This teacher is friendly and personable, but does not teach well. He is redundant, self-absorbed and provided no helpful instruction. He merely reiterated what the book had to say. I could have taken an independent study course with the same result.
Easily the most energetic teacher i've ever had, highly competent, worth taking class just for the entertainment if you're not interested in philosophy.
very fun and INTELLIGENT teacher. he's easily the most popular philosphy teacher for good reason. he talks a little fast, but he makes the class interact and it is very interesting and fun. take his class: you won't regret it
loved this class, he makes it very interesting.

I thought he was a great teacher. Just be involved, ask questions, do the work...not hard at all to get an A.
Easy class, great teacher, very entertaining and enlightening. Great class.
He does talk rather quickly, but he will take the time to explain what it is he discusses. But, you have to have the balls to ask. He is definitely an engaging teacher!
He is a good teacher.
I've had a LOT of his classes, AWSOME teacher. if your going to take a philosphy class take it with Dave, Unless of course it's logic, then take it durring the summer with Debra
extremely intelegent, very insightful and entertaning. Fun class with a lot of discusion. Hes always willing to talk outside of class if you need help or dont understand something. Sexy in a philosophical way. you will look at life in a different way after 1 class with Dave.
interesting class, besides being smart, the professor is also good looking! you will learn lot
he is the smartest person ive ever met. he is truly an inspiration
very good
Great professor, instills thought, stimulating discussions, don't miss this one...
good teacher, funny, didnt dread going to class
Tends to ramble and talk really fast, but only because he is truly p****ionate about the topic. Always willing to help and very knowledgeable on the topic. As long as you do the homework and ask questions, you will get an A and learn a ton. Great teacher and very personable.
Great teacher!! A wealth of knowledge concerning classical and modern Philosophy!
Philosophy department chair,Awesome guy, giant brain with a PH.D,total nerd :),LOVES PHILOSOPHY!, great teacher! This is an easy "A" if your not retarded. Just do the work and come to class....oh yeah and ask a question every day. not hard to do.
Easy class, debate a lot. This Dr. speaks a lot, and fast too. Take it for an easy A, I don't work very hard at all in class.
Dr. Yount was extremely interesting and very helpful. He made a frustrating subject very entertaining with lots to learn from.
Easily one of the smartest men i've ever met. I was already deeply involved in philosophy and had taken phi classes before and he blew my mind in the first hour. Take this class.
Great teacher! Very nice about giving 2nd chances. I think he gave me about 10! But like everyone else said, LOVES LOVES LOVES Philosophy and is very passionate about what he does. :) Just dont take it at 8am because he hates it when your late!
Great teacher! Definitely prepared for class, and ready to teach! Answers all questions thoroughly, and always willing to take time to see you outside of class. He's passionate, and obviously loves his job! Understanding and a teacher you need to take!
Great teacher, very inspirational and thought provoking.
With regards to MCC only one other teacher surpasses Dr. Yount. Although if anyone deserves beyond a Ph. D. in what they love it's him. Super clear, very interactive teaching style, highly motivated and humours too! He wants you to want to learn what he teaches, if you can't find a place in your academic life to like Yount drop out of college.
I took this prof based on practically flawless ratings. I do agree with the person below me. The ONLY thing I kinda have a hard time with, is he speaks awfully fast. He does say a mouthful!=) other than that I wish more instructors used his teaching technique!
Very nice man. Very helpful when need be. EXTREAMLY boring class if you are not into the subject, but he does try to make it fun. I wish i could have just slept in most days. Papers are hard if you don't understand. Homework daily but its not hard.
Professor Yount was one of my favorite teachers at MCC! He knows everything there is to know about philosophy. Not a lecture class at all. We would read these really interesting articles and come to class and talk (debate) about them. The only grades you get are 3 papers that he grades very fairly on. SO HELPFUL and I LOVED the class!
I was afraid of taking Philosophy but Dr. Dave made it tolerable. He was extremely helpful when it came to papers and presentations, always willing to be available to help. He's funny too, and I liked the Friday joke of the week.
Very boring subject, but he does his best to make it interesting. Dave is very helpful. I would recomend him. Just do the work to the best of your ability and you'll get credit. I got an A.
Great teacher! Sooo inspirational! He's got the best personality ive ever came across. Class def gets you thinking.
Dr. Yount is an amazing professor. He is very down to earth & understanding. He does not judge anyone & is very open-minded to his students views. The course was boring in the beginning but ended up being a very interesting class. He has a great personality. Dr. Yount breathes Philosopy! He will definitely make you think & open your mind!
Cool guy, is willing to help, and just wants to help you culture your mind.
Did not enjoy this class at all. Mostly because of my interest level of this class. It was so boring. If your the kind of person who doesn't mind reading and typeing essay's then this is your type of class. I just think philosophy is so boring. The teacher was great he just talked really really fast.
Class isnt bad if you are into attempted stand up humor that isnt anything more than self indulgent nonsense. talked way to much and didnt like to be interrupted when he was "discussing" the subject. If you like student interaction this isnt the class for you. Like the subject but not this class.
Enthusiastic about what he is teaching. Loves to talk. Good teacher and good person.
Dr. Yount is very funny and easy-going. Article summaries from the book are due almost every day of class. There is only one test and two 4-page papers. Class discussion was limited but he answered all questions from the summaries and I always left with a clear understanding of the concepts covered. I would recommend it.
This teacher is terrible. talks very very very fast. i had no idea what he is talking about and the papers made me very confused. i would not recommend this teacher. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Great class he's cool talks fast offers ways to record him talkin
Dr. Yount is a great teacher, even though he does talk a lot, he is always willing to help you understand the material.
So boring. You sit and listen to him talk the whole time. Nice guy, funny guy, somewhat helpful, mildly easy class if you show up (Attendance mandatory) but not worth it. SO BORING
Great teacher, lots of energy, bit of a fast talker. Eager to help in any way, this class opens your mind to all possibilities. Highly recommend to take no matter what your major is. It will help in the long run.
Excellent professor. He really takes the time to explain the material and wants the students to understand. I will be taking him for the third time this semester, so I definitely recommend him. If you need a humanities credit, take his class because it is fun and will be useful in the rest of your life. He helps you learn how to argue the right way!
David Yount is legit! One the the best teachers i have ever had. His classes are very interactive and enjoyable. If you get a chance take his Environmental Ethics class you should take it. I learned things that i believe more people should be aware of, about the humans role on Earth. This class is definitely worth taking! Be ready to participate!:)
I have had this teacher for 2 semesters now in introductory philosophy and bio/med ethics. He makes everything boring much more fun. His grading is based on 3 papers which are not that easy, but the rest is on easy article summaries and participation! So if you like a fun energetic teacher, and would like to voice your opinion take his class :).
Great Teacher. Must be very involved to get an A. Totally willing to work with you, but can be demanding on his papers. Great interest in the topic !! He loves what he does so much that he talks too fast at times. Took him SumI semester, quick course which may have been the cause of the fast speech. Overall, knowledgeable and willing to help !!
Good teacher. Lots of fun. Expects you to be there, participate, and think about what you put into your assignments. You have to put a lot of effort in for an A but Dr. Yount is a good teacher. Loves his job.
Really good, funny & helpful. He does lecture, notes, some film, & has a lot of time for questions and discussion. Even the most shy people came out of their shell in the end. Only papers, no tests. He likes helping students & will meet with you in his office. He likes it when people state their opinions with notes or sources to back it up. Easy.
Prof Yount is a brilliant guy, and FUNNY! his class will keep you pretty busy but hell open your mind. I have taken a few classes with him and will take more in the future. A lot of reading and writing, but thats the nature of the class. Great Teacher!
Professor Yount is brilliant, awesome, and funny as hell!! Makes Philosophy fun and interesting.
Dr.Yount is a great professor, he's always looking to keep his class laughing and having a great time while they learn. There is quite a good amount of coursework-half page summaries due everyday and two papers. I definitely appreciated that paper specifications and expectations are clearly presented prior. I definitely would recommend him !
Professor Yount is awesome I'm taking his class now! He gives you a great outlook on philosophy and is very helpful to his students and the class if just fun to be in overall but his papers are hard but you can o well in the class as long as you pay attention
His classes are fun and interactive. The professor himself is a very animated guy who's. I would heavily recommend him, just don't expect any easy A, you're working for this one.
I love Dr. Yount! He is fun and interactive! I took every one of his classes because he was that amazing! I always recommend him to everyone needing a philosophy credit!
Dr. Yount is an eccentric professor who lives and breathes philosophy. His class consists of reading passages and writing summaries with topic papers and debates in between. He is clear about what he expects of his students and very willing to help. I enjoyed this class because of Dr. Yount's energy and knowledge. Oh and Monty Python clips!
Alright, so I was never really into school. This guy is awesome, and that says a lot. He is adorable in the way that he has a strong passion for philosophy, and his phd also shows for it. Any school would be honored to have this guy teaching philosophy, because he honestly cares for his students. Also he does cute theatrical examples of things.
Awesome teacher and class! The text book is necessary to pass. The teacher is really helpful and insightful, and he also adds quite a bit of humor :). If you do not like reading and writing, stear clear. It's all you do all semester.
Dave Yount was an awesome professor! I found his class very interesting and fun. I felt this class really opened my mind about a lot of things. He is very clear on what he expects on assignments and papers, and is willing to help. I would definitely take another class of his if I have the chance.
This class was a lot of fun, and well worth taking. You will learn a lot, and it might be a lot of work, but it well worth it.
Yount's class was not easy but it helped me figure out that I am not interested in Philosophy.
Great guy, will help you if you are willing to meet with him. A little hard to understand at times with his jokes. Hey but its better than a borrowing teacher! Will have to read everyday for class.
Very funny and cares about his job not only as a job but also wants to see his students succeed.
He talks very fast, but you get used to it - He should have done stand-up comedy. Pretty quirky humor, but funny. An assignmentreading every class meeting, but doing so forces you to know the material to discuss in class. Well put together and debates provoke deep thinking. I'd take his classes again.
Dave Yount is quite honestly one of the best professors I've ever had! The material and reading is quite tough, but he is very thorough and will try to help you understand the material the best he can. There are 30+ Homework assignments, but they're quite short. Very entertaining professor, I would highly recommend him for PHI 101!
The man is a very intelligent person he knows his philosophers from Socrates to John Rawls. See him during office hours if you want to chat about life or needing help with any of the readings from the textbook. In summation Dr. Yount's philosophical knowledge and personal experience helped me become critical thinker.
He expects you to participate in class but as soon as you start speaking he cuts you off. The papers are confusing! He's not funny but tries to be. And he can never tell grades until the semester is over, so there's no catching up before the grading period ends.
Dr. Yount is clearly a subject matter expert. He lectured, we sat there. If he asks a question and someone tries to respond, he cuts them off and takes back over immediately. Confusing to follow, constantly interrupting himself. I took no notes from his lectures. You write at least 1 paper every class, so a LOT of homework. Nice guy, yucky teacher.
Dr. Yount assigns an assignment every class. He also talks the entire class period and some . He is very knowledgeable about philosophy . However, when he talks it only makes you more confused .
Perhaps the problem with the class was trying to cram it into 50 minutes. Spending the class period reading student's questions about the article we had just read seemed like a huge waste of class time considering a lot of the questions don't have easy answers. Doing an article summary every class period seemed like a bit much as well.
Took him for phil101. Good selection of readings, good incentives to engage with the material. Knows what he's talking about, and good at explaining. Strongly recommended if you have any interest in Plato.
I really enjoyed my class with Yount, he is a really funny guy, and he had two major papers in this class, after not doing well on my first paper he provided good feedback and was available to meet to discuss my second paper and I did significantly better on the second paper, a great teacher! Really cares about the students success.
Professor Yount is one of the better philosophy teachers I have had over the years. He allows the students to dominate the debate, interjecting prompting questions and factual information. The textbook articles are interesting and to the point, and the summaries he requires are not demanding. I looked forward to the days I had his class.
Yount assigns a summary article due EVERY class period, so be prepared to read. You will spend the entire class listening to him talk (pretty fast, I might add), and the powerpoints are not accessible outside of class. There are three big papers due and he grades on a four-point system, so if you drop below an A it will be hard to get it back up.
David Yount is a nice guy, but not a good professor! He talks the entire 50 minutes of lecture extremely fast and scatters from thought to thought. He does not take the time to explain the material to students. I did not learn anything in this class. If you ask any questions, he cuts you off! His essays were difficult. I do not recommend this class
This guy loves his philosophy. He really is passionate about what he does. He talks a lot and quickly so listen good. Article summary from textbook was due every class but they aren't that hard. 3 large papers. He is also available for questions and discussions after class. If you are majoring in philosophy this is a teacher you want.
Dr. Yount was awesome! He is super willing to meet outside class whenever you have questions about any assignment. If you put in the necessary time and effort for every assignment and ask him questions, you will earn an A in his class. His class requires a lot of work, but philosophy is supposed to require a lot of work. Yount does an amazing job!
Incredible professor, his teachings were life changing and inspired me to continue taking philosophy classes year on year. I had him my first semeseter several years ago, I am now at ASU and I have not gone a semester without coursework in philosophy. Philosophy is the mother of science, and David Yount has made a science of teaching Philosophy.
Taking his PHI 101 class helped me realize I wanted to pursue philosophy. This was major since nothing peeked my interest enough till this class. He is highly intelligent in his field which means that there is the potential to learn a lot from him and I feel like I did. He is always open to help any students in his office hours too.
He is the fastest speaker ever and could really improve on his lecture. He assigns a moderate homework but sitting through is lectures is too much sometimes because its hard to understand when he's talking so fast. Overall 10/10 would not recommend. He does have good humor though.
So first off I dont dislike many teachers but this out of all of them I really am dislike this one, he doesnt post his grades on canvas so you never know what you receive till the end of the semester and wont drop his class because people would if they knew there grade, also he talks SO much you cant even get a word in, dont expect to learn
There is an assignment due every day (not exaggerating), which is a page long summary of a few pages in the textbook. There are three major papers and an article presentation, that every student must present. The lectures are very boring, mandatory attendance, not allowed to be late (Strict on his attendance policy).
There is a summary due almost every class but its only half a page & very easy. He does talk a lot & its fast but he is very smart and funny. He loves talking after class & really loves helping you understand topics & assignments. He also offers editing for papers which makes it very easy to do well. Participate and use his help and its an easy A.
Yount is an okay prof but he speaks so unclearly.. All we do is write summaries and then go over the summaries in class. There is debates about every 2 weeks and those are fun but the majority of the class is presentations by students. He also doesn't post grades until the very end so you never know what you have in the class.
Great teacher! Be aware that you will need to do your readings and write article summaries turning them in every class! They are short and as long as you do them and have some sort of common sense you will get an A. I would recommend daily attendance as it counts for participation points unless you have an excused absence with proof!
Dave is by the book when it comes to attendance. Lectures are interesting. Lots of reading and small paragraph papers. He does not expect you to understand philosophy but he like to see you try. Easy class to pass
This is an easy A class. If you need a HU class, take this one! NO TESTS! All you do is write short summaries for every class, 3 papers instead of the exam, and one short "presentation" (reading your summary out loud). Dr. Yount is great and he will respect your opinion on every matter!
This was the worst class of my college experience so far. He would only post his lectures after people started posting their summary of the readings, which meant if you don't take the initiative you might only have a couple hours to watch the lecture and write an opinion piece before the due date. Sometimes rude and just not very professional.
His class was great until the end of the semester which ruined the whole class for me. He waits until its the end of the semester to put in zeros for things not turned in so you cant even fix them. I had an A all semester and I missed two days and at the end I got an F. I would have dropped this class if I had seen the grades before the end.
His guidelines for papers were like 7 pages long and super vague, if you didn't follow all of his vague instructions perfectly you wouldn't get a good grade even if it was well executed. You wouldn't get credit for assignments you did if you didn't hand them in in-person, even if you were sick (unless you had a doctor's note).
The topics talked about in this class were always very interesting, but the homework was too much. He would assign 2-4 summaries per week from readings that were up to 10 pages long. There was no tests, but you do have to do 3 big papers and a presentation. They weren't too hard to do, but they did include a lot of reading, elaborating, and time.
Dr. Yount was one of my favorite professors I had at MCC. He was very clear with what we needed and what was required of us in the classroom. During discussions, he was very helpful with writing useful feedback on rough drafts.
Dr. Y is very passionate, enthusiastic, kind, and relaxed. Weekly class discussions, participation matters! Weekly readings/summaries, textbook required. Can feel like a lot but the workload is very doable. Three papers, provides lots of feedback and guidance. You will have to "present" 2-3 times but it is very low stress. I highly recommend!
TAKE THIS CLASS! Professor Yount was my favorite professor I've had at MCC so far, and this class was also one of the most interesting and engaging classes I've ever taken. I do want to preface that the second phase of the class is very reading strenuous and can take a lot of time. This class taught me many valuable things and was very enjoyable!
I thought Davy Yount was an amazing professor. He really made the class enjoyable and the conversations you will have are really fun. You will have to read and write summaries on 4 articles a week. The class was really fun and you will have a lot of fun conversations. Very good and fun professor. I would absolutely take more of his classes.
We didn't have any homework the first few weeks. Later in the semester, he published an outline that would show our readings and homework. The homework was just a summary of what we read (about half a page). He was really understanding and let us turn in rough drafts for our essays (3 essays, no tests or final). Very easy grader. One extra credit.
Philosophy professors can be difficult, but Dr. Yount is a phenomenal teacher. He genuinely cares about you, and wants you to learn. The reading is interesting, and the papers, while rigorous, are fairly graded. If you put in just a little effort, you can both learn and have fun in this class.
I chose this as a last-minute credit, but I am glad. The assignments were simple/straightforward. The only way you could fail this class is if you did not do the work/participate. The professor is very passionate about his lectures, get ready to listen. I would recommend this class as your credit if you work in healthcare/pursuing the field.
It is a simple, straightforward class to pass and will answer any questions you may have.
Professor Yount makes this class engaging and enjoyable. The readings can be time-consuming, but his feedback and support are invaluable. unstuck AI has been a lifesaver for study prep. An easy A if you stay on top of the work.
Dr. Yount is an amazing professor. The reading can be time-consuming but expands the class' impact. Yount dismantles the intimidating scope of philosophy papers with extremely clear, detailed instructions. If you take this class, please submit drafts! Yount's feedback is guaranteed to leave you better off. You'll have fun discussions, too!
I loved taking this class. You definitely learn new perspectives. He's really open to feedback, I recommend his office hours strongly. If you want an A just give him your rough draft, he tells you exactly what to do to get 100%
The class is very straightforward, all the assignments/papers have examples and detailed instructions. There was only 3 papers throughout the course for my class. It is time consuming because of the articles given, but not to difficult. Attendance is mandatory, but he's also understanding.
He was an amazing professor. He was excellent at explaining our readings, and he answered any and all of the questions we had. I would 100% take another class with him. He is straightforward, he clearly states the criteria for homework/papers. My advice for taking this course would be to do the readings and papers on time and not overthink them.
