He's a clear teacher and makes funny jokes, but the essay tests are a bit dumb
really funny actually keeps you awake
He was good, but 50% is too much weight on 4 essays for the final.
Stay away from him
Very funny, but obnoxious and cocky.
Clear, Concise. Rather hard. Good Professor
Entertaining, but tests are difficult. Will keep you interested, but you HAVE to study for the tests.
Tons of fun, but don't be fooled, the tests are hard.
An excellent teacher. He makes the study of law come alive with funny stories. He teaches with a lot of experience. I loved his simulations. He really cares about his students.
Essay tests suck a bit as people said too much weight is on them. i knew more about the class than i think the grades showed.
My favorite professor yet. You don't have to be a polysci major to enjoy class. If you study, you'll ace the exams. Highly recommended.
cocky as hell
A good professor.
awesomee class. yalof is histerical and his class is a pretty easy A if u just pay attention.
Yalof is the man! By far my favorite professor ever, between his knowledge of the subject and his brutal jokes about the "teachers pets" in the class, the hour flies by. There is a good deal of reading but it isn't excessive...you'll need to have done all the readings to do well on the tests.
He is a great professor, but you have to go to class b/c he gives you almost all the answers then. The only other thing you have to do is read the "reader." He gives you the questions ahead of time, but TA's grade everything so make sure you go to discussion and that your TA likes you.
One of the best professors I've had in my entire time at Uconn. Show up to class, do the reading, and think. He's one of the few that will make you work for your grade but it's worth it.
Yalof is amazing. You could not ask for a better professor. I know I will never forgot what I have learned in this class. He challenges you to think and while the class is difficult, for what you learn it is truly rewarding. I would be disappointed if I went through UConn with out taking this class.
this is a great prof! he is really interesting and funny.his tas were very helpful (except joey, someone said he graded unfairly). be really cool with you ta and study intently before exams and you will be fine!
Prof. Yalof is an amazing professor. His lectures are really interesting and will make you have an appreciation for politics. His tests are essays, but he gives you the questions a week before, so all you need to do is prepare them beforehand and you'll do fine. I 100% recommend taking this class with Yalof- you won't regret it.
Good professor, funny. Has the TAs do all the grading, but they are all really cool and helpful -- try to take sections with Brenna or Michelle if they are the TAs. Hard to get an "A" in this class but easy to get an "A-".

Great professor. Not a bad class at all. Show some interest and you'll do fine.
AMAZING professor... one of the best, if not the best professor at UCONN. Everyone wants to go to class! Also best TA is Brenna!!!
Amazing professor, you'll never have to worry about being bored during lectures. He gives you the exam questions ahead of time, so as long as you study from them you'll most likely do fine in the class.
He is one of the best professor's I have ever taken a class with. He had a great sense of humor and made the class so much fun and very interesting. The exam questions are given to you ahead of time, but preparing them is a lot of work. Definitely make sure you show up to discussion sections! Great class overall, I would definitely recommend it!
I loved this class! Yalof is a great professor, he makes the lectures very interesting and he is actually really funny. The assignments from the TAs are easy and the exams are essay exams, not multiple choice.
Funny guy, makes the calss entertaining..the essay exams aren't bad...just be sure to outline before showing up.
Very funny and entertaining. def a good class. Exams are all essays but he writes the questions in a way that forces you to do allll of the reading and go to the lectures
Honestly, he is a funny guy that clearly likes to entertain an audience. His class is easy, but there is no point in going. The exams are all essay questions that, if you have the book, you can look up the sources in two seconds and get an A, take this class, only go to discussion, get an A, easy enough.
Awesome teacher, very funny and keeps your attention the whole time. Mid term and final are essay, easy if you put in the work (your TAs help alot in review sessions). Mostly from the book, didn't go to class at all second half of semester and still pulled an A on the final. But its actually a fun class if you go and very lively. Def worth taking.
Yalof was a great professor! He's a really funny guy and he made the material interesting. His class is very easy as long as you regularly attend lecture and section, and take good notes. His exams are all essay, but the TAs have really helpful review sessions before hand. Don't buy the book, I never used it and I got an A. Take his class!

Lectures are incredible. Informative and hilarious, Yalof's personality is great. He's clear with his expectations and information. Exams are all essays, questions given beforehand, and they are pretty reading intensive. Not a hard class, but you have to work for an A.
By far the best class I took this year. Yalof is clever and hilarious; his cynicism is refreshing. Exams aren't easy, but you get the questions ahead of time, the TA's are extremely helpful, and if you prepare well you'll know exactly what to expect. Even if you're not a PoliSci major (which I am) you should DEFINITELY consider this class!
He is awesome. You do use the books all the time and you don't necessarily need to go to class because all the information is in the books, but he is an awesome guy with a great sense of humor! Favorite class! All his tests (midterm, final) are essay but he gives you the questions prior. It is not easy but oh well. There are also two papers (short)
One of the best professors I've ever had. Entertaining, smart, funny, interesting and fair. Take his class if you can.
LOVE HIM! Such a funny guy has a great sense of humor and somehow manages to make a 200 person lecture interesting and engaging. Most of the exam is based on the discussions so lecture isn't mandatory but def helps. Take him if you can! Not too much work and a good laugh!
My most favorite professor I have taken this year. For an intro course he does ask for a little more work but most of it is reading. Very funny and gives you the essay questions before the exam. Go to section because it counts as a grade and you get two short papers (2-3 pages). He is hilarious and will be looking to have him as professor again.
Best proffesor I have had at UCONN. Makes a potentially dry subject very interesting by presenting material in a clear yet interesting manor. Take any class you can with him!
Not a Pols major but found this class to be so entertaining and informative. Professor Yalof lent a very real view on the american political government system. Lecture was extremley entertaining and engaging. Would love to take a class with him again. Attend discsson as it's very helpful for solidifying notes, and do homework. Easy A.
Yalof is exceedingly knowledgeable, thorough, and engaging - class was an absolute pleasure. While the material can be challenging at times, there are plenty of discussions in class during which the trickier concepts are revisited and clarified. DO NOT SKIP CLASS! Lec notes aren't available online and participation is worth 20% of the final grade.
One of my favorite PoliSci professors. highly recommend any of his classes.
This is one of the best lecture classes I've ever taken. Yalof is super interesting and thought-provoking. He is hilariously sarcastic and loves to poke fun in all political directions which make the lectures that much better. The test consist entirely of essay questions that are given a week in advance and are still tough but it's worth it.
One of the best professors I've had at UConn. He made understanding politics a LOT easier for anyone who didn't know much prior. The lectures were always super interesting and his syllabus was clear and easy to understand. There were homework on huskyCT but they were easy and the TA's were extremely helpful. Review sessions too!!
Dr. Yalof is definitely one of the best professors I've had! He's hilarious and gives the questions prior to exams. He keeps everyone interested in the topics we're covering, especially when it comes to current political events. TA's are awesome and host review sessions before both exams!
Awesome class, Yalof is really interesting and knowledgable. Most interaction is with TAs who are also really good! Take this class.
This is that rare class that you don't mind getting up early for, easily one of the best professors at UConn. As the department head for political science he is incredibly knowledgable, and his sense of humor makes him very approachable after class and during office hours. Very easy homework, two short essays. Gives exam questions ahead of time.
Yalof is hilarious, sarcastic, and knows his stuff. Great class if you love history and politics. TA's are great (Drew ), you get two papers and it's so easy. The class was an easy A, only need textbooks for exams, I didn't read all semester. Mindtap assigments are basically common sense. Show up to lectures he doesn't post them. Favorite class!
Very good sense of humor. He knows his stuff pretty well and he knows how to use humor to arouse students' desires to learn those American Politics stuff. Just attend the classes and discussions and you can probably get an A or at least B+ at the end of the semester.
He's cynical and pretty funny, his lectures are never dry and actually teaches you about the American government. Tests are all essays but the possible questions are given beforehand. The grading really depends on the TA you have. The material might be hard to those really unfamiliar with politics.
He is so amazing. Never dry, keeps things light and interesting. He's really funny to listen to, he constantly bashes his TAs as well as both sides of the political spectrum in a respectful way.
He was one of the best professors I've taken at UConn. He was hilarious but teaches you so much. If I could take every class with this guy, I would.
He was a great professor, very engaging, and made class interesting.
Dr. Yalof is a fantastic professor who does an incredible job of taking a "cynical" look at American Politics while keeping the lecture lively. He makes a lot of jokes and is easily accessible to students. The textbook was not particularly useful, but the discussion section readings are essential to a good exam grade. Easy A, for sure.
Dr. Yalof is one of the best professors I ever had. I did not mind getting up for his 10 AM lectures because his lectures are very entertaining. I would take this class again anytime. Also, he gives you the answers to the midterm and the final before, so it is impossible to fail.
Great professor, always entertaining lectures. Some answers to midterm/final essay Q's are in his lecture notes (which he does not post) so make sure you get them. My TA Tim was pretty great too! Do easy mindtap. Textbook was only needed for midterm and final essay questions. Take this class with Yalof!
His lectures are so funny that he made learning the material so easy. His midterms and finals are relatively hard but there is minimal homework and little to no study time needed.
If you can fit him into your schedule, do it.
Yalof is the man. If you take him you won't regret it. I learned so much in this one class and retained it semesters later. The mock courts added to the overall experience. Keep up with the readings and participate in class and you'll do great. You will have to work hard but it's honestly worth it in the end.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Lectures are entertaining, makes funny jokes, relates the lecture notes to current events. Gives you the essay questions for the 2 exams 1+ weeks in advance so you can prepare. Not too many readings for the discussion part, but necessary to answer the essay questions for exams. Extra credit opportunities
Professor Yalof was really funny and his lectures weren't a pain to go to. His class was really easy altogether. Exams were super easy because he gave you the questions a week early and you literally just study them.
yalof is amazing. he really cares about his students. you have to go to class bc he doesn't post lectures online, but he makes it worth it. hilarious dude who uses humor to break up boring topics & keeps students engaged. exams are so easy he gives you the questions a week in advance & you literally memorize the answers for the test 10/10 recommend
Yalof is an amazing professor and I would highly recommend taking his class. Lectures are super interesting to attend, especially considering the subject matter can be fairly dry, because he is really funny and passionate about the subject matter. Only read the enduring debate because that's all you need for the exam.
Dr. Yalof is my favorite professor so far! His lectures are amazing and he is hilarious, although you do have to go to class since he doesn't upload the slides. The midterm and final are all essay questions, but he gives you the questions a week in advance to study. The textbooks are necessary, as you need to cite them on the tests.
Professor Yalof is one of the most intelligent professors at UConn. His lectures are awesome but he grades tough and only gives a few opportunities to get grades. Final was worth 40%. Spend lots of time on essays and you will do well.
Amazang Professor. His lectures are incredibly interesting and really engaging. The lecture seems more like a conversation than him speaking at you and he can make the course material really interesting.
An absolute icon and gem at UConn. He is very funny and passionate and he teaches in a way that is very conducive to learning. Be respectful and get in good with him and you will enjoy every moment.
Professor Yalof is a great professor and an amazing lecturer. His lectures are super entertaining, and he's really funny. I 100% recommend taking his class! He is very passionate about what he is teaching, and it makes class so much better. The coursework is not very difficult or overwhelming at all. If you put in the effort, you'll succeed.
Professor Yalof is truly inspiring. His lectures are entertaining and extremely informative. There was never a moment during one of his POLS 1602 where I felt that his lectures became dry. As the head of the department at UConn, he is also incredibly knowledgeable on EVERYTHING politics related! TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM IF YOU CAN! 100000/10!
Yalof is probably the most passionate lecturer I've ever heard. He makes topics that are traditionally quite boring really interesting and he tied current events into the lectures which made the material even more relevant. If you're going to take POLS1602 I wouldn't say to take it with anyone except for Yalof.
Dr. Yalof is a very funny guy, he always keeps lectures interesting and this was definitely my favorite Gen Ed I've taken so far. He also drops your lowest chapter test but your grades mostly focus on the exams and papers along with participation in discussions. Overall, a fairly easy A and you get to learn about things that's topical
Dr. Yalof is the best professor I've ever had. I had POLS1602 with him two years ago, and I heard great things about 3807. He's hilarious and is super understanding about work, given the pandemic. Textbook isn't "necessary", but will be extremely useful for the court simulations. Grades kind of tough, but totally worth it to take his class.
Dr Yalof is one of the best profs I have had. He is hilarious and time flies during class because his lectures are that entertaining. He truly cares about his students and is always looking for ways to engage them and challenge them in a good way. The simulations in his class can seem daunting, but in the end are both fun and well worth it. 10/10
Was accidentally placed in this class my fall semester of my freshman year as a PNB major and still ended with an A. The class was a lot of work, which is expected of a 3000 level class; tons of readings, graded participation, papers, white house simulation, other activities, final. Yalof is funny, caring, and overall a great professor.
I do not understand why he has high ratings because this man talks in circles and I do not understand him. He graded the opinion papers very harshly and I would not take his class again. He does not post his powerpoints and you are only graded on a few things. He interrupts you while you are trying to speak and I was not a fan of that at all.
Yalof is a GREAT prof if you just participate. show you care about the class and he'll help you in any way you need. if youre looking for an easy a his classes aren't it, but if youre willing to work he's an amazing prof.
Passionate lecturer but sometimes doesn't exactly align with textbook, still enjoyed. HW wasn't too bad but time consuming. Discussions very easy. Attendance isn't necessary. Also goes fast on slides sometimes miss info. Class is basically AP GOV.
Basically AP GOV but with a much more passionate Professor. Textbook reading is used for quizzes. MAKE SURE TO READ THE OTHER REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS. I thought they didn't mean much, but exams and papers are based on the other readings he assigns you. Closed book exams, but grading is lenient, same with additional papers in discussion. Great Professor!
His class is pretty easy but his exams kind of suck. They are very long-winded essay questions that he gives you a week before with lots of parts and sources to remember. Other than that the class is great:)
Prof Yalof made clear grading criteria making the class a pretty easy A. The only issue I have with him is that he does not post his lectures or the slides. If you miss class you must read the textbook and/or get the notes from a friend. The class also requires a lot of reading (i did little of it and still did well, become very good at ctrl F).
Prof Yalof is my favorite I have ever had. Engaging lectures and material; finds a way to make it interesting for anyone. Go to discussion sections, your participation matters! If you prepare for tests you will get an A. Amazing prof and great TAs. Could not speak higher of this course, I will definitely be looking for more of his classes.
I forgot to bring a pen to the midterm and Yalof asked the class to let me borrow a pen. He's sweet, his lectures are hilarious, relevant to the political climate, and informative and his exams are really easy if you memorize the key point of the people's essays. The discussions are easy, just talk a lot, the discussions & TA was great. Great class
