Funny as hell, but makes you work
Ex cop, military -- conscious of what's really going on in da world --
Tough grader, you will need to take a LOT of notes in this class. But he does make history interesting and is an overall good teacher.
Wonderful guy. Knows a lot about politics and history. He has a great sense of humor and knows how to keep a class interesting. Tells some great stories too. One of the top professors in my college career, and the very best from SJCC.
i took his class for highschool credit as a sophomore and got an A, so it can't be too hard! and he's teaches so history is actually interesting!
Awesome teacher, gets students involved in class and links history to current events.
Great teacher, very interesting guy. He teaches history in regaurds to current events, and makes you get involved and care about current events, i'm signed up to take Poly. Sci. with him next term.
No lesson plan, hard grading, and lousy lectures all rolled into one. Tests are all essay format with unfair grading. I'm not going to take Hist 17B with him.
Look sober, sit straight, say only intelligent stuff, be prepared to take notes for days... and memorize everything! There is one midterm and one final exam, both of which are in essay format. And don't bring french fries!
Great teacher!! very helpful. Sure makes a boring subject like history a lot of fun. really interesting lectures. But students who are not that good in keeping up with homework assignments arent encouraged cuz there is a lot of homework due every week.
Very interesting, I like his political views, he makes the class very fun
I had him for Poli Sci and hated his lecture style. I received a poor grade because I slacked on the reading and didn't go to class. I've learned now that doing the reading and going to class earn an A, and I earned one. Duh!
Good lectures, but be prpared to take notes fast; it's not high school after all! However, he often does not keep up with the schedule (we only went as far as WWII in HIST 17B!!). MAKE SURE TO FOLLOW HIS REQUIREMENTS ON THE ESSAYS!! I warned you!
his class inst that hard. very easy assignments, and he gives study guides for his exam. only one midterm and one final.short weekly reading and writing, but its easy.then he gives u alist of items for the exams and u can pick what u know to write about.
terrible. Class spent debating controversial issues. Little to no lecture on any given day. I chose to play on my laptop because participation does not affect your grade. midterm=40% and final=60%. popular topics for debate are: taxes weapons Iraq & taxes
I took him for hst 1A, 1B, and Poly Sci. He is a great teacher and is very insteresting to listen to. People who don't like his class probably feel that way cause they do not participate in the discussions. A good class has a lot to do with the effort
What you see is what you get with Mr. Yancey! Half of class time devoted to current events. The assignments are between easy and hard. He only offers essays as his test and he is a tough but fair grader. As a speaker, he is very engaging to listen to.
Excellent teacher. Very intriguing lectures and current even discussions. Some do not like his teaching style, but if you are the no b.s. type who loves history, you will love his class.
The current news lectures were cool and his history lectures were easy to understand. Bad thing is the test essay questions were DIVINELY VAGUE. I ended up SPECIFICALLY WRONG when i found out what he meant on the test question.
Take his night classes. Great teacher personality wise. Lectures are boring and long but by the book pretty much. Don't bother reading, just take his notes verbatim, memorize, and recite them for the midterms. Guaranteed C and if you do real well a B.
Hard as hell. Really good leacture though. Test are just a bit too tough.
he is hard as hell. but u can pass.do homework study the study guides and take notes verbatim. he also spends too much time on current event esp political issues. u bring up any thing that is not related to politics well then u haven't caught his attentio
i took his night class during the early summer and man it was easy. just read and take LOTS of notes, don't even need the book. practice using the study guides- write ahead of time about each so ur better prepared for exam. nice guy, good teacher
His class time is spent debating current political affairs that do not have much to do with history. He is very oppinionated and is not open minded towards other individual's philosophies.
Very good on deatils. Just write down exactly what he said in class on the test and you will do fine. But remember to write down the "significance" on you easy questions or you grade will do down a lot.
love him! he is so hard and he is a great teacher. he knows what he is talking about. gives out study guide for the midterm and final. no hw. ne need to buy book. just go to class and listen to his lecture.
One of the best teachers at SJCC! he comes off intimdating at first, but as long as you go to class, study notes, and read the book, youll be fine. doesnt drill you w/ his own personal beliefs, encourages critical thinking, dont be afraid to state your opinion but be ready to back it up!!
David Yancey is so easy. His intro 'talks' are the funnest part of class and actually make you sad when you can't make it. Tests are ridiculously easy; just learn to write well and you'll be fine. He needs to run for office or something. What a bright ****ing guy.
"Alright guys, what's going on?"
he's a great teacher, he's hard times, but as long as you take good notes and study you'll do fine. just remember to answer all parts of the question. i kept on forgetting the significance. thats the only reason i got a worse grade than i expected. he's an awsome teacher all around though.
grades hard...never writes on the board, you have to listen and write fast to keap notes...test are hard, and he grades hard...has discussion @ the beg. of class..
Yancey is very open, which is fine, but if you disagree with him, it's all on, he brings out the gloves! Someone asked him a ? about a certain topic, and his reponse was this: Religious Republicans are idiots. He was rude and didn't care about hurting students (me) feelings!
He just rambles about current events. He spends like 1 hour on it and only 20 minutes on notes 4 the next reading. DO NOT take his class if u don't need it. Try to take a different teacher if possible. But if u must take him 4 history 01, make sure you do ALL the hw, take notes and study 4 da test
He's a great teacher. You have to pay attention and take good notes. I will definately take him for my other history classes. He needs to run for President.
HE IS TUFF AND UMM...UMMM...I WISH HE COULD GRADE DIFFERENTLY THAT WAY I CAN WORK TOWARDS A HIGHER GRADE VERSUS HAVING ONLY 2 CHANCES TO MAKE A SATISFYING GRADE.....
he is very helpful but the grading is very hard. only grades you on 2 tests and a final. if you dont pass, you just dont pass. no extra credit. no homework. just 2 tests. if you cant make it, you fail!
he's interesting!!!!!!!! just take notes, study alll your notes because you won't know what he will put on the test.
Horrible teacher. Talks about current events for 1 hour; no relation to history...says, "history is important & you need to know it" yet he doesn't teach it. His fav phrase is, "Hey guys, what's going on?" NOT RECOMENDED!!! Take a diff teacher esp if you DO NOT like history.
HORRIBLE teacher. Doesn't like his job. Talks about stupid current events for almost the entire class time. The current events topic has NOTHING 2 do with the class. If he says there will be a review, DO NOT BELIEVE HIM! da review will only b da last 2 mins of class. So Study study and do hw!!!
He is terrible. He is good on class as he talks most of the time. His grading sucks. His exams are all off the wall. He will ask about People, Places and Events in the exam. There is a great risk, if You take him. GOOD LUCK
Mr. Yancey is special because you either love him or hate him. Yes, he begins every class with discussion of world events. What's wrong with that? You'd rather study history? There's plenty of time for that. If you can write an essay in an English 1A level, and you should be able to if you are in college, then you should have no problem.
Hes a great entertaining teacher. Take notes, read the chapters and answer who, what, where, why questions and you will pass his class.
Mr. Yancey, since you know so much why don't you run for office? You'd nip the Bush Mafia right in the bud and save us all a lot of grief.
no notes he just lectures. makes you feel stupid when you ask a question. believes his opinions are absolute truth. bashes on bush and it gets annoying. goes off onto a tangent a lot. take him only if you like to study because if you do then itll be easy for you!
Bad....
Well whats going on approach is good for the poli sci class, but doesnt give what u need 2 pass tests. He tells u a test date, & on that day changes it. If u show any affection 2wards conservative ways he eats u up in front of the entire class. The day
I love Mr. Yancey!! I have taken him for 3 history classes. I like that you talk about current events. He is kinda hard, but just do your homework. The most important thing is the study guide. you have to know who or what it was, and why it was important. he doesnt care about dates. he wants you to know why it is significant. For the essay question you have to choose one side or the other he doesnt care which side you choose as long as you have good arguments why you chose it. have fun!!!
If you are not interested in learning about history and wouldn't mind listening to his liberal jibber jabber all class you'll love him!
Very well informed, really motivates you to get interested in what is going on. Can be a little demeaning but has godo sense of humor about it. As long as you can think, form an opinion and have a reason for your opinion you'll do just fine.
A very biased (politcally) teacher. It's more indoctrination than an education. I am liberal, but he just takes it to the limit. Otherwise, he teaches fine, but it's mostly your responsibility to do all the reading and understand it.
I am learning some in this class, but I agree with the previous rating that Mr. Yancey spends too much time pushing his liberal agenda. I too am very liberal, but a classroom is for teaching, not pushing ideas into the heads of young people. I feel sorry for conservative students in his class, even if they are wrong. Just kidding!
Mr. Yancey, I know you read this, so please quit your job and take out AHNOLD! Or even better, BUSH!
It is true that he voices his opinions, but once you get past the first hour of talk he does a good job of informing you of events. Do not take his class if you like a very slow learning environment. He will rattle facts out at you.
Extremly biased teacher. I am liberal but his indoctrination just makes me so bored! He gives one side of the story, and if you don't agree he makes you feel like an idiot. Should teach a politics class instead of history, since he spends at least an hour shoving his political agenda down our throats. A very blah teacher.
He's alright. You need to do the readings though or you'll be lost in his long essay exams. No multiple guessing. Exams are: 5 essay definitions of 1 page each. One topic essay of 3-5 pages each.
Very dry professor, not organized at all and self-centered. Bias.
Yancey cracks me up. He has a low tolerance for stupidity. I like that he tries to make people aware of politics & current events but sometimes he does seem like he pushes his ideas. But he makes people think and thats important. I didnt really read the book, I just wrote down everything he said and did really well in both 17A & 17B.
If you like a class that has no homework and only two tests, midterm and final, you may do well, but be warned, his test are essay format, each one requiring five one-page essays and one two-page essay all on different topics. VERY DIFFICULT. I never studied so hard for tests in my life. He is very liberal and seems to loathe Bush (which I loved).
Sucks
Yancey is a good teacher and everything. However, if u hate writing essays don't take him. Because his midterm and finals are based on 1 pg of each 5 indentifications and a two page essays. And he does notgrade on a curve =(
Wxpect to read and think a lot... which means learning a lot. But indeed, the amount of work expected does seem a bit much. Should we really be trying to detail the nuances of internal vs. external taxation at this level, without being given a real historical context? Also, half the class is discussing current events-- no help for test or hw
I think Yancey is awsome!Study!
You have, have to read the book. Excellent, excellent with is lecture. Best teacher in the school.
This teacher sucks big time. All I learned from his class is N.O.T.H.I.N.G. Yes...I didn't learn anything in that boring class. We mostly talked about "current" events which had no relation to History. The current events stuff never was on a exam. He grades u hard & he only wants u to put material from wut he has taught & not from any other source
If you want to take his class, you must study hard or you can not write any essay assignment at all. I enjoy being in his class and got an A. His lectures are not boring and very interesting. You don't have to do any home work, he only assigned just midterm and final.
great professor!
I had him as a teacher for both His. 1 and Pol. Sc. His class is difficult and requires a lot of studying for tests. The best teacher I have ever had at city. He really teaches you the way you would be taught in a state school. It felt great to get A's in a class I actually had to work hard at!
I like this teacher. No homework at all. Just study hard for the midterm and the final.
Best prof & class I've had at SJCC. He begins with "What's happening?" [Current events are tomorrow's history]. Interesting paradox: his history lectures are very balanced, but his current events discussions come from WAY out in left field. Still, he's very interesting & fun to debate with; he has a sharp mind. I liked him & recommend his classes.
Horrible professor. Talks about "current" events but it has nothing to do with History. I don't know why people are saying he's a good teacher. He may be good in teaching a poly sci class but not history. Rambles on & on, lets you out of class late, and there's onlya 2 min review for exams. Don't take him...not recommened.
Mr. Yancey is a good instructor. He has strong convictions regarding politics and current events. He enjoys discussing them and welcomes open dialogue and argument. Some are intimidated by this, but I think it makes for a more interesting class. Attend class, take notes, complete the reading and writing assignments and you will be fine.
Make sure you read your book and answer questions. Keep up with current events. Do extra credit work (it's extra so do expect a number). Be yourself. You'll love the class.
A very good teacher I learned alot about, history and current events. There is no homework and only two tests, just be sure to follow along in lecture and you will be fine.
Very good teacher! Very smart when it comes to history and current events.Interacts with class by conversation and is open for debates especially when it comes to politics. Will joke around at times. In all actuality you dont even need the text book. Go to class, take good notes, and study for the test. One of the best teachers at City for sure.
Yancey is brutal. I normally get A's but first time I took his class I got a D. I took it again and got a C. If you want a high grade don't take him.
Yancy yaks just about boring/useless current events and takes up the whole class time. He lets you out late and is a hard grader. You have nothing to study off for the exams and the book is too hard to read. You mind as well read it in a different language. He's boring and it's a useless class to take. Take another professor. WORSE professor ever!
Yancy is a far left liberalist who spouts his agenda. He demands that when you write your essays that you put what HE wants on it without really letting you know what that specifically is. If you write each essay as if you are an extreme democrate and have contempt for the USA's historical rise than you have a better chance at getting decent grade.
he was awsome the class very straight forward show up to class read study not hard if your used to being told word for word and cant think for yourself dont take the class you'll fail he give HIS oppinion but that dosent mean it has to be yours as well he just expects you to have an oppinion good luck
he does impose his liberal views on all students.he uses this class to indoctrinate many.because my husband is a republican, having the EXACT opposite views I am able to discern truth from error.younger students are influenced by his one sided political views.other than that, he's a great history teacher-you just got to research the other side.
Mr. Yancy is not at all a great instructor. He spends too much time on current events instead of teaching the actual lession. The book is very hard to read, and the questions on the homework takes about two hours to complete. I wouldn't recommend him.
I appreciate a challenge. I believe we all have a right to choose and he doesnt care what your opinion is, just that you have an opinion and get involved. He is right, if we are uninvolved who fights for social justice, not the republicans. His role is very important and I think he is someone valuable to cross paths with. HIS CLASS IS PRETTY CHALLE
Great teacher with a good sense of humor. He has standards but is fair and easy to talk to. The negative comments some have left here are probably from those that failed the class. Mr. Yancey is one of the best teachers I have ever had.
outstanding teacher. made me think about politics when I used to hate it. He is funny and strong; still powerlifting at his age (I am not sure how old he is but?). Good lecturer and his tests are covered in the lectures. Easy to talk to.
He is very opinionated, and clearly a democrat, which is a good thing. There are only two tests, so don't wait till the last minute to read or look over notes. Ir you're a procrastinator would not suggest this class; otherwise, all good. He cares about the students, and he is involved in campus affairs. (he also gives extra credit)
He was great, he kept order in the class, had personality, and was able to teach history extremely well. He made a boring class like US history seem worthwhile, and even interesting.
I was a first time student after 14 years of being out of school, Mr Yancey was hard, he has his views on the world. Everyone does not agree but sometimes people need to listen to other people. Like he said in class if you want to know about history talk to a old person. So if your a first time student read the book take notes.
he's cool i really just have to show up to class and take notes its really easy just take a side on the essay have facts to support what your saying and easy A yeah he goes off on a tangent about how horrible this country is but so what it true ;0)
motivated me to teach history!! had him for two classes...great teacher...keeps class interested with humor and comparisons to current events. Keeps orderly class without being mean. Most important to me is he can discuss current affairs and politics without being a whackjob liberal like most history/sociology/polisci profs.
Very hard class! One Mid-term and one Final, both essay form. He lectures for the entire 3 hours and for the first 45 minutes talks about current events and politics. I found him intimitating and scary. He rarely gives extra credit. If you are history challenged, take Grzymala, Kevin or Millner, Steven. If you are great with history, u will do fine
very hard compare to other theachers
yancey is awsome honestly best teacher i have ever had he is also very easy just one midterm one final he gives you a study sheet so its no big going to class is important because he lectures and its going to be on the test he is not a hard teacher people are just lazy and like to make things hard i got an A and he doesnt make you memorize dates!
Took his class during summer last year. He begins class with current events and lectures for a good half an hour before moving on to lesson. Your grade is basically a midterm and final. As long as you read the text and take notes, you'll be fine.
Yancey is one of a kind. 2 test, all on material that's been previously covered. He's a tough cat to read though, he'll never stop challenging you no matter how well your doing in class. I personally thought he was a cool teacher and if I had to take anymore history it would be with him.
He's one interesting character with an unpredictable personality. Zero tolerance for nonsense! Doesn't give much homework but his test are hard to pass unless your an avid reader who keeps up daily with your chapters. I wouldn't take him again if I was paid to.
I took Mr. Yancey's class over the summer and I honestly loved every minute of it! This guy reminds me of Al Bundy, for some reason, but in a 'cool' way lol. Not gona lie, it was a challenging class but very informative and worthwhile if you're into history, like me! :) I'm actually taking 17B with him right now. Awesome teacher - take him!!!
If you look at who posted about this professor, you would notice that if you dont agree with his political views, he will fail you. Intresting that I took his class and recieved a D. When I took the same class at SJSU which is a alot harder I recieve a B. If you have conservative view, do not take his classes.
Two test, Midterm and Final. Homework NONE! For the tests he has Identifying words: 50 but he only picks 10 and you write about 5 of them(1 page in little bluebook for each of the 5. Then he has Essays on both where he tells you 10 comments and you agree or disagree and need to argue why or why not and have supporting facts for your position.
very simple rules; come to class, take notes, read the book. As for reminding me of Al Bundy, I would say more a Red Forman. He has a KISS method, Keep It Simple Stupid. Also about not having the same political views, that is BS. Yancey is clear on what he believes but never grades against you for disagreeing. Totally recommend him for any History
This class was so easy. There is homework every week with straight forward answers directly from the text book . You do group discussions which helps a lot with getting answers. He gives a review sheet for the midterm and final which is useful. He keeps class interesting. Very funny man and is definitely not afraid to say what is on his mind.
Straight forward teacher, tells it like it is, he does have liberal views but does not try to force them upon you and will not grade against you if you don't agree.(thats just conservatives complaining)Read a chapter a week and take notes. On his tests dont just regurgitate everything back to him, seperate the important stuff and write about it.
Does not specify what he wants(topics yes, how he wants them explained, no). He docked me many points on the midterm because I didn't give him an answer he wanted to hear. Your answers need to exactly what he's looking for or he will flunk you. He proclaims he wants critical thinking but only if it agrees with his opinion.
OMG!! I TOOK THIS CLASS FOR SUMMER SCHOOL & THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE AN EASY "A" BCUZ THE TEACHER WAS ACTUALLY COOL. BOOOOYYY WAS I MISTAKEN!! THE MID TERM & TESTS ARE SOO HARD!! EVEN IF YOU STUDY FOR DAYS THERE ARE TOO MANY IDENTIFICATIONS TO REMEMBER! SURE HE GIVES OUT A STUDY GUIDE BUT IT DIDNT HELP MUCH & I READ & TOOK NOTES!! HES A HARD GRAD
He is very opinionated and a hardcore liberal. Someone said that if you're conservative he will give you a bad grade-that's a lie-he likes have in class discussions and hearing people with different opinions (as long as they're not ridiculous). The class is not hard as long as you do all the homework which he gives you opportunities to redo.
Very good and straightforward professor. Grade in this class was midterm/final only which was fine with me. If you take notes when you go to class you'll be fine if you study and read the book at least sometimes. I learned a lot.
Took his class during winter session. a definite liberal by the way he talks about republicans. only has midterm/final (essay format) no actual homework but must study in book&study guide or fail the tests. grades based on your thoughts not so much on knowledge but helpful to know the topics. not mean at all, good sense of humor.
He is a very nice teacher. Great lecturer! BUT his one midterm and one final are hard as hell. If you have a good memory then go a head and take his class. Just a lot of memorize..A LOT!
this guy lectures only and does not write ANYTHING on the board-hope you are a very very fast writer. also he only has one midterm and one final. they are both essay form. by the way, the man is an EXTREME liberal and cuts on Republicans at no end and gives a million excuses for the liberals. He will tell you that you should look at both sides but
Difficult teacher, book is too hard to read, talk too much about current events, everything depends on the midterm(30%) and final(50%)...just pray for a passing grade or take another teacher...
Good professor. His current event discussions make me more interested in what is going on with the world. His tests are passable as long as you take notes, study, and read the text. He's very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions if you need clarification. I would take him again.
This absolutely has to be the worst proffesor to ever teach. Ex cop, very bias, and overlly opinionated all rolled into one. If you want to be reminded of how terrible a proffessor can be then he's it. Essay format exams, and super dull lectures equals = big mistake in taking his class. Seriously!
He was very nice he always try to help you, the class is long but helps you a lot to understand what's the txtbook is about
No mult choice test its all writing, he gives you a study guide with about 45 vocab/events and he picks 12 that will be on the test. You pick 5 vocab words and write 1 page each in a blue book. His lectures arent very good but my best advice is to figure out which vocab words will forsure be on the test and study those most. Intersession student.
Great teacher, not only history but civics as well. Anyone that complains about him did not try in his class. He wants you to be aware of what is going on in the world, and you are part of it. He engages the student to not just wait for someone to do something for you but to get out and make changes. He shows you history repeats so change it.
Essay Questions Exams that require how much one can argue and convince. Even if answers are correct, if he does not agree student's arguing positions for exams, the student will not get a credit for answers. If it is hard, it has to be doable, but the class he teach is not doable. He coerces you to change not for SJCC benefit but to his own.
Yancey is a good professor. He wants his students to learn about history but also about being involved in our communities today, keeping up with current events, etc.He does talk a lot about his own personal opinions but doesn't try to sway anyone's beliefs. Not my favorite class, but it's part of GE so if you have to take it you might as well take him
I am dropping this class after taking the first midterm. He gave no specific instruction as to what he wanted you to write about. On top of that, the book he assigned was more like a novel. He expected you to know facts that he did not lecture or inform you about know. Useless book. I had to google terms to study them, but it wasn't "significant"
Do not understand the comments left by other students about Yancey. Yes, at first the way he gives his midterms (all identifications and essays, not multiple choice) can be intimidating but if you study correctly you end up learning so much more than you would if taking an easier test. Great teacher overall!
Very difficult class. Goes way too quickly and not easy to follow through. The exams are extremely hard. It's difficult to receive an A grade in this class.
Mr. Yancey is a very understanding and straightforward teacher. I took his class this past summer and as long as you go to class, pay attention, read , and take notes then the class is simple. If you study your terms and know your material well enough to have an opinion then the Midterm and Final are not hard.
Professor Yancey's lectures aren't easy to follow. But as long as you read the chapters assigned for homework you should have an idea of what is going on. Just skip taking notes and listen to the lecture. Yancey has a pretty good sense of humor as well I thought he was hilarious. If youre unsure of your grade take advantage of his extra credit.
It was a tough class. Learned more from the lecture. The book was a disappointment. If you can answer who, what, when, where, significance, etc on 10 of the subjects in the study guide for the exam, you should be good to go.
Not recommended!
Amazing. Hes so into teaching and he knows how to talk to his students. I was someone who took history because it was required but having taken this class, I learned at lot and id recommend him as a professor to take. Just go to class and take notes! You'll definitely do well.
Pretty enjoyable class. Writing assignments are tedious, but are useful for studying for the midterm and final.
It's a tough class unless you put in time and effort. take advantage of extra credit. pay attention to his lectures, he gives "hints" for what will be on the exam. he's a little goofy which makes lecture not entirely boring. Ask lots of questions, if you don't understand, dont be shy. he's a bit intimidating but his answers is very useful.
Mr Yancey is one the best professor I have had. He develops your critical thinking and broadens your view of the world. If you take his history and political science classes, he will not only teach on the topics covered, however he will encourage your critical thinking but also your own interpretation and understanding of the events.
Prof Yancey made me more interested in history than ever before. There is a midterm & a final and that is it. The more he discusses a topic, the more likely he will be to choose it as a topic on the tests. He truly wants students to become engaged and form their own opinions. I wanted to take him again before I graduated so I took Poli Sci as well.
I loved Professor Yancey. He's really funny and crqcks jokes during his lectures. Overall he's a really nice guy and really witty. He also gives like 3 extra credit projects and I did all 3 and got a B. In all honesty I probably only deserved a D but the extra credit bumped my grade up well. Would take again!
Yancey is a tough teacher, but he knows his stuff. Be prepared to read and take notes. There is only a midterm and final. So if your a DSPS student, use the DSPS center to your advantage for tests. Do not underestimate his test outlines... Study all of the identifications and essay examples. He is willing to help you succeed, but you need to ask .
There is no homework. Only midterm and Final. He makes you work for your grade but gives extra credit ! I really like this teacher because he made me actually learn about history and i loved it. Be prepared to take notes!
unclear grading criteria, ineffective teaching methods, lack of effort, poor communication, does not base grade on demonstrated proficiency in subject matter, more likely based on opinion/present mood/something like that. . Often openly rude and condescending towards students, creates an intimidating, hostile, and offensive learning environment.
Class is great. He has discussions with the students before the lecture to invoke a connection between both us and him, and us and our world. He's willing to offer his wisdom and he has a great sense of humor. He's respectful toward his students' opinions. But get ready to memorize, memorize, and memorize for his exams though.
David is a very good teacher who clearly cares about history and his students actually understanding the work. No textbook, but there is online reading. Lectures are fun. Midterm is 40% of your grade and the final is 60%. If you read, take notes, and study the study guide, you should do well.
Prof. Yancey is amazing! He really cares bout his students.I thought that I would fail this class but I didn't give up. My English is not good but I read more online, followed study guide and asked him when needed. I got my final grade today and it's absolutely worth fighting for. He cares bout IDEAS and UNDERSTANDING! I got MID-A & FINAL-A.
Professor Yancy was one of the best history teacher ever. His lecture is very understandable and fun. I learned a lot from him and earned so much knowledge about history. I would take him again except my time didn't match with his class. I would recommend him.
He comes off as cold at first, but He has a great sense of humor that takes a bit of coaxing to get out. He loves to ramble, but its entertaining rambling that is usually relevant to what we are talking about. Extra credit feels well earned. Tests feel like a good reflection of knowledge. Love to get Bogey's Pizza with him one day. Wonderful.
Professor Yancey is very knowledgeable and I enjoyed his humor and wisdom. I would definitely take his course again. You WILL be successful If you go to class, take notes, read, and study. Do not procrastinate and work on those study guides ASAP. Take advantage of extra credits! At the end, the grade you receive is one that is earned.
Overall, this professor was rated at least above average. Textbook was online, yet the only reason why you should buy it is because he gives out extra credit assignments. He is big on lectures and most of what he says will be on the tests (one midterm and one final) so note taking is a must.
So, Yancy has a great sense of humor, but most classes are dry and boring because his lectures aren't interesting for the more visual learners. The only things that count in the class are two tests (Midterm and Final). His study guides aren't all that helpful, by far the most stressful class I have ever taken.
Thank you for having made critical *thinking* part of instruction. Thank you for having us write up an editorial on a news article of our choice for every class meeting. Thank you for guiding our impressionable vigour to treasure and guard that which we had all taken for granted until now. Thank you for teaching us to understand. -Pharaoh Alberts
