he was the worst teacher...he gave notes and flew through them. Test are confusing as hell and tricky. When we went for help he didn't help he wouldn;t shut up and listen to the questions we had. One on one time was a waste because he just talked! Idiot
We love you Davin!
best teacher
he is soo funny, always in a great mood and full of energy. He knows his subject very well and if you listen to him and ask for help you can understand his test, which may be a little different, and do well on them.
Very fun teacher...a little on the easy side when it comes to the class. Used to be an ice skater...not sure of he stil is! :) I thought the class was interesting...most of the material is common sense. Pay attention and come to class, and you should do fin!
very fun guy.... reminds me ofjack from will an grace... kept me awake... and gives study guides for tests. though sometimes i had no clue what was going on i made a good grade. just go to class and take notes, youll be alright.
I had him for a 9am class and if it was a boring lecture, I never would have gone. He keeps you awake and laughing, but his notes and tests can be confusing. You have to study the material yourself, but his class is a lot of fun!
great
Best teacher at GSU!!!
Davin made this class interesting and useful, even though I was not interested in it before coming in. If you're a business major and still have the option of taking this class, I would highly recommend this over BCOM.

Davin is a very interresting teacher. He is very animated and makes "the Media of Mass Communication" seem very interresting. Bottom line, he makes a really boring topic fun and interresting. He gives study guides. Some writing in this class and the tests are really confusing, but i reccomend this teacher if you are good with multiple choice tests.
Class was easy, tests were confusing and the papers were useless. Overall good interesting class but don't take it over the summer.
A wonderful orator but he's not too helpful

Pretty interesting class. Examples on tests are hard and lectures are wierd to study but he is very engaging and likeable. Lectures apply to real life situations. Grindstaff is young and able to relate to students.
he made it interesting sometimes, with movie clips, but his tests can be confusing as he takes random examples from his lectures. but sometimes he warns you if it 'might be on the test'. so write those down. the online portion can be tough too, just have the book open in front of you when you do them.
Yes the class is somewhat interesting but, lecture are confusing, and tests are not easy. Prof. likes "higher level thinking questions." Cool guy though, pretty easy to get along with, and gives 1/2 credit for late work !!
I really liked this class! it was interesting and i find myself, even now being out of the class, recognizing things i learned in every day life (on the news, etc). The only thing i didn't like were the little papers. in the beginning i thought they were a good idea but then i just had too much to do i had probems finding time to do them!
He is the best professor i had ever. he does care about students and curve the test.very nice and very inteligent
never take this class over the summer . we had to turn in at least 2 papers a day and sometimes 3 or 4. the class is extremely boring bc he just reads over the handouts word for word and expects you to retain every piece of information on 30 pages. tests are rather hard yet he does curve them. there is also a group presentation and who likes those?
Meticulus Tests, Must study hard, but If you actually try in this class you will do great. Not a slacker class.
Nice professor, curve all the tests and flexible on the online activities. But the test are extremely hard must study.
I enjoyed his lectures. This course should be named Communincations 1000. It didn't really seem like it was a speech class(for the most part). But that's not a bad thing. Study for the test, give a speech, do your on-line activities, and you got nothing to worry about. Oh, I almost forgot>>>>>GO TO CLASS!
I came into the class with the idea that it would be an easy A. SO WRONG! It's not hard per se, but nothing is handed to you. The key to this professor is class attendance! If you attend the lecture portion then you'll do well. Tests are a lot harder then you'd expect! Just go to class!! I repeat, GO TO CLASS! Not for students who sleep in.
You really have to pay attention and be able to apply the concepts. The tests are easy to fail because they are only 25 questions.
Attendance is a must, he takes 20 points from 400 semester total if absent more than 3 times. Tests are easy to fail because they're only 25 questions, but at least he curves. He's very helpful though and far from boring.
He is very intelligent and loves his field. The first half of semester is more interesting than last half. Seems to pull his lectures from the air - they don't really match up the required textbook. Tests are difficult, can be quite abstract. Huge curves, though. In some cases, 20 pts! Pretty boring class at the end.
Very passionate. Loves what he does. Tests are hard, but not impossible. Huge curves. Make sure you study lectures and do the online activities. ATTEND class and you'll do pretty well. Last half of class is more difficult/less interesting.
He is an awesome professor. He really knows what he is talking about and makes it way easier to comprehend as opposed to reading the text, which is still a must!!! Attendence is a top priority. His lectures are easy to follow because he has you print them out beforehand so you have a guideline for the lesson. Good sense of humor, strict but fair.=)
The class is itself seemed boring and useless, but if you must take it, Grindstaff is a good professor.
Cool guy, laid back. Boring class, easy grade if you come to class and do the work.
He is the best teacher I've has @ GSU. He is very helpful and doesn't mind how many times you email him with questions. I thought this was going to be an extremely hard class, but it wasn't. Spch 4410 was harder than this class!
He was very energetic. Easy to listen to.Read the chapters and do the on-line activities. Tests are kinda hard.Good teacher though
This class is too easy I don't know what you guys are complaining about. It can't get any easier. He gives HUGE grading curves. HE gave a 20 point curve on the mid term so everyone made an A. If you fail this class you have to be a moron or just didn't try at all. Easy A clearly
He's a great professor, very nice guy. Workload included: online assignments (easy), 3 tests (he gives BIG curves on all of them), and 1 speech in front of your breakout class (easy to get a B on). Didn't study much; I crammed for the last two tests and ended up with an A- for his class. I RECOMMEND HIM!
Grindstaff is a great teacher, he is really cool and laidback. He understands hat lie happens and will work with you. He made Advanced Public Speaking a pleasure. Grade A teacher
Easiest class. I attended maybe four lectures the entire semester and all the exams and made a decent grade.
Great Teacher! Gives curves on every exam & very helpful at office hours. You dont really need the book unless you dont go to lectures (like me) & need to study using study guide. You have to go out of your way to fail this class.
great teacher! 3 tests a speech and some online quizzes (very very easy). he curves tests and everything is from the powerpoints from lectures. TAKE HIM!!!
Professor Grindstaff is super nice and understanding. Attendance is not mandatory in his class, but he does take attendance and I definitely found it helpful to attend all his lectures. Overall the class was pretty easy and it is clear that Grindstaff wants to help his students succeed! He is very helpful, funny, and knowledgable.
nice guy, easy to understand, great lecturer, three speeches and one final exam... he was a little bit of a pushover when it came to keeping dates on certian assignments to avoid confusion but other than that hes awesome.
Great Teacher. If you are going to take speech 1000 take him. Please do. test are easy. only 3 test, but he gave us 20 point curve on 2 of them. especially take him if you have hard classes and need a laid back class.
REALLLY easy. Professor is super adorable and easy to follow. Gives you almost the entire test on the study guides and lecture notes. He does have an attendance policy and although he is flexible it definitely pays to go. Gives HUGE curves so overall a good choice of classes if you take Speech
This class was pretty simple and stright to the point. Everything he told us to read and what he lectured about in class was on the test. Its okay if you don't score to high on a test, its just a point amount and at the end of the semester you add all your grades together whatever bracket it falls in is your letter grade. Ex. 400-450= A
FANTASTIC professor. He makes everything really easy to understand, makes the class enjoyable. The tests are pretty easy, he gives you a study guide for all of them but gives a curve as well. You have to make a 5 minute speech but it's not that difficult. Take his class, you won't regret it.
He's a great teacher and he makes the class interesting. His lectures are comprehensive and clear. You will do best on your test if you review according to his studyguide because it will narrow topic down. He give curves and extra credit.Easy to an A. This class is not stressful and he's easy. I'd recommend it.
Cool teacher, laid back. Liked him more at the beginning of the year because he was funny and made it really interesting. Towards the end of the semester he started racing through the lectures to get more info into the class time (only 50 mins) but other than that (which made it a little tough) he was really cool and helpful go to class though! :)
Great professor who teaches the class very well. He's really easy and gives lots of opportunities for students to do well in his class. Take him!
LOVED Grindstaff! He makes everything VERY clear and gives curves. He also gives study guides of exactly what will be on exam, and the one speech he grades very fairly. He requires you email the speech outline and he basically edited the whole thing for me and I made 110. TAKE HIM!!!
Hilarious, friendly, and relatable. Gives curves and extra credit. Make sure you go to class and read the book, though. I would definitely take him again!
Although Grindstaff is very sweet and very hilarious, his class can be difficult if you don't read or pay attention. His notes are hard to understand if you're not in class to hear him explain them. He gets off track easily. But, like I said the class can be easy if you pay attention and read.
If I had to take SPCH 1000 all over again, then I would personally chose Prof. Grindstaff. He was such a nice, laid-back and compassionate professor. The work wasn't hard--in-fact quite easy. The most demanding work we had was a 5 minute speech--which wasn't bad. He give MAJOR curves on test and gives plenty of extra-credit. Loved him!!
Hard tests but curves EVERYTHING high!!! He is lively, funny and has a cute personality. skim the books, do all the activities and you will be good!
he's a figure skater!
He was really good at teaching the information, but the tests are ridiculously hard. But he curves the heck out of them. Attendance is mandatory, but you could sit there on your phone the whole time and he wouldn't care. Just don't whisper to people, he hates that! Just shut up and do your own thing and you're set.
he is a good teacher. knows what he is talking about. his test are way harder than they need to be and studying doesn't always help but he curves like 15-20 pts.
Professor Grindstaff is interesting and lively while teaching. Midway through the semester it got extremely boring though. The tests are difficult, but try to pay attention and skim the readings and it'll be fine. He curves a whole lot, so it's hard not to get an A.
I liked him a lot but his class was harder than it needed to be. His 3 exams were short and difficult, even with his curves I still failed two. One speech that really helps out your grade.
Good professor overall, funny and makes the class interesting at the beginning. It starts to get boring, he curves tests but they're a bit hard. The speech helps your grade
Funny. All his lectures consist of notes (printable outlines). He tells you exactly what will be on the tests. The lab and the lab instructor were completely useless though.
Best professor I've ever had! uses great examples to make sure you understand. His class is broken into a lecture day and a lab day, he is your lecturer and a grad student is your lab professor. Makes the class interesting and does not waste time. You have to give a speech in your lab that is an easy test grade.
His test are really hard, and the study guides are long. But if you do all the study guides they really help to pass the tests. Great teacher, around the end of the semester he started to give extra credit which helped pushed my grade from a B to an A.
he's very engaging in his lectures and his examples and references REALLY help you understand the material better. he's very clear and repeats himself a lot to make sure everyone heard and understand. his tests are pretty difficult.. you've really gotta work for it in his class. he sends out A LOT of reminders about due dates!!!
He's awesome! He gives out SO much extra credit and curves every exam. Show up to class (its not even an hour lecture) because attendance can hurt your grade at the end of the semester if you never sign in. Only used the textbook when filling out the study guides. He's hilarious and fun to be in class with; take this class it WILL NOT hurt you!
Dr. Grindstaff is amusing to listen to, but the way he explained things was a bit confusing to me. You may have to do a lot of outside studying to get a good grade. There's a mandatory speech that is very formulaic and leaves no room for creativity. Good new is there's tons of extra credit!
This is the best professor I have ever had. Three exams, Failed one, and still managed to get an A- in the theater. Plays are mandatory to read and see. He is beyond helpful if you go to his office hours. Though he does talk quite a lot, he is the nicest professor I have ever had at GSU. He gave out two extra credit during and after the semester
His test are ridiculously difficult for an elective class that doesn't even matter too much. He was very sarcastic and told corny jokes. He was very annoying because I tried so hard and still didnt do well on his test. FIND ANOTHER PROFESSOR!!!!!
I don't like the breakout classes because the TA's are not necessary and waste of time. But tests are moderately easy but with a few tricky questions. Go to lectures because it is helpful, and his grading system is simple - point system. Gives extra credit, but there is a speech except it is not that bad... Overall, he was above average!
Not the most interesting subject, but pretty clear-cut. His tests are basically his notes, so just show up to class and take the notes and you should be fine. He also gives pretty decent points and extra credit. Breakout sessions are pointless and a waste of time but attendance matters so you have to come anyway.
His notes/lectures are confusing. You're better off getting your notes in your textbook. He's really funny, but he's kinda sassy. He gives you A LOT of extra credit, especially on exams.
I took Grindstaff twice, once for Human communications and then secondly for SPCH 2050 he is a great teacher, and definitely one of my favorites. Hes so funny, chill, and cool! Like you'll really love him. Sometimes I forget I'm taking a class because he makes it so fun and interesting. He gives a good amount of EC so youll def end up with an A
His lectures are funny. His tests are easy as long as you do the study guide he gives you for them. If you do the study guide, then you are guaranteed to Ace the test. He curves the test. He gives a lot of points so you can boost up your grade. Had to do one 5 minute speech on whatever you want. Besides that it was good.
Dr. Grindstaff was really cool! He is a very enthusiastic person. I came into GSU not wanting to take Speech 1000, but he actually made it enjoyable. He gives a LOT of extra credit and his tests are curved. You will have to give a speech in this class, which is the only thing that sucks (unless you loved public speaking, I know I don't). Take him!
Dr. Grindstaff was nice, but I promise you won't understand the subject material without putting in effort.
So this professor was difficult to take for me. He is very particular. All your work has to follow an exact format. You don't have a whole lot of freedom in assignments (other than the speech). He is VERY particular when it comes to grading the speeches though. Pay attention for that portion of the semester. Not very clear on instructions.
Great professor! Fun professor! Gives plenty of extra credit opportunities.
This class wasn't too bad. I often thought I did well on tests but ended up not doing so well. But luckily this class has lots of extra credit opportunities to make up for it. I strongly feel that the lab portion is completely pointless, but attendance counts so go. Do the study guides he gives ahead of time and you'll be fine, it's not that bad.
He is a good professor but this class is somewhat tricky. His lectures are good and if you study lecture notes and what is on the study guide you can get an "A", I would not say its an "easy A" tho. The lab that goes along with the course is annoying and pointless! Test are kind of tricky but he curves, and he gives plenty of extra credit. Got an A
Over all a good professor. He talks a lot, but he's very upbeat so it doesn't get boring
Professor Grindstaff gives interesting lectures. The material is fairly easy (SCOM1000). The online textbook is where I spent most of my time. However, it is very clear which parts of each chapter are important. He gave us study guides for each exam. This class definitely boosted my GPA.
For honors students, all that's different is that you'll have to type up a short essay response for the exams and turn them in online, which isn't that bad. Follow the study guides because those narrow down what's on the exams (a bit more concept-based). Overall, very enthusiastic professor who has a grading system that's extremely fair!
Grindstaff is a great professor. 3 TESTS (Level of Difficulty: MEDIUM) and a 5 MIN SPEECH (Level of Difficulty: SUPER EASY). He gives many extra credit opportunities. Attendance is MANDATORY. TIPS: Just Skim through the chapters and take YOUR OWN NOTES. That way you'll understand better concepts much better.
I took Grindstaff online and it was somewhat difficult but I did well due to his test curves and loads of extra credit. His exam reviews are essential for doing well on exams because he tells you what sections, pages on the textbook, and notes to look at. The speech was a little hard since we had to use iMovie. But overall, the class was easy.
I took his class online in the summer and it was incredibly easy. You have to make a 5-minute speech looking straight into the camera so it would be weird but he does not take off points for that. 3 tests, super easy if you complete the study guides. There were tons of curves and extra credits for you to score an easy A.
I had him last fall semester. He was a good professor gives you lots of notes. STUDY FOR THE TEST! The class isn't hard especially if you show up
Here's the thing: he's a very petty person but his class is super easy. He gets sassy if you bother emailing him about something you felt was unclear or if its stated in one of the multiple pages he posts on iCollege. I don't see why it's difficult to just respond back with an answer or at least be kind. Easy A, just an annoying class.
This class consists of a lab and a lecture. The lecture was only 50 mins and felt rushed most of the time. There is a lot of information to go over in little time it's difficult to try to ask him to clarify because of the lack of time. Homework is fast and easy but my lab teacher had no idea what she was talking about. Felt I didnt learn anything.
Dr. Grindstaff is a very caring professor. I didn't like the fact that most assignments are worth 5 points; even a 3 pages essay. There's bonus for every exam and serveral extra credit opportunities throughout the semster.
Don't take this class unless you have interest in the material. Take it only if your major is related to this. It looks like he teaches well, but the tests are very hard and nothing comes straight from the study guide. He gives extra credit, but that doesn't help too much. Don't take this class.
Dont take this class. he doesnt teach well, and expects a lot. U get extra credit ops but they don't help your grade. the tests are hard. makes you work too much for a 2 credit hour class
This teacher helps you out if you ever have any problems with the class or the lab instructor. Exams are online on icollege and extra credit is given on every test.
For starters, Davin Grindstaff is a wonderful professor, however, if you take him for Argumentation, there's a 10 page (or more) paper that is due at the end of the semester, which means, for ten weeks you will be writing a paper EVERY week and it will eat you alive. I was not prepared for this and I wish I knew beforehand. Prepare yourselves.
Dr. Grindstaff cares about his students. He has been very responsive anytime I reach out to him for help and offers detailed expectations. During class, his lectures can be a little hard to keep up with, but he allows for time to take notes and he answers questions thoroughly. He says textbook is a must, but I never bought it and still did well.
THE ONLINE TESTS SUCK. i did them online could never get an A on them. You really have to study. everything else is great! hella extra credit!
I NEVER showed up to class just came to sign myself in or a friend in and left. All his test are online so I say TAKE IT WITH A GROUP if you take the test by yourself you wont pass any test. Some questions you can get straight from google and other you can search in the online textbook that you have to buy because you have assignments got an A
I didn't enjoy this class. The tests were online but so difficult and vague that a lot of people struggled to pass. He acts like he gives lots of extra credit but it only helps out 2 points max. You have to buy the online book for $80 just to do the homework
He's a very enthusiastic guy and easy to listen to. You won't get bored in his class. He also provides lecture notes for every lecture, and exams are all on iCollege. It is all open book tests, so it's super easy to pass.
The difficulty of this class is unnecessary. What you learn in class (mandatory) has nothing to do with tests. You HAVE to read and understand the chapters in the book to do well on the tests. If this is a subject you take seriously, I think this is the right class for you because he is very passionate about it. But DO NOT take it otherwise.
I took Dr. Grindstaff's class online and it was OK. There are 3 speeches, 3 short essays, 3 tests, and then we had homework assignments. The tests were challenging and concept-based, so you definitely HAVE to study in order to do well. However, he curved every test and gave really great extra credit at the end of the semester.
It is a hard choice to take him or not. His grading criteria are clear and he gives out a lot of extra credit and also curves most of the tests. What he teaches in lectures does not correspond to the material on the tests. You have to read the book to do better on the tests. He has one speech assignment, which is easy and is graded really easily.
Txtbook MANDATORY. Hw is inside textbook platform, make sure u read! Multiple discussions and u will record yourself presenting different assignments. Hard part is exams (4). ALWAYS 25 questions, with 30min to finish. Discussions and speech assignments are easy. Final is a research project that you present(video). Prof. is available and helps out.
Highly recommend Dr. Grindstaff. He was very kind and truly cared about his students. If you put in the work, you will succeed in this class. He wants to help his students not be a burden to them. He is a very nice guy and gives great feedback on assignments. Would absolutely take another one of his classes again if I could.
Dr. Grindstaff is a great professor. While this was a trying time for everyone as far as remote courses go, he worked hard to make the class run as smoothly as possible. His point system to grade is a bit confusing, but he is more than willing to help you understand where you stand in the class. I was very fortunate to have his class during COVID.
Awesome teacher! It is clear to see he cares about his students and wants them to do their best in his class. He is one of the few professors who actually made online learning go smoothly during COVID. His assignments were super straight forward and he also responds to emails quickly/is always happy to help. I hope I get this teacher again!
Professor Grindstaff is truly one of the best ! He's so understanding just let him know whatever you are struggling with and he'd be more than happy to help. He'll even set up one - on -one webex zoom calls to go over exams ! A TRUE KING , you will not regret taking him !
i enjoyed this professor. very engaging lectures and lots of personality which I loved. icollege page and textbook were super confusing for me but consistent material, just don't forget to take the quizzes. would take again
I took dr. Grindstaff online, there are so many assignments/work for this class discussions, homework, video speeches, essays, and tests. the textbook is mandatory you will need it for homework. to be honest for this level class he does not need this much work , it its just an elective.
There is a lot of homework and many tasks to be completed each week. Don't presume to find the answers on Google because they are all new questions. This is a very responsible teacher, but the amount of homework he has is overwhelming.
Dr. Grindstaff is very helpful. He responds to emails quickly and is willing to answer any questions about the course content. The course content is not difficult, but the papers can become tedious, at least for the honors section. I learned a lot about human communication. There are strict deadlines, so just be on top of your work.
A good guy and a good professor overall, but there are a LOT of assignments. Please do not take his class if you think it will just be an easy A. His iCollege classroom, first off, is not user friendly at all. He tried his best to organize, but it is difficult to navigate and messy. There are obviously several speeches and essays, as well. Keep up.
The class was great and everything was very easy to navigate , and all due dates are made very clear, and the extra credit as well.
The class is easy as long as you read the textbooks. The speech assignments weren't hard but don't underestimate the time it takes to complete them. Dr. G grades fairly based on the rubric, so use it to complete assignments. Overall, would take again.
Does not care for students
Professor Grindstaff is one of the best professors I've had. The assignments are simple and he offers a lot of extra credit. He responds to emails quickly and is very approachable. The textbook is the most helpful for the module exams. There is one speech assignment (that he doesn't grade harshly) and 2 writing assignments.
By far one of the easiest professors I've taken. The class is easy, just put in the work. The professor gives a lot of extra credit opportunities as well and is very responsive with emails. Due dates are made clear so if you missed it, it's totally on you. Gave me very good feedback on my speeches and assignments.
A very easy professor. The class is straightforward; you just need to do your weekly CONNECT assignment. Some quizzes can be challenging but there are plenty of extra credit opportunities. Dr. Grindstaff is very fun and is responsive to emails. Clear due dates, and good feedback on speeches and assignments.
He is so funny and has a great personality. He keeps the class interesting and keeps you wanting to learn, and all his grading criteria are straightforward.
Professor Grindstaff is pretty chill! My only complaint is that he grades via a point scale, so you never really know what grade you have overall.
Verry big attitude for no reason
Super passionate about what he does and it shows in the way he teaches! I was never bored listening to him speak. He is super accommodating and understanding and the workload is straightforward and easy! Just dont fall behind. Attendance is mandatory. Point based system so you wont really know what you have till the end of the semester. Easy class!
I took his online human communications class, super chill. The workload is pretty normal for any college class. I love how organized he has everything in order of what you should be doing every week. It's really helpful especially in online classes. The speeches are simple just look into the work.
Wonderful teacher, very lenient regarding submission and does not grade harshly. Be ready for a good amount of work and exams.
Honestly you can tell Professor Grindstaff has a passion for teaching. Very consistent with work, and always gives good feedback. Would take this class again!
I took this class online and I kinda had a hard time. The professor isn't bad he's lenient and grades fairly/VERY generous with grading but for me writing papers is hard so this class was VERY stressful. There was 8 papers with the final paper being 12-15 pages and 2 Exam's. I know this is college but I did struggle a little. Good Luck you got this
I took SCOM online, and Prof. Grindstaff made the class expectations clear for us all. Moreover, he offers a lot of extra credit, so getting an A in his class is extremely possible. You are expected to do lots of speeches and discussion posts, and he leaves very valuable feedback on all these assignments, too. Overall, definitely recommend him!
Professor Grindstaff is passionate and makes the class engaging. Lots of speeches and feedback, but manageable workload. Unstuck study helped with prep. Overall, would recommend this class!
Used connect textbook for reading & chapter quizzes. Exams every 1-2 weeks. A few short essays. Can easily get an A if you put in the work. Easy to understand concepts. Two speeches, one being an introductory speech about yourself and the other on a topic of your choice. Offers a few extra credit opportunities
