takes a critical view of law. encourages students to think critically. engaging and relevant lectures.
I guess she's alright. I don't really like the format of her lectures but the material is relevant. Exam was a little tricky, but fair overall.
Not always clear. Don't like her lecturing style, she's not great. Wouldn't take another of her classes
Tries too hard to incorporate issues she feels strongly about into the class. She must remember this is an introductory law class, and not a ****, feminist rights class.
the hottest prof I ever had. yummy!
She is a great teacher, she explains everything with clarity and makes the readings actually make sense. The exam was a little difficult, but overall I have learned a lot and really enjoy the class
awesome prof! encourages her students to think and speak freely, while listening to everyone. One of the best profs I've had @ Carleton!!
prof moore is awesome! she opened my mind and my eyes, taught me about so many injustices i never reAlized occurred. altho the class was at 8 30, i wouldnt have missed it for anything
the course is very abstract and pointless, it was basically law OAC course.very sketchy TAs and essay topics.nothing against****ppl but the homosexual rights topic was way too exaustive and too escalated.
Too much focus on gay and feminist rights. I felt that she could have incorporated her personal interests in without neglecting the other topics.
Way to much focus on certain issues which reflected nagatively on the class. Lecture style was decent but tended to be very dry. Essays were easy and Exam was fairly easy also. Very mediocre at best.
I don't know who posted that this prof opened their eyes, i found just the opposite. the whole point of the course was to teach everyone to think in her little critical legal box. if you weren't poor, female, or a GLBT, you weren't worth talking about. ps, as an aside she taught some law
You couldn't pay me to take another course from this prof!
If you are on scholarship and you want to lose it, then take a course from her. She thinks a "C" is a great mark.
to much focus on gay and lesbians.
she raises relevant issues and encourages everyone to think critically.
shes great. really easy to approach and loves what shes talking about. really easy and interesting course
They should rename this class GAYS1000, no offence but I thought I signed up for law. She is a good prof, speaks with enthusiasm and is entertaining... but she turned this class into her outlet for the forwarding of her cause... there are other legal issues other than gay&lesbian rights!!!
worst proff ever... she reads EVERYTHING from her sheets (if I wanted it to be read to me, I would photocopy her notes and read it my damn self!)... she foceses WAYYYYYYYY to much on Homosexuality... it's not woman's issues, relax!
I disagree with the people who hate this class. She is a great prof, easy to understand, gives advice on the assignments and is always available for her students. I have not had another prof who have set aside a whole class to talk about the assignment. She didnt even had to do that.
Prof Moore is the reason that hot chillies were created in this silly website. Damn she's hot! Meow.
She has passion about what she teaches and extensive knowledge, which makes the class interesting and easier to understand/follow

Assignments are excruciatingly hard and painful and boring. Her lectures are boring and we get the point: MINORITY GROUPS NEED HELP. She says this about 50 million gazillion times - we get it. Most importantly, if you want to pass law or even do well, go with someone else: my only advice
JOKE CLASS..assignments are easy...never showed up to class and got a B...JUST PAY SOMEONE FOR THEIR NOTES!!!..there is nothing to be learned in first year courses cause they jump all over the place and the info leaves your head the instant you leave the class. the years after is when it becomes interesting.
left the class knowing not much more about the canadian legal system when i went in. her lectures are extremely boring and she focusses way too much on gay rights in comparison to other issues.
AMAZING PROF! Her lectures were very interesting. This class is nothing like a first year law class, it's more about law and society. Therefore LESS BORING! This class is very easy but if you go to the lectures it can also be very interesting!
Prof. Moore is a good teacher but it's Blanca my T.A. for LAWS1000 that I have a problem with. She gave me a D on my first paper and didn't include any comments whatsoever to offer guidance on where I went wrong. At least she didn't give me an F and neglect to do that, like she did to at least 5 other students I spoke to. WTF is up with that?!
Assignments are interesting. Class is an intro class so don't expect to learn much, but if you go to class it is really interesting. She brings in guest speakers and teachs with movies on various different cases that you will see later in law if you continue. Great intro to it all.
she was a nice teacher but i found that she wasn't very helpful and her tests a little hard.
I dono what u ppl are talking about. Professor Moore is awesome! She's the most interesting Prof I have and her lectures are always great. She's even made me consider being a professor myself. I got an A- in the class but I'm also a genious!!! :)
Umm... your pillow will need a pillow. Zzzzzzzz.
She was by far one of my favourite profs this year. She made the transition from high school to university so easy to deal with. Her lectures are always interesting and I actually feel as if I have learned something coming out of her class.
Great prof. Great class
Great proff. Definitly got my moneys worth! Exactly what you should expect from a third year course, definitly not a bird course. If you put the effort and thought into the assignments and not just random crap that you wriote last minute, your grade should be atleast half decent.
very thorough and helpful.
She is a pretty good prof. Her lectures were well organized and outlined, and the assignments were pretty straight forward. TA groups are useless, but that is not her fault...Her exams are pretty easy (she basically TELLS you what exactly to study). The only thing is that I found her readings/case selections kind of biased (homosexual/women rights)
She was my best prof first year. The way she was able to connect actual cases to basic concepts really helped me to understand. The exam was so easy and she went through the entire exam with us explaining everything we would have to know to get a good grade. Great class!
final exam worth 30% was 60 multiple choice... very straight forward and easy... not that interested in law.. but easy with her teaching
Not at all willing to help. Material not very clear
This prof is great. I had her two years ago in first year, and I keep looking to have her again. She shows great movies and keeps you interested. I had her at 8:30 on wed, and when I didn't make to most of my afternoon classes because I was sleeping, I never missed one of hers. She keeps everything interesting!
Great prof, uses important issues to draw understanding among the class concepts
Ew- this prof is terrible. Even I didn't think it was possible to be as bad as she is- she lectures on and on about minority groups- for the entire semester. She is not clear about anything- and her assignment criteria is very general but then she marks hard like a b****. TAKE IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE UNLESS YOU WANT TO FAIL.
GREAT! I have never seen any class like this.
Relates well with the students.
alright...i stongly suggest getting into one of her classes if you can. she clearly breaks down the information that you need to know and how about going to get that information. She is a wicked teacher. her classes are important to go to because the stuff she discusses is from the textbook but she puts in into simpler terms. She deserves a raise!
Great class. Lectures are interesting and relevent. Tried not to miss any. She always tries to engage the class in the lectures. Very approachable and funny. Assignments are pretty easy.
I was very disappointed in this calss. The T.A's she chose were horrible and she is not very good at mediation for a practicing lawyer.
Awesome prof! Had a lot of helpful insight for us. Although the course was a refresher for anyone who took high school law, she managed to make it interesting. And for the record, she does not choose her TA's, they are assigned to her by the department.
Professor Moore is a wonderful professor. Her obvious passion for her discipline, wry sense of humour, and willingness to engage the class in discussion make her course one of the most enjoyable you'll ever take. Throw in her sinfully easy exams, cakewalk assignments, and eye-opening lectures... highly, highly recommended.
Professor Moore is refreshing, lively and motivating. She is a gem in the sense that she goes outside of the bubble of simply reading from some book. She challenges the mind and truly provides one with a learning experience with a touch of fun. Would love to take her classes again!
She seems kind of stuck up to me and she is really outspoken. Her views on law are like a typical left wing feminist- abortions are fantastic, euthanisia is amazing and all that jazz. So if your anti abortion or right leaning you will probably get annoyed after the first month. Questions you on really trivial stuff. Made me disinterested in Law.
Very engaging and great at getting discussions started even in a massive class. Leaves assignments broad so you can do what you want with them. REALLY prepares you for the exams.
Really awesome first year prof! Easy to understand, and has very helpful TA's. It was one of the only law classes in first year that I didn't sleep through in the mornings! Great exam prep for the first exam, but the final was a little more than I expected (although multiple choice)...no real need to keep up with all the readings
she's fair and interesting and smart.
shes really good
Fairly easy class, you can get a good mark just by watching the lectures and following her exam review. Textbooks are not required. As stated before, her far-left, anti-capitalist political stances are EXTREMELY annoying... to a certain audience.
Very easy class.... Go to class listen. Make sure you study EVERYTHING that she says on her exam review!!!!! You will do well!!! DON'T BUY TEXTBOOKS!!!! She talks about readings in class.... so just pay attention and take notes!!!!! PASS Class is offered too... and it really helps expecially if you like to miss class!!!! :)
At first, I really enjoyed this class. Then the exam happened. She says it is very easy, and straightforward, but it's not. The essay questions were ridiculous and vague, and the T.A. was not helpful at all. By the end of the year, I was definitely ready to finish. If you are really interested in law, take it, if not, stay AWAY.
Very one dimensional and Pro-feminist stance in her lectures.Cases studied or given as examples were mostly about women having suffered some form of domestic violence. If you're gay, lesbian or female, you might find her encouraging and aspiring but for the men, spare yourself from attending these male-bashing lectures and don't take this class!
Very smart, reletively animated. Coupled with the tutorials, she provides a good introduction to university and the discipline.
The lectures are sometimes a bit tedious, especially the ones at the beginning of the year, but she's really interesting to listen to and pretty knowledgeable. She assigned a lot of readings compared to my other first year courses, but most were relevant. Her exam review is so helpful, though. You literally just have to fill in the blanks.
Assignments were okay but her final was brutal! Her review was useless.
Really knows her stuff and gives you everything you need to know in lectures. Her exam reviews are amazing if you take the time to use them and she gives so much relevant info that the texts are really just for background reading and are not even really needed. By far my favourite first year course. And she's fun too :)
I kind of laugh when people give Dawn a bad rating for focusing on gays, women, and aboriginals. These are perhaps the MOST relevant issues in canadian law TODAY. If you don't like a relevant, insightful class then don't take this one. Dawn knows what she's talking about, very intelligent prof. The exam was a bit harder than i expected though.
Very interesting, knowledgable, and easy to understand. Her "no-fail" exam reviews were absolutely fantastic, and the assignments helped get me into the material. Her guest lecturers were also well worth listening to.
Very interesting and her exam reviews were the exam!
Very left wing professor as a warning. I loved her first year class it was the reason I majored in law. She's very interesting, easy to talk to, picks good guest lecturers for her class.
Very excited to take the course, and dropped it within the second week. It's slow, slightly boring, and does nothing to expand on idea's already established in first-third year. You find yourself stuck in a class that doesn't do much to expand your thoughts. I read most of the material she assigned already so, it wasn't challenging to me.
The topic and material are very interesting, however the Prof forgot to schedule classes, missed many classes, and is yet to respond to emails from her students. The assignments were reasonable, but her expectations are not very well explained and she marks rather tough. Expectations are too high for a summer final exam!!!
Don't expect to understand how to do any of her assignments. She doesn't take the time to write feedback comments, so you will have no clue on how to improve. Also expect no review about the exam, or her to show up, or to even schedule classes properly. If you can take this class with someone, then do so.
By far one of the worst profs I've ever had in my three years of university. Does not clearly define her expectations, refuses to communicate with anyone if they have questions or concerns and provides absolutely no feedback on any assignments.
Horrible Proff! Do NOT take class. She is not clear, has high expectations, does not provide feedback. I was very excited to take this class, she made me change my mind. If you have the opportunity to take it with a different professor, don't hesitate
Taking her class last summer was the worse decision of my academic career. She's a horrible professor who doesn't give a crap about you.She won't provide any useable feedback, and criticize your paper if you go against her beliefs. She'll also forget to submit marks, so you'll think you've failed. Awful, avoid at all costs.
Do not take this course with this professor. She is an extremely tough marker on 3 journals which she never clarifies how to do. She took ages to reply to my emails and it's only when i complained many times that she got back to me and even then she was extremely rude and unhelpful. There aren't many assignments for this course but not worth taking
If you want a law class, do not take this one, this is a sociology class. It was interesting yet the journal instructions were vague. Leaves most of the marking to the TA (who was degrading and rude). Overall I enjoyed the class.
My mid term paper received a low mark. I then worked hard on my final paper and I end up with an A for that paper and it is one of my best undergraduate papers with an enlighten and strong conclusion and I can continue to talk knowledgeably on the topic. She also advised me wisely where to take my career for the best salary. I am still in touch.
This class was very interesting and Professor Moore has a lot of experience and interesting history in the field. She assigned "journals" which are roughly 20 pages on the readings each week, very long and takes up a lot of time but easily graded. She brought in interesting guest lecturers and classes never surpassed 2 hours.
I was really excited to take this class with this prof because she seems super interesting and knowledgeable. That may be so, however she is entirely unwilling to clarify her unusual journal assignment style if you have questions. Expect to be met with angry emails and accusations if you don't understand something. Course dropped.
Great class.
I was super excited because Dawn comes from an extensive background and was extremely disappointed. This isn't a law class, this is a history/philosophy class. She had 3 journals and a take-home. The TA was not consistent with feedback. It was also very difficult to reach them both. They are both extremely hard markers.
She has 3 journals which she is very vague on instructions for and then marks them extremely hard. I did better on papers for fourth year classes that were much harder than these were. She is not very helpful and her feedback does not help you to do better as the semester goes on. I highly recommend taking this with a another prof if one is avail
Before taking the class I was really excited. But the journals are awful- vague instructions, no rubric. I'm an A- overall average student and I did poorly on them. She doesn't give good feedback and the TA was bad too. Don't bother sending an email, she won't email you back. If you want a good overall average, don't take this course with Dawn.
Dawn is incredibly passionate and well educated about her field of punishment in Canada, but she tends to stretch her lectures for 3 hours when they are only 8 slides. Also the journals are vague and non-descript as well as the poor feedback that doesn't really help.
Dawn is a very passionate and inspiring professor. She knows her material and topics. Very intelligent and caring. However, a very hard marker. You need to follow exactly her requirements for the assignment, no BS. Pray that you get the TA as a marker. Other than that, she's very open.
Dawn's awesome. She knows what she's talking about & backs up her claims. I will say she is an extremely tough grader, I 'm typically an A/A+ student & Dawn's class lowered my average a lot which is unfortunate because I loved the class & felt like my work was strong. I usually got 75-80% on assignments & the feedback was always unexpected/specific
Take a class with her, any class with her, you will not be disappointed. She is absolutely amazing, smart, brings different perspectives. Very critical and analytical. She embodies what university should be about. If you are in crim/law or soc and/or humr I would greatly recommend her classes. You will leave class every day with renewed passion!
As a professor she's very passionate. Thats the one good thing I have to say. I am in my 4th yr of Crim and this is by far the WORST class I have ever taken at Uni. Instructions for assignments are so vague. 2 pages? Each one took me 5+ HOURS. Its easier to write a 12 page essay. Little feedback. I am an A- average student and got a C+. AVOID IT!
Professor Moore's class Punishment and the Law was great! Learned more about the prison system than I expected. Professor Moore was super understanding during covid and was flexible with due dates. The course was lecture heavy and the slides don't give much detail so attending the lectures is a MUST to pass. Assignments (3 journals) aren't bad.
This class is not easy but you learn so much and by the end, you might even change your view on the prison system. She doesnt record lectures and its all in real time on zoom. Its a lot of reading and writing but the content is very interesting. She brings up really good points in every class and its worth taking
The lectures weren't too bad, and the weekly readings matched the lecture material perfectly. The journal assignments were pretty vague, but once you get the hang of them they're relatively easy. Prof Moore is very passionate about her work and it shows in the lectures. Overall her class was great and would recommend people to take it!
Professor Moore is passionate about law and a good lecturer but expects too much of students. She had us write a 2 page report every week on the readings and wasn't clear on what she expected. She grades tough and because you don't know what she expects its hard to get a good grade. You also won't do well if you don't do every reading meticulously.
Never have I ever met a more snarky professor in my life. Her lectures and journals are fine, but god forbid you ever have to ask her a question. She'll shoot you down with no mercy. You'll pass if you do the work and show up for the lectures, but don't expect her to give you any assistance.
Not sure why there are so many negative reviews, perhaps it is because they are at the undergraduate level. At the MA level, Dr. Moore is one of the most engaging and intelligent professors I have ever had. I highly recommend this course to anyone who can take it. Be prepared to voice your opinions!
She ignored me when I asked for an extension (with a doctors note) and she has been very rude in emails on multiple occasions. Didn’t show up to class a couple times or cancelled right at the last minute but gets mad if you miss a class. Wouldn’t take again.
The professor interrupted the class with 3 outside lectures. They were interesting but took up valuable class time and we weren't able to finish the class material before the end of the course. For the final exam, she gave it to us and then refused to answer any emails about it.
Avoid taking a class with this professor. Doesn't provide clear instructions for assignments/projects and then becomes annoyed and outwardly rude when students go to her to ask questions about assignments or are confused about the content. Didn't finish the course material by the end of the semester due to an abundance of guest lectures.
Dawn Moore is a phenomenal professor and, in my opinion, any hate she's getting is purely defamation of character because she was super clear about her expectations with us from the jump. Most people from the fall term did really well; these negative reviews were written by a few salty students who couldn't appreciate Dawn's style of teaching tbh.
She NEVER responded to emails. Kept moving in person classes online. Didn't show up to class without notice, so we all showed up. Then she lied and said she told us this over email. 60% of grade was group work and she said that she would not be answering any concerns about issues within the group. so if your teammate did nothing you were in trouble
Even though she had very good lectures, is extremely rude responding to emails and will often get annoyed when you ask a question/ask for help. Her class was in person but many times she moved the class online at the last minute, and one time she didn't even show up. For the final exam, she released it late and refused to answer any questions on it
Very knowledgeable, passionate and an amazing lecturer. However, four of these became online guest lectures (who weren't always relevant), where students were constantly kicked out even after messaging her. This caused us to miss the majority of the planned course content. Did not answer a single email all semester, even after reminders in class.
I went into the course thinking it was going to be in person, but we were moved online and missed majority of course content. In the zoom calls for class, you are kicked out if you do not have your camera on, and can't join if you are more than 10 mins late. She also never responded to my emails, and was very rude in class at times.
I like Dawn a lot but I think her class in Fall 2023 semester fell short because she's involved in a project outside of Carleton that requires a lot of her time and energy. Amazing prof, interesting lectures but extremely inaccessible outside of class, doesn't answer emails + moved her in-person classes online, which took away from the experience
Horrible getting back to students, thinks shes better than her students. If u want help or advice for any work don't waste your time she won't answer, and if she does answer, she gets annoyed. Canceled the first month of class and then moved a class online with little to no communication about work throughout the entire semester. avoid if possible
This class was supposed to be in person, however, the entire first month was canceled and the rest was online. This prof is rude to students and just doesn't want to be there, sending a mass email insulting the student who wanted her not cancel the last class. If someone made a case against tenure this class would be there first piece of evidence.
Professor Moore is knowledgeable, but communication can be inconsistent. Attend lectures, complete readings thoroughly, and utilize resources like unstuck AI to succeed. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding course.
