Good lecture, done with a sense of humor. Tests were a bit hard.
Tests were hard, but he's a good lecturer.
the final was indeed ridiculous, but lectures, hw, and labs weren't that bad. chem sucks less with zax

Chem793 was "a nice course screwed up!" with Zax.
I am very surprised to see such a professor at Cornell. Cornell is an outstanding institution and should not allow such ineptitude to permeate a fine department. He does no research and does not know what he is talking about.
I guess he's an intelligent guy...but seems rather full of himself. Needs to tone it down a bit.
not very helpful and has a condenscending attitude toward the whole class.
"I suspect" that Zax may care less about his students than he cares for a broken beaker. He should subject his procedures for running the class to some error analysis. The CO2 didn't work. The fats lab doesn't seem to be working either. Lectures could be half as long if he didn't use so many words!
Zax thinks that he is the most eloquent guy in the world, but really his wordy lab writeups are full of distracting grammatical/syntactical errors. His labs are SO sloppy. Keeps telling us to do our work "like we were getting paid for it". You ARE getting paid to do this and you suck! So many fine profs at Cornell Chem, why ruin 300 with this moron

Very wordy and confusing tests. Avoid him if you want to keep your GPA!
Zax has no idea what he's talking about. spends all his time explaining what he won't be teaching, tell awful jokes.
What can i say... Zax makes things harder than they are.
Perhaps the most useless lecturer in existence. His jokes are tasteless; his notes have nothing to do with the class. 5 minutes into the lecture, you'd ask yourself, "WHY THE HELL AM I STILL HERE?" If that doesn't say enough, he also likes to smirk at his students while they're taking the ridiculous prelims, knowing they will fail miserably.
Must be the most useless soul living on God's Green Earth. Spends lectures ranting about the history of chemistry rather than chemistry itself. He must have an inferiority complex or something, he talks to us as if we are dog crap. I have never run into a more worthless teacher in my life.
prelims test reading comprehension more than actual chemistry. the textbook is a saving grace because lectures are pointless.
Yuck. I do not recommend Zax. He seems like he's a really nice guy, and I think that I could approach him with questions fairly easily but its the only lecture that I've skipped more than twice. Boring and pretty much useless lectures. No review sessions, prelims are horrible and you are very unprepared, even if you study what he teaches.
Zax reminds me of a kid that has no friends and he likes to rant about Nobel Prize winners. If you didn't take AP Chem in high school good luck!
Not a great lecturer. Doesn't cover material that appears on the prelim. The prelims aren't terrible (the final however, was fairly difficult). Textbook is great though and is basically the only thing you need to do alright. Overall, course is pretty easy, but Zax is not organized and you probably won't do any worse if you skip every lecture.
Helpful when I went to office hours, but the lectures were almost completely pointless, and the exams were basically tests in making stuff up and hoping it made sense. Half the class stopped going to lectures by the end.
For the most part, Zax's exams are measurements of God-given Chemistry brilliance, and studying is pointless. The textbook was a savior for this class, as lectures were pointless and the overall class attendance reflected this. It seemed like Zax would rather be doing research than lecturing.
terrible teacher, please do not take him if you have the option...he is a terrible lecturer and the prelims never cover material that was covered in class...
not a very goos lecturer. all you can do is read the text and sit in on some of the 207 lectures. also, no practice prelims for this course, so try stealing some problem sets from your 207 buddies for practice. prelims and final very hard
Zax isn't too bad. Lecture is essentially the book but more confusing. Labs are easy, tests are a curve ball, though not impossible. It's clear that Zax doesn't want to be there, but he knows you don't either so everything is ok! Overall I'd rather take this course than 207 (which is much harder and you have to do lab write ups).
After taking CHEM 209 I felt I'm fooled... The lectures are not that bad, but unfortunately Prof.Z does not like including what he said in the exams. Wish you good luck if you really really want to take his course.
My suggestion if you are required to take this course? Wait until it gets taken over by a new professor. Being one of the few people who actually attended lecture and came in with a really good background, the prelims were still pretty tough thanks to Zax's mean-lowering exam questions that seem to have nothing to do with what we're learning
Bad prof, clearly does not want to teach. Avoid taking this course in the fall so you can avoid this guy! Some other better prof teaches in the spring; Zax teaches in the fall
Easily the worst professor I have ever had, and I've had my fair share of bad teachers. This guy has no desire to hand his knowledge to his students, he's too full of himself and his previous research to even care about his students learning. Don't bother going to lecture, reading the book and going to AEW will save you in this course.
Needs to work on clarity, and making labs more relevant. Also needs to understand that no one takes chemistry by choice, everyone is there because its required.
Does not care about students. Tricky exams with many application questions.
Zax removed all of my interest in chemistry. If he spent as much time actually teaching as puffing out his chest then we would possibly learn something. And his incapability at both teaching and demonstrations degrades my perception of Cornell.
Very helpful, great teaching style and wit. Readily available for assistance on otherwise complicated concepts. He was also voted best prof by the students for the past two years. Highly recommended!
Unwilling to help students during office hours. Dodges questions and acts condescendingly toward students. His tests have very low means. If you haven't taken AP Chemistry in high school, then you will have a lot of trouble passing this course.
Demolished my interest in chemistry. Taught useless information that was not even related to chemistry and expected you to know the information.
If you like lectures that go on random tangents that have nothing to do with the tests, Professor Zax is the teacher for you! Worst at Cornell thus far. If you have no chemistry experience, you will likely have a very difficult time.
Zax is an amazing individual. His ability to confuse is perhaps second to none. His ability to crush the soul is also unparalleled. Since he can't be avoided, he must be endured...
Rather useless professor.
He is a good teacher who is willing to answer questions. I learned many things from the cores and it stimulated my interest in the subject greatly.
Definitely not the best teacher, prelim means were always low, but didn't have to do much work to get above the mean on everything. Zax acts like he doesn't want to be there during class and his demonstrations NEVER worked. Didn't get much chemistry knowledge from him, but overall the class is boring, but not too hard.
Horrible teacher
Worst professor I've ever had. Managed to confuse the entire lecture hall almost every class.
Very disappointing that almost every science related major will have to take 2070. Tests take 2/3 of the alotted time to comprehend and have little based on what he actually lectured on. No understanding of his students knowledge level before or after the course. This is coming from someone who went to lecture and did pretty well in the class.
Terribly teacher. Arrogant, annoying, and overall, useless. I learned nothing from this man.
This class was brutal. There are so many assignments due for a four credit class and there really needs to be more lecture time. Zax also was very confusing and his exams were completely off topic sometimes.
Dave Zax is possibly the most arrogant, condescending, and rude man I've ever had the misfortune to meet. He acts as if students are appalling pieces of filth and don't deserve anything more than disdain and hatred. I wish no other student would have to endure the unfortunate circumstances that are his class.
Most confusing lecture prof ever... the times that I could manage to stay awake. The material covered in lecture was not covered in the homework problems. And the final was ridiculous.
Horrible teacher. Horrible Experience. Unhelpful. Arrogant. Mean.
This man is a TERRIBLE professor. He doesn't really know what he is talking about and gets corrected often during lecture, especially by his superior, Prof. Lee. In order to do well, one must teach themselves. Consider this class to be "auto-tutorial". Lectures don't correlate to masterinchemistry.com work, written homework, or exams.
He is a horrible teacher. The TA's seemed to be better at teaching than he is. The final exam was a killer!
Horrible teacher. The exams were unpredictable - the means were either really high or ridiculously low. Probably one of the worst college professors I have ever had.
DAVEEEEEEEEEEE! This man is the epitome of what a teacher should be. He obviously loves his work, his family, and his religion. I wish I could be Dave.
He tries to teach concepts the way they were discovered (i.e. explaining how things like orbitals are derived mathematically) when it would be clearer and easier to learn the material if he just presented facts. Don't ask questions in class, he talks down to people a lot. Go to TAs and tutors with problems, they are very helpful.
Dry, teaches inaccurate models without indicating they are inaccurate until the very end. So, a lot of time is wasted when it could be spent focusing on things that work.
Not a bad professor, just a bit condescending towards students. Honestly, the material was really easy and there is no reason you should do bad in the course since you have TAs and whatnot to help you.
Finds a way to 'explain' concepts in the single most confusing way. Lectures tend to wander, but can provide useful examples; sometimes will give away a test answer. He's a bit of egoist, but play into it and he'll be nicer to you.
Zax isn't as bad as everyone says... yeah the final was pretty bad but it was curved, so it doesn't really matter. The prelims were very fair and easy if you were prepared. Not the greatest teacher, but the help was there if necessary.
This man is awful. Don't ask questions in lecture unless you want him to pulverize you in front of every person in class. Don't go to office hours, he'll just do the same thing in private. In exams, he seems to delight in watching tears run slowly down students faces (true story). Labs and exams have zero to do with lecture. Even my TA hated him.
He is a horrible professor. Most likely the worst professor at cornell. Every single person i know absolutely hates his lectures as they are utterly useless. His prelims and finals are completely unfair. The problem sets are long a ridiculous.
His office hours and not great and he is a bit arrogant. Overall the rumors are over blown, he isn't the absolute worse.
One of the worst professors at Cornell. Dry lectures, bad at teaching, and unwilling to give clarification when asked.
Zax's lectures were clear, HW was helpful and tests were fair. Some test means were on the low end, but the thing with chemistry is that the lectures give you a basis of knowledge but it is up to you to apply this knowledge on practice problems. Know your stoichiometry well because it is an easy concept that they can write tricky questions on
The tests were very fair. Although the final may have been difficult, if one studies they should be fine. I had not taken AP Chem in high school but still managed an A
Zax is an amazing teacher. Honestly, the rumors about him are way over exaggerated. Chem is a subject that you usually get or don't, but all in all, if you do the hw and pay attention in class you should be fine. He may be rude in office hours, but hey, there are so many other TA's you can go to if you really need the help.
The test questions were similar to the problem set questions... so in terms of fairness, what else needs to be said? I ended up with an A- for what it's worth.
Although he lacks a pleasant personality, he wasn't a bad prof. His lectures were somewhat challenging to follow but actually did explain things. I relied heavily on our book AND other chem books and did A LOT of practice problems in order to do well on the prelim and final. Hard work, but worth it.
Not as bad as he is rumored to be. His homework problems were really hard and took a long time but often we were not tested on the harder material. Because of this his tests seemed annoying easy because we spent a lot of time studying and learning harder things that weren't on them. I never talked to him in person or read the book and I got a B+.
The only thing I can say is "Avoid this man like the plague." He's very arrogant, doesn't care about students, and even revels in students suffering with the unnecessary difficulty of his assignments and exams. Stay away.
Honestly, Zax is one of the crappiest professors I've ever come in contact with. He's arrogant, demeaning, and expects you to fully understand ridiculously complex subjects that only the kids who got fives on the AP exam have a slight understanding of. This class sucks, don't even waste your time going to lecture. You rely so much on the book.
I guess the people saying he wasn't so bad are the ones who took AP Chem and got a 5 or something. The last time I took regents Chem was 2009, so maybe that's my fault. Anyway, terrible class, over analyzes material 'til it makes no sense, went to all lectures, didn't help, read the book completely, tests were totally different. Worst ever.
I took this course in Fall 2013 with not prior AP chem (only regents chem in sophomore year). I got an A in the class but mostly because I went to the support class every week. The concepts were simple enough but Zax doesnt always explain everything in the allotted time. His lectures are better than Abruna's and I personally liked his exams better.
Makes topics harder to understand than they should be. Prelim and homework questions are hard and not directly from the book and hard to study for. Material covered was not that hard but he did not teach it very clearly.
Terrible professor. He is even rude to other professors and TAs. It's so unfortunate that almost every science major has to take this course
He is a worse professor than Abruna. He presents the basic concepts in class, but expect students to know things to the very detail for homework and exams. His homework was unnecessarily difficult and not good for prelim preparation. He is rude and proud. The only way to do well is to study everything yourself and do a lot of problems.
Ugh... Zax. He's just a really difficult test-giver. Doesn't seem friendly although I've never actually tired going to his office hours specifically. Enjoyed his lectures for the most part. It's not his fault chem 2070 is designed to weed people out. Be prepared to work hard.
Very confusing lectures. Does not wait for the class to understand him. Tests are extremely difficult.
Totally unapproachable and tough, but the stigma around Zax and 2070 is a bit overblown. I got an A in the class without taking AP Chem and while I worked for it, it's not necessary to go to office hours every week. Prelims are tough, but it's chemistry, so the means are gonna be low and the curve will help you.
David Zax just has a chip on his shoulders. It seems that he is not only rude to students that approach him for help, but he is also horrible to the Department's grad students and other faculty members. Unfortunately, CHEM 2070 is a "weed out" class and a common requirement for many majors; so, it's either this or summer schoolchoose summer school
All of the hype about Zax is completely exaggerated. He's nowhere near as cruel or intimidating as previous ratings state. That being said, his lectures are way too complicated, and his exams are tough (but not unfair). If you're an incoming freshman worried about this class, don't fear. The material is manageable if you read the textbook.
He is a great professor, and makes sure that students who need help can receive it. He is informative, and he tries to make this class fun.
His lectures don't relate to any of his homework sets and are very sporadically taught in general. His lectures are often hard to follow, even if you know what you are doing. He has also describe the reason behind some chemistry to just be "magic." Questions during lecture have been answered with quick responses that don't clarify what was asked.
Prof Zax's lectures are extremely unclear and often painful to attend. His power points look similar to something a 6th grader would create, he's not concise, and he often comes across as very condescending towards his students. Just read the textbook and do the problem sets. Labs are easy, prelims are not - "designed so no one would finish"...
Lectures were absolutely terrible and because of that it's extremely hard to do the homeworks and tests. Impossible to pass the class without reading the book yourself and viewing Khan Academy videos. Would NOT recommend.
Zax is unfortunately one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He has literally described concepts as magic and makes the simplest things confusing. His demos usually have nothing to do with the lecture of the day and he often messes them up. I generally enjoy chemistry but this was a very poor class.
I thought I used to like chemistry. His lectures are incredibly unclear unless you already solidly know the material. His tests are tough, no doubt about that. Lectures seemed to be unrelated to homework or labs--studying the homework and textbooks are the key to passing. Was fairly condescending in class. Would not recommend.
Everything I learned was from the textbook. I should have skipped 90 percent of the lectures.
Terrible professor
Lectures were completely useless
Purposely makes exams impossible to finish, lecture is useless, not helpful whatsoever
Was extremely approachable throughout the course and usually available and willing to discuss any challenges/questions about lab. Vagueness in person and in handouts were sometimes confusing, but more often than not, also challenged me to learn more. His lectures went well beyond what was required for labs (apt for a class full of chemists).
he's mean. super snarky. igor was rough. he was always unnecessarily vague.
