, and 30% is based on a 10-12 page essay in the recitation course. Our essay section is graded way too harshly, it will be nearly impossible to earn an A no matter how hard you work.
Dr. Wolgin is very sweet and knowledgeable. His class is easy and I was a bit scared going into it with the bad reviews, however I am ending with an A and it wasnt hard at all. Just make sure to attend class, keep up with the sections of the paper for recitation and you will be set. Study his lecture notes for exams and you will get an A
He's a fairly nice professor and structures his lectures nicely. Most people won't show up to class and that's why the reviews are so bad. I for don't show up to class you probably won't pass. If you listen to him while he's lecturing and study with his study guides you'll pass. Even if you just listen to his lectures and don't study, you'll pass
Terrible professor. PowerPoints hardly cover any of the criteria on the tests. Hope you like taking about rats too. Every example in class revolves around a rats and the study of rats. Everyone in my class had a tough time on the exams. Half of the exam questions were on things that we just barely mentioned in class. 1/10 professor.
If there is any other option for another professor, TAKE IT! Only 3 exams all trick questions, he uses his own terms and definitions, no extra credit, and he requires you to take another class to complete a 10-12 page essay with TAs who grade very harshly. Pay close attention to his lectures and take notes. No amount of studying will save you.
3 difficult exams with trick questions, and 1 lengthy research paper. The PAs who graded the essay had no mercy, your expected to have the knowledge of a scientist. No matter how hard you study for the tests youll only get an A if you make a lucky guess. Record every lecture dont miss a word, dont bother with the book, and try not to space out.
Lectures are exactly what the exams are. Follow his study guides, pay attention to lectures and you'll do fine. Most people don't show up to class, that's why they fail. If you have trouble focusing, video record the lectures. I went to every class, did the study guides, and studied about two days prior- never got less than an 85 on the exams.
Amazing class with great subject matter on the behaviors of the brain with all the intricate processes occurring constantly. The lecture notes are the key to passing the tests but study them thoroughly. Grade is based solely on 3 exams. No homework or quizzes so prepare and do well on the first exam to ensure a good grade. Great professor!
He is a good professor, I really liked him. It is only 3 exams and a final paper. Study and take good notes because he has very specific answers that all sound the same, so know the information. The recitation portion (writing the research paper) part of the class was so aggravating but if S. Gnall is still a TA for that get her!
Dr. Wolgin is nice but his lectures are pretty boring, so I found it almost impossible to stay engaged. There is a recitation (research paper) portion of the class no matter what, so I was expecting the lecture to be a little more lenient. Grade is made up of 4 exams, & they were hard. EXTREMELY specific questions for no reason. Wouldn't retake him
Run. From. This. Class.
The tests are CONFUSING!!! No matter how much you study or how well you know the content, he makes the tests pretty impossible. The answer choices all sound the same or just don't make sense. STAY AWAY IF YOU CAN!!!! I think anybody would be better. NO EXTRA CREDIT OR CURVES. You can tell he doesn't care how well his students do.
Terrible professor. Pick someone else.
I'm honestly surprised at the negative reviews. Wolgin isn't the most engaging lecturer, but he is easy to understand and transparent about the exams--which were straightforward as long as you went to lecture and did the study guides. The 10-page research paper sounds daunting, but you work on it throughout the semester and receive ample feedback.
The worst professor I've had at FAU. I'm a neuroscience major and I usually take heavy science classes like physics, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. This class was the worst one yet. I almost failed because it was only based on three difficult tests and a long research paper. The TA expected your research paper to be written like a scientist.
Attend lectures, pay attention and ask questions! Use the study guides very precisely when studying for exams and use the questions on them when taking notes for each lecture. The research paper sounds much worse than it is, you work on it throughout the semester and depending on your TA, it's super easy to do well. Would def recommend him!
Second time taking a course with him, the content he teaches is difficult but he is easy to follow along with. Do your study guides as you go, and you can pass. Paper sucked to write but is definitely doable and feedback/help available. this class takes effort but an A is achievable. Took in summer and still had enough time to complete assignments.
He is the reason I didnt graduate along with plenty of other students. The professor is in desperate need of retirement. Goes on tangents, lecture notes aren't notes just talking points for him so you better be good at taking notes based on pure listening. TA grades the paper like her dog would die if she misses something
I am not graduating because of this man. I highly recommend taking another professor as he will do his best to make you want to drop out/change major. No assignments other than three exams that had an average of 62 across all students. It is unbelievable how he is allowed to be teaching given the results from his students. Please resign.
Somehow he manages to make the simplest looking class be rocket science. The concepts aren't even that hard to get but maybe he just has an ego because he makes the test so confusing for no reason. His TA is just as bad as him like why are you so miserable you're not even that much older than us. Take Dr Hoff, it's worth the drive, or fail
Would've been less stressful to commute to the Jupiter campus twice a week during rush hour. One of the hardest classes of my undergrad and it shouldn't have been. The notes provided are in his own shorthand. If you're not able to focus on lectures&take notes at the same time, you're in for a lot of difficulty. Go to TA office hours for the paper.
I was worried ab taking this class at first with him bc of the reviews, but really, I thought Wolgin explained everything clearly and was always open to answering questions. Use his study guides and lecture notes! They are VERY useful for preparing for exams! The book was pretty useless, I did fine without it.
One of the most difficult courses I have ever taken. He talks all day about rats and gets so lost in whatever example he's talking about that it's unclear what his point is. The grade is based on 3 exams that are near impossible and he doesn't curve or give extra credit. Would NOT recommend taking this class with Dr. Wolgin
I honestly liked Dr. Wolgin and thought he explained the content in a clear and understandable way. Yes he talks about rats a lot, but those examples he provides help to grasp the content. I got an A on the exams, and my best advice is to USE THE STUDY GUIDES. You have to understand the content, not just memorize it. Show up and listen.
Dr. Wolgin is a great lecturer. If you show up, pay attention, and study the lecture notes/study guides, you have no reason not to do well.
Do not take him. Grade is made up 3 tests total (confusing and wordy) and your discussion section. If you do bad on the exams you will fail the class regardless if you got an A on the TEN PAGE PAPER. Teacher is rude and will not try to help you, ever.
If you think about taking this professor, don't. He does not help out whatsoever, and the exams are ridiculously hard for no reason. You are only graded on the 3 exams for the lecture( besides the manuscript from the discussion) and are granted no other assignments or extra credit to help out your grade. DO. NOT. TAKE.
Only graded on 3 exams, and they're truly not bad at all. I got an A in the class, and I just showed up to lecture, took some notes on what he said, and used his STUDY GUIDES. The exam questions are reflective of the study guide and straightforward. Don't be turned off by the negative reviews. Trust me, you will be fine. Just do your part.
He told the class that students don't do good on his exams and the lectures aren't helpful but it isn't his fault. Take as you do but he basically just said he's a bad professor.
Only had exams has test grades, won't answer questions in test reviews, used trick questions and wording to trip you up on exam, extensive and hard to study information.
The class was overall much easier than I anticipated. Just don't procrastinate and put in the effort!
