Gives sufficient amount of time on long assignments. Really knows his material. Semi hard, but great teacher. Makes you think. You learn a lot. Caring, explicit and patient. Makes you think.
He is very hard... to listen to. Absolutely annoying! If I could do it all over again I would not. This guy is self absorbed and cocky.
He was inspiring. Hard but inspiring. I wouldnt recommend him to a student who is not willing to work. there are about 3-4 essays-huge final paper.
He's great! very inspiring and knowlegeable. The class is fun and you won't regret of taking his calss. highly recommended!
if you take him, u will be sorry!
he makes u think a lot and always keeps updated on film and contemporary events,so if u like that, take his class. If u're really trying 2 learn how 2 write an analytical paper,he's not too helpful.I wrote based on my knowledge from Eng 1 (Mario Padilla)

An instructor that teaches with his passions. If u want an easy A, don't take him. If u're truly persistent in learning, u can surely benefit a lot from him. One "A" from him is worth ten from the others.
a wonderfully spirited man. not only a interesting individual but a great educator as well. the hardest i ever worked for a grade (6pg min)but i loved every sentence of it.
Worst teacher i have ever had! You can learn about entertainment and news, but not how to learn to write good essays. Boring lectures. Would not recommend!
Fantastic instructor, but VERY difficult grader. Great guy though, and you'll learn something, even though you won't be getting an Easy A.
Pretty good teacher. A bit of a stickler when it comes to essays, but he knows his stuff. I got the impression that he'd rather be teaching cinema, though...
Nice guy and a free thinker who encourages free thinking. Seems to have a slight tick--is it tourettes, or are the students getting to him?
The whole semester I had him I wanted to shave off his moustache, cuz it's growing into his mouth, it's annoying! Very hard to get an A, gives anal quizzes and research paper, and if you wanna work, take this class. Dont take if you wanna easy A
Guy is a total jerk. Grades like a jerk, talks like a jerk. Don't dare disagree with him or you fail. Class makes no sense, unless you like random thoughts with no coherent train of thought. Take the class if you dont mind a dismal grade.
By far, the most entertaining English class I have ever taken. Really a joy to attend his class, and the way he taught "To Kill A Mockingbird" completely changed the way I look at life and how I treat people.
Annoying! He's extremely annoying. He gives out an essay a week and even if he thinks your essay was good, you probably, still won't get an "A".If you miss the class a few times, he'll blacklist you and you most likely won't pass. If you're the teacher's pet type, you may have a chance at maybe a "B
A class act; best english professor/teacher I have ever had. Eloquent and passionate in his lectures and about the stories/books examined in class. Engages the students and teaches them how to analyze and interpret what they are reading. Loved every lecture, looked forward to every class.
Interesting lectures. He's passionate and is never borring.Explains literature through class discutions. Though you can never know what he thinks while listening to you:)So far I have an A.
Class is interesting, he knows what he's talking about and is passionate about it. He is a good teacher, but a hard grader. If your writing style doesn't coincide with his, you're likely to get a lower grade. You MUST be on time, and almost never miss class, or else he blacklists you.
this professor is biased. there were three students in my class who didn't attend public school and he gave them crap for it! He always made them easy targets.
He's got to teach the same class every semester and is just looking for the few students each semester who appreciate fine literature as much as he does...not to mention that he could make the course so much more difficult then he does.
I really enjoyed his class. It was fun, exciting, but a little too early in the morning. I really recommend people to take him for english 1 because you won't get confused and he's really easy to talk to if you need it.
When I first took his class I thought he was very arrogant, but as each class progressed I became fully away that he knew his subject very well and is passionate about the classes he teach. He makes the classes interesting and thought provoking about the literature we are discussing. Very helpful.
One of the BEST lecturers I've ever experienced! Never be late to class or you'll miss crucial information. You'll never get bored with the material because of how he analyzes it. VERY SUPPORTIVE PROFESSOR! Excellent choices in literature coverage. You sit in a circle and he calls on you, too.
bad teacher and eveyone thinks he's great
Mr. Zehr is a great teacher. He is very animated and passionate about writing. He makes the class fun with the disscusion we have. But he does assign alot of writing assignments. If you're willing to put in some time and hard work he will help. I'm a student with a learning disability in writing and
I would avoid. I am an excellent student, and highly motivated, but this guy just doesn't like to give 'A's'. I was expecting a challenge, but he provides little guidence and expects you to know structure and form. All he teaches is argument. Better grades on papers that appeal to his narrow views.
A great teacher for all three classes. He made learning fun and interesting. He made me want to come to class everyday. He's very passionate about his classes and really knows his subject. His classes didn't come easy for me, but he was very helpful and patient. I think by far he's the best teacher at SMC. Don't come to class late.
MrZehr is a grat teacher.
He is very self absorbed and seems to be more receptive to papers that parrot his views. If you want an A don't think --just regugitate what he says. I could not stand his class and would not recommend it.
Seems way more difficult than he is...helped me get into UCLA, but so will SMC. Not as bad as everyone makes him out to be, just know Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS, but so should every undergrad
If you want to do well in his class, agreee with everything he says, even when his opinions contrdict each other. He's pretty arrogant and unhelpful. You really don't learn much. You'll be better off with someone else.
he made my fall in love with world literature. he is a good professor, he comes off arrogant but he cares. great class!
I thought that Zehr seemed to really enjoy teaching. He had discussions over essays that he assigned during the previous class, and those were really interesting. They forced you to look at writing in an entirely new way. He assigns a lot of essays to write, and expects "brilliance." If you're up for the challenge, he is a good teacher ... and very organized.
Greatest professor you could possibly have. He cares tremendously about you. He will not let you get away with lousy work, but if you go to talk to him he will be patient and show you how to do the really good work that you should be doing.
I really enjoyed his class because we constantly discussed issues that were and are still going on in this country. After his class, you start thinking more critically and your writing techniques really improve. He is very helpful if you need to talk to him.
He is a very nice man. Always avaliable in office. Dry, sarcastic humor which some do not get, hence the negative reviews. Learned alot in his class. Be an adult & take personal responsibility. Wants you to really learn & improve your writing. Intimidating at first (big, strong looking man) but really is a smart, kind hearted human being. Great!
His reading quizzes are ridiculously easy and there are very few. His essay topics are a breeze and he is an easy grader. Quite amiable and cheerful, too. He's quite a character; you'll really like him.
He is truly an amazing and awesome professor. Knows a lot about everything, especially English 1, 2, and 4. Makes the class fun. I really learned a lot. A few quizzes, which are easy if you do the reading. If need help his office is always open. By far the best teacher at SMC.
Absolutely engaging. Runs the class in discussion groups. Good if it fits your style. It definitely fit mine. Manageable assignments and final. Took him during the short semester and got an A. Read atleast the Sparknotes for the reading quizzes. But you need to understand the material for the paper.
This guy really thinks a lot of himself and has questionable morals--very modern, I guess, for an older guy. Maybe it's a post-midlife crises. But I think this attitude interferes with the quality of his teaching which does not seem fresh and relevent to me at all.
this teacher is so into himself its crazy. his grading is totally not fair coming from one of the lucky few who got a good grade. he gives stupid easy quizes that you just need to read for and a written final. at first he seems exciting but that soon dies.
he starts off a little condescending, but you get over it quickly. very intelligent and more than willing to help you with your writing in his class or any. attend class, put some thought in your papers, and you'll have no problem getting an A.
This professor is a cool guy. Very passionate about what he teaches He's overqualified for what he's teaching and is definitely underpaid. Makes learning fun, challanging and his discussions are thought provoking. Keep up with the reading and make sure you do close reading and you'll do fine on the quizzes. Very helpful and patient and his offi
So he makes everyone talk about the readings so he won't actually have to do any of the teaching himself. A grade of "C" in his class is really his version of a D/F. It's a fun class, if you care to learn from one another. Oh yeah, if you disagree with him...you're wrong! He thinks he's wild, but he's actually the opposite.
He is really nice and understandable. His tests are easy. Read the stories beforehand. Major drawbacks: talks alot and forms group circles (when students start to disappear from the class). Besides that he is really easy.
He is easy and helpful. He is way too talkative and boring (after a while). I think you could probably get away with turning in a paper late (turn it in a.s.a.p). Also, someone in my class didn't show up for the midterm and he allowed that person to take it later. (figures)
No joke- the worst teacher I ever had. Pompus, full of himself and a controll freak. Has no intrest in student oppinions, just wants you to echo his. He is very boring, redundant, and likes power games. Will cut you off if he disagrees. Take Pope or Edelmann instead- much nicer people. Zehr will prob. die sand + alone because no one can stand him.
definitely a different kind of teaching style. he has a huge ego and therefore always thinks that he is right. however, he is helpful when it comes to writing. i learned alot from this class. you must do the reading in order to get a good grade
Zehr is great, one of my fav. teachers at SMC. He's intelligent and funny. The class is well structured, you always know what to expect. You write 3-4 essays and he's there if you need help. I highly recommend him. Just do the reading and ask for help if you need it and you'll do fine.
I took Prof. Zehr for every class he taught because of his passion and love for what he does, it made me want to teach english
No Comments
EHH he's okay. he calls on people and expects them to think just like him. cuts you off if he doesnt like your opinion, somewhat irritating. he grades fair and understands it's not an easy class and doesnt overwhelm you with work.
Zehr had a profound effect on me in regard to my passion and fondness for English. After taking his class, and virtually falling in love with his methods and the stories I read, I changed my major to English. I RECOMMEND Zehr's class, and Corn Flakes for breakfast, EXCESSIVELY! P.S. In regard to the Corn Flakes...try with milk.
very nice professor. took him for englih 1 and 2. very helpful. Go to his office hours and he wil really take time to listen to you and help you with whatever you need help with. He will go over your papers with you and gives you a chance to rewrite all papers and get a higher grade. I started out with C:s on my papers but ended up with an A. He al
i love professor Zehr. im a chemistry major and english isnt my best subject but this man... ill tell you this man is a genius. such a wonderful man indeed. i HIGHLY reccomend him. i was so impressed with his style of teaching that i decided to take him again for english, him benig the lovely and helpful man that he is. mrs. Zehr is one lucky gal.
I started with a C+. I ended up getting A in the class. I'm in an international student. But I don't recommend him. I studied so hard, and I had a powerful grammar knowledge before the class. He never compliments your ideas. After you talk about your idea about something, he makes you feel stupid sometimes. I was depressed all the term. Beware...
i had a lot of problems with him b/c he ALWAYS has to have the last word and be right. but it didn't affect my grade, and bottom line is he is a very sweet guy with good stories and a good teacher if you let him be. see him in office hours, he's even more helpful there. the class moves at a decent rate too, not TOO demanding, but still engaging
I've never been treated by a teacher in so vindictive & compassionless a way. I challenged him (respectfully) on something & was right. He slashed my next grade and treated me in a smug, sarcastic, demeaning way when I was vulnerable. Don't take him unless you're happy to be a mindless sychophant. Threaten his ego & he'll try 2 crush you like a bug!
I hate his GUTS! He is very rude and ALWAYS.. ALWAYS needs to have the last word. He never ever compliments you if you were right. He is horrible, nasty, and definetly demeaning. I HAD to drop his stupid class because I simply could not take his stupid attitude any longer. He is not hard, just annoying...AVOIDDDDDDD
SO egotistical.CANNOT stand when someone proves him wrong, will get offended and speak down to you like you are stupid.has NO rubric. rude and makes you write too many essays. he is a secret ****. he will make you regret not listening to him by doing something that seems like an accident. makes you a better essay writer, despite what he thinks.
I enjoyed his class very much. miss him already. he's A++++++++
great class highly suggest taking it
I had Dr. Zehr over the Winter session and he was great. This is not a class that you can coast in, but he is willing to help. Do the required reading, participate, and listen to what he has to say you will become a better writer and do great in his course. We started with training wheels and progressively got more independent. I highly recommend
i loved professor Zehr! He was really funny and a lot of fun so it didn't make the class boring at all. He knew how to make everything really interesting. I really enjoyed his class; he's not extremely easy to pass but he's very reasonable. Anywho, he's amesome. Don't hesitate!
Great teacher yet demanding. If you really want to improve you're writing skills take this guy! You will need to buy the book and participate in class! You write 3-4 essays plus a research paper. Fair grader and very helpful in his office hours. Highly recommended!!!!!
An awful "professor". The man is absolutely condescending. Agree with him and you're set; disagree and you're on your own. Up until I missed some days because of a problem, he was okay. When I came back, every attempt I made to answer was ignored. Horribly condescending, self-centered, and did I mention that he talks down to you? Never take him.
Mr. Zehr is a really good English teacher. If you want to learn how to write the college essay and be able to actually understand what you read, take him. I didn't find him to disagree with opinions at all. 4-5 essays and a research paper.
Definitely one of the smartest people I've ever met. Very knowledgeable also--a graduate of CSULA, he made me realize that there is genius that comes from everywhere, not just the Ivy League/UC system. I was in the Scholars class, but I'm sure it was the same curriculum as his other classes. Really goes in depth into all the readings we covered, an
Professor Zehr is an amazing teacher. He knows a lot about english and gets the whole class involved. That being said, he will call on you even if you don't raise your hand. He can be intimidating especially if you have the wrong answer. Research paper at the end of the semester. A few essays. Read the book!
He is good. Not the best. At times I just want the class to end, but over all he's good.
i never really payed attention in class. always fell asleep. seriously thought i was failing the class but then mysteriously i got a B. probably i wrote a great research paper. just always come to class and ask your neighbor to take notes for you while you snooze.
He was a tough teacher. I felt he held strong opinions and overall if you repeat what he says in your essays you should do ok but I did not enjoy the class. he favors people so make sure you get on his good side.
enjoyed class
read the material and take down notes when zehr goes over the reading that way you have some great lines for your essays. participation will enhance your understanding of the reading as well. his way of thinking about life is unbelievable.
AWFUL teacher. had to drop the class after he wouldn't let me make up a quiz i missed while hospitalized. even though i had proof. always talks about what's "cool". doesn't know how to use apostrophes correctly! hard ass about being late/attendance. don't take this class you have the ability to shut off you brain while he talks nonsense. AVOID!!
Mediocre Professor. He is arrogant and is not helpful. Rambles in class about pop culture and the sixties, and the worst part is when you go to his office for help on a paper is so strung on coffee that one has hard time following his "logic." If one must take his class just write on whatever he likes to get an A, and attendance is a must.
Very good prof, great for students who are interested in literature. I am set on majoring in English after his class. Interesting discussions, very chill, open minded, energetic and fun. Might come off as arrogant but it's not how he truly is.
first the quizzes are part of the class however missing 1 will NOT hurt you, you grade isnt contingent on them. AMAZING professor, listens and is genuinley open. super easy to pass, even if you dont do all the reading and fail all the tests. he grades on your comprhension&capacity. only regret is not doing all the reading, but life interuppted.
Mr. Zehr has a great knowledge of English and his passion definitely shows. He is very witty and can be very intimidating, so know your materials beforehand. The textbook isn't used much. If you can, save yourself the money and print it from the internet. He lets you redo essays, and this is how you get an A. Not the best but not the worst teacher.
Zehr is a bit of comp and circumstance and I see why people say he's got a bit of an ego but he absolutely knows what he's doing. I think he's a bit tough for a jc but he'll prepare you well for college. I detested him at first but he grew on me. Show up at an office hour and let him know you care, it will make a difference. Excellent teacher.
Zehr is incredibly arrogant and his class discussions are redunandant and fairly useless. We wrote a lot and read a lot (this I enjoyed) but his comments were minimal on papers and he spent lots of time in class bad mouthing his wife, or discussing himself. I don't recommend him, unless you are prepared to suck up (in which case, he's an easy A).
Professor Zehr is a fountain of wisdom and incomparable intelligence. His vision, ideals, and constant questionings of blindly accepted truths is what separates him from the common man. He may be construed as arrogant but that arrogance is derived from a state of satire. Take his class if you wish to broaden your own wisdom, you wont regret it.
I took Zehr for English 1 and 2. Here's the deal: If you're intelligent and enjoy being challenged, take him. If you're only in school to get the A and to collect your financial aid check, take someone else. He's full of energy, and to those who don't understand where he comes from, he will come off as arrogant. I got two A's. Loved his class.
exactly what the person below me said. his classes are full of energy and he really helps you break the readings down. LOVED HIM! challenging but definitely helps you become a better writer. best prof.
Great Professor. All his notes about essays and readings are just what you need to write the essays he gives you. Try and you will be rewarded. Best english teacher i had in my life. Take him for scholars or regular. Amazing! :))
He's a great professor. His classes are always interesting. He returns papers back, within a week. For most of the papers he allows re-writes. You definitely have to do the readings or else he'll call you on it. Basically a couple papers, in class-writings, discussions, and a final at the end. He also is very helpful with the research paper he assi
Zehr is one of those teachers who will seriously make an impact on your writing styles in college! Take him if you want to learn how to write! I was one of those students who in high school would get a B on my essays but in his scholars Eng 1 class im aceing. Why? He's not easy but not really hard either but he's really useful! GO TO HIS OFFICE HOU
Zehr is misunderstood. He's a great guy who cares about those students who try hard in his class. Be sure to participate in his class, he likes that and it can make an impact on your grade if your borderline. Go to his office hours if you're unsure about your intro for your essays...this will steer you in the right direction so that u can get an A!
Zehr is one of my favorite professors. With him you will fall in love with literature!
Eng 2:Zehr is a very good professor who actually cares about his students. Has a strange English/ American accent despite being from CA. Fully recommend him. Easy Grader. If you approach him for help with your essays he will love you. Little homework. Easy quizzes on assigned readings. Easy A and also a very interesting class.
If you have a hard time expressing yourself, this guy will definitely help you. You have to be up to date on your assignments if you want to pass. Totally recommend him if you like to read; he chooses very interesting topics and discussions are very informational. Be ready to answer when he picks on you, or else you'll feel pretty stupid.
I liked Zehr. He's a smart guy. His papers are hard because you essentially pick the topic and he decides if it's good. He is well rounded in the arts, but mildly patronizing in the way he talks. He talks a lot about the superiority of Europe, and how everything is better in France. This only annoyed me because I dislike the French. If you are from Europe, he will take an immediate shining to you. Don't arrive late and don't miss class. If you participate, he will acknowledge your effort.
One of the best out there, fun/important readings that are relevant in the world. Very clear on what he wants. Cares about students thoughts, office hours help. 3 essays, some in class writing on articles at home, and 1 research paper. Got an A b/c I tried...not a lot of hw and chill class. Recommended!! This was SCH class
Fair grader, 4 essays and research paper, allows re-writes, some quizzes, somewhat regular homework, and attendance is important. Overall he is good but he loves to interrupt and be right. But he is also funny and very helpful and gives you tons of information about essays. I recommend him unless if you can't stand his attitude.
Zehr is an amazing teacher with funny stories, interesting assignments/essays, and is very helpful. He calls on random people (reading is extremely mandatory outside of class) and burns you if you cant answer his questions. The work is a fair amount, but you have to excel in every assignment if you plan to get that A
Zehr taught me more about writing in a week than I have learned my entire life. He is challenging, tough, sometimes rude, but a genius professor. If you work hard he will appreciate it and push you, he wants you to succeed and learn to write. Really breaks everything down for you, never just throws work at you. LOVE HIM.
NICE GUY but not easy...
Zehr is a good teacher. He has a preference for certain students, but he's pretty fair. Show up, be on time, and read. You'll get burned if you don't. He's a sports fan and movie buff, too.
Not an easy class, very challenging. If he calls on you in class, be PREPARED!!He will call you out if you don't answer correctly.Talks about himself way too much. Can be a brick most of the time.
Disaster
This class clearly prepares your ability for future classes requiring essay and research assignments. I found David Zehr to be encouraging, entertaining and genuinely interested in inspiring his students. Being a Laker fan will get you on his good side! Great class, I miss it.
Good class. The class is discussion based with about 4 essays and a final paper. He may pick on you if you're quiet though. That's the only part that I hated. Attendance is mandatory. He'll lower your grade if you're late or absent 3 times or more.
tough but fair. also very funny. would recommend his class.
Def not my favorite English professor I've taken at SMC. He loves to be right, so he doesn't allow for much creativity or discussion, which is how I learn best. Smart guy though, knowledgable about the world, past and present. He's funny at first, but you get sick of it pretty quickly. Not difficult to get an A but requires some effort on your part
I honestly don't know how I got an A in this class. He can be a very big smart-guy and will treat you like a child if you ask a question he's already vaguely addressed. Weekly 3-4 page essays are given. Easy final only had to write an essay on an essay from our book.
fall 2012. he is a chill guy. attendance is mandatory. you SHOULD participate. decent amount of writing and reading. harsh grader insofar as not willing to accept many ideas... try to agree with him.. prepares you well for writing though.. aside from that, he is nice, but sometimes rude. participate to get dat A. if you need to know, I got a B.
In my opinion he is not a good teacher. He can be rude and unfair.
Great teacher. Very encouraging. Interesting, relevant readings. I learned alot about writing. If you come to class and turn in papers on time, he's a pretty easy grader. Recommended.
Professor is very engaging. Be sure to participate and come to class having done the work as he will call on you often. Grades essays very gently in my opinion. Read the assigned book and essays and you will be fine.
FANTASTIC professor!!! I highly recommend!! He lectures the whole class and involves the class in discussion, the literature we read is interesting and his interpretations are fascinating! Your only homework is to read and there are 3 essays for the entire semester, he is hilarious and constantly quotes Jon Stewart! Great class, great professor.
Interesting reading, minimal essays, minimal homework (summaries), quizzes on the reading. He will call on you at random, ask you a question, and if you do not have the answer he will move on to the next person. Very condescending and he thinks he is funnier than he actually is. Fair grader. Overall the class was easier than I thought it would be.
I have taken him twice. Really funny, very straightforward. Is tough, but fair. Would totally recommend him.
Received an A on every assignment, including the final, but I would not recommend:far too easy class, dull readings, badly executed in-class discussions, little to no feedback on essay's, and horribly opinionated(shoots down student's input). Anyone who complains was seriously not trying because I did my minimal, and I passed with an A.
Meh quality. His classes are "discussion based" which means he asks a question and picks a student to answer until someone gets the right answer. Four essays, a final, and a research paper. He's looking for improvement, not ability from the beginning. The first day of class you'll love him, the last day you won't be able to stand him. Very liberal.
Proff Zehr is wonderful! I love literature and he helped me understand it even more. All classes are discussion based. Be prepared with the readings because there are pop quizzes. Sometimes he may tell you in advance if there's an upcoming quiz and if he doesn't tell you then its pretty easy to figure out there will be one. 3 essays and a final.
Winter 2014 - Liberal, Easy going, and a down to earth guy. Fun and very engaging discussion based lectures. Be prepared to speak as he will call upon you for a response. Put some effort if you want that A, but overall an easy class. Quizzes based on readings, 3 essays, midterm and final. Mandatory Attendance. We also watched 2 movies in class.
I love him!! my fav english professor thus far at smc. he's definitely a character that is either your cup of tea or not. extremely liberal man with some crazy adventures and speaks kind of like a crazy man too. bring materials and read ur stuff and be on time. he will hate and pick on you if you dont. very smart and helpful! love the way he speaks
Great professor, don't call him Dave! Passionate about what he does. Highly recommended!
LOVE HIM!!!!! absolutely love him! he's the best professor I've had in awhile. he's so helpful and so passionate about everything. Very thorough! Also, go to office hours! He's very helpful in them and he'll remember you and appreciate the effort. He's a great guy in general. Take him. 3 essays in total and a final.
Zehr was certainly a challenge. As a quiet student, it was hard to be constantly engaged in class, but you really have to be just to get by with Zehr. He will call on you and call you out if you don't know what you're talking about. His questions are super vague, so you have to amble your way through them, but he really challenges you in great ways
Best english teacher I have had. I am a international student and still got an A! He has a special personality either you love him or you hate him. He will call on you and you better have an answer. Saying something is always better than saying nothing. He helped me see things differently and I am so glad I took the class with him!
Such a great and challenging class, and you're only going to get out of it with what you put in. Interesting reads, and engaging class discussions. He's always willing to help you out especially if you go to his office hours. Great guy, incredible class.
He is one of the hardest, but most fair teachers I have had. He doesn't have time for playing around and wants you to really learn and do well. I can honestly say i've never learnt as much from any teacher before. He just doesn't like slackers (and who does?), so come to class and work hard and you will learn a TON. I loved him!
Yes, he has office hours, but I didn't think they were useful at all. Both times I sought out advice, I was promptly shot down. Though I don't personally feel he's THAT horrible of a teacher, I don't think he's deserving of the decently 'high' rating he has right now. One bad review might give future students a more sensible insight of the class.
He's pretty blunt. First impressions matter. If you don't speak up in class, you will learn whether you want to or not. He's very specific in his assignments. The class wasn't bad. It's just not for those wishing to get an easy A for English. If you love the subject like I do, you might like his class. Oh and DO NOT skip or be tardy. He hates that.
He is not an grader. He wants his students to figure out what is relevant in their papers. He expects you to show up and participate in class. If you are a good public speaker and like discussion, you will flourish in his class. He likes to discuss subjects of race, ethnicity, history, politics and current events.
He is a very mean teacher. If i had to do it over again I would not take this class again. Went to his office hours and was not helpful at all. He will pick on the students who look timid and will not talk in class. He is demeaning and gives many pointless discussions. He makes you feel stupid and will make you feel like you are lower than him.
He was one of my favorite professors. He's very passionate, discussions were interesting. He's not easy, but if you raise your hand and participate he likes that. Don't be late. He likes it if you come to his office. I did all the work and got a good grade.
This is a tough class, but you will dramatically improve your writing skills. Professor Zehr is an excellent teacher and the active discussions throughout the semester tremendously help you write class papers. Saying that, you have to attend class to pass. He tends to have class favorites, so get on his good side ;)
If you are good at history, talk during discussions, engage and show up on time to class, he will love you and you will do well. Make sure you participate, it is extremely important that you do so. Even if you don't like to, it is a crutial aspect to your success in his class!!!
Really great teacher, show up, participate and take notes! if you do those, you will do well! just follow his directions for the essays and basically be creative with it. Nice guy. Plus if you like history or politics, he will love you
To be able to get through this class you must like history and learning about politics. The research assignment is about amendments and court cases and our class assignments are all on controversial issues!!! It's sometimes repetitive but good class and nice teacher over all
Worst English teacher i ever had. He babbles on and on about things that have no relevance in our class like whats in the news or what is trending. He interrupted the final to tell us a pointless story about surfers. He does not give clear prompts or writing assignments. He is not open minded to new ideas and is often rude to students.
Amazing teacher. His assignments are very clearly laid out and he can clarify during office hours if need be. Reading assignments are thought provoking and interesting. Highly recommend him to anyone.
Mr Zehr is an amazing teacher and I highly recommend him. He made this class very interesting and most lectures are actually class discussions. Participation is very important, he wants to hear you debate with everyone. Not a lot of homework, mostly readings and then very interesting essays. I didn't have to put too much efforts to get an A.
One of the most inspiring professors I've had at SMC. First day, i thought about dropping his class bc of his attitude. Glad I didn't, learned a ton from his lectures and actually found him to be a nice guy confident about teaching. he has tendency to call you out and embarass u in class if u dont participate, so pay attention and READ
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I took English 1 Scholars with Professor Zehr in Fall of 2015. Overall, he's a very nice person. As a professor, he could not be any less clear. He assigns essays without giving prompts and just gives letter grades without a specific numerical grade. Participation is EVERYTHING. TAKE ANOTHER SCHOLARS CLASS, DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He's all about individual thinking and he gives you one question and you have to decide what to do with that in your essays. The discussions were great and relevant along with the readings. He gives you the chance to do things on your own which is why he's a little vague and doesn't help that much, he wants you to reflect. Overall a great teacher!
I loved Prof. Zehr's English 1 Scholars class. His lectures are brilliant; he brings up current issues, connecting them to the readings. There was not much homework, but we did have a 8-10 page research paper due at the end of the semester. I'm taking English 4 with him and it's great! Take this professor; he deeply cares for his students.
Zehr is a great professor. It can be a bit hard to understand his style at first and it can come off as intimidating, but you will get used to it. His expectations are pretty straight forward in that he wants you to think up original ideas. Definitely take this professor if you can, the lectures are great and the class is very inspiring. Chill guy.
David Zehr has a certain way about how he teaches its hard to grasp at first but he gives great feedback and will help you if you send him your work. Honestly didn't try and got a B. He can seem intimidating and is opinionated but really makes you think. Favorite professor. It takes a while to get used to it, but honestly he's great.
Excellent professor: He's passionate for what he does and knows how to keep the class awake. Most of the time will be spent discussing reading assignments, expect a few quizzes, in and out of class writing and a research paper. Participation and a sense of humor are paramount. If you didn't come to college to waste time, this class is for you.
Mr. Zehr is the best English teacher I've ever had! He is extremely passionate about his subject, has an amazing sense of humor, and chooses nontrivial reading for his class. He gives good feedback on papers, mostly focuses on your strong points, which I liked the most. He is ok with a little delay:"Don't turn in your paper unless it's brilliant!"
Profesor Zehr is a great teacher, although he does have a tendency to get off topic and talk about things that have nothing to do with class and what's going on in the news, he was an easy teacher! we were only assigned 3 essay and the final was ok, quizzes were easy as long as you read and there was only four.
Get ready to have many discussions in class. He'll call on you, so make sure to have a specific standpoint or opinion on whatever topic you're discussing. Definitely do the reading (it's not too much). Only like 4 papers plus a midterm and final. He's a nice respectable guy.
Dr. Zehr, seems rude at first but he really amazing. The readings you have will change the way you see the world, if you are willing to be open. Amazing class, definitely worth taking!!
Profesor Zehr's class is never boring. He ties in current events with the material you are studying. He makes a point to stress that you are allowed to express your personal opinions as long as you can back them up. I am overly sensative so sometimes I thought he was making fun of me when he just was joking around so don't take it personally.
The best English professor. He will change they way you think about everything. He did to me. I always hated English classes but his class was diff. I took him during winter and the class was amazing not boring a lot of discussions about everything. For essays he wants a lot of comentary. He will Help you to be better take him. He is amazing.
I loved professor Zehr! If you are liberal and into politics you will absolutely love this class. He gets off topic a lot and talks about politics so be prepared, but he grades papers really easily. It pays to participate and he will call on everyone. Zehr is a smart and funny guy, and really wants to bond with his students. Wish I could take again
I do NOT recommend anyone take his class. His teaching style is based on class discussion, however he leaves very little room for others to communicate their interpretation or opinion of a text. He is very demeaning if you have differing opinions. He does not like when people ask questions, so if you need clarity, be aware. Rude and unprofessional.
If you don't mind hearing someone ramble about how Trump is stupid and anything else that comes on CNN, do take his class.
Do not take this class if you want to focus on the novels and stories assigned. The one book we had to buy we skipped because we spent 3 weeks on both Candide and book 4 of Gulliver's Travels. He goes off topic constantly with discussions about politics and his family. If your opinions are different than his, they will not be accepted openly.
Professor Zehr is one of the best professor SMC has. I truly enjoyed his class, every class was so interesting and his sense of humor is the best. You are required to participate so be ready and read you material which is usually really interesting essays.
Get ready to be involved if you want him to like you and do well! during class we sit and discuss the book/story we read and he calls you out so make sure you read them. He also tends to go off-topic and talk about Trump, but I don't mind because he's funny and we have more than enough time during class.
Class is a joke, but is also an Easy A, so enroll at ur own peril. Spent 20% on the actual material and 80% listening to him ramble about Trump, Netflix documentaries, and Porsches. U just gotta learn to pop in ur metaphorical earplugs, and nod your head every time he addresses u. Reiterate what he says in class in ur essays and u'll be fine.
Dr. Zehr is the BESTTTT professor at SMC. He is caring, kind, and at the same time strict. You are going to Know exactly what you need to do in order to stay on top of everything. I really enjoyed his English 1 class. Therefore, I'm sure you are going to enjoy his class as well as me. Cheers Alireza.
He's a great professor and really likes to engage with his students. Sometimes he likes to go off tangent, but he keeps the class entertained.
He is one of the best profs. I have ever had. He wants to know what you're thinking and brings up so many interesting current events. Assigns 1 book thats very good and assigns textbook that is just a book of short stories that can be found online. If you like talking in class, take him, if you don't, don't take the class because he calls everyone.
Prof. Zehr's class is challenging at first. I'm an international student who's not used to Voltaire or Dostoevsky but the way he teaches the class is eye-opening. The key is to participate. Read the book and try to understand it. Speak up in class about your perspective. He may not accept it sometimes but if you are consistent, he'll accept it.
Zehr is a really fun professor. Throughout the semester we mostly talked about politics and current events. We got off topic a lot, so we did not get to read every piece on the syllabus. However, what we did read was really interesting, and the lectures were very insightful. There were three papers and one quiz in total, so not too much work.
Prof. Zehr is great. Challenging, inspirational, and fun. Simply follow his lead, do the homework, read essays and books and you will be fine. Participation is part of grade and easy to participate as he asks a lot of questions so make sure to do the work. He has great stories about family, travel, and politics.
Kind, compassionate, and intriguing professor. Encourages discussions and everyones opinion on subjects in the class. The material was interesting and enjoyable to learn. Essays are a lot of work, but if you show up and go to office hours, you'll do well. Participation also helps you greatly as well. He's challenging but well worth it.
Zehr is very nice and understanding outside of class, however don't be fooled; If you aren't paying attention in class or making effort to participate, he will gladly make it known. He does get off topic sometimes, but he is very intelligent.
Zehr is an interesting fellow, I think he is a good professor but he shouldn't try to force his views upon others. Overall, just show up to class, be ready to be called on, if you're a conservative don't take this class, and he is a pretty easy grader if you take notes in class and use them in your essays! he also cuts you when you're speaking lol
I did not like Zehr. He's a very rude and mean guy. I got such a bad vibe from him I felt like he especially did not like me which made participating in class awkward for me. I didn't even want to visit his office hours because I was scared of him. Despite working super hard I ended up getting a B like seriously??
Proff. Zehr can be extremely abrasive. His ENG 1 class felt more like a history of court cases class because that is all we really focused on. He likes to look at civil issues. He is very clear in what he wants and is a relatively easy grader but be ready to argue if you have a Conservative/Republican stand.
I love Professor Zehr. I took his class in fall my first year. He's really funny and enjoys talking w/ his students. There are some summaries you must write on Supreme Court cases but he makes it VERY clear and easy to understand what to write. Extremely helpful and nice and helps you become a critical thinker. I'd definitely take his class again.
Find another ENG 2 professor. In order to succeed in this class it requires some kissing up to him. Cool guy but he can catch an attitude really quick. Doesn't really seem passionate about job.
Not worth taking his class because he can be grumpy most of the time and likes to pick on people who are not used to speak in front of the class.
