I wasn't looking forward to this class, but his teaching style is very clear. The class is by no means easy, but if you really want to learn research writing, he is a fantastic professor.
Extremely hard class. Grading is supa harsh, if you want your GPA to drop, take his class.
r u ready to burn ur GPA? Then, take this class right away. Half of the students dropped the class in the first 8 days. He is a nice guy but not a very helpful one. Put it this way, he is nice in every single way but not a very nice one when he is grading ur research paper.
Davis is a friendly personable guy. Thats where the good stuff stops. His teaching style is different, focused around history. I'll be dropping his class in a couple of days. Homework everyday, takes several hours to complete. Very heavy work load.
His instructions are clear. His comments do help to improve essay tremendously. But, his grading is strict. Endless piles of homework. Not recommended for whiny students.
My favorite instructor. He is helpful, especially with essays, and engaged in the class. Encourages student participation.
He knows what he's teaching, too demanding for all assignment. not flexible with students. ease off a little. prof. picky on grading. hard class. nothing else to say.
Very challenging course. However, I have never learned so much about writing and locating relevant research. I have used what I learned in this course in other classes. Davis is a really good guy, he is extremely fair, offers extra credit, and sets up high standards for his students. If you actually want to learn something, take his class.
I really liked Oldham and his personality and even his way of teaching. I got along really well with him and what not but his information was a little tricky for me to keep organized. He used a lot of online hybrid format stuff that was just all over the board. Good professor, just stay organized and don't fall behind.
An interesting class, he was nice and kept it a cheery atmosphere, but extremely harsh on grading. If you want your grade in the class to be an F and have to retake it, then take his class. His class always tended to go off onto some other topic other then what is the topic of the class. MORE POSITIVE FEED BACK!!! PLEASE!!
Really good guy. He may be the best teacher that I have had and I have not even recieved a grade from him yet. He is an extremely easy person to talk to and I personally endorse his bid for president of the United States of America.
He's one of the best teachers Shoreline C. College offers. He does not kiss students' asses just to keep his position. He is there to teach. He does puts higher bar for us to pass, but it is extremely helpful. His instruction means a lot in a long-term. I asked him to be my academic advisor after his class.
deep recommendation.... should not take this professor
where should I start...HMM he is too negative... a very boring class specifically HIM... very harsh on grading. I'm not kidding by no means. Just wait for your grade on the first assignment. you think you can do better later but your score decreases on other assignments. HE is Boring... did i tell you this already? He is boring...
Smart people should take his class. He treats students as grown-ups. I left Shoreline now, but he was the best teacher I had there. As an ESL student, It was difficult for me to be in his class, but it was better the way.
extremely BORING, extremely hard at grading.
Do not let some of the other comments on this board steer you away from Professor Oldham's class. This man genuinely CARES about your performance in the class. He also cares for you as a friend would when it comes to life's problems. He does grade somewhat strict, but this is a positive, not a negative. Take his class if you want to learn.
he has a passion for what he does. i enjoy his class alot
He is arrogant, rude, unwelcoming, and not approachable looking. He doesn't smile, doesn't say hi, just nice normal things people do, he doesn't.
No text. Can buy essay manual to learn structural forms, even so, they may not jive w/his expectations. Excessive assignments. U may need frequent office visits of low grade will hurt your GPA. Some students fit well, but if u do not, prepare for time-sucking effort.
He wasn't a very helpful teacher if you were having problems.
he was the best english teacher I ever had.
awful teacher
He introduces to the students why it is essential for us to learn English (where most teachers fail to do or make a relationship to). I learned a great deal in this class. His assignments are the core foundation to the essays. Come to class, do your assigments, and you'll get an A. Not that hard.
This teacher was the worst teacher ever. His lectures are good but most the time you would go home misunderstanding what he was really trying to say. So you would do your homework, everything is good and then when you do your essay he marks all over it and grades really hard. DO NOT TAKE HIM. HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!!!!
I used to like him.......... until I see my grades...
Currently in class, reminded us of our constitutional duty to be educated and able to communicate. I am glad to be in his class. Haven't seen grades yet, but you only get what you put in. From what I have heard in class, there won't be many good grades. What are they teaching in high school? Can you read something besides a text/twitter?
he is the worst teacher I've ever had.
He is very intelligent, but can be a little confusing. He is a very hard grader but gives good feedback. He's extremely democratic, and really gives a lot of the power to the students. Letting us choose what poems we want to read and move due dates. Excellent taste in books. Seems kind of in a hurry a lot, but overall a great professor.
extremely hard teacher, harder than i can say all of english 101 teachers. he knows what he's talking about and is clearly a professional in this field, but i always have a hard time knowing what he's trying to say during his lectures. he's also a very hard grader, and will kill your gpa. take him if you're serious in english and is good at it.
I personaly find him to be a very clear communicator. I do think his class is hard but worth it. He has answered every question I have posed and makes time to help when ever he can. Good teacher.

Out of the multitude of professors I've had over the years, he is one of the best. If you want an easy, brainless class, look elsewhere. But if you want an inspiring and intelligent teacher, I'd highly recommend his class. He is respectful of students, and although he is incredibly knowledgeable, he always is ready to listen to the students. A+
Great teacher and great guy! I learned so much but as what was said earlier, the class is really really hard. My advice if you take him is to really follow the instructions then you'll do good.
He is a very nice guy, and you will learn a lot. He teaches a lot differently than I had experienced before. Going to class gets kind of repetitive and there is a lot of group work. He grades the essays very meticulously, so expect a lot of comments on them.
He is a great teacher, tough grader but somewhat lenient. Great ideas for extra credit and open to suggestions, if you aren't able to produce the work that is requested for extra credit. A very engaging class. If you have ever seen the big Leboswki try closing your eyes and listening to Davis, he sounds like Jeff Bridges.
A great person and good teacher. His goal is to make proficient writers out of his students. Unfortunately has somewhat unreasonable expectations from them. If you want to learn, he will teach you. If you just want to get by, your grade will show accordingly.
His class is extremeley hard and confusing. highly unrecomended.
His class was difficult because he taught completely different than my AP English teachers had. He is a very detailed grader so there will be a lot of marks on your papers. He is very specific on what he wants your paper to look like, and if you don't give that you wont get a good grade. He has a lot of knowledge to offer but i hate the grading.
Davis is a great Prof. If you are looking for an easy "A" then his classes are not for you. He is tough but if you love to write you will love him. A master of his craft, passionate and eager to help those who want it. A great mentor and educator.
Great teacher, even better friend. If you like writing and don't mind going to work, he's your guy. My advice is to be vocal during discussions. I definitely recommend him.
Incredibly difficult grader. I'm not one for discussion, i like listening, but he basically forces you to say stuff. I love writing and this class is making me hate it. Nice guy, difficult grader, and i don't recommend him.
I check to see if Davis is offering the courses I need before I do anything else. He is an awesome instructor, mentor, listener, fellow-parent, and just an all around cool guy. I love his brain! His eyes, too!
He is a hard teacher. I really don't recommend this teacher.
He is quite nice and helpful. He is a tough grader but, and he emphasizes this, is because he is holding all students to the UW standard. Stay on top of your assignments and definitely ask him for his personal input on your paper. As long as you put in the effort and ask for help, anyone can do fine in this class.
My class was completely online. I was extremely impressed with the quantity of feedback, help, attention he gave to all students. Based on his grading of my and example essays, I do believe he is a generous grader if you try, especially if you work hard. I thought he was well organized. Bottom line; if your approach is to try hard, you'll do well.
I LOVED my experience with Davis Oldham. The homework was moderate, but he offers so much help that it seems very easy. He is a discussion-based teacher! Please note that if you do not like in-class discussion and small groups, you will NOT like his classes. Very clear teacher who is open to all students' ideas and beliefs. Highly recommended.
This is not an easy English 101 class. Davis is harsh on is grading. You only get credit for assignments turned in online if you show up for class the day it's due. You don't learn much in-class because you're always only going over other student's work and it doesn't always apply to your paper. Avoid this class!
really helpful professor
He's a great teacher and his lectures are really good. He sometimes goes on rants but that's okay because the 50 minutes pass by fast. He is a tough grader and expects you to be at UW level. There's A LOT of homework! He grades quickly and replies with feedback. Uses students in your class as examples, sometimes does your homework for you.
Hes a pretty hard when it comes to grading however the requirements for each assignment are clear. The hardest of the two English classes I have taken however I still enjoyed the class, style of teaching and his personality. Not an easy A kind of class.
His class is hard but fair. There is lots of work and to get a good grade you need to do it.
Outdated Davis Oldham is an oddball teacher. I believe his ways in his work are disgraceful! Sad!
He grades people tough af. There were a lot of work in this class. His lectures were dry too. Just straight up don't take him.
Davis' ENG102H class is very challenging, and also very rewarding. He likes to have a piece of homework every school night, so be prepared to devote at least an hour every day outside of class to that. He also has comment/question cards in his class every day so you can submit questions (or art) anonymously, which is very nice.
Helpful and attentive, if you show up to class, talk to him during his office hours, and put your best effort in you will get an A.
Get ready to read. Too much HOMEWORK. Tough grader too. The time you spend in the class does not equal the grade you get. You can get better grades in other profs class with the same amount of effort. Just not worth it.
Davis Oldham is going to be a friend for those who are diligently working , so if you just want to do nothing, don't take him because he's fair. He's a professional and will teach you what he knows. He's the best teacher I've ever had!
Davis is an incredible teacher. I've got him for Eng101 and he really tailors his class to his students. He is the kind of teacher I've always wanted. I'm so lucky that I just got in his class.
I had Davis for English 101, Late and filled I went to advisory and said I need to take this class, they warned me he would be a hard teacher but I was up for the challenge in a subject I was confident with, Davis was everything I could ask in a teacher, considerate, caring, and educating with a purpose. I highly recommend taking Davis to GROW.
Super caring guy. He grades very clear and allows extra credit. All the assignments throughout the class led up to the end assignment, which is GREAT. The final assignment is a 7-10 page essay but worth the awesome professor!
Covid/Online: He is very nice, and seemed to really care about students despite covid making things difficult. There were a lot of assignments, and I took this over the summer but did not find his class hard. Would take again if I needed an English credit. If you're shy he does make you do zoom meetings with him, but I didn't mind.
Davis gives great feedback and lots of extra credit. He seems to really care about his students. This class is an easy A if you keep with it. There was a lot of assignments but basically all of them were quick and simple. I'd definitely recommend.
He has really high standards. Workload super heavy so be prepared. There are quite a few extra credit assignments but that's a lot of extra work.
Professor Oldham wants you to be successful in English class! He offers really helpful, individualized feedback. I felt like his classes were thoughtfully designed. It is a lot of work. tbh I sunk a lot of time into this class. I'm sure there are other 101 classes that would be an easier A, but this class made me do good work to achieve my grade.
I took this class in hybrid model, and please if you can, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS he is so vague about instructions and then marks you down when you don't follow "what he was looking for". I will say he is quite progressive and kind, and is often game for a discussion, but don't think that means he will change much. ASK TOO MANY QUESTIONS! Trust me
Davis is a really good teacher. He is very flexible with late assignments and actually cares about his students. I really liked his teaching style. 10/10 recommend taking his classes!
If you take 102H you’re going to be working on one paper through out the class with assignments to help you learn and add to that paper. It’s a pretty easy class and he’s not strict on deadlines. Some week there will be many (4-6) assignments, some you’ll just have like two. If you do get behind, be sure to contact him. Great class.
Davis is an excellent teacher. He's head of the English Department and still teaches the basic English 101. He helped me be able to write with more ease than any other teacher I've had in my life. I have always struggled with writing papers and he helped me get over my internal critic. As a class we agreed on a grading rubric.
You can tell Davis is very passionate about writing and truly enjoys helping his students succeed. He is great to learn from and get to know.
Professor Davis is really kind. However, the workload for this class was a lot. If you do the discussions and follow the instructions you will get a full grade for it. You write a total of 3 essays, all the essays I will say are easy if you follow the prompt. There isn't a late work policy, which is nice. But if you suck at writing take this class.
Mr Oldham was amazing, he is very dedicated about teaching. He was also very helpful if you ask for feedback on your essay. Provides lots of extra credit. He was a lenient grader
This man is insidious. Vague directions/prompts for EVERYTHING. Does not do his job at all. This class would be easy, if not for his misdirection. Assigns work later than agreed upon. Peer reviews are required to be on a public discussion board. I have questioned several other Shoreline professors on this, and all said that it is unnecessary.
Do not take this class. I cannot warn you enough, I have never seen a professor give such vague instructions yet be so harsh. Assigns a "Creative Essay" and says as long as it contains these creative elements than you will get full credit. But he forgets to alert you that he has a very strict idea of what he personally counts as "creative".
Mr Davis is very helpful and understandi
Mr Davis is very nice and understanding. He is easy to talk to and always willing to help. His class put more emphasis on effort, so if you are the type who participates and put lots of effort, you will get good grades.
He is very very weird to students when it comes to submitting papers and even in discussion. Felt that he was a bit partial. will never take a class again like this , too much load and also very tough grader.
He grades some stuff(discussions, peer reviews) last minute. Although we could redo the work to get full credit, you can't really do that if you know your grade last minute. But if you read the instructions carefully and answer all questions then you should be fine. The assigned readings are interesting. He gives good essay feedback.
He is very nice, and wants to creatively teach you as many things as he can. If you put your effort on your work, getting B will be even harder than getting A+. Think about why people who are complaining about him have low grades. Right?
Professor Davis is really knowledgable and personable. I took both of his classes for English 101 & 102H, and I found him to be understanding, persuasive and inspiring! Both contain essential and important knowledge for academia.
Grading was though at the end
get ready for the homework and assignments.
Davis is very experienced and he's a great guy outside of class. There are regular reading quizzes and journaling but it's chill. He's very accommodating to student's needs and accessible via email usually within a day at most. He does assign quite a bit of reading, which is time consuming, but he goes over them in class. Just take his class.
Davis was a great teacher and very accommodating for someone who is disabled. Most assignments were easy grading. He had no late penalties in his class and with the amount of work I had to do this saved my grade. My class did a research paper with 6 stages it was a lot of work but still doable.
Since this is a required class for many people, I feel like he grades a harshly and doesn't really try to help students but instead just makes them figure it out themselves. He also talks a lot and assigns lots of work. For me, there were 9 papers we had to do but 6 of them were revisions, and we had to do heavy revisions. Also instructions r vague
